Oh gosh lindsay lohan is coming back with a romcom movie on netflix. And from the trailer it feels like several 90s and y2k movies in one. Maybe they did that on purpose for the nostalgia effect to gain views, but I don’t care
Gimme back silly simple entertainment. And I don’t mean that condescendingly but very affectionately. Please make this movie work and bring back that ye ole wholesome romcom vibe.
I don’t need blockbuster type of movies that want to serve adventure adrenalin or overly sad drama or jumpscare splatter or vfx/cgi bombardment or whatever. Just want to put my brain on autopilot and want smth soft and fuzzy

Alright so I got a bit curious... just how much of Vice Versa was ads? So I went in and cut out all the intros and up next screens and previews to get the total run time of the actual show, and also isolated the product placement segments.
I was generous with the product placement. I didn’t count the entire segments that were clearly based around the product, just the points where they actually interacted with the products.
Here’s my calculations (unless I’ve got the math entirely wrong)
The total run time was 11:32:11, which comes 692.18 minutes
The ad segments were 1:51:17, which comes to 111.28 minutes
Approximately 16% of Vice Versa was purely product placement
Basically, what I’m getting at is

I've complained before about the kneejerk "film/TV is a different medium, [literally any change from the original] had to be made in this adaptation's exact way because of the change in medium."
I find this irritating for many reasons—mostly because it seems a defensive and oversimplified attempt to silence criticism while denying that actual artistic choices go into deciding how to interpret and adapt a text.
Something else I was thinking about, though, is that frequently it's just wrong. Like, people will often leap to "but the medium!!" when anyone tries to talk about the lack of subtlety in a lot of the choices wrt characterization and atmosphere in the LOTR movies. But film and television are perfectly capable of nuanced characterization. They certainly can convey subtle menace—arguably more easily than prose alone, given that visuals and music can be used to great effect in crafting quieter tension.
This is apart from the question of whether this should be done, or should have been done in adapting scenes that were originally written as unsettling/uncertain rather than FLYING SKULLS!! or beating up Gollum or whatever. But film as a medium can absolutely be subtler than the LOTR movies, come on.
The idea that it can't seems a weird denial of the artistry of the medium and of the many artistic possibilities in adaptation. To me, this makes about as much sense as saying "the movies had to leave out most of Tolkien's songs because film is a silent medium." Whatever you think about including the songs ... uh, no, it's not?
The closest this comes to a valid response, IMO, is not that everything in an adaptation is reducible to its medium, but that X would be unusual or difficult for a particular genre. It's not that, say, film can't do scenes where an apparently normal or pleasant conversation has another layer of fear or danger and the very civility contributes to the tension. But you could argue that it's unusual or difficult in action-adventure films, yet that that's the most effective genre for LOTR as a story. Whether I agree or not, that wouldn't straight-up deny the capabilities of cinema as a medium.

#shocked with myself (maybe pleasantly surprised? is the right phrase)#at actually liking barbie a great deal more than i had prepared myself to#it was just a lot more sincere than i had expected; i was afraid it wouldn't be/be more on the snarky side of cinema lately#but it was strangely so much more heartfelt than that#of course some points felt rushed/too on the nose#but the girls and ryan gosling made me so happy#and her at the end saying (spoilers obvs) that yes YES she does want to take life by the hand and pay the price to live and live#also as a former representative of unrequited love the throughline felt a lot gentler than i was prepared for it to be#it was a lot more about emotion and the joy of growing up and growing old than i expected#i don't necessarily think its heart is as pure as a truly great movie??#but it didn't laugh AT you. it made you laugh and it also meant what it said#which idk idk in a sea of endless winks at the camera laughing obnoxiously loudly media i appreciated the at least#wanting to live and live well aspect of it all and how it took that seriously#like someone on my dash said. i don't really know if it was a good movie?? but the borders of my mind are stretched#something in me is dreaming because of it. so i think that at least is worth it all#also all the girls in the theater laughing their heads off did something to me!!!#there were countless friends (including mine) decked out in pink and it was so so so sweet to me#(anyway. you didn't need these thoughts and maybe I'll retract it later when I've come down from the high of hugging both my buddies)

Writing loads and loads about how beautiful life is and how it definitely gets better for Oomf who is struggling atm knowing damn well it got better for me and then Immediately got 100x worse after like a year of feeling better 😭😭😭😭 and the only "better" times I can really think of is when we did that thing for school . And we sat in a field to eat lunch after walking for a few hours . And just. Sitting there, in the grass, leaning on my friends, sharing food, complaining about how we had to walk for Another few hours, I was so happy despite how tired we all were. I hurt my leg, I got a chest infection, and still . I was so happy . It's one of my best memories ever. I don't remember a lot of my life, but this one thing, I don't think I'll ever forget. It was so beautiful, the field was so beautiful, it was so nice and sunny, the food tasted better than usual because we were so tired and hungry from walking so much. Everything felt so much funnier than it actually was, we were just laughing at everything. I don't think I'll ever be so happy again in my life, but the thought that maybe life will be as good as that again, makes me want to keep living . I would do anything to feel like that again . But then the day ended with us asking for water at 6 different checkpoints and them Only finding us at the Last checkpoint AND they only found us because we waited there for like 30 minutes . We almost died!!!!!
