Anime Magic 2023: Saturday
Saturday morning kicked off with breakfast in @shbumi's room, then she and I did some PoGo in the area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At about 1040, we headed toward the hotel ballroom to join the line for Drag Show.
Tumblr media
It seemed odd to be going to a drag event in the morning, but apparently Oriana requested it when scheduling. There were some technical hiccups and delays, so the show proper (which was scheduled at 1100) didn't start until approximately 1115.
And what a show it was! As always, a kickass event. I apologize for any blurriness to the photos, but it definitely was a great time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the drag show, we stuck around for an Iaido demonstration and discussion. @lechevaliermalfet got to go onstage for some hands-on work while @shbumi and I remained in the audience, listening as the presenter explained what the groups on stage were doing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Iaido, it was time for some lunch. And then for shopping!
We made sure to make a pit stop at @artbyquinton's booth. It's always great to see what new stuff he's rolling out and it's also a good chance to catch up if we haven't seen him for awhile.
After his booth, we checked out the other offerings on display from various artists and dealers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It may seem a strange thing to say, but in some ways, the artist alley and dealer hall feel too big for a con the size of Anime Magic. Like, I love having so many booths to visit. But I also don't budget for AM the same way I would for say, ACen or Otakon, in terms of money for the exhibit hall. I budget less, since the event is smaller. So then I feel bad when I see the amount of cool stuff on hand. There were plenty of artists where I ended up grabbing business cards to hopefully support them at a later time.
After shopping, it was getting on late afternoon and it was finally time for another panel: The Best of Steampunk Anime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was a cool panel, and it was presented by a member of the Chicago Steampunk Exposition team. So you know he knew his stuff. First, we were given a short background on steampunk, then divided into small groups to brainstorm anime we thought *might* be on the list that our presenter intended to talk about. Each group offered up a title, and we ranked what was offered.
And then, we began to review this list by CBR. For each title offered, we had some discussion as to why CBR included it...and why our presenter would or wouldn't include it in his own list.
I think I had more fun and learned more in this panel than I have in almost every other steampunk-themed panel I've attended.
After the panel, we ordered dinner from Giordano's, but knew we would have an hour to kill before it arrived. So @lechevaliermalfet and I checked out the itasha car show while @shbumi chilled in her room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loved wandering the cars and looking at the different wrap jobs, even if I didn't always know the show being represented.
I also tried not to pay too much attention to Tattoo Alley, which was right next door. See, I had considered getting a tattoo during AM 2022 but decided against it. And this year, I had planned to get one if the tattoo artist returned - but you aren't supposed to get a tattoo during pregnancy. So I just looked at the increased number of options and hey, we'll see. Maybe if we attend AM 2024, I'll get one. Next year's con schedule is a bit up in the air, since we'll have an infant to consider.
Tumblr media
We grabbed some drinks and extra snacks from the Hello Tokyo booth (and got some pocky balloons) and then headed back to the hotel for dinner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After dinner, we went down to the Anime Singalong Dance Party with Kohei. It was scheduled for 2100, but technical issues meant that it ran late. As on Friday, it was great to just sing and dance along to anime OPs with a bunch of other nerds.
Tumblr media
Kohei didn't get to put on as long of a show as Friday night due to the tech issues, as there was a concert scheduled immediately after him.
Crunk Witch are a married couple who go for an electro-pop sound. They did some kickass 80s covers during their show. Annnd they also hit tech issues. Really, this seems to be a recurring thing for AM.
Tumblr media
Oh! and on a random note, I got a free glow bracelet from the Atlas cosplayer, who was hanging out just outside of the concert.
Tumblr media
I don't expect free stuff from cosplayers, for obvious reasons, so it was cool to get something.
I also grabbed a Crunk Witch CD after the concert. There was a dance scheduled for after Crunk Witch, but for us, it was time to call it a night. We were wiped.

I have just got back from my first trip to Japan! (hence my inactivity on here, sorry!). I had an amazing time out there and I thought I’d post something a bit different to my usual posts about the Magical Mirai I went to, which is a massive vocaloid concert out in Japan.
Anyone in two minds whether to go to the M.M or not, I can definitely say that as long as you enjoy this style of music you will thoroughly enjoy yourself! Personally vocaloid tunes help to cheer me up and make me smile on not so cheerful days (which I have a lot of!), a lot of the music I enjoy listening to is much darker but sometimes I really need something more joyful like these tracks to keep me going on really tough days. The videos of the show on youtube honestly doesn’t do the show justice and being there is a completely different experience! I went to the final Tokyo one but I imagine the shows in Osaka are just as great.
To get a ticket for the live show (internationally anyways) you have to enter into a lottery for one so you don’t get to pick your seat sadly. I was incredibly lucky and somehow ended up 6 rows from the front so I had a great view of the stage, since I’m such a shorty that was perfect for me! I can say being that far in front the music is incredibly loud, which was great for me!! Maybe not so great for anyone with really sensitive ears though!
The exhibition is just as fun and there was lots to see! Lifesize models, itasha cars that the owner was nice enough to let me sit in… and my personal favourite - a prop-up classroom of plushies! (<3). If you’re lucky and happen to be in the area at the time, it would be worth going to the exhibition on it’s own if you’re a fan.
I’ll be going along to the first ever Europe Expo in London too, so maybe I’ll post some pics of that on here as well. They advertised the European Expo at the Magical Mirai quite a bit - a surprise to me as I thought if they were to advertise anything outside Japan, it would be the American/Mexican Expo… but hey if they’re trying to ship everyone out to London to see if they can sink the place then cool go for it!!! Hopefully they have something special planned for all the Europe Expo shows =)
If anyone wants to know anything about my experiences at the show feel free to ask! ^-^

San Japan X marked the 10 year anniversary of the annual Japanese culture and anime convention held in San Antonio, Texas. I have never attended this con before but it was recommended, so I decided I should go check it out. Unfortunately the aftermath of hurricane Harvey meant many parts of Houston were still suffering with the effects of massive flooding. This made me wonder if I would even be able to get out of Houston to attend the convention at all. Spoiler Alert! I made it.
I was definitely undecided for a couple of days, not even sure if I should attempt to get there. Finally, waking up Saturday morning I made the decision to take a quick break from Houston and all that was going on there, and headed out to San Antonio to check out San Japan convention. Since my daughter joined me for the last trip to San Antonio, this time my son joined me as his interest in anime has been increasing lately. We got a little bit of a late start, so it was already afternoon when we arrived in San Antonio, but we were still very anxious to check out the con and see everything that was going on.
After we parked the car, we headed to the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, but it turned out that the actual entrance to the con was on the other side of the building,  by the Lila Cocktell Theatre, good thing I enjoy a good walk! Once we finally picked up our badges, we made our way into the exhibit halls to check out the convention and to take photos of the cosplayers there.  As soon as you walk in, you were greeted with the itasha display on both side with the gaming section surrounding that. After checking out the rides, we made our way around all the games including consoles and arcades. Next, we proceeded into Artist Alley, followed by the Dealer Area, to check out all the stuff they had for sale. There was plenty of things we both wanted but we waited till later in the day to make our purchase so we didn’t have to carry it around all day (not my first Con!). I occasionally snapped a few more photos as we ventured through the halls, but I mostly focused on checking out each vendor and artist to see what was for sale. After making a few rounds through the halls, I went about snapping photos of cosplayers until it was time for the cosplay contest to begin, which we had tickets for. We made a quick break to recharge and refuel before we continued (Editor’s note: They sat down and ate). We ended up venturing upstairs to check out what was going on in the different rooms including video rooms, panels, and more. We even stumbled across a retro gaming room where they have some of the original gaming consoles out for all to play, along with some trivia.
Finally, it was cosplay contest time! We made our way back to the Lila Cocktell Theatre where the contest was held and made our way up to the front row so I could take photos. If it wasn’t for Harvey, I would have had a long lens that I would normally use in situations like this, thanks Harvey… Anyway, first up was the standard cosplay contest portion where the cosplayers walk across the stage showing off their costumes. What I found a bit different was that everyone had a little bit of a performance as they walked across. Maybe just a very elaborate walk “in-character” if you will, but they all definitely put a little more thought into it than the usual cosplay show lineup. Unfortunately, being on the right side of the stage, most of the cosplayers looked down the center or to the left side so I wasn’t able to capture many great shots from my vantage point. As some of the cosplayers crossed the stage, the house lights were dimmed as they approached the center of hte stage to show off their glowing costumes and accessories.
Once that portion of the contest was over, it was, as usual, followed up with the performance section of the contest filled with instrumental performances, some dancing, and a skit. Surprisingly there weren’t many performances in the contest at this con. As the judges headed out to make their decisions, we were left with some on stage musical performances to entertain us as we waited for the judges to return with their announcements. Before we found out who won the awards, there was a group of other awards given out covering the Hall Cosplay contest. Following that, the cosplay contest judges came out on stage to announce their picks and the winners for 2017. We hung around a little while longer before heading out to eat and ending our first day at the con.
The next day, we returned to the convention with a few more spectators, as my parents and sister joined us for the final day. Since we already checked out all the artist booths and dealers area, we kind of showed them around for a bit with a guided tour. Not too much longer I ventured out with my son as I proceeded to mostly focus on capturing photos of the cosplayers I came across, and there were plenty. Since my son has been watching more anime with me, he made sure to call out all the characters he knew as we walked around. To me, I love seeing the costumes and how much detail is put into them even from the novice cosplayers. With every con, most cosplayers dress from the genre of the con but there are still those who don’t. Either way, no one really cares that much and we are all here to enjoy the con and share our passion.
After a lunch break, we continued roaming around for several hours as we made sure to pick up all the items we wanted to purchase there. There wasn’t much more time left when we finally headed out to make our journey back home, even then there were more people still walking into the convention center for the con. I definitely enjoyed this con, although, admittedly, I have enjoyed all of them, I was pleased I was able to get away and be apart of San Japan X. I didn’t regret coming out at all. We both had a great time and I look forward to joining San Japan once again next year.

Yuzuki Yukari Racing Crowdfunding Has Concluded!
As of January 10th, the Yuzuki Yukari Racing Project “Ready For?” crowdfunding project has wrapped up! To thank the fans for their generous donations, project organizer Takahiro Watanabe had this to say:
Our crowdfunding campaign has been going on since last year, and it now comes to a close today. Thanks to everyone’s generous support, we’ve raised a grand total of ¥4,209,000 JPY in donations from an amazing 266 different donors, far exceeding what any of us on the team could have ever predicted. Thank you all so much for your warm wishes and incredible support. With this funding, we can now enter at least one race in the upcoming Super Taikyu, and aim to enter more depending on how well sales of the Racing Yukari merchandise go. Furthermore, we are currently preparing all the donor rewards and will ship them out as early as possible. We will continue to update this page, as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages, with reports of our future efforts, and would be overjoyed with your ongoing support.
Tumblr media
Watanabe also uploaded a video onto his Niconico channel (with Yukari’s Vocaloid voice doing the talking) discussing the details of the campaign. The main points are:
The team had a bit of a hard time finding where their assigned exhibition stage for the Yuzuki Yukari itasha would be located at the Tsumagoi resort. But they got there eventually, and MazodoraP was able to unveil the itasha that they will soon be racing in! The unveiling attracted tons of spectators, even those who weren’t previously interested in racing!
The Yuzuki Yukari itasha will be a Honda Fit GE8, with a sticker scheme and paint job designed by Suke-san. The front hood and side doors of the vehicle will sport the official Racing Yukari main visual art...
Tumblr media
Yoshiyuki Tsuruga (aka CircuitP) raced for the Yuzuki Yukari Racing Team in his “Yuzuki Yukari ZAP 10V ED” Formula 1 race car last year during the Super-FJ Regional Championship Series.
For more info and pics/videos of the cars, visit VNN!

The entrance to Animanga expo hall.
Animanga took over the Fairplex Expo Hall #4 this weekend from August 3rd-5th. The theme is in the name itself; the convention aims to celebrate Anime, Manga, and Japanese pop culture.
Badges
Standard badges were priced at $10 a day or $15 for the weekend. Premium badges were $40 a day or $60 for the weekend. Premium badges included perks of a standard badge but also access to the VIP lounge and preferred seating. They could be purchased online or at the gate.
Parking
Parking was $12 a day on the Fairplex grounds. Although the pass stated that there was no re-entry to the gate for the same day, we didn’t have any issue getting back in. The parking was generally about a 5 minute walk to the expo hall. If you parked further you could also take a shuttle closer to the front.
Food
Food was available in and outside of the expo hall. There were concession stands where you could buy yourself a corn dog or a beer. Outside there were a few food trucks like Okamoto Kitchen.
Bison Burger Truck and Okamoto Kitchen set up right outside the entrance of the convention.
Panels / Events
Animanga hosted panels each day although differently than one might be accustomed to experiencing. The panels were held openly on a stage. Seats for events and panels were open seating. When seats were taken up, attendees were allowed to sit or stand on the side to watch.
The panels included Youtubers like Caleb Hyles and Lost Pause, musicians such as Midnight Shinigami and Kohei & TiA, and even events for attendees to participate in such as the Cosplay Contest and Otaku Trivia.
It's showtime!!! Amazing performances by @KoheiSings and @tia_singer at #Animanga2018. . . . #anime #manga #gaming #animegirl #animelove #otakuindo #otaku #fairplex #animangaexpo #animanga #newanime #anime2018 #animeworld #otakuworld

Guests
Guests for the convention weren’t just limited to panelists. Prominent voice actors like Max Mittelman and Kyle McCarley were there for photo ops and autographs. There were also popular cosplayers like Ashlynn Dae, and Angi Viper who set up booths for guests to take pictures and discuss their work.
Exhibitors & Artist Alley
The convention brought a number of vendors and artists to showcase their products and provide goodies for purchasing. Most products for sale related to the convention’s theme.
Attendees lined up at vendors to see what they had in stock.
The expo hall had bounce houses for those in and out of cosplay!
Itasha
The Itasha are cars that are wrapped and/or decorated with Japanese style characters from movies, anime, or video games. Owners generally take their Itasha cars to anime themed conventions to showcase their style and there was no shortage at Animanga. A portion of the hall was set up to display several vehicles stylized with different anime characters.
A Nissan 350Z decorated with a vinyl wrap and stickers.
Gaming Tournaments
In the middle of the expo hall was where the gaming tournament was set up for visitors to battle it out. A schedule was set up for different games each day. Games included in the tournament were Mariokart 8, Street Fighter, and Dragon Ball Z. There were also rows of computers set up for attendees to participate in other games such as Fort Nite. Although not tied to the Gaming Tournament, there a row of old school arcade games was set up.
A row of retro arcade games for attendees to play.
The gaming area hosted different consoles for people to play on.
  Overall
Animanga is a great convention if you’re looking for something casual and more intimate. The entire convention is featured in one expo hall, which allows you to peruse all the vendors and exhibits in one day. There was a lot of less stress in making sure that we saw everything and we felt like there was a lot of emphasis on attendee activities and interaction. At $10 a day, it is a great price point for the value. We’re excited to see this convention grow and look forward to attending Animanga in the future!

And things got huge in our exhibit hall -- literally! Our Colossal Titan head and Goma-chan inflatables are on display, along with some seriously high-end itasha. There's also a Crunchyroll merch booth where you can pick up grab bags, limited-edition con merch, and even your own Hime to take home!
Tomorrow promises to be equally awesome. with panels featuring the people behind Code Vein and Kino's Journey, as well as imdustry panels for Aniplex and (of course) Crunchyroll!
