In this weird wonderful AU Georg fandom that is OFMD we have so many beautiful options. I was never, ever an AU type until now, but I truly can't get enough. Just last night I stayed up entirely too late because I finally got into Wave Hello to the Void, which on its face should absolutely positively not be My Thing, but the AUs we're blessed with here seem to always break that rule (especially with mxmollusca involved because holy shit have you read In Favor With Their Stars yet???).

We're so incredibly lucky y'all. I've been in fandom spaces for a long time but I've never felt this lucky.

We get different takes on time travel. We get the multiverse (and in so many beautiful forms). We get thought-provoking fantastical allegories and devastating (but often hopeful?) prequels with fascinating studies of character and fascinating takes on soul mates. We get complete fantasy overhauls that are gem-like in the beauty and precision of their prose and world-building. We get darling modern AUs and heartwrenching (but still ultimately happily-ending) modern AUs and modern AUs in basically every possible permutation, including ghost stories.

We get dystopias and apocalypses and post-apocalypses, meditations on love and existence, metafictional experiments in Not-RPF that draw even the biggest RPF skeptics (*points to self*) in, leaving us to wrestle with fundamentally altered attitudes toward storytelling that we may never be able to reconcile. Hell, even the missing scenes, canon-divergence, and fix-its hit different. Not to mention westerns with outlaws and cowboys, an archetype which conveniently also manages to scratch the proverbial pirate itch.

Even though pretty much every fandom has these things, for me at least they've never felt quite so imaginative and well-executed. We're so lucky to be here, to be writing for each other and reading for each other and for many of us, feeling creative for the first time in years or even decades. The gay pirates did that for us, because good source material can be the key to great fan works. And whether or not we get a third season, as much as they can't take the show from us, they also can't take away the gift that getting to experience all these fanworks has been. That's something I'm going to keep reminding myself while we wait.

and idk maybe tell your cowboy fanart friends that Ed can also ride horses as a steppe warrior or whatever

THE LITTLE WOLF UPDATE

It's here. The new improved chapters 1-3 have posted. Read The Big Bad Wolf's prequel from the beginning here. Chapters 4 & 5 should be posted a week from now, either on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, depending on when I finish it.

Think of it as my little gift to you all - I hope you all have a Merry Christmas (or a Happy Hanukkah!). And for those who don't celebrate either, then Happy New Year!

If you want more details on all the changes I made to The Little Wolf, read below. It's not too spoil-ery but it's not exactly spoiler-free either, so by all means come back later to see if you found all the changes I made! Extra kudos to those who notices them all.

Over 20k+ of brand new content. This includes two new chapters (chapter 2 & 4 respectively) and around 20 or more new scenes to devour across the entirety of the fic.

Original scenes have been tweaked and expanded upon, with longer conversations or scenes between characters.

All punctuation, grammar and spelling has been proof read repeatedly. I won't say it's all perfect, because I've probably still missed bits, but its in a much better state than it was before. Dialogue grammar in particular has had a complete overhaul, which should make everything much easier to read.

Each chapter has song lyrics at the beginning, fitting the vibes or themes of the chapter. This is a part of a playlist that I will share in Running With Wolves after completing the editing to The Big Bad Wolf (which has it's own share of songs, compiled with a mix of the music I listen to while writing and music I feel embodies each chapter).

In a similar thread, new timestamps have been added whenever there is a time or location jump. Again, this is a change that will be happening to The Big Bad Wolf as well to make flashbacks clearer. Upon completion of TBBW's edit, a timeline will be added to Running With Wolves so you can see all of the events that take place in the series in chronological order.

Historical accuracy has been given a bigger focus. Obviously, there's still a need for suspension of disbelief (vikings never travelled that far south in America, horses weren't introduced to America until the 1500s etc) as I'm no history buff and I personally believe you can allow a little leeway for sake of creative freedom. However, that said, I've tried to right the most egregious wrongs by Julie Plec: the white washing of the native Americans, the almost European-Christian culture of the Mikaelsons' village (views on bastards, women like Rebekah not carrying arms and being all innocently feminine even though they were warrriors too in viking culture, lack of historical accuracy in settings/costumes/props etc) and of course, the complete lack of explanation behind how the vikings arrived in Southern America. Hopefully it should feel more alive, and I'll probably add even more in the final FINAL edit that will happen once I've finished TBBW.

The Little Wolf's main focus is Klaus' characterisation arc. However, in this rewrite, all the Mikaelson siblings get more screen time and you get their characterisation arcs in the background, as a treat.

Henrik is much more fleshed out as a character. He's mischievous and playful, a lot like Kol, with other attributes from the other siblings thrown in. He's also got more Youngest Sibling energy, just as the other siblings have Middle Child/Eldest Child energy, because in a fic about family, really that's the most important detail of them all.

I've delved deeper into Mikael and Esther's treatment of Klaus and how it wasn't much different to how they treated the other siblings after all. Don't get me wrong - in my mind Klaus was dealt the worst of Mikael's physical fury, but I don't believe 'he was singled out' is as black and white as the show would lead you to believe. That's not how abusive households work.

Talking about Klaus' characterisation, think of this fic as the death of Niklaus Mikaelson, leading to the birth of Klaus, The Original Hybrid. The Little Wolf leading the way for The Big, Bad Wolf. You'll get innocent baby boi Niklaus of course, but that same innocent kid has a feral side. When you become a vampire, it heightens who you already are and Klaus - he had that fury and violence in him all along, and it wasn't just because of the wolf.

In a lot of human-era Originals fics and the actual shows, when they're turned into vampires its all very planned out. Idk, like Esther and Mikael are evil villains twirling their moustaches? Turning their children into vampires, its all very pre-meditated, oh the horror and everything. And although there is elements of that in this rewrite (they ARE shitty, evil parents after all) I tried to do something a little original myself. In this fic, more focus is given to the family's grief and how Henrik's death becomes the shatterpoint for EVERYTHING. His death causes every bad decision made by the family from that moment on. It's less of "I planned to make my children the most powerful beings to ever walk this earth" and more of "I tried to save my children and didn't expect ANY of this so wtf do I do now, another bad decision? Yeah let's do that". You feel me? Hopefully that comes across anyways.

Okay what haven't I mentioned yet... WEREWOLF LORE. Yeah that's been expanded on and fleshed out some more. You get a glimpse into my take on how the werewolf gene is triggered, along with a coming of age ritual, general culture, outsider prejudice against werewolves etc...Klaus' views on them is much more explored, especially in relation to his heritage. Kinda playing with the idea that him being a bastard was never the problem to Mikael or Klaus - it was him being a werewolf.

Since I started re-writing this I watched way too many of Mike Flanagan's series'. So I kinda went all 'Midnight Mass' on the Mikaelson's village. Oopsies.

In a similar thread, the raven from the Fall of The House of Usher left a bigger impact on me than I like to admit. That's something so sexy about an omen of death okay leave me alone I NEED THE FORESHADOWING

this is a regular question asked on the discord so I wanted to put together my own constant pack to link.

These are NOT all mods I use. These are the mods I’m **completely confident **in recommending together, that definitely work well, combine well and won’t create any cognitive dissonance.

(Note that I’m not listing any prerequisites. Whichever mod you’re installing, you obviously need to install its prerequisites too)

I’m doing a deep-read of the Japanese original print (reread) and Overhaul 1.0 (first read) side-by-side, and writing down everything I notice from small details, version differences, translation differences, etc.

I really love the "train conductor/bus driver/etc puts themself in danger to protect the passengers" trope- NOOOOOOOOOO COOL CONDUCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Small correction: These first onomatopoea are actually...flesh sounds...... And I wasn't really thinking about corrections for this one, more just for nuance, but Neon says something like "it's unfortunate, but..." in this line.

A small difference here: in my version it's actually CO2, not oxygen that's being supplied to the Heat Plant. However, considering that O2 is a fuel for combustion and CO2 is a byproduct, it may be an error on Nightow's part.

This is one of the first indications of who Kaito actually is. He knows all of this off the top of his head, which catches the Captain by surprise.

It also provides information about Plants. This could either mean that all Plants require some kind of fuel, or that the Plants can utilize those resources in some other way to help the Sandsteamer.

Get graphited idiot.

We also get to see more of Kaito's attachment to this Sandsteamer.

Here, the original line is more like "Why would Brilliant Dynamites Neon have to listen to you when this treasure—the prey I've been hunting—is right in front of me!?"

This is where I notice that Neon has a sort of obsession with "beauty," not just in the regular sense but also in his own way. He obviously values visuals—his over-the-top fashion and desire to go out with a bang—but to him, it's also a question of dignity. (this will be on the exam yall)

Even the gang member is getting worried about what Neon might do to Kaito... And here's where we find out why Kaito knows so much and wants to protect the Sandsteamer!

Notes on the original phrasing of this line, since I saw a few posts comparing the Dark Horse and Overhaul versions.

The Japanese line is「パッと散りな　小僧」パッ(pa') is an onomatopoea for "pop," "poof," or a release (e.g. letting go of an object). 散る(chiru, used here in command form) means "scatter," most commonly associated with falling cherry blossom petals. From that, it's also a euphemism for dying. i can go on for another paragraph on the association of cherry blossoms with Japanese views on life/death but you can figure that out. or google it idk

I think this line is another excellent representation of Neon's values on beauty and death.

I love this page so much!! The flow comes to a complete stop, and the tension that has been building throughout the last few pages is at its peak here. The composition is also excellent. The art is symmetrical, and Neon's giant outfit follows the lines leading from the bottom corners of the page up to Vash's gun, where they intersect right in the middle. I JUST LOVE THESE KINDS OF COMPOSITIONS SO MUCH.....

It took a while to figure out what happened here, but I think Vash either sensed danger or actually dodged a bullet, and chose to jump back out. Love the way he's firmly holding Kaito's overalls while Kaito doesn't understand anything that's going on lol

The silly goofies... theyre screaming crying shitting themselves out there....

It's a bit hard to see, but Kaito is screaming "AAAHHH PULL ME UPPP" in the middle panel.

This exchange after the two get to safety is also so silly... There's a missing "whrrrr drill drill" SFX for Vash's drill hand (?). I saw a photo of the Dark Horse version which was missing it in the same way, with the leftover ン on Vash's cheek.

I forgot to highlight it, but this note pertains to Vash's second speech bubble about death and destruction. The Japanese version of the line is something like "I swear!! I have at least 2 digits' worth of death-gods(死神) or poverty-gods(貧乏神) haunting me!!" Death-gods/shinigami are already well-known in the West so I won't explain that here. The second one, poverty-god/binbōgami, is a similar kind of thing, except it brings poverty to whoever it clings onto (instead of death). Fun fact: Binbōgami are said to like yakimiso (grilled miso paste).

VASH'S SOUPY BRAIN!!! The mystery has been solved!!!

But first, in order... Vash's first line is more like "We can't be worrying about all this right now." It could keep the original phrasing, but the main idea is to change "me" to "us."

The next (most important) line is actually "We gotta save brainpower [for the matter at hand]." The confusion lies in the word 脳みそ, which literally translates to "brain miso," but is actually the word for brain tissue, and thus brainpower. It has nothing to do with miso soup! The origin I wrote in the middle-left of the image is...dubious.... I told my mom about this just now, and she mentioned that it might be called that because みそ(miso) also means the center or key aspect of something. Weblio also says it signifies innards (like from crab or shrimp), similar to what I wrote in the annotation at first. I'll fix it in the document later

Also, I would phrase the last line as "I mean, we're gonna stop this ship, right!?"

I didn't know his name was spelled Kaite in this version. My Japanese version copy has that bottom part in a regular speech bubble, and with the font for the boxes. It's most likely just a version-exclusive error. He also says that his dad "found" the ship, but I'm not sure if that's another error or not since this translation makes more sense.

This line is phrased more like "Just for a little bit of cash, I'm now taking advantage of you for a deal with a crook."

I really loved the execution of this scene in the '98 anime. get hammered into the ground boy The final line is from Kaito, not Vash, and should be "...Yeah!!"

hooooooo boy, the party's gettin' started...and by "party" I mean "First Big Bad Fucked-Up Fight of Trigun Maximum" 😬 so here we go! here are my thoughts and things and translation weirdness I find as I re-read ch 7 and finish up vol 2!

(NOTE: I'm reading the Dark Horse [physical] and the Overhaul [online] translations side-by-side)

I. love. how off-kilter the panels with Vash in them are on the first page. it emphasizes the wrongness of what Vash just witnessed in a way we haven't seen from any other Gung-Ho Gun up to this point.

on the next pages, some little translation differences - and, once again, I find the Overhaul's much more nuanced, and it makes a lot more sense, considering what happened right at the end of the previous chapter.

anyway, Wolfwood shoots at Leonov - across 2 pages! - and I think it's worth noting here that this is the second time Wolfwood has directly interfered with a confrontation between Vash and a Gung-Ho Gun (the first being when he shot Rai-Dei dead in ch 4 of this volume).

after Wolfwood shoots, there's some speech bubble mixed-uppedness between translations (also, if Dark Horse had put "fuck" in its translation, they prolly would've had to sell Trigun Maximum in plastic wrap like a yowee jgdxjgxjg). and...I have no idea why Dark Horse changed Leonov's lines to be about Wolfwood's gun 🤨

ok so Dark Horse's translation always had me thinking Leonov was talking about Unica's "death" at the hands of Wolfwood. the Overhaul clearly shows that that's not the case.

...and here's where I realized it might be a good idea to make sure my comparisons are, uh. tumblr-safe.

BUT ANYWAY. some subtle differences in wording here between translations, plus Dark Horse leaves out the original contents of that one whole speech bubble entirely. and the "model" thing? I'm thinking that was a misunderstanding of where to put the "imported" katakana word 🤔

...and here, Dark Horse is just completely throwing out IMPORTANT GOTDAMN DETAILS. if not for the Overhaul, I'd never know just how extremely fucked up Leonov's puppets are - that makes the entire thing with him THAT MUCH MORE HORRIFIC so I guess I can kind of understand why Dark Horse left it out, actually;;;;;

Dark Horse. pls.

anyway, this is interesting. I saw a post somewhere that listed plant abilities and whatnot. to me, then, this bit here seems like emotional projection/forced empathy...

...and this next bit supports that. also, the Overhaul does a much better job at conveying Vash's uncanny non-humanity.

i've been thinking, as of recent, about the absurdity that New Math as a historical & cultural point in american history. not that i....ever really cared for math....looks down at a notepad and grimaces. so, a complete overhaul of the way that Mathematics was thought - its introduction fuelled, particularly, by cold war-era paranoia of soviet engineers and mathematicians, & in a broader sense their entire intelligentsia...a source of brainpower the U.S was comparatively lacking in. but the measures it brought forward were rendered - despite being a seemingly sound idea on paper - shockingly impotent. mostly due to backlash, frustration and confusion from parents and teachers. & thus it is abandoned shortly after - the USSR not having to do go through nearly as dramatic shift in educational policy to maintain, or even refine, their advantage. it's like attempting to change the method with which you lead a horse to water, in an envigored attempt to make it drink. it's...almost as if....there was some other way to explain why the soviet union fostered talented scientists in a way that america wasn't able to...scratching at head dumbfoundedly. rubs eyes. perhaps i'm running out of things to talk about. perhaps my next post can be something profoundly personal? how about a short, 2 sentence joke post for 10?

Im gonna be mean for a hot second and I apologize in advance.

I've seen a lot of "Redisigning [insert character here]" posts across multiple platforms. The art itself is always great, a lot of magnificent artists, but the designes are not it tbh. Because they aren't a redesigne, they're completely overhauling the og designe.

I am being as nice as possible, I do not hate these people or their art, but like, thats not a redesigne! This is probably just my opinion but a redesigne should improve upon the original. Yes sertant things will be different but they aren't crazy. Maybe like an extra accessory, a bit of a color change, or maybe a change in physical build, but thats about it. The biggest change would be a change in style I guess.

I've seen redesignes like mlp ones were people will take a character like Pinkie Pie and completely throw out the original designe except for the poofy hair. Like, so many i have seen where she isn't even pink anymore. Another thing is Rainbow Dash, sometimes those redesignes look like the artist whent "how dull can I get it while still being a rainbow?" The really good redesignes I've seen add things from actual myths like the unicorns being skinnier, with more fleshy tails, and a beard. Or pegadi having more feathers. Or earth ponies being built more like strong horses. They dont throw out the original designe, they improve on it. Maybe a few colour changes here and there, but you can still tell who it is.

Tho, at the end of the day I'm not a professional character artist. This is all just kinda how I feel. Don't go onto people's posts and bully them for their designes. If you really want to point out how you feel be as polite as possible and make it clear there is no hostility. Maybe even frame it as a question, like "why did you choose those colours/designe themes?" Just don't bully.

Side note: under those posts I see a lot of "I love this! Why couldn't the show do designes like these!😍😍😍" heres why! Its not animation friendly. Too much in a character can be bad for animation studios. Too complex and would probably take up budget. Never get mad at studios for the current designes they have, you are allowed to dislike the genuinly bad designes tho. I'm not saying you can't. I'm just saying have respect for the character artists and what they are able to make with what they have.

2 perfectly awkward photos to compare from and even in the awkwardness you can tell which one she's more comfortable in😂

But anyways! Top photo is January 2022 and bottom photo is January 2023. Her lifestyle didn't change much from her previous home to mine. She's out 24/7 w/ a buddy and has access to hay at all times. Major differences, she has access to multiple kinds of quality hays 24/7 with me and we completely overhauled her diet otherwise. She was on SO much grain before, two different ones but both with a super high protein and low fat, also high in sugar & starch. She's on maybe a pound of grain(the lowest nsc on the market triple crown senior gold bc shes so picky and won't eat the VB blend otherwise lol also ps the regular senior made her fat but WILD) and then hay pellets and vermont blend! Also gets beet pulp at night and a flax oil because she refuses to eat ground flax smh lol. Her topline is obviously much different because she's back in work but i'd say even when she had lots of time off from me being gone/her having some issues it didn't really change much. I'd like to think diet plays a solid role in that when the fitness isn't there. The biggest difference just looking at her is her coat!!! It was rough to the touch when I got her and she had a lot of wirey hairs. Some flaky dry skin as well. I can't even believe thats the same horse! Pretty much same light and no filters. She was blanketed in her previous home and I do lightly blanket as well because she will literally take it out on her mini friend when she's chilly. I'd say grooming isn't much different, I pretty much only groom days I ride and mostly only use a very soft brush and a hard one on her legs. Nothing special at all! Its so rewarding seeing the transformation! I take so much pride in how my horses look and feel. I also have to laugh because all of Honey's team that helps her feeling her best always say she's fat. At first I get offended because I don't think so but then I laugh because i'd much rather they say my TB is fat then skinny!!! Next up is her hoof transformation. Still steady slow progress but shes come so far. I think a couple more cycles and we'll have never known how bad they were before.

KinnPorsche The Series La Forte Thoroughly enjoyable and did exactly what it said on the tin: 'dark mafia romance'. If I don't get a season 2 I might have to write my own.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 Going back to the roots of Discovery as a science ship, and watching these nerds just excel, Trek crossing the galactic barrier as the new frontier, everything about Michael's friendship with the Federation President...simply outstanding, the best of Trek.

Star Trek: Picard season 2 The Q are easily my least favourite Trek concept, but combining them with the total overhaul of the Borg, a reexamination of Soong, and the deep dive into Picard's psyche worked gangbusters for me. And Q doing it all as a dying act of love for Picard resonated emotionally.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 Old school-style Trek at its very best. Hemmer going over that cliff to save them all from the Gorn made me WEEP. I'm ready for season 2 because I NEED an Ortegas episode.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 Miriam, Miriam, Miriam. Watching her self-sabotage because she's actually terrified of prime time was AMAZING. She's comfortable being the biggest fish in a series of small ponds but despite saying she wants the big leagues she blows every opportunity at them. Lenny calling her out was a long time coming. And Susie soaring as Miriam stagnates? Gold. Can't wait to see what happens next.

To My Star 2: Our Untold Stories I love watching what happens after the happily ever after because let's be real: most of these couples would struggle. We need more reminders in media that actually, love does NOT conquer all. Ji Woo and Seo Joon always had a reckoning coming, because Seo Joon thought if he could love Ji Woo hard enough that Ji Woo would feel it. In the end, Ji Woo had to work through his traumas on his own and come back to Seo Joon as a whole person, and hope that Seo Joon could forgive his trespasses. A beautiful meditation on how much of a struggle love can actually be.

Slow Horses Simply outstanding. Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott-Thomas put on a clinic, and the plot is delightful.

Quaranthings 2 The Besh/Che/Kulas poly situation is super fun, and I could listen to Rocky and Judah call each other akin all day, every day.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 One thing for sure is that this show always keeps it fresh. I could have done with about 99% less Allison angst this season though.

Silent Witness season 25 The return of Sam Ryan! Jack and Nikki finally get it together! An overarching mystery! Another solid outing from one of the best shows on television anywhere in the world.

Russian Doll season 2 I was so excited but after watching I found myself wondering whether a season 2 was necessary.

CURRENTLY WATCHING

Yumi's Cells 2 Just plain fun. Yu Mi and Ba Bi's relationship has a completely different flavour from her relationship with Wung, and the cells remain as entertaining as ever.

Money Heist The trashy energy combined with the twisty plot leave me intrigued and ready for more.

I Promised You the Moon Yes yes, you all hate it, I simply don't agree.

New Equipment, Generator 07

We have just finished a complete refurbishment and overhaul of one of our compact generator systems. TBF, this one is a bit special, in that it was gifted to me by my late Father in Law. I wanted to keep it working as it provides a connection to him. It has actually turned out a bit like Triggers broom in Only Fools and Horses. It has had a new cabinet, radiator, alternator and control systems. If the engine blows then there really isn't much left of the original. We actually ended up using this one much more than we expected, due to its low running costs, making it perfect for smaller events such as a coffee cart hire, etc. What happened was the unit we were using was designed to demount from its transport trailer into the back of one of our vans. This worked great, up until the original casing fell apart due to corrosion. Being a Kubota engine there was plenty of life left in the actual unit itself. The Original Rotted Apart Casing It was built on four castors, up until one corner fell off and it came back on three wheels. Luckily whilst obtaining a new generator to build into the rear of our fire engine, we noticed that the dealer we were dealing with had a large supply of new cases for compact generators. We obtained one of these, which were priced at a really keen price point, and set about the construction. The cases were pretty complete except for things like control panels, door locks, etc. We managed to track these down, with a delay on waiting for a delivery from China for some parts unobtainable over here. The Final Construction The unit when it was constructed looked superb. Unfortunately following the advice of some experts to bond the Earth line to the Neutral, a requirement in most generators, the unit went bang. Seems that on centre tapped alternators this is a big no no. So back to our supplier for a new alternator. Unfortunately when we removed the case to wire the new one up, we found that it also was a centre tapped alternator. Cue another trip up north to obtain a non centre tapped version. So far so good. Except when we came to assemble it, the coupling system didn't meet up. Seems our original unit had a recessed flywheel, which left the tapered shaft mount about 5 mmm short. Cue yet another trip to swap flywheels for the correct one. This one happily did fit, and everything went together perfectly. Well almost. Whilst screwing in the Earth point connection, the end fell off my screwdriver, and into the alternator internals. Meaning another complete strip down of the cabinet, to then strip the alternator down to retrieve said fallen off bit. Happily this time everything did go together properly. oh man, I am having a LOT of feelings about ch 4 - it's hitting me completely differently from any other time I've read it (mostly thanks to the Overhaul 💕) so. let's get into that. thoughts and things and translation weirdness I find as I re-read Trigun Maximum vol 3.

ok so this is a silly lil Dark Horse thing: at the end of ch 3, Vash called Leonov "Player Emilio" - but then ch 4 is titled "Emilio the Player." Dark Horse so silly~

🎶 WHERE DID U COME FROM, WHERE DID U GO / WHERE DID U COME FROM, PUPPET-MAN SHOW 🎶

ok but srsly - doing VS going ("going" makes more sense contextually). next, the Overhaul makes it clear that Brad could be hearing Vash and/or Wolfwood fighting, based on the explicit mention of gunfire - although I suppose this could anyone else? sad faces are bc I like Sensei. I don't like how Dark Horse kinda makes it seem like Brad's more angy than concerned?

on the next panel on the next page, there are some other translation discrepancies. Dark Horse has "You... Can you come out of this, grinning and victorious...?! Vash the Stampede." meanwhile, the Overhaul has "You think you can get out of this... You think you can win... Vash the Stampede?!"

subtle differences here, but imo the Overhaul is more explicit/straightforward in its explanation - and it feels like what Vash is saying supports what I was saying last chapter about how Leonov separates/distances himself from what he's doing. there is, in fact, a distinct disconnect.

then, on the next 2 pages...it feels like, as Vash lists names, he's inching his way toward a reconnection. Leonov's expression is different right before Isabel is mentioned - or rather, he's not completely expressionless anymore. I'd even say it's like this...slowly-dawning recognition? before he completely breaks at "Isabel".

important distinctions here imo. "lie" implies a denial, while "things" implies Leonov doesn't/can't recognize who Vash is referring to - further illustrating the disconnect between the GHG Leonov and his former self, Emilio.

next, "point" + "continued existance" are huge here. it's not a question of Vash's reason for being - it's "why shouldn't I kill you?" which flows right into Leonov saying (paraphrasing both translations here) "I don't care about his punishment" - which I thought was in reference to Vash continuing to live and being 'punished' by the GHGs, but now, I think it's more likely he's referring to how Knives would punish Leonov for going against orders and killing Vash.

SENSEIIIIIIIIIIII 😭

the hands bit in Dark Horse feels kinda misleading? like...yeah, Leonov uses his hands to make and control the puppets, but the point isn't so much that as it is how easily Leonov has been able to do it all thus far.

(...it also occurs to me just now that, in Vash calling him "Emilio" this whole time...to me, it's like...despite the horrific things this puppeteer is doing, despite what he's become, despite this monstrous role he's cast himself as...he's still this human person whom Vash knows. it's not a denial of the new identity - it's acknowledgment of his continued humanity. which makes him "family" to Vash. lol I just made myself sad.)

now, let's dig deeper into "guignol"! from what I understand, it's not just any French puppet show - it's a genre characterized by being horrifically graphic and gory and morally bankrupt! 😁

...and here, we have interesting typesetting choices on Dark Horse's part...

once again, the Overhaul's translation is much more clear. also, religious imagery methinks? with that last thing Vash says?

...some weird speech bubble-swapping between translations...

I always thought this line in Dark Horse was weird - it makes so much more sense as a question, like how the Overhaul does it.

...with all that blood...I think...this is where the people-puppets get made... 😱
