Submariners of Italian Navy Specialization Course in Drass

As is customary each year, Drass once again had the pleasure of opening its doors to the Italian Navy submariners who are attending the specialization course at the Italian Naval Academy in Livorno. Former submariners from Drass guided the delegation in a tour of the production facilities, introducing one and all to cutting-edge defence crafts and associated technologies that are proving to be gamechangers in the subsea domain in terms of operability, endurance and modularity. “Southern Waters” For all the carnage in the north, it must be remembered that the Battle of The Atlantic was fought from the Barents Sea above Norway, to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa up into the indian Ocean… and all points in between. Today’s attack is such an example. Eighty Years Ago, Today – (Thursday) February 18th, 1943, 56 miles northeast of Salvador, Brazil: The Brazilian freighter “SS Brasiloide” (Photo 1)  is outbound from Maceio, heading south. She is sunk by U-518 (Type IXC) with a pair of torpedoes; the latter breaks her in half. Miraculously, all 50 Crewmen escape and survive the sinking. Meanwhile,  in the Mediterranean, a British torpedo bombers find a perfect target 40 miles northeast of Palermo, Sicily. One attack run later, the 5,891 ton Italian transport “SS Col. Di Lana” (Photo 2)  is on her way to the bottom.  (Casualties Unknown) She isn’t Fascist Italy’s only loss today. West of Sicily, a gale breaks out, sinking the diminutive “RD-24” (Sister Ship, Photo 3), a “Regio Dragamine” class minesweeper of the Regia Marina. The Maiale or Italian human torpedoes, were a secret naval weapon of WWII. Today, we would know them as manned submersibles, those small one, two or more manned underwater propulsion vehicles, that are commonly used in sport diving. Initially developed by Italy and later copied by Britain and other countries, they were designed in secret, to sneak up on and attack ships in an enemy’s harbor. Developed in 1918, by two divers of the Italian Navy-Raffaele Paolucci and Raffaele Rossetti, they rode a primitive manned torpedo into the Austro-Hungarian Naval base at Pola, and sank the Austrian battleship Virbus Unitis and a freighter. Sans breathing gear, they rode in with there heads above water. Both men were discovered and captured, but not before their success. As a result of this first attempt, the First Fleet Assault Vehicles were formed in 1939, by Major Teseo Tesei & Elios Toschi of the Italian Royal Navy. In 1940, Commander Moccagatta of the IRN, reorganized this group, into the Tenth Light Flotilla of Assault Vehicles aka X-MAS. It constructed manned torpedoes and trained navy frogmen. The IRN X-MAS group attempted an attack on Valletta Harbor in July of 1941, which was a complete disaster and which resulted in the death of Major Test. A better design, was the Italian Human Torpedoes, called Maiale-meaning “Pig,” as it was slow to steer. Three feet high and 23 feet long, it was electrically powered by a 2 hp electric motor. It had a crew of two, which rode atop the device and had a max. speed of 4 knots. It carried a detachable 300 kg warhead.

To avoid an arms race between these countries and Britain, still the world's biggest naval power, the US arranged the Washington Naval Conference, the world's first disarmament conference.
