for the prompt ask: as an in-between for the scene where jaeyoung shows sangwoo what the trial would entail and sangwoo trying to give his answer: sangwoo trying to get a hug again without doing it so overtly that he okays the trial period before he is ready. i just cackled at the moment jaeyoung let him go and sangwoo still had his arms up to hug (and the way he slightly snuggled into jaeyoung was too adorable) ^^ (ctl_yuejie in ao3)
I love how much everyone loves that hug scene, it‘s my favourite too and the way Sang Woo just stood there with his arms raised LOL good for Jae Young for not giving up the goods so easily XD
Sneaky
„You get to hold my hand - And kissing, we already did that - and…“
Sang Woo looked down and realized that he had raised his arms, again, after remembering Jae Young‘s words. He hadn‘t felt cold before Jae Young had hugged him, the night temperature had been pleasant, but afterwards… The bereft feeling had been accompanied by a sudden chill wandering through his body and when he had been at home, after he had closed the door behind himself he had touched his right cheek and the memory of Jae Young‘s warmth had lingered there while the loss of it had chilled his skin.
An odd feeling.
He realized later that what he was about to do could be compared to people creating multiple email accounts to get more than one free trial on a subscription service. He disapproved of that trick.
He would never lower himself to such tricks…
The circumstances were also totally different!
Jae Young had surprised him with the examples of what their relationship trial would entail. He hadn‘t been able to fully encompass what he had done and… the hug had been too short. It wasn‘t fair that he would spring that on Sang Woo and then demanded of him to make a decision.
He needed another hug, but he also knew Jae Young long enough already to know that he wouldn‘t hug Sang Woo without a demand.
Sang Woo looked up and stared at Jae Young‘s back. A pile of empty energy drinks was next to Jae Young which was why Sang Woo had moved over to the couch to work. Jae Young was engrossed in his drawings so he most likely hadn‘t realized that he was a slob again and that Sang Woo no longer sat next to him.
He looked back at his screen where the google search ‚how to hug without the other person knowing‘ didn‘t produce satisfying results. Was he the only person in the world who had this kind of problem?
He could wait until Jae Young would fall asleep and just lay down on… he shut down the door on that thought hard and felt warmth wandering from his neck towards his face. Furthermore, that kind of move could result in the dangerous outcome that Jae Young would wake up and then… he closed another door in his head.
While he didn‘t particularly enjoyed them Sang Woo had seen enough K-Drama‘s to know that the protagonist often fell conveniently, right into the arms of the love interest.
Jae Young wasn‘t a love interest… he refused to call him that, but he had to admit that the circumstances were similar. Which was the reason why he stood at the top of three stairs and frowned at Jae Young who was halfway turned away from him on a phone call with Hyeong Taek. It wouldn‘t be unrealistic to stumble down the stairs and into Jae Young‘s arms. A lot of people stumbled.
He frowned at his feet and calculated the cost-benefit-ratio of falling down the stairs on purpose. There was a high chance that he would fall on his face, or would twist his ankle even if Jae Young would catch him.
Jae Young used that moment to turn towards him and winked at him while he tried to talk Hyeong Taek down from a crisis. Sang Woo had no idea why but apparently Ji Hye was involved.
He realized then that he had Jae Young‘s shoulder right in front of him… he pursed his lips and took a tiny step forward. Jae Young was still engaged in the phone call, so he took one step down. Their arms brushed against each other but Jae Young still didn‘t realized how close they were. He turned a little so he was almost facing Jae Young and shuffled forwards. Their shoulders touched and something started to humm inside him. He knew that there was a scientific explanation to why he felt Jae Young‘s body warmth in such an intense way, but he couldn‘t get enough of it. If he would move a bit to the right he would be able to lean his head on Jae Young‘s shoulder—
He felt a gush of breath against his ear.
„Sneaky,“ Jae Young whispered and Sang Woo froze. And then he ran away.

A Nice Night In The Middle Of July - William Miller
Tumblr media
Pairing: William Miller x reader
Requested: Yes.
Prompts: None.
Warnings/notes: Not proofread so sorry in advance for any possible mistakes. First time I’m writing for Will so sorry if it’s a bit OOC, leave a comment and let me know what you think xx
Wordcount: 3377
Summary: Having a barbecue with Will and the boys on a nice summer night.
“This is why I can’t have nice things, you know.” You mumbled against Will’s shoulder, looking down at his hands as he struggled to fix the broken chain of your golden bracelet.
Will only grumbled under his breath, using a small pair of pliers to bend open the small golden rings.
“I’m fixing it, don’t worry your pretty little head.” He insisted, like he had been for the past ten minutes.
But you knew that his patience was wearing thin, pressing a light kiss to his shirt-clad shoulder and gently rubbing his bicep with your hand.
“Will, I love you and you know that.” You said, pressing another kiss to his shoulder. “You’re a good man and a good soldier, but you’re not handy. Not in the slightest.”
He stopped fiddling with the chain, turning his head around to look at you with his eyebrows raised in a playful manner. “What do you mean I’m not handy?” He asked. “I fixed the broken sink, didn’t I?”
“That’s not quite how I remember it.” You chuckled.
“No? How do you remember it?” He put the pliers down, turning his body towards you.
You raised an eyebrow, smiling as he took you into his arms. “You made it worse and Benny was forced to come over in the middle of the night to clean up your mess so that we wouldn’t flood and permanently damage the house. That’s how I remember it.”
He turned quiet for a moment, his fingers that had previously been rubbing small, comforting circles on your waist where his hand had found its place, coming to a halt.
“What is it with you and nitpicking, hm?” He asked after another moment of silence, raising an eyebrow.
“It’s not nitpicking if your brother saved us from going bankrupt all because you were too stubborn to admit you needed help, honey.” You pointed out, chuckling.
He started chuckling too. “Yeah, yeah.” He agreed, before leaning in closer to your face. “You know you love me.”
Smirking, you raised your arms to wrap them around his neck, fiddling with the hair at the nape of his neck. “Whatever makes you sleep at night.” You mumbled, and began leaning in to close the space between you.
Your eyes fluttered close and your lips were just about to brush against each other’s, when the door to the living room flung open with a loud bang, causing the two of you to jump apart in shock.
Your eyes instantly found Ben as he walked outside into the backyard where you were sitting, his arms thrown out and his hips moving around in a ridiculous dance.
“Who’s ready to get their party on? Woo-woo!” He sang and while Will annoyedly rolled his eyes beside you, you laughed at his childish antics, bringing a hand up to your chest in an attempt to calm your racing heart.
“Jesus, Benny!” You exclaimed. “You scared the crap out of me.”
Benny laughed loudly at you, jumping down the steps of the back-porch and heading your way. “Well, I am naturally terrifying.” He answered playfully and you chuckled.
Before any of you could say anything else, Tom appeared, walking out through the same door as Ben had just seconds before.
“I think we’re too old to party.” He commented simply with a small smile playing on his lips as he headed down the steps and in your direction, referring to the first words Ben had spoken when coming outside.
Ben, however, didn’t listen, giving his friend a disappointed look. “Oh, come on, man. You’re never too old for a good ole’ bender.”
Tom raised his eyebrows at his choice of wording and beside you, Will chuckled, pointing a finger to one of the chairs across from you.
“Sit your ass down, Ben.” He said, and his brother flashed him a cheeky grin, doing as told just as Pope appeared on the porch.
The second you turned your heads to look at him, he raised both of his hands into the air to put the four six-packs he was holding on display. “I brought the beer.” He said, stating the obvious and flashing you his pearly whites.
“And I brought the meat.” Tom joined in, coming up to the table and dumping the paper bag he had brought with him onto the wooden table, bringing said meat out and slapping the pieces onto the bag “This is the real deal, I’m telling you.”
Just the sight of the raw meat got you excited and you couldn’t wait until it was all cooked and ready to eat, not having eaten since lunch time.
Before any of you could comment on the good-quality meat, however, Catfish was jogging down the steps of the porch too, waving his hands around.
“And I brought my good company. Thank you, Frankie!” He cheered himself on, causing you to chuckle at the sarcastic tone in his voice.
“Thank you, Frankie.” You told him sincerely, your smile widening as he came up to your side and planted a friendly kiss on your cheek.
Once him and Pope had sat down next to Ben, they wasted no time in digging into the carton packages of beer.
Pope snapped the metal cap off a bottle and stretched it out for you to take and you accepted it without looking at him, keeping your gaze on Tom as he moved to the grill standing off to the side. “We got the grill all warmed up for you, Tom.”
Tom simply nodded his head, flipping the lid open and grabbing the metal kitchen utensils laying on the wooden bord next to the grill to stir the coals around.
While he busied himself with the grill, too engrossed in the task at hand to even spare you another glance, Ben leaned forward in his seat, folding his hands in front of him on the table.
“What have you got there, brother dearest?” He asked, and you moved your gaze to Will, seeing that he was now giving fixing the bracelet another attempt.
You hadn’t even noticed him going back to it, but now that he had, you could only roll your eyes. “My bracelet. He broke it.”
“On accident.” Will quickly filled in, without looking up from the golden piece of jewelry.
“How did you manage that?” Ben chuckled and, again, you rolled your eyes.
“He was fiddling with it, even though I told him not too, and as usual, he was too rough.”
A mischievous grin crept up the youngest Miller’s as he watched you, his hand slowly raising the bottle of bear to his lips. “Really?” He asked when he lowered it again after taking a sip, raising his eyebrows. “Because Will here tells me you like it rough.”
Pope and Catfish both choked on their beers at his words and Tom was obviously trying to cover his laughter up with coughs over by the grill.
Your eyes opened wide for a moment, your mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, but then it turned into a glare, your head whipping around to face your boyfriend and your hand shooting out to slap his chest. “Will!”
Will’s glare was already set on his younger brother when you turned to look at him, his foot kicking him underneath the table, causing his younger brother to quickly raise his hands in surrender.
“Kidding, kidding.” He said, but your glare didn’t leave Will, your arms crossing over your chest and a questioning eyebrow shooting up.
Before anyone could say anything else on the matter, however, Ben reached his hand out for the bracelet and the pliers in his older brother’s hands, nodding his head. “Let me have a look.”
Will turned to look at him, shaking his head. “I got it.” He insisted and you snorted, putting your hand on his.
“No, you don’t. Time to swallow your pride.” You said, trying to pry the pliers out of his fingers. “Give it to him, baby.”
He sighed, but did as told, handing the pliers and the bracelet to his brother, who wasted no time in starting to look it over.
While he busied himself with that, Will wrapped an arm around your waist and pulled you closer, pressing a kiss to your arm. “Come here, you.” He said, and you did as told, moving into his side and settling comfortably under his arm.
“So, how’s your day been, guys?” You asked then, looking between all of them.
All of them shrugged, and Frankie leaned back into his seat, blowing a raspberry and raising his eyebrows. “Well, no one died.” He replied in a causal manner, causing you to raise an eyebrow.
“Those are your standards?” You asked, but when only getting an amused smirk in return, you shook your head in a chuckle. “I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised at this point.”
They hummed in agreement and you turned to Tom, raising your bottle of beer to your lips and taking a sip before asking. “How’s Tess, Tom?”
Without looking away from the grill, where he had now put the first round of meat onto the metal grid, he answered. “Shes good. Very good, actually. She won the spelling bee yesterday.”
“You should’ve seen her. It was impressive.” Benny wasted no time in pitching in from across you, causing you all to turn to him.
You raised an eyebrow, taking another sip of your beer and snuggling further into Will’s side. “What were you doing at Tom’s daughter’s spelling bee competition?” You asked, and Frankie chuckled, raising his eyebrows at you.
“Oh, you haven’t heard?” He asked, amusement evident in his voice. “He’s trying to nail her English teacher.”
“And I’m succeeding.” Ben instantly answered, pointing the pliers at his friend. “And not only with her. Teachers are just crazy for me, man. I think they’ve got a thing for soldiers or something. Or maybe it’s just because I’m smoother than the cream cheese on a bagel.”
Tom scoffed from where he stood, and you did the same, shaking your head. “Please, you’ve got about as much charm as a dead slug.”
At the sound of your words, he turned towards you, pointing the pliers at you instead. “Watch it, or maybe I’ll keep the bracelet for myself.”
You leaned forward at that, eyes wide with expectation. “Did you fix it?”
Placing his hand over his heart, he gave you a feign hurt look. “You doubted me? I’m wounded.” He said and you rolled your eyes, holding your hand out.
Chuckling, he dropped the bracelet in your hand and you smiled to see that the chain was now whole again. “That was quick.” You pointed out, ignoring the way Will scoffed from beside you and smiling at his brother. “Thank you, Benny.”
“Don’t mention it.” He raised his beer to you and smiled, before bringing the bottle to his lips.
You turned to Will, looking up at him and holding the bracelet up. “Help me put it back on?” You asked and he grumbled under his breath, but nonetheless took it from you and undid the clasp.
You held your wrist up for him and he put the bracelet on without any trouble whatsoever. You moved to bring your hand back down but he caught your wrist, holding your eyes as he moved your hand up to his lips and pressed a kiss to your knuckles.
A smile instantly rose to your face but before either of you could say anything, the egg clock went off inside the house, causing all of you to stop what you were doing to look at the porch door.
You smacked your lips. “Looks like the potatoes are done in the oven.” You told them, and went to stand up.
But Pope quickly got to his feet, holding a hand out to stop you and flashing you a soft smile. “I’ll get them, you sit down.” He said, and you returned the smile, nodding your head and sinking back down next to Will.
Next to stand up was Ben, pushing his chair back and putting his now empty bottle down on the table.
“I’m gonna go raid your liquor cabinet.” He said, and beside him, Frankie put out a cigarette that you had barely even noticed him light in the first place, standing up too.
“I could go for some whiskey.” He agreed, the three of them heading toward the porch.
You looked after them until they had all disappeared into the living room, heaving a sigh when you could no longer see them. “Oh, well… I guess it’s just us three th- Where are you going?” You cut yourself off when you turned to look at Tom, seeing that he was now also moving to leave.
“You didn’t bring the limes.” He told you simply, wiping his hands on a towel to rid them of the marinade that the meat was covered in.
“Oh, shoot.” You groaned, giving him an apologetic look. “I totally forgot. They’re in the fridge.”
He smiled at you, throwing the towel at the table and nodding.  “Got it, be right back.” He said, stopping only to point a finger at you, giving you a pointed look. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
You opened your mouth to reply but before you could get a word out, you felt a sharp pinch at your butt, a surprised yelp leaving your lips instead.
“No promises.” Will said from beside you, causing you to turn around to look at him, catching him trying to hide his pleased smirk behind his beer.
You rolled your eyes at his cheeky antics and Tom only chuckled, before heading for the porch and leaving the two of you alone.
You watched the side of Will’s face closely as he took another sip of his beer, a hum leaving his lips before he leaned forward to put the bottle on the table in order to give you his full, undivided attention.
When he turned to face you with a small smirk playing on his lips, your face instantly lit up in a big smile, said smile widening even further when he leaned his face into your neck, his beard tickling your skin.
He started planting feather-light kisses along your neck, out on your jaw all the way to your chin.
“Hey, there.” He mumbled when his face was right in front of yours, and you smiled, looking down at his lips.
“Hi, yourself.” You mumbled, bringing your hands up to his neck, stroking the back of his head slowly.
He analyzed your face, the corners of his lips tugging upwards.
“You’ve got...” He trailed off, and you followed his every move with your eyes as he brought a hand up to your face, the rough pads of his fingers brushing over your skin. “An eyelash.” He finished, bringing his thumb up in front of you, a single, black eyelash now resting on the pad.
You chuckled, blowing the lash off, before reaching up with your free hand to take his in yours.  “Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” He replied, taking you back under his arm and smirking playfully at you. “So, you come here often?”
You snorted, raising an eyebrow at him. “Well, considering that I live here, yeah.” You replied, and this time it was his turn to snort.
“Cute.” He said, and kissed you.
You hummed into the kiss, using your hand at his neck to pull him closer. “Thanks.” You mumbled against his lips. “I murdered a care bear and ate its heart to get this adorable.”
At the sound of your words, Will had to pull away from you with a laugh. “Wow.” He drawled lowly, raising his eyebrows.  “I wasn’t expecting that.”
“Neither was the care bear.” You gave him a feign evil look, before breaking into a wide grin.
He chuckled at your antics, shaking his head. “You’re evil.”
“You love it.” You mumbled, letting go of his hand to bring it to his neck where your other one was already at, pulling him in for another kiss.
“That I do.” He mumbled against your lips, and you simply smiled, pulling him closer.
The sweet moment of passion was cut short, however, when the sound of a can opening reached your ears, the two of you opening your eyes and slowly turning your faces around to the side, your lips only coming apart when you spotted Benny standing at the end of the porch with a grin on his face.
You brought your hand up to wipe your lips, narrowing your eyes at your boyfriend’s brother. “We were having a moment.” You said, eyes only narrowing further when he loudly slurped the can.
“And I’m having a beer.” He deadpanned, still grinning like an idiot as he walked to where you were sitting at the table.
“I thought you were going to go get the whiskey.” You raised your eyebrow, and he wasted no time in raising the bottle you hadn’t noticed until then.
“I did, but that’s for later.” He replied, sinking down into his old chair just as the others returned outside, talking loudly.
While Pope and Frankie sat back down, Tom busied himself with cutting up the limes at a cutting board he had brought with him outside, all while the six of you engaged in conversation about everything between heaven and earth, reminiscing in old memories.
The food was served close to an hour later and it was even better than you’d imagined it would be, tasting like heaven when you hadn’t eaten anything else for so many hours.
The clock was well past midnight by the time you finished, but the conversations never stopped, drunken laughter filling your entire backyard.
The topic at hand was currently about the time Ben had stolen his neighbor and crush’s underwear in high school and thrown them up in the highest tree in the neighborhood for all to see, something he was still to this day very proud of, when you suddenly felt Will’s face nuzzling into the crook between your neck and shoulder.
His nose grazed over your neck, moving the hair out of the way, so that he could press a kiss to the skin.
“I love you.” His gruff voice came right by your ear a second later, and you smiled, closing your eyes as he hugged you closer.
“I love you too, baby.” You mumbled, your smiled widening when he pressed another kiss to your skin, this time right at the corner of your lips.
“Hey, no more of that! You can bone each other later, preferably when we’re not here!” Ben’s voice yelled out, and before you got the time to react, you were hit in the face with a piece of lime peel.
You jumped, turning to glare at Ben who was smiling drunkenly at you, looking awfully pleased with himself.
“You’re the worst.” You told him, and he only stuck his tongue out at you, causing all of the others to fall into a fit of laughter.
Will started laughing too, his chest rumbling behind your back, the sound automatically causing the glare to fall from your face and be replaced by a smile.
You turned back to him, bringing your hands up to grab his face, causing his eyes to flicker up to yours.
He raised a questioning eyebrow at you and you smiled, bringing him closer.
“But you.” You mumbled, swiping your thumbs over his cheeks anf pausing to peck his lips, pressing your forehead against his once you came back apart. “Are the best.”
He smiled, leaning in to press his lips against yours in another kiss, but was cut short by another lime peel being thrown at your heads, followed by a second, a third and a fourth, forcing the two of you to come back apart to cover your heads as the guys continued to torment you until they were all out of peels.
It was a beautiful night in the middle of July and you were together, drinking, eating, laughing, talking and having a good time with your closest friends, wrapped up in the arms of the love of your life. Everything was perfect, and nothing could bring you down.

A/N: This may be the fastest I have ever written a fic but it’s for a good cause!! One of my good friends has her birthday today, so I’d like you all, along with this fic, to wish her a happy birthday!!! Babie, I hope this makes you smile~
Tumblr media
You were half lying- half sitting on your bed, music coming from your phone that was sitting on your nightstand. Laid on your lap was your tablet, in which you were doodling little nothings, trying to blow off some steam after a long day.
Your music momentarily stopped to inform you that you had received a message and you groaned. You contemplated not checking your phone at all, but you were expecting your boyfriend to stop by any minute. You shuffled on the bed, reaching to get your phone on your hands.
Without surprise, the very first notification belongs to your boyfriend.
   ☀️ woo
I’ll be there in like 10 seconds
Like clockwork, you heard a knock coming from the front door of your apartment. A low groan escaped from you once again as you pulled yourself out of bed and went to answer the door. Opening it revealed your boyfriend Sunwoo, in all his glory, black sweatpants and grey oversized hoodie, red hair in shambles.
His smile made its way to your heart, as your own lips turned upwards.
“When I said text me before you get here, I meant text me once you leave your house, not 5 seconds before barging into mine” you whined at him as he walked in and pulled you in a hug.
“It was 10 seconds actually. In my defense, I knew I was going to be late so I didn’t want to get scolded” he said with a chuckle, ruffling your hair.
“Fuck you” you teased, pushing him further in your small apartment.
Sunwoo plopped down on your couch, getting comfortable in his seat as you went in the kitchen to get a glass of water. Once back in the living room, he looked up from his phone to you, beaming at you as you sat yourself next to him.
“What’s on the agenda today?” he asked in a low voice, helping with the overall silence of your apartment.
“Nothing really, I just wanted to see you” you confessed, snuggling up at him.
  “So, Mario Kart?” he offered.
“You really wanna get your ass kicked this early on?” you teased him.
“Ha! You wish! Loser buys pizza?” he asked again.
“Sure thing, loser” you continued your teasing.
After a few rounds of foul play from both of you, from planting kisses on the other’s lips to throwing their controllers away, you admitted defeat, leaving Sunwoo to run back and forth in front of your TV in a victory lap.
Sitting square on top of you, he crashed you with his weight as you laughed, screaming at him to get off. He paid no mind to your words, proceeding to shower you with kisses. You stopped struggling, cupping his face with your hand as your lips found his.
The kiss was soft and sweet, as you tasted your boyfriend’s favourite lip balm. Breaking away from the kiss, you said
  “Sunwoo, I seriously cannot breathe”
“Oh, quit being such a baby” he told you.
Nevertheless, he flipped your position, with you now laying on top of his chest. You kissed him again, running your hand through his hair and playing with it.
“Y/N~. Pizza~” he sang and you couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Fernando’s? The usual?” You asked as you opened the delivery app on your phone.
Sunwoo nodded, getting up and stretching a bit.
“Where’s the list? We should pick a movie” he asked.
The list was a piece of paper on which both of you wrote down movies you wanted the other to see. Sometimes, there would be movies that you both were dying to see, others it would be old classic black and white movies you adored, or gangster movies Sunwoo had grown to love.
“Oh, it’s on my bedside table. Somewhere under the lamp I think.” You said, waving your hand to the general direction of your room.
He nodded, striding towards your room as you placed your order. When he came back, he had two things in his hands.
“What’s this?” he asked and you looked closely at the items he was holding.
One was definitely the list, the piece of paper neatly folded so many times it was close to tearing. On his other hand, he held the neon green case of your retainers.
Previously this week, you had booked yourself your annual appointment to the orthodontist. Even years after removing your braces, you were still hung up on the habit of taking very good care of your teeth’s health. So when your orthodontist announced that you had to wear your retainer again you were disappointed. You thought you had been doing your best, but it felt like you were starting all over again.
A blush crept up on your cheeks as Sunwoo stood before you, one hand on his hip, the other holding your retainer case, waiting for an answer.
“That’s my retainer case” you said, trying to sound nonchalant.
“I thought you were all done with that stuff. Hell, your teeth should be healthy as hell with the amount of floss you use” he said, sitting down.
“Well it turns out all that floss started moving my teeth a bit. It’s no big deal. I’ll just wear the retainer for a while and it’ll be all good” you answered, trying to show that the conversation was clearly over.
“Do you have a lisp when you wear it? I had the worst time, I could barely speak” he told you.
“Yeah I do. But luckily, I’ll only wear it at night, so it won’t be a problem” you said.
“Wear it now! I wanna hear it!” he said, shoving the case on your hands.
“Sunwoo no-” you tried to say, but he pulled the puppy dog eyes immediately.
“Please, please, please, just this once, I just want to hear you and I’ll stop I promise! I won’t even take a video of it I just want to hear your cute lisp please” he begged and you caved in.
Without an answer, you just shook your head, trying desperately to fight the smile that was creeping up to your face as you pulled the retainer on.
“What do you want me to thay?” you asked, flinching when you said ‘say’ wrong.
Sunwoo was smiling so big, you thought his face would fall off. He got comfortable on the other end of the couch, hugging a pillow tightly as he thought about it. Ultimately, he gave you several phrases with lots of s’s in them. Every time you repeated a phrase, he’d drop his head on the pillow, half screaming and half laughing, then screaming at your face how cute you were before giving you another sentence.
At first, you felt really self-conscious, even hating the sound of your voice. As Sunwoo started falling apart in front of you, showering you with praise and love, you begun feeling better. You didn’t enjoy the experience per se, but you found your boyfriend just as cute as he found you, so you felt better.
“Okay, that’s enough” you said after a while, getting up and taking off your retainer.
You left a pouting Sunwoo in the living room as you put the retainer back in its case and placed it on top of your nightstand. With just the right timing, the doorbell rung, announcing the arrival of the pizzas. You answered the door and paid the delivery man as Sunwoo chanted “FOOD, FOOD, FOOD” from the other room.
You shook your head as you set the pizzas down, discovering that Sunwoo had already picked the movie. As you settled down, you smiled at the movie choice being one of Disney’s newest releases you had been dying to watch. Too invested in the movie, it wasn’t until after that you realized just how happy Sunwoo made you.
Yes, he pushed your buttons, even making you enraged sometimes. But he also knew when enough was enough and every simple way to make you feel happy and at ease.
As you laid in your bed that night, your mind filled with thoughts of your boyfriend, you decided to send him a somewhat different goodnight text.
  You
Hey. I just… Thank you for today? I really missed spending down time with you. And thank you for the retainer thing. I felt kinda iffy about telling you. You have such a magical way of making my mind stop racing and I couldn’t thank you enough.
Bottom line is, I love you, you idiot.
 ☀️ woo
I love you too. It helps that I can read you like an open book, you know. You ain’t sly girl.
Now go to sleep. You have classes tomorrow.
 You
Don’t tell me what to do, Kim.
    ☀️ woo
Can’t you just let me win for once? I’m trying so hard to be cute over here. How am I supposed to post them “texts like these🥰” screenshots when you keep jumping down my throat?
You Where’s the fun in that? Plus, you wouldn’t have it any other way. So shut up. And go to sleep. You have classes tomorrow.
    ☀️ woo
I see what you did there.
Goodnight, Y/N~

Der Mond ist Aufgegangen
Word Count: 679
Pairing: Dukexiety
Characters: Remus and Virgil
Rating: G
Smitten Virgil? ✅ German Speaking Virgil? ✅ Calm Remus? ✅ Mild gore mention? ✅ Fluff ✅
Inspired by this post by @zombie-teeth
It was a quiet night, and for the first time in forever, Remus had worn himself out completely. Roman was able to get him to shower and wear some deodorant that wasn't pickled-poo scented. Remus was plain exhausted, and that meant he would cling to whoever he could get his hands on, without his tentacles causing mischief.
Virgil hummed softly as he scrolled through Tumblr under the covers. After the chaos and clean up he was tired, but it was worth it to see Remus so happy and alive.
"Scare Bear?" a timid voice greeted him when Remus rose up.
"Hey, Smelly Roger," Virgil hummed and sat up, "is something wrong?"
"No, I just wanted to cuddle with my Screamy Baby." Remus pouted and shuffled his feet. It was rare for Remus to pull out the Beanie Baby pun, only when he was really in need of a loving cuddle.
"I hope you don't mind the spider eggs. They could hatch at any second." Virgil teased and waved him over. Remus beamed and scurried over to him. He crawled under the covers and pulled Virgil down to cling to him and use his chest as a pillow.
"You're warm." Remus yawned and snuggled into him. Virgil smiled and ran a hand down his shoulder.
"Like a fresh corpse?"
"No!" Remus whined and scrunched up his nose, "Like a Sasquatch, but smaller and less stinky!" he giggled and continued tiredly, "It's okay, you're cuddle sized and you smell nice, like cider and sheet music."
"You know, when you take away the trash, you don't smell so bad yourself." Virgil shrugged and ran his fingers through the Duke's hair. It was true, he had a certain natural musk that reminded Virgil of a campfire on the beach. It was comforting.
"Yeah? Then maybe I should bathe with soap more often." the tired side mumbled, "I want my boyfriend sniffing me like a piece of meat."
"I would say you don't have to, but your hair is really soft when it's not matted with grease. It feels nice."
"Your fingers feel nice. Pet me til I fall asleep?" Remus said softly, already drifting off.
"Yeah, I can do that." Virgil hummed softly. Remus smiled and placed a kiss over his heart.
"Yay! I love you the mostest, Vee. No love can match."
"That's gonna be a problem," Virge chuckled, "Because I love you more." He was only mildly surprised when all he got in response was soft snoring.
"I win this round, Herzog." he mused as he continued to stroke that wild mane. The soft brown locks under his fingers were so soft they put the prince's to shame. The way they fell around that sleeping face, framing it so perfectly, brought a light blush to his cheeks.
Remus was absolutely gorgeous and adorable like this, at peace and content to cling to him. Virgil couldn't find anything bitter to say about the situation, except that he didn't deserve to be so lucky. Remus was so brilliant, whimsical, fun, free—everything Virgil believed he wasn't. Remus could have chosen to go after Logan or Deceit with their snark and intelligence. He could have tried to woo Patton with honesty and puns. But Remus wanted him and Virgil wasn't going to fight it.
He watched the rise and fall of Remus' chest and focused on the sound of his breathing. The tiny whimpers that escaped his lips and the way he clung to Virgil even tighter, made the emo melt. He could never be any less grateful that he was with this fallen angel. He draped his arm around Remus and quietly sang a lullaby:
... Wir stolze Menschenkinder Sind eitel arme Sünder, Und wissen gar nicht viel Wir spinnen Luftgespinste, Und suchen viele Künste, Und kommen weiter von dem Ziel ...
Remus calmed down, still holding onto Virgil as if he would never let go. No matter how chaotic and muddled their daily lives were, no matter how many disagreements arose, Virgil would never let Remus go either—not the most beautiful part of his existence.

Tumblr media
Halle and Liam sat in front of one of the large pine trees outside of Applewood Manor.  Their large grins trained on the camera in front of them.
“Wishing a Merry Christmas…” Liam started.
“...And Happy Holidays to you and yours.” Halle added, hoping the huskiness to her voice brought warmth and not exhaustion.
“And an extra happy holiday to you.” Liam cooed to the youngest Rhys, two-year-old Asher, Ash for short, who nuzzled against his mother.  The young boy smiled and clasped his father’s nose in his gloved hands.
Five-year-olds Kalilah and Zuri sat in front of them and waved to the camera. While Zuri continued to wave, Kalilah reached down into the snow and threw a snowball at her brother and father.  Zuri quickly retaliated and soon the peaceful moment descended into chaos.  Lilah had Zuri pinned within seconds.  Ash patted snow on his sister’s back leaving Halle and Liam to have a battle of their own.
Halle smashed a snowball on her husband’s face.
“Is that how you want to play, my love?”
She didn’t finish her nod before Liam tackled her in the snow.
“Cut,” An exasperated Madeleine shouted behind the camera crew.  “So much for a regal but festive address.” She threw her hands up in the air.
Halle pulled Lilah off of her brother while Liam held Ash. They walked over to where Madeleine was with the camera crew.
“Think we have it now?”
“No, Your Majesty, we do not. We should do one more take.”
Zuri groaned.
Halle looked down at her children.  Lilah looked about ready to cry.  Zuri had his arms across his chest.  They were more than done.  Ash was also over it, getting antsy in his father’s arms.
“I don’t think the twins have another take in them and Ash is about ready for a nap.”
“I still think…”
“Maybe the snow fight is a good thing,” St. James interjected.  “It makes them seem down to earth.”
“They are not down to earth, they are the Royal Family of Cordonia.  This isn’t some cutesy e-card we are making for Grandma.”
Ash became even fussier, fighting his father’s embrace, his small limbs flailing in every direction.  “I say that we go with this one.  With the snowball fight.” Liam giving his final word while trying to calm the toddler.
“Of course, Your Majesty,” Madeleine says with a fake grin, though the tightness in her jaw said otherwise.  She walked away with a determined stride, calling over her shoulder as she went.  “Make sure that the footage gets to the editor ASAP.  I want this on every television station by primetime and on Instagram before tea-time.”
“I am already on it.” St. James hollered back.
Now Drake was playing the clip of Liam getting smashed with a snowball on his phone during New Years Eve gathering that Halle and Liam were hosting at the Valtoria Estate.
“You don’t get to see that every day,” Drake pointed out.  “The Sovereign Ruler of Cordonia getting pummelled with snow.”
“I seem to recall you being buried in snow by your wife and son on Instagram. I think it even had the caption hashtag ‘snow daddy’” Liam countered.
“But I am not the king.”
“Dieu merci pour ça,” Kiara said as she joined the two men. “The last thing we need is a grumpy monarch who would spend an alarming amount of the GDP on whiskey.”
“I am not a grump.”
His best friend raised his eyebrow and his wife side-eyed him.
“I am not!” Drake defended.  “I like fun.  Woo. Fun. Good times for all.”
“But you are my dear, and I love you anyway,” Kiara added with a kiss on Drake’s cheek.
“You’ve got to now.  You’re stuck with me.” Drake kissed her on the lips.
“Guess I am... Snow Daddy.”
“Truer words have never been spoken.”
Zuri ran up to his father, his footie pajamas slipping on the hardwood floors. “Can we do sock slides with Uncle Maxwell?”
Henri, Drake and Kiara’s son followed closely behind. “Yeah, can we?”
“What did your mother say?”
“Ask your father.”
“Did she now?  Well, I guess I do not see the immediate harm in this.” Liam reasoned.
“They would be with an adult,” Kiara added.
“You are calling Maxwell an adult?”
Henri held onto his father’s leg.  Drake saw his own eyes peer back at him as he pouted his mother’s lips.
“Please,” the child begged with a lip quiver.
Drake sighed, “Fine.”
“Yes!” Henri cheered, his pout vanishing.
“Sock slide contest with Uncle Maxwell!”
“He has all the best tricks.”
Henri and Zuri ran off in search of their fun uncle, leaving the adults to themselves.
A waiter walked by with a tray of drinks.  Liam and Drake picked up tumblers of scotch while Kiara’s had non-alcoholic Lythikos eggnog. She and Drake were expecting their second child, so that meant no wine for her.  This led to a discussion about adjusting from one child to two.  Liam did not have much to offer in that discussion since he and Halle went from zero to two in one go.
Halle had Ash for most of the night.  He didn’t do well with spending long periods of time with the nanny or with lots of new people in the house.  With all of the strangers in the house, Ash was especially clingy.  Any time she would put the child down to have him play with the other children, he would throw a tantrum that could only be calmed by a mother’s love.  Eventually, the stimulation became too much and Ash tired himself out.  Now Halle was free to actually enjoy the party that she planned.
Heading towards the great hall where everyone was, she was intercepted by Bastien.
“Your Majesty, we have a situation in the kitchen.”
“Liam!”
Bastien held his hands up.  “No-no, it’s not your husband, it’s your son.”
“What happened.”
“We can walk and talk.”
Halle entered her kitchen to find Zuri and Henri passed out by an half-eaten chocolate cake.
“Zuri!”
“Mamma?” The boy sleepily responded.
“How did you get here?”
“Well we were feeling sleepy and Uncle Maxwell said that if we eat a lot of sugar we can stay awake until midnight.”
“Like the grown-ups,” Henri added.
“Well, how grown up do the two of you feel?”
Zuri groaned, “Well being a grown-up means being tired.”
“My tummy hurts.”
“I bet it does.”
Halle wiped the chocolate frosting smeared on the boys' faces, then put the chocolate cake in the fridge.  While wiping down the counter, she saw a sight that made her stop in her tracks.  Her eyes scanned the liquor cabinet and landed on a full bottle of her favorite, Hennessy Pure White.  Halle smiled.  I am gonna make my way back to you, beloved, she thought to herself.
Halle motioned for Bastien to grab Henri while she grabbed Zuri.  In Zuri’s room, she changed both of them out of their cake soiled pajamas and into clean ones and put them to bed.  She sent Kiara a text letting her know where her son was.  As soon as both boys were sound asleep in their beds, Halle beelined back to the kitchen.  Once there, she found the Hennessy Pure White that was flirting with her earlier.
“Come to Mama!”
Halle made herself a quick, but potent island punch and rejoined the party upstairs, drink in hand.
Later on that night a little closer to midnight, Liam was looking for his wife to have a moment alone but had not seen her since she made him hold Asher for a quick bathroom break.  There was a tug on his pant leg.  He looked down to see Lilah trying to get his attention.
“Ready for bed?” He asked picking her up.
She slowly shook her head.  “No. I will make it to midnight like the grown-ups.”
“You do not have to.  If you feel tired, I can tuck you in.  I am sure Zuri is already asleep.”
“I’m okay, papa,” she said before stifling a yawn.
“Let’s go find mamma though.”
“Mamma is over there.”
The room fell quiet as Liam turned his head.  Hana was in front of the baby grand piano while Halle laid atop it.  Halle perked up when Hana started to play the opening bars to a song.  Liam was familiar with the melody, but couldn’t grasp the words or the name.  Then he heard it.
“I believe the children are our future…”
Lilah buried her head in the crook of her father’s neck.
“No, mama, no,” she whined covering her ears.
“Teach them well and let them lead the way.  Show them all the beauty they possess insiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide.”
Hana giggled as Halle drew out that last note but continued her flawless playing.
“Give them a sense of pride….”
“You have lost all of yours, Halle,” Drake mumbled to himself.  “Question is which bottle of Hennessey took it.”
Kiara smacked her husband hard on the chest.  He responded with a shrug and finished off the finger of scotch in his glass. Liam moved towards the front of the room holding their daughter, not only to get a better view of the show but to be ready to intervene if things went downhill.
Halle slid off the piano and approached her husband and daughter, continuing to sing.
“Let the children's laaaaaaaaughter remind us how we used to beeeeeeee.”
She booped Lilah on the nose.  Lilah snuggled into her father more.
“Every–”
“Everybody's searching for a hero,” Maxwell sang joining the Queen.
Halle strode to his side and whispered, My time to shine.
Maxwell whispered back, Sharing is caring.
“People need someone to look up to, I never found anyone who fulfilled my neeeeeeeeeds,” He continued.  “A lonely place to be, and so I learned to depend on meeee.”
Not being one to be outdone or overtaken, Halle cut back in, raising her voice. “I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows.”
Maxwell roared back, “If I fail, if I succeeeeeeeeed, at least I'll live as I believeeeee.”
“No matter what they take from me, they can't take away my dignityyyyyyy!” Halle sang back, dramatically pointing to her chest.
“The greaaaaaaaatesssssst love of allllllllll–” Maxwell sang.
Halle turned to face him, “Is happening to meeeee!”
Maxwell stepped closer, “I found the greatest love of all, inside of me”
“THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL–”
“IS EASY TO ACHIEVE!”
They both stopped for a moment.  Hana stopped playing once she saw that they went silent.  They stared at each other.  Maxwell was red in the face.  Halle had developed some sweat along her hairline.  When the moment could not get any tenser, they broke down and started laughing.
“Learning to love yourself,” they sang in unison,  “it is the greatest love of all.”
Everyone in the room applauded the impromptu performance.
Maxwell and Halle embraced.  Halle held him close and whispered, we will talk about you leaving my son alone with a sheet cake later.  Maxwell gulped and smiled nervously while everyone applauded.  Hana stood from behind the piano and joined the two of them.  They linked hands and took a final bow.
Halle joined Liam and Lilah.  She gave her daughter a kiss on the forehead as she continued to rest on her father’s shoulder.
“You wanted to drop the mic and say ‘Sexual Chocolate’ so bad, didn’t you?” Liam whispered.
She let out a disappointed sigh, “No need to rub it in.” He rubbed her back soothing her mild disappointment.
“Oh my God! It’s almost midnight!” Savannah shouted from across the room.
Everyone counted down the final moments of the year.  When the clock struck midnight, the first minute of the new year was filled with the sound of applause, champagne poppers, party horns.  Couples kissed.  Bottles of champagne were opened with loud pops and served to everyone.
Lilah perked up a little during the commotion but quickly returned to sleeping on Liam’s shoulder.  He and Halle brought her to bed before returning to their guests.
The party went on for a little while longer after that and when it was finally over, Liam and Halle were finally alone in the Royal Chambers.  They were in their bed, still awake, despite the long party.  Liam pressed his forehead against Halle’s.
“Happy new year, my love.”
“Happy new year, my king.”
His hand cupped her face as he dipped down to kiss her.  She pressed herself closer to him returning it.
“We didn’t sneak off during this party to have any time to ourselves,” Halle commented.
“We are alone now.”
“We are.”
Liam yawned, “Want to raincheck in the morning.”
Halle nodded, “Yeah.”
With that, they began the new year the way they planned to spend the rest of their lives, together, in each other’s arms.

where to begin: epilogue
one year later. “Hye-Rim!” Young-Do dove for the crawling baby as she tried to escape into Rachel’s garden. He looked around for the attendants and frowned when he got all the way back to the nursery without seeing a single one. Hyo-Shin was out of the city and Rachel was locked in meetings trying to convince old men with ancient attitudes that women were capable of doing difficult things.
He volunteered to spend the afternoon with Hye-Rim and the other children to give the ministers space and not undermine Rachel. Hye-Rim cackled at him happily as she grabbed onto his nose and hair.
At six months she was more active than any baby had a right to be.
Young-Do spent the next hour trying to keep Hye-Rim inside the nursery before he enlisted the help of Eun-Sang. “Where are the rest of the children?”
“Everyone but Eun-Hee and Joo-Young are with the tutors. Bo-Na took the littles on a field trip so your guess is as good as mine when they will get back. I think Hye-Rim was supposed to be napping until Rachel finished her meeting.”
“She’s not napping,” he muttered as Hye-Rim made a grab for his crown. He sighed and took out the pin holding it in place. Once he checked to make sure she couldn’t stab herself with it, Young-Do let her play with it.
Young-Do did his best to let her wear herself out before she fell asleep snuggled in his shoulder. It was several hours later when Rachel found them eating dinner together in her rooms. She smiled at them easily as Hye-Rim immediately perked up and held out her hands to Rachel.
Rachel picked her up and kissed him softly. “I thought you had a dinner with Minister Park.”
“I canceled it. He wants to complain that I won’t let him visit his daughter. How did it go?”
“Chae-Mi did flawlessly. She’s incredibly articulate and poised. You would’ve been proud of her. There are a few advantages to the education her family gave her. What happened to your hair?”
“Hye-Rim.” At her name, the little girl gave her mother the most innocent of expressions before curling up against Rachel’s shoulder. “How are you feeling. I want you to take it easy. It’s only been six months.”
“I miss Hyo-Shin,” she admitted. “I miss making love to you. And when I’m away from Hye-Rim, I miss her. I spoke with Hyun-Joo today. She wants me to wait a few more weeks.”
“You lost a lot of blood,” he reminded her. “It’s okay.”
“For you. You’ve got two other women and a man.”
“And yet, all I want to do is hold you,” he teased and kissed her gently. “Relax tonight. I’ll play interference.”
two years later. Rachel winced at the piercing scream coming out of the nursery before she rushed to investigate. It was supposed to be nap time, or at the very least, quiet time, but every day this week it felt like the children were brawling with each other.
Eun-Sang met her at the entrance just as Hye-Rim and Jung-Woo let out a loud scream at each other. Eun-Hee tried to hold Jung-Woo back from taking a swing at Hye-Rim, who stood definitely, all twenty-three months of her, proud with scissors in her hands.
Jung-Woo’s hair was in tatters.
“Justice!” Hye-Rim shouted with more anger than Rachel had ever seen. “No pee!”
“What is going on?” Eun-Sang demanded. Jung-Woo stopped fighting Eun-Hee and pointed his finger at Hye-Rim.
“She cut my hair while I was sleeping!”
“Why?” Rachel directed her question at her daughter. Hye-Rim went over to her bed and grabbed her pillow. She brought it to Rachel and she winced. While the pillow was not wet, it did smell like urine. She handed it to Eun-Sang.
“Did you pee on Hye-Rim’s pillow?”
Jung-Woo looked down at the ground. “She cut my hair!”
“That isn’t what I asked. You peed on Joo-Young’s bed last week and she almost broke your nose. Why are you tormenting your sisters? Do I need to get Appa?”
“No,” Jung-Woo said quickly just as Hye-Rim shouted, “King Appa! King Appa! JUSTICE.”
“She isn’t my sister! Her father is Lord Lee Hyo-Shin! She isn’t a princess.”
Hye-Rim started growling and brandishing the scissors. Jung-Woo flinched away from her just as Rachel took them out of her hands. Eun-Sang did not look happy with her son. “Joo-Young is a princess and you still peed on her bed.”
Rachel decided her daughter needed a lesson, too. “Hye-Rim will apologize but--”
“NO SORRY!”
“What is going on?” Young-Do entered before he could be announced. Rachel was slightly relieved Hyo-Shin was with him. Eun-Sang explained Jung-Woo’s behavior and Hye-Rim’s retaliation. He pinched the bridge of his nose as Jung-Woo insisted that his title as a prince should protect him. “I’m not sure if the justice Hye-Rim snatched for herself is fair but I am sure Jung-Woo won’t pee on her stuff anymore. Jung-Woo, being a prince means you don’t pee on things when you’re jealous.”
Hyo-Shin picked Hye-Rim up and shook his head. “You can’t be a vigilante. You have to find justice with the adults and trust them to look out for you.”
“That might be too complicated for her,” Rachel said right as Hye-Rim screwed up her face in deep thought. Rachel was more worried at the viciousness in her daughter’s chosen justice. She wasn’t even two and she clearly waited for Jung-Woo to fall asleep before she took the scissors to his hair.
Where did she find them?
“No trust King Appa! JUSTICE!”
Young-Do looked slightly hurt that Hye-Rim didn’t trust him but he didn’t argue with her. “Have a room made up for Jung-Woo. If he can’t be trusted not to pee on everything then he won’t have anything to pee on. I want it simple and plain. No toys.”
He bent down and put his hands on his son’s shoulders. “When you are a prince, you have to be better than everyone else. This is unacceptable. Hye-Rim is only two years old. You are almost five. You will stay in your new room for three days.”
“But...my hair...”
“I will have someone come fix it. Hair grows. You will be fine.” Young-Do held out his hand and led Jung-Woo out of the nursery. Eun-Sang closed her eyes and Hyo-Shin caught her by the shoulders as she slumped. He handed Hye-Rim to Rachel and helped her sit down.
“He’s too much,” she said quietly and started crying. “I thought after Joo-Young almost broke his nose that he would calm down. I don’t think Young-Do dotes on the girls more than he does the boys but...I’m common and he’s aware of that now.”
“This isn’t your fault,” Hyo-Shin said quickly. “He’s just putting his frustration in the wrong direction. Young-Do will put him back on the right path.”
“Hyo-Shin is right,” Rachel said and sat down on Eun-Sang’s other side. “Children fight and can hurt each other. He’ll stop peeing on everything. It just feels like a lot right now.”
“I don’t think Hye-Rim should apologize unless she really feels bad. Jung-Woo is too wrapped up in being a prince. I want him to follow Woo-Young’s example but...” Eun-Sang sighed. “He needs a brother that isn’t Woo-Young.”
Rachel knew what she meant. She kissed Eun-Sang’s cheek right before Hye-Rim sleepily lifted up her first and said, “Justice!” one last time.
three years later. Rachel struggled not to smirk at the ministers of the right and left as the chief magistrate for the capitol gave the crime statistics to the court. Her mandatory education of common children ages eight to fourteen was not a popular program, especially since it included girls.
Young-Do followed it with laws forbidding the marriage of girls under the age sixteen, no matter if they’d menstrated yet and it had been her biggest fight as Prime Minister.
After the reports of lower crime from the magistrate, followed by economic statistics supporting job and market growths, and overall reports of satisfaction among everyone but the richest nobility, Rachel was ready to put forth her next project.
“I want to open a school like this in every province. I request the court and king’s aid in spending the next year travelling to our major cities and implementing schools.” Young-Do knew she was going to do this but neither of them expected the resistance that followed.
“There are rumors you are pregnant again,” Minister Park said thinly. “It is too dangerous.”
Rachel hid her displeasure as best she could. She suspected she was pregnant and that it happened when Hyo-Shin was out of the palace. Young-Do could suddenly become her wall.
“It is not confirmed but I have traveled while pregnant before. My husband--”
“It is not your husband’s child,” Minister Baek cut in.
“There is no way you could possibly know that,” Rachel didn’t intend to get defensive but her temper reared up. “Physician Hyun-Joo is the only one privy to that information and she would rather die than give it to anyone. There is no reason for you to be watching my habits that closely.”
“You should be queen,” Minister Baek said. “This vanity exercise as prime minister--”
“I advice caution,” Young-Do cut in. “It was my idea and I do not regret it. You wouldn’t listen to her if she didn’t have power over you. The queen’s position is important but too easily ignored by old men. Prime Minister Rachel--”
“Has a bloodline many are envious for,” Minister Hae cut in. “If she carries a royal child then she should prioritize her health and safety for the sake of a potential heir. It is the least she can do considering.”
“Considering, what?” Young-Do asked darkly. It shut the room up and the ministers started bowing to him. “Finish your thought, Minister Hae. Considering, what?”
“If the king wishes to bed the prime minister then he should not be impeded in any way,” Minister Hae said slowly. “She should divorce her husband. It is the virtuous thing for a woman to do. Considering she has no shame.”
Young-Do scratched at his eyebrows and sighed heavily. “I don’t believe shame is a necessary qualification to be a virtuous woman. I am not unhappy with the relationship I have with the prime minister nor am I upset at her reasons for it. That should be enough for the court.”
“Is it enough for you?” Rachel asked it later, when they were alone, and she was getting ready for bed. Young-Do liked to remove her binyeo himself and brush out her hair so she often let him. It had become a soothing part of her routine.
“I didn’t think it would be,” he said when he finished and looked at her in the mirror. “I thought I would constantly want something official. But you’ve done what I needed for our country. We’re becoming wealthy and strong after a long war. There is a balance here in my home. Why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant?”
“I didn’t want you to stop me from personally overseeing the new schools.” She laid her head against his shoulder. “And I was nervous because Hyo-Shin and I haven’t been making love as often as we used to. I don’t know how having your child will affect our life. Also, Eun-Sang may be pregnant, too. I’ve been a little jealous of her lately.”
Young-Do pressed a kiss to her forehead. “She said the same thing about you a few nights ago. I try to spread my nights fairly but these last few years, my bias has been clear. I’m sorry to all of you but don’t regret it.”
Rachel kissed him softly. “Neither do I.”
four years later. Young-Do paced unhappily in the corridor outside Hyun-Joo’s surgery. Hyo-Shin sat against the wall, his knee pulled up to his chest, as he leaned back with his eyes closed. Young-Do would’ve thought him too calm if he hadn’t been so pale.
Rachel and Eun-Sang were in labor and it was making him sick with worry. As a royal concubine, Eun-Sang’s labor took precedence over Rachel’s, even though there was a chance she was carrying his child as well.
Rachel’s labor with Hye-Rim had been long and difficult. Eun-Sang’s labor with Jung-Woo had been quick and almost easy. Young-Do told Hyun-Joo to focus on Rachel for that reason.
It ended up being the right decision. Only two hours into labor, Eun-Sang gave birth. A little baby girl was brought out to him and Young-Do cried with relief as Hyun-Joo’s best assistant placed her in his arms. “Her name is Eun-Chae.”
Then Rachel screamed and Young-Do felt his blood go cold. “Let me take her for you,” Hyo-Shin said softly. Young-Do was too distracted to stop him or notice that Hyo-Shin was weeping. “What a beautiful little princess. Congratulations.”
“She needs the wet nurse.” Young-Do tried to pull his attention back to his new daughter. Hyo-Shin patted his arm and then kissed his cheek.
“I’ll take care of her. Focus on Rachel. I’ll be back.” He returned shortly and Young-Do just paced as Rachel’s cries waxed and waned. It was like this the last time. Rachel had lost too much blood and he was in danger of losing her. He needed to insist that she use the measures before they made love.
He needed to stop being selfish with her. He would talk to Hyo-Shin and impress upon him how important it was to protect Rachel’s life.
It felt like hours before Rachel gave a cry of relief and they heard a baby cry. Both Hyo-Shin and he slumped onto the other’s shoulders when Hyun-Joo exited with a small bundle. “Prime Minister Rachel has given birth to a little boy. She is not in danger but I want to keep her here in the surgery. She says his name is Min-Jae.”
Hyun-Joo placed the boy in Hyo-Shin arms and he started laughing softly to himself. “He has your eyes and mouth,” Hyo-Shin said as he placed Min-Jae in Young-Do’s arms. “Do you want to do a blood drop test now or later?”
It suddenly wasn’t important. He studied Hyo-Shin’s face and didn’t see any anger or jealousy. “I don’t need it,” he said. “I just don’t want to be King Appa.”
“Hye-Rim hasn’t given that up yet,” Hyo-Shin teased. “We need to get him to the wet nurse.”
Young-Do nodded and let Hyo-Shin lead him to the newborn nursery. Eun-Chae was already asleep in her cradle. Young-Do didn’t want to release Min-Jae but the wet nurse gave him a stern look and pulled the boy from his arms. So he went over to look at his daughter when he really looked at her.
Eun-Chae looked exactly like Hye-Rim. He waited for the betrayal to hit him. He had no idea Eun-Sang and Hyo-Shin were that close. Eun-Sang told him often that she didn’t have another lover the way Da-Kyung and Ji-Sun did. And yet...here was evidence, that at least once, she did.
But he didn’t feel betrayed. He just felt...happy that his unconventional little family was working and happy. Hyo-Shin had to know Eun-Chae was his daughter because he looked at her the same way he looked at Hye-Rim.
Young-Do smiled to himself. No one understood when he hadn’t insisted on making Rachel queen. These last four years had been confusing for a lot of people as they came to understand that the royal family didn’t follow the rules. But his palace was filled with love and joy in a way his father’s never was.
He had the wet nurse place Min-Jae and Eun-Chae in the same cradle. He put his hand on Hyo-Shin’s shoulder and kissed his temple. “Welcome to the royal family, little ones.”
