Opposition candidate Mohamed Muiz appeared to be headed for a win in the Maldives presidential runoff on Saturday, securing more than 53% of the vote after almost all the ballots were counted, local media reported. The election has turned into a virtual referendum on which regional power — India or China — will have the biggest influence in the Indian Ocean archipelago nation.[...]
Solih, who was first elected president in 2018, was battling allegations by Muiz that he had allowed India an unchecked presence in the country. Muiz’s party, the People’s National Congress, is viewed as heavily pro-China. Solih has insisted that the Indian military’s presence in the Maldives was only to build a dockyard under an agreement between the two governments and that his country’s sovereignty will not be violated. Muiz promised that if he won the presidency, he would remove Indian troops from the Maldives and balance the country’s trade relations, which he said were heavily in India’s favor.[...] Solih suffered a setback closer to the election when Mohamed Nasheed, a charismatic former president, broke away from his Maldivian Democratic Party and fielded his own candidate in the first round. He decided to remain neutral in the second round. Yameen, leader of the People’s National Congress, made the Maldives a part of China’s Belt and Road initiative during his presidency from 2013 to 2018. The initiative is meant to build railroads, ports and highways to expand trade — and China’s influence — across Asia, Africa and Europe.[...] “These five years have been the most peaceful and prosperous five years we’ve ever seen. We have had political peace, opposition candidates are not jailed every day,” said Abdul Muhusin, who said he voted for Solih in the runoff on Saturday. Another voter, Saeedh Hussein, said he chose Muiz because “I want the Indian military to leave Maldives.” “I don’t believe the Maldivian military has any control. Only Muiz can change these things and make the Indian military leave Maldives,” he said.

🏎️💨 THE FORMULA 1 TAG GAME! 🏎️💨: tagged by @avida-heidia-5, thank you!!
(this has been in my drafts since January and I had completely forgotten to post it, so I'm going to fix that immediately. I am so sorry this took forever!)
1. Who or what got you into F1?
My Dad. The best memories I have of my Dad are watching F1 races together when I was growing up. idk how long he'd been an F1 fan by the time I was born, but I still have a very old Ferrari hat of his.
2. Who was the very first F1 driver you supported? Do you support them now? Have your opinions on them differed or stayed the same since then?
As a kid Michael because of my Dad (according to my Gran when I really really little I used to run around going "vroom vroom Schumacher!"). When I got back into watching F1 in 2013 I supported Jenson and Seb, and I still do! They're very much my beloveds.
3. Who’s your current favourite F1 driver?
Lewis!
4. Is there a driver pairing or pairings you support? What made you attracted to that pairing in the first place?
the dream teams of Seb, Britta and Antti & Lewis and Bono. I am a sucker for colleagues turned besties.
And as for teammates, Lewis and Jenson are my favourites. I frequently go onto YouTube and look up old McLaren promo videos because they're just hilarious in the best way (also shoutout to Series 1 of Tooned, I still have it on DVD!).
5. Do your parents, siblings or relatives have a favourite team and/or favourite driver(s)?
Nope, I'm the only F1 fan in my family. My parents (Mum and Step-Dad) have the odd opinion on some drivers but as a whole they're very unbothered 😅
6. Do you have any favourite races? Are there any that stand out to you the most?
I have so many for various different reasons. Silverstone 2014 & 2018 because I was there. India 2013 and Singapore 2019 for Seb reasons, Hungary 2019 and Turkey 2020 for Lewis reasons. Hungary 2021 for the whole of lap 1 and also for Seb reasons. Bahrain 2014 also sticks out because it was such a good race long battle between Nico and Lewis.
7. Do you have a favourite circuit? Can be from the past or from the current calendar.
Silverstone and Marina Bay (Singapore)
8. Have you ever been to an F1 race in real life? Feel free to tell us your experience going to one if you like.
As mentioned above I have been ridiculously lucky to go to the British GP twice in 2014 and 2018. The first time my parents organised it and the second time was via coach trip (which honestly I would recommend, it took out a lot of the stress in terms of getting to the track).
Obviously it's been a while but both years were absolutely amazing. Silverstone is a brilliant circuit both in terms of spectator facilities and seating options (idk if they still have it, but for our weekend tickets we had roving grandstand seats for the Saturday which meant we could sit in different parts of the track for FP3 and Quali - Luffield and Village are great spots!).
The atmosphere at the track is also just incredible, even during a practice session. They also open the Porsche experience centre and have cars on display (including cars that have won Le Mans!!)
I did post some pictures at the time from both trips under the Silverstone 2014 and Silverstone 2018 tags and I'm happy to post more if people want!
9. Have you ever met an F1 driver in real life?
I have not but I know someone who has 😅
10. Do you have a favourite F1 car? If so, what is it?
I have a colossal soft spot for the Brawn GP BGP001, she will always be famous 🤍💛
11. Do you have a favourite one win wonder?
Esteban Ocon purely for everything that was Hungary 2021.
12. Do you have any favourite quotes from the F1 world? This can either be inspirational or hilarious.
Lewis' post-race radio from Turkey 2020 and a (very) long list of Seb quotes

Small Business Saturday
Small businesses often are overlooked by customers who are enticed by larger companies, and this can adversely affect the local economy in more negative ways than might appear on the surface level.
The rise of shopping malls and large chain stores such as Walmart and other retailers has caused irreversible damage to Main Street in the last half-century or so, and it’s paramount to remember the importance of supporting local small businesses.
After all, why should we not celebrate the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship, as exemplified by small business owners who take the risk of following their dreams?
After all, it’s a common thing for politicians to talk about supporting Main Street over big business, and how small business owners often face greater hardships than larger companies. Since Small Business Saturday is held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving Day, it falls right during the peak shopping periods of the year.
History of Small Business Saturday
The 1960s saw the rise of the American shopping mall, and the decades since have seen large chain retailers further cementing their position in terms of taking over the retail sphere and displacing smaller, family-run businesses.
This model has spread further throughout the world, and chain retailers have been usurping small businesses’ market share worldwide in the last few decades. That being said, the difference is most stark in countries like the US, where small businesses have often been obliterated within a year or two of some large chain retailer coming to town and opening up shop – in India and much of Southeast Asia, shopping malls coexist with small shops largely because they serve different markets – as has been noted in the past, the corner shop is not going anywhere anytime soon in India because customers can purchase items on credit, and that’s just something that you’ll never be able to do in a Walmart or BigBazaar.
In the United States, the context is different, though. Different economic realities combined with different cultural ideas about how small businesses operate has ultimately been more harmful to those businesses in developed countries than in developing economies. And with all of the odds stacked against them, small businesses in the US need a day in their honor.
Small Business Saturday is a relatively recent phenomenon – the first one was in Roslindale Village, Massachusetts in 2010 as a counterpart to Black Friday (which features big-box retailers, and its anti-consumerist counterpart, Buy Nothing Day targets big business).
Small Business Saturday was originally sponsored by American Express and the non-profit National Trust for Historic Preservation. From the very start, the day has been promoted through advertising on both social media and more traditional means such as television and radio advertisement. Since 2013, Small Business Saturday has also existed in the UK following the success of its American counterpart.
How to celebrate Small Business Saturday
You may be wondering how to celebrate Small Business Saturday since it is possible that you might have been lead to believe that small businesses are a thing of the past. That, however, is not true, and you can dispel such ignorance by observing Small Business Saturday.
As a consumer, you can choose to spend your money at local small businesses on this day rather than going to the big-box retailers at the local mall. After all, the best way to support small businesses is to go and spend money at them rather than somewhere else.
You can also tell your friends to do the same, perhaps making a point of organizing a shopping day where you only visit small, local enterprises instead of chain stores. While you may or may not end up paying more, it’s important to remember that spending your money at a small business generally puts more money into the local economy than if you’re spending that money in a chain store.
Some small business owners find that Small Business Saturday is a great time to run marketing promotions, as they can further capitalize on the increased foot traffic (from the already busy holiday shopping season), and on their online traffic.
If you own a small business, you can run some promotion for the day, and otherwise, put up a post on your Facebook page. If your small business does not have a Facebook page nor any other online presence, you should seriously consider taking Small Business Saturday to go ahead and do that. So support your local economy, and go out and buy things from a small business today.

Ian Jack’s last published work was a column in the Guardian of Saturday 22 October, in which he invoked what the BBC meant to his generation, born as or after the second world war ended. It meant, in his telling, a vast amount, as the corporation’s broadcasts drilled themselves into lives then lived almost entirely outside the all-embracing media domains of today.
Schoolboys, then, were being “almost Freemasonic in their mysteries”, repeating lines such as “He’s fallen in the water” from the Goon Show or “Stone me!” from Hancock’s Half Hour, that only initiates, addicts to 1950s airwaves, could know (a signature trick, to insert a word – here, “Freemasonic” – whose meaning needed thought before it clicked). Ian was of an upper-working-class generation: a boy helping his mother at the hand-turned mangle while Oh What a Beautiful Morning, from Oklahoma!, crackled out from the Light Programme: he imagined the song had been there always – and the “bright, golden haze on the meadow” was there always for him, a spurt of remembered joy.
Ian, who has died aged 77 after a short illness, wrote, when possible, slowly, each paragraph polished to perfection, before moving on. While, as a foreign correspondent, he was familiar with the “six paras by seven o’clock or it’s not in” school of reportage, he really wanted time. The designation “long–form journalism” was minted for him: a style clearly his from the first lines.
From the mid-70s till the 2010s Ian often visited India, and for a spell lived in Kolkata. The resulting collection of essays, Mofussil Junction (2013), is a series of “encounters”, experienced as far as possible as Indians experience it – on crowded trains, and in tea shops and down-at-heel hotels. “I became a frequenter of the neglected and obscure. During the monsoon in Jalandhar I stayed in a damp room that was somehow located under a cinema; at Jamalpur in a hostel for engine drivers; at Maldia (and quite a few other junctions) in the station retiring room.”
The historian Ramachandra Guha wrote of his essays that there is “a real feel for culture in nature, for how different kinds of Indians are embedded in the forests, fields, rivers, mountains, factories, and towns in which they live and die. One reason Ian Jack writes so well about India is that he is never in a hurry.” The strangeness is noted, but never with condescension.
Trying to find the birthplace of George Orwell – in Motihari, in Bihar state – he arrives with a headache, in part through re-reading 1984 on the bumpy car journey, observing (an offence against received intellectual opinion) that “as a novel it’s poor, as a prophecy it’s wrong, as an estimate of the human spirit it’s unforgivably bleak”.
The search for the true birthplace fails, but it contains another Jack trademark – the long parenthesis, an excursion into the British-created opium trade, gathered in India and sent to China, supervised by British officials, one of whom was Richard Blair, father of the Eric Blair who became known as Orwell. He connects the trade to the novel through doublethink: in the Indian case, the doublethink that allowed the imperialists to believe they were bringing enlightenment to the natives (Indian and Chinese) while getting one side to narcotise the other for profit.
Ian had a “thing” about Orwell: he was, after all, often doing something similar, trying to get a sense of life and work among people up against it, “blundering into other peoples’ lives”, as he put it in his 1987 collection, Before the Oil Ran Out. There he wrote of a journey to Wigan in the autumn of 1982, in the footsteps of Orwell’s Road to Wigan Pier, yet unable to discover the misery Orwell had. He found the cheapest room he could – £6 a night with breakfast – “but of the squalor that shocks I could find no trace” – continuing, another of Ian’s tricks, with the tiny particular – “the toilet roll was encased in knitted wool”.
He came into subjects crabwise. The Women and Children First in his 2009 collection The Country Formerly Known as Great Britain, patiently examining the myths of the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, had the first pages on his children, five and three, playing with a toy ship and an iceberg – “a ball of white paper”. After some discussion with a shopkeeper on a better toy version of the doomed ship, he considered the James Cameron 1997 film, thence as much to framings of the calamity, from George Bernard Shaw to Hans Magnus Enzensberger, who “wondered if … we were losing a proper sense of history”, as to the disaster (1,503 drowned, 703 saved).
This most refined of journalists did not go to university, but followed a hallowed apprenticeship route to Fleet Street. Born in Farnworth, now in Greater Manchester, at seven he moved with his mother, father and elder brother, Harry, to North Queensferry, on the coast of Fife: his father, Henry, had been an engineering craftsman in the navy, then worked at the same trade in various companies: his mother, Isa (nee Gillespie), the daughter of an Irishman who had served in the Royal Artillery in India, was a quality inspector in linen mills before marriage.
On leaving school, he enrolled for a librarian’s course: but he wanted to write, not to lend out, words – and did, first in the Cambuslang Advertiser, followed by the East Kilbride News. He was quickly taken up by the Glasgow-based Scottish Daily Express, and as quickly by the Sunday Times in 1970, in the Harold Evans era, where he edited a section, and moved to reporting and feature writing. He won several awards, including Journalist of the Year, and established both a growing reputation and a style.
In 1986 he started writing for the Observer and for magazines – he was considered for the editorship of the New Yorker – and three years later went back to editing at the newly created Independent on Sunday, first as a supplement editor, then as editor (1992-95).
In 1979 he married Aparna Bagchi; they divorced in 1992. At the Independent on Sunday he met Lindy Sharpe: they became partners, had two children, Bella and Alex, then married in 1998 – a close, mutually stimulating, marriage. The three survive him, along with Harry.
His departure from the Independent on Sunday meant no more Fleet Street: he went to edit the literary magazine Granta, itself an exercise in the long form, where new writing flourished. Under Ian, from 1995 to 2007, the writers included Monica Ali, AL Kennedy, Andrew O’Hagan and Zadie Smith, still flourishing.
Before his death, he was preparing a book about the Clyde, helped by (among others) the actor Bill Paterson, a native Clydesider in awe, in their talks, of Ian’s grasp of detail and meaning.
He moved through every one of his pieces, in damp Indian basements, toilets with knitted toilet-roll cover, his own living room – careful, querying, gentle but acutely tuned for falsities, contradictions, omissions, keeping the point waiting until the scaffolding of the piece is erected. It is the journalist as contemporary shaper of a Socratic dialogue, always kindly, yet with a “but what about…?” ever ready, to probe through to deeper revelations. No other British journalist was working at that level and he was still working when he died.

India has no plans to import wheat for now: Piyush Goyal
Tumblr media
India is not going to import wheat and its farmers are expected to reap a record crop to create a surplus of wheat stocks in the world’s second-largest producer of this grain, the trade minister said on Saturday. According to ground reports, the crop is quite good this year and the output is likely to reach a record of 114 million metric tons, Piyush Goyal said in a briefing to reporters.
Kisan App Last year, India outlawed wheat exports only to revive them in recent months following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine that caused an increase in global prices.
Krishi App The government has offloaded an estimated 6 million metric tons of wheat to local bulk buyers since June. 1, After the Food Corporation of India began selling the grain out of its warehouses. Even at the cost of selling wheat from its granaries for April 1, when the new marketing year starts, inventories are likely to be above the target of 7.46 million metric tons at state warehouses as well as declared by the government official earlier this month. The level of wheat stocks in state warehouses amounted to 16.47 million metric tons as of January 1, the lowest since 2017. However, Goyal announced that for the present period, India will maintain its export restrictions on wheat, rice and sugar. He said, “We will work to safeguard the interests of consumers and farmers.” India, which is also the second-largest rice producer in the world, banned exports of non-basmati white rice abroad last year. Thus, New Delhi has also stopped mills from exporting sugar in 2013. Goyal also told that his government has no immediate plans to allow duty-free imports of corn – also known as maize in India – rejecting the requirement of the poultry industry.

BBC 0522 31 Dec 2023
6195Khz 0500 31 DEC 2023 - BBC (UNITED KINGDOM) in ENGLISH from SANTA MARIA DI GALERIA. SINPO = 45223. English, ID@0459z pips and Newsroom preview. @0501z World News anchored by David Harper. Ukraine is again under attack by Russian drones, after two days of major aerial assaults by both sides. There are reports of explosions in Kyiv and Kharkiv, where the mayor said residential buildings were on fire. Moscow has been retaliating against Ukrainian strikes on the Russian border city of Belgorod on Saturday, which killed at least 20 people. That came after Russia carried out strikes across Ukraine on Friday. UN peacekeepers are finishing their withdrawal from Mali on Sunday, after a long-running mission lasting a decade. Minusma (the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission) began in 2013 after an armed rebellion, but has been asked to leave by the country's ruling military government. The UN mission's head said it did a lot but fell below expectations. With some 310 peacekeepers killed, Minusma was the UN's second deadliest mission worldwide, after Lebanon. An American destroyer shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Yemen as it responded to a call for help from a container ship that was hit separately. The US destroyers Gravely and Laboon responded to a request for assistance from the Maersk Hangzhou, a Singapore-flagged, Denmark-owned and operated container ship that reported being struck by a missile while transiting the Red Sea. New Argentinian President Javier Milei notified BRICS leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China that he was withdrawing the country’s bid to join the bloc, despite its planned entry on 1 January. North Korea will no longer seek reconciliation and reunification with South Korea, Kim Jong Un has declared, as his nation vowed to put three new military spy satellites into orbit in 2024. Kim said inter-Korean relations had become “a relationship between two hostile countries and two belligerents at war,” the state-run news agency KCNA reported. South Korea is set to implement a minimum 15 percent corporate tax scheme for multinational firms next year, in line with a global deal to reduce tax competition between countries and prevent large multilateral businesses from dodging taxes, according to Seoul's finance ministry Sunday. Mexico's government has restarted repatriation flights of Venezuelans, it said on Saturday, two days after officials agreed to work more closely with their U.S. counterparts to tackle record migration at their shared border. Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Mexico to hold high-level talks on migration and other issues. Russia accused Ukraine of conducting a "terrorist attack" on civilians in Belgorod during an emergency meeting on Saturday of the U.N. Security Council requested by Moscow. Russia said Ukraine attacked the city of Belgorod with missiles and rockets, killing at least 21 people and wounding dozens more, including 17 children, according to local authorities. @0507z "The Newsroom" begins.
