Bunny’s Moral Crisis and Julian being Anti Judeo-Christian
I was positive I got the impression, during my first read of TSH, that Bunny was truly morally bothered by the farmer-killing. Then I started wondering, post-reading, if I was being too generous, and Bunny legit was just worried for his life and was angry that the group was keeping secrets from him (that second one is what Henry told Richard).
But I got to the part in my on-and-off listening to the audiobook where Julian tells Richard he’s wondering what’s going on with Bunny. Julian says Bunny keeps approaching him and asking to talk about morality (particularly sin and forgiveness). Julian says he’s getting concerned that Bunny may convert to Marion’s religion. He asks Richard what denomination she is, and Richard says he thinks she’s Presbyterian. Julian is disappointed and says the only Christian denomination he can gracefully accept losing a student to is Roman Catholic.
Now this scene is interesting to me for a couple reasons. Firstly, it does indicate there may be more going on with Bunny internally than the Greek class gives him credit for. If Bunny is trying to approach Julian privately to talk about ethical dilemmas, this shows some level of genuineness in his questions (Julian also believes it to be earnest questioning). But secondly, Julian’s comment about only finding the Roman rite to be a worthy foe is so, so interesting to me.
The scene shows that something more is going on with Bunny, but it also reveals that Julian hates Judaism and Christianity— making exceptions for people like Dante and Giotto. The thing that’s fascinating to me about this detail is that Julian’s statements show the central theme of the whole book: that beauty is worth something if it’s backed by things of substance (Georges Laforgue says this, and the same thing is said by Theo in The Goldfinch. This is a concept important to Tartt’s writing).
Julian has a basic respect for Catholics, because Catholicism traditionally also has emphasis on art, philosophy, and classical aesthetic beauty. And, perhaps most importantly, Roman Catholics have kept Latin as the language of the Church and Vatican. The medieval Catholic Church was perhaps the biggest patron and commissioner of artists, and from the Catholic Church came Notre Dame, Aquinas, Dante, etc. Here, Julian mentions that the Catholics make “worthy foes” for the pagans, and what he means is that there’s all this aesthetic beauty and classical study within the Catholic Church. But it’s key here that Julian hates other branches of Christianity. The scene emphasizes that the only thing he enjoys about Catholics is their specifically classical history.
The thing I like about this detail is that it is a really specific bit of characterization to show that Julian does not care about morality or the search for truth that’s at the heart of all religions and mythologies. He’s different from people like Aquinas because he does not see human art and language as a means to articulate and pay homage one’s moral beliefs. He sees art/language as the highest good in and of itself. Once you remove the classics aspects of Catholicism, Julian does not care. And we see this because of his apparent disdain for Protestants and Jews. This also reminds me of Bunny saying Henry thinks Jamaicans have no culture. Obviously, they do, but it’s not the particular kind of culture and expression Julian and Henry find legitimate.
I guess I like how Donna Tartt understands her own theme and can show how it’s applicable so naturally just in the way her characters talk. We get a lot of hints about how closed-minded and shallow Julian actually is before we get to the end of the book where it’s confirmed.

god I wish I could rip Instagram apart with my teeth I hate it I hate it I hate it
#kibumblabs#whenever I think about it and what it does (in general but mostly to artists) I go into a feral anti-capitalist blind rage#it is legitimately killing art. it is killing what it means to be an artist and replacing it with corporate brainrot#and it’s disgusting to me to think about kids going into art and getting brainwashed into believing you should sacrifice agency over your#time and what you create and etc in order to create a Brand is the most important thing– or rather a DEFINING thing– about being an artist#it’s just. god it makes me mad#I won’t even get into how it also rips your mental health to shreds and strips your ego and ability to enjoy what you do and etc#but you know. there’s that too#I could write a fucking essay on this man and maybe I should at some point honestly#what’s sad though is that the Instagram art account mentality is already so normalized and so in-line with how companies/corporations like#disney or blizzard or basically any animation/game company and whatnot work that it’s easy to have that mindset reinforced by comparison to#those ‘legitimate’ non-freelance jobs#like that’s how they do it at fucking riot games or whatever so it must be the Right Way To Do Art. constantly and painfully by everyone#else’s standards but your own. no! it’s not! stop sucking the industry’s dick and look up for a second#and yes that applies to freelancers because like I said this new freelance art mentality directly corresponds with how corporate art jobs#operate. just. think about it on an existential long-term level. you shouldn’t fucking waste your life for that shit#sorry I’m kinda spiraling cause it’s such a personally relevant topic especially with recently stepping out of art school and debating if#I’ll return or not next semester and all that because yeah my school is a direct pipeline into The Industry and thus it operates like#The Industry. and I thought that was something that’s a pro when I was going into this school but boy. it really hits you when you’re#slogging away worked to the point of carpal tunnel/wrist problems being a normal and accepted thing being expected to sacrifice your#physical and mental health and so on just#oh! this is going to be my life from now on. forever. this isn’t temporary to get a degree this is a model of the industry im being injected#into and if anything it’s just going to get worse staying in this pipeline. Don’t Forget You’re Here Forever#and yeah I just. how do you continue under those conditions and expectations?#I don’t know what I’m gonna do yet man- I’m gonna get a bachelors it just may be at a state college instead– but beyond that idk but it’s#become too taxing on my time and health to just say ‘it is how it is’ and do something that’ll kill me slowly for a company’s profit.#something something marx was right something something

The canvases aren’t even safe 😭 they used the Boroque era as reference for their search engines. Like I’m losing my shit constantly over ai art so bad. Like this is totally gonna be a rant so forgive me but it’s driving up the WALLS. Ai art being readily available is killing the incentive for people to be creative. I cannot tell you how many times I think I’ve found a really cool fellow artist on tiktok and then see #midjourney. I take psychic damage every time that happens to me. And I’m starting to see it infiltrating business too where they generate ai images instead of hire photographers. I also saw someone selling tshirts with ai art on it at my local farmers market. MOTHERFUCKER THE FARMERS MARKET??? HAVE YOU NO SHAME????
NAW PREACH IT cause its become a nagging issue for me for a while that i simply try to not think about and dwell on but dear FUCKING god is it everywhere and it's painfully obvious too! just about every ad takes me 3 seconds to find damning evidence that its ai and im 99% ready to just delete facebook bc #1 i dont give a fuck abt anyone on there anymore and #2 Literally every other post is the most deplorable ai shit ive ever seen that everyone is carelessly oblivious to i mean total abominations that don't make any sense as an image but ppl share bc its the most bottom of the barrel ''relatable'' shit and that's just the sad reality of it is most people don't even give a shit what they're looking at as long as it looks pretty to their eyes for 3 seconds they don't give a damn
and that's just on basic everyday world shit like u said there's so many mfs i think are decent artists where i legitimately cant tell its ai until i read their fuckshit bio or somethin, like that midjourney i didnt even know it was an ai program i would've just thought it was the name of a video game or some shit! like I feel like I'm kinda turning my back on the whole art community involuntarily bc i just dont trust any image i see most of the time and its fukkin sad i ESPECIALLY feel for the real artists prior to this shitshow who have art styles that now look so much like ai that they basically hijacked to feed the machine like I couldn't imagine spending thousands of dollars on an art college and hours of practice just for your art style to be The Blueprint for empty soulless photos cranked out at inhuman rates by any stupid fucking lazy ass clown like Fuck Man it all sucks so much and the worst part is I just feel like it's one of those things where it will not stop until Something caves and i honestly dont know which one it will be but i just know its only going to get worse idk i try to remember that i can pick up a paintbrush or even whatever the hell i want and make something beautiful while 98% of these ai sacks of shit are just limited to stealing other peoples art on the internet and they couldn't even paint a damn flower if their lives depended on it and if i was stuck on a deserted island I'd probably still find ways to make art with whatever tools and resources i have cause that's an artist baybay but as far as The Internet and its grasp it has on the world and trying to make it as a digital artist and trying to make money from your homemade artwork is very grim man and dont even get me started on art and artists in just about every job field rn my heart goes out to them

Tails in IDW #54
Okay, I'm sorry, I can't wait. I've gotta talk about Tails in issue #54 and how far he's come and how I will never NOT be on my "he's a hero, not a sidekick" bullshit after this. I'm going to put it under a cut though, in case you haven't read the issue yet / don't want to be spoiled. You can always come back to check it out later! Until then—
So as we saw in the preview pages, we start with this:
Tumblr media
I feel like most people know this, but in case you don't: canonically, Tails has a phobia of lightning. Thunder too, in a way, since thunder accompanies lightning, but this is the big one. I don't think we're ever given a specific reason; my headcanon is that lightning was involved in whatever killed his parents, though he doesn't remember it. But it could also be something as simple as "the higher you are, the more likely you are to be struck, and since Tails flies, he has a fear." That's reasonable.
But either way, when asked about whether Surge and Kit having powers that directly relate to Sonic and Tails' biggest fears, the IDW writers said that it was indeed intentional. (It might have been Ian who said this? It was either him or Evan, can't remember which.) Meaning that the writers and artists absolutely had that in mind during this issue, so Tails cringing here on the very first page as he lifts Sonic out of harm's way as best he can is not just because he does tire pretty quickly when carrying Sonic around, but because he is literally facing his biggest phobia in the worst way as he does so. Because this isn't just a random lightning strike; Surge is controlling the lightning and she is targeting him, trying to knock him out of the sky. And then, what do you know—she succeeds!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tails gets straight up electrocuted and stunned. And as cute as his little dizzy eyes art is, being electrocuted like that is no joke. Sonic get hit with the brunt force of Surge's attack, but it looks like any shocks that hit him were incidental. Tails' whole body is lit up, and he was shocked badly enough that he let go of Sonic's hands, which then allowed Surge to make the collision. His worst nightmare come true, basically.
But does he let that stop him? Does he cower and beg for someone to save him? Nope.
Tumblr media
After Whisper loses Cyan to Surge, Tails holds her back from getting herself electrocuted just moments before. (And side note, but he has to literally full-body hug her to hold her back . . . he's so little.) But as he tells her, he's not giving up! Yes, Surge is scary af. Yes, she's weaponizing his greatest fear. But the city being destroyed aside, Whisper's family was taken from her. Sonic is hurt, and can't defend himself well. Like, legitimately, right before Whisper sent Cyan to Sonic's aid:
Tumblr media
His knee is shot. He can still move on it, but not well at all. Certainly not well enough to hold Surge off for long. By contrast, his recent electrocution aside, Tails is doing all right. He can still move. And despite how afraid he must be, he's got a plan. And what a plan it is!!
After getting Sonic to lure Surge to an appliance store, Tails uses all the appliances in the basement to drain her power. Basically, causing a power surge, lol. And side note, but this bit right here—
Tumblr media
—not to talk about my own works, but it reminded me of what I literally just wrote, wherein Sonic apologized in advance for having to knock AU!Tails out. :') Brothers.
Tails' plan works, but the thing about power surges is that they aren't gentle. They can explode and cause fires. And when that's about to happen (and I imagine Tails has some experience with this due to his workshop lol), what do we get?
Tumblr media
Again, lightning is Tails' greatest fear, he has a phobia of it . . . yet here, when stray shocks of electricity are coming off Surge, it's Tails who pushes Sonic behind him, Tails who tackles Sonic out of the way. Again, Sonic is injured; he can move and he can run, but it's difficult. So Tails airlifting him or knocking him out of the way is not a big surprise in that context. But Tails is literally putting himself between Sonic and his own biggest phobia right here, facing his fear not just for himself, but to protect his big bro!! Look how far this baby has come!! This is a huge moment!!
But whoopsie-daisy, who should appear on the scene but the traumatized little boy who was led to believe that his toxic big sister was dead :') And remember how I mentioned earlier that Surge and Kit were designed with Sonic and Tails' biggest fears in mind? Tails' phobia is lightning. Sonic's is water, and drowning. And so when Kit arrives, and discovers that Sonic (unintentionally) lied to him . . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kit doesn't dish the same, cold, sadistic drowning statistic / threat that he gave to Tails back when their first encounter happened (because he's far more furious here), but his intention is still pretty clear. He has as much control over water as Surge does over lightning, and he is directly targeting Sonic, who, again . . . has a fear of water, phobia of drowning. But Tails, seeing what's happening (and having been down this road with Kit before) immediately jumps in the way, and uses his tails to disperse the water. Which is a pretty cool trick tbh!! It makes you wonder if perhaps he's done something like this before—if Eggman ever targeted Sonic with the robotic equivalent of a giant fire hose (lol), and Tails learned to deflect bursts of water as a result, to cover for Sonic in situations like this. But then again, Sonic looks pretty shocked in that art above . . . and here:
Tumblr media
Like "bro are you seriously taking hits for me right now??" (side note, but Kit asking Sonic, "why would you bother with me, you already have him" is just :( like I fully expected it, but still. ouch.)
And then we get . . . the best most important panel of them all:
Tumblr media
Setting aside for a moment how Sonic is a bit panicked about the danger that Tails has put himself in (although we will talk about that more in a second), how many times have we seen this, but reversed? We've seen it over
Tumblr media
and over
Tumblr media
and over
Tumblr media
and over again
Tumblr media
Obviously Sonic trusts Tails to back him up in a fight, obviously he's fine with Tails helping him, but when things get really, really dangerous, Sonic protects him. He has kind of a "do as I say, not as I do" approach when it comes to this, where it's fine for him to be in life-threatening danger, but he really doesn't like it when Tails is. Push comes to shove, when things get really bad he'd prefer if Tails was somewhere safe. And this exact gesture, holding out a hand to shield Tails behind him / tell Tails to stay back, is one we see repeated throughout the series.
But here, it's flipped! Sonic is telling him not to—he quite literally yells, "Tails, no!"—but Tails pays this no mind. Water is Sonic's biggest fear, drowning is his phobia. And Tails has faced Kit before, Tails knows how to handle it. So this time, he's the one holding out a hand to shield Sonic, he's the one gesturing for Sonic to stay back, he's the one saying "I got this." Danger level is currently at a point where he needs Sonic off the front lines, and he's the one taking point. And Sonic does not like it (and I don't think Sonic will ever like it tbh, it's a big brother thing), but that's the way it's just gonna be right now as far as Tails is concerned and I mcfucking love it.
(Back to Sonic's perception of the danger: It might seem weird that Sonic was fine with Tails airlifting him during the Surge fight, when she was firing lightning at them, but panics when Tails goes up against someone who can drown him, but this makes sense to me for two reasons. One, on the most basic level, lightning is not Sonic's biggest fear. Obviously being electrocuted is no fun and he is not a fan, but it doesn't set off the panic alarm in his brain that water does. He can get shocked by lightning and get back on his feet pretty quickly; the same can't be said if he's got water being forced into his lungs at a rapid kip. So even though Surge had wisps and Eggman's tech powering her, I think that on a base, primal level, he's more immediately worried about Kit because Kit is the one weaponizing his greatest fear.
On a more story-centric level though, they really didn't have a choice. Surge's speed was manufactured to rival Sonic's own, and he's got a leg injury. He's not fighting her at full power. They can't just leave, because that would leave the citizens in danger (plus she stole Whisper's wisps and Whisper is their friend), but also Sonic can't really fight her on the ground. I don't think he wanted Tails to be in that situation, I think if he could have had it any other way he would have—but in the moment it was the only plan they had, until Tails came up with another one. So that's why I think he was like "we have to keep it up" versus his clear "get out of here" that we see in the basement when Kit attacks him.)
Of course, Surge wakes up and Kit carries her off and that whole bit is also very sweet and sad and tragic and heartwarming—but really, I am just so, so fucking proud of Tails here. He seriously saved the day in this whole issue. Yeah, Surge did get a good hit on him—she was using lightning and he was in the sky, of course she hit him—but who was the one who came up with the plan to stop her? Tails. Who implemented the plan? Tails. Who squared off against Kit when he showed up and reacted exactly the way everyone knew he was going to? Tails. "Sidekick" my damn ass, he deserves the hero label just like Amy and Cream and everyone else in the comic. A sidekick is someone who assists a hero, who reports to them and ultimately answers to them. The hero is in charge, the sidekick is not. But that's really not the case here! Yes, Sonic looks out for Tails—but Tails looks out for Sonic, too. Sonic counts on him as an equal partner, and so calling him a "sidekick" just doesn't feel right. I love the IDW comics, but "tech-savvy sidekick" is always going to annoy tf out of me, lmao.
Anyway. Super proud of Tails. He shined in this whole issue. He deserves the whole entire world, or at least a bowl of mint choco chip ice cream. I hope when all this is said and done, he gets some.
Can't wait for issue #55!!

ITS ME ITS ME IM GLONK
I HAVE ANOTHER SIREN IDEA
So: i was learning about art forgery earlier this year, and my professor was mentioning how because of the elitism in the art world, some artists are forced to turn to forgery because no one will pay large amounts of money for art that doesn't have a famous name/history attached to it. SO they'll copy other people's artstyles and say they found this "Leonardo Da Vinci" work in some abandoned attic somewhere and sell it (now obviously because DaVinvi is so famous, it would be pretty hard to sell that lie, but you know what I mean. maybe a buttersworth painting. idk).
...And you can launder money with art forgeries: somebody could buy a forgery with money achieved through nefarious means (dirty money), then resell it for the same (or a higher) price. Now they have the same amount/more money, but it was achieved through legitimate means so its harder to track down/make a case against it in court.
Anyway: The Syndicate catches some broke ass college student on their territory, but they are a damn quick thinker and say that they have connections in crime to spare themselves. The student tells them that they have contact with this guy Anonymous, who provides art forgeries that the Syndicate can then sell and keep their money trail clean (especially useful, when in their civilian disguise. all that money is suspicious...). What the student ISN'T telling them is that they aren't just the middleman for Anonymous' works, they ARE Anonymous (because, if the Syndicate got sick of them and knew that there was only just one person involved in the business, they could just kill that one person. But if they think there's multiple, they'd have to keep the student alive to get to Anonymous).
Maybe Siren finds out that its the student who is doing the paintings, and they bond over their artistic interests; him being a musician, them being a painter.
Or, ALTERNATE SCENARIO: There IS a mafia that the Syndicate is dealing with, and the mafia agrees to set them up with one of their greatest contributors. Obviously Siren is sent to talk with this mysterious associate-- since he's very persuasive-- and instead of finding some shady, powerful crimelord, he finds a worn out, paint-splattered college student wearing J O R T S in a shitty apartment. they don't even react when they see him they're just used to it at this point.
i might un-anonymize myself soon idk

GLONK YOUR BRAIN IS HUGE OH MY GOD
firstly, always feel free to spam my inbox with ideas, they make me happy to see and i love coming home or having a minute to read through them and reading it like the daily paper, it’s my favorite part of the day
secondly!!!!! AHHHH okay the whole thing abt hiding the fact that this broke college student is actually like an amazing art dealer and like potentially dangerous is so juicy. like
student: “yeah, Anonymous is crazy. they once stabbed someone and used their blood to sign a painting because it was the only color they could get to match a specific red tone that Van Gogh used” knowing damn well it was actually their own blood because they cut their finger opening up a box of new paints, causing the red to splatter on the floor
siren: “wow… this Anonymous person must be dangerous. how are you so calm around them? not to sound rude… but you dont strike me as the fighting type”
student: *think fast think fast, i cant let them know i make most of the forgeries or that i am Anonymous* “we’re lovers”
siren: “what.”
i feel like techno would be the first one to figure it out, and wilbur would be dead last. techno knew the minute he met you but just kept quiet about it, phil realized when he monitored your activity for a day and noticed how you’d be mimicking famous artists, tommy realized because student told him, and wilbur didn’t believe it for a second until he literally showed up to a meeting Anonymous had set up, watched as they tried to kidnap them, resulting in their mask being knocked off and siren was like OH FUCKIN SHIT OH NO
but i also love the second alternate part bc siren’s heard all these stories about anonymous’s ability to replicate artists exactly and how skilled they are, and then student opens the door and is just like “okay. siren is here. totally normal.”
siren’s like “i need you to do something for me”
student just scoffs “yeah? you’re going to have to wait, i have to finish a painting for my niece. she asked me to paint her favorite barbie doll” fully serious and siren is just like ??????? and considers using his voice but is just curious and wants to watch you work so just sits back and watches.
also LOVE the concept of the anteater paintings. wilbur is just staring around in anger and annoyance and student is just there, grinning evilly and watching bc they know he wont say anything about it so it’s funny.

I think BATDR has good themes as a foundation, but just doesn't build on them enough. Like, its main theme is legacy and destiny, and we have 3 big players that feed into this: Audrey Drew, Joey's magnum opus; 'Wilson' Arch, Nathan's forgotten son, and Bendy - Joey's most pivotal and yet hated creation. These 3 could function as wonderful foils to each other, like how Audrey and Bendy already do, but the problems are that:
1) Wilson isn't given enough backstory early on to make him more dimensional than 'crusty old man with a mean streak', and
2) Audrey doesn't have enough backstory to make her choices have weight.
For Wilson, we know that Nathan neglected him, but why? Was it for something out of his control (he's blind in one eye - did Nathan hate to have an 'imperfect' son) or in his control (I've seen a theory that he was a terrible business man, which would of course make Nathan embarrassed)?
Whatever it is, we should have had more tapes/notes about their dynamic, which would have been reflected in how Wilson treats the Ink World.
(an aside about the blindness thing - I think there could be merit to this angle, but Wilson's design is already a little ableist, since his scar and glass eye are just there to say 'oh no! spooky disfigured man has come to bad things to you!', it would have to be approached with care, caution, and advice from a disabled sensitivity reader)
Wilson could also project onto Audrey, if we give them a deeper relationship than 'creepy coworker that trapped me in this hellscape'. What if they have a sort of mentor/mentee relationship? They often work the nightshift in tandem, and Wilson has an artistic streak. You could very easily go with 'polite grandpa who gives art tips whenever he passes by' route, and Audrey accepts him as the father figure she apparently doesn't remember (still don't understand how Audrey forgot she was Drew's Daughter)
Let this then be reflected in how Audrey interacts with the world; let there be an option to have Wilson-abilties instead of Demon-abilties, with their own rewards and drawbacks. Using these powers sets on you on the Wilson ending.
It also makes his subsequent betrayal of her more impactful. If Audrey comes into the Ink World believing that the Machine twisted Wilson into turning against her, thus giving her a motive beyond simple escape, only to find out that he planned to kill her the whole time, endings where she either is sacrificed or fights him off but succumbs to the ink demon are sadder.
Speaking of Audrey, I think there's a strong enough connection to Joey for the story's 'You were born of darkness, you don't belong to it' thing to stick.
Let her make mistakes! Let her fuck people over! She has a spooky ability that is implied to send people to the most terrible parts of the studio, yet no-one says anything! Her arrival heralds the return of the Ink Demon; I think she should get both adoration and hatred for it, and then the gameplay is reflective of whether she chooses to dig her heels in and accept the darkness or go along with what Wilson says (or if you collect all the memories by completing side quests for NPCs, you get the secret ending where she takes control for herself, which is the ending the game currently has.)
An example of this would be the Lord Amok section. Instead of the Keeper's dropping her in the spider pit, let it be Sammy and some religious rebels, interested to see if she's a legitimate prophet/vessel/chosen one for their Lord. Once she completes that, Sammy gives the player an update on their path:
If Audrey has been mainly using Wilson abilities, the congregation shun her and provide a big hint that Wilson is going to kill her.
If Audrey has been mainly using Demon abilities, they welcome her and try to get her to make this massive ritual work for them, which is a precursor to Bendy's fusion with Audrey.
If Audrey has been completing sidequests and maybe has a unique ability, (something with colour?) Sammy is unsure about her and they have a bit more of a heart to heart.
All of this makes Audrey a more well rounded and sympathetic protagonist, and the ending the game currently has feel earned and impressive.
TL;DR:
The game has good themes but they need to be built on
One way to do this is to flesh out Wilson's daddy issues and thus create a more positive bur ultimately fucked up relationship with Audrey, leading to an ending where it makes sense that she trusts him but is still betrayed
Another way is to give Audrey more choices that have bad consequences but are understandable(a choice between a Wilson abilities path and a Bendy abilities path, changing how the Inkworld perceives her), thus allowing a happy ending (be nice to NPCs and they'll all help you fight of Bendy, like in the actual game) more hard worked for and thus earned.
It's a good point about the game introducing themes and not developing them. Like the whole "not a prequel not a sequel" thing they've been saying for years, but then the game comes out and it's a straightforward sequel?
I did notice them trying to make some small attempts at suggesting that maybe the ink dimension is a different timeline to the real world, with that book by the Gent CEO:
Tumblr media
Except it never goes anywhere, because the time inside and outside the studio is exactly the same, down to the date.
Tumblr media
And even the seeming time loop in BATIM is soft-retconned, because we're told that Joey created Henry before he rekindled his friendship with Allison and created Audrey v1.0, but when Henry walks around Joey's apartment, there's Allison's letter on the wall and Audrey v1.0's voice, so it's not like he went back to the day he was born. Resetting the cycle doesn’t turn back the flow of time, the time goes forward as normal, the ink creatures just suffer an amnesia.
There are some details in the lore, which could be a hint of time shenanigans... but they could just as well be plot holes and reused stock images. Time will tell which it is, but it's looking increasingly like the latter.
I don't even know why they bother giving us so many dates if it's not to make us draw any connections, or question the timeline of events. Like the detail about the studio having two different locations, which was hinted at in the archive previews, but then never comes up in the actual game. I hope they're not under the impression that we care about the dates because we just... like dates, or something... and that's why they keep serving us new ones. I don't care about !!THE LORE!! for the sake of !!THE LORE!!, I care about it because I was told that there is some underlying mystery, which can be solved by looking at !!THE LORE!!. It's a tool. If I can't use it for anything, then I don't have a need for it.
Even SHB announced that he won't be making many Bendy theories. Because the big stuff was explained, and the small stuff now feels like something the creators didn't think too deeply about, and so the fans shouldn't either. So, for the future of the franchise, I hope they will.

talk shop tuesday! you get to talk about music a lot on your blog (and i can't help but to admire how diverse it is!). does music play a part in your artistic process? if so, is it inspired more by lyrics or the tune itself?
Haha, once again thwarted by my inability to shut up. haveyouheardthisband has been a boon to my blog, truly. The trick to having a diverse music taste is to have a friend who knows more about music than you do and will give you recommendations. This has never failed me before.
In general, I usually prefer lyrics to the melody when I'm listening to music, or at the very least I find that interesting lyrics are what turn a good song into a great song. So when I get inspired by a song to make an art piece (which is often) it's because there have been some lyrics rattling around in my head like stones in a rock tumblr.
I have lots of ideas for lyric-based drawings but I haven't quite figured out how I want to set them up, so they're on the back burner for now. I also do NOT have the patience for animatics, so I won't be making any of those anytime soon (but I have edited them before and that was a lot of fun! if anyone has any animatics ideas they want to draw but they don't want to edit them feel free to hit me up)
The two most notable song-based drawings are pieces I used to experiment with some lighting techniques. And I still really like them, so I'm going to brag a little bit. Under the cut!

Starting off with this drawing of Alek! This is an older piece ("older" meaning early 2021) that I still like. It was my blog banner for a loooong time and I stand by that. This drawing was the first time I used multiply and overlay layers for shading, and I wanted to play with colored highlights and shadows, and mixing hard and soft shadows. I think it worked pretty well, especially for my first attempt.
The song associated with this one was Heirloom by Sleeping At Last, which is about generational trauma and escaping cycles. I got really really emotional about the thought of Alek being truly, legitimately happy after the end of the books, which was only possible because he rejected his claim to the throne. "You are so much more than your father's son / you are so much more than the wars you've won" just rattled around nonstop in my brain, and I'm pretty sure I hid the line somewhere in the grass and then blurred it beyond all legibility.
Now that I think about it I should do a redraw of this one
Tumblr media
[ID: a nighttime drawing of Mina, a brown-skinned Aasimar woman cuddling with Halia, a drow elf woman. Both are in their nightclothes and Halia is asleep. Mina has a concerned look on her face.]
This piece is from only a few months ago. Unlike the drawing of Alek, I didnt originally intend for it to be a lighting experiment. This was fully inspired by the song The Crow by Dessa, which is such a Mina song that I couldn't escape it. Specifically, it was inspired by the line "I can't ask you to show love / but would it kill you if you did?" I just really wanted to draw my girl visibly struggling with the mortifying ordeal of being known.
Once the main part of the drawing was done, I started playing around with the night lighting, and I got excited about the idea of showing a street light shining through and casting some shadows on the two. If I had planned it out that way originally I think I would have done some more work to make the shadows follow contours, but for a spur of the moment decision I'm really happy with it.

as a white woman that grew up entirely in the middle east, literal child to woman, i cannot excuse matty’s silence in the slightest. seeing the things that i’ve seen, but living beside, protected by consulates and ambassadors, even when the suffering is right at our doorstep, was fucking terrifying. not for me, but for the people that i wasn’t allowed to help because the people around me saw me as “above it”. if matty truly cared about people, he wouldn’t hesitate to speak out. bottom line. the controversy he has been involved in this year has been on another level, but i don’t see how not getting cancelled is more important than using your platform correctly!!!!!!!!!!! idk it gets me mad that this is what he chooses to be silent over because as we know, the middle east never receives the support or the compassion it deserves.
Omg, I had no idea you grew up in the Middle East! That’s sooo cool!!!
Yeah, exactly. And, the thing is, this isn’t average conflict, or say, some country has passed a bill that may get voted on in some counties or some shit. Where he can legitimately ask himself “is this worth stepping in? Is this the appropriate time to bring it up?” What’s going on right now is not even about religion or politics or whatever. It’s literal genocide. Literal ethnic cleansing. It’s not a dispute. It’s a war crime and a moral tragedy. There are no pros and cons here.
The Al Jazeera reporter whose family was killed by Israel (who admitted on air that their goal was to murder them in order to silence him) said, of last night, “we are not okay. There are body parts everywhere.”
Not even bodies. Body PARTS. So, yeah him “choosing his mental health” is nonsense to me. What about the mental health of the children who are seeing body parts? What about the mental health of the parents who are burying their babies????
And Israel is literally trolling on Twitter?? Have y’all seen their tweets and Greta Thunberg (matty was right, the most punk person ever)? Or their taunting of Bella Hadid? Bro they’re even beefing with the UN online?!!! Branding Palestinians as “the children of darkness” calling us “human animals” while playing victims. But spending $7 million in YouTube Ads to spread propaganda. All of these things are close to Matty’s heart.
Remember the interview where he talked about how every artist has a responsibility to use their platform? And how he called out imagine dragons for branding themselves as “alternative” but never speaking up about anything? Or his little rants about how post-9/11 American music culture became escapist because people didn’t want to fade the real problems going on around them? Or how he always says he can’t sell out because he has kids coming up to him with “love it if we made it” tattoos on their necks and he doesn’t want to let them down? Fuck, even in Singapore he talked about how we don’t have anymore good protest music anymore and now art used to mean something.
Honestly, the more I think about it the more evidence I find for why he SHOULD have said something by now and the less I want to make excuses for him.
It’s making me feel invisible as a fan. I don’t know. Whatever he’s thinking, I hope the silence feels worth it to him. Cuz it’s not feeling that way to me.

Hey, so.
I think you had a point, about NSFW art.
Artistic censorship is a massive issue, and the dwindling places where it can be posted is a real issue. There's a reason that AO3 is such an important website - the same thing happening to NSFW art happened to slash fic. AO3 was created and now it protects NSFW/slash fic from being removed from the internet.
Art needs it's own site like AO3, set up for the purpose of archiving and protecting NSFW art, and not a social media site subject to the whims of advertisers and whoever else is paying the bills.
But using the Burrito Test outside it's context of the institutionalism of disabled people was a misstep.
I don't think you meant to be ableist, at all. I don't think you are. I just don't think you thought about it, or really understood what the Burrito Test means to the disabled community.
It's not an analogy, really, firstly. And it isn't just that it's a legitimate thing, that if you're -not allowed- to exercise your autonomy as an adult to just get up and make a burrito on a whim at 3am, or go to bed when you want, that you're not really living in a care home, you're in an institution, and your "care" is more abou the convenience of abled people than the quality of life of disabled people.
It's that its like a sample of what it is to live as a disabled person. It's like the experience of being disabled concentrated: infantilisation, humiliation, artificial limitations, lack of accessibility, being helpless and vulnerable to the people who are supposed to support us.
Disabled people are angry, and the Burrito Test is like a wound. You said you had a lot of people telling you graphic stories about what it was like for them to be forcibly instituted, so you can see how it's honeslty just a huge source of trauma for some people.
It was a mistake to try and make an equivalent analogy from the Burrito Test. And maybe you didn't know that, and it's unlikely that people who've never heard about it would know why it was a mistake, so you didn't start getting pushback until it came to the attention of the disabled community. And chronic pain causes people to be short-tempered and grumpy, in a way that's really hard to fight against.
I'm not trying to scream at you about it here, and I hope this isn't coming across as condescending, because I don't mean it that way. I'm just trying to show you why it got the enflamed reaction that it got, and explain why using it in that way was wrong, even if you didn't mean to do it.
I think it's easy to forget that people who aren't in the disabled community don't just know about the stuff we talk about all the time. If you wanted to know more, and I know your experiences might have soured you on us, but you could try looking through the cripplepunk tag, if you wanted to, to give you more context, maybe.
You kinda put your finger into a wound you didn't need to poke at with that post, and people lashed out at you.
I don't think you're evil. I don't agree with people telling you to kill yourself or swearing at you. I think you did the right thing pointing out that NSFW art needs a place to be hosted online.
I don't think you would have said what you did if you'd known how sensitive the Burrito Test and it's related topics are to the disabled community, and I don't think I'm wrong about giving you that benefit of the doubt about that. I hope I'm not.
I don't know if that's context and explanation enough for you to understand why your post got the reaction it did, or if you feel inclined to retract and/or apologise, but at least you know.
Drop me a line if you want to talk? IDK.
I don't know man. I get what you're saying, I really do. But at the same time I have friends who are also physically disabled saying, "the way people are treating you here is fucked up, what you said was absolutely fine if you don't take it in deliberate bad faith." I'm not sure I buy that this is the reaction of "the disability community", as it seems to be pretty much relegated to a particular clique who followed crippled-pvp, and given what sort of bile said clique was willing to throw at me, how far they were willing to pervert and distort my words, I don't feel like they are the authoritative source for what lens this should be viewed through.
In fact, I'm not sure that I will trust the judgement of anyone who claims that they way I was treated here was deserved, or that there is an understandable excuse. "People with chronic pain can be angry and are quick to jump on an outlet for that anger" feels like more a condemnation of them than of me. I have understanding and I have empathy, but there's no excuse for treating other people like shit. There's no excuse for using their negative reaction to being treated like shit as further impetus to treat them like shit.
I will accept that for a lot of people that post wasn't helpful, or that the wording could potentially rub them the wrong way. I will apologize for that, but I don't really think that it is particularly my fault either. Enough people have contacted me now and told me that they found the framing I used helpful, or that it validated their own emotions by drawing parallels to when they themselves had been institutionalised, that I don't think it's accurate or fair to point at what I said and call it "wrong" or abstractly ableist, even if I do accept that the misreading people are complaining about was perhaps inevitable as the post blew up.
I also definitely don't think that it is wrong to make comparisons between modes of rhetoric. "Mentioning a thing" and "mentioning the rhetorical mechanism of a thing" aren't in and of themselves crimes or bigotry or whatever else I am supposedly guilty of here. Specific rhetorical ideas are not the claimed territory of any specific community. If I am guilty of anything, it's of not including adequate disclaimers to clarify my meaning, and I loathe the implication that by not doing so I invited this harm.

Quick Caryll headcanons update!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, a few months ago I've made a post where I doodled all Byrgenwerth scholars I could possibly think of, but I've decided to change my ideas a bit in the end! Basically, I turned one character into two! So here is the changed post with the full cast and quick rundown: ( x )
More detail on why the change under cut though!
Long ago, when I just gotten into Bloodborne, my first vision of the character Caryll was of a red haired man who also was an artist. Even in one of those stereotypical berets, all that. Then I learned Caryll was ungendered name, so I opened up to potential of female character instead (really love to have more of those). And it was also around that time when I figured the potential of Caryll as the inspiration for the statue with a stitch on her forehead we see just behind Memory Altar - as well as Witch of Hemwick! We find Runes Workshop tool on a tied up corpse in Hemwick that appears to have bled and surrounded by many paper sheets, that made me think of experimenting on him to find out how many runes can human brain memorize at once before it explodes. Turns out only four, and that's my justification for in lore how everyone knows to not hold more than four in mind at once.
Tumblr media
So for a while she was one of the witches and sole person responcible for runes - both having deciphered language of Great Ones, and then having brain surgery to 'speed up' process of receiving inhuman information! That dramatically shortened her lifespan and thus Old Hunters (and Church's prospectors too) revered her as a great help for their grave robbing- errr, exploration of the Chalice Dungeons! Hence why same statues are in the dungeons too.
Tumblr media
Later though I found out that in Japanese original, character Caryll has legitimately masculine name - Karel, variant of Charles. ( x ) I myself use japanese script a lot but it never occured to me to check kanji of names so that was... a late discovery. Now I check names and titles too and it only was useful (especially with proper name of Kos thing). That didn't sit very well with that super female figure martyr mother teresa something vibe of the statue I copied Caryll from, nor with witch idea... Yet it still made a lot of sense to connect Hemwick stuff to it.
So I was lost on what to do, and then I remembered the very old instant impression of the redhead artist man and... It finally made sense to me! So I guess I just... knew something before I KNEW it?
So yeah, now Runes are joint effort of two people! :) Caryll is an artist from Cainhurst that also drew all those portraits, and had enough archiological education and talent to figure out an alphabet of Great Ones that even others could be taught to envision their own personal runes (ie Ludwig and Adeline). He saw very big potential in it as such language is exempt of the flaws of human languages and errors in verbal communication! People could even communicate their OWN thoughts and feelings to someone else without misunderstandings or language barriers - like how League's rune allows Valtr to let others see HIS understanding of what evil is and who has it. He also was slightly biased because he was hardly eloquent at all, and only felt like he could express himself in visual art. x)
Meanwhile, the witch was more of the "inventor" person that found a way to utilize Runes and created tools and means for exchanging them very effectively between people, without any divine Insight by brain fluid needed! Possibly worked on combining runes with ancient bells to basically create Arcane version of cellphones x) By getting literal eyes in her brain, she was able to receive significant amount of information that Caryll was able to perceive and write down too! Within lore, being close to a person who is seeing a Rune could make you see it too. Since it killed the witch quick, she was honored as martyr in the workshop for her sacrifice for the progress.
I now call her Carolee, but funny enough? Runesmith is mistranslation as well, because in the original it is 'Transcriptor Karel'. So basically Caryll is, indeed, transcriptor, meanwhile Carolee is, indeed, runeSMITH. Because tools and stuff. Had it not been too hard to bounce between general english speaking fandom and people who dwell on Japanese original as much as I do, I'd just call them Caryll and Karel instead! But yeah although similar names situation happens (like Adella and Adeline), that'd just be too confusing, so I gave her just a name that is variant of Caryll (and not variant of Karel!) similar enough, to still have connection to her previous version!
SO yeah, thanks anyone who read this short story! xD It just feels right for me, besides I feel like it'd be just bad to waste that redhead artist who came to me like a muse over a translation mistake... Like, sorry guy, you can't exist because I didn't bother to check the names extra time? It is like he saught me to let him exist, and I want him to have this chance! :) Just personal creator's intuition bias, don't mind me.

10. worst part of fanon
i think lots of people have fundamentally misunderstood the "hayakawa family" (i've come to hate that term) and why it works so well, especially denji's relationship to aki and power and makima's careful manipulations for denji to feel more and more comfortable with both of them, and if i have to see one more fic or art relegating them to the most boring bland found family tropes with absolutely no complications re denji's own struggle to relate to aki as an adult man, or people arguing that chainsaw man became bad when makima killed aki and power (HER GOAL SINCE THE START WAS TO GET DENJI ATTACHED AND THEN DESTROY HIS LIFE), i'm going to throw it all away and bar anybody from speaking about Found Families TM ever again bc you cannot behave with them. also their deaths doesn't mean they didn't mean anything to denji. he beat makima thanks to aki's lessons and power's sacrifice! he is a good caretaker to nayuta thanks to both of them. his current trauma and melancholy state are directly linked to what happened to them. come on
16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
the "yoshida is kishibe's son" hc was fun as a one-off headcanon but people have legitimately made up a whole characterization and history for both that they tear up over and like...... good for you but 1) i find them both uninteresting except in terms of being funny 2) i just know that when it ends up not being canon or not canon in the way they want, they're going to throw a fit and be very mad that the character who has little to no characterization besides being Mysterious And Creepy does not end up being the full fledged charater arc they made the fuck up
21. part of canon you think is overhyped
hayawaka family okay no. rather while i adore chainsaw man people tend to overhype its most basic aspects that many manga and anime also do as something like, exceptional, even while fujimoto wears his inspirations on his sleeves and talks about the stories beats and imagery that he lifted directly to have fun with. he's a great artist yes but i've seen people argue that he's the only manga author to have clear paneling and dialogue reading which makes me go PLEASE READ MORE FUCKING MANGA JESUS CHRIST. the dude is self learned but he learned from SOMEWHERE and the "somewhere" is "lots of other manga he adores and recommends that have given him the very basic techniques he uses today". anyhow i'm saying this bc by overhyping these very basic aspects that actually exist in many manga, most people end up sleeping on the aspects of chainsaw man that are actually underhyped and unique and interesting lol.

Looking for Filmmaking Partner
[EDIT: Someone did contact me about this, we wrote around 40% of the story, and then they abruptly quit the project. Leaving this post up for posterity, but I'm no longer looking for a collaborator and you shouldn't expect to ever see anything related to this.]
Hi, I'm trying to make a movie, and I'm looking for a creative partner, preferably another queer person.
Tumblr media
[Drawing of a character from the movie I'm doing concept art for]
SKILL STUFF
I guess I should explain what I mean by "creative partner". I myself am a jack of all trades, master of none. My best skill is probably writing; I once co-wrote an erotic novel with someone. I've written many short stories. I've written a lot of non-fiction stuff, mostly film criticism.
[Note: The best stories I've posted on ROM are probably Miss Latrix and Therapy.]
I've done a bunch of filmmaking related things in the past. I once attempted to make a movie with a few friends, and it didn't go very well. I didn't even know what the 180 degree rule was at the time and so the footage didn't edit, and there were a bunch of logistical problems so we didn't get very far.
Most of what I've done, video wise, is porn. I've shot and edited my own oddly ambitious videos before. I've composited in stuff from Blender into my videos. I'm not very good at using Blender but I've dabbled in photogrammetry and I understand, to a certain degree, how to shoot footage in the best way possible for later VFX work.
youtube
I am also a musician. I've recorded a bunch of albums, which can be found on Bandcamp and Itch. I own a lot of audio gear and understand how to do live recording and ADR stuff. [Most of my music is a lot more ambient than this.]
youtube
I also am a decent artist. I know how to draw things in perspective, and putting together a storyboard / previs thing is well within my skillset.
Tumblr media
I'm a "generalist", basically, and I'm hoping to find another generalist. Not necissarily someone who can do all of the same things as me, but someone who can do at least a handful of them. I want to be able to bounce ideas back and forth throughout the entire filmmaking process.
STUFF I LIKE (That I Hope You Like as Well)
My favorite directors are probably Brian De Palma, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, and Paul Verhoeven. I love De Palma for his filmmaking chops, but also his black comedy instincts and love of artifice / camp. Femme Fatale, Raising Cain, and Phantom of the Paradise are favorites. I love Cronenberg for his dry and acrid wit; Videodrome is such an incredible black comedy, and Crash is a total masterpiece. I like Verhoeven for how fastidious his work is, but also for his bleak satirical humor. Showgirls, RoboCop, and Starship Troopers are my favorites of his. I basically like all three of these directors for the exact same reasons. And Lynch? Obviously Lynch does camp, and he can be hilarious, but his work is just something else. Mulholland Drive and Fire Walk With Me are possibly the most empathic films ever made.
As I said before, I love camp. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark is a personal favorite. Obviously there's Showgirls, which I've already mentioned. Switchblade Sisters is not a movie I love, but I do enjoy how knowingly silly it is. Freeway is kind of like Switchblade Sisters if it was a legitimate masterpiece. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! is essential evil bitch cinema. Other camp favorites include House of Versace, All that Heaven Allows, Romy and Michele, The Wizard of Oz, and Cry Baby.
And here's a list of random movies I love: Bound, Batman Returns, The Hunger, House, Spider-Man 2 (2004), Down With Love, Scream, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, The Craft, They Came Together.
The Movie I Want to Make (That You Hopefully Also Want to Make)
I have not done a lot of work on the movie I'm trying to make. I believe in working basically from scratch with another person, so that's it's a real collaboration where both partners are fully invested. The list of notes I've included below is basically all of the work I've done so far.
The movie would be something of a "Woman's Film" parody / pastiche, mixed with exploitation movie stuff. It's a mix of All That Heaven Allows, Showgirls, Freeway, Heartbreakers, and Breathless [not the French movie; the 2012 Gina Gershon film]. It's about a cougar in a loveless and strained marriage. She has a daughter who's in a girl gang / all-female rock band. They are both, to some degree, rivals.
The daughter and mother live in two different worlds: the daughter’s world of delinquency and punk shit, and the mother’s adult world of keeping up with the joneses, passive aggressive remarks, etc. Adults fear the daughter because they think she’s violent and erratic [correct]. Adults fear the mother because they think she’s a homewrecker [correct].
The mother and daughter have foils. The mother has a rival cougar, who's richer and classier. The rival cougar has a daughter who pretends to be a chaste schoolgirl, but it's obvious to everyone except her mother that she isn't.
The daughter and mother have a tough relationship, and it gets worse when a young mother and her vacuous femboy son move into their cul-de-sac [not a femboy in a conscious way; he has no idea that he's not masculine]. The cougar, the daughter, and their respective rivals all want to sleep with the femboy, who turns into the MacGuffin.
The mother manipulates her daughter and her gang into killing her husband. Lots of bitching ensues. Lots of cunt energy. Etc. None of this is set in stone, but this is the basic premise I've come up with.
The Big Problem
This film would presumably be shot in the US [I lived there most of my life], but I currently live in Portugal. If we started chatting and ended up hitting things off, we could work remotely for a while. If we got to a point where we'd finished all of the pre-production [screenplay, storyboards, previs, probably even casting], I would be able to justify flying over so that we could shoot the movie together. But I can't do anything IRL before we've essentially completed the entire movie on paper, Hitchcock style.
If you live in the UK, Canada, or continental Europe or something and you were on board until I mentioned shooting in the US, you should still contact me and we can maybe work on something else!
Contact
Message me here on tumblr if you're interested in working together. Please include some of your stuff!

Oh yeah, its 4:30am alright
Listen kid, there's two ways to live ya life. You either post on your sky blog at 10pm because youre going to bed at 12am, or you post at demon hours because you decided it was your night to experience joy. I decided it was my night to draw
I've had big Fairune brain the past few days because I've been needing to finish the collection and I finally did. I found out there's a new one coming out this year and got excited until i saw it looks more like their games they made after Fairune which does not spark joy. I rememered having seen their game Kamiko on sale forever ago and liking the title screen art and then immediately nope'ing out when I saw what the game looked like. The old artist must've left or taken a dark path at some point because the Fairune 1 and 2 art is really really good, but then for Kamiko, Transiruby, and their slow life RPG thing I cant remember the name of, they switched to this generic early kickstarter era indie pixel art thing where the sprites legs are one pixel wide and they dont have enough frames of animation for how detailed they are and its just not great. Regardless, Kamiko is on sale on switch for $1.99 right now and I had 192 gold coins, so I bought it for 7 cents. I havent played much but uh, I wish that new Fairune was like the old ones lets just say that
I'm beginning to absolutely fucking love the PC88. The games EGG Console put out are all so fucked and jank but they arent unfun to play like bad NES or Genesis games. Silpheed is legitimately good, I'm talking more about Hydlide and Relics. I mention this because what made me play Fairune was that Hydlide wasnt on the switch lol. But I also just watched a video on Xanadu and like man. Like I dont think games should be that anti-player but literally zero games are released today that have that energy. Like imagine if the Marvelous guys were still making games like Chulip and Moon. Where theyre unbelievably charming and deep but they also fucking hate you and if you dont know all the enemies despawn if you kill them 3 times the game becomes incompletable. I guess Dark Souls 2 was like that
Anyways its my partners birthday tomorrow (cuz I havent slept yet tomorrow means friday) and were going to da zoo baybee, during a massive covid surge baybee, with non refundable tickets and N95s in our hands baybeeee. The event were going to starts late tho so I'll be fine on sleep. Lately I've been being a better employee and getting into work earlier, and actually doing my job for 7 hours than leaving and going to bed by 3am at the latest. Thats why most of my posts have been baffling or short, this shit sucks man. No time for Barony hat update. But I'm not working any extra days this weekend so i'm gonna eat all the hats that game has to offer soon
Peace and Long Life

Disappointed
Last year was absolutely bunk for hip hop. I tend not to really mention music on this blog, mostly because I don’t really listen to the radio like, but I did notice a trend that’s been irking me for the last half decade or so. Ever since asshole mumble rappers broke through with their Souncloud clout chasing, Hip Hop has been mired in this cesspool of pedestrian “creativity”. These records don’t deserve any of the airtime they’ve been getting and it sucks because other, legitimately good, MCs are getting passed over for the next Lil Asshole or some baddie with a BBW who doesn’t right her own sh*t. I’ve never been a fan of Cardi B’s music but, let’s be honest, she got as big as she did because she’s “pretty.” Thanks to that blueprint, I get to deal with insipid rhymes and superficial lyrics from admittedly stunning women like Coi Leray and Ice Spice. The latter literally said she doesn’t right complicated or insightful songs specifically so the most people in her audience, can vibe to the music. That’s fine, I don’t mind an occasional, insipidly vapid, pop-rap hit every now and again, but when it’s your intent to flood the market with that sh*t, we have a problem. How are you not a plant at that point? How are you not a shill? IF your verse makes every song you get on worse, why are you even doing music?
I got Sexxy Red out here, hoeing around, infecting me with audible herpes, while Drake is writing diss tracks at Rhianna because she became the mother of not his children. Bro, this is the bar right now? This trash is what the kids are making hot in the streets? I’m going to be forty this September. I grew up on Rap and RnB. Cats used to make records which stood the test of time. Why is Big counted as one of the greats when he only dropped two f*cking albums, one posthumously? What record out right now, or in the last five or so years, not released from and established artist or cats not named Cole or Kendrick, will EVER hit as hard as Juicy? That sh*t is f*cking thirty years old! It was Big’s VERY first single and still slaps harder than ninety percent of records out! Who is making music like that now? Drake? 21 Savage? F*cking Post Malone? I mean, we do get gems on occasion. Man on the Moon III was peak Cudi. I already mentioned Kendrick and J. Cole. Outside of these cats, what the f*ck is going on? My radio is full of Drill music, that Chicago sound, and it’s bullsh*t. I’m just going to say that out loud. It sounds like sh*t and does nothing but breed problems. This is that ignorant sh*t everyone THINKS rap is, that cats from my generation fought so hard against.
Look, I’m not trying to sound like three “old Head who thinks his era is the best and no new music is valid” but seriously? 2023 was the worst year for hip hop in decades and I don’t see it getting better anytime soon. Honestly, it’s not like I hate everything out nowadays. I have a fondness for Da Baby and, surprisingly, Lil Yachty got pretty good out of nowhere. TI’s kid, Domani Harris, is f*cking brilliant and needs more eyes on him as soon as possible. I enjoy most of Doja Cat, she’s come so far from being a cow and, as much as I sh*t on Ice Spice, I’d be lying if I said Boy’s a Liar pt. 2 was a straight bop. None of that makes up for the fact I got a DLC for Drakes last album, because the initial release was trash and the f*cking City Girls are a thing right now. The bar is so f*cking low right now, and we, as a culture, can’t seem to lift it up. It’s wild to me that creatives like Missy Elliot and proven wordsmiths like Method Man or Busta Rhymes, are overlooked in favor of Travis Scott and Lil Durk. Who the f*ck is Lil Durk?? Why the f*ck is NBA Youngboy a thing but I have to listen to some twenty year old tell me how whack Eminem is? Hip Hop, specifically Rap, is an art form. It takes talent, thought, and charisma to create a piece. If all you’re doing is throwing up trigger fingers and making “skeeyee” noises, please stop. You’re killing the culture and making everyone look like assholes.
