Deku takes title of Japan’s number one hero third year running!
Following in the shadow of the longest reigning number one hero, newcomer Deku has a lot to live up to, but he is already breaking records and impressing critics with his heroism, and fans just can’t get enough of him.
In only his third year as a licensed pro, Deku has managed some incredible feats and is shaping up to give the former number one quite a run for his legacy. The retired pro recently shared in an interview that he could not be more proud of his junior and that he is cheering for our new number one the whole way.
A New Ingenium Takes the Mantle
But what can we expect of our dashing (pun intended) new pro?
The youngest son of the Iida family is following in his brother’s footsteps as he officially takes on the name and the legacy of beloved hero Ingenium.
Lemillion Saves One Million
Golden hero Lemillion reclaims his position among the top five pros in only his first week back. After participating in the saving of a suspected one million lives involved in an international hostage crisis, Lemillion saw a 100% popularity increase in the polls and has been recognised by several world leaders for his incredible display of heroism.
Lemillion has recently returned to hero work after taking a year off for paternity leave last Summer. A brief interview with the pro revealed that husband and baby are both doing well and their little one is already starting to show signs of developing a strong quirk.

Former U.A Students Pay Tribute to Late Mentor Yagi Toshinori
How the world is mourning a great hero and the people closest to him are upholding his legacy.

Not All Heroes Wear Capes
U.A high graduate goes on to make major advances in the field of restorative medical science.
Eri, formerly of U.A high school, is currently completing her doctorate at Tokyo University and is expecting to graduate this year with her first PHD. Her influence in the field, however, has already sparked plans for the implementation of several quirk-specialised branches in every major hospital across the country, a system speculated to be fully functioning as soon as next Spring. Having already successfully treated several prominent heroes throughout her blossoming career, we can expect many great things from Eri in the future and wish her all the best with her final exams.

Shouto-Out
Former pro hero Shouto retires at age twenty five in order to pursue a career in nursing. After the new data that came to light last month showed an incline in children born to forced quirk marriages, the ex-pro expressed his interest in becoming involved with caring for and counselling the startling number of those taken into care every year as a result. His partner had this to say, “Shouto has had a lot of difficulty finding a path in life that he believes he truly chose for himself, but I think this is his way of being the hero he wants to be and he has my full support.”
(If you guessed Midoriya as Todoroki’s partner being quoted in this, you guessed right!)

Present Jack
Pro hero and musical talent Earphone Jack has officially joined the Put Your Hands Up Radio team. Rumours that she is set to succeed Japan’s favourite radio personality have already started circulating, but we’re pretty sure the nation’s sweetheart, Present Mic, has got many years yet before we’ll see him retire.

Uravity Saves US Space Shuttle
First person in history to be awarded a knighthood by NASA and her achievements haven’t stopped there. The hero known as Uravity is a staunch advocate for the proposed universal income scheme and her support for the bill has garnered such enthusiasm from fans that it is likely to pass in court this February.

He’s Still Got It!
Present Mic wins lifetime achievement award for Put Your Hands Up Radio, the show he has been proudly presenting since his debut as a hero. Maintaining a huge following and unwavering popularity, his nighttime slot every Friday from 1am to 5am has also earned him a place in the hall of fame for highest number of consecutive awards in radio hosting history, congrats man!
(Mic might not be one of Aizawa’s students, but he is just as proud of his husband’s achievements ❤)
Tsukuyomi Gets His Wings
Tsukuyomi and his quirk, Dark Shadow, have officially taken over at Hawks’ agency after the young hero retired from the field to pour everything into his successor. As it stands, Hawks will continue on to support Tsukuyomi and we wish them both the best with any future plans from here on.
(Possible spoiler for latest manga chapters... but I think the bird man might be taking a leaf from All Might’s book and finding someone to carry on his legacy 😅)
Kacchan’s Kitchen
Newly opened in the most up and coming area of the city, the restaurant will join several others on the renewed marina-front, though its owner and head chef are what really set the place apart. Already it has received great reviews from critics.

Pro hero Pinky opens a second dance studio that offers new prospects for passionate kids who are unable to attend paid classes. Children from low-income families are invited to choose from a variety of options when it comes to which discipline they wish to pursue and all equipment, performance outfits and other costs are covered by the studio.

Romanogers: Trade Her Back | Ch. 2 - Steve’s Apartment

The forties smell different. It's strange, but that's the first thing I notice. Like gasoline and smoke. Not at all what I had been expecting.
I couldn’t tell you where we are if I wanted to.
“Welcome to my old apartment.” Steve sends me one of his dorky smiles.
The building is made of brick. Six evenly-spaced weathered doors line the front of it. Steve leads me up a few concrete stairs to the end of the row of lower doors. He kicks a brick to the side revealing a key. Making quite the spectacle out of it, he unlocks the apartment and beckons me inside.
“Oh-” Steve’s voice trails off as we both stare at the wreck that is his old home. “I wouldn’t have been in here since I left for the war but that would have only been a few months ago.”
“Someone made themselves a doorway through the window,” I gesture to the smashed glass.
“Hold on.” Steve’s voice darkens as he pushes me behind him. Seriously? I shove past him and start examining the place, ready in case someone decides to attack us from around the corner.
After a few minutes of me going left and him going right, we determine that the trashed apartment is empty. Completely empty; not just of people, but of furniture and valuables as well. Whoever broke in might be on their way back here right now.
“Board up that window with something. Make sure that everywhere else is still secure. And why the hell did you think it was a good idea to leave your key under a brick?” I speed back to the front door, locking it tightly and testing it’s integrity a few times, just to make sure.
“Only Bucky knew I kept the key under there.” Steve says back as he picks up a piece of the broken couch to place on the window.
“It’s not that hard to find.” I mutter as I begin testing light switches. All of them seem to be working, as the lights are slowly warming up and I haven’t started an electrical fire yet.
A few moments of strange silence pass over us as we work on straightening up the place and testing some of the appliances. Unsurprisingly, everything seems to be in working order, there’s even a small carton of milk in the fridge.
Steve and I have always been a chatty pair. I don’t think I’ve ever realized that till now, when we haven’t spoken in at least twenty minutes. Superhero work is tough, but when you’re with your team, there’s a certain unspoken agreement not to mention any hardships unless we have to. Keep the mood light, you know? That’s maybe why this quiet feels unfamiliar to me.
“What do we do now?” I ask to break the silence.
Steve gives me a confused look, almost gesturing to the pile of rubble he was sorting through.
“I mean after we finish cleaning. You jumped us to the forties, did you have a plan in mind?” I try to make my tone sarcastic and teasing but given the solemn mood we’re both in, I don’t think it transfers.
“It’s Saturday.” Steve says quietly. I’ve never seen this man so deep in thought, even back when Wanda had put that nightmare in his mind.
Suddenly, I remember. “Your dance with Peggy.”
He nods.
I want to say something to comfort him. Yes, we went back in time for this but he deserves to be happy for once. Even if it’s just an artificial sort of forties-haze joy. Although, he’s already seen her at ninety years old. Hell, he went to her funeral, saw her body.
Oh, that’s messed up. He said at eight right?
“You’d better get ready Prince Charming, the sun’s starting to set.” I smirk. “Don’t want to show up looking like you just made out with her niece or anything.”
Steve sends me a glare, though I finally see a small smile fight it’s way onto his face. “You know what Romanoff --”
“What? I didn’t say a bad language word.” My snarky facial expression turns into a grin.
“Just for that, you’d better have this whole place cleaned by the time I get back.” He says, standing and brushing some brick dust off his pants.
I roll my eyes. “Please, I’ll leave you some of the fun.”

Steve left a few minutes ago. He told me not to leave the apartment because, well, can you imagine what would happen if I walked down a street in the 1940s wearing a skin-tight suit? But besides that, he’s right. Life was different back . . . now, and I would probably behave like an alien to them.
The kitchen and living room have now been swept out and all the bits of rubble removed. Steve was able to salvage the couch cushions and set them up like a children’s fort-style floor couch. Since everything in the kitchen was mostly in working order, that looks almost normal. If you don’t count the fact that there is no table or chairs.
There is no TV, just a small radio to entertain me. Fantastic.
Although, I did just come back from the dead so maybe it would be alright for me to rest my neck for a minute or two. I lay down on the floor couch. Just a couple minutes and then I’ll keep cleaning. Steve should be --
I don’t know where I am. A strange orange material seems to be covering my eyes. I reach my hands up to remove it, only to find that the material is surrounding me. It’s like I’m walking through an orange snow globe if all of the snow had transformed into a million complicated crystalized patterns.
What is happening? And why does it feel like I’m walking through quicksand?
Before any of my questions are answered, the orange world flashes brightly, and there is only darkness.

I can’t believe Tumblr formatted this all for me. I wrote it on a Doc with indents and everything, this is fantastic. Anywho, sorry this took so long to write out, it’s about three letter-sized pages in length so. Let me know if I got the characters right or otherwise, I’m very open to constructive criticism.

J20 Postscript: How I Spent January 20, 2017–A True Story from Trump’s Inauguration
That was the morning we overslept—Friday, the twentieth of January, 2017. It was every activist’s greatest fear: our cell phone alarms blaring in unison, our friends running around us scrambling to get ready, while we just lay there, arms thrown haphazardly across our faces, dead to the world.
How could we sleep with Marius Mason in prison, the polar ice caps gushing into the ocean, and Donald Trump entering office?
For months, reality had hung on us like a bad dream; riding into DC was like entering its epicenter. Every Nazi troll on the internet was promising to gun us down in cold blood. Newspapers were reporting that two million bikers had promised to form a wall of meat between us and the motorcade of the President-elect. We were all going to prison—if we made it out of surgery. If you want a picture of the future, imagine Pepe the Frog stamping on a human face, forever.
All night, we’d discussed the situation, speaking one by one, weighing our options, going around the living room in circles the way one passes one’s tongue over a broken tooth again and again. If Trump entered office with the mandate of an acquiescent population, deporting ten million people would be the new normal. But if we tried to interrupt the spectacle, they would mass-arrest us, put all our names on a list, and our parents and partners would never be allowed to fly again. Would they surround us as soon as we assembled? Would the Nazis shoot us? It was a nightmare from which slumber offered no respite.
And there we were, asleep at our moment of truth. Downtown was filling up with Secret Service agents and crimson-hatted know-nothings as our friends shook us by the shoulders and called out our names. Protesters were already lining up to blockade the checkpoints to the parade route when they resorted to flinging cups of cold water in our faces. It was no use: we were a thousand floors below, wandering the foggy land of Nod.
They wheeled the bed out through the broad double doors of the bedroom, down the narrow hallway, across the living room strewn with backpacks and sleeping bags. They carried it down the steep front steps, bracing themselves against the iron railing. Shoulders to the headboard, they rolled us up the hill past the row houses, through alleyways and intersections and shopping districts into the very heart of the nation’s capital.
The streets were ominously tranquil: a jogger here, a couple pushing a stroller there. There was no indication of the forces massing downtown. The branches of the trees sailed past us overhead, their shadows briefly fingering the bedclothes crumpled across our chests.
Then the buildings opened around us and we were in Logan Circle—the convergence point for the anti-capitalist march, a vortex drawing in all the rage and courage within a thousand miles. Hundreds of our friends had gathered already, their faces concealed beneath bandannas and balaclavas, a swirling maelstrom of anarchists and rebels. More were pouring in from the side streets every minute, pulling on masks and gloves, zipping up their sweatshirts, cinching their windbreakers tight around their wrists, unfurling the great black banners proclaiming NO PEACEFUL TRANSITION—FIGHT BACK NOW—JOIN THE RESISTANCE.
Our friends pushed us to the front of the throng and we set out, a dozen black-gloved hands on the headboard, our cheeks resting on silk pillowslips, our bodies cradled in gauzy silk sheets, the brocaded bedspread folded back beneath our splayed arms as the bed rumbled across the black asphalt. Behind us, the others poured into the street, linking arms, roaring out a full-throated call and response. Are you ready? Yes, we’re ready.
This was the notorious black bloc—bristling, if Trump’s Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense is to be believed, with “banners, shields, bull horns, noise making devices, gas masks, medical supplies, police scanners, spray paint, ladders, bolt cutters, handcuff keys, and code manuals for covert communications,” dressed in “steal toe boots [sic], body armor, face masks, helmets, military gear, sports equipment, and other such attire,” wielding “Molotov cocktails, mace/chemical spray, flares, bats, sign polls [sic], bricks, rocks, glass, nails, padlocks, slingshots, brass knuckles, martial arts weapons, and bottles of waste.” A medieval monster in a modern fairy tale.
Picture the scene as it appeared to the helicopters thundering overhead: the amorphous black mass driving before it the white quadrilateral of the bed—like a Malevich painting, White Square on a Black Block. Ascending higher, the pilots could make out what awaited us a few blocks away: a lattice of metal fences and concrete barriers defended by 28,000 security personnel. It wasn’t the red-hatted fools we had to fear, but the full might of the state. Squads of National Guardsmen clustered around military vehicles at every intersection; fleets of mobile riot police circling on bicycles and motorcycles; vans packed full of armored officers fidgeting impatiently with pepper spray dispensers and bundles of zip ties. All the mercenaries within a thousand miles become a part of the hostile physical architecture of the capitol, become hostility itself.
Freeze the frame, here, as the march arrives at Franklin Square and the police move into action, rushing to flank us on their bicycles, to chase us with their zip ties, to shoot their less-lethal munitions at us. At the front of the march, the two of us lie in the bed, sunk in unconsciousness, limbs and hair intertwined, jolted by the motion of the wheels over the uneven pavement, our limp bodies without the dubious armor of sweatshirts or bandannas, beneath a hovering hailstorm of projectiles—percussion grenades and rubber bullets and tear gas canisters and frozen arcs of pepper spray. Our frail flesh on the chopping block of the state.
A hush falls. The police, the black bloc, the Trump supporters in their stupid red hats, the screwballs at Franklin Square demanding the legalization of marijuana, the photographers and spectators and passersby—all of them remain motionless. Only our friends continue forward, picking up speed, sneakers flying across the pavement as they charge the fortified lines of police, driving the bed like a battering ram before them. Finally, shoving the headboard in unison, they launch us into the void, remaining frozen in place behind us.
The police lines open before us like the Red Sea and we sail right through. Not on account of Molotov cocktails, pepper spray, flares, bats, bricks, rocks, glass, nails, padlocks, slingshots, or brass knuckles, mind you, not because of the polls or stolen toes—it’s very important that you understand this—but because of the dreaming.
On the other side of the columns of Kevlar and polycarbonate, we continue hurtling down the street, zigzagging between the roadblocks, through metal-fenced checkpoints, past detachments of callow Guardsmen and handfuls of stupefied bikers and gauntlets of snappily dressed pundits crowing in victory or wringing their hands. Our bed coasts by regiments of porta-potties standing at attention, marshaled to hold the excrement of a hundred thousand patriots—through the half-filled stands where bootlickers fresh from Rust Belt exurbs crowd together, mouths agape in a monosyllable—and we roll to a halt in the center of the parade route, blocking the way to the motorcade and the future.
The sudden stop shocks us awake. Starting from unconsciousness, we find ourselves in a petrified city.
Blinking, we take it all in: the bleachers dotted with imbeciles—the armored cars—the secret service agents caught midstride, their faces fixed as glowering masks. Behind them, a brass band blows soundlessly, cheeks bulging, sustaining a single inaudible note.
We rub our eyes in unison. But when we open them again, nothing has changed. Pushing back the bedclothes, we swing our legs over the sides of the bed and step from our brocaded barricade onto Pennsylvania Avenue. The air is absolutely still.
Moving in slow motion through this frozen phantasmagoria as if passing through a photograph, a flaming limousine appears trailing a column of smoke like a bridal train. The smoke extends a hundred feet in the air, blotting out the flags, darkening the asphalt, casting its shadow over the uniformed soldiers on parade. The windows of the limousine are smashed out so we can see that there is no one at the wheel. It pulls to a halt before us.
Should we get in? But what address would we give? Where would we like to go?
A mile north of the parade route, life continues as normal. Drivers enter their credit cards into parking meters; cashiers at kiosks dispense cigarettes and chocolate-covered monoglycerides beside panhandlers; waitresses and system administrators toil to placate creditors and absentee landlords. Carpenters refurbish drab box houses in someone else’s suburbs as amateur pundits tweet about someone else’s political party. All sleepwalkers in someone else’s dream, captives in never-never land.
This scene, not the White House, is truly the center of the nightmare, whence come all the other horrors. The police are not needed here—not in such numbers, anyway. The absence of an alternative does their work.
The dreamlessness itself is the police. It is what imposes the nightmare.
For the first time, we look at each other, you and I. What is our dream? What will transport us unscathed through the lines of riot police? Where do we want our burning limousine to take us? Where do we want to go?
Dream alone, it’s just a dream. Dream together, it can be reality.

Welcome to a series of MMN blogs where I’ll be looking at where we, Onyx Path, are with some of our methods of getting our projects out to you all. Seems to make sense here at the start of 2019.
Today, the topic is Kickstarters.
A little backstory:
Onyx Path ran our first Kickstarter for the V20 Companion in early 2012, the same year as we started publishing. Crowdfunding was a wild and wooly place back then, and KS was starting to be the “brand name” for the process.
I’d watched a few of our friends run campaigns, both successful and failed, and knew going into it that neither myself, who was running the whole thing, nor Justin, who was the developer of the book and as interested as I was in this new method of financing a project, really knew how it would turn out.
When I had put together Onyx Path as a publishing business, I hadn’t considered crowd-funding, but Justin and I had heard enough from our Vampire community clamoring for the V20 Companion to be a matching Deluxe book to V20 to know that we should figure out how to do it in a Deluxe format. Kickstarter seemed a way to get the needed upfront money for the Deluxe treatment.
Otherwise, the V20 Companion would have been available as PDF and PoD versions on DTRPG only. We just didn’t have the cash to pay the printer what they needed upfront to purchase all the Deluxe cover material, create embossing stamps, all that.
So, that’s how it started, this wild and tumultuous affair with Kickstarter that we’ve had for seven years and 33 Kickstarter campaigns.

Here’s where we are now:
I told you all that so I could tell you this. We started with a very simple need – to afford a deluxe cover – and every single KS we did taught us more and more about how to run a KS.
If you joined us along the way, there may have been a method we used that turned you off, or another that you thought was awesome. From our point of view, we were learning how to do it well. Stretch Goals, Rewards, Add-ons, voting for sections in the books, when to run it, how much text to have finished and how much to share. The list goes on of the elements we have tried to add with some degree of success or another.
Now, this year, our KSs mostly have a few elements in common, like we try and keep the Reward Tiers to a smallish number, we go live only after we have all the text we need finished, and we reveal that text in chunks during the Kickstarter.
Getting Projects Into Stores:
Unlike when we started, we’re now doing most of our KSs with the stated goal of paying for a traditional print run that covers not just the backers’ copies but also to print an amount that will go into stores via our sales partners at Studio2 and IPR (who are they? look below in the Blurbs! section).
We might still do some Deluxes along the way, don’t worry, or some other special projects, but we’re exploring this trad printing option right now.
This greatly increases our retail options, which is a good thing as it’s another way for folks to get our games, and adds to the value of the Retailer Reward Tiers that have been a part of our KSs since the first couple of them.
Now Retailers can choose to wait and order the projects when they are made available through distribution channels, or they can opt in for pledging to the Retailer Reward Tier and get the copies earlier, with some bonus Screens and the Stretch Goal rewards they can sell or give away, and if they have polled their customers to get confirmed sales – those are books they don’t need to worry about selling off their shelves.

Getting Projects Out In a Timely Manner:
There’s no question about it, we prioritized everything else over hitting the Kickstarter estimates. This wasn’t because we didn’t care about them, but because we cared more about the quality of the projects we were creating.
And, in fact, still do.
BUT, we’ve leveraged our experience and are making sure that our Kickstarter projects have completed text before we go live with the KS now, which eliminates a huge percentage of our timeliness issues while still allowing our creators the time they need to insure high quality writing and rules.
That means that we have a bit less flexibility in the sorts of Rewards and Stretch Goals that add to the KS’d project itself, but its a trade-off that is working out pretty well. And we still have Stretch Goals that build additional and Companion books, so those extra sections are still being created.
Since we’ve put the “No KS without complete text” rule into effect, we’ve delivered Monarchies of Mau, Cavaliers of Mars, and Changeling: The Lost 2nd Edition earlier than estimated, and things still look great for Fetch Quest and Dragon-Blooded. To name a couple close to shipping.
Now no doubt, we’re still popping out projects that had troubled histories from before that methodology went into effect, so it did take us a while to get to this stage, but we’re here now and it’s working great.
Getting Projects to Backers (Kickstarter Shipping):
This is an ugly topic, I’m afraid. Don’t let the kids see it.
The biggest negative aspect of a Kickstarter campaign, in terms of costs and time spent, is shipping the rewards out. Shipping costs are insane if you are shipping from the US to anywhere outside the US. We look for working partnerships with shippers around the world to offset some of those prices, and sometimes it works.
We have seen shipping costs on some projects as high as $50 an average to Canada, $64 on average to the EU, and $70 as a rest of the world average. Then there are customs fees on top of that. So, like I say, we keep looking for alternatives.
Plus, now we hear that USPS, who is often used as the middle-man by the big-name shippers, is raising their rates, so we’ll need to deal with that.
We also have been through another round of getting quotes from fulfillment shippers, and trying to find ones that can be relied on and stay reliable (and that we can afford) has been, and may always be, an ongoing process.
Sorry, I know that just reading about these issues is a drag, but they are a very real challenge that we work on with each KS. We’ve tried the “tack the shipping price on after the KS” method, and that was received…poorly by the backers.
We also can’t sidestep the whole thing and “eat the costs” or even a decent bite of them. We just aren’t Amazon, for good or ill, and our volume of ship-out packages is not even close to being in the zone where a company can do that.
So, we keep on baking in the shipping costs as best as we can accurately estimate them with our fulfillment partners, and at least our backers can look at that and what they see is what they get.

Getting Projects Kickstarted:
This is kind of a catch-all topic. First, there’s the question of which projects we are KSing. What’s the criteria? Well, new game line core books, to start. We want those in stores, and we want folks to find out about them, and Kickstarter does both of those things for us.
There are also the Deluxe Exalted “fatsplat” books, which we look at as a part of a series, the core CofD 2nd Edition books, and select WoD supplements. Doing the V5 Chicago By Night Kickstarter, for example, gave us that visibility I mentioned above, as well as a chance to let backers, and by extension the larger WoD community, a chance to see where we would be going with the text.
Basically, do we think the project would benefit more from being KS’d than not, and not all would.
Next in this topic, we have the way our KSs are now run thanks to our “Kickstarter Concierge” James Bell, who sets up all our KSs now, makes sure that they are run as we’ve agreed – and fun for our backers is a HUGE part of that – and then creates and runs the BackerKit back-end site after the KS is over.
Having a dedicated Kickstarter runner has made a huge difference in customer service, and as my list of Kickstarters that I ran keeps shrinking, I am so glad that I could pass on the responsibilities of handling our KSs to James.
I mentioned that James is also running our post-Kickstarter BackerKit sites, and BK has also been a huge help in the handling of our KSs. We now use them for every KS; they are just set up to make it so much easier to track all the rewards folks can pledge for and Add-on, and for us to get out to backers. More accurate for the backers, and faster for us: win/win.
Finally, we’re trying a new thing this coming year, as even with James, we’re hard-pressed to run all the Kickstarter campaigns we’d like to – that we think would be good for the projects we’re making.
Our friends and Handiwork Games will be creating the Scarred Lands 5e Creature Collection and then running its Kickstarter on a new Onyx Path Publishing Kickstarter account. If this works out, we’ll have more flexibility on which KSs happen when, and we’ll look at how things go and maybe we’ll have more of our projects KS’d by other folks.

CAPCOM'S INJUSTICES TO THEIR FANS
Many beloved franchises came from Capcom. They started the fighting game genre with Street Fighter. They gave us everyone's favorite blue bomber, Mega Man. They popularized the horror game concept with Resident Evil. They gave us Monster Hunter, which has a large cult following because of its online playability.
But in all of their success and growth, Capcom has lost touch with its fans and became an incredibly greedy company. They have abused DLC, released incomplete games, forced current games to become obsolete with re-releases, and seriously mishandled their franchises.
DLC
DLC has been at the center of Capcom's greed, so it is the best place to start. Capcom is not the first company to utilize DLC, but they were certainly one of the pioneers who invented its widespread practice.
Alternate costumes or skins have always been an additional paid item, so I will not fault Capcom for creating hundreds of costumes for their games—even though many of them were developed pre-launch and used as a pre-order incentive. What I will fault them for however, is taking away a portion of a complete product on the disc and selling it as DLC.
First, in Marvel vs Capcom 3, retailers leaked that Jill and Shuma-Gorath would be DLC characters. This was before the game came out, and before the full roster was even revealed. For news of DLC characters to come out this early meant that the characters have already been completed but are being sold for extra profit. This was confirmed by data miners once they got their hands on the game.
Data miners also exposed Capcom's DLC tactic in the notorious case of Street Fighter x Tekken. They discovered that the 12 characters who were planned to be released as DLC were already on the disc! In other words, players were paying to unlock content already on their disc, instead of paying for content that was developed post-release.
Naturally, fans were outraged and demanded an explanation. Capcom replied with several poor excuses but the biggest one was "We wanted to save hard drive space on your consoles." In reality, developers don't care about how much HD space players have, and players don't ask developers to make their products take up less space. This is Capcom's poor attempt at disguising their greedy tactics as a favor towards the player.
Fast forward to Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite, and it's painfully clear that Capcom doesn't care about their reputation anymore. Their games have grown so big in communities and popularity that they know it will sell. Half a year before the game's release date, Capcom announced that there would be a season pass for 6 DLC characters. One of which is actually in the main storyline, causing fans to wonder if the character was already complete before release.
Judging by our experience with Street Fighter x Tekken, it's guaranteed that these characters will have already been developed by the time the game launches. And unlike SFV, there will not be a method to earn in-game currency to unlock these characters. In other words, Capcom is going full speed ahead with making players pay for a roster. Keep in mind that Infinite's initial roster size is smaller than Marvel 3, and Marvel 3's definitive version with extra characters is still smaller than Marvel 2's. So if you've been supporting the series, you’re getting less but paying more.
RE-RELEASED GAMES
No one does re-releases worse than Capcom. The second iteration of Street Fighter IV, Super, was released as a separate disc rather than an optional upgrade for players who already own the original disc. So players who have kept up since the original release would have to pay a total of $100.00 to continue playing. This was the same case between MvC3 and Ultimate MvC3.
But for later iterations of SFIV, Arcade Edition and Ultra, players were given the option to upgrade from Super via DLC. And it's entirely possible with SFV, since that's how new characters are patched into the game. Capcom justified Super SFIV by saying that a separate disc was needed because of how much the game has changed between the different versions. However, this is yet again another poor excuse. Unless the game's core assets are changed, there is no reason to release a separate disc. You don't even have to understand how game programming works to know this. Just look at all the mods for PC games like Skyrim— everything can be drastically changed in a patch.
When SFV was announced, Capcom promised their fans there not be a re-release of the game. They intend to support the game over a long period of time with seasonal DLC characters. Not even a year later, the game has already begun to decline because players are not satisfied with the game’s balance and design. This is an opinion shared by both the casual and competitive gamers of all nationalities. The game is in dire need of a “rebirth” so we shall see if Capcom will break their promise and release Super SFV.
INCOMPLETE GAMES:
Developers will try to be subtle with DLC and insist that it's to "add" to our gameplay experience, to "prolong" our enjoyment. Often times, what fans really find out is that the game is incomplete in terms of playability or content. And the "extra content" being sold as DLC, is actually an essential part to having a complete experience of the game, rather than a continuation of the experience.
There is no better example than Capcom's SFV. SFV was released with only 16 characters, no Arcade mode, a dysfunctional online mode and a barebones story mode. Yes, the fighting game genre has grown to the point where much of the playability is now in tournaments and online play, but this is hardly enough for newcomers who are spending $60.00 for an incomplete game!
Secondly, the price of DLC characters far exceeded the ease of earning in-game currency. In-game currency could only be earned once each mode, and once each character. In other words, there was a cap on in-game currency that can be earned. And very few people would be willing or able to complete Hard mode Survival with all of the characters.
In-game currency could also be earned by playing online, but players would have to grind it out despite Capcom saying you only have to "play a few hours here and there." But with dysfunctional online gameplay and constant server maintenance, players had even less time to play online. All in all, you'd have to invest a large amount of time to earn any of the characters if you want to avoid paying extra money for DLC characters.
The entire point of having an option to buy DLC characters for free was to compensate for the small starting roster, and their long-term goal of adding characters to the game. But they limited the ability to earn in-game currency so that players would be more inclined to purchase season passes. It wasn't until Season 2 that Capcom finally released more options to earn in-game currency, but they do little to help the costs of purchasing a DLC character.
With SFV, Capcom became a little more clever with their tactics. They come off as doing players a favor by having an in-game method of earning currency. But an average player would not want to put in so much time playing the game just to earn enough, so they would end up purchasing season passes anyway.
Even more than a year later, players are still unsatisfied with SFV as a product. It still lacks an Arcade mode, the cinematic story was a disappointment, there are numerous balance issues, and Capcom has still yet to address the many complaints of the game.
With Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite on the horizon, many feel that Capcom will not change their methods. First, Capcom has already announced a Season Pass for 6 DLC characters. Second, there is no in-game currency to purchase any of these characters. So right off the bat, MvC:I's complete roster will be monetized because of Capcom's greed. Even if players are interested in the game, they would have to shell out maybe twice or thrice the retail amount to have all the characters.
MISHANDLING THEIR FRANCHISES
All of the above is proof that Capcom is mishandling their video game franchises. But no franchise has been treated worse than the Mega Man series. You will never see another franchise this popular and have no games made for it. Anniversary re-releases and mobile games don’t count.
It all started with Mega Man Legends 3, one of the biggest video game announcements of its time. Developers constantly updated us on Twitter and involved the fans with polls. And yet somehow, Capcom screwed up everything as usual.
Several months into development, they announced that a Prototype version of this game would be released. Essentially, it was the game’s prologue chapter released as a demo. Fans were pretty excited that they were going to get a taste of the game in the near future... except there were two problems.
First of all, fans would have to pay for it. That's right folks, what's supposed to be a free sample to the game is being sold as a product. Secondly, Capcom announced that development of the game hinges on the success of the Prototype’s sales. When you think about it, this is not that different than a ransom. Mega Man Legends 3's future is being held hostage by Capcom, and fans have to pay up money if they want to see the whole game.
Not only is this one of the worst video game development decisions ever made, it is also the only one of its kind. No other developer has ever done this before. The decision to sell a beta of the game in order to gauge interest only shows how incompetent and greedy the company is.
Mega Man is one of the most popular franchises in video game history and one of Capcom's earliest successes. The franchise itself is branched into many different series, and Legends is one of the more popular ones despite having only 2 titles. When Mega Man was announced for Super Smash Bros. 4, the world erupted with excitement. So for Capcom to use the Prototype to gauge interest is really just a lie to hide the fact that they were trying to monetize the game even further.
But the fans never even got a chance to prove their loyalty. 10 months after Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune mysteriously left the company, Capcom announced the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3. Outraged and confused, fans demanded an answer and Capcom said that the game did not receive enough support from its fans. But wasn't that the entire point of selling the Prototype? To see if its sales justify finishing the game?
The 3DS had sold 11.4 million units worldwide in the same year the game was cancelled. You don't need to do the math or be a statistician to understand that a popular franchise on a popular console would have been a huge success. So why did Capcom pull the plug on guaranteed profit?
Because they couldn't finish the project without Inafune. Like Sakurai, Inafune is the kind of director who oversees all aspects of the game. He may not be as involved as Sakurai is with Smash Bros., but his contribution to the game is large enough to be essential in the game’s development.
Most likely, Capcom tried to impose their greedy business tactics on Inafune’s creations, starting with the Prototype ordeal. Inafune disagreed, and eventually was let go or quit voluntarily. To control the damage, Capcom assured fans that MML3 would continue, but ultimately realized they could not finish the game without Inafune's vision. When the game was finally cancelled, their only excuse was "lack of fan support" because it's better than coming out and saying "We needed Inafune."
Ever since MML3's cancellation, Capcom has underutilized or misused the Mega Man brand. In SF x Tekken, they released "Bad Box Art" Mega Man as an actual character. This version of Mega Man is an obese, old, and pathetic version of Mega Man. It was meant to poke fun at America's terrible box art of the first Mega Man game, which has become a meme, but it was also a bad move on Capcom's part. Fighting game fans don't want a joke character, and Mega Man fans wanted to play their favorite blue hero again. This fad was only amusing to people who didn’t play SF x Tekken or don’t care about Mega Man.
It might have been hilarious, but in light of MML3's cancellation, many felt it was an abusive mockery of the character Mega Man. In Marvel vs Capcom 3, many felt Capcom would be fools to pass up an opportunity to add Mega Man X. And Capcom proved them right— they instead added Zero and released a DLC skin for Zero to look like Mega Man X. Although Zero's presence in MvC3 was welcomed, fans also wanted to play as Mega Man X with his own voice and move set.
It was only until recently that Mega Man appeared favorably in crossovers. He was in both Project x Zone games, made a huge splash in Smash Bros. 4, and now he's back in Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. But if you exclude his crossover appearances and re-released ports, you will realize that Capcom has not made an original Mega Man game ever since MML3's cancellation.
This further proves that Capcom does not know how to make another Mega Man game without its creator, Inafune. The Mega Man brand is wasted on Capcom, and could be utilized to do so much more. With Mega Man's inclusion in Smash, many have even entertained the idea of transferring ownership to Nintendo, who did a great job of portraying Mega Man in Smash Bros. 4.
CONCLUSION
Anyone who kept up with Capcom within the past decade would know all of this. They know Capcom has a bad reputation when it comes to DLC and their greed, and they know that Capcom gets a lot of hate for how they approach their games. And most of all, they know there is no defense to Capcom.You can't say "They're a company who needs to make money" because all that does is state the obvious. Nobody denies that a company should make money, especially if their games are supported by DLC over the long term. But there's justifying DLC with post-development expenses, and then there's painfully obvious greed- and I shouldn't have to explain which one Capcom falls under.Take a look at Nintendo with Fire Emblem Awakening, Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros. 4. All of these games have DLC that you have to pay for just like Capcom's games, but there are two major differences.
First of all, their games are complete. Fire Emblem Awakening is a lengthy RPG full of side quests, and a full army of recruitable units. DLC is not an essential part of the full experience. There is only one supplementary story DLC, but the rest are bonus maps that help with EXP growth and earning currency.
Mario Kart 8 comes with a full roster of characters and still has 8 cups with 4 race tracks each. The game improved on the popular kart customization and online gameplay. Their DLC consists of characters and tracks that were developed after the game's release. Even if there were no DLC, there would be no complaints about the lack of content or how incomplete the game feels.
When it comes to content, very few games can match Smash Bros. 4, pound for pound. The roster size increased from Brawl's 39 to a whopping 51 characters at launch. They added a mode where 8 players can play at once. Every stage now has a "competitive" version for the more hardcore tournament players. And the game was released on both the Wii U and 3DS. With so many modes, characters, and options to play, you’re definitely getting more than your 60 dollars’ worth.
All of the game's DLC were also developed post-release. Many of the fans strongly favored DLC characters to see new faces or old personal favorites come back, and Sakurai delivered on both. Even in ARMS, developers have announced that all of their future DLC would be free. Nintendo a great example of how DLC should be done. Their games are complete, delivered on time, and any ideas that couldn't make it into the main game are sold as DLC.
Let's take a look at SNK, a fellow fighting game developer like Capcom but with even less popularity and a smaller budget. On launch, the game had a full roster of 50 characters and a complete story mode. 7 months later, they released 4 DLC characters that fans wanted the most. Their two new stages were also free, unlike Capcom. On top of that, some of their DLC costumes were temporarily free to download. And even though their game had awful visuals, SNK released a patch to improves its textures and now the game looks significantly better.
How is it possible that SNK was able to release a more complete product and provide better support than Capcom? It's because of Capcom's greed, incompetence, and complacency. In their greed, Capcom sacrifices the quality of their game to make a profit. Because of their incompetence, Capcom can't even properly balance their fighting games, leaving their competitive community frustrated. And because their brand is so popular, Capcom has become complacent and therefore puts less effort into their games.
I cannot support Capcom as a consumer, even if their games are enjoyable, I cannot give them money in good conscience knowing how many times they screwed their fans over. Unfortunately, many fighting game enthusiasts grew up with Capcom games and developed an emotional attachment to them. Even if they have their complaints, it’s difficult to let go of Street Fighter and Marvel. They reluctantly stick with the games or convince themselves to enjoy it. Either way, they are enabling Capcom's behavior, so Capcom will not "learn from their mistakes." They will continue sacrificing the integrity and quality of their game to make a profit. Someday, I hope the magic of nostalgia and loyalty runs out, and that they brand burns to the ground.
I hope for a future where their franchises are bought off by other companies who can utilize them better. I hope for a future where the trend of overtly greedy DLC is punished by boycotts. I hope for a future where the integrity and content of video games are no longer sacrificed for a quick buck.

On the EVO donation drive
If you’re reading this on Tumblr and still following me you probably know that I pretty much only come around to post about EVO and then peace out a few days later. I’m not sure how many of you that is because Im not 100% on how the new dashboard works but if you are here then you know I’m around a little early. But I’m posting *about* EVO anyway so there ya go.

And as a final pretense before I really get into this I’m just gonna be honest this is gonna be pretty rant-y, so it might not be a super focused read and will probably contain a few expletives so just be pre-warned.
Originally I was gonna come here and I was going to break down the poll game by game, essentially breaking down why I felt like each game shouldn’t be voted for and why Marvel should. But as it stands right now the winner is going to be either Marvel or Pokken, so this is mostly going to be centered around why I think Marvel is the most deserving game, and why I feel Pokken just might be the least deserving, or at least one of the least deserving.
And every time I look at that generosity page my stomach does flips because it’s literally like a best/worst case scenario. But the funny part about this entire situation is I feel like Marvel shouldn’t even be on this poll. Marvel absolutely *should* already have its spot. Regardless of how you the individual might feel about Marvel 3 in particular, Marvel vs. Capcom has been practically synonymous with EVO. Up until only last year Marvel, be it 2, 3, or Ultimate 3, has always been sort of the penultimate game for EVO, only behind whatever Street Fighter was out at the time. I don’t know if I agree with IFC Yipes in that Marvel made EVO (mostly because I haven’t been around *that* long), but I do agree that without it EVO never would have reached the point that it has. And you look at Marvel 3 specifically, and that game has been a staple of EVO through damn near every iteration of Street Fighter 4, even lasting long enough to share the stage with Street Fighter 5, outlived who knows how many Netherrealms games, Soul Caliburs, Tekkens, Personas, you name it. And that’s not to knock (most) of those games but to make a point that not even taking into account 2, Marvel 3 specifically has been a prefixture of this event for a long ass time
And never mind the countless moments that the game has given us. Back in 2013 what was one of the top things people talked about when EVO was over? Justin’s absolutely incredible run, beating odds on favorite Chris G and going on to nearly defeat Floker to win his first Marvel 3 EVO. Then there was the following year when he clutched it out against F Champ and beat Chris G once more to finally actually do it.
Hell even last year, Chris G, despite being the odds on favorite to win several years in a row, *finally* went ahead and took the one tournament that had alluded him for years. And the year before that when KBR (even though I dont much care for him) became the first non-American to win Marvel at EVO.
People have known for a minute with MvCI on the horizon that this was probably going to be Marvel 3′s last year at EVO, and so people were gearing up for it’s proper final sendoff and now you’re telling me that Marvel might not even be *at* EVO?
And I know there’s a lot of people who agree with me on this because every where I go, even from people who voted for different games, even for people who voted for Pokken, I keep hearing the same thing:
“I’m voting for Pokken, but Marvel absolutely deserves to be there”
“Marvel shouldn’t even be a part of the poll”
“There shouldn’t even be a poll, Marvel should take that 9th slot”
And don’t even get me started on how tight I am that there are not one but TWO Smash games, games that barely even qualify as fighting games, games that a good chunk of the FGC never wanted around in the first place, at EVO, but Marvel might not. Especially since y’all are a good chunk of the people pushing for Pokken (which we’ll get to trust me). If I hear one more Melee player complain about Melee being on Saturday and not Sunday while Marvel might not even *be* at EVO I honestly might lose my shit.
And I mean no disrespect to my Smash 4 community, particularly the local Nebraska scene cuz y’all know I have nothing but respect for you guys. My problem really mostly is with Melee, that relic of a game that people just cant seem to let go of. But it’s so funny to me at how often the Smash crowd, particularly Melee, talks about how much they don’t need the FGC and yet they won’t leave.
But it isn’t even really about that. I could sit here and talk shit about Melee all day long but you know whatever. They have there spot and that’s fine. But suffice to say that if it were up to me, Melee would get booted in favor of Marvel in a heartbeat.
But let’s talk about this poll for an honest minute though. If you remember the donation drive they did a while ago and compare it to this one, the last one blows this one way out of the water. Every single game on that list was at least, you know, a fighting game, with actual communities that would absolutely show up to play. I mean there was Melee and Brawl of course but again shit, at least those two games are closer to fighting games than shit like Windjammers, and Nidhogg. There wasn’t goofy meme-y shit like those two, and ARMS. And dont get me wrong I’m excited to play ARMS but THAT GAMES NOT EVEN OUT YET (and before anyone brings up “Injustice 2 isn’t out either” just know that in my book that game can go fuck itself for about the same reason. BUT EVEN THEN, that game at least has a known community that will come out and play it). We don’t even know what community, if any, is gonna come out for ARMS, by that point, since it’ll be coming out 1-3 months before EVO (I’d remind you that ARMS doesn’t even have a set release date. Just “Spring 2017″), that game isn’t even gonna have any real advanced tech discovered yet, if there even is any to discover. Not that any of those stand a chance at winning at this point but the fact that they were included kinda pisses me off. I can kind of see Windjammers since a lot of the FGC likes that game but Nidhogg? Do most of yall even remember that game? And ARMS? REally?
I know someone’s gonna be like, “Well the last donation drive had Divekick, and Fighting is Magic”. And I was one of the first people to say that FiM was probably the weakest, meme-ist option put up there but you know, that was happened because the FGC is filled with trolls. If you remember, the only games that made the donation drive were games that got at least 500 votes on the Facebook poll and I’m pretty confident that 490 of FiM’s votes were trolls being trolls. And at least in Divekick’s defense, that game was made by a dude from that community, for the community. Divekick is basically one massive FGC in joke anyway so if Divekick had made it, it basically would’ve been a big thank you to one of the FGC’s own.
But I think what makes me the most upset about the whole situation isn’t even just that Marvel might not get the proper sendoff that it deserves, but that it’s Swan Song stands a strong chance of being snatched away by Pokken. And just, let’s review Pokken for a sec.
First off, this was the game that was being removed from Japanese arcades in droves because nobody gave enough of a shit to play it. And we’re talking about a culture that loves both Pokemon AND fighting games, and they wanted absolutely nothing to do with that game.
And then, when it came stateside, those of yall that watched tournaments saw that pretty much ever ad breakthere was a little vingette for Pokken. They tried their hardest to get people to actually care about this game, and yet... you pratically had to dig through the Twitch trenches just to find Pokken tournaments. People weren’t watching, and people weren’t entering. Then it got to EVO because Nintendo money, and it had one of the lowest entrants and viewer rates of any of the games there.
Then post EVO, a lot of majors didn’t even run the game because people weren’t entering or watching. And speaking of Nintendo, I would remind you that Nintendo themselves have since dropped Pokken from their Pokemon Championship Series. So not even the parent company gives a fuck about the game at this point.
So with all that being said, never in a million years did I think that Marvel would be neck and neck with Pokken. KI, maybe. MKX, maybe. Shit I figured even Windjammers had a better shot than Pokken and yet here we are.
And you might wonder where the fuck the money is coming from if nobody gives a shit about Pokken. Simple, its coming from Smashers (and you can go check smash websites, most of them are advocating super hard for Pokken), and people who are just fans of Pokemon and will throw money at anything Pokemon. And look I love Pokemon too. It’s top 3 favorite Nintendo franchise and might be top 5 favorite franchises of all time. But I have no doubt in my mind that a lot of the people throwing money at this, barely know what EVO is, probably don’t even know the dates of EVO, and have 0 intentions of watching that game at EVO much less showing up to play the game. Case in point, Shofu is out here on Twitter advocating and donating to this game, and you would think that Shofu, who runs one of the biggest Pokemon related YouTube channels, would probably have a lot of Pokken content right? Well guess when the last time he even posted a video about the game was. I’ll save you the search, it was 6 months ago. One of these videos were, ironically enough, entitled “time to come back”. And then there were two more videos within the same time span, and he hasn’t touched the game since.
And this is kind of the additude that I’m talking about. I read a tweet earlier that summed it up perfectly. About how people never want to watch or come out to support Pokken, and then want to wonder why there aren’t any Pokken tournaments. That game died forever ago. You might even argue that that game was dead on arrival but even if you don’t, then you have to agree that there hasn’t been a game that died out quicker than Pokken did. For all the shit people gave SFxT at least that game lasted a couple of years as opposed to about 3 months. And at least that game had some potential at release, instead of being booted from Japanese arcades Y’all are throwing money at this game and I have no doubt in my mind that it’s going to once again have abyssmal turnout/viewership.
And that’s to me, is the most upsetting thing. That Marvel stands a shot of being robbed by a game that people don’t actually care about, but has a fanbase that will throw money at anything with Pikachu’s face on it. If it were KI, I wouldn’t be super happy, but it would be ok. MKX, kinda upset because I hate that game but you know what, fine. Or even Skullgirls which to me would be best case scenario, if your top two games were SG and Marvel because easily and measurably those two deserve it. Skullgirls is a fantastic game with an ultra dedicated community that only got treated like shit by EVO. I have no doubt in my mind that had SG’s won the last donation drive that game would be one of the biggest in the FGC right now and might even still to this day be a mainstay at EVO. And so if *any* game was gonna be Marvel, I’d wish it to be Skullgirls. But at least I can say of any of the games I mentioned above, people would come out to play it, and support it. In the example of MKX, it would be the exact same people that would be playing Injustice but fuck, at least it’s *someone*.
And I know someone’s gonna be like “well what did you ever do for Marvel?” and yeah, I’ve never been to a major, because I don’t have money like that. But at least every time there is something local for the game, I go out and play. I took time off of work and drove an hour out one time just to get 0-2′d in Marvel on a couple of occasions, but at least I went out there. And I’m out here watching the streams, watching the VoDs; 90% of my “watch later” playlist is Marvel shit that I didn’t get to watch live.
And with that said, yeah I’ll admit that a bit of it is personal for me. Marvel is absolutely my favorite game out there right now. Without Marvel 3 I probably would not care about EVO and the FGC as a whole. But that’s why I don’t want to see it get robbed of a proper sendoff by a game that’s just gonna die out again the minute EVO is over.

Should the Chicago Bears sign Kareem Hunt?
Running back Kareem Hunt is arguably the most talented free agent currently on the market. He’s only 23-years old, he was the 2017 rushing champ, and he has averaged 110 yards from scrimmage in his 27 game career.
With with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, Hunt’s offensive coordinator was current Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy, and Hunt’s skill set was a perfect match for their (his) scheme and he was selected to the Pro Bowl. He was having an even better year in 2018 with K.C., and that’s where the “football” part of Hunt’s story ends.
Hunt was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list on November 30, 2018, following a video surfacing of him shoving and kicking a woman almost a year ago (February, 2017). The Chiefs released him shortly thereafter for lying about the incident when they were made aware of it.
Another assault accusation surfaced after the video was made public pertaining to an incident in January of 2017, and a third incident called a “minor altercation,” came up from June of 2017.
Many Bears’ fans have expressed an interest in Chicago signing Hunt for the 2019 season after Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace were asked about Hunt at their end of the season press conference. Neither shot down the possibility, so it naturally got fans thinking.

Signing a player that has struck a woman is a non-starter for many people, but judging by the chatter on social media and sports talk radio, many fans are willing to give Hunt a second chance.
Nagy talked about his belief in giving a player a second chance at the presser, but he also said the team hasn’t had any official discussions about signing Hunt.
Bears Chairman George McCaskey made the media rounds earlier today, and the Kareem Hunt topic again came up. Much like Nagy and Pace, McCaskey didn’t shut the door on the possibility of the Bears signing Hunt once he’s removed from the exempt list, and when asked if the Bears would pursue him he said, “We’re not there yet.”
He also confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that there have been no internal discussions about adding Hunt. “Ryan (Pace) hasn’t said anything to me about Kareem Hunt. And Matt (Nagy) hasn’t said anything to me about Kareem Hunt.”
Hunt started to attend alcohol and anger management counseling in December, and he addressed his issues and apologized in an ESPN interview.
The league office will likely suspend him once he’s off the exempt list, but he’ll need to first prove to them his troubles are in the past.

“I think the important thing, as Matt pointed out,” McCaskey said, “is that he addresses his personal situation before worrying about football. I think that’s a demonstration of the kind of guy Matt is. He called him to have a non-football conversation because they had a player-coach relationship. I think that says a lot about Matt. He’s not just interested in these guys as football players. I think that’s one of the reasons the players respond to him so well.”
Nagy knows Hunt very well after coaching him for a year, and his recommendation will no doubt carry a lot of weight.
I gave my thoughts on Hunt signing in Chicago on my T Formation Podcast, but I’ll share the abridged version here.
If it was my call to make, if I were the Chicago Bears’ Chairman, I’m not signing Kareem Hunt. That’s just my personal feelings on the subject. I’m talking a pass on a man that strikes a woman.
However, if the Bears do add him a a free agent, it wont stop me from cheering for my favorite team. I’ve always looked at professional sports as a job. It’s a high paying job, but it’s a job nonetheless. Unless there’s a reason Hunt can’t work (i.e. he’s in jail) then I see no reason why a team can’t hire him. I’d just rather it not be my favorite team, but I have a suspicion it will be.
I asked a few of my colleagues to give me their take on the Bears signing Hunt and I’ll share their responses here.

This truly is a signing which represents opposite sides of the spectrum.
On one hand, this signing would put the Chicago Bears into a strong position at winning the Super Bowl; Kareem is precisely the type of back Matt Nagy is looking for in his offense. What’s more important, is Matt Nagy has already voiced his support for Hunt on not one, but two different occasions. In his philosophy, his mind, he (likely) believes Hunt deserves a second chance. Ryan Pace seems to have placed his full trust with Nagy, as he too didn’t rule out the possibility of signing Hunt. Mitchell Trubisky, for what it’s worth, has a close relationship with Hunt as well.
On the other hand, this is a public relations disaster that could ruin the Bears before the start of the season. The outrage will be fierce and relentless. The media, in all likelihood, would treat the Bears like the evil empire. Hunt’s actions are completely unacceptable, strictly from my own opinion. Never mind the fact he was caught unleashing violence on his girlfriend/ex/friend/whatever; he straight up lied about his involvement and investigation to the Kansas City Chiefs’ organization. He’s highly likely to be suspended at the start of the season, it’ll take an unprecedented miracle for him to escape the matter unscathed. It doesn’t matter if the charges were dropped, he’ll receive a firm hand from the NFL for the culmination of events.
As it stands, I do not support the idea of signing Kareem Hunt, from both a business and personal perspective. I will concede, though, I am human. I have no right to judge any person based on their life and their actions. There is not a single ounce of divine blood or nobility running in my veins. If Kareem is serious about earning the privilege of signing with the Chicago Bears, then let the man earn that right for himself. He’s been attending anger management classes, he’s been seeking help from numerous people. And, unlike a certain Kicker who resides in Chicago, he’s not playing the victim nor making a media tour about himself.
It’s a good possibility that a team will sign Hunt despite his baggage, and I see the Bears as a major player in that sweepstakes. I definitely do not like this idea whatsoever. However, I must place my emotions to the side, and think about everyone else’s perspective. If the entire franchise gets behind him, if Hunt proves that he can (somehow) be trusted again, and if he balls out; I will support him just like anyone else who plays for the Chicago Bears. This signing would by far be the biggest risk Ryan Pace has ever taken in his career, and this is an even bigger risk for Matt Nagy and his career. All I can and will do, is sit back, and watch what happens.

I think everyone knows my stance on it by now, but I’ll offer up the Cliffs Notes. Basically, Kareem Hunt isn’t Zeke Elliot or Saquon Barkley. He’s just a back that fits that system well, similarly to how Jordan Howard fit the Fox/Gase/Loggains system well. He’s well rounded, meaning he’s pretty good at about everything, but not GREAT at anything. Backs like that can be found on day 2 or 3 of the draft (Hunt was drafted in the 3rd round himself). So why bring in Hunt, and the baggage that comes with him, when you can find someone who can do the same things in this offense in the 3rd or 4th round?
Obviously the draft is something of a gamble, but Pace has a pretty good track record in the middle rounds. That’s why I never got the push to bring him in. Kareem Hunt wasn’t some kind of steal in the 3rd. That’s just where guys like him go. Let Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy continue to build through the draft, find their own guy, benefit from the rookie contract, and avoid the controversy that this team doesn’t need or want.

Hunt fits the offense to a T, but he’s not a “star” RB so much as he’s a “really good system RB.” It’s frankly why I think there won’t be too much of a market for him. He obviously doesn’t fit in a smash scheme and he’s not fast enough for a pure speed scheme so he’s only going to succeed in a West Coast Offense. He’s a walking PR nightmare that would make our team the villain in the eyes of the press. I, personally, don’t want that and would rather find an equivalent back in the draft and get all 4 years of cheap production. It only bolsters that argument that our current draft picks are right in the strike zone for quality running backs.
Ken Mitchell
There are a lot of really, really good backs that we can draft that come without the baggage Hunt has.
Hunt may be a great player, but the running back position is one where there are many options out there.
I’m going to take a hard pass on Hunt.

I’d rather not sign Kareem Hunt. I know myself well enough not to make any proclamation that I wouldn’t root for the team anymore, but I’d be very upset. There’s similar, if not better talent available if the team is able to scout it properly. I get the whole second chances thing and his previous relationship with Nagy but it’s just not worth it to me. I think that Ryan Pace and George McCaskey should’ve learned from the Ray McDonald signing. It only takes one slip up to be wearing egg on their faces. I’d like to see more proof that Hunt’s rehabilitated himself than just completing some courses and saying he’s moved on or bettered himself.
Sitting out games and talking isn’t enough. Talk about maturity or ‘mistakes’ all you want, but the fact is that plenty of players go out and get drunk or party or whatever and don’t end up assaulting people. There’s serious issues there that go beyond just ‘one night, one mistake.’ Pace and Nagy should know that the player they see in the facility during the day might not be the same person that’s out at the club or in the hotel at 4 a.m.
This locker room has been built on guys that are obsessed, right? Is Hunt really obsessed? Can you really imagine hearing that Trubisky or Cohen or Mack were at a hotel in the middle of the night, drunk and arguing with someone? It seems improbable, given what we know and what we’ve seen. We can’t say the same for Hunt.

He-yo.... I'm guessing any young newly qualified driver out there would of already found out is the shear cost of getting yer car insured. I know as I'm 18, male which supposedly makes me high risk so the cheapest insurance I got was 3820 and that's only for third party, and the car is only a 1.2 litre Renault Clio. My instructor mentioned that he heard a scheme that's being done for young new drivers, companies called: Young Banana & Young Marmalade The idea is that these companies have merged together with insurance companies to fill a gap in the market which is us young drivers. The scheme is that you buy a new car or a nearly new car with these guys and the car will come with affordable insurance. I had a look at it and decided to get a quote just out of interest with a new car. So I selected the nearly new car category and went with the new shaped Renault Clio. You can select to buy the car straight away or get it financed over a period of months with 60 being the longest, I got 150 monthly payment as the average which is just payment for the car. The first years insurance came as 1635, (got all excited and jumping, over - reacting) provided that your parents have a good record they are added to the policy for free. I was thinking that it was too good to be true, new car, affordable insurance. But then could be too good of a deal to go without some hidden catches. I dunno what makes me suspicious about these sites but the more I investigate into it the more I feel that this could become quite expensive. I got a Notice of Determination in the mail from Florida Unemployment Compensation. Section 2 states: Benefits are payable because: The discharge was for reason other than misconduct. Section 3 states: The employer is not chargeable since the employment was in the base period. The last job I had I only had for 3 weeks. The job I had before that, I had for three years. Before the Notice of Determination I received Wage Transcript and Determination It says I am eligible and states my weekly benefit amount and when my benefit year begins and ends.
