Just What Was Wan Smoking?
Tumblr media
I suspect, for the most part, Wan was smoking cheroots.
Cheroots are filterless cylindrical cigars, easy to hand roll and clipped at both ends.
In Thailand, they were traditionally rolled in banana leaves and as well as tobacco, the leaves of the Indian cork tree were often added, along with the flowers sometimes for fragrance.
Things like molasses, honey, rice wine, pineapple and banana were often used to sweeten the mixture.
Tumblr media
Sometimes cannabis could be added, which was historically used for pain relief in Thailand.
Tumblr media
It seems like Wan relies on smoking these as a way to manage his mental health issues, like many smokers, who reach for a cigarette when they are stressed, we often see him smoking when he is feeling disturbed.
We can see from the film that Khem seems very comfortable with the act of stealing but we only ever see him steal or think about stealing, cheroots on Wan's behalf.
He even splashes out on expensive imported "cigarettes," as a gift for Wan which his friend is clearly touched by. That recognition from Khem, that these are important for Wan.
It's as if he recognises that they are something Wan needs, we never see Khem smoke himself although they were both clearly fans of betel chewing before they were forbidden to do so in ManSuang.
Hence their black teeth.
Tumblr media
Betel nut is a stimulant and many people describe the act of chewing betel as giving them a bit of a high. It is certainly addictive but was also a standard part of socialising for a very long time in several parts of Southeast Asia and India.
As Khem and Wan are forbidden from chewing betel while they stay at ManSuang, it is likely that they both would have experienced some withdrawal symptoms and this probably made Wan rely on the cheroots even more.
Tumblr media
Cheroots originated in India along with beedies which historically were made from leftover scraps of tobacco and rolled into leaves.
Tumblr media
Cheroot smoking was very traditional both in India and Myanmar.

January 12, 2024!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For people of Odisha, nothing is more important than Lord Jagannath. And this could be seen in my neighborhood when all the residents gathered for welcoming the Srimandira Parikrama Arpana Ratha. We drew rangoli, and prepared offerings of arua chaula (white rice) and gua (betel nut). We had to wait for hours before the chariot could reach us, but it didn't dampen our excitement. Isn't that the whole purpose of special occasions, festivals and rituals? To bring people together, strengthen the community ties and celebrate the life!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shreemandira Parikrama or Heritage Corridor will be 75 m corridor around the Meghanada Pacheri of Jagannath Temple, Puri. Yajna, anukra ropana and formal inauguration ceremony of the project would be held on 17th January, 2024. Arpana Raths are visiting door to door and collecting donations of Akshat (rice) and betel nuts from the people, which will be sent to Puri for the yajna and rituals.

fire burn, & cauldron bubble.
Bottles clinked from behind the slightly-ajar door of Moonspell Apothecary's basement. A fire burned merrily in the clay cookstove, illuminating the room in its flickering orange light. The room was lined with shelves and worktables, filled with various large jars of bizarre contents. Some were easily identifiable herbs, others... not so much. Gnarled roots here, amanita caps there.
At the alchemy table, a slender woman worked in an apron and well-worn house shoes. Her hair was pulled back into a bun, and several of her trusty sun-charged stones were laid out on the table before her. She looked briefly to the small cauldron and watched the steam rise, listening for a moment to hear if it had begun to bubble.
Not yet... but soon. She had to hurry.
She turned back to her work, her hands reaching for the centrepiece stone. It was a beautiful fire opal. Each facet beneath the polished, smooth surface glimmered brightly, as if they were dancing flames. Her fingers closed around it for a moment, feeling its warmth and weight in her palm. The stone was smaller than most of its kind, almost swallowed entirely within her hand.
Elsinore closed her eyes, exhaling softly as she stood before the table, focusing. She'd gotten good at this part, feeling the stone's heat pass through her hand, and her magic reaching back out to meet it. She felt them unify, a surge jolting through her body, and began to speak under her breath. The spell was ancient as time, but the words still held their power.
"Ignitum lapidem, redde draconi vitale suum."
It began to glow, light bursting forth to cast the room in its brilliant rays, and the vampire smiled triumphantly, opening her eyes. She kept them squinted against the brightness, moving to drop the stone into the cauldron; the water had begun to boil. Once it lay beneath the surface of the water, she opened her eyes fully and ran for her ingredients.
She returned once she had them, muttering under her breath.
"Acorn," in it dropped, once she'd ground it into a fine powder.
"Adderstongue., and alkanet." She'd used these whole, but dried; both the stems and pretty flowers.
She stopped to stir it with a small wooden paddle, watching as the water begun to darken, and the rays of the stone became murky. No dimmer, but obscured as the herbs boiled. After a moment she added dried, crushed apple, watching the powder dissipate into the mixture.
After thirty minutes, it was time to add balsam fir, three clusters of the spiky, densely packed needles. A sprig of basil, an ear of barley. A bay leaf, unicorn's blood, betel nut powder, and finally four dried dandelion flowers. She stirred again, beginning a second incantation.
"Sana spiritum, seda animam. Depelle aegram, antiquam renova."
Her brow creased, hands splayed over the brew as she moved them to and fro, sparks shooting from her palms and hissing as they passed through the surface of the potion. The glowed beneath the liquid and then died.
She had one last step, before it was complete. It was the most important part. She thought for a moment, before choosing how it should taste.
"Turn this dark potion fine; like the darkest, decadent red wine." Red it turned, darkening until the opal's light slipped from the stone and into the potion, making it glow. Removing the cauldron from the heat, she waited a moment before straining and transferring it by funnel into a tall, slender glass bottle. The red depths shimmered like velvet, even in the darkness of the lab. Elsinore smiled wickedly, clasping the warm bottle in her hands.
She must deliver it tonight. It was at its most potent once it had fully cooled.

Note
There’s nothing in it except for the bladder snails, who are everywhere, and I cannot find where they’re laying their eggs. They honestly don’t bother me, so much as the hydra and algae. The algae because it’s killing off my live plants by blocking light, and the hydra because I want to have Cherry shrimp.
Oh ok!
Yeah if you want cherry shrimp (and want them to successfully breed) you will need to remove the hydra.
So, what I would personally do is get that tank cycled and remove the hydra, then allow your shrimp to take care of that algae. Your plants may take the hit, but I'm sure they'll bounce back! A similar thing happened when I went from changing my 30 gallon from a goldfish tank to a shrimp tank. I had hair algae but the shrimp took care of it perfectly! The plants made a rebound too.
Snails may eat the hydra, but mollies and gourami definitely will if you want to go the natural route. Probably just a single molly would work, but then you'll have to either rehome or separate once you put your shrimp in as a molly would go after your shrimp.
Fenbendazole (a dewormer) will kill the hydra and not harm shrimp or snails. You can get this from a livestock supply store, possibly a pet supply store, or a veterinarian (I'm sure they'd be interested in hearing it's for an aquarium haha).
Another, possibly more expensive but also safe treatment, is planaria zero. It uses betel nut powder/extract to kill the hydra, but it's an imported product-- hence pricetag. But the betel most likely works due to it having eugenol (a key ingredient to clove oil, which is used in the aquarium hobby/aquatic medicine as anesthetic and for euthanasia) and hydroxychavicol.

Significance Of Sawan Somvar Vrat
Sawan is the Hindu calendar’s fifth month. Shravana is another name for savan. It is a month dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, also known as Mahadeva, Maheshwar, Neelkanth, Rudra, Naresh, Shankar, and other names. savan is one of the most desired months on the Hindu calendar, as worshippers of Lord Shiva wait all year for this auspicious month to pay their respects to him. A large number of devotees go to Haridwar, Devghar, and other important sites while holding Kanvar on their shoulders. During the holy month of Sawan, a variety of celebrations are observed. Sawan is also a month that is joyfully welcomed by the people, since the month of Shravan ushers in the monsoon, bringing respite from the blistering heat of summer.

Sawan's Festivals
During this holy month, a lot of celebrations are held. As we all know, India is a diverse country, and sawan celebrations differ in the northern and southern parts of the country. In the month of Sawan, the northern area celebrates a variety of festivals.
● Sawan Somvar Vrat ● Kamika Ekadashi ● Hariyali Teej ● Nag Panchami ● Shravana Putrada Ekadashi ● Varalakshmi Vrat
What exactly is the Kanwar Yatra?
Kanvar Yatra, also known as Kanwar Mela, is a religious fair that begins in the sacred month of Shravana and lasts for three months (Savan). Lord Shiva devotees trek barefoot to Har ki Pauri in Haridwar, Gangotri in Uttarakhand, and other locations to collect holy water from the sacred river Ganga and dedicate it to Lord Shiva. Kanwariyas are devotees who engage in this yearly pilgrimage (Kanwar Mela).
The narrative of Kanvar Mela goes back to the period when the ocean was being churned (Samudra Manthan). A fatal poison was also received as a product, along with various other items. Mahadeva swallowed all of the poison to rescue the world, and as a result, his neck went blue. It is for this reason that he is also called Neelkanth. Ravana, a fervent disciple of Lord Shiva, is said to have taken Gangajal and sprinkled it over Shiva Lingam using a Kanvar (a wooden pole at the ends of which weights are tied). Lord Shiva was finally set free from the negative effects of the poison he had swallowed.

Sawan’s Vrat
In the month of savan, people observe three types of Vrats (fasts). The following is a list of them:
1. Sawan Somvar Vrat: Sawan Somvar Vrat is a fast practiced on Mondays throughout the month of savan. 2. Solah Somvar Vrat: Solah Somvar Vrats are a set of 16 fasts that are practiced on 16 consecutive Mondays. 3. Pradosh Vrat: Pradosh Vrat is a fast kept till Pradosh Kaal in respect of Shiva Parvati to obtain their heavenly blessings.
Vrat rules based on scriptures
● There are particular traditions to perform when fasting in the month of Sawan, according to the scriptures. The following is a list of them: ● The person who is fasting should get up in the morning and shower to get rid of any impurities from their body. ● In any Shiva Temple, milk should be served to Shiva Lingam. ● To worship Mahadeva, an altar should be put up, and the Puja Sthal should be carefully cleansed. Participants of the fast must take the oath to invest themselves in Mahadeva’s devotion during the fast with all their hearts and soul. ● Lord Shiva’s prayers are offered multiple times a day. The very first puja must be performed first thing in the morning, and the second after sunset. ● An oil lamp is lit for the puja, and flowers are presented to Lord Shiva. ● Mantras are recited, and Mahadeva is given nuts, Panchamrit, coconut, betel leaves, and other offerings. ● The Sawan Vrat Katha (Solah Somvar Vrat Katha) is an essential aspect of Sawan that must be performed during the Vrat. Mahadeva’s life is chronicled in the Vrat Katha. ● Prasad is given among family members as soon as the Puja is over. ● The fast can be broken and normal meals taken after the evening Puja.
Mantra for Sawan Somwar Vrat:
Throughout savan, any Shiva Mantra, including Om Namah Shivay, can be recited.
Who observes the Vrat?
Marital ladies practice the Vrat to live a happy and contented married life. This fast is also observed by unmarried women to be graced with a good spouse and a happy married life. Anyone who follows the fast with unwavering faith and devotion is said to be granted by Mahadeva himself.
History of Sawan
sawan Vrat, like every other Hindu religious event, has a backstory. It is said that once there existed a person who was extremely wealthy and lived a lavish lifestyle. He had all he needed, but the lack of a kid was the single source of anxiety and worry in his life. The guy and his wife were Lord Shiva enthusiasts who used to fast on Mondays to appease him. Goddess Parvati, seeing their unwavering devotion, urged that Mahadeva reward the couple with a child. As a consequence, they were able to have a normal son at long last. Amar was the name given to the son, but with his birth came the prediction that he would die just at age of 12.
The youngster was taken to Kashi for his schooling when he got older. His maternal uncle accompanied him, and his parents instructed him to practice Yagna and charity everywhere he went. They passed by a princess’s wedding ceremony, where the groom-to-be was partially blind. The groom’s family was concerned that the mystery of their son’s half-blindness would be revealed. They asked Amar to stand in for the groom, which he consented to. He married the princess out of love, but he didn’t want to mislead her. He opted to write this truth on his bride’s bridal stole (chunri). When the bride got his message, she stayed at her parents’ place and waited for her first husband. Amar went on his trek and arrived at Kashi.
Throughout this period, Amar stayed true to his parents’ words and committed to holy activities. He sat at a Shiva temple on his 12th birthday, continuing to present Bel Patra (Bilva leaves) to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva opted to gift the infant with the boon of long life when Lord Yama arrived to take away the boy’s life, and as a consequence, Amar did not die and Yamaraj departed empty-handed. Amar came home with his wife, blessed by Mahadeva himself, and his family’s unwavering devotion.
Astrological Importance
It is thought that when sawan begins, the Sun enters the Zodiac Sign Leo, which has varied effects on each of the 12 Zodiac Signs.
Conclusion:
Mahadeva demonstrated that he has always been there for his sincere believers to assist them and shower their wonderful blessings. And, that is why there are thousands of devotees who observe the Sawan Somwar Vrat during Sawan.

Fast story of Putrada Ekadashi
Lord Krishna himself had told the importance of Putrada Ekadashi to Dharmaraj Yudhishthir. According to the legend, in a city, there lived a king named Suketuman, whose wife's name was Shaivya. The king and queen had no children, about which he was always worried. He was always worried about who would take over his throne after that who would perform his last rites, Shraddha, Pind Daan, etc. after his death who would liberate him, and who would satisfy his ancestors. Just thinking about all this, the king started falling ill.
Once the king went out to visit the forest and started seeing the beauty of nature, there he saw how deer, peacocks, and other animals and birds were enjoying life with their wives and children. Seeing this he became even more disturbed. He started thinking that despite doing so many good deeds, I was childless. Then the king felt thirsty and started wandering here and there in search of water. While wandering, his eyes fell on the hermitage of sages built on the banks of a river. Being a devotee, the king went there and paid obeisance to all the sages. Seeing the simple nature of the king, all the sages were extremely pleased with him and asked him to ask for a boon. To which the king replied, “O God! By the grace of God and you Saint Mahatmas, I have everything, only I have no children, due to which my life is meaningless.”
Hearing this the sage said, “King! God himself has sent you here today with a special blessing on you. Today is Putrada Ekadashi and you should fast on this Ekadashi with full devotion. By doing this you will get a son. Hearing this from the sage, the king observed that fast and according to the rules Break the fast on the day of Dashashi. After a few days, the queen became pregnant and gave birth to a bright and successful son and finally, the king attained salvation. In this way the importance of this fast increased manifold.
Surefire and effective remedies on the day of Putrada Ekadashi
Putrada Ekadashi to get the blessings of Lord Vishnu
