Inkling!! Now, I will say that I don't rlly have a whole bunch of head canons for this guy, so I'm sorry in advance for the short post.

Prof. Inkling Head canons

-Trans Aro/ace

-Autistic

-Rlly good with kids

-Grandfather figure to everyone on the octopod in a way.(Especially Shellington)

-Gives out the best advice and is the one you'd go to if you ever need someone to talk to

-Good at reading people

-Was Tweak's, Barnacle's, and Shellington's teacher in college

-Took shellington in as a mentor and taught him everything he knows abt sea life

-Is a published author

-Helps Koshi, and Dashi edit their book series(Assuming it's actually published in their world)

-Octonauts was just a club for sea life appreciation and to help save the sea

-Him and Kwazii place bets on their pin ball matches (Like trading chores or taking over the others)

-Knows French

-As a teacher, he used to goof around with his students a lot(Like poke fun at them in a light hearted way and was overall a chill class.)

-He wasn't the best at grading though, lol.

-Teaches the Vegimals abt sea life and what not.

Again, not the longest post, so I apologize Inkling fans, but I just don't have a lot of thoughts and head canons for him. Also, some of these are based off of my French Teacher, bc why the hell not?? I am also sorry for any mischaracterization of him.

One of the interesting things about Callie's new look for the upcoming splatfest is how it debunks the popular headcanon that she kept the octopus tattoo. Unless I don't know how clothing works and we can't see it but I'm not sure. The splatoon 2 art book did say it was temporary and it can be washed off but it's still a popular headcanon that she still has the tattoo and i see it a LOT in fanart. It's actually been a long time since Callie has worn anything extravagant like this. The last time I can recall is her fancy dress from that one splatoon 1 splatfest art, but that's it. It's nice to see Callie express herself like this again man... it's great. She's still so gorgeous....

(It also deconfirms that stupid theory that callie has sexual trauma from splatoon 2 and that she covered up her body after the story mode because she was put into a revealing outfit. Like no. Stop it. I'm sorry but, no)

HI HELLO! Welcome to my completely unnecessarily detailed analysis on how I think Inkfish languages could work! + with art! yay! This is all pretty rough and not fully fleshed out (I don't have the time or patience for that lmao). THIS IS A LONG POST.

Okay, so there's dozens of languages spoken by cephalopods in the Mollusc Era but the main two I'll talk about are Inkling (or Inklish) and Octarian, spoken mostly by Inklings and Octolings respectively.

In cephalopods, speech is formed using the syrinx and larynx, two fancy vocal organs that most other species don't have together. The larynx makes sounds using the radula (tongue) and vocal folds in the throat, it's clear and pretty easy to understand as the sound itself resembles human speech, albeit warbled. The syrinx makes noise by vibrating air at the base of the trachea, it's often trickier to follow as it can sound more like droning background noise than words sometimes.

An inkfish can use both of them at once, resulting in an EXTREMELY complicated language system where words can be made up of multiple layered syllables, and several words and sentences can even be said at the same time.

As you can probably imagine, all of this is LITERAL HELL to learn for species who don’t have both a syrinx and a larynx (so basically anyone who isn't a cephalopod). But fear not! There are many simple and more inclusive alternatives, dialects and other cool stuff like sign language and instant TTS technology for people who physically can't pronounce Inkling/Octarian or even vocalise at all (eg. jellyfish).

Both main Inkfish languages can be broken down into laryngeal words (made with the larynx), syringeal/drone words (made with the syrinx) or a combination of both, called dual-toned/layered words.

Keep in mind that both word-types can be spoken at the same time. Layering can be used to add additional connotations to a word, or to even make a new one entirely. For example, the laryngeal noun ‘bird’ combined with the syringeal noun ‘metal’ spoken together will create the layered Inkling word ‘aeroplane’, like a compound word in English.

Dual-toned stuff is more common in Inkling than in Octarian, as the language is older and has more loanwords. Inklish's dependence on the larynx gives it a higher-pitched, clearer sound whereas Octarian's more monotone syrinx-based structure results in a deep, almost guttural sound.

Both cephalopod languages are heavy on tone and pronunciation, resulting in a plenty of accent indicators in written scripts. I used the in-game fonts for the art but if I were to rework it, each letter would probably be more complicated than traditional Mandarin on steroids. So hell on earth, basically.

On a side note, all of these language features open possibilities for some very cool poetry and literature. An inkfish author could write a poem with two lines of thought occurring at once, or a book with vivid emotional undertones written inside the prose. Pretty cool.

POV : you just complimented two young punks about their ear piercings and they thank you by schooling you to hell and back

-Long story short ; I have a feeling that since they have no visible eardrum hole to actually serve the hearing function, the inkfish "ears" aren't actually their ears, but the humanoid version of their fins ; or more accurately of the floppy bits on their heads from their original species.

So they aren't actually ears, but they're used for fashion, conveying emotions (they can move them more or less consciously, much like a cat), and also and mainly for protecting their actual ears, located behind them, from weather conditions (like wind or sand storms), from direct impact during fighting circumstances, and from currents, like when they swim.

Their headphones are actually always designed to somehow cover the little slits that are their actual ears. (The fins play as mere structural support then.)

...This is a theory of mine that just kinda jumped in my face when thinking about how Inkling ears are completely flat, and even if it isn't going to stop me from drawing their fins like actual ears, it's cool to have an explanation about that design. Hope you like it too 🤗

Octonauts Headcanons because they consume my brain (sleep edition)

Shellington cannot sleep if he isn't holding something, usually a plush toy or his own paw.

Dashi takes a while to get comfortable, tossing and turning for up to an hour.

Captain Barnacles has a special cooling blanket because polar bear.

The vegimals will routinely sleep in one big pile of the greenhouse floor for no apparent reason.

When stressed, Peso will make a nest out of blankets and pillows to sleep in.

Kwazii will knead his pillow before he goes to bed.

Tweak is a very active sleeper. She's a sleep-talker and -walker.

Inkling will occasionally fall asleep in the library. His little ear things will also twitch if you touch them.

Agent 3/Captain 3 Mental State

Do y'all ever just think about how Agent 3 might actually have a different kind of problem mentally- like, I see a lot of people always talking about the brainwashing and the fighting Octavio and the Octarians as their "flaw/trauma to over come" and dont get me wrong I love these flaws in their character! But I've just been thinking-

What about a hero complex? I mean, it might be typical, but Agent 3 has been working for the New Squidbeak Splatoon ever since they where about 14, they've been put in death situations over and over again- so what if they tie in their worth to their abilities? To what they can bring to the table-

Yet every couple of years, a new agent, a new person who did what they did all those years ago, but...better at times, Agent 4 (that one oc) saved the great zap fish, beat Octavio, and they did it while fighting Callie, and now Captain 3 has been- basically replaced by Neo 3, who fought Octavio, and a bear in literally space! Captain 3s achievements slowly pale more in comparison, and Agent 8 went through everything they went through in heels

The rest of the squidbeak splatoon is similar, Callie and Marie are literally idols and the original agents of the New Squid beak splatoon, Marina is just Marina, smart with technology and good at musician and paved the way for octolings to enter inkling society, Pearl is practically a princess with the voice of a torpedo, deep cut isn't technically part of the squid beak splatoon, but they are also idols-

All to say...Captain 3 might feel the need to prove themselves, they did take up the spot of their beloved Gramps, and even if he is a bit of a nut job, he was a literal War Hero and legend, Captain 3 is in the shadow of so many great people- insecurity complex might be their new dearest friend!

Anyways, this was just a bit of a character study using nothing but my tired imagination- give me your thoughts and feed back please and thank yous!

CAPTAIN BARNACLES

— mid 30s or late 30s

— has been the Captain for 15–20 years; became Captain around the age of 20

— the tallest and strongest of the crew

— Canadian; seen from his room decoration where he had a banner called ‘MV Manitoba’ and his sister Bianca and her cubs—Orson & Ursa—live in Northern Canada (Arctic region)

— sometime after he graduated Polar Scouts he got a position on a ship— MV Manitoba; it is very likely that he met Tweak on this ship

— adding: the ship, probably, crashed during a big storm and he moved back to the Arctic to train Tracker

— also, Barnacles has a fear of storms; if you look closely, he tends to become more tense during storms

— blames himself if one of his crew gets hurt

— autistic? probably

— polar bears shed their fur, so he sheds a LOT since his location changes all the time (headcanons here)

— very fluffy when his winter coat is fully grown, looks smaller when it’s fully shed

— adding: everyone on the Octopod has had that first summer when they are just in shock because the Captain suddenly looks so much smaller, and especially Peso freaked out

— the crew’s Dad™; everyone on the crew (expect maybe prof. Inkling) sees him as a father figure (especially Peso and Dashi)

— everyone but Inkling has slipped up and called him dad by accident at least once

— sees Natquik as his father figure (gave him a father’s day present as a cub once and they both cried)

— speaking of father’s day, the crew gives him a father’s day present every year (as a thank you, of course, nothing else) (he cries when he gets into his room, he loves his kids crew)

— too self-sacrificing for his own good; has given Peso a heart attack multiple times /hj

— scolds Kwazii for being reckless but does pretty stupid sh*t himself (see above)

— likes mint chocolate and mint-flavored things in general

— loves hot chocolate

— favorite flavor of kelp cake is chocolate

— so basically this man likes chocolate a lot (just like me fr)

— secretly a huge cuddle bug; when he visits his family in the Arctic and stays the night or two, he cuddles with Bianca and the cubs

— his room is the coolest in temperature; keeps it at Arctic temperature (canon)

— sleeps with a picture of him and Bianca under his pillow to not feel too homesick

— keeps a picture of the crew on him at all times, usually on his Octo-Compass

— literally has Dad Lore™; when he’s old, he might just drop some random facts or some stuff that happened that no one knew very casually and shock everyone

— this is canon, but I’m putting it anyway: claustrophobic and has PTSD

— ALSO in need of a massage therapist; the amount of knots he must have in his back...

— mr. “hurt? no I’m fine, just doing my job!”

— basically it’s like “are you okay?” “I’m fine” *as he’s literally bleeding out*

— book smart but also street smart, yet also a little stupid (affectionate) at the same time

— understands most modern lingo but loves using it incorrectly just to mess with the rest of the crew (Inkling joins him sometimes) .

— adding: jokingly said “me-me” once in a super serious tone and earned the wrath of the crew (except Inkling who didn’t see the problem and it caused a whole argument)

— LOVES cold and snow and ice; that being said, he deals with a hot climate, but not for very long

— great immune system, but if he gets sick, boy he is SICK (Peso will literally have to tie him to the bed because he refuses to rest)

— is severely injured a couple of times a year, typically due to selflessness

— overall very reluctant to seek medical help and attention because he’s fine what do you mean

— polar bears are the most carnivorous of the bear family, so he eats a lot of meat

— very careful when helping small creatures because he’s huge and doesn’t want to hurt them; constantly worried he’d crush them .

— stands with his claws facing backwards and kneels down when talking to creatures smaller than him (both canon) to make them feel less intimidated, which he learned in the Polar Scouts (Tracker does it too)

— doesn’t know how to handle being flirted with (if he even realizes it, which he probably doesn’t)

— Peso and him are Cold Weather Buddies™

— Tunip is his Emotional Support Vegimal™ (either doesn’t know or realize)

— has a great singing voice and definitely sings in the shower

— has the deepest voice of the crew and in the morning it sometimes scares them due to how deep it is all of a sudden (Kwazii once joked Barnacles was being possessed)

— gives the BEST (bear) hugs

— maybe on the ace spectrum (no I’m definitely not projocting what are you talking about /hj)

— doesn’t really share his backstory, & only shares some of his more fond memories of the Polar Scouts

— Natquik is the only one who has seen him lose his temper / have a full-on breakdown

— loves playing the accordion (canon); though unfortunately, has trouble playing it well (he’s doing his best—also am I the only one who likes it??)

— his other (canon) hobbies include writing in his Captain’s log, exercising, making shadow puppet shows, singing sea shanties (+ in the rain), dancing to music with the Vegimals, building models and drawing

— dances (and sings) in the rain sometimes

— an oceanographer and a map finder (canon)

— his Octo-Compass, while a small device, is multi-functional; it was a gift from Tweak

— has many embarrassing stories from his youth that he WON’T share and he forbids Bianca from telling anyone from his crew

— chubby; when someone’s truly muscular, they are going to be a bit chubby, and with the density of muscle mass Barnacles must have due to his level of strength, he’s going to obviously be a bit more chubby

— big as in “Big Beefy Polar Bear”

— has GIANT fluffy paws; sometimes, when the crew compares paw sizes with him they are just... smol (& also generally compared to him)

— listens to The Wellerman a lot

— possibly the highest pain tolerance out of the crew and Octo-Agents

— knows Russian because of Natquik

— a part of his brain is always awake, causing him to be alert at all times (kinda reminds me of Mad-Eye Moody’s CONSTANT VIGILANCE)

— canon, but sees Octopod as ‘home’ 🩵

KWAZII

— sleeps with a slightly worn teddy bear that has an eye patch (it was a gift from Calico Jack)

— has ADHD and Dyslexia

— also has heterochromia, a green eye and a brown eye, and the green eye is covered

— cannot stay still, literally has to move or he feels like he’ll explode right then and there

— the most acrobatic of the crew

— probably gay or pan

— FTM trans 🏳‍⚧

— adding: bonds with Tweak and Tominnow

— likes dressing up in costumes, especially dresses because f*ck gender roles

— half-Caribbean (dad’s side)

— was abandoned / disowned by his family because he wasn’t the “traditional” kind of pirate and was instead kind and such

— like already said, is not like the rest of his family ; but does look up to his grandfather, Calico Jack, a role model of his

— sometimes gets sad that some creatures get scared of him since he’s a pirate but it’s part of his identity and he doesn’t want to throw it away either

— one of Barnacles’ closest friends and would die for him (as if Barnacles would let it happen, but hypothetically speaking)

— sees Tweak as a sister figure and will go to her if he needs a quick pat on the back (here)

— sees Peso as a brother and teases him but if someone so much as looks at Peso wrong? he’s getting out his sword

— even if he doesn’t always listen when given orders, he looks up to Barnacles (both figuratively and literally) and has a lot of respect for him, just like the entire crew

— unlike Barnacles, Kwazii’s like: “are you okay?” “no I’m literally f*cking dying” *as he’s perfectly fine*

— is in the Sick Bay a lot; usually because he did something stupid/reckless and got hurt

— great immune system but still manages to get sick easier than, for example, Barnacles

— an orange cat (iykyk)

— very cat-like and out of the crew he acts most like the animal he is

— he loafs; once in the HQ on top of Dashi’s workstation and she just pushed him off (he hissed at her, in a playful manner of course)

— has a bad habit of chewing on stuff and accidentally leaving his stuff everywhere

— kneads his pillow before he goes to bed

— sheds a bit too and used to let Barnacles borrow his shedding brush

— adding: eventually just got him his own as a gift because lord knows the Captain needs it (it’s definitely one of the ones that release the brushed fur in neat circles) .

PESO

— early 30s (like, c’mon, he’s a doctor and went to medical school, be fr)

— shortest, if we don’t count the Vegimals

— Chilean (a part of Antarctica belongs to Chile) .

— knows different languages other than English, like Spanish and a bit of Latin

— as already said, him and Barnacles are Cold Weather Buddies™

— loves cold and snow and ice

— cannot handle heat for a long time

— when stressed, he makes a nest out of blankets and pillows to sleep in

— from a large family of penguins; he likes having that kind of family because they all look out for each other

— adding: though it’s possible that growing up in such a big family / around many other penguins he got compared to them quite a bit and/or never fully got to shine

— sometimes mixes up names and gets everyone confused, himself included

— has always tried to be a good example for his younger brother, Pinto

— has a little round stone that he hangs on to ‘just in case’ (some penguins give round stones to the other penguin that they want to mate with—adorable)

— speaking of rocks, he collects them religiously

— has anxiety, but manages it just fine

— was very dependent on others and always compared himself to his friends / the rest of the crew (mainly Barnacles and Kwazii) .

— adding: has become more confident in his skills and himself overall over time

— best friends with Shellington and Kwazii

— idolizes Barnacles, but also looks up to Kwazii because of his braveness (even if it’s mostly Kwazii being reckless than anything else)

— Barnacles is like a father figure to him .

— gets really worried when one of the crew (*cough* Barnacles, Kwazii, Shellington *cough*) end up in the Sick Bay

— very shy and gets easily scared by Kwazii’s spooky stories but is brave when needed

— adding: bravery isn’t not being scared, it’s doing what you need to while scared—which is exactly what Peso does (“courage isn’t the absence of fear, but rather acting in spite of it” and Peso is the epitome of that)

— loves playing the xylophone & is good at it

— great listener and an awesome comforter; also the crew’s unofficial therapist™

— definitely a good cuddler, I mean come on, look at him! he looks so soft

— would (aggressively) support you if you came out to him

— preens sometimes, just sort of fixing up his feathers and some (Kwazii) of the crew are like ‘why are you stabbing yourself??’

— adding: Shellington explains it every time and Peso tries not to laugh

— super fast swimmer (“I’m fast as f boiiii—”)

— flaps when he’s happy and sometimes does a little dance too

— often studies when he’s not busy; sometimes with Shellington

SHELLINGTON

— early 30s (younger than Pearl), older than Peso

— also collects rocks (though not as much as Peso)

— is not only allergic to sea urchins (which is, of course, canon) but also certain mussels

— autistic; one of his stims (besides “jumpin’ jellyfish!”) is shaking his hands excitedly

— Scottish (yes I know otters don’t live there but idc, he and Pearl were born there end of discussion)

— probably pan

— awkward and clumsy but very sweet

— scared of heights (canon)

— is in the Sick Bay a lot; usually because he accidentally hurt himself in the Lab

— owns a pop-up bed in his laboratory, which he barely uses

— adding: messed up sleep schedule pt.1

— sometimes sleeps with the Vegimals like stuffed animals (they don’t mind)

— can’t sleep if he isn’t holding something; has a little plushie he holds paws with, just like otters hold hands in real life

— sleeps with a picture of him and Pearl under his pillow

— facetimes Pearl and Periwinkle every week or Pearl facetimes him

— gives Tweak anxiety when he’s driving a Gup because as we all know, he can’t drive

— fascinated by the way Kwazii drives Gups and is determinded to learn how to drive

— besides marine biology, he also has an interest in linguistics which would be how he learned to understand Vegimalese and other creatures even when they’re like muffling or have their mouths full (see this post)

— knows Latin (bro’s a scientist, c’mon)

— when he finally learned Vegimalese, he cried and almost squished the Vegimals

— has a preference for kelp cakes and clam sandwiches

— likes to top his kelp cakes with hot sauce; however, too much upsets his stomach

I like to imagine that Shellmet, Shady and 8-bit live together just because they all use the heaviest weapons of their class lol

and also i have a little headcanon that NO ONE is aware that Shady has heterochromia because he always has the scope covering his eye

babe wake up new squid lore just dropped

This is just me trying my damndest to rationalise inkling development, mainly how all the guts move around in the body. The internal anatomy is pretty rough, but it gets my point across.

All Inkfish hatch with only four limbs, but they eventually grow more as they get older. This totals to 8 in octolings and 10 in inklings.

the digestive and respiratory tracts are also completely separate from each other up until around age 2-3, where the trachea and esophagus fuse together and inkfish then gains the ability to speak.

Very young paralarvae are fed bits of meat as it's all they can really digest as their digestive tracts are rather short. However as the torso develops, the intestines also elongate which makes it a lot easier for the little squid to digest tougher things (like cellulose/plants and other junk). It opens up a lot more dietary options too.

They will have no problem chewing anything though, as they have very powerful and sharp beaks right from birth. And kids LOVE to chew on things, so hide your computer charger and keys. Even worse when you've got a squid with sucker claws, it's like having a boneless cat with a hyperactivity disorder and a can opener for a mouth. Nightmares.

An actual question which is pretty popular in the Splatoon fandom, how do you think lings wash themselves? Keep themselves clean. Canonically it is stated that water affects them.

Well I actually think I got a pretty good idea of this one !

I've made a little illustrated guide which pretty much summarizes it all, but here is my thought process beneath it anyways. (Long post buckle up)

So, while it's true that in my mind their ink is already taking care of most of their dirt, one can only swim into their own body fluids before it starts to reek. Especially while being a(n ink)fish. Besides, enemy ink inevitably creates irritations if not properly cleaned off at least once or twice a day. (Off The Hook advises to clean your tentacles thoroughly after a match canonically.)

Now about the water issue, the main thing to keep in mind is that it's mentioned it dissolves Inkfish, sure, but only if they are submerged in it (because ink is less dense that water). So I think that they can take water drops, although it's also mentioned (in a game dev interview) that their skin actually breaks really easily.

But they CAN clean themselves nevertheless ; they just have to follow a few rules.

Absolutely NO BATHS.

Showers only, but put on the lightest drop setting, to the point the water feels more like drizzle (the type of rain they endure the best), just enough to get them moist and allow them to get themselves clean.

(There are specially designed shower heads on the marketplace for that, although it's the norm to have a shower with multiple options. It's recommended to always test the shower when looking for a new place, and use a portable spawner for the first times to be extra secure. Also, check your water pressure before going for a shower.)

Be gentle with your skin and tentacles while cleaning. Use foamy soaps, preferably, and soft sponges. If you're too rough, you might break the skin.

Only run the water to get yourself moisturized, then to wash the soaps. Not any more than needed.

At any time, if it starts to sting, or you feel weak, cut the water and take a break. Listen to your body.

If you don't have the time to take a shower, if you're not feeling like it or simply don't have a shower, there are always specialized body wipes available anywhere in stores. Fitting different kinds of skins & tentacles, with various perfumes, they are ideal to be used between Turf Wars or for a quick groom on the go. You can even clean yourself integraly this way if you wish, but please if you must do that in public, do so in Swim Form. Be decent.

(However, keep in mind the body wipes may be somewhat cheap and required to be at least recyclable, and also a huge market/job source, they still represent a budget, and important waste. Avoid resorting to these only. Water is in most places paid for by the community.)

In any way, do not neglect your hygiene. Else you may develop irritations, itching, dry & crusty tentacles (especially in choppy tentacuts), infections if nontreated injuries, and of course bad odor, which gets pretty bad as you count as a fish. All of these can get you mocked of and ostracized, as Freshness comes from having your turf and yourself figured out and taken well care of (we like to show that off), and unlike you may think- YOUR PEERS NOTICE.

And, of course, always brush your beak and scrub your tongue at least twice a day. Bad hygiene within the beak is the least tolerable, squiddos <3

And so yeah, those are their golden rules when it comes to hygiene. As you can see, I might have gotten a little overboard with it, but I wanted to make it feel like a legit cleaning guide, as I suspect that's something that is taught thoroughly to young Inkfish.

They have various illustrated child books/notices about cleaning safety, and probably have at least one mandatory class about that when they're in elementary school or younger. Being fresh 'n shiny is pretty important, and they are taught to take care of their turf/living space and of themselves, because they need that so they can then properly show off. So they are taught how to do it properly and safely early on, and they're not kidding about that.

I mean in a social system where the store managers can straight up refuse to serve you if you're deemed not fresh enough, you've got to be a little serious when it comes to your personal figure.
