okay but taako and lup only achieving a sense of identity after joining the IPRE
taako and lup are identical, even going so far as having the same haircut and let people tell them apart by colour coordinating themselves, taako wears one colour, lup wears another - except they’re constantly swapping and pretending to be each other. if taako doesn’t want to go to class, lup will put on his outfit. If lup doesn’t want to talk to someone she’ll tell them she’s taako and that she’ll “tell lup they were looking for her.”
no one ever truly gets to know them, never gets close, because they don’t let them - they seem distant to people they’ve sometimes had lengthy conversations with because that was with the other twin. its fun and isolating and assures they’ll never get hurt because the only person they’ve let get close is their brother/sister, the only person they’ll ever trust to watch their back.
It changes with magnus who always makes an attempt to guess who is who, something not many people - not even their aunt - did very often. After a while he’s right every time and they start lying about which one they are in an attempt to stop magnus from getting too close - it fails because he finds them both equally as interesting as the other and isn’t deterred when he learns he’s talking to the “other twin”. It isn’t until taako is leaving class one day in a bad mood and magnus catches up with him that he realises maybe things are changing. Magnus tries to start a conversation with taako, who lies and says he’s lup before trying to leave, then magnus laughs and says ‘sure taako, whatever you say’, he’s the first person to ever be able to tell them apart.
then barry, then lucretia, then merle, then davenport.
It gets to the point where it starts stressing them out, how could they tell them apart?? no one had ever been able to do that, not even their family. They sit down with the team and ask, confused and more than a little vulnerable. The team smile and say that even though they’re inseparable they’re still two different people, they all like them both for different reasons and maybe they should try exploring those different reasons. Merle laughs and says ‘your voices are different, idiots.’
They start to make changes though, the first time they all see each other again after that meeting their clothes are totally different from each other, taako has his hair tied back and is wearing a large hat, lup has braids and lots of jewellery. No one points it out, they just smile and greet them. After that they grow more independent of each other, occasionally switching places (they went as each other for halloween once) but thanks to their new family they realised that maybe letting others get close, letting them know the real lup and taako, might not be too bad.

The changes started subtly: cravings and intrusive thoughts. But they soon built into noticeable physical changes, followed by a complete change in perception. It isn’t clear what you will become, but you can no longer deny that you are becoming something.
Do you fight the change? Embrace it? In either case, there is no stopping the transformation. Whatever you are becoming, it is inevitable. At best, you might be able to wrest enough control over yourself to spare those around you.
Transformation is a Kafkaesque, body-horror, solo RPG. Take on the role of an unfortunate soul whose body and mind are becoming something they cannot yet imagine. As the game progresses, you will change, taking on both physical and mental monstrous changes. You’ll journal about the changes as you struggle to understand what’s happening and relate your understanding to those around you.

Lup is content. She has every right to be. This one of the Raven Queen’s babiest Reapers (fine, she’d gotten to the point that repeating Taako’s joke had become unironic) is done with work for the day, having exchanged her feathery cloak and scythe for an impossibly soft oversized cream-colored sweater and thick woolen socks. And if that would seem out of place in the Astral Plane, well, it sure as fuck doesn’t at home, where Lup is comfortably curled up on the couch and under a blue and silver blanket from Istus. In her hands is an open book, its faintly musty scent twining with that of the cinnamon and ginger candle she’d lit earlier.
Outside, it’s a crisp autumn day in the Prime Material Plane. A lively breeze races through the rainbow of leaves still clinging to the trees, while far above a far stronger wind sends faint whisps of clouds sailing through a pale blue sky. The chill in the air heralding the season to come still yields to the warmth of the late afternoon sunlight. Only the last reaches Lup here inside though. Golden light pours into the room, setting golden curls and silver yarn shining as well as illuminating the magical symbols and necromantic diagrams painstakingly drawn in the old book.
Okay, so, look, Lup may have picked up the book from a raid on a necromantic cult last week. Maybe.
Lup turns the page and hums. Hm. That’d be an interesting idea for their next at least somewhat condoned if still illicit necromantic experiment.

The quiet of the room, broken only by the sound of an occasional turn of the page or a gust of wind rattling its way over the windows, is broken by the familiar, delicate rrrrrrrrrrrip of the barrier between this plane and their place of work.
“Hey, babe,” Lup says, looking up from the book as Barry steps through the rift. Her husband’s scythe disappears into nothingness as the tear closes behind him, and he turns to her with a smile.
“Hey, Lup. How is the most beautiful person in any world doing?” Barry asks, taking off his own black-feathered cloak. As expected, beneath the cloak and the scythe and the whole lichy, spooky agent of the Raven Queen vibe, Lup’s husband is as he ever was, one of the plane’s biggest nerds with a denim-clad ass that just won’t quit.
“I don’t know, Barry, how are you doing?” Lup replies, a triumphant smirk on her lips. As expected, even after decades, Barry goes bright IPRE red at the remark.
Barry clears his throat, straightening his glasses, likely trying to will the blush away. Gods, Lup is so in love. “I-I’m great. You?”
“Enjoying my time off, natch.” Lup puts the book down on the coffee table and takes a moment to stretch, cat-like, ears flicking as she does.
“Uh-huh. And how did you manage that?” Barry asks, stepping away toward the line of hooks on the wall where Lup’s cloak already is already hung up.
“I finished my paperwork early,” Lup says, smug and entirely pleased with herself.
Barry pauses, looking back over his shoulder at her. Whatever he sees in her face makes him let out a soft, fond snort as he shakes his head. “What did you bribe Kravitz with?” He calls as he hangs the cloak, trading sensible work boots for slippers. Having fully entered nerd alert mode, Barry quickly returns to his beloved wife.
Lup stifles a snicker, drawing her legs back and patting the newly vacated couch cushion. “How’d you know?”
Barry sits before turning to her, face schooled into solemnity. Lup bites back another giggle. “Well, now, you see, Lup, darling, love of my lives and deaths… liches have True Sight.”
At that, Lup does laugh, and Barry’s face splits into an easy, affectionate smile, the kind Lup might have called sappy if that same smile didn’t turn her own insides to lovey-dovey mush at the sight. If seeing Barry smile like that, at her, because of her, for her, didn’t fill her heart with such love that could anchor her across time and space and still bring her home. But, uh, it kinda does. Like a lot. So she doesn’t say a word, and Lup breaks into her own fond, loving smile.
Slowly, deliberately, just as quietly deliberate as the love they had carefully cultivated for 47 years, Lup rolls forward onto her knees and places her hands on her husband’s warm, steady shoulders. Barry remains still as Lup leans in and kisses him, soft, feather light. Even that simple touch sends a spark through her as the echo of their melody plays in her mind. Lup pulls back and studies Barry for a moment. Half a heartbeat after she does, Barry’s eyes open, and Lup is, not for the first time, struck by the depths of the love in his eyes. Lup’s lips, still electric where they’d touched Barry’s, quirk into a small smile. She leans in again, planting kisses on his forehead, his cheeks, his nose, once, twice, three times. The last elicits a quiet laugh, and Lup grins wider as she feels the shaking of his shoulders beneath her hands.
In a flash her arms are wrapped around his neck, tugging him forward as she falls backward into the couch. Barry’s lips are back on hers at once, warm and soft and so familiar. Even in the quiet cycles, where the Light had been found and worlds had been peaceful, there’d always been a sense of urgency, a sense that each kiss could be the last before they lost each other, perhaps for the final time. Now, in the calm and quiet of their comfortable home, in a far happier and more hopeful world- well, they really did have time enough to love each other.
Hey, Lup had said she’d smooch Barry’s brains out when she’d gotten her body back. She most definitely had, but she rather likes continuing to make good on that particular promise.
If the sun is lower in the sky when they finally draw back, breathless, neither of them comments on it. Comfortable once more, Lup tilts her head in, bringing her forehead to touch Barry’s, their quick breaths mingling.
“Wow,” Barry whispers, seemingly stunned.
Lup might laugh, but for the moment she feels just the same, just as in love and in awe that she is so loved in return. “Taught him how to make elvish bread.”
“Hm?”
“Kravitz. What I traded for paperwork. How to make it. And how to twist it into the right shape.”
That gets Barry’s attention. Gods know he’d spent enough hours having Taako help him practice before presenting anything to Lup. “Huh.”
“Yeah.”
“How about that?”
“I know, about time, huh?” Lup breathes out a soft, breathy laugh.
“Can we really judge? We took long enough.”
“We took exactly the right amount of time; I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Barry’s chuckle seems to reverberate through her, and Lup reaches up to cup his face, running a thumb over his cheek. “Hey, babe?”
“Mm?”
“I think I have a new favorite plane.”
“Mmhmm? Which one?”
Lup leans in to kiss Barry again, but, just before she does, she answers. “This one.”

how likely the ipre crew is to have their pronouns in their bio
Taako absolutely does. He probably uses he/they but puts “any pronouns” in his bio.
Magnus takes a little bit longer to do it mostly because I’m not sure he knows exactly what a pronoun is (that beefcake himbo dumb energy came out). But when he does he probably puts “he/his (cis)”
Merle does! He probably has nothing else in his bio besides his pronouns. Also he’d be the one to put the full “he/him/his”.
Lucretia was the first to put her pronouns in her bio. She probably experimented with they/them pronouns for a while but then decided she was more comfortable with she/her (which is okay!).
I’m sorry but I feel like Davenport doesn’t. I doubt he’d even be active on social media at all, and if he were he’d have no bio or name or profile picture. Or if he did have a bio it would be like, his height and that’s all.
Lup does. She’s definitely got them in her name instead of her bio for every social media that she has.

i’m actually surprised i’ve never seen anyone discuss this (maybe i just missed it), but do y’all ever think about the culture of last names on the IPRE’s home world?
of the 7 people on the starblaster, only 3 have last names, and of those 3, all of them are two-word compounds.
highchurch. burnsides. bluejeans.
all of them reflect a trait about the character or their background; something distinguishing. merle is a holy man; magnus is very proud of his sideburns; barry is known for his signature jeans. (he even remarks in the graphic novel, while his memory is erased, “no shit. you think it’s a family name?”)
so here’s my headcanon-y theory on last names on the IPRE world:
they’re just for fun, and/or to distinguish between others with the same first name, if you so wish! it’s perfectly normal to have only a first name, of course, but it’s also fine to give yourself a last name (you probably need to register it somewhere to make it official), and a cultural norm to make it actual words, as opposed to a non-word surname like you’d find irl (like ”smith”).
(i’m inclined against thinking passed-down family names are common--barry’s especially strikes me as one that’s unique to him, not passed down. but it could be the case, for names like merle’s or magnus’, that some families keep a tradition of choosing a specific last name (or one that matches a specific theme); but not as a legal requirement or overall cultural norm.

Cryptocurrency has been subjected to constant attention in the past few years for its revolutionary nature. The presence of cryptocurrency is constantly growing, and therefore, it needs the law to transform along with it to address its administration and execution. Several courts have had trouble in applying substantive Trademark Law to this field of technology. It may also be a proactive threat to trademark owners; thus, this article delves into the question of whether or not a name or logo of a cryptocurrency can function as a legitimate trademark.
Understanding Cryptocurrency
Cryptocurrency is a virtual currency that utilizes cryptography for security along with a decentralized ledger to record transactions. Unlike a physical bill or coin issued by the government, it exists only in a digital medium. It is represented in a computer code that can be programmed to embrace a variety of different rights and obligations to perform different functions other than acting primarily as a mode of payment or exchange only. It can be used to provide digital access to a good, an application, or a service, while it also represents interests in real-world assets.
Also, unlike the conventional currency, cryptocurrency is not centrally created and distributed. Instead, it is a network of computers, which maintains a digital record of transactions while performing the computational work. This, in turn, is rewarded with the newly created cryptocurrency.
In the age of cryptocurrency, the first move was advanced by the introduction of Bitcoin, which was introduced in a white paper in 2008, and then it came to be launched in 2009. Since then, there have been more than 2500 cryptocurrencies. A few commonly known cryptocurrencies are Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, Zcash, Dash, and Monero – all of which have distinct trademarks.
Can Cryptocurrencies be Protected under the Trademark Law?
A trademark is a word, label, symbol, etc., which is capable of being represented graphically to distinguish the goods and services of one from that of another. While the law in the United States with utmost certainty includes ‘cryptocurrency’ in its Trademark ID Manual for bringing under its purview different classes of goods and service like within Class 9 (cryptocurrency hardware wallets, hardware for cryptocurrency mining, etc.), Class 36 ( financial exchange, such as cryptocurrency payment processing, cryptocurrency trading service, etc.), Class 42 (online cryptocurrency wallet, etc.), other jurisdictions suffer from being able to provide a concrete provision for cryptocurrency.
Therefore, for bringing cryptocurrency within the ambit of any trademark legislation, a few questions have to be answered in the affirmative:
Can cryptocurrency be considered a good or service?
Does it utilize logos, words, symbols, or any combination thereof to establish a certain degree of distinctiveness?
Does the name of the cryptocurrency act as an identifier of the source of its origin?
The question to the first answer may be subjective. Let us consider the case of Alibaba Grp. Holding Ltd. vs. Alibabacoin Foundation, where the Federal District Court held that a cryptocurrency could be considered as a good capable of bearing its own trademark. However, it is pertinent to note that where cryptocurrency is used for the like purpose of traditional currency, it may not be regarded as a good or service as it will act only as a medium of exchange for the value it holds. If the same is used for a rather specific purpose other than what currency can provide for, it may function as a good or service.
Where it is determined that a particular form of cryptocurrency is capable of being accounted as a good or service, the answer to the next two questions may be considered. Where the cryptocurrency helps identify the single source from which it emanates by associating to a particular symbol, logo, or name, it can function as a trademark. Bitcoin is an example of a decentralized cryptocurrency, which does not emanate from a single source; therefore, it may not qualify as a trademark. However, where a currency is centralized, the chances of it being considered as a trademark may increase since it is originated and distributed by a single known source.
Furthermore, to be able to create a distinct image in the mind of the ordinary consuming public, it should not be generic to the category of goods or services being pursued. It is for this reason that in the case of Telegram Messenger Inc. vs. Lantah LLC, the US District Court restricted the defendants from using the term ‘gram’ for their cryptocurrency brand since it was similar to the plaintiff’s trademark of the ‘Gram’ wordmark and icon. Consider, for example, if the identity of the cryptocurrency is conceived in the minds of the consuming public in terms of only the type of cryptocurrency that can be used to buy real estate in Australia (a fictional ‘AusieCoin’), then in that case, instead of identifying the source of the company distributing the ‘AusieCoin,’ it may be at risk of being deemed the generic name of that type of digital currency. Therefore, terms like Bitcoin have been identified as a generic mark by the USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office). However, since this is up for subjective analysis, some countries have registered ‘Bitcoin’ as a legitimate trademark, like the United Kingdom Patent Office (TM No. UK00003279106) and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (Trademark Number: M4046141).
Cryptocurrency has taken diverse forms due to its tendency to evolve. Ever since bitcoins were introduced, newer versions have been witnessed like that in the form of ‘alt-coins,’ which are alternatives of varying degrees and can take up various other forms. The realm of cryptocurrency gets far more complicated with new generation blockchains like Neo and Ethereum. Since cryptocurrency is diverse and it is difficult to exercise control over it, no individual or entity can claim ownership or responsibility; hence, there appears to be a meager possibility to protect any Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in community-based blockchains.

Disadvantage of not Attributing Trademark Protection to Cryptocurrency
The ramifications of not attributing trademark ownership could lead to multiple issues arising from the unsound use of such technology. Consider an example of an ordinary consumer surfing the internet who is intrigued about cryptocurrency and wishes to buy the same. After considering the option of buying the bitcoins, he finally decides to buy them from a person who is extensively promoting the sale of such currency while acting as a fraudulent investor. Since the said cryptocurrency is not owned and protected under the trademark law, the proprietor cannot withhold anyone acting in such fraudulent capacity to undo the harm to the reputation of the brand of cryptocurrency.
In failing to prevent the said action, the consumer may have to face difficulties that were uncalled for due to a lack of remedies that could have been resorted to. In addition to the same, terms like ‘Bitcoin’ and ‘Blockchain’ have gained much popularity, and it is easy to use such terms for other goods or services without being legally restrained. Therefore, it is imperative to determine the method of granting protection to cryptocurrencies to safeguard users from being deceived by different cryptocurrency providers and withhold the reputation of authorized providers.
Therefore, another alternative to sole proprietorship over such technologies can be found in the attribution of collective authorship to proprietors in the form of ‘collective marks.’ The same would act as a safety net against consumers being misled and also overcome the paradox of de-centralized control. However, this is also not a problem-free route as determining true ownership may be difficult to trace the origin of the proprietor of trademarks.
Concluding Remarks
Many giants are willing to enter the race for cryptocurrencies like Facebook, Samsung, and Nike to provide for their cryptocurrency avenues. Therefore, as observed, the advancement of technology in the field of cryptocurrency has brought in new challenges and issues, which need to be addressed through the introduction of regulatory and legal changes.
First and foremost, it is imperative to allocate a place within the Nice Classification to cryptocurrencies and the many kinds a cryptocurrency can develop into probably. Therefore, the recognition has to come in the form of legislation to develop a new jurisprudence.
