Zeitloser Folktronica: Paulette Wright
Was macht gutes Songwriting aus? Was macht Musik zu einem Ohrwurm oder gar Lieblingslied? Wie wird ein Lied unsterblich? Die Antwort liegt auf der Hand für diejenigen, die sich treiben lassen - im Strom der Zeit. Wann schafft man es noch? Die Zeit zu vergessen, ohne es zu bemerken. Die Musik wieder und wieder abzuspielen, ohne sich daran sattzuhören. Eine Kunst an sich, ohne Kunst zu schaffen.
Paulette Wright hat dieses gewisse Etwas, das es braucht, um einen zu fesseln und ihr verzaubert zu lauschen, ohne dass man selbst merkt, wie die Zeit verstreicht und schneller und schneller voranschreitet. Ihre Stimme klingt so nahbar, unberechenbar und gefühlvoll, dass ihre Lieder direkt ins Ohr gehen, in die Herzen ihrer Zuhörer*innen vordringen und sich dort niederlassen.

Der Zeitpunkt wirkt im Nachhinein wie ein direkt umgesetzter Jahresvorsatz: Nämlich an Neujahr 2013 veröffentlichte die französisch-britische Singer-Songwriterin ihre ersten beiden Songs “Simple” und “By then” über Bandcamp, vom Klang erinnernd an Größen wie Feist oder This Is the Kit.
Stückweise, mit der Veröffentlichung einzelner Songs über Soundcloud, tastete sich daraufhin die Sängerin, Pianistin, Gitarristin und Cellistin an ihre Debüt-EP heran: Noch bevor ihre erste EP “From One to Another” im Juni 2016 erscheint, publiziert sie einen Monat vorher eigenhändig eine zusätzliche, selbst produzierte EP unter dem Namen “Imperfect HomeDraft recordings”. Auf dieser Platte findet sich auch der später bei ARTE akustisch dargebotene Song “Beyond the Need” wieder. Verzaubernd ehrliches Songwriting trifft auf eine glasklare Stimme, die alle Erinnerungen eines Lebens hervorruft und gleichzeitig Wunden im Nu heilen lässt.

2016 feierte die Französin mit britischen Wurzeln, wie gesagt, ihr Debüt bei ARTE. Zwei Jahre später verstarb Paulette Wright im Alter von 28 Jahren.
2019, zum einjährigen Todestag von Paulette Wright, veröffentlichte ihre Familie die EP “Ineffable” mit acht ausgewählten Liedern ihrer kurzen Karriere.
Es bricht einem das Herz, so einen Rohdiamanten verloren zu haben und dass die Welt und ihre Familie um so ein Talent trauern muss. Der einzige bleibende Trost: Was unter uns weilt, ist ihr Werk. Ihre Stimme und ihr Gesang. Dieses funkelnde Talent bleibt und strahlt bis auch der oder die Letzte verstanden hat, welches Glück wir Erdlinge hatten und welchen Verlust die Welt erlitten hat.

Imaike may seem like just another neighborhood to the layman, but after enough nights on the town in Nagoya, one would find that it is actually a thriving district littered with spots for frequent live music and other arts. Plastic Factory is one of these gems that attracts the bold and the weird, artists and fans alike. If you visit more than once, you’re bound to see a recurring face because Plastic Factory is usually a good time that brings people back for more.
Sometimes Plastic Factory is a packed house where you can’t see someone on the other side of the room. This Saturday night had a little more intimate setting however. That’s not at all a polite way of saying no one was there. It was still full of roaring applause and other forms of exclamation. I simply mean this show had more of the atmosphere of a house show or a big group of friends watching each other take turns on instruments in a garage. Human Name and Masattack’s Steven Stringer harped on this sentiment when he opened the night by stating “Welcome to Musical Smorgasbord, where we have more cables on stage than we know what to do with.”
HNAMA is a two-man act that can be described as “very experimental.” Their sound involves a lot of live looping guitar riffs and vocals. Looping would become a running theme in the night. At one point the audience could feel the different layers pulsating over one another in a barrage of sonic unfamiliarity. I use the word, “unfamiliarity,” because the music began to feel unpredictable. It definitely wasn’t contrived or anything like that. I heard an audience member say at this point, “I feel like I’m on LSD right now.” I hope the duo wouldn’t be offended by my calling their music “weird,” but I feel like that’s what they’re going for anyways. Beck and Captain Beefheart at the weirdest points in their careers would be intrigued.
The next act was another two-man band referred to as “Futsū No Banana.” If your Japanese is no good, it means “Ordinary Banana.” They were the only instrumental band of the night and this set had a real garage rock vibe to it. I could actually imagine it going over well in a park *cough cough.* The riffs and drums were solid, but the in between banter was also a plus. By request, they finished the set with the early 90’s Power Rangers theme song, but couldn’t quite finish the tune, gave up towards the end, and laughed it off as good sports. It was a funny moment for everyone.
The two male pair acts were then followed by two solo female artists. The first of which was the dazzling Aichi queen of cabaret, May Chu Chu メイチュチュ. She is a multi-talented artist who can be seen belting out tunes with her rockabilly band or hosting a wide range of respectable events with a sharp edge of wit and humor. Tonight she was flying solo on the mic with only the help of a phone hooked up to the PA. Her acts always involve crowd participation and one memorable moment of the night consisted of May Chu Chu assigning different factions of the crowd to each sing a single word of the chorus in Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now.”
The following female artist was truly a unique and creative individual named Rishao who composes the most interesting atmospheric songs with a keyboard, sampler, and other surprising instruments that she would loop live on the spot. As it was my second time seeing her perform, an audience member asked me what Rishao’s sound is like while she was setting up. I started by saying, “it’s electronic,” and the other person asked “Like EDM?” “No, not quite.” I tried to find comparisons but couldn’t. “Have you heard of Crystal Castles? Wait, it’s not like that. You know Portishead? No, nevermind. It’s like Bjork. Actually, not really. Com Truise….what am I saying?” The truth is Rishao’s sound doesn’t give the impression that it’s influenced by anything. It seems like a pure artistic representation of one’s self. I can’t describe it any better than that. Rishao is Rishao and you have to experience it yourself to get what I’m talking about.
Minus Rishao, the other acts all followed with second sets. Futsū no Banana delivered a much more satisfying second set filled with post-rock guitar grooves, building tension on the drums, and overall a more complete sense of songwriting. There was even a metal track aptly titled, “Heavy.” Not to take anything away from the songs in the first set, this is just the time that they really shined. May Chu Chu took the stage again and performed a hilarious music bit teaching colors of the rainbow with a medley of iconic pop culture numbers involving lyrics that the use red, yellow, etc. I won’t spoil the act if you haven’t seen it, but I was thrilled for an excuse to chant a certain gothic metal band from the 90’s. Human Name and Masattack closed out the night by hypnotizing the crowd with more sounds from another realm and overall this show was a very enjoyable evening between friends and musicians.

the main thing is to have shay’s even be a woc and i would also love if she’d say in canon that she’s pansexual. i feel like that explicit representation is lacking in tv (and sort of in the skamverse???? has any even explicitly said “pansexual”????? i can’t remember lol). on a story level, i’d love it if shay and am!even met at prom/homecoming committee (led by kelsey ofc) bc cfgc got roped into performing and that was their kosegruppa. and for purely selfish reasons, i’d love if am!even was a dancer😊

the bias is real here but skamfr!!! i just love how heavily they used piano-based music and the symbolism it held in relation to lucas’ musical talent and how he played piano for eliott as a means of opening up and showing a side of himself that he doesn’t typically show his friends. across the season, piano music became a way of indicating watershed moments in their relationship and i absolutely adore it (plus, skamfr put some indielectronica bangers in there too)

London artist Khushi continues to melt me with some of the most breathtaking, airy music of late. Just listen to today's new track In The Sun, a wispy delight with abundance buoyant hop. It's a folksy electronic pop tune that at times reminds me greatly of Sufjan Stevens, but more alt pop leaning. Khushi just released his debut EP Phantoms on Laissez Faire Club. Revisit his amazing video and song Magpie below, which first brought him to my attention last year.

L: Joywave - "Tongues (feat. KOPPS)"
Bad. Ass. Joywave warps vocal samples and turns them into percussive gold in "Tongues". Upon first listen, you've got no idea where the song is heading during the crescendo-ing, expanding intro. Suddenly, the verse drops in unhindered by the growing percussive backdrop. As it develops, you get a chance to familiarize yourself with Joywave's pop vocals before it's a complete PARTY of sounds during the chorus.
Trust me - you'll want to listen to this with everything else off for a moment... the "nowhere for them to run" lyric at 2:28 leads into a surprise I won't ruin... so dramatic it's practically cinematic. Get Joywave's EP, How Do You Feel? on iTunes here.

Although I don't actually play Grand Theft Auto at all, the new release of GTA V has been an exciting prospect for me regardless, as along with billions of dollars worth of profit, the games release also brought about a torrent of new music releases from artists big and small. Riding high on the GTA inspired musical wave is The Chain Gang Of 1974, an indietronica project based out of Denver, Colorado.
With vocals that remind me of Kele from Bloc Party and soaring synth melodies to rival the likes of St. Lucia and Pacific Air, their new single 'Sleepwalking' is no sleepy affair at all. Packed full of dark, towering synth melodies, 'Sleepwalking' has an intriguing vibrancy and electric energy attached to it, that is designed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I can see exactly how this fits in place within the GTA universe.

Indie... O que? - Por Rapha
Pra quem não conhece ou nunca ouviu falar, indietronica é uma mistura de indie, eletrônica, rock e pop, é isso mesmo, todos esses gêneros juntos. Como eu disse, esse gênero surgiu nos anos 90, mas só começou a ser notado a partir de 2000. Algumas bandas atualmente ganharam destaque pelo seu som diferenciado, encantando o público jovem, e aposto um doce que tão vai encantar vocês. Sério, é impossível não gostar de pelo menos uma música de alguma banda que escolhi para colocar no post, a batida acaba te dominando e no final não sai da sua cabeça por nada. Bem, vou para de enrolar e apresentar algumas das bandas que tocam indietronica, que particularmente, eu adoro. E claro, falando um pouquinho sobre cada uma.
1) Crystal Castles
Crystal Castles é uma banda de Toronto, Canadá, e tem de apenas dois integrantes, Ethan que produz e toca vários instrumentos. Alice, a menina que fica nos vocais. Eles estão no ramo da música desde 2004, e presentes até hoje com três álbuns já lançados, Crystal Castles, Crystal Castles II e Crystal Castles III. Sim, esses são os nomes dos álbuns. Engraçado, né? Além disso, a dupla faz vários remixes para outras bandas. O single Air War foi usado pela marca Toshiba, em uma propaganda onde se lançava produtos de alta resolução. A mesma música também entrou na trilha sonora do game, FIFA 2010, assim como Celestica, que entrou no PES 2011. Not In Love, se não estou enganada, a ouvi tocar também no jogo, FIFA 2012. E foi justamente a que eu coloquei aqui embaixo, com parceria do cantor Robert Smith, da banda The Cure, teve a gravação do clipe por Nanalew, um canal de vlogue no youtube. Confira!
2) Miami Horror
Miami Horror surgiu em 2007, com quatro integrantes, Benjamin Plant, que é o produtor da banda. Josh Moriarty, tem o poder em suas mãos uma guitarra. Aaron Shanaham, o cara da bateria. E Daniel Whitechurch sobre os teclados. Os caras vem da Melbourne, Austrália. Eles têm apenas um álbum,Illumination, que trás vários singles muito legais, como Sometimes, que selecionei para apresentar a banda a vocês.
3) Foster The People
Foster The People. Nossa, é uma das minhas bandas favoritas. Posso babar um pouco neles? Ok, ok, vamos ao que interessa. Eles são de Los Angeles, Califórnia. O som dos caras vem tomando conta de algumas paradas por onde passa. Em 2011 a banda ganhou como Novo Artista do Ano na premiação do SharkOne Awards, mas não para por ai, logo em 2012, ano passado, eles emplacaram comPumped Up Kicks na Billboard Music Awards. Hmm, acho que deu para sentir um pouco do poder que esses caras ganharam. Mark Foster é vocalista, guitarrista e tecladista, esse menino é multifuncional! Já Mark Pontius fica apenas na batera. E Cubbie Fink toca baixo e da um apoio moral com o vocal para Mark. Eles têm a banda desde 2009. Pouco tempo, né? Com apenas um álbum de estúdio Torches, que sinceramente, é ótimo, eles conseguiram lançar cinco clipes. Vou parar de falar deles, senão o Foster The People vai virar atração do post. Deixo Waste aqui, porque seria sem graça colocar uma música que geral conhece.
4) Hot Chip
Hot Chip, hum... HOT! Certo, parei com as brincadeiras bobas. Eles são uma banda britânica, salve os britânicos, formada em 2000. Receberam indicação para o prêmio Grammy, como melhor gravação de dance music, com a música Ready For The Floor, muito boa, além de chegar em número seis nas paradas da UK Singles Chart, Reino Unido. A banda é composta por cinco caras. Alexis Taylor toma conta dos vocais, sintetizador, violão, percussão e piano. Nossa quanta coisa gente! O Joe Goddard também fica nos vocais, dando uma ajuda ao seu camarada Alexis, sintetizador e percussão. Já o Owen Clarke pertence à guitarra, baixo, sintetizador e percussão(também?). Felix Martin fica nas baterias eletrônicas, sintetizadores e programação. Bem, agora o nosso amigo aqui, Al Doyle, deve ser uma máquina, porque o cidadão toca guitarra, fliscorne, tambor de aço(?), até isso você toca cumpadi?, além de ser é backing vocal e sintetizador, ele fica na percussão e no baixo. Ufa, pensei que não ia acabar. Desde que começaram eles lançaram cinco álbuns, Coming on Strong, The Warning,Made in the Dark, One Life Stand e In Our Heads. Acho que deu para vocês conhecerem um pouco da banda, não é? Escutem então One Life Stand, muito legal.
5) MGMT
MGMT. Acho que estou vendo a Nanda dar um ataque histérico ali do lado. Ela adora essa banda. Então acho bom eu falar bem deles, caso contrário, vou acabar apanhando. MGMT é uma banda que foi formada em 2005, no Brooklyn... Acho que é só, já falei demais sobre eles. Certo, vou continuar, estão me olhando de cara feia aqui. Eles têm três álbuns de estúdio, Climbing to New Lows,Congratulations e Oracular Spectacular, que entrou em 12º na UK Albums Chart. Eles têm lançados sete videoclipes desde então. Esses meninos são bons, tanto que a revista Rolling Stone os colocou em primeiro lugar em 2008 como Artista Mais Esperado, além dos caras terem ocupado o nono lugar no TOP 10 da BBC, como Música Mais Votada, mas não parou por ali, a Last.fm os nomearam como Artista Mais Escutado, do mesmo ano, na lista de artistas revelações. É isso ai, MGMT botando pra quebrar. Como se não já bastassem eles terem entrado em uma edição da revista Rolling Stone, eles voltaram, e dessa vez na lista dos melhores álbuns da década em décimo oitavo lugar com o brilhanteOracular Spectacular! Estou falando que eles são bons, e não duvidem disso. A banda possui cinco integrantes. Andrew VanWyngarden pertence ao vocal, mas também toca guitarra, teclado, baixo e bateria. Ben Goldwasser também fica no vocal, mas toca teclado e guitarra. James Richardson toca na guitarra, vocal de apoio, teclado e percussão. Matt Asti é baixieta. E Will Berman toca bateria, percussão e vocal de apoio. Bem, acho que já está bom. Selecionei a música Kids para representar a banda.
6) The Naked and Famous
The Naked And Famous. Ulala. Eles são de Auckland (?), (onde fica isso?), a sim, fica na Nova Zelândia. A banda tem como integrante, Alisa Xayalith que canta e compõe. Thom Powers que também canta, compõe e toca guitarra. David Beadle que fica no baixo. Aaron Short que programa e produz as músicas. E não menos importante, Jesse Wood que toca bateria. A banda foi formada em 2008 e lançaram sete clipes até agora. The Naked And Famous foi indicada como banda revelação pela Sound of 2011, que teve publicação na BBC. Eles ganharam diversos prêmios no New Zealand Music Awards, na edição de 2011, e acabaram sendo atração do festival, entre eles está melhor álbum do ano, com Passive Me, Aggressive You, lançado em 2010, além de melhor single, com Young Blood, que é justamente a música que coloquei aqui no post.
7) Owl City
Owl City, que na verdade não é uma banda, e sim, um projeto musical de Adam Young. Um cara é de Owatonna, Estado Unido, que resolveu virar músico em 2007, criando assim o Owl City. Mas ele não é qualquer cara, Adam levou seu projeto com o primeiro disco, Ocean Eyes, ao primeiro lugar da Billboard Hot 100, com a música Fireflies, chegando ao topo das paradas dos Estados Unidos e Canadá, além de ter sido um das canções mais baixadas no iTunes. Isso em 2009. Olha o poder, sentiu, né? Falei que ele não era qualquer cara. Quer saber mais uma coisa sobre o Owl City? Então, ai vai. A canção The Technicolor Phase fez parte da trilha sonora do filme Alice nos Pais das Maravilhas, que foi dirigido por Tim Burton. Legal, não é? Adam já lançou três álbuns desde o inicio,Ocean Eyes, All Things Bright and Beautiful e The Midsummer Station. Como Fireflies foi tão bem vista, não podia deixar de colocá-la aqui.
8) M83
M83 é um grupo musical de Antibes, França. Teve formação em 2001 por cinco homens, Anthony Gonzalez, Yann Gonzalez, Morgan Kibby, Loïc Maurin e Jordan Lawlor. O nome da banda se refere à galáxia M83 (?), eu não entendo dessas coisas, mas tudo bem, o nome da banda não é meu mesmo. Seu primeiro álbum lançado, M83, não teve muito sucesso, mas seu segundo álbum, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, conseguiu um pouco de reconhecimento no meio da música, dois anos depois, eles criam mais um álbum, Before the Dawn Heals Us, o terceiro do grupo, vindo logo depois Digital Shades Vol. 1, em 2007. Mais tarde em abril de 2008 chegou Saturdays = Youth, que teve influência à década de 80. Em 2009 eles saíram em turnê com as bandas Depeche Mode e Kings of Leon. Hurry Up, We're Dreaming foi lançado em 2011, contendo faixas sombrias e épicas, com esse álbum, finalmente eles conseguiram alcançar as paradas de sucesso com o décimo quinto lugar na Billboard 200, com o single Midnight City.
9) Justice
Justice, uma dupla francesa, Gaspard Augé e Xavier de Rosnay, formada desde 2003. Que teve sucesso após de ter remixado a músca Never Be Alone, da banda Simia, em 2006. Só em 2007 que Justice lançou seu primeiro álbum de estúdio, †, sim, isso é uma cruz. O cenário de seus shows são famosos por te uma cruz gigante e branca, que brilha no palco. Bizarro. Os franceses têm o costume de remixar músicas para outros artista, entre elas está Electric Feel, do MGMT, LoveStoned, do Justin Timberlake, Womanizer, da Britney Spears, e muito mais, a lista é grande. Audio, Video, Disco é o mais recente álbum da dubla. Eles já lançaram sete clipes, entre eles está D.A.N.C.E., a música abaixo.
10) Ellie Goulding
Ellie Goulding conhecida pro seus cabelos rosa e a lateral da cabeça raspada(visual atual), se chama na verdade Elena Jane. É uma cantora britânica que compõe e toca guitarra, além de cantar, é claro. Começou sua carreira em 2007, mas só conseguiu chegar ao auge da fama em 2010, quando atingiu o topo na BBC Sound of 2010. A cantora tem quatro álbuns, Lights, Bright Lights que é relançamento do Lights, Lights US e Halcyon. No álbum Bright Lights teve a regravação da música Your Song, do Elton John, conseguindo chegar ao segundo lugar na UK Singles Chart, sendo a música mais bem colocada de Ellie. Em 2011, foi lançado o clipe Lights, onde a nossa garota de cabelos rosa(no clipe está loiro), dança em meio de um cenário psicodélico e toca instrumentos iluminados. Porém somente um ano depois, o single veio a fazer sucesso nas paradas americanas. Que tal dar uma conferida?
Gente, eu pareci um pinto no lixo escrevendo esse post. Por hoje foi só isso tudo. Quero agradecer ao um amigo, o Gui, que ficou a noite inteira na expectativa de ler a matéria, mas no ultimo momento sumiu. E também a todos que leram. Espero que tenham gostado tanto quanto eu.
