the big panel on the first page is the one that i started out wanting to do as an illustration but i was like 'wait i want a bit of dialogue too' and so i was gonna do a one page comic but the timing of it didn't work out so it became two pages and since i wanted to do an illustration in the first place i ended up rendering the whole thing like one. don't particularly recommend.
i didn't eyedrop any of the colors, everything was just done with. like. black at varying levels of opacity (lol lol) so i was just eyeballing it, my hope is that i didn't whitewash anybody but if i did feel free to let me know and i'll edit it
the one in the back in the fireplace scene is nille of course. the n on her apron was sewn by bonnie who did their best
the scarf was knit by odile to give loop something to hide their face with and also 'coincidentally' so she could practice working craft into stitches
lulu and bumblebee as nicknames were stolen from future chapters of my fic and there is also secret shameless isiloop woven into this because it's me <3 only a little bit though haha
thank you as always to @insertdisc5 for these amazing characters and story! i've done more art in the past month and a half than i have in years it's wild

Thinking bout how Josephandre felt during that time in his journey where everyone started praising him as a chosen one or someone with a rich lineage of heroes and what not. I think he'd feel similar to Mira but couldn't show it outwardly at all or even tell anything bout it towards his own companions for fear of them being hurt or leaving. I think the reveal about his true identity came off similar in the way that Mira admitted about the fact that it wasn't the Change God that blessed her.
So the reveal hit Mira harder than it should that in a life and death situation like the one they were in, she just couldn't process it well enough that her favourite series' main character, that her favourite character especially, had the Same Troubles as her. I think Mira has been relying on Josephandre as a "he's a chosen one and he's able to do aalll these great things..." and she thinks a little less of herself cuz she Isn't a chosen one like how Josephandre has been praised so far. Only for the series' last issue to show that "Hey, Josephandre wasn't actually a chosen one. He's just an ordinary guy that wanted to help people." Mira emotions must've been a wreck at that revelation that, "Oh... he's just like me."

Finishing ISAT was an experience.
I played through all of Act 5 on my projector setup in the early morning before starting work and it was pretty crabbing intense.
Like, I was getting this whole nightmare cut while bathed in irl darkness.

And then and then, getting past that sequence and seeing the friends jump in for the save coincided with the sun actually rising outside.

The sunlight causes the contrast to fade in the the last pic I took, which if anything enhanced the atmosphere of the intervention saving lil' Siffy.

Cannot overstate how emotionally impactful this whole sequence was. 10/10 use of the color red.

I so desperately wish to see the dialogue you get if you try to use the dagger on your party members, please share if you're able
I've only seen snippets of it myself because I. STILL haven't played the game myself but based on what I HAVE seen and what I saw several people say about the lines of dialogue, whenever you try to use the dagger on your party members, Siffrin refuses and gets more distressed until he just kills himself instead. If you try to use the dagger on the party again after that, you get this dialogue.

And I know I'm going off topic here but the fucking "teehee" gets me because like. Honestly everything about the dagger event is just deeply upsetting. It's one of the most explicit instances of Siffrin being suicidal and having self-harm tendencies and Loop is very insistent on telling you not to use it even once you already have access to it. But Sif becomes more and more... desensitized the more you use the dagger to loop in time. And just. that desensitization combined with Siffrin's mania really gets me.

So,,, this one’s called souvenir. It’s an au where Siff remembers! I’m being as vague as possible cuz this is still in its concept stages!
The concept for this was written by @/auncyen (Sorry, directly @ing someone just sounds too overwhelming rn! >_<)
When I was trying to figure out a title, I wanted to look up the French word for remembrance…
Lo and behold… “Souvenir.” It was way too perfect!!

okay but i like thinking about the events of ISAT/siffrin's struggles not as them going from a party of normal people with normal struggles to "everyone essentially now has to help Sif heal from That," but as, "everyone in the party has had their own immense, long-term struggles, and this happens to be Siffrin's." like, siffrin is not just a, "problem child," or the standalone outlier in terms of angst
here me out
[major ISAT spoilers, especially for acts 3-5 btw]
siffrin doesn't know all these things in act 1, but:
Odile has had a life-long struggle with identity. Her mother abandoned her family at a young age, her father (presumably heartbroken and betrayed) has never kept any mementos or photos or stories of her and likely avoided speaking of her at any and all opportunities. For the most part, Odile loves her culture but admits she was an outlier in Ka Bue and always stood out from the texture of her hair and eyebrows. She's tried to settle before for the peace of just letting it be, but after meeting that travelling merchant, she realizes how badly she does want to bridge that gap in her identity and has now spent years travelling--all only to find that it didn't quite fix her problem and she hasn't been able to find herself entirely in Vaugarde either. She doesn't dwell too much on her mother, but I feel there is a part of her that could never forgive the hole her mother left behind.
Mirabelle has similarly struggled, though in terms of religion and sexuality. She holds herself to a very high standard of Changing and being a, "good," Housemaiden, and has gone to great lengths to learn as much as she can in efforts to reinvent herself and Change, as she feels she, "should," do, because that's what Housemaidens and diligent followers of the House of Change, "should," do. She is so adamant about this that even prior to the game, even prior to the King's reign--which was several months-a full year before ISAT begins--she is forcing herself to look into relationships to potentially date, bond, and even have children with someone and she doesn't want to do any of that it. She is distraught because she doesn't want to change that aspect. She doesn't want to become what she's not, or try to force herself to feel things she doesn't and can't feel, but she isn't being a good Housemaiden or a good member of her society if she stagnates.
Bonnie's plight primarily comes in with the King's reign, which again, has been for a few months now. They live with their older sister who loves them and cares for them tirelessly, but she is taken by the King's Curse and frozen in time--an event which presumably happens in front of Bonnie, who is encouraged by their sister's last words to just run from the village as far as they can to safety. If that isn't terrifying enough, this leads to them wandering the wilderness for days, exhausted, dehydrated, presumably starved/ill-fed, and lonely, and likely scared out of their mind. Their only saving grace is Siffrin, who happens to find them and save them. The comfort they feel with Sif is called into question when they have to watch Siffrin take a permanent, debilitating injury to the eye to protect them. While the incident seems to roll off Siffrin's worries pretty seamlessly, this is a lot for Bonnie, who by now, has recognized a pattern of the people they love being permanently hurt or altered in some way all just to protect them. They're convinced they're a recurring problem, and after the death ritual talk in the House, has to prepare themselves for the haunting reality that they might really lose everyone they love (and, again, this is a lot. Especially for a child).
Isabeau has tried Changing before, and while it did help him make leaps and bounds, he is still in a constant struggle to love himself fully. Let's be honest here: Isabeau is easily the most emotionally put-together party member, and most equipped to handle the stresses of the party in terms of feelings. This does not make him immune, however, to his own negative feelings. He even cites as wanting to become someone that Siffrin wouldn't be, "ashamed," to know. He also mentions that he is remorseful of the new image he's given himself, as an air-headed, jock type of person, which often leads people into genuinely believing he's stupid and thus treating him that way. Not to mention, as the emotional mediator of the party, I'm sure he occasionally gets stretched thin between helping everyone else manage their problems and altercations.
all this is to say: everyone in the party has their problems, and a good sum of these are not all instantly solved by the end of the story. all of them, siffrin included, are left in a space where they have plenty of healing to do but can confidently and comfortably still rely on one another.
ISAT is just siffrin's chapter of major emotional plight, and everyone else's is presumed prior to the narrative (i can also acknowledge that siffrin definitely got the worst of it though LMAO)

in stars and time is a game that made me feel SO MUCH EMOTIONS first time in years
i was in a very bad mental condition, always down, angry, or not feeling anything at all. it was like i myself was trapped in an endless timeloop of bad things and emptiness, not really attached to anything, not really interesed in anything
and then
i played in stars and time
and it felt nice. it felt warm
i can relate so much to characters, i can relate SO MUCH to siffrin! crying with him. laughing with him. caring about his family. being in fear and despair with him. being happy at the end
i'm allways hungry for the timeloop stories, and this one let me experience being trapped in one at full
the art style, the music, the story itself - it's like a game was made specially for me, it has everything that i like
i felt alive. again.
i really love siffrin, and really love that now he has his friends and family, his adventures, his perfect ending… but what about loop? they don't have this. they don't have anything. anyone. no one to comfort them. no one to be sad for them
and then i decided that I HAD to give them their perfect ending, one way or another
and i made this. this very, very long comic with only one page
is it shipping comic? or are they friends? family, even? or maybe enemies that decided to forgive eachother at last? or is it just self-talk?
who knows
it's up to you, readers, to decide meaning of this piece of fan art

Siffrin Doodles
Some sketches I made to practise drawing Siffrin. He's very expressive! I adore how multifaced he is and how well he fits in with the silent protagonist while still talking and making meaningful choices in the game. ISAT delves into why the protagonist is quiet and, oh boy, mood. I would also rather let other people talk and just listen to them.

POV: You're Isabeua.
(small spoilers) I absolutely adore the scene when Isabeau confesses his feelings for Siffrin. But I also imagine that after everything Siffrin went through, they will look tired AF. Let this dude rest! Still, Isabeua is going to see Siff's beauty because that man is hopelessly head over heels for them. They could walk out covered in trash, with the most manic grin on his face after rummaging through the garbage for a specific bauble, and Isa would still think Siff is charming.

i gotta say i have even more of an appreciation for the isat style than i already did after doing something like this. you can really tell how it was simplified really well to make it quick and easy to do for game development, but still look great! plus its quite a bit different from my original style so it was a fun challenge,,,
(if you're wondering about the difference in order, i tried to put them in the order of the tawahano characters speed. so coral-as-siffrin is actually the slowest out of these four, but i guess for his role as a mage instead of a rogue this might make sense. i've also changed around their craft types, weapons, backstories, etc. to try and fit it more into the au :))

okay so its going to be impossible for me to write a full post about isat until after my 2nd playthrough and i have a bunch of notes, but i WILL be insane about how the senses are depicted, especially things siffrin smells, tastes and sees.
(spoilers for the whole game but when i get to act 4/5 ill put it under a cut)
because it starts off normal. everything that's experienced for the first couple of loops is alright, and that's because siffrin's mental state is still mostly the same as when they went into the house for the first time with the squad.
until the text starts commenting on little things, like how the cookies are getting old to the malanga fritters not being exactly the same as how sif is trying to remember, to how whenever they get to the end and talk to the head housemaiden how they smell burnt sugar just before looping back to the start.
the most jarring is the sight. slowly, throughout all the loops you start seeing an image of siffrin standing somewhere, such as in a hallway, before vanishing, and it gets a bit more common the more loops you've been through. it becomes more obvious the more things taste less like anything (and the more the game comments on how siffrin's stomach feels) and how easy it is to miss something new someone says (because you and siffrin are speeding through everything you hear), how quickly his mental state is declining.
(now spoilers for acts 4 and 5 because thats when it gets Real)
during act 4 it's possible (for some ungodly reason), when talking to bonnie at least for the first time in a loop, for the music to cut off and their sprite suddenly be half covered in black. because. why not. (this happened the second time in act 4 i talked to bonnie in dormont and i jumped badly)
the most probable explanation for seeing this is because of how the last moments in act 3 are of bonnie literally being crushed by the king's hand. probably siffrin remembering what happened and it starting to overlay in his vision.
it's probably also why you see other sifs throughout the castle, especially the further along you go. either he's seeing vestiges of past loops, or hallucinating. probably both. their mental state is getting more and more worse.
act 5 shows this even more, with blacked out sprites of the other characters and visions of them in places such as the break rooms, or getting their dialogue when interacting with objects despite siffrin being completely alone in their rampage throughout the castle. most notable is the mirror room dialogue.
how the initial picture you see during act 5 is with the whole family, until you view it and siffrin is completely alone. how the memories of the past loops are overlaying with the current one to the point where his senses are starting to become more unreliable.
during act 5 as well if you interact with any candles they smell sweet. before siffrin either didnt smell anything or it was something he didnt really know.
anyway. siffrin's own senses becoming unreliable reflecting his own deteriorating mental state is a brilliant touch to add to the horror in the story. (even without talking about how his relationship with touch is).
postgame our man absolutely would not be able to trust his sense with how the past looping affected his perception of everything around them.

current ISAT fic ideas (full game spoilers)
Euphrasie-as-former-islander, when she was living at the House of Change only to one day realize she had no idea where she was from. (I imagine she coped much better than Siffrin/the King due to already having an established identity as a Housemaiden but also. would still be disconcerting to realize you can't remember anything past the last, say, six years). ...the biggest obstacle on this is figuring out all the lore of what was going on with other islanders in the House.
Siffrin having trouble sleeping post-game. Bonnie suggests a stuffed animal because Nille still has an old one and is grown-up so clearly it's fine for adults. And, well, no one thinks it can hurt, maybe having something to hold while they're sleeping would help them remember they're not in the loop anymore, so Isabeau makes Sif a big stuffed bird and promptly gets jealous because Siffrin loves it and cuddles it to sleep and Odile is just. "you know they love it so much because you made it right" "..." "you could just ask to cuddle. They said they're okay with touch as long as they know it's coming" "..." "Siffrin, Isabeau wants to cuddle but has forgotten how to use his words" "--M'DAME NO"
Siffrin having nightmares of killing the party during the bigrin fight/other nightmares based on intrusive thoughts. Admittedly the darker version of "Siffrin having trouble sleeping post-game". I think this would partially revolve around Siffrin being conflicted that he promised to talk to his family more and yet. how does he tell his family this. why is it still even in his head, etc.

Hello everyone! Welcome to this month’s devlog!
If you just stumbled upon this, I am Adrienne, also known as insertdisc5! I’m the developer, writer, artist, main programmer, etc of the game. The game being In Stars and Time, a timeloop RPG, which is also the next and final game in the START AGAIN series, following START AGAIN: a prologue (available here!).  You can find out more about In Stars and Time here!!!

The Big News Incoming first: In Stars and Time will be a part of Future of Play Direct on June 10, 8:00am PT | 11:00am ET | 5:00 pm CET! Future of Play is part of the Summer Games Fest and showcases a lot of incredible indie games, so I hope you’ll tune in. There might be a little something for you to see :> And...
In Stars and Time will also be a part of The Mix on June 8th! The Mix is an amazing games showcase over in LA. There will be a lot of press there, so I’m very excited to get some eyes on ISAT! Please stop by the booth and say hi to the lovely people from my publisher, Armor Games Studios, if you get the chance!
Alright! That’s it for the big news. Now for other big news.
Porting the game to Switch seems to be close to done! Currently, the porting team is taking care of optimization thingy things. The game is playable, but tends to drop frames every so often, so the team is optimizing the game to make sure it’s playing smoothly so Switch players can have the best possible experience! And…
The (hopefully) final round of Japanese localization is underway! Last April, the localization team sent back a couple of sentences that should be reworded now that they have further context. Now that those changes are implemented, they are playing it one more time to make sure everything works as intended!
I sadly don’t have a Fun Gamedev Thing to talk about this month (or… last month either…) because I moved elsewhere back in April and have been taking care of many things so my move went smoothly. Did you know that moving and getting used to a new town is hard work? So, here’s some things I posted on social media in the last couple months!

Here’s an illustration I drew a while back but only posted recently! I imagine that during their journey, everyone must’ve shared a bed at least once. This is also an occasion to show everyone’s sleepytimes clothes. Siffrin on that honk shoo honk shoo fit

Like many people, I have seen the Barbie movie trailer. So of course I had to redraw these iconic frames.
And someone over on Tumblr asked me about how I picked everyone’s names! Here it is copy-pasted for your convenience.
Siffrin: i think. i will wait until the game comes out before saying how i picked their name. ask me again later (it’s not a spoiler its just silly)
Mirabelle: her name was actually Prunille for the longest time, but I kept mixing it up and calling her Bonnie… so I went looking for another fruit sounding name (prunille>prune>plum in french) and Mirabelle fit her perfectly :> (Mirabelle is a kind of plum!)
Isabeau: it’s just a nice name. It actually is a girl name but i refuse to accept it because “beau” is the masculine form for “beautiful”, but either way it fits his character pretty well…
Odile: old sounding french name. that’s it. when i was early in preproduction her name was Isabeau actually (and she had a WAY different personality)
Bonnie: it’s a nickname and not their full name. have i said their full name yet? (checks the wiki) i did. Boniface is just a name that I had never heard before, and I could easily imagine Bonnie not liking it because it sounds “old and lame”. i think as they get older they would like it more and more
This is also a reminder that In Stars and Time has a wiki page. I am so grateful that this is a thing someone made. You know you've made it when your game has a wiki page!!!
