RAD Student Files: Lucifer, The Celestial Realm’s Bastard Pride

before i start the post, Thank you guys for the support^^ it really means alot. and im going to go very in depth with these post, so i decided to make each brother have their own spotlight by making it individual post.

also i apologize in advance if i cant joke around much with these post hehe^^;

Spoiler warnings, so you have been warned!

Background and Origin:

Lucifer,as famous as he is right now. With the Netflix show and other representations of him throughout history, his name has only been mentioned once in the bible.

“ How art thou fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, Son of the Morning,” (Isiah 14:12 King James Version)

this simple line was said to actually be a foreshadowing of the fall of the King of Babylon, Nebuchadrezzar . Some say it is alluding to the fall of a Pheonician God, Helal who sought after the Chief God’s throne and fell (pretty similar eh? actually dfq too similar) .

some say that Lines from Ezekiel might be marking a prophecy of Lucifer’s faith (Ezekiel 28: 11-19 , the passage is alittle too long, so if you want to see it just search that up), the passage speaks about King Tyre and what his pride did to him not only that but the passage then goes to mention “ the Anointed Cherub”. This is said by Jonathan Edwards, a Philosophical Theologian is a reference to Lucifer; as Lucifer was made highest of the angels, not only this but is said to be the closest to the throne of God.

Now, who and what is Helal? the actual Hebrew text has the name “Helal”( which still meant Morning star) instead of Lucifer. both do mean the same thing, an Astrological Phenomenon.

the actual name of Lucifer came from the Latin Vulgate version of the Bible.Lucifer, which meant “Light Bearer” and was directly connected to the Planet Venus. As the bible gets translated over and over again, this later turned Lucifer instead of being just a figure of speech, became an individual being. most of the stories about Lucifer are taken from Poetic literature about the bible and legends.

there are many interpretations to the fall of Lucifer( the Anointed Cherub), so i will give the most well known and then briefly touch upon the other interpretations.

Lucifer, before his fall was said to be God’s most perfect creation, a Cherub ( some would disagree and say a seraph, but more on that later) whose beauty was unmatched, whose knowledge was above those of his kind; God gave him knowledge that only Lucifer can have. second only to the father himself.he was the leader of the angels but, he grew in pride and decided that being second to the father is not enough. that he has to be equal--no greater than the father. With this, he waged war that caused great chaos throughout heaven. Michael (in some accounts, Gabriel) the archangel second to him lead the army that counters his and was able to defeat him and cast him and those who sided with him out of Heaven. following the Book of Revelations, it is also accounted that third of the angels in Heaven fell with Lucifer.

as he was cast into the Abyss, he is to bound there until the day of Judgement, but with his despise of God, he then goes to the mortal world to tempt and torment the Father’s most beloved creation, Humans. he does this so that he can acquire their souls and keep them away from God( this was stated in the Apocrypha, Enoch). it is said that he appears as a beautiful innocent child and uses this form to easily tempt humans to follow his words.

some interpretations state that the reason for Lucifer’s rebellion is because, God made another being, Jesus, who was Higher than him. as Lucifer only is near the throne of God, Jesus is to sit on the throne with God for all eternity. which infuriated Lucifer.

and in some interpretations, it is said that God permitted Lucifer to be able to tempt humans. and in some Gnostic Christian Sects they believe that Lucifer isn’t even evil, but the first-born of God who is to save humanity with his gift of Knowledge.

Jonathan Edwards, even goes as far as to say the fall of Lucifer to him pleases God, as his fall is for the greatness of God that is to come.

Lucifer in the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the mage, Lucifer is stated to be one of the four Principal spirits. in the True keys of Solomon, Lucifer is identified to be one of the three demons who can command all others of his kind, he is said to rule over demons in Europe and Asia ; the other two demons who have the same authority is Beezlebub and Astaroth . as for other legends, they state that Lucifer is the Consort of Lilith ( weird but okay?). according to Peter Binsfield, Lucifer represents the Sin of Pride; to note, it is said that Pride is the King of all sins, which seems fitting for Lucifer. He is also the Opposing force to Saint John the Baptist. in the Friar Rush, Lucifer is said to be the “ Prince of Gluttony” .

as for Lucifer’s position in hell, there is some debate over it, on one side it is said that Lucifer is the emperor of Hell, with Satan being second to him and Beezlebub third to him. for some Demonographers, Lucifer is a great Lover of justice in Hell. and the other side, it is said that it is either Satan or Beezlebub.

So How does it show in the game?

Lucifer in the game is well known as the loyal right hand of Diavolo ( the devil?). He is obedient to Diavolo’s wishes and does everything he can to make sure no one opposes him, even his brothers. this is quite different from the things mentioned above. Lucifer is supposed to be the highest one in Hell, he was able to even rebel against Heaven for it, yet here he is...serving a Demon?

Lucifer is shown to be a sadistic, strict, over bearing, secretive, but caring(?) sibling. he shows to be dealing with alot of problems with the past especially concerning Lilith.

(the sadistic side could be a reference to how he loves to torture and torment humans. just a guess)

the game seems to take liberty of taking shifting and twisting the origins to make a more human Lucifer, his story is also very similar to what his origins state.

but, the thing i want to focus on is Lucifer’s model, in the game he is stated to be seraphim, an angel that has 6 wings( this information was given by Luke during Chapter 5), but his model only goes to show 4. now, in the information above, Lucifer is said to be a Cherub, so whats with that?

to be technical, Cherubs are angels of Knowledge, which for others means, his sin is caused by his knowledge. Seraphims are angels of Charity, while they are the highest choir, if you try to connect it with his sin, it doesn’t match. but, since the game used the Seraphim interpretation so we’ll go with that.

Lucifer is also shown to have dark hair and his wings have turned black, modern interpretations do this as to show his turn to the darkness, but some interpret it as the result of Lucifer’s wings being burned. his character model shows him with only 4 wings, so where’s the 3rd pair? most likely burned off during his fall to the Devildom , or they were burned during the Celestial war. and the implications that Micheal did it might be likely, since his origins states that Micheal was the one to defeat Lucifer and His army.

Diavolo when he gushes about Lucifer, he always goes on about how Lucifer was so bright and blinding, which could be a reference to his name as Light Bearer.

in regards to Lucifer’s relationship with Lilith, During chapter 5, we were able to find out about that Belphie, Beel, Lilith, and Lucifer used to be very close. hoping this game doesnt take the incest route, we can say that Lucifer and Lilith are just very close siblings rather than the original interpretation that He is a Consort of Lilith. much of the lore is still in the making, so most of the things are just possibilities.

um hello excuse me i just listened to that teenage dirtbag video and now i have no choice other than to ask you... what is up. that voice was lovely, the range the performer had when switching to the girl's role i?? hello??? so is this the uh... god um. dear evan hansen or the uhhhh oh my god sorry im typing as im thinking this is hell. the other one. be more chill? i have some friends into these things but never paid much attention but after that vid my inch rest is how do you say, Peaked.

it just hit me that the right word was actually 'piqued' rip me

hahahaha yeah i can tell you All About It.....see my origin story is that uh. fuckin uh right so i vaguely knew deh existed back when it was broadway-debuting at the end of 2016 and probably many of us were vaguely aware it existed, but then in the next summer (2017) i heard a cover of one of its songs and i was like “i can tell this is one of those songs that would be given way more context if i knew the plot” and by that point the wikipedia entry had a plot summary available and i got that context and even though he was fairly briefly mentioned, one of the side characters Piqued My Interest b/c i just knew like. aha that already feels like a character type i would rly latch on to. and this was in the back of my mind for a while and for like the next year i would intermittently check out another song or two or get a little bit more lore, but it wasn’t until like, fall 2018 i finally went “you know what, i am gonna dive in for Maximum Lore actually” and my motivation for doing this was cuz i wanted to find out all the info about The One Side Character lmfao, like, the “main plot” and “entire actual show” to me is just the Lore for him basically b/c that was truly my angle hahaha and my interest was further piqued b/c like i quickly went “oh so he’s secretly in love with the protagonist right, got it,” which like. was a latent vibe i got from that very first wikipedia plot summary readthrough tbh lmfao. and is True.

and then even after deciding to dig into the lore and confirming that Yes i love this character as i thought i would it took like another week or two before i ever like, Watched dear evan hansen lmfaooo and i’ve never stopped complaining about the show since ljdfs but not Not b/c the character isn’t as good as i thought (or b/c Nothing Else is good either, but. you know how it is. #canon 9_9 ) and then in the course of looking for More Content i was you know, looking at a variety of posts On Here and looking at some behind-the-scenes / bonus content type stuff on youtube and went “oh well hey the actor that plays that character i love is also a nice funny guy according to testimony and also that i like his vibe in these vids” and, fun fact as is the nature of live theatre (and it being like, oct / nov 2018 by then) he was not still the Current actor for said character but had, in fact, moved on to be more chill and Already Completed a late summer off-broadway run as the lead (and a bway run had been announced already, though im not Certain i remember the point / how i became aware of this lol).....which again, i too had Heard Of (and had once ages prior coincidentally leafed thru the book once and read a few excerpts but knew nothing abt anything beyond that).....but hilariously while i Knew he was in bmc thru some 101 research, i was like “okay i’ll move on to that in a sec” while focusing on deh for a while still b/c it was not until i happened to casually look up “okay so what does his character do in this show i’m completely unfamiliar with” that i went “oh fuck he’s the LEAD????!!!” lmaooo like i did Not realize this and that upped my urgency abt it

a very very broad description of bmc is that it’s a Fun Show coz it’s this teen scifi Magical Realism plotline classic musical comedy type of thing, a genre we all already know and love lol /j, and importantly, the music is fuckinggg Bops. very common “gateway drug” is This song. there’s an Original Broadway Cast Album all on youtube (and, somewhat confusingly im sure, an Original Cast Album, but that was an off-off-bway run, and i’m interested squarely in the off-bway and bway versions lmfao, so, and that is what one will get recommended from me (more updated versions of all the songs anyways)) and also, this is basically a tangential thought i had but circling back around to deh, My Guy (will roland as jared kleinman) does not actually get all that much singing material in the show (v different situation from be more chill) even in the song that features his character most heavily, but that song also happens to be the most fun song in deh and also a bop, and here’s an especially fun live performance to check out if u wanna, the other two dudes are not official cast members lmfao but still

and like, when all this deh-ing and enthusiastic bmc-ing (which i got into Just In Time to be following along with its broadway run, which was very fun to do) affirmed like boy i love this Actor’s Material for sure, i did a little digging into his nicher Credits, including, one fateful day in march, his tv credits, which meant i like stumbled across the fact he has this recurring role in Billions(tm) and that stumbling = immediately falling flat on my face b/c i Loved the content and we coincidentally got really into it Just In Time before the next season’s stuff started airing with him in it, and that was truly an Experience we’ve been having ever since. that’s it’s own insane tangent b/c this show is fucking Something Else but, jsyk, since i am talking about “billions” left and right and stuff, that’s the vague context for that. latched onto a character -> the actor -> the actor’s other stuff, and that [other stuff] is getting brought up around here a lot, especially billions.....we’re having fun and following our hearts with it lmao

i’m Not Great at finding a balance between “doing an elaborate lore dump when someone asks me ‘what’s X about?’ and i spend the next several hours just play by play walking them through the whole thing” and “trying to avoid doing that where i get Too In Depth and instead end up just overly glossing over it all and they’re like ‘that doesn’t give me any info :/’” but i Can and Will talk more in depth about any of this stuff b/c yeah........but between deh and bmc, i definitely like bmc more Overall and....in the specifics of it too.....and like the obcr way better......and uh Everything about it better lmfaooo but i also love the particular characters Jared and Alana, side character teens in deh, so im always about That as well..........but if u were like “hm which might i look into a little first,” i gotta say like, i like bmc better both as a matter of My Personal Taste and from a more critical standpoint of “what is the show meant to be / does it accomplish what it wants to” type stuff. even though deh is the critical darling lmfao go figure! *i* decide what’s good, actually, and as we all know, i’m correct and a genius. which, haha im joking, but i Am right and i Am not Not smart in ways lol

aaaaaaand yeah additionally like. can and will answer Any more particular questions about any of this shit b/c, it’s my shit, and you know how i roll

and p.s. glad you liked the Teenage Dirtbag it is such a good performance lol. naturally getting real into this one actor / singer’s shit means that there’s also stuff Outside [performing a particular role] which is still some sweet sweet content, such as other solo performances during a concert / cabaret stuff.....the lore is Very Rich and is V Good so it’s fun

My thoughts about His Dark Materials

I’ve finished volume 3 last week, and I wanted to come back to the earlier discussion now that I have a fresh memory of the conclusion.

And ooh boy, I don’t like that conclusion, but not for the reasons mentioned by star-anise that started this discussion. I’ll start with my own criticism, and go back to that after.

[Obviously, SPOILER WARNING, proceed at your own risk.]

So, in the last 30 pages or so, we get:

a reiteration in even clearer terms of that “servants have dog daemons” point, that a daemon represents a person “true” nature. We already had a branch of the previous discussion on that topic, and we all agreed it was bad. Some where doubting that it was what Pullman actually meant, or whether it was only some unreliable narrator’s opinion. Well, for me there’s no doubt anymore. At least, there’s a vague suggestion that it isn’t definitely fixed and that people could, theoretically, change, they just choose not to, so you know, silver lining and all that....

Lyra coming into her prophesied role as the “new Eve” and somehow preventing all the Dust from exiting the universe through the huge gap in reality caused by the Church’s bomb, without any explanation of what made her special or even how it works at all, and without any real story need for that, since the (good) Angels would close it soon after anyway. It’s just that, looping back to the foreshadowed prophecy, only for the sake of meeting expectations, but I find that it actually weakens the story a lot.

a confirmation that Angels are dumb-asses, and have been so for the last 300 years. For real, if it was so important, why did they need to ask Will specifically, and not any of the previous knife holder, how to close the portals?

and not only are they dumb, they are also mean for no reason to the kids that JUST FRICKING SAVED THE UNIVERSE, no big deal. Seriously, I’m not opposed to bad/sad endings when they are credible, but this one, gosh, I’m so angry, there was probably a dozen workarounds to have a happy ending instead, based on the books own premises. Just to name a few:

They are closing dozens of portals that have stayed open for hundred of years, but really, the universe can only withstand A SINGLE portal, strict limit, I promise. No way you can keep two portals open, no way. Yeah, I don’t believe you...

OK, OK, let’s admit we can’t keep two portals open. But we can open the second one briefly every 5 years or so to visit each other’s world, right? No? It will create a specter? AND HOW IS THAT A PROBLEM EXACTLY?!! You just fricking dealt with thousands of specters that accumulated and grew over a couple centuries. One specter every five years is peanuts. Just send a couple Angels to get rid of it as soon as it is spawned, and voilà! Or a squad of volunteer ghosts. With the number of people dying over 5 years over the whole multiverse, I’m sure you’ll get more than enough volunteers. You bunch of ungrateful pricks, you owe this two kids at least that much, and probably a thousand times more.

And what about the “natural” portals, those not created by the knife that do not leak Dust? Oh, you will close them to make sure I don’t waste my life looking for them? WHAT THE HECK!! Alternate proposition: I promise I won’t look for them myself, YOU look for them, AS YOU INTENDED TO ANYWAY, and instead of closing them, you map them, and if you finally find a route from my world to hers, you come back and tell me? Yeah, you know, try to find a solution instead of squashing hope and all that? I think someone needs to read Pandora’s myth again, the importance of hope and all that...

(sorry for all the caps. i’m REALLY *that* angry)

Also, in the grand explanation of everything at the end, we get told that the big fight between “good” and “evil” is actually a fight between wisdom and ignorance, with a flat affirmation that half the universe, including all organized religions, was fighting on the side of ignorance, to keep people dumb. I’m more or less an atheist myself, and even me, I feel so offended by such a rash statement. That’s such a narrow understanding of the origin and role of religion, how can you write a whole three books about it and come to such a broad and coarse conclusion? Get some nuance, dammit.

..... Probably the worst ending I’ve read to a series that I enjoyed.

Because yes, I enjoyed most of the series, it’s just the conclusion that is so awfully terrible, but the vast majority of the story is interesting and entertaining.

If I understood the gist of her argument correctly, she’s annoyed by Dust’s sudden change of behavior during adolescence, the claim "that puberty is the most pivotal time for a child developmentally”, to quote a later post in the thread. But in my interpretation, the books are NOT claiming that. I don’t know what the TV series did with that topic, but numerous points in the books point to a more continuous transition:

Lyra is always able to interact with Dust, through the alethiometer or Dr. Malone’s devices, even before she meets Will and fall in love or has sex.

The kids become gradually more aware of the Specters, it’s not a sudden shift. And they become fully vulnerable to them before their Daemons take a fixed form, showing that even before that they already have accumulated a lot of Dust.

There are various remarks that Dust accumulates slowly overtime. It says that young children have very little Dust (compared to adult), but not none at all. And it also says that old and wise persons have much more Dust than the average adult, evidence that Dust keeps accumulating over the whole life, it’s not just one change happening at puberty and/or with the discovery of sex/love.

Daemons do go through a sudden change of behavior at puberty, but a) it doesn’t seem related to Dust directly, and b) it’s implied they can still change, they just don’t want to. This sudden change is not “encoded into the physics of the universe”, it’s just a statistical trend, not an absolute truth.

On the other hand, supporting star-anise argument, there is one such change, but it’s about the mulefa, not the humans, so I’m not really sure what to make of it. The mulefa physically cannot accumulate Dust unless/until they absorb oil from the wheel trees, and so their youngsters do get through an abrupt transition when they get big enough to start using wheels, which is the closest equivalent for them of puberty. But once again, no link with love or sex.

At no point whatsoever is Dust presented as related to Sin, except by Miss Coulter and Lyra’s world’s Church, which are obviously bad guys and misguided.

So personally, I don’t fault the books on that topic, and I find that they present, on that topic specifically, a nuanced and interesting take. I think a more legitimate criticism in that direction is about the “special nature” of humans compared to animals, as if humans aren’t just another kind of animal, as if animals are not conscious at all. They are, and we should respect that more, and treat animals with more compassion in general. Animals should attract Dust too, even if at a slower rate.

(Also, I’m still annoyed by that “Daemon as true nature” bit...)

Archetype fic infodump

Because I thought far too often about this in far too much detail before I started writing, here is a small glance into the bts ideas behind this archetype fic of mine. The final (!!!!) chapter is written and with my betas, and this is here now because I’m pretty sure there’s nothing new in the fic itself. So there shouldn’t be spoilers in here for anyone who’s read up to chapter ten. Okay, so first, I’ll put the notes I made for myself before I started writing. Then I’ll try to answer specific questions or comments/theories people have had over the course of this thing. Anything that was answered in the fic itself I tried to leave out (because it’s already so long ugh), and there was some stuff I added to the notes on chapter one which I didn’t bother to replicate. If anyone has any questions about anything here, or wants more detail, please do ask. I’m finding it hard to remember everything I thought about as I created this world, but I am perfectly willing to talk about this at length when prompted. As this is mostly self indulgent (so self-indulgent; I feel quite cringey even posting it) I’d love to answer things other people want to know so I can indulge more than just myself. As usual, this is long! Keep yourselves hydrated while you read.

Isak: Outcast

Sonja = Beauty

Emma = another Outcast (note, we never met her in Even’s PoV even though we did briefly hear about her, but she was formative in Isak’s and so we may meet her in the Isak PoV sections)

Eskild = Fairy Godmother

Sana = the Seer

Jonas = the Wise Man

Magnus = the Fool

Mahdi = Prince Charming

Eva = Princess

Noora = Princess. (fun fact: Noora was going to be a Charming, but then I decided that given how long the damn fic already was that I’d just make them both Princesses and have them out of archetype. If I was going to do more with Noora, I do feel like Charming would work for her.)

Vilde = the Sidekick

Chris = the Sidekick

Elias = the Hero

Yousef = the Fool (in the sense that he tells the truth in an uncomfortable way)

Adam = The Sidekick

Mutta = the Sidekick

Even’s mother = Beast

Even’s father = Beauty

Isak’s mother = Beast (fun fact: I see her as the ‘Pack’ type discussed in the book Even finds)

Isak’s father = Beauty (we never meet him, but his absence was a factor in how Isak turned out, of course. I see this relationship as one where the Beauty is mismatched to the Beast type and that’s at least partially why the whole thing fell apart)

Common archetypes (note, this isn’t an exhaustive list, just the ones mentioned in this fic):

Beast, Beauty, Damsel, Seer, Fairy Godmother

How does being a Beast affect Even [note, some of this didn’t make it into the fic itself] -- he’s expected to be dominant and aggressive, having temper tantrums and rages. Needs ‘control’ to keep him in line. He doesn’t enjoy this at all and it’s never felt truly natural to him. Yearns to be allowed to be playful and ‘childish’ - reckless and free spirited. ‘Director of his own life’ -- is allowed to be silly with Isak. Running, jumping, little things like kissing in a stupid way through to big things like running naked through the streets or skinny dipping. Adventure sports etc.

How does being an Outcast affect Isak [note, some of this changed as I was writing] -- he’s mistrustful, stays on the sidelines, feels left out, wary of society and pressures, fed up with expectations (eg the bad boy, the rebel, the player etc etc), simultaneously anxious and wants to fit in. Creates his own little ‘in group’ with Even. Finally feels like he fits. Anti hero of a sort. On the margins, never quite accepted. Expected to end up with another outcast or to remain alone. But he wants something more. Is entranced by Even when he meets him, but very wary because he’s a Beast and is he only tame-ish because he’s with his Beauty.

Questions from various places:

I'm wondering if, given there's Beast's Beauty but then also Sleeping Beauty (and Snow White is also a lot/all about her beauty), if you're going to go into that? Like, different types of Beauties (maybe different types of Beasts?)?

Strangely prescient idea presented in the comments of chapter one by @fille-lioncelle. The answer, of course, is yes. There are different types of each of those things, though not quite in that way. The types weren’t quite so structured as this, but the basic idea behind this is right: the types are a lot more complex than originally considered by many of the characters, and just as there are multiple Beast types, there are multiple Beauty types as well.

It was also heartbreaking to see how deeply internalized is Even's belief in the destructiveness of his beastly urges, so much so that he pushes away even good and positive beastly traits (like protectiveness and caring for others) because he's so conditioned to think beastly urges are a disaster.

Comment from @arindwell on chapter 3. That was one of the things I most wanted to do with this fic: to show how destructive a rigid set of expectations and behaviours is for a society and the people in it. That Even believes all his good traits are tied to being a Beast and that they will eventually, inevitably betray him and make him hurt the people around him was essential to his progress. But it was really hard to actually do :(

It was also really interesting to find out that Isak has had to learn to behave like a Beauty because of his mom. It makes me interested in whether there are other people who have learned to take on characteristics of other archetypes for various reasons.

Comment by @arindwell on chapter 4. This one, the answer is definitely yes even though we didn’t really see it in the fic itself. That’s central to the nature/nurture premise: that the society has decided on these rigid ideas of what each type must be like, and any deviation is bad and wrong. But, of course, human nature is not like that and we all have aspects of all traits. It’s just to what degree and how they manifest, and hopefully that’s shown in this fic somehow.

I think in the last chapter you talked about how Isak learned to behave like a Beauty and that Even might have recognised that in him and it's just throwing so much more nature vs nurture questions at this haha are types genetic? Are there dominant and recessive ones? When can you tell?

Comment on chapter 5 by @fille-lioncelle. Are types genetic? No not really, at least not in a way I can quantify because I am not a scientist. I mean, there’s a slightly higher chance for offspring of certain types to be those types but due to mystical fic magic there’s no real scientific genetic pattern here. So, eg, Even the Beast is a product of a Beauty/Beast archetype pairing, and yet Isak the Outcast is the product of another. Certain types are more common but that’s just a thing that happens. Maybe it’s a hormonal thing? Who knows? Certainly not me. So, of course, this mean there are no recessive/dominant genes etc etc. However, when can you tell? It’s something which is inherent in the kids, but they don’t get formally typed until they’re older toddlers (4-ish?) So for those first few years, parents watch their kids like hawks going, ‘I wonder if he’s a Fool’ or ‘What a cute little Damsel’ etc etc and generally they a) know by the time of typing and b) have some pretty set expectations already when the typing does happen.

I was wondering - if Eskild is the Fairy Godmother type, how does that work? Do they usually find people to take care of, like a single person they choose to help and focus on? Or do they take care of multiple people in general, like specific types like Outcasts?

Comment by Rissa on chapter 5. So, yeah in a way Fairy Godmother’s do like to have their little projects. So they might adopt one or two special people to nurture and mother. But they also just really like looking after everyone; their nature makes them want to make sure everyone is at ease and doing well.

Also, does everyone remain the type they are for the rest of their life, or do they change? And also, how are types determined when you're born?

Comment by Rissa on chapter 5. Yeah, everyone keeps their archetype for their whole lives. But as we’ve seen with Isak, they can adapt and take on traits of other types. As for how the types are determined, this is one I’m a little fuzzy on. ‘It just happens?’ was my go to hand wave while I was writing. But basically, I imagine it as a process which is half observation and half testing.

You know what's really interesting? and stop me if I'm wrong haha, im just thinking out loud! But I think one of the main differences between Outcasts and Beauties (aside from the obvious ones) is that Outcasts seem very protective of others that they take under their wing. Kinda like a fairy godmother type, almost? But in that Outcasts take care of other types that maybe feel like Outcasts as well.

Comment by Rissa on chapter 7. I think there’s definitely something in here. The Outcasts do tend to take each other under their wings, and that’s why they make their little in groups. When you’re pushed to the margins and assumed to not fit, you find those places to fit on your own. So they are super sensitive to those close to them who also feel on the outer. So of course, when Isak starts to get close to Even, his own feelings of alienation and being on the outside would have resonated with Isak and made him a lot more willing to drop his guard faster than usual. But Jonas was right: they don’t usually do it for people outside their archetype and so isak is still a little unusual.

I wonder if, like gender and sexuality, they're treated differently by different groups throughout history.

Comment by @fille-lioncelle on chapter 9. Yeah, pretty much. I mean, Isak talks about that a little in chapter ten of course. But it wasn’t until the church decided it needed a better way to control the population and started embedding the stories that things became so rigid and defined. I’d like to take this chance to say I was a bit nervous about this idea because it’s about humans, of course, not religious beliefs themselves. Church leaders, wanting to retain a power they felt slipping away, doing what they can to take it back and keep it for themselves. It’s reflective of real things that real people did in our world but it’s not meant as a suggestion that religion itself is a problem. Just the way it’s weaponized sometimes.

This makes me wonder if the subcategory thing applies to all the types? I'd think it would, or at least for most of them. Also, I wonder if it applies to Isak/what subtype he'd be.

Comment by @kapplebougher on chapter 9. Well, as we’ve seen, yes other types do have subcategories as well. The interesting thing about Outcasts, however, is that for the most part they don’t have any one single defining characteristic. This is why Isak himself is able to say ‘I’m an Outcast because I’m attracted to guys’ - because it’s not as defined as the others. Which makes it both easier to live with and harder in some ways. But all this will be explored in a bit more detail when we get Isak’s PoV.

I’m glad u asked!!! ofc because since I’m not an official author I’m not bound by any sorts of publishing constraints and can literally write the entire story in answer to this anon (but I won’t simply because I literally don’t know how it’s gonna go and also I’m looking over it and I don’t really like everything past chapter one that much but ANYWAY)

im not putting this under a read more bc my blog theme is annoying for those :(( so im just gonna tag as long post

as a lot of you probably know, since I’ve been talking about this for almost a year, the three eyed crow was originally planned to be a fantasy novel about three people (the term people is used loosely) and their adventure across america. as time went on and I actually sat down to write it, I realized several things:

the worldbuilding and driving force of the plot were very flimsy. two separate things, but because they were so intertwined and both lacking, they really failed to make an involving book. not only that, but

the entire story was cliche and part of the reason the plot was turning out so boring,

there was no real antagonist, and

this book would be very long if I wrote all of it out, and it would drag on and become a bore because it was full of overused storylines.

this was part of the reason I decided to make it into a webcomic. I could simplify the plot and actually use my ocs for fun, which was what i had intended prior to trying out a storyline for them.

so now, I’ll explain what the three eyed crow was before i completely trashed it, and go more in-depth as to why (in my eyes) it was bound to be a failure.

the three eyed crow started in the perspective of emirda (the perfect “absolute badass without prior or ‘on-screen’ training but also serving as the wise and all-knowing mentor to the main protagonist/supporting character” character trope), who was paying a visit of great importance to robin roth (the perfect “hero whose destiny is unrealized by themselves but known by everyone around them, helps if they are from a family of high social standing and have their own familial expectations to deal with apart from Saving The World” character trope) on behalf of the “death” (the only original part of this story) of favonius lim (the perfect “uninvested civilian casualty that gets swept into the plot through their connection with the main protagonist, becoming a vital link in the chain of the storyline and altering the outcome of the narrative dramatically through their presence” character trope).

there were already two things wrong with this beginning.

emirda is characterized to be an angel, with the religion in the narrative heavily using christianity as a crutch. the first problem with that was that even though I am technically christian, I know almost nothing about the religion. the only theological research I’d ever done on its behalf concerned not even the new testament but the old testament, which is used in judaism, and it was concerning homosexuality and the bible. anyway, not helpful in this context. I did some theological research concerning emirda’s supposed background, but gave up. because really, why had i favored christianity? it wasn’t as if I knew more about it as compared to other religions. so came the second step, and thus the second problem: creating a completely new religion. while this remains the better option, and most likely end result for this webcomic, creating a new religion meant a lot of worldbuilding, completely reworking emirda’s supernatural standing, and generating a lot of names. I wasn’t very ready for that, especially since my first try involved making the religion based heavily on christianity. again, what for? i don’t really know more about it.

a whole other problem unrelated to theology; the second problem concerned magic. robin’s profession in this world is a healer: robin is affiliated with the house of roth, and is the last living descendant of this powerful line of mages and the only possible inheritor of the House. but building a world with magic at its core gets boring if it isn’t original (admit it, we’re all tired of it after harry potter), and brings with it a lot of questions concerning the magical ability of all those who reside in within it. citing occupants of a magical society meant a lot of world-building in terms of possible careers, as well as questions regarding why society in that world functioned so similarly to our society. this in turn meant a lot more worldbuilding than I had been ready for. so, without the solid bedrock of explanations and tactful exposition, my flimsy assignment of robin as a mage and healer collapsed, making the story stale within the first two pages.

so officially, the story starts with emirda seeking robin out to confront her about something that she did. this in itself is problematic because we get almost no explanation about how emirda comes to find robin, and if it’s because emirda is related to and acting on behalf of a higher power, then why does emirda need robin to solve the following problem? but assuming we excuse that, as such comes the opening:

robin, working as a healer in her town (magic in worldbuilding problem, mentioned above), has meddled with things beyond her control, completely by accident. favonius, a farmer from a nearby village, committed suicide, and was rushed to robin’s infirmary in a last effort by his friends to save his life. robin, under judgemental watch by her elders, tried her best to save favonius while knowing it to be hopeless, and in doing so, accidentally brought him back to life. briefly. in the seconds she brought him back, she spliced his soul between the worlds of the living and the dead, and left it to wander the earth without giving it the possibility to return to its body or go “onward” (theology problem, mentioned above). this splice has caused a rift in the fabric of reality (worldbuilding problem, again), and emirda comes looking for robin to help track favonius’ soul down and restore it to hell (theology problem, again), thereby righting the wrong and going on an adventure in the process.

even with this opening act, there are already several more problems (aside from those pointed out in the parentheses). the first is favonius’ background. in early planning, favonius and robin were supposed to be very close friends prior to his death, while in the first draft they had almost no relation to one another. without a relationship, robin would have almost no motive to agree to come with emirda to search for favonius’ soul. in addition, we get almost no explanation as to why favonius committed suicide. or anything about his background at all, really. sure, we do end up finding out later, when he tells us about it himself, but if we’re centering the entire plot about finding one specific character, WE need a reason to be invested in him. we need to know more about him. we need a reason to care, and to find out why the other characters care so much about him, too.

robin does end up having a motive, and it’s part of the second problem. when emirda finds robin, robin is suffering in an abusive relationship with her elders, who have bound her by illegal contract to remain in service to the house of roth for the rest of her life, while legally those types of contracts and binding oaths are void as soon as the subject turns eighteen. robin is nineteen in the opening of the story, and her nerves are frayed after what happened with favonius and in regards to the contract by which she has been illegally bound for almost two years. hence, robin’s motive for leaving becomes not helping favonius and the universe, but helping herself. In my opinion, this is a very interesting motive, and something worth exploring within the webcomic, and maybe even one of the best things to come out of this first attempt, because it strays off of the beaten path of doing something for the good of the universe, but focuses on a main character driven by selfishness that is completely justifiable within the context of the story. it is something that puts each of this character’s actions under scrutiny, making you question why the character does everything that they do once the adventure begins. it also gives the character the option to change within the narrative (or not!) and alter their motive and perspective on the world. this in itself isn’t the problem; the second problem is not the motive but the villain. because robin is acting against the direct wishes of the elders of the house of roth, this writes the elders as the primary antagonists of this story, since throughout most of it robin and emirda spend it being pursued by agents of the house of roth. this puts almost no weight on the predicament in which favonius finds himself, and no importance on the outcome of finding favonius’ lost soul. this is bad because the inciting incident of the plot has no significant outcome; there is no longer a reason to be invested in the story. the only possible solution to this is make the reader now invested in the reason why robin is embarking on this quest, which is her wish to get away from the house of roth. but to do this is to shed more light on the horrors of the roth household, and for this there needs to be either flashbacks, good exposition, or a separate beginning to the story. aka rewriting.

now for the plot, and its problems. once emirda and robin do get out of the house of roth, physically breaking the contract, they now need to travel far and wide to search for favonius’ soul. the original plan for this was to have them first go to hell and ask lucifer (theology problem) about his knowledge and relationship to the soul of favonius (who was destined to go to hell upon death). now, hell needs to be a place, and the story was originally supposed to take place in america. so, where would hell be? of course, miami.

there are already three problems with this. the first problem is: if this story is happening in an alternate universe of the world, where each earthly resident is at least somewhat of a mage, why are hell, heaven (portland, oregon), and purgatory (somewhere in maine) all in america? there’s the rest of the world! where do dead russians go? portland? or is there a separate heaven for them? the geographic localization of the story made it, while fun, also impractical. kind of like jk rowling basing all of voldemort’s reign of terror around england. but more on jk rowling and worldbuilding to come. the second problem was, of course, history. if alternate universe america was still somewhat america, then it definitely had terrible things to account for, and a necessity for them to be explained. what rowling failed to do was contextualize world history with the ability to practice magic, hence perhaps unwisely ignoring terrible events in world history and generalizing cultures. we won’t go into that, but I was faced with a similar problem: how to contextualize just how badly america has been fucking up ever since it was declared an independent country, and even before then, and how this was affected by the presence of magic. I’m no historian, and I highly doubt that I could have done it well either way, because I am most definitely not the best person to write about that. this brought about the third problem: if the concept of alternate-universe america was being rightfully discarded, then jokes concerning the geography of theological locations had to be dumped as well, and a completely different world now had to be constructed, with its own inhabitant jokes that now needed to be explained to the readers. again, a lot more worldbuilding than i had originally planned for.

and so, once i realized these numerous flaws, progress on the three eyed crow ground to a halt. the age in which robin and favonius (emirda being timeless) reside is a strange amalgamation of modern and ancient (steampunk for those unwilling to admit it), which presented another hurdle in terms of time period placement. ANOTHER hurdle was the attempted love story between robin and emirda, which i severed even in the original version because of age difference and experience difference. there was a planned melancholy scene in an epilogue, which was set to occur fifty years after robin and emirda parted, when emirda left robin heartbroken to rebuild her life from scratch. i’d like to retell it, because it might be my favorite part out of the entire story, and something i’ll definitely keep in the webcomic.

fifty years have passed since emirda left robin standing on the bluff of a cliff overlooking the sea. robin is old now, nearing seventy, and a wizened old apothecary to which people from the town bring their sick children or themselves to be expertly treated. it’s a day like any other, and robin crosses the bridge over the river into the next town to go to the market to buy some fresh vegetables for home. at the market, she sees someone. someone in a dark cloak with a blob of pink hair and a third eye.

emirda.

robin, hobbling on old legs, chases them down. emirda turns at the sound of their name, and they’re shocked.

it’s been fifty years, and emirda has not changed. they’re timeless and eternal. they recognize robin, because of course they do, but it’s really been fifty years. for the first time in their existence, emirda recognizes the passage of time.

they walk home to the cottage together after robin has bought everything she needed at the market. across the bridge, through the woods to the bluff overlooking the sea.

on the bluff stands a solitary cottage, a windmill, and a small barn. robin keeps a cow, some chickens, sheep, and a single goat. emirda smiles at the goat.

robin invites emirda into the cottage. inside the cottage sits another wizened old woman, and robin smiles as emirda shakes her hand and the woman introduces herself as robin’s wife. emirda is treated to homemade soup and herbal tea.

in the evening, emirda and robin go out to stand on the edge of the bluff overlooking the sea. “it’s been fifty years,” says robin, as the wind carries her voice out across the water, “since I stood by your side.”
