Today's prompt was "favorite Newt platonic relationship"

If I settle on what we see on screen, I would say Jacob (well, I could almost say Tina too, but that makes me sad), but I already talked a lot about their friendship. But I really love how it evolved in the course of the 3 movies.

Then, to be honest, I love almost all relationships that are portrayed, or, at least, how I build them up in my head. I have so many HC...

With Theseus : I really like how their relationship evolved since the beginning of CoG, from a bit overprotective Theseus, to a Newt who actually is the one to save his brother. I love how Newt is little by little closer to his brother. It's sad that the bound have probably been helped by Leta's death.

With Queenie : I really think there is a huge potential. Because he has difficulties to share with others, because she can "hear" him, at least a part, because they share values, and weaknesses (and Tina).

With Leta : I'm really sad they wasted Leta's character (like they did with almost... hum, all... women...). They had so much potential as friends, then as family. Their dynamic was complicated, but, I believe, interesting. And they helped each other to go through teenage years... I would have liked to see more of that too.

With Bunty : well I know a lot don't like her, like she's annoying, or even a stalker. I believe she brings a lot to him. Because she (if we use ITW as referenecs) makes him understand that he can't do all by himself, he needs help for his creatures. She helps him to learn how to cooperate with something else, despite how difficult it his, and in particular for something he knows so well (beasts). Yes, she has a crush on him, yes he's oblivious, and yes I don't think this part of the plot was necessary (but I don't mind, it was, maybe just for the "insignificant person" thing and, then, SOD plot, but... meh...). But the character is nice and important for Newt's development. I believe at least.

With Lally well, we don't have many information but I love how they seem fan about their respective works, and how he's comfortable with her, despite the fact they didn't met before, probably because they exchanged letters. And because they share some knowledge.

What do you mean it’s ONLY Wednesday?!
So where do I start? This is the first WIP Wednesday post of 2023, how is the year treating you all so far? I’m back at work, the students are as challenging as always. I’ve been crocheting again, and it’s helping to keep things pretty chill. 
One thing I need to do is figure out a schedule for writing. I have a crazy number of WIPs (see below), and I need to wrangle those - a bit like herding cats though, when the muse keeps popping out ‘babies.’

Okay, so here's my question: What is Fletcher's opinion on other whumpers that keep people as pets? Like, full on pets? Are they like, "whatever. Their business" or are they like, "wtf that's f'ed up." - The-Raccoon-that-is-obsessed-with-Fletcher

A little bit of both but mostly they would think it was f’d up. Obviously they’re not above keeping people captive, but I think forcing someone to act like a dog or cat or what have you would be too much for them.  
They have to do business with crime families and such so I’m just imagining them - and this series is not set in the boxboy universe or anything but for all intents and purposes - at some boss’s house who has a “pet” like that and if they saw a grown human being wearing a collar and idk acting like/being treated like a literal pet, Fletcher would just be like “Well anyway it’s been a lovely evening but I have a long drive back to the woods and I really must be going.” and just essentially pull a shove-breadsticks-in-your-purse-and-run. Like they’re not gonna tell off a mob boss or whomstever but they’ll just be like yeah no thanks.
I did briefly think of a sort of au idea where Fletcher keeps Buck when they find him in the woods as a personal project/experiment to train someone basically from scratch. So in that au they were kind of training him to be a guard dog because their thought process was to like break him down until he relied on Fletcher and took orders unquestioningly, like a dog would. Basically get him to a “don’t bite the hand that feeds” mentality, and then start the combat training once they know it won’t be used against them. But I don’t really have interest in writing a pet story, so I didn’t lol. It was really only a brief scene I had in mind anyway.

Miami, Of All Places
Tagging → Quinn Fabray [with mentions of Noah Puckerman] Time Frame → June 2013.  Location →  A Certain Airport, FL General Notes → [prompt]
She couldn’t recall the exact time, but it was well past  ‘why the fuck am I still awake’ but too soon for ‘why the fuck am I up so early’. The yawn that threatened to unhinge her jaw told her coffee was going to be essential, and soonish, if she needed to stay alert enough to actually board the flight that’d been delayed twice already, thanks to a freak storm that damn near rattled the glass windows at Miami International. 
It would be her luck, getting stuck in an airport, in Miami of all places while a goddamn summer storm threatened to ground every flight out for the next six hours, when of course, she needed to be back in Los Angeles for a crucial meeting between an up-and-coming artist that Jami had entrusted to her, to handle and sign for the company. She’d been sweet-talking the musician for weeks, dinners and attending shows, dangling a choice contract in front of the starving creative who, despite the hunger for fame was also a greedy little shit who decided a hold-out was better than giving in, determined to see exactly what else he could squeeze out of Levi Music Management. 
It annoyed Quinn, being at the beck and call of an admittedly talented but also admitted jackass of a human being, but it was the business and she was still a grunt. A lowly talent scout still trying to make her mark and please her boss. Even if that meant taking her chances on an epic rainstorm at ass early o’clock in the morning. 
Her butt had grown numb from chilling on the floor in the airport, tablet perched in her lap while she scrolled weather updates in between not watching whatever Netflix was playing. It was making her anxious, the not-knowing. She didn’t much mind red eye flights when she was actually prepared but she should have been back in LA hours ago for a show that, judging from the time on her phone was most likely on its last legs, and she’d have to explain to Jami why she wasn’t there finally convince this talented jackass to sign with the agency. 
Quinn took comfort in the fact that everyone else in the seating area looked just as over it as she felt, most sprawled out over chairs or curled up against bags, waiting for the announcement that would send them scrambling for the gate. It was only after stifling another jawbreaker of a yawn did she decide getting up was necessary, needing the jolt that would only come from moving around. 
And a really large coffee. 
She was thankful for the Givenchy travel bag that served as her suitcase, gripping the soft leather handles and tugging it on her shoulder. Far easier than lugging around something with wheels, especially through the airport. It felt like a ghost town, the usual hustle and bustle one would find at any given time during the day had slowed considerably, allowing for the hollow echo of her ankle boots clicking sharply against the tiled floor to seem even louder in the relative hum of silence. 
There was something eerily pleasant about airports in the wee hours that Quinn could appreciate. The seemingly endless rush of activity in the daytime eventually crawled to a more manageable pace. People were even cheerier, or at least too tired, too dazed to be dickish. The barista at Starbucks flashed her a well meaning smile when Quinn fought another yawn, but managed a raspy thanks once her cup was nestled in her hand. The fragrant Pike Place roast was already working its magic, robust enough for a smooth burst of energy, with the extra shots of caramel and vanilla satisfying her late night sweets craving. It would be enough to tide her over until landing in L.A. 
Hopefully. 
Coffee in hand, Quinn wandered back to the gate, this time settling in an empty chair a little ways away from the other would be passengers. Bag in her lap, she fished out her phone from her jacket pocket. There wasn't a need to check her messages, given the time, but it didn't stop her from scrolling through her inbox or the typical social medias. Anything to keep the travel anxiety from having time to settle in. The unknown of whether or not she’d be able to make it back home bothered her, especially with the possibility of losing a potential client on the line.
A small sip of her coffee soothed her a bit, but didn't stop her thumb’s relentless beat on the side of her slim smartphone and before her brain even realized what was happening and could put a stop to it, her fingers had seized the moment and scrolled through her contacts, hitting call on number she hadn't dialed in a minute. 
Her reasons for that were few but solid ones. Their schedules had long been out of sync, thanks to work and a different zones. And though these very things were the cause of end, their recent interactions weren't as strained as they were before the breakup. No ugly cloud of obligation or guilt behind that feeling looming over her head. 
And while he was no longer her boyfriend, she could still remember how much she loved having him as a friend.
Calling him late at night was a gamble. It occurred to her he was most likely sleeping, and maybe not alone. She resisted the urge to frown at that, instead taking another slow pull from her coffee, hazel eyes darting around as the phone continued to ring. She knew there was a small chance he was awake, probably caught up watching some cheesy action flick or thought-provoking documentary he would no doubt ramble on about because he always had so many thoughts on so many things and Quinn realized that it was one of his many quirks she really appreciated. 
The way he could turn anything into an epic Odyssey-like tale, making the most out of the mundane well a sharp quip, hard glare, or a loud grumble. She missed that. It was certainly handy for those late nights when she couldn’t sleep, too wired from a night out, or just missing him. And Quinn had another realization, the routine of calling him up when it was late, the habit of it all, the comfort it brought. 
Lost in thought, she was only jarred from the jaunt down memory lane at the sound of a voice that didn’t belong to Puck. It was not the greeting she was expecting, nor the tone, formal and generic while urging the caller to leave a voice message. She’d already prepared herself for his ‘hey’, slightly raspy from sleep, or tinged with distraction thanks to whatever had caught his attention on screen. Hell, she would have settled for disinterested, anything better than the sterility of the automated service. 
With a small sigh, Quinn ended the call, sinking a bit lower in the seat and soothing the ball of nerves that settled heavily in her stomach with a gulp of her still-warm coffee. She sent him a quick text, apologizing for the ‘accidental dial’ and wished him a good night, hoping that would be enough to excuse the lapse in judgment.
Stuck in that airport, in Miami of all places with the next five or six hours filled with uncertainties, maybe she was wishing for the comfort of something familiar. The voice of someone she still knew so well, who could distract her from the miserable weather and too-quiet conditions. It’d been a long shot, but now she was stuck with a book she’d been trying to read for two weeks now, or the demos she should have listened to, three days ago. 
Neither was all that appealing, far too much brain power that seemed impossible for the hour. So she settled for shutting her eyes, her grip still tight on her bag as her mind drifted, not too far though, because she still managed to feel the buzz of the phone not ten minutes later, lips eventually twitching with the faintest of smiles at the message that appeared.

So it wasn’t his voice, but it was enough to calm her considerably, arguably better than the coffee and Quinn shifted back into a comfortable position in the chair as her eyes drifted shut once more, mellow but still alert enough to make moves once her flight began to board. Which would hopefully be soon. She wasn’t worried though. 
Even if it was in Miami, of all places.

As soon as she stops looking at me, I’m putting this shit down. She won’t stop looking. I can’t tell if she’s blinking or not. This is irritating. Since when does my sister think she needs to watch me? Her. Sara. Watching me. Sara, who walks into doorjambs daily and trips up stairs, watching me like I’m the risk.
I think she thinks I’m going to be like Mom and I keep telling her I’m not. Besides, Mom’s in a good place now. She actually calls me, checks to see what I’m up to and she has all these happy ass stories about her and fuckass Steven, but she’s in a good place. There’s no reason for Sara to be looking at either of us like this. I need to know if she sends Mom these exercises to do, too. I’ll call her later.

I should probably being writing down a grocery list or something. Some shit to pick up after work but I already know I don’t fucking feel like it and last time I was in that bodega I got lumped in with the gentrifiers. Dude. I’m probably gentrifying. Need to stop that. I’ll shop later, it’s not like me and Sara eat much. Plus she has artsy people to feed her and keep her watered. She’s fine.
I should probably make a game plan for the year or something instead of just waiting for this tax return to drop. Maybe the same plan as last year - part time job is for savings, the full times are for bills and Sara, don’t fuck the same people twice, drink more Ovaltine, make sure Gabe doesn’t fuck his boss, convince Sara to get off suicide watch, don’t forget to let Minnie out to pee, get everyone to leave me the fuck alone for once. Between Sara, Teita, Gabe and Solo always in my face about something, I can barely take a shit, let alone even think about all their little helpful “suggestions”. I’m fine.
I’m just fucking tired.
So who even has the time to consider that? I’m sick of going home to see my sister and my grandmother looking at me the same way they look at my mother. Like, I fucking caught Sara staring at Mom’s wrists and then glancing at me like I couldn’t see her. Why the fuck would I do that? I’m just tired. Who even has the energy for that? Especially when everyone left behind would crumble? Jesus, she needs to stop fucking looking at me.

It's amazing being able to walk around a empty theatre and try to imagine whether it's the right kind of space needed to put on a production, awe inspiring to imagine the shows which took root on the stages.  and bizarre to think that a Berry/Wales production might be set upon one of them. Jamie has been enjoying this part of the process more than I have because it's completely new to her. She's never stood upon a Broadway stage before, well Off-Broadway, but still equally as important. Being here feels a little like coming home, it's where I took my first steps as an actress, where directors took a chance on an unknown, still green... still at college young lady who could be a success or a failure.. It's hard to believe that we've come so far and are looking for a place to call home for Burlesque.
The past few months have flown by like a whirlwind, throwing my life out of routine and into some kind of organised chaos. My days and nights were filled with everything Burlesque, and between lyric and book writing, finding people willing to help promote what we had to possible producers, to setting up workshops and mini performances, to negotiation with people who were interested in producing the show.. I’m not sure how I kept my head above water. There is no way a person can be prepared for the amount of work and ass kissing you have to do when you want to write and perform something new on the stage, especially when you're not known as a writer. None of it has been easy, far from it, but if there is one thing I've learned from being rejected for parts in the past, you have to dust yourself up and keep pounding the pavement because someone out there will believe in you enough to say yes. There is nothing in this world that would make me redo these past few months, I would relive every headache, every aching muscle, make all those phone calls and go to all those interviews again and again because I know that all this hard work is worth it, no  matter what happens. If Burlesque isn't a hit, I can still hold my head high because I feel like I've achieved so much and done things I would never have dreamed of doing.
Concerts were always a lovely break from everything else, music has the ability to chase everything away and for one moment everything is right with the world, even though it's not. There's no denying how much fun performing at 54 Below makes me miss the old days of performing with Dylan and Toby back in Marion. Maybe I'll have to persuade the boys to get the band back together... for one night only... Now all I can think about is The Blues Brothers. Another movie to add to the growing list of things I need to see or re-watch. It doesn’t help that Hugo added a few of his own, apparently I need to watch the original Karate Kid films, The Matrix and Point Break.
Hugo...I met Hugo at Hannah's birthday party back in September, he was picking his niece up as a favour to his sister, we talked a little but when you have to entertain a room of seven to eight years olds you don't get that much time to talk. It wasn't until a concert at Hannah's school in December that I actually got the chance to talk to him. We arranged to meet up with Hannah and Kissi, took them ice skating and have met up every other Sunday since so the girls could hang out. I'm going into this with my eyes wide open, we're both busy people and we like the others company, but we're not looking for it to be more than it is right now. Once we start auditions and work shops, the free time I have will lesson, and there is a chance that Hugo might be moving states in a few months because of work. The possibility of him moving makes me sad but the idea of it doesn't cripple me any more.  Had this been a few years ago I wouldn't have coped with the idea of letting someone into my life, knowing they were going to leave. Finally, I've grown up.
There have been so many things to celebrate over the past few months, none of them hit me as much as Hannah's birthday. I can't believe she turned 8 last year, it's hard not to look at her and still see the three year old who used to sing Disney songs at the top of her voice and owned more princess dresses than Disney World. All her costumes have been replaced by others, Princess for Superhero's and sparkly shoes for tap and ballet slippers. For her birthday I took her to see Matilda and now she's decided that she wants to act on the stage like her big sister and dad, like her mother once did. She has no idea what that actually means but as with a lot of children she’s set her mind on it and is very determined. Of course I'm being supportive but part of me is concerned about her doing it so young. I'm not certain she'd understand rejection if she auditioned for a role and didn't get it, what it might do to her confidence. Whatever happens, whatever she decides we'd all be there for her, including Austin. So that's another change, mom finally asked Austin to move in with her and he finished unpacking his boxes a couple of weeks ago. No longer can I call him tall, dark, and handsome as there's a chance he may end up being my stepdad one day. It's been an adjustment for all having him join the Berry/Corcoran clan, Hannah loves having another parent to spoil her. Something tells me having him around is going to make summer barbecues a little more interesting, the Captain of the fire station is going to have to invite some of this fellow firefighters around sometime or another. Although my dads and firemen might not be the smartest combination, they do love men in uniform.

Planning a birthday party is a good way to occupy your time, even with the feeling that it’ll go unappreciated by the honoree. I can’t say I blame her. What day hasn’t been one of pampering and attention in the last eleven months? I’m told Viviana won’t remember it; that it’s more for the parents, but I’ll gladly take the distraction. I know I’m not the only one.
Death in general has a way of bringing people together, but underneath the glare of knitted groups riddled with regrets and other complications, it can also drive a wedge so thick that you wonder if a bond was ever truly there. I didn’t talk to my grandfather as much as I probably should have, but he never made me feel bad for it. We didn’t see each other much for various reasons. We shared a name, but aside from a love of performing, similarities were hard to come by. He told me a few years ago that he figured out how to use Google and he found plenty about me there. “I only read the good stuff,” he promised. Skepticism is in my nature, but I believed him.
The first call about the stroke had come from my father. “Don’t worry, enjoy your vacation,” he said. “Pop’s getting better. He’s through the worst of it.” The next call about his passing came three days later from my mother. They hadn’t kept the coma from us, but I honestly didn’t think he’d be gone before we got back to New York. I thought we’d have more time. 
Aunt Liza flew in for the service, and also to bring Grandma back to California with her, much to the surprise of everyone. It was a point of contention between her and my father for two weeks, all while the New Jersey house was being packed up and cleared out. The decision had been made, and Grandma just... went with it. I know it broke Dad’s heart. I’m not sure I want confirmation of why, but I’ve heard enough to put together the puzzle that shows how little my aunt trusts her brother. I don’t want to know. It’s entirely selfish, but I don’t want to have anything to hold against her. We bonded while I lived in L.A. She came to my shows, she coached me, and I can’t hold the burden of their relationship. Besides, I think Grandma will like San Francisco. She should be around relatives who she’ll see more often. We could have done better.
So, party planning... There’s nothing difficult about picking out decorations for a one-year-old’s birthday. Some balloons and streamers would do it, but at the same time, wouldn’t. Naturally, you want to do more for your kid, and with this being the first, you want to do it yourself. Someone else is obviously making the cake, though. Toby and Kiran will be understandably absent. They haven’t been in Chicago for a full month yet and are still getting settled, but I’ve been assured that they’re sending a big gift. Part of me hopes that means a big empty box. Viviana has been amused by less. During Christmas, she was far more interested in ripping up the bright pieces of wrapping paper than the actual gifts. There are still toys that haven’t been opened.
Since leaving Galilei, I haven’t had what most would call a real break. The Silver Screen Intensives workshop is officially happening in April over spring break. It’s at capacity with a waitlist for the to-be-determined next session, which was more than Steve and I were expecting for a test run. Every single student is a New York resident between 12 and 16. Kids who chase the rush of energies different from their own, wanting the world to see that they have the power to be anything they choose to be. I was one of them. Deep down, that part of me is still in there--always searching for something more, something different, something to challenge me. Back then it held a level of desperation as if I couldn’t reach my goal fast enough, but the line was shifting forward with every milestone. I guess by now I’ve learned that I can still want more while being satisfied with where I am. 
Immediately following SSI is five weeks of filming Cooksey. I’m excited to get back on set, and after reading the script, it seems they’ve done a good job maintaining the air of mystery around my character, even in his home base. I don’t imagine that will go away unless he becomes a larger part of the series. I’m not getting my hopes up, but I think I’m open to the possibility should it come. Moshed changed my life. I was getting co-star roles up until the second film, then landed my first guest spot on Tested. I got a call not too long ago that they’d like to bring me back for that as well in the show’s final season. To what extent, I’m not sure. More television work could be fun as long as it doesn’t eat up all of my time. I did “take a break” for a reason. And that’s not to say I’ve turned my back on the stage. I’ve bounced back from the Tony loss...mostly. A little space to regroup is necessary.
While family time has been a priority, I don’t think I’ve gotten much better with navigating it around the appearances at Broadway Con, script memorization, and the meetings that have come up since my schedule cleared. I suppose I expected everything to drop off, but in practice that hasn’t been the case. I do spend a lot of my day with my daughter, it just never seems to be enough. But maybe that would ring true even if I was spending every second with her. I don’t want to miss anything. I have enjoyed being able to be the one to put her to bed at night more often these days. Viviana’s walking now, better when I’m holding her hand, but well enough to get across those short distances when something catches her eye. She loves peekaboo and being sung to, and will do her best to mimic your clapping if you start a rhythm. I’m glad my grandparents were able to meet her before they left us. I know she won’t remember Pop, but I’ll be able to tell her a few stories that I know. I can tell her that he decided the moment he saw her to call her Rosie because no one else was doing it, and that she used to reach for his gold watch any time he held her before proceeding with an attempt to eat it. I have the watch now. I’ll give it to her someday.
I wish I could have been a better grandson, visited more, called more, but... he never made me feel bad for it. Perhaps he knew more about who I was than I gave him credit for, and didn’t expect much more than what I gave. I’ll never know for sure, but it’s a nice thought--being enough.

Day#16
Today's prompt was "Favourite Newt's costume".

This one was easy. The first movie blue coat and mustard waistcoast, with the tweed costume (aww, tweed).
For many reasons. The waistcoast is very "earthy" and fits well Newt's personality (and Hufflepuff). The overcoat is of course blue, and a good metaphor for Scamander. Also blue is for many the colour for autism, and even if I'm not a lot in it, that could be another cue to put Newt on the spectrum (before all the ITW).

But I also see a peacock symbolism with this association of colours (+ the iridescent eyes, like the bird's feathers). And well... I really could write something long about it.
I know the first thing we think about (at least in France) when we think about peacock is pride. Which isn't really a Newt's trait. Well, it is, a little bit, if we consider overconfidence which he has (and has not, regarding to people), regarding to his creatures (the playful thing in the shed with the swooping evil, how he interacts with "dangereous beasts", the "I'll catch you thing", etc). This is not a bad thing and one of the side of character, even if it's not the biggest part.
An other important thing regarding to peacocks is immortality, in Middle Age this was the believe and they ate peacocks for that reason. This one is very interesting, because of all the alchemy things that gravitate around Newt (the runes, Newton, Artemis, ...), and the fact that we know he'll have a long life.
Peacock's feathers are associated to "wind of change" too. And that is something that I cleary relate to Newt. He created his own field of study, he uses unconventional magic, and he'll change many things in the WW (American laws about Thunderbirds protection, then all magical beasts, the breeding ban - for the law about the werewolf registry, I have some other thinking that would take me too long to explain). His role during WWII/GWW is probably also another very unconventional thing (at least, that's how I imagine him, and why he's implicated in everything).
But the reborn symbolism can also be linked with Newt's evolution during the first movie, how he opens to people, and meets significant ones who'll share his life until the end. (some even associate peacock with phenix... well...)
In China, the peacock is associated with peace and prosperity. Well, peace is just everything that he tries to do, at least in the "avoiding conflict" part (but he also fought during WWI).
To finish with this part, and something I didn't know until lately is that peacock is associated with water. Some beliefs say that if you want some water, a source, you need to have a peacock (to make things simple). The peacock's cry would mean "the rain is comming" (which, considering all the water symbolism that is in the first film, is very interesting).

I also love how this costume, as is the case, cries how much it lived. I'm one to almost always wear the same clothes, to buy them again when they're completely ruined (and can't be patched anymore). It talks about his time in the field, it talks about his way of life (maybe).

Hi, I love your stuff! Do you have any advice for building magic systems/general world and history building? I've always found it rather difficult, ha.
Well, for fanfiction, I often just throw in whatever sounds cool that doesn't directly contradict what I said before. XD
... but I think you're asking for something more detailed than that.
Usually what happens is that I have several unrelated ideas (frequently inspired by other stuff), I blend them together, and I bounce the plot ideas, character ideas, and worldbuilding ideas off of one another until they fit. Then I extrapolate the rest and adjust when needed.
Let's take my OF In the Water for example. (Disclaimer: I'm making my thought process here much more straightforward and clear than it actually was. In reality it involved a lot of daydreaming, scrapping ideas, and randomly thinking about the story while I was reading or watching other stuff.)
(Under the cut, because it got long.)
I first came up with the idea for ItW after reading a bunch of prompts from @deepwaterwritingprompts (they're really good, you should check them out), but it was very vague. I knew that I wanted the following elements in the story:
A weird small town.
People being turned into crows (specifically someone's brother).
A murder mystery involving a ghost and a magic pocket watch.
Characters who could make jokes about being dead.
Questionably human characters.
Found family.
So, I needed a magic system that could
Turn people into crows
Make people ghosts
Raise the dead
Create questionably human people
and still function on the same underlying rules. 'Everyone has different powers' is something a lot of works do, and something I eventually decided to do for ItW, but I like for there to be a reason for that. I had been holding onto the 'people have powers based on their names' thing for a while, so I decided to use that as a system.
Meanwhile, I had come up with the whole 'amnesiac boy finds ghost and they attempt to solve their respective mysteries together' plot (which of course changed).
Magic sounded like a good reason for a small town to be weird, but after that I needed
A reason for magic to not be widely known about outside of the town (aka a reason for a masquerade)
A way for outsiders to get magic (so the amnesiac boy can have magic and not have to be from the town, making it harder for people to find his parents)
A source of the magic
The first was relatively easy. I just made it so that there was a magical effect that kept people who knew about magic from leaving. But there had to be a reason for this as well. Someone had to put it in place. Not to mention, the repercussions something like that would have on the town at large.
Then, I had to think about stuff that could be the source of magic in small town America. Possibilities were:
Something historical about the land (rejected due to wanting to make the exact location unclear, and also how easy it would be to accidentally be really offensive to indigenous tribes)
Something brought over from Europe
Something environmental that's common but has magical associations historically
No one knows where the magic comes from, some people in this town have it for no observable reason (boring)
Eventually, I decided that the magic was in the town's water (easy enough to accidentally get some) and was sourced from a specific well. I decided this was specific enough and detailed enough to feel solid for readers while not diving down the rabbit hole of why the well was magic and running into midichlorians or something.
Between the reason for the masquerade, the behavior of magic, and the source of magic, I was able to extrapolate a lot of history about what could have gone on in the town and get a lot of backstory for my characters just by considering the possibilities of what those things could have caused.
Like, if people know that magic is based on names, they're either going to give their kids safe-seeming names that won't make them blessed with suck, or really over-the-top 'powerful' names. And, of course, people will want to regulate that, so no one names their kid Nuclear Explosion Jones or something like that, so on and so forth.
Basically, I tried to drop myself into the perspective of people who would have been living in the setting at that time.
And most of my worldbuilding is sort of like that. For fanfic it's easier, because you already have your established premise and rules, you just need to extrapolate and throw in a couple original ideas here and there for seasoning and depth, but it's basically the same with OF as well.
