Week 3: 23rd - 27th Oct
Artist Research
I continued my acrylic painting with inspiration from King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King" painted by Barry Godber. The artist was more used to working with digital media, however given the opportunity through this project he jumped at the opportunity and created one of the most memorable album covers to date. This was based on a self-portrait and completed using watercolours, as Godber had previously experimented with them at the Chelsea Art School. The effect was captivating, a disturbed man screaming at his viewers. This perfectly embodied the ‘schizoid man’ (based on one of thee songs on the album) and I felt I could relate to his chaos not only through the painting, but through the music as well.
I listened to the album as I painted, and the dynamic sounds really played into the chaos of my mind during one of these desperate, depressive moments I was trying to capture which proved to be a personal disruption this entire project.. Similarly to the artist, I was painting a self-portrait under the influence of emotion and music in a chaotic frenzy to my desired effect.
Below I have linked articles I used in my research.
