introducing kensington
Tumblr media
Kensington Grace Hughes was born July 3, 2005, making her the baby of her family.
From a very young age is was clear she had a natural ability in Hockey, She skated with an incredible speed and elegance that not many players had, Kensington has always seemed to have an ability to always be able get the puck into the net, from any angle, any distance, she could get the puck in just as easy from behind the net.
It was no surpise when she was one of the first picks of the 2023 NHL Draft, going second to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Kensington was accepted into Boston College, University of Michigan, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Princeton University, Harvard University, University of Wisconsin. Kensington didn’t want to go somewhere because her brothers went there she wanted to pick the school she wanted to play at, and it happened to be Boston College, she fell in love with the collage when she went there for the first time.
Kensington played two seasons with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, breaking Jack’s record of all time points.
Kensington has always had a passion for music, loving anything to do with music and extremely enjoying how to learn new instruments. She’s a very great singer and if Hockey wasn’t her main passion she would’ve choose to have a career in music.
Kensington has always been a very sweet person, very caring and kindhearted, gaining the nickname Sunshine from her brothers when she was young and something that’s always stuck.
Kensington was known for being incredibly sweet but that doesn’t mean she always sweet like when she is on the ice. With three brothers of course they made sure she could fight, which is something she doesn’t usually do as she faster than most players in the ice and has no need to get into a fight.
Kensington has enjoyed fashion from a young age, something she shared with her mother Ellen, and then her brother Jack. At first Jack didn’t really care for shopping or anything fashion but he loves spending time with his little sister and mother so he grew to something he loved as well.
Kensington and Luke have a pretty close relationship having spent the most time together, especially with Jack and Quinn leaving home and Kensington and Luke still both being at home.
When Luke went to Michigan he was only a few minute drive from home and saw Kensington a lot especially because the USNTDP is based in Michigan as well, they could go to each other’s games pretty often. Luke ends knowing a lot more things going on in Kensington’s life then their other two brothers by having seeing her more often, Like Luke knows Kensington has feelings for Will Smith before she even realizes then herself.
Quinn and Kensington are very close and Quinn is definitely the one Kensington always goes to for advice most of them or just needing to be calmed down. Quinn tries to watch as much of her games as he can and if he is ever near by he tries to go see her play. Kensington always looked up the most to her oldest brother Quinn.
Jack has adored his sister from the moment he held her, his little best friend and his all time favorite person in the whole world, he’s very soft and sweet with his sister. His little sunshine has always been wrapped right around his fingers and everyone who knew Jack automatically knew who Kensington was as Jack is always bragging about his baby sister.
The three boys all absolutely adore their little sister, Quinn and Luke wanted a little brother but Jack hoped for a little sister and he was definitely the most excited for a sister, he even picked out her middle name Grace.
The three are all very protective of their little sister but also know to let her fight her own battles sometimes, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t do anything for her.
It was the USNTDP where she met the rest of her best friends Ryan Leonard and Will Smith. Kensington had joined the team with her best friend Gabe Perreault, the two met Ryan and Will and the four quickly all became best friends.
When Kensington was drafted to the Penguins within 24-hours she got a text or call from every player on the team, who all were very accepting of having a girl join their team soon.
The Penguins team all quickly grew to adore Kensington and by her first season playing they were very protective of their baby penguin, and other teams quickly learned not to touch her.
Sideny Crosby who is always keeping eye on kids in hockey leagues, had kept an eye on Kensington Hughes for awhile and was very hopeful she would get into the NHL, he was the first one to call her to congratulate her from the team. He took her under his wing and offered for her to stay with him and his girlfriend Kathy, during training camp.
Once Kensington moved to Pittsburgh for her first season, she got an apartment near Sidney and Kathy, the two always inviting her over for dinner and keeping an eye on her.
Evgeni Malkin and his wife Anna love Kensington, if she isn’t at Sidney house she usually at theirs. Their son Nikita adores Kensington and is always extremely excited to see her. The family started teaching her Russian.

Hey, dude!
I can’t believe that I’m making this and that we are reliving 1989 based on what happened in 2019 but you know what. 1989 has been the most important piece of work that came into my life of yours. I will never forget as my body was tarnishing from my Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis in Aug of 2014 when you were on top of the ESB in NYC in that beautiful white dress announcing the record, to me 2 weeks later starting high school which as you know was such a difficult time in my life. Out Of The Woods was what unambiguously got me through 2014-2015. The tour for this record meant everything to me as it was the first time I finally got to see you in person since being a fan since 2006. Screaming “She Drives Me Crazy” before the lights went down and the iconic taxi beeping intro began forever remains the most iconic thing of you to do ever. When I think of listening to Clean (Taylor’s Version), I think of my 14 year old self and how much that song has been a pinnacle part of my belonging since it’s initial release. This song has been my favorite of yours for 9 years now. I’m so excited as I’m now 23 to take it all in again, jump to HYGTG and IKP, and belt out WTNY in this new collective manner. An incredible amount has gone on since we’ve last spoke or chatted on here, but your words that you shared with me follow with me each day that I go and create change in the world. My mom talks about you all the time and 5 years later has not moved on regarding your genuine kindness and appreciation that you showed to her at rep Pittsburgh. Here’s to being a college grad (can you believe that we graduated 2 days apart last year), and beginning my 1989 era, pt. 2. I thank you for changing my life with 1989. October 27 is really just a special day, am I right! Love and miss you, dude :) - David @taylorswift

Loving your Daisy Jones fics! I was wondering if you could do something about the band helping reader with their addiction or something along those lines? :)
Dissected Blush
pairings: daisy jones & the six x reader (platonic!) + reader x fem! oc (only for the end bit you can skip it if you want)
a/n: hiii sorry this took so long for me to post. I literally wrote this months ago but only got around to editing it recently. hope you enjoy and i'm backkkk. and as always requests are always open.
tw: addiction, descriptions of drug highs, mentions of smoking, drugs, swearing, overdose, near death experience
description: drugs became your best friend until it was almost too late.
Tumblr media
Y/N: If you were in a band in the 70s a lot of your life revolved around 3 things: sex, drugs and rock and roll. Ok that isn’t necessarily true for everyone but it was certainly true for me. Well mostly the drugs part. I can remember the first time I tried cocaine so vividly…
You quietly closed the back door behind you as you tiptoed over to where your bike lay. A friend from work had invited you to a party about 15 minutes away. And since you had never been to a real LA party you readily accepted.
When you arrived at the really expensive looking house, every room was in a flurry of activity. There was a certain energy in the air from all the bodies who were either high or buzzed from the various alcoholic drinks that lay scattered on every surface.
“Y/N! Over here!” You swiveled around until you spotted the familiar redhead. Natasha eagerly offered you a line of fine powder that was arranged on top of a Vogue magazine.
“What’s this?”
“Have you never seen coke before?”
“Obviously but never in person.”
“Righttt I forgot you were from Pittsburgh of all places.”
“Oh fuck off.” You quickly snorted it as you had seen done in the various movies that showed up during your insomnia filled nights.
The drug instantly hit. And all you felt was euphoria. A high like no other. Nothing compared to this. Not even that feeling of playing in front of a live audience.
You spent the rest of the night high. Taking random lines throughout the many hours of the evening. You met movie stars, directors and parades of models. Each with their own story to tell but you were in such a haze that seconds after they left the conversation it was as if they had never been there at all.
Obviously the next morning when you woke up it was as if a thousand boulders had trampled over your body the previous night. And worst of all you were laying in bed next to an unknown man, someone you vaguely remembered as being at the same level of intoxicated as you were the night before.
But above all as you hastily put on your flared jeans you realized that you were finally able to sleep.
Y/N: It started as a cure for insomnia. I didn’t really realize I was addicted to it. But I snuck out to those parties almost every night. None of the band knew but they probably realized something was up.
Karen: I think it was after Y/N started working at this boutique that there was this sudden change in her. She always came in late and during band sessions or gigs she had this energy she never had before. Not that I really complained though, she was playing incredibly well.
Warren: Y/N was always a straight-laced chic. Growing up in Hazelwood and having the parents that she has would do that to a person. When we got to LA she did a complete 180, like I remember times she would leave as I was just coming in from partying.
You quickly adjusted the red leather jacket you had borrowed from Susan, one of the regulars at the parties you went to. The air on the patio was cool against your sweat covered skin. It was a strange thing that had been happening ever since a few weeks ago but you paid it no mind.
Quickly popping an ‘upper’, you were suddenly interrupted by a loud cough. Taking a quick swig of champagne you turned around and were suddenly met with the sight of Billy Dunne standing in front of you.
You really shouldn’t have been so surprised because you had just been one of the many witnesses to Billy’s spiral since the band’s first tour had started.
“Billy.”
“Y/N.”
“You need something?”
“Can I have one of those?”
“One of what?” You asked as you quickly put your little pill box (it was really a hollowed out blush container) back into your coat pocket, pulling out a packet of cigarettes. “I thought the great Billy Dunne always had a packet of cigs on him.”
“You know what I’m talking about Y/N.” He said as he walked up next to you to the cool, metal railing.
“Hmmm really? Cause I really have no idea what you’re talking about.” You gave him a smug little smile as you leaned your head on his denim shirt. You and Billy had never been close but then again drugs always did bond people together.
“Stop trying to be coy.”
“Very well Mr. Bossman. But don’t go around telling people that I’m enabling your bad habits.”
“If you have that special little case then I’m assuming that they’re your bad habits as well.”
“Shhh it’s a secret.” You pressed your finger to your lips as you let out a short giggle before grabbing the blush case and opening it up to showcase the round white little tablets.
“Now that looks like a mighty bad habit.” Billy looked at you with a smirk as you pressed two of the pills in his palm before snapping the case shut and flicking open your lighter.
“See ya Billy.” You gave him a wink before disappearing through the back gate towards the direction of the motel you knew you were staying at.
Billy: Y/N and I enabled each other. We shared a stupid little secret that was slowly eating away at our health and livelihood. I know for a fact that the rest of the band knew I was in a downward spiral but because of that they never realized Y/N was… until it was almost too late.
Y/N: They became essential for me to function. I fucking loved how I felt with all those chemicals in my system as well. I was a more confident, stubborn and cooler version of myself. All those years in Hazelwood created this little saint of a girl who loved to play the bass but in LA I was able to throw away the parts of myself that my parents loved but I hated. So the night that they called before a show, fuck. *you run a hand through your hair and take a quick sip of sparkling water*
You hung up the room’s black telephone angrily. Why did they still have this stupid hold over you? You thumped down on the bed only to find that your back was unable to relax due to a circular object digging into the middle vertebrae. Digging a hand under your silk covered torso you pull out a blush case.
The same dissected blush case that held your stash of pills you had gotten from Mark. Taking your index finger and thumb you pick up one of the cylindrical tablets. The black nail polish that coats your nails contrasts frightfully against the stark white of the pill. Rolling it between your two fingers you carefully hold it up to the light.
“You know what… fuck it.” Your lilting voice echoed through the empty room as you set down the pill onto the glazed wood that your bedside table was made up of. Taking up the glass that still contained a slight layer of whisky on the bottom of it you quickly smash it violently down against the tablet. When you finish making the pill into a fine powder you suddenly realize how little of it there really was.
You could swear that one of these made you feel like you were on the fucking moon. Shrugging you took a couple more out of the case and restarted your process of smashing the white pills into powder.
After a couple more additions it finally seemed like there was finally enough to get you high. Well… higher than you already were before your parent’s phone call.
Sniffing up as much of the powder as you could, you finally felt that familiar bliss. This bliss was getting so, so close to how you felt the first time you tried coke that you went for another hit.
And that hit was otherworldly. You felt like you were experiencing everything all at once and it was just on another level. You fell down against the bed as the world spinned around you. Then a comfortable feeling spreads over your muscles. Untensing every bone and sinew. Darkness started to flood the corners of your eyes.
Ah finally… rest.
Eddie: Y/N and I were pretty close. My parents were best friends with hers so we were kind of pushed together to be best friends as well. So I was the first one to get worried when she didn’t show up for soundcheck. One of the things that she had never missed. Rain, shine or heavy snow, you could always depend on her being there.
Karen: Eddie kind of asked if I knew where Y/N was and I obviously had no idea. So we both decided to just go down to check on her.
Eddie: You know how some of those motels that have a window that faced the railing, well Y/N’s was open. And that is how we found her. She was just lying there, like she was asleep. But she obviously wasn’t.
Karen: Y/N had a bunch of powder covering her face and there was an obviously heavy film of it on the bedside table.
Eddie: I fucking kicked down that door when I realized what was going on. Karen went to run the shower and I started slapping her the hardest I could. Karen started trying to perform CPR.
You suddenly jolted back into your body. Hard. There was liquid running all over your face and everything felt so. fucking. heavy. You cracked open one of your eyelids and were met with blinding light.
“God?”
“No, sweetheart. You just got us.”
Y/N: After I woke up on that bathroom floor with two of my best friends standing over me looking like they had been scared half to death, I knew I needed a change. Teddy got me into this rehab center and I got into therapy. Cut off my parents, got a prescription for anxiety medication and finally fell back in love with music. Obviously not everything was great right away, it was a fucking journey.
It had only been a few days since you had been back from rehab and you were currently curled up next to Karen in her room. You had just gotten off a phone call with one of your old friends from the boutique and she had invited you over to another one of the customary get togethers, which you had to decline for obvious reasons.
“I hate this.”
“What do you mean?”
“Do you think I fucked up my twenties by overdosing and all that shit?”
“Y/N…”
“No, I swear I’m being serious. I wish I was more like you guys. I mean Warren can do drugs daily and he’s still completely fine. Why did I have to go and mess it all up?”
“You know none of that is your fault right? Yeah you might have started because it was fun but it got bad because of factors out of your control. So stop beating yourself up about it.”
“When did you get so smart?” You heard Karen dramatically gasp as she pulled her hand away from where she was running it through your hair.
“I am offended you didn’t think I was smart before.”
“Hey! You know that is not what I meant at all.”
“Yeah sure.”
Y/N: Things got better. Billy got better as well. I got to meet Daisy who has become a lifetime friend but she was also what you could describe as temptation personified. Daisy was everything I wanted to be. I was that girl before I gave up drugs. So yeah I slipped a few times… maybe more than a few.
You took a sip of whisky as you watched Daisy glide around the room as if she were walking on air. And then… a Vogue magazine was thrust in your face. A redhead was holding it towards you with a dreamy smile on her face.
“Want some?” You recalled that night from a few years ago, that night when you experienced your first high.
“Of course.”
Y/N: I didn’t get fully clean until the band broke up. Now I’ve got my 18 year sobriety chip and I own a music store in downtown LA where we also sell clothes. Which I guess are vintage now. *You let out a laugh.* So yeah no more redheads with Vogue magazines for me.
Isabelle: Yeah she just exchanged that for brunettes who are on Vogue covers.
Y/N: Oh shut it darling. *You give Isabelle a quick kiss before turning back to the camera.* So yeah I own a music/clothes store and a beautiful little hou-
Isabelle: Yeah sure let’s call it ‘little’.
Y/N: Oh Isa. *You lean your head on her shoulder.* Ok I co-own a house by the beach with my wonderful and astronomically beautiful girlfriend and 3 dogs. A husky named Hades, a golden retriever named Artemis, although we call her Artie and a mixed border collie named Hestia.
Isabelle: We both have an affinity for Greek mythology as you can see.
Y/N: Yes well we are both gay.
The camera fades out as you both let out laughs with the sunset painting an array of colors in the living room where the documentary is being taped.

I WANNA HEAR FROM THIS DUDE. Give him an entire hour of anonymity, let's hear it all
⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️
TW: skate blade injury, medical, emergency, blood, bruise
Ok this is an EXCELLENT article about neck guards and cut-resistant turtleneck undershirts.
please read to the end. Dr Hayley Wickenheiser provides incredible insight about freak accidents and the medical emergency process that shifts the article a couple of times.
$wall: After Adam Johnson's death, will 'stubborn' NHL players embrace neck-protective gear?
A little more than a year ago, T.J. Oshie read a story about a young boy who was cut in the neck by a skate blade during a youth hockey game. Almost instinctively, Oshie reached for his phone and contacted his partners at Warroad, the hockey apparel company he helped found six years ago. What started as a way to create undershirts that weren’t itchy and irritating had developed into a safety-conscious business that helped develop new, cut-resistant fabrics to protect players’ wrists and Achilles tendons.
Now, Oshie wanted turtlenecks to protect the most dangerously exposed part of a hockey player’s body — their neck, and the carotid artery within. Sure enough, Warroad came up with a sleek turtleneck with its “tilo” design, which includes cut-resistant panels built into the fabric.
It worked.
And Oshie still didn’t wear them.
In fact, he doesn’t believe a single player in the NHL wears anything of the sort. None of the bulky neck guards that are mandatory in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League (but not the Western Hockey League). None of the Kevlar-style fabric turtlenecks that are becoming more readily available all the time, from companies such as Warroad, AYCANE, and Cut-Tex Pro.
Players have their reasons. Oshie said NHL rinks are “hotter” than ever, with guys sweating through several undershirts a game, and the thought of wearing a turtleneck in such a warm environment is unappealing. Players are superstitious, wearing the same shoulder pads they used in juniors, using the same brand of skate they’ve worn since they were kids, using the same tape job and knob style they’ve used forever. And, well, turtlenecks and neck guards don’t look cool. Heck, only Wayne Gretzky and Tomas Plekanec ever really pulled off the look.
“It’s not a cool look having neck guards on,” Oshie said. “For whatever reason, it’s just not something that’s sleek and looks great.”
But then Oshie learned about Adam Johnson’s death on Saturday night. Johnson, a former player for the Pittsburgh Penguins, was cut in the neck by a skate blade during a game in England and died, shaking the hockey community to its core. Players and coaches from around the league expressed their heartbreak over the tragedy. But Oshie did more than that.
He ordered five Tilo turtlenecks from his company. One for him and four for some of his teammates to try. They’ll arrive on Monday. And he’s going to try playing in them. Because Johnson’s death did more than devastate the hockey world. It opened the hockey world’s eyes to an inherent — and possibly preventable — life-threatening risk that comes with playing the game.
At any level.
“I just wish these things never had to be made, and injuries like this would never happen, because it’s so sad,” Oshie said on his way to the Capitals’ game against the Sharks on Sunday evening. “It hits me pretty hard, just thinking about my kids. I could take one to the neck tonight. And for them to not have a father — it’s just so sad and it makes me think twice about protecting myself and my neck out there. Whether it looks cool or not.”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Jason Dickinson didn’t know what had happened to Boston’s Jakub Lauko last Tuesday at the United Center, he only knew that it looked gruesome. One of Dickinson’s Chicago teammates asked him what had happened and Dickinson speculated that Lauko had hit his head on the boards and “split open.”
After the game, Lauko’s bloodied face was still a topic of conversation in the Blackhawks dressing room. Dickinson heard someone say that it was a skate blade that caught Lauko in the area of his left eye.
“A skate?” Dickinson said. “How did that happen?”
“It was your skate!” a teammate told him.
“Are you kidding me?” Dickinson responded. “When?”
It had happened when Dickinson was falling into the boards after a push from Boston’s John Beecher. Lauko was already down on all fours, and Dickinson’s skate caught him in the face. As mangled as his face was in the aftermath, Lauko was extraordinarily lucky the skate missed his eye. Dickinson never even felt the contact.
Tumblr media
Dickinson, after learning it was his skate, immediately checked in with the team’s medical staff to find out if Lauko was OK, and was indescribably relieved to find out he was. Dickinson’s heart went out to Johnson’s family on Sunday, but he also spared a thought for the player whose skate caught Johnson in the neck.
“I feel for (him) as well,” Dickinson said. “He’s on the other end of that and he’s going to have some stuff to work through, because that’s heavy stuff. I guarantee he feels guilty right now, even though it’s a freak accident.”
That’s a word you hear a lot when it comes to skate-cut injuries, whether it’s Pat Maroon’s skate slicing through Evander Kane’s wrist last season or Matt Cooke’s skate tearing Erik Karlsson’s Achilles tendon 10 years ago. A “freak” accident. A “freak” play.
But is it? After all, this is a game played by people moving at exceptional speeds with exceptional force wearing exceptionally dangerous weapons on their feet. If anything, it’s shocking that skate cuts don’t happen more often.
Hayley Wickenheiser, a Team Canada legend, assistant general manager for the Toronto Maple Leafs and emergency physician, bristled at the depiction of such incidents as “freak” occurrences.
“I don’t think this is a freak thing, I think it happens quite a lot,” she said. “It’s just the injuries are superficial, or the players are lucky. This isn’t something that doesn’t happen; it happens a lot in hockey. Sticks come up, skates come up, and the neck is very susceptible. So whatever we can do to make (neck protection) more mainstream and just part of the equipment, the better for the future of the game. It just makes sense to me.”
Indeed, while terrifying incidents like the cuts suffered by Johnson and former Sabres goaltender Clint Malarchuk are thankfully very rare, it seems like every player has a story to tell of a close call, a near miss, a Lauko-style bit of “luck.” Dickinson took a skate on the collarbone during a game against Vegas last season and “immediately panicked,” wondering if a major artery was nicked.
“I remember the ref looked at me right away and said, ‘That was real close, Dickie,’” Dickinson said. “I’m like,’ Yeah, you’re telling me. I can f—ing feel it.”
Oshie was volunteering at a camp at his alma mater, North Dakota, some years ago, when he was rough-housing with the kids. They were dog-piling him on the ice, falling all over each other, laughing hysterically.
“Then one kid came in full speed and slid into the pile feet-first, and he actually hit me square in the face with his skate blade,” Oshie said. “So I had to get stitches above and below my eye. I still have a scar in my eyebrow that goes into my forehead. Luckily, it was flush with my face so it didn’t cut my eye.”
They can’t all be “freak” incidents, right?
“It’s unfortunate,” Blackhawks coach and 21-year NHL veteran Luke Richardson said. “It’s one of the fastest games on Earth, with razor blades on the bottom of your feet. It’s very scary and things happen quick. … I don’t know if there’s any way to guarantee that there’s going to be protection. Even if you do wear something. You can’t be in a tin can top to bottom out there for protection. It’s the risk that the pro players take.”
Richardson cited Oshie’s company as a valuable resource for players, and suggested that with time, neck protection will become normalized in the NHL. When he entered the league in 1987, there were still players playing without helmets. It took years after that for visors to become the norm to protect players’ eyes. Richardson hoped that with neck protection becoming more and more common — and mandatory — in lower leagues, it’s only a matter of time before it “graduates up” to the NHL.
Arizona center Nick Bjugstad, who played with Johnson in Pittsburgh and called him “just a kind human,” said he couldn’t bring himself to watch the video, so he doesn’t know exactly how the cut happened. But he thinks the answer is pretty obvious.
“There are times that your feet go out from under you and you don’t have control,” Bjugstad said. “As far as the precaution going forward, I’m sure it’ll be discussed in the league. It’s even more important on the youth side of things, with the lack of athletic trainers and whatnot. I hope we can figure something out as a hockey community that protects us from something so tragic happening.”
Scott Sandelin, who coached Johnson at Minnesota-Duluth, said making neck protection and Kevlar-style undergear mandatory has come up in conversations around the NCAA championship committee, with longtime Mercyhurst coach Rick Gotkin leading the charge.
“He was like, ‘Why do we wait?’” Sandelin recalled. “Why do we wait for something like this to happen before you mandate something?”
Dickinson said the NHL provided a video at the beginning of the season highlighting the benefits of cut-resistant sleeves to protect the wrists and Achilles tendons, and those have become quite popular around the league. But neck protection remains ignored by everyone other than goaltenders.
Johnson’s death surely opened some eyes around the hockey world to the risk of skate cuts to the neck, and it appeared that several Providence Bruins, in the AHL, wore neck guards on Sunday. That’s a start.
But why does it have to be a years-long process? Why can’t it happen sooner? Why do players have to be grandfathered in to avoid any mandates whenever a new equipment mandate is instituted?
“Because they’re stubborn,” said one NHL equipment manager, who was granted anonymity so he could speak freely. “It’s a monkey-see, monkey-do league. All it would take is one guy to wear it. Then two days to get used to it.”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Wickenheiser has a similarly simple solution to getting players past all their superstitions and habits, to get them to embrace what seems like such an obvious solution to a terrifying problem.
“You just put one on,” she said. “I wore one for 20 years with the national team, it didn’t interfere with anything I did. … It’s just like anything else, when one player does it, everyone sees it and it becomes normal. I can’t even remember hockey without visors now, and I grew up watching the world of hockey without visors. I can’t even imagine not playing with a visor with how fast the game is.”
As an emergency physician and all-time hockey great, Wickenheiser is perhaps uniquely qualified to weigh in on the subject. She knows how well-stocked NHL arenas are in terms of medical care. She also knows it’s not nearly enough if, God forbid, a situation similar to what happened to Johnson happens in an NHL game. The thought has frequently crossed her mind that if there were an incident at a practice, she might be the most qualified person in the rink that day. She runs the scenarios in her mind constantly, and “it truly horrifies me.”
“You know how little time and resources you have to save a life in that moment,” she said. “The deck is entirely stacked against you as a physician. In the NHL buildings, there would be qualified physicians, there’s (emergency medical services) in the building. You have every resource at your fingertips. But what you don’t have is time. You need a surgeon and you need blood and you need time, and there’s none of those things in that moment. It’s just such a devastating injury. It freaks me out, for sure.”
It’s something players rarely think about. Can’t think about, really. Richardson said it was similar to a football player coming back from a knee injury — if you’re constantly wondering if the surgically repaired knee will hold up, you’ll never be playing at full strength and full speed. Hockey players have to feel invincible out there in order to take the risks they take on seemingly every shift.
But Oshie said there’s an instinctive, almost unthinking awareness of what your skates are doing at all times. Because the danger is always in the back of your mind, if not the front.
“I think you’re always very conscious of where your skates are when you’re playing,” he said. “I know I am. If someone’s on the ground in front of you, even if you get pushed from behind, you always get your feet out of the way, if that makes sense. It might look terrible if someone is about to fall on someone and goes knees-first, but that’s what you do instead of trying to land on your feet. I just assume that everyone else has that same mentality. But those very freak things happen. You get pushed from behind and you stay on one foot and the other foot comes up. I took a skate blade to my visor in our last preseason game, just this year. So I was a couple inches away from being cut somewhere.”
The game only gets more dangerous with each passing year. Players get bigger, stronger, faster. Skate blades are removable now, and they stay razor-sharp throughout the game, rather than dulling with each shift. Ignoring the risks won’t make them go away.
The introduction of the slap shot led to the goalie mask. Whippier sticks and more dangerous shooters made visors inevitable. Ten or 20 years from now, it’s easy to envision players regularly wearing full face shields. The Karlsson and Kane incidents, among others, helped spur the creation and popularization of wrist and ankle sleeves.
Neck protection will undoubtedly follow. It’s just a matter of when.
And if Johnson’s tragic and shocking death doesn’t prove to be enough to open eyes and open minds, then what will?
“There are options out there, and it’s not a bad idea at all,” Dickinson said. “It’s about awareness. And events like (Saturday) night, events like Kane’s, like Karlsson’s — those really make guys think and get them worried. It’s definitely something I’d consider now. I mean, who cares what it looks like? Looking lame and living is a lot better than the opposite.”

I went to my first pens game in March (Vs the Hurricanes). I don't really like hockey and don't understand it. Why does the ref just randomly blow the whistle and they all have to stop??? I didn't understand
first of all. that is the FUNNIEST game to have gone to. as a leafs fan who complains about missing michael bunting to anyone who will listen going to see his two next teams play each other is an incredible coincidence. ok nerding over
the refs will blow the whistle in three circumstances: a goal, a penalty, or a rule violation. "they all stop" is probably an indication that it was a penalty (theyre more likely to idle), as when it's a rule violation they usually just skate over to where the faceoff is gonna be but ill explain both anyway.
penalty: there are a couple different types of penalties, but the most common is a minor penalty. a few of these are tripping, elbowing, hooking, and holding. they're usually pretty self-explanatory, and when they happen the whistle gets blown and the guy who does it has to go into the penalty box for two minutes. usually guys will also skate to the ref to complain about the penalty. very funny.
honestly penalties are sort of hard to spot, especially if its your first game. i still have trouble if im not focusing fully on the game and i LOVE being insane about spotting little things. they also dont provide like. programs or shit at hockey games. like, why is there no beginners guide? smh. but yeah. penalties are Putting That Grown Man in timeout, and an absolute Delight.
since there's a guy in the box, the team has to play one player down, and the other team gets to keep all of their players (a 5v4). this is good for most teams but ESPECIALLY not the pittsburgh penguins, who are very bad at it. rip to u....
rule violations: to my knowledge there are two of these: offside and icing. theyre a bit more difficult so im gonna put diagrams, and also explanations.
there are three zones in the hockey rink: the offensive zone (where the opposing team's goalie is), the neutral zone (in between the blue lines), and the defensive zone (where your team's goalie is).
Tumblr media
offside: when a player crosses the blue line from the neutral zone into the offensive zone before the puck does. cant do that!!
icing: a player shooting the puck the length of the ice, crossing the centre line and the opponents goal line. theres a BUNCH of complications to it, but that's it at its most simplest form. this rule was made bcs players used to just camp their own net and shoot the puck down the ice to prevent the other team from scoring, which is unfair and unfun to watch.
anyway hope that helped!!!!! hope it was also. comprehensible. thanks for helping me procrastinate my final!!!! hope you get to go to another game next season (or ?? i guess the pens have 3 games left so) and have fun and maybe understand a little bit!!!!

I had such an incredible time at Back to the Future: The Musical this past Saturday! I decided a couple of weeks ago on a much-needed solo adventure when I was able to score tickets in the eighth row for a good price!
Coming from the Pittsburgh area, it’s about 6 hours’ drive to the Big Apple. I left at 4 AM and followed the sun across Pennsylvania, sneaking a snapshot when the fog broke long enough (it was so foggy!).
Tumblr media
There was also some lovely flora and fauna amidst the fog at the rest stops, particularly at the PA-NJ border.
Tumblr media
Now, I have been to NYC three times before this in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Coming back felt like the most special and most normal thing at the same time. I missed it! While I could never live in a city, I enjoyed taking in the awe of the big buildings and novelties Times Square had to offer a couple of hours before my show (I should have went back for that Reese’s candle, but I def had NY Cheesecake for dinner).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now the show? Amazing. Spoilers below the cut.
First off, let me assure you that whatever seat you have, you will hear the show. I’m pretty sure my hearing was a tad damaged from the sonic booms and big chorus numbers, and I had a decent headache from it, so just be warned that it was a bit louder than anticipated. If you’re in the last row of the mezzanine, you’ll hear it all, I promise!
Some of my favorite things about the performance:
Hugh Coles makes it look like they plucked George McFly straight out of the film. He was incredible and by far the perfect embodiment of his character. So if you’re a big George fan, this is your show! If you’re not, he will make you fall in love with him! Incredible!
Roger Bart makes a joke about going to 2020 and there is no disease and a few people really cackled at that, and he broke character to look at someone and say thank you. Then, for probably 45 seconds, he broke character laughing with us over it, and Casey (Marty) is just standing there looking perfectly confused without cracking. It was a delightful way to start the second half!
Super enjoyed that when Marty meets Doc and is first trying to convince him to come see the DeLorean, Doc sees him go right for the flashlights in a drawer he couldn’t possibly know they were in, making him realize this kid might be who he says he is. I don’t know why that little detail stuck out to me as so significant, but it did. It was so satisfying from a storytelling perspective.
I loved George and Marty’s number in the backyard. We don’t get to see a lot of Marty really positively connecting with his dad in the movie unless it’s serving the “saving himself from non-existence” plot. I loved the genuine father-son feel of Marty dancing and George trying to copy him and Marty celebrating him for it. That felt good. One of those things theater is really good at capturing!
They filled the auditorium with bubbles during the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance and OH, talk about immersive atmosphere. Loved seeing everyone reach up to pop at least one bubble, like we were accepting some kind of offering. So fun!
Jennifer’s UNCLE HUEY. NICE.
The stage changes to the story were acceptable and believable. I almost didn’t realize the whole skateboard chase didn’t happen til the scene before the dance in the diner. Good job of keeping things succinct by combining various scenes and keeping the pace smooth!
This is nothing, but I saw a fake flower go flying off a bouquet and almost immediately one of the Texaco guys just tucked it in his rag when his staging brought him close enough during the number and kept going. I love seeing how discreetly the “oops” gets fixed on-stage.
After the show, I was out back to have my playbill signed by the cast when BOB GALE walked within a foot of me. I froze. I wasn’t sure. It has been my goal to ask this man the month and day of Doc Brown’s birthday for years and I BLEW IT. But he was quietly trying to get out of there I think. Someone got a quick photo with him before he disappeared in Times Square and UGHHH I can’t believe he was RIGHT THERE. (My friend who went to the 8 PM show said Alan Silvestri was there! How cool is this??)
My playbill was signed by all of the cast minus Roger Bart. He did not leave the theater that any of us saw. I did get to catch a photo with Mayor Goldie Wilson on his way back in, though!
Tumblr media
I also got to meet up briefly with @bri-to-the-future and give her a 60s Doc I crocheted for her! How fortuitous that we got to see the show on the same day and meet face-to-face!
Tumblr media
And then it started raining, my hotel didn’t get my reservation, and I was so mad that I just drove the six hours home (do not recommend). 🙃
It was certainly an adventure! I’m so glad I finally got to see it in-person, and I definitely recommend it! Now I can officially talk musical! 🎵 🎶

Hi! Thank you for your blog. I often hear from autistic people themselves that they have an excellent memory and they remember a lot of things without problems. And I feel incredibly superfluous because I am an autistic with… a very bad memory. I hardly remember what people say. My special interests are more than a decade old, but my brain simply loses important aspects of information. When I share something with people, I always look at the notes to make sure I haven't forgotten anything. I'm very slow and focused, but my brain gets rid of the information anyway. I was diagnosed a year ago and studied autism and other diagnoses for a year. It was difficult for me to study the topic, because my brain likes to grab details and it's difficult for me to immediately see the whole picture, so it took me so much time to understand everything, but… at one point my brain said "enough!". And I realized that I don't remember almost anything that I learned in a year. Although I could have told a lot just a month ago. Unfortunately, I have not found good information about poor memory in autistic people, as everyone says the opposite. I can only say that I often lose my memory after stressful things, but under "stress" my brain considers any situation where there are too many emotions - good or bad.
Hi there,
Unfortunately my memory isn’t that good either due to my epilepsy. I did find one article discussing some research on autism and memory. Here’s are some excerpts:
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System have found that children with autism differ from other children in two specific memory capabilities. The research is in January's Neuropsychology, which is published by the American Psychological Association (APA).
Researchers including neurologist Nancy Minshew, MD, studied 76 children from ages 8 to 16. Half were verbal individuals with autism, half were normal controls matched for age, IQ and gender. The diagnosis of autism reflected social and communication impairments of the autistic type along with restricted interests and patterns of behavior.
First, the children with autism, compared to the matched controls, had poorer memory for complex information (many individual elements or one complicated element) in both word and picture form. In essence, the children with autism found it hard to remember information if they needed a cognitive organizing strategy to aid recall or if they had to detect such an organizing element in the information itself.
The authors speculate that, "People with autism don't have the automatic cross talk between brain systems -- the reasoning and the memory systems -- that tells their brain what is most important to notice or how to organize it thematically."
Second, children with autism also had poor working memory for spatial information, or remembering over time where something was located once it was out of sight. Although working memory for verbal information was fine, a "Finger Windows" subtest of recall of a spatial sequence easily distinguished between children with and without autism. Spatial working memory depends on a specific region of the frontal cortex that is known to be dysfunctional in autism.
Despite these two impairments, the children with autism did not have global memory problems. They showed good associative learning ability, verbal working memory and recognition memory. Because their memories differed in only two specific ways, memory in autism appears to be organized differently than in normal individuals -- reflecting differences in the development of brain connections with the frontal cortex.
The article will be below in case you’d like to read more. I hope this helps answer your question. Thank you for the inbox. I happen you have a wonderful day/night. ❤️

hello hi im late but. ❤️💔🔺👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 for maura pls :>
❤️ RED HEART — what are three of your oc's positive traits?
OPSTIMISTIC — Maura’s the perpetual optimist. She always has been. Even in the midst of a global, apocalyptic outbreak event, she still manages to see the glass half full. It’s probably annoying to some of the people around her, but it’s the reason she survives. It’s the reason she survives the outbreak, survives the Quarantine Zone, survives captivity, and survives running for her life; the light at the end of the tunnel kept her waking up every single morning to face another day.
COMPASSIONATE — There’s good in everyone, Maura thinks — even the people that held her captive and tried to break her spirit. Working as a paramedic (and later as de facto doctor in Jackson) has opened her already giant heart to just about everything. She’s a natural caregiver, even to her own detriment, and all she wants to do is ease suffering. It’s all she’s ever wanted.
SOCIABLE — She just loves people. Like, so much. Maura’s a talker, a conversationalist, a warm presence in a not so warm world. She loves her work, because it means she gets to talk to just about everyone in Jackson at one time or another, and honestly? They’re better off for it too. She makes people feel welcome and wanted, even if just because she knows how to make small talk.
💔 BROKEN HEART — what are three of your oc's negative traits?
NAÏVE — As much as her optimism and compassion serves her well, it also opens her up to danger. In all honesty, Maura is incredibly naive. She believes the best of people, even when the best doesn’t exist in them. That bit in Pittsburgh, when Joel and Ellie are flagged down by the hunter pretending to be hurt? Maura believes that. Maura trusts that. And trusting everyone is what gets her held captive by a group of hunters for a little over a decade.
COWARDLY — Maura endures things because she is afraid. Once she’s settled in Jackson, the people who found her ask her why she stayed with the hunters for so long. Why didn’t she run sooner? Why did it take ten years? Why? As embarrassed as she is to admit it, the reason is that she never had the courage to. She allowed herself to be used for so long because she was afraid of what would happen if she tried to leave. That’s not the only example of cowardice getting the better of her, but it’s certainly the biggest — and something she knows she needs to learn from.
SELFLESS — I hate to use something perceived as a “good” trait like this is a job interview, but when I say her selflessness is a negative trait, I mean selflessness in the most unhealthy way. Maura is kind to people and gives whatever she can to help them, but she doesn’t know when to stop. She’s never known when to stop. That viral quote about someone overwatering flowers because they didn’t know when to stop giving? That’s Maura. She’ll drain herself for another person if they let her.
🔺 RED TRIANGLE POINTED UP — does your oc know how to use any weapons?
God bless her, but not really. Maura is so deeply conflicted averse and for so long didn’t even have access to a weapon that her skills are severely neglected. She did learn basic firearm handling at the beginning of the outbreak when she started working for FEDRA in the QZ, but those skills are so rusty by the time she’s settled in Jackson and made a life for herself that it’s almost as if she never learned at all.
Tommy did teach her how to use a bow, and it definitely suits her more. She just prefers to never have to use it — and lucky for her, she’s never really had to.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 FAMILY WITH MOTHER, FATHER, SON AND DAUGHTER — how many people are in your oc's immediate family? how many people are in your oc's extended family? do they have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? who in their family are they closest with? are they close with their birth family, or do they have a found family?
Maura’s birth family was always really small. Her mom, Hazel, was a young, single mother, and Maura was her only child. Maura never knew her dad — not even his name — and the only other family member she knew was her grandmother, who passed away when she was a teenager. For a really long time, Maura’s family is just her and her mom. No aunts, no uncles, no cousins. Just her and her mom, and she is deeply close with her mom.
Hazel dies in the initial outbreak (at least Maura thinks she does — she never gets to find out one way or another), and it’s the family she finds that fills the void in her heart.
There’s Zach, a man she meets during her time with the hunters. He’s part of their group, but he doesn’t belong a bit, and he’s ultimately the person who encourages her to escape, even though it means leaving him behind. In a different world, she and Zach would have fallen in love, but this version of reality wasn’t as kind to them. She never sees him again and isn’t sure he’s even alive after her escape.
Tommy quickly becomes her best friend when she finds herself in Jackson, and then, after disgusting amounts of pining, her partner. She marries him five years before the game events, and he is easily the most important puzzle piece of her found family. He’s her everything — confidant, cheerleader, guiding light.
And of course, there’s @corvosattano’s Maxine, who becomes something like a sister to her, and not just because she’s her sister-in-law. Maxine is everything Maura isn’t, and it’s their differences that make them click so well. Maura admires her strength, her courage, her quiet bravery and determination. I don’t think Max would say any of those things about herself ever, but Maura sees them in her, and she loves her for them. (Sorry to wax poetic, Macy. I miss them.)
There’s plenty of other members of that found family, of course, but those three are the ones that shaped her the most. They filled an empty, aching void in her chest when she needed it most.

Sandra Oh is a LOSER and I have receipts.
Tumblr media
Sandra Oh has been nominated 13 times for an Emmy Award and she has not won 13 times. Damn, gurl. What seems to be the problem here? You mean to tell me you weren't good enough not once, not twice, not thrice, not a dozen times, but THIRTEEN times?
Sorry, baby. It's all true. How do you spell "loser?" You spell it S-A-N-D-R-A-O-H. Okay, here's the thing. I'm only a few more weeks/days/hours/minutes/seconds from pulling the plug on WeAreVillaneve across every social media platform and since the show is dead, over, and buried, how much longer am I supposed to carry on? Gurl, please!
I'm all done with this "Yes, someone else was better than Sandra Oh for the 13th time, but oh well the writing wasn't that good and Zendaya was really good in Euphoria" bullshit.
Tumblr media
Hey! Wasn't I supposed to be the star? WTF? Why are you smirking, Jodie, huh?
Sandra Oh has been nominated for an Emmy award 13 times and she has lost 13 times. Eleven times to a White woman and two times to a Black biracial woman and that is all well and good, but it is not. It really is not.
Sandra can style n' profile on the carpet and blow up social media by showing up rocking that Prince-inspired PURPLE in all her fierceness and ferocity, but when she actually steps inside, takes her seat, and sits quietly for the next three to four hours of jokes falling flat, commercial breaks, and categories she doesn't give a single shit about until they FINALLY get to Best Actress in A Drama and the actual award we tuned in to see, and once again loses because Someone Not Named Sandra Oh just oh-so happened to give a better performance than her it doesn't matter if their name is Claire Foy, Blythe Danner (x2), Katherine Heigel, Dianne Wiest, Jane Lynch, Zendaya (x2), Jodie Comer or Cherry "Who?" Jones.
Tumblr media
All that matters is their name isn't Sandra Miju Oh. So yes, I AM blaming Sandra's 13th loss upon the fact that even White Liberal AF Hollywood is STILL located in Racist AF Amerikka and the fact is Sandra Oh is still too much of a badass, too unapologetic, too 50+, and too damn It's An Honor Just To Be Asian woman, and the Emmys ain't wit' it. Don't want to piss off those conservative corporations that buy up ad space on television and own movie studios or China by giving the Korean American Canadian her long-goddamn-overdue Emmy.
She can wait, right? Asian don't raisin, amirite?
Sandra Oh stood in the middle of the street in Pittsburgh after Asians had been targeted in Atlanta and across the U.S. and said I AM PROUD TO BE ASIAN AND I BELONG HERE and the Queen said it with her whole entire chest and damn whether or not White Liberal Hollywood was on board yet or not. Sandra spoke out when it would have been easier to not speak up.
Tumblr media
Maybe that came back to bite her. Maybe it didn't. Maybe something else entirely, but I'm not going to treat Sandra being stubbed for the 13th and for all four seasons of Killing Eve as business-as-usual/somebody was better and ermigawd Zendaya is incredible!!!
Which she is. But is Zendaya and all the many other not-Sandras so much better than Sandra Oh? Sorry, but not sorry baby. Sandra Got Snubbed I give not one shit if Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, Nikki Swift, the entire Killing Eve fandom in general, or you specifically agree with me or not.
Sandra Oh is Too Proud/Too Asian for Hollywood and that is fact and that is the truth. That's the truth and this 13th loss is the proof of it. I'm right and you're wrong and that's it. NOBODY loses thirteen damn times and it's just an unhappy coincidence. Don't be stupid or play me and Sandra like we are. We know what the Emmy wants and what it does not want to do is give Sandra Oh her Emmy.
So, roll up your excuses and do it any way you wanna but at the end of the day Sandra Oh was snubbed and I give not a single shit if Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, Nikki Swift, and the entire Killing Eve fandom agree with me or not. Facts are facts, fam, and the facts are Sandra got screwed.
AGAIN.
Disagree all you want. I'm okay because reasonable people can disagree reasonably But then it's on you to show me where I'm wrong.

do you ever think about those that remain. do you ever think about how one of the best and most competitive athletes in pro sports, his best defenseman and close friend, and his other half and monster in his own know exactly what it is to win. three times actually. and do you think about the two that joined them and stayed. do you think about the seemingly fragile boy grew to play top line every night and be loved by his city. about the boy who goes forever underrated and under appreciated for the things he does. about the those five that stayed and that know. that know what it is to win. and now, must learn, again, to lose.
everyone else says they come here because pittsburgh is a winning city. that it's an honor to play with the big three, and that it becomes even more incredible to play with guentzel and rust too. but they don't know. how could they? they weren't here in those golden and black and white days. they weren't around to play with hornqvist, kessel, sheary, hagelin, cole, maatta, kunitz, daley, murray, dumolin, flower. they weren't around, really, truly, for those two cups in 2016 and 2017. they just don't know, and that's ok... but sid does. geno does. tanger, rusty, and guentz do. they remember. and that makes all this only hurt more.
it is the joy of winning that makes the losing so much more difficult. to know you have been there before, but that it may never happen again.
and do you ever think about those who never wanted to leave? that were torn away? do you think about flower, about dumolin, about all the others? do you ever long so badly for something you never experienced (what's up new pens fans <3 also older fans, im jealous of you but in a good way) that it hurts? do you have to remind yourself to just enjoy those big three and their "eldest daughters" while you can even when they lose but in reality you just don't want to because you just want to win. because it sucks losing and in some small way, you know how they feel out there on the ice each night. longing for something that might well be completely unachievable. do you think about that?

hii!
how are you?
I saw you posts about the blue jays, and as someone trying to get into baseball, can you like maybe give me a rundown of how the league works and maybe an overview of the blue jays since thats the team Im probably gonna be rooting for? I'm trying to get into it but im completely new to the sport and im honestly a little overwhelmed.
p.s I love your blog!
-🦫
hiii! i'm decent!! i hope you are too :)
omg okay, i only got into baseball a couple of seasons ago, so i don't know like every tiny detail, but here's a little overview! i'm a little honoured you asked me kjnskdjnsda
i'm assuming you know more or less how a game of baseball is played, but if not lmk!
so. mlb first.
the teams are divided between east, central, and west. within each of those there is also the american league and the national league.
AL east: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays
AL central: Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Guardians (formerly the Indians but pretty much only old people still call them that), Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins
AL west: Houston Astros, LA Angels, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers
NL east: Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals
NL central: Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals
NL west: Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, LA Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants
In the NL, pitchers used to have to bat as well as hit, whereas in the AL there was a designated hitter (DH) who was not in the field, but rather stayed on the bench until it was their turn in the lineup to bat (instead of the pitcher). This rule changed last season I believe, and pitchers are no longer required to bat in the NL, but they can still do so if they want (see Shohei Ohtani, an incredible pitcher and batter). Pretty sure that's the only major difference. The AL and NL distinction is used during the All Star Games where the best (objectively) players from across the league play a game: AL versus NL.
It used to be that teams played their division rivals more than other teams, but the MLB has a new schedule this year that is trying to make it so each team plays division rivals less and interleague teams more (e.g., instead of playing other AL east teams a million times, the Blue Jays will play more NL teams). This is to try and make things a bit more even in terms of who plays whom, and also will allow fans to hopefully see their favourite teams more regularly.
For baseball, unlike in, say hockey where there's just single games against teams at a time, MLB baseball has series, in which two teams play anywhere from 2-4 games back to back. There are winners and losers of each game, of course, but there's also the winner and loser of the series. Series that have 2 or 4 games can have a tie, though.
Like other professional sports, there is a final playoff stint for MLB. It happens in the fall. This site has a good rundown of the playoff format!
And here's a list of over 150 basbeall terms/phrases!
Onto the Blue Jays:
So, the jays are Canada's only MLB team and as a result they pretty much have an entire country backing them. They are very vocal and proud of this fact, and take pride in representing a whole country. So that's always nice!
There are some favourites on the team, especially on tumblr lol. These include:
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
1st baseman
Number 27
23 years old (24 on march 16)

2022
This year has been an absolute wild ride. I've done so many things and so many things have happened that I wanted to write up something to kind of put it all into perspective for myself mostly.
So 2022 started a panicked scramble to move across the country from Oklahoma to Pittsburgh, PA to live with my partner. This was a big step for me because I had lived in the same house my ENTIRE life! So this was the first time I was moving. It was a pain in the ass, incredibly stressful, but so worth it. I love pittsburgh and I love being here with Meg.
I got a second tattoo! An homage to Van Gogh's sunflowers. I plan on slowly working up to a full sleeve.
We visited a lot of really amazing places like Phipps, the carnegie art museum, the aviary, the frick museum, a bunch of art shows, but my favorite was seeing Hadestown in person in an absolutely astoundingly gorgeous theatre.
This year I started to dig into a lot of different kinds of art. I finished a (small) traditional painting that I still really love. I made some traditional art for Art Fight that I'm really happy with and some lovely gift art for friends. I've also dug a bit back into my own game designing and art for fun. My taste and skill for cooking has EXPLODED since I moved here and I have 4 cook books on my desk alone right now! We also have 4 plants that we take care of and I'm very happy with how they're doing. (yes cooking and plants count as art!!!)
I started reading a LOT more this year! I read... -Small Gods by Terry Pratchett -The Crossroads at Midnight by Abby Howard -The Trees by Percival Everett -Greener Pastures by Michael Wehunt -Shiver by Junji Ito God there might be more but I didn't keep a list... I'll keep a list next year
Theres SO many theatres in Pittsburgh! Meg and I saw a couple movies this year. Nope was amazing! Belle was a gorgeous anime movie. But it was Everything Everywhere All at Once that really blew us away. I don't know what I could say that would do that movie justice. I just remember walking home from the movie and getting choked up just discussing it.
Played a ton of games this year. I'm really happy about it because I played a bunch of weird and older games that really expanded how I feel about video games. Between Morrowind, Dwarf Fortress, Caves of Qud, System Shock 2, and Prey 2019 I feel like I've grow a lot in the games I consume and how I look at them.
I didn't get around to playing as many tabletop games this year as I would have liked but my game of Root TTRPG has been going strong! A year now and its so much fun each time! Plus, a weekly game of Gloomhaven has been great. Gloomhaven is a very fun time but also can be draining with how much thinking I have to do.
While moving was the biggest thing for me this year, Art was up there. I left my position working on Sun Haven in September. There were a good handful of reasons that I don't really need to get into but the main thing was I just wasn't happy. After leaving I've felt rejuvenated and excited about art. Working on a bunch of different things and excited to work on more. I have so much planned for 2023 and I can't wait to hit the ground running with projects I'm working on, starting, or planning.
In 2017 my twin sister passed away. That started a big chain reaction that, somehow, led me to here. It was a terrible thing that happened and I still feel the echoes of the pain today. But because of that I have grown into a much stronger person. When I sat in the audience of Hadestown, knowing how much my sister loved musicals, knowing how much she would have loved this one specifically, I fidgeted with my necklace. It's a small silver container of some of her ashes. I turned 30 this year. All of these things coming together, getting out of oklahoma, being in the big city, seeing hadestown, all of the tiny, daily things combined feel like I have closed a chapter in my life. 2022 wasn't an easy year, it had it's ups and downs as any year would. But it was the best year I've had in the past 5. I am so excited to see where I go from here. I don't know what 2023 will bring but I'm expecting big things for all of us.

"But Hogwarts Legacy is just a game!"
If it was just a game, it would still be incredibly offensive, but I am begging people to look at it in the context of what else is happening:
Marjorie Taylor Greene has called a Holocaust survivor a nazi, suggested that a Jewish family was partially responsible for using space lasers to start wildfires, and a compared mask and vaccine mandates to the Holocaust. She has been deemed fit for office and put on committees.
Donald Trump called Nazis good. His party supported him.
There are numerous hate crimes against Jews. The Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting. The Poway Synagogue shooting. Colleyville Synagogue. Jaime Tran just murdered two Jewish men.
A Tennessee school banned Maus, a graphic novel about the Holocaust.
A survey found that of adults in the US under 40, 11% believed Jews caused the Holocaust, 10% had never heard of the Holocaust, 10% either weren't sure the Holocaust happened or didn't believe it happened, 30% have seen Nazi symbols on social media, and 56% do not know what Auschwitz is.
And this is just in the US. Antisemitism is not a thing of the past or rare. Hogwarts Legacy is part of a bigger whole, and you can't play it and say you aren't normalizing antisemitism.

TLOU episode 2:
Spoilers below
I feel like it’s a great achievement to be able to surprise people who have known and loved this world for nearly a decade. There are so many things that I’m not expecting, so many nuances and little details that they’re adding in for characters, for infected that leave me leaning forward, waiting to see what’s around the next corner.
First of all, the opening scene in Jakarta actively freaked me out. ME, who has played this game over 50 times over the years. It brings such a level of reality to the outbreak. Like sure, you understand that that could happen, but seeing a scientist react to it, tell the soldier that there was no cure, nothing they could do, and she wanted to go home to her family was…haunting.
Also I had a hunch about the contaminated flour and I was right!!!
If this episode didn’t make you fall in love with Bella’s Ellie, idk what to tell you. She has that perfect mix of purposefully annoying kid and hilarious and funny and even a little weird. I love how she takes in the scenery, how she asks questions, how she rolls her eyes and snarks at Joel.
I loved Tess and Ellie’s little friendship, they clearly have an affinity for each other, and Anna and Bella did a great job developing that in such a short period of time.
I’m also really interested in them moving things around. The hotel moment was in Pittsburgh, not Boston, so it makes me wonder if we’ll see the hotel basement at all, or if Pittsburgh is going to be completely different from the game. (I do hope they keep the library).
Also the HIVE MIND??? HELLO?? That is SO different and unexpected and I LOVE it.
LOVED Ellie and Joel’s moment in the hallway. They are so funny and have so much chemistry. I’ll say it every single week: perfect casting.
The set pieces have been perfect so far, like I actually gasped seeing the museum, it was straight out of the game.
They did a great job showing that the clickers are not things that you can just sneak around, shiv, and be done with it. They are TERRIFYING, and terrifying in a way that’s almost heightened from the games. I feel like we all hate running into clickers, but I always hated stalkers more, and these clickers seem to be a little like that, like ANY noise can send them in your direction.
The makeup and prosthetics? I am extremely glad Craig brought over the people from Chernobyl, because that remains such a triumph in makeup design for me.
Also…that moment on the roof, the “you can’t deny that view,” I’m so glad they kept that shot for shot. It’s such a deeply integral scene in the game and I’m glad they didn’t change it at all.
Listen. I knew what was going to happen to Tess. Of course I knew. But it really feels like I’m experiencing these deaths for the first time again. And for her to blow herself up to keep infected away from them feels…almost worse than FEDRA showing up.
I feel like we’re going to see Frank die since he’s already dead in the game. They’re going to make us love him then take him away, it’s the Neil Druckmann mo.
Overall, incredible directorial debut for Neil (as expected). He put so much fear into something I already know the beats of, they’re keeping it fresh even for those of us that know the story. Honestly, it’s really impressive.
Also, because I haven’t said it enough: Pedro as Joel ❤️
