something about how toranaga recognizing mariko's intellect leads to him trusting her with his true plan versus ishido seeing ochiba's cunningness and wanting to have sex and how those narrative foils reveal things about both regeants
also, the fact that mariko could keep up with toranaga in free verse poetry when her husband could barely string a line together was crazy good characterization. no wonder she felt uninspired by buntaro. she was leagues ahead of him

Reactors watching Ochiba tell Ishido that from now on, the Council of Regents will answer to her: But how does she have so much power?!?!
Me: She's one of the widows of the de facto ruler of Japan, the mother of the future de facto ruler of Japan, and while I am asexual even I can tell Ishido desires her. Next.

Shogun (Ep 8)
"Pretend inferiority and encourage his arrogance." - Sun Tzu Art of War
Lord Toranaga and Lady Ochiba risking it all to appear "defeated" in order to win the long game. A game that no one knows but them.

Yep, I'm enjoying Shogun a lot so far.
And I love both Ishido and Toranaga, their rivalry and their two different ways of being sassy.

Tumblrinas getting all starry-eyed in over Jack FitzBritface or whatever in the Shōgun tags when Hiroyuki Sanada and Takehiro Hira are right there are why we can't have nice things.

That last scene with Ishido and Ochiba was so phenomenal and intense, not least because there was a moment it really felt like she was about to tell him to bend over

When Toranaga would eventually become Shogun, would he have all the regents killed or would they bow to him?
I haven't read the book, so I don't know if it goes into any detail about what the regents' fate ultimately is. (It may, and in that case, feel free to totally ignore what I'm saying!)
I would assume that Ishido, because he attempted to oppose Toranaga in battle, would die, either directly at the hands of the regents or by Toranaga. Alternatively, once he realized that his entire cause was lost (and that even Ochiba had turned against him), he might request permission to commit seppuku like the warlord that young Toranaga defeated in Episode 7 did.
As for the others, because they abandoned Ishido at the Battle of Sekigahara after they saw he no longer carried the Heir's banner (and before the battle was even fought), they might be granted leniency. At the very least, they would have land and fiefs taken from them, which would then be given to Toranaga's loyal followers.
But I suppose it would depend on how Toranaga was feeling that day. If it was in accordance with his larger plan — and he felt like they were no longer a threat and would remain loyal to him as shōgun — then he might keep them alive. I have a sneaking suspicion that his turncoat half-brother would not be so lucky, but you never know. Toranaga's a complicated fellow, as we've seen, and he doesn't always act in a way that we'd expect.
All I'm saying is SEASON 2 WHERE ARE YOU?

Ishido Kazunari
In honor of my family planning on watching the finale tonight, I drew Ishido! Not my favorite guy, but I love his headwear and the silks he gravitates towards ✨

I have a mighty urge to write about all the sex Lady Ochiba and Ishido Kazunari are not having. It is most important that they are not having sex. No sex. Only intense and agonizing yearning (for him naturally, for her undecided).
