I am absolutely losing it at the knowledge that for his BTTF musical audition, Roger Bart performed “Once in a Lifetime” in character as Doc.
No wonder he got the role; this really is peak Doc behavior, not just because it could be him explaining things, but also because this is absolutely something Twin Pines Doc would do to show his new son Marty that he is genuinely interested in his music hobby because Marty’s parents would be so distant and not involved in his hobby (and George is even vocally against it on account of the failure risk)… even if Marty would suffer great secondhand embarrassment as a result.

The Cast of Back to the Future on Broadway Includes Casey Likes, Hugh Coles, Liana Hunt, and others Attended: Winter Garden Theater, New York City, New York On: November 4, 2023 You may not know this about me but I've been a Back to the Future fan my entire life, and this iteration of it? Is even better than the movie. It broke me, okay. I AM BROKEN. This was actually my second viewing of the show, and getting to see it again with an incredible seat, not to mention meeting most of the main cast after...there are not words, I'm still floating. My favorite of the cast is Roger Bart as Doc, and unfortunately he doesn't really do stage door, but even without that, the night was perfect.

Doctober 2023 prompt #29: 2023
Warning: Long post
I dragged my bestie to go see the Broadway musical version of bttf earlier this year. IT WAS WONDERFUL. 💝💝💝
We watched it back in August, so my memory isn't the clearest and I'll probably forget something, but this is a long enough post as is.
SPOILERS FOR THE MUSICAL BELOW
I mean, its just the movie but in musical format, but they add things here and there that surprised me, so if u like to be surprised... there's your warning
Tumblr media
My friend and I sat in the middle of Row F (highlighted in green above). We wanted to be close, but not super close to have to look up at a weird angle. It was crazy to be so close AND SUPER WORTH IT. When the actors look out into the audience you can really feel like they're looking at you (from their POV they prolly dont see anything because the lights) its a really cool experience! 🤩🤩
OK SO MY FAVORITE LINE FROM THE MUSICAL THAT HAD ME ROLLING BECAUSE IT WAS SO UNEXPECTED WAS: "Is this what they call 'white trash'???" I won't spoil the full context bUT HE WAS REFERRING TO MARTY AT THAT MOMENT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Earth Angel scene made me love and appreciate the scene in the movie, and the song EVEN MORE THAN I ALREADY DID. THEY EVEN BROUGHT OUT THE BUBBLES AND IT WAS A WHOLE VIBE (yet another reason why I was grateful we sat in the front). They nailed the execution of the scene, people were cheering and everything during the kiss. Even I got hyped, whereas before, when I was just watching the movie, I was like 'aight.'
Tumblr media
The atmosphere in the theater hit different frfr. When Marty and Doc reunited at the end and hugged, I let out a little, "Yay!!" They had such good chemistry on stage, my favorite moments of them were when one of them would say something crazy and then the other would go, "What?" And then the other would go, "What??" And confusion ensues.
AND THEN, AS IF UNEXPECTED STUFF DIDN'T ALREADY HAPPEN, THE MOST UNEXPECTED THING HAPPENED AT THE END. THE DELOREAN FLEW.
IT FLEW.
INTO THE CROWD.
RIGHT ABOVE US.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND THAT MADE IT SUPER WORTH IT TO SIT CLOSE TO THE FRONT. I wonder what it looked like from the balcony though...
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Hugh Coles??? He single-handedly made me appreciate the character of George after seeing his performance.
Look at this mad lad, he got all the photos of Crispin Glover on his mirror 😱😱😱 manifested this man frfr
Tumblr media
He's one yarn ball away from an 'I'm crazy' wall
The SASS
Tumblr media
Man said 🚶‍♂️💅 AND IM HERE FOR IT
Ok, last pic, the matching pose 🤩💘
Tumblr media
FR HE NAILED THE CHARACTER PERFORMANCE, IT WAS INSANE. You really gotta see it to believe it. mf from west end too so imagine my surprise when I heard him in an interview with an accent ☠️☠️☠️
Literally me throughout the whole musical:
Tumblr media
I knew I was going to like the musical, but what I listed out here is basically the reason why I LOVED the musical. I love surprises so that's a big part of it as well.
Fave song: Used to be 'Put Your Mind To It' then it was 'It Works' but I think I settled on 'Something About That Boy' I just love duets and overlapping lines in songs. [But we all know the best song is Cake 💅]
TL,DR: The bestie and I went to see bttf the musical. i am a changed man... and now im here 🙃

WIP Wednesday
Got tagged by @galauvant to share a bit of a WIP, and I think she must have known exactly what she was doing when she tagged me because this is actually entirely her fault. Just...don't even look at me okay PLEASE DO NOT PERCEIVE ME RIGHT NOW. ---
“It happened, didn’t it?” George asks.
“Uh…what happened?” Marty hedges.
George gives him a look. He says, “It took a while, I’ll admit it. But, son.” He claps Marty on the shoulder, waits for Marty to meet his eyes. “I write science fiction. You yourself asked about time travel, that day in the cafeteria.” He shakes his head, huffing and scrubbing a hand through his hair. “Thirty years ago. Thirteen years before you were even born.”
Marty is frozen. He never really expected his parents to put it together. Why would they think of a random kid they met when they were teenagers, who was only in their lives for a few very weird days? “I…” He stalls, no idea how to continue.
“Your mother has no idea,” George says. “But me… I don’t think you realize the difference you made in my life. It stuck with me, Marty. And one day, I looked at you, and I saw him, and…well, it was impossible, but by then you were already friends with Doc, and what do I know? I make a living off impossibilities.”
“Dad, I…” Marty swallows. Sags. “Last week. It was last week, and I’m. God, I don’t even know what I am. I don’t…” He trails off again, overwhelmed by all of it. How heavy, how huge it all is. Way too big for him. Never mind what he is, he doesn’t know who he is, how he’s supposed to fit into this world he helped create but doesn’t have any memory of. “Everything’s different,” he whispers, wrapping his arms around himself. “You and Mom and Linda and Dave, me and Jennifer, it’s all…it’s better, but it’s not my life. Not really. The only person who’s familiar to me, the only person who still makes sense, is Doc.”

Went to see back to the future the musical last night and I just need to scream about several points
⚡️Marty knowing where '55 doc keeps his flashlights when he doesn't know himself
⚡️Doc wearing his radiation suit from his manhattan project days
⚡️Doc paying Goldie a WEDGE of cash to climb up and attach the cable to the clock tower because he's scared of heights
⚡️Lorraine: "Pick me up at 7 and take me to heaven"
Doc: *loud retching*
⚡️peanut brittle

So, @belphegor1982 asked me for my thoughts on the BTTF musical which I saw about 10 days ago, and I've managed to put them together and keep them as spoiler-free as possible--
Even before you go into the theatre, the merch store is separate, which is great when it's a rainy January night and you're waiting for the doors to open (which I was). I'm not sure if this has been a thing for previous productions at the Winter Garden Theatre, but for other Broadway shows I've seen in different theatres (Phantom and Anastasia), the merch was sold inside the theatre, and you needed a ticket to get to it/wait til the doors opened.
The pre-show immersion/ambiance is fantastic; not even Phantom can boast that.
There are numerous easter eggs for fans of the movies; it's so fun spotting them all.
It does not take long for the fourth wall to come tumbling down, and it is glorious. Marty even lampshades it in the opening number.
@knickynoo mentioned this in her writeup, but Doc and Marty are just as neurodivergent (if not moreso) than their movie counterparts
Doc is also so very obviously asexual in this version, I love it.
A small thing, but we actually get to hear Doc say "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything." In the movie, everyone credits him for saying it, but we never actually hear him say it.
Doc's involvement in the Manhattan Project is canonized in the musical-verse!
The DeLorean is borderline sentient and sassy
Most people know by now that they changed Twin Pines Doc's cause of death/the reason Marty goes back in time, and it works so much better for both practicality reasons on stage, and for the fact that the original was a charging bull elephant in the room.
Goldie Wilson gets an absolute banger for his song (as well he should!)
Another small thing, I like the little addition of Doc's fear of heights.
@wromwood pointed out how only Doc and Marty seem to acknowledge the existence of the chorus ensemble (Lorraine gets some backup singers for her number out of nowhere, but she takes no notice of them). I didn't even realize this until he mentioned it, and now I'm fascinated by the implications of Doc and Marty being hyper-aware of the fourth wall for whatever reasons.
The Act I closing number is gloriously chaotic.
...I could do an entire post about why I love "For the Dreamers" so much and how it delves so deeply into Doc's character. Just... GAH. This man has dealt with so many naysayers and considers himself a failure (it's telling that he did technically have a success with the Manhattan Project, but still considers that a failure--I'd theorize because he obviously feels so dang guilty about having the blood of innocent civilians on his hands as a result of it) but now he has hope that he will accomplish something great.
Not only do we have Marty worrying about Doc dying in 1985, we get to see him worried and unsure of his own fate. This kid has been Through It, and it isn't over yet.
THE WAY THEY DID THE ENCHANTMENT UNDER THE SEA DANCE. I cannot spoil this; you must experience this firsthand, but I will assure you that "Earth Angel" and "Johnny B Goode" are there in all their glory.
The Clocktower scene is spectacular. You're wondering how they'll pull it off onstage, and they just do it.
Others have mentioned this BUT WE GET THE LONE PINE HUG THAT SHOULD'VE BEEN IN THE MOVIE.
The absolute best meta joke comes courtesy of Jennifer near the end. I cannot spoil this either, but if you know, you know.
THAT FINALE (again, if you know, you know).

Last night, I had a dream that I'd gotten my hands on some really high-quality video from the Back to the Future musical. I wanted to play it for my family so they could see how great the show is, and the resulting "footage" that my dream concocted was enough to wake me up laughing.
It began with the "It's Only a Matter of Time" song, which started out normally with Marty singing his part. When it got to Goldie Wilson's solo is when things got weird, though. Goldie was played by Jeffrey Tambor. This guy:
Tumblr media
Which, even in my strange, distorted dream world, I had enough vague awareness to think to myself, "This doesn't seem quite right." Oh, and he was also dressed as an alligator. When his part of the song was over, he stood on a raised platform, lowered his big ol' alligator head, and ate Marty. And, to be totally honest, finishing an upbeat musical number about how things in your life are finally starting to come together only to end up immediately being eaten by an alligator is a very "Marty" thing to happen.
One of the people I was watching with was like, "Why would anyone want to see this musical? It's terrible!"
I feebly attempted to defend it. "No, it's a great show! It's won awards!"
We returned to watching, but the entire rest of the show ended up being video clips of people feeding cookies to dogs. It was a montage of people showing off their pets like, "Hey, this is my chihuahua, and today we're going to be feeding him a fresh-baked M&M cookie."
That was. That was the Back to the Future musical.

I had such an incredible time at Back to the Future: The Musical this past Saturday! I decided a couple of weeks ago on a much-needed solo adventure when I was able to score tickets in the eighth row for a good price!
Coming from the Pittsburgh area, it’s about 6 hours’ drive to the Big Apple. I left at 4 AM and followed the sun across Pennsylvania, sneaking a snapshot when the fog broke long enough (it was so foggy!).
Tumblr media
There was also some lovely flora and fauna amidst the fog at the rest stops, particularly at the PA-NJ border.
Tumblr media
Now, I have been to NYC three times before this in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Coming back felt like the most special and most normal thing at the same time. I missed it! While I could never live in a city, I enjoyed taking in the awe of the big buildings and novelties Times Square had to offer a couple of hours before my show (I should have went back for that Reese’s candle, but I def had NY Cheesecake for dinner).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now the show? Amazing. Spoilers below the cut.
First off, let me assure you that whatever seat you have, you will hear the show. I’m pretty sure my hearing was a tad damaged from the sonic booms and big chorus numbers, and I had a decent headache from it, so just be warned that it was a bit louder than anticipated. If you’re in the last row of the mezzanine, you’ll hear it all, I promise!
Some of my favorite things about the performance:
Hugh Coles makes it look like they plucked George McFly straight out of the film. He was incredible and by far the perfect embodiment of his character. So if you’re a big George fan, this is your show! If you’re not, he will make you fall in love with him! Incredible!
Roger Bart makes a joke about going to 2020 and there is no disease and a few people really cackled at that, and he broke character to look at someone and say thank you. Then, for probably 45 seconds, he broke character laughing with us over it, and Casey (Marty) is just standing there looking perfectly confused without cracking. It was a delightful way to start the second half!
Super enjoyed that when Marty meets Doc and is first trying to convince him to come see the DeLorean, Doc sees him go right for the flashlights in a drawer he couldn’t possibly know they were in, making him realize this kid might be who he says he is. I don’t know why that little detail stuck out to me as so significant, but it did. It was so satisfying from a storytelling perspective.
I loved George and Marty’s number in the backyard. We don’t get to see a lot of Marty really positively connecting with his dad in the movie unless it’s serving the “saving himself from non-existence” plot. I loved the genuine father-son feel of Marty dancing and George trying to copy him and Marty celebrating him for it. That felt good. One of those things theater is really good at capturing!
They filled the auditorium with bubbles during the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance and OH, talk about immersive atmosphere. Loved seeing everyone reach up to pop at least one bubble, like we were accepting some kind of offering. So fun!
Jennifer’s UNCLE HUEY. NICE.
The stage changes to the story were acceptable and believable. I almost didn’t realize the whole skateboard chase didn’t happen til the scene before the dance in the diner. Good job of keeping things succinct by combining various scenes and keeping the pace smooth!
This is nothing, but I saw a fake flower go flying off a bouquet and almost immediately one of the Texaco guys just tucked it in his rag when his staging brought him close enough during the number and kept going. I love seeing how discreetly the “oops” gets fixed on-stage.
After the show, I was out back to have my playbill signed by the cast when BOB GALE walked within a foot of me. I froze. I wasn’t sure. It has been my goal to ask this man the month and day of Doc Brown’s birthday for years and I BLEW IT. But he was quietly trying to get out of there I think. Someone got a quick photo with him before he disappeared in Times Square and UGHHH I can’t believe he was RIGHT THERE. (My friend who went to the 8 PM show said Alan Silvestri was there! How cool is this??)
My playbill was signed by all of the cast minus Roger Bart. He did not leave the theater that any of us saw. I did get to catch a photo with Mayor Goldie Wilson on his way back in, though!
Tumblr media
I also got to meet up briefly with @bri-to-the-future and give her a 60s Doc I crocheted for her! How fortuitous that we got to see the show on the same day and meet face-to-face!
Tumblr media
And then it started raining, my hotel didn’t get my reservation, and I was so mad that I just drove the six hours home (do not recommend). 🙃
It was certainly an adventure! I’m so glad I finally got to see it in-person, and I definitely recommend it! Now I can officially talk musical! 🎵 🎶
