hi!! proud owner of i think 5 atp jojo chibi charms and VERY new artist alley vendor here and i was just wondering, how do you budget/manage costs for non local cons that might have high transportation costs or more expensive tables? do you usually make back what you spent on transport + table/tickets + merch production/ordering + etc at the con or is there a slight loss? this is mainly for my own reference asking someone successful so ty for answering!!!

hey! congratulations on becoming an AA vendor :,) im very honored that you've bought from me before and that you consider me a 'successful' vendor haha!

i'm really passionate when it comes to talking about AA stuff so I'll be putting my answer in the read more since it's pretty long lol!

to be honest, I'm in a very lucky position to be able to travel to conventions beyond the east coast because it can really get expensive T_T i think the most honest answer i can give you is that your first couple of cons most likely are going to be a slight loss for you income wise if you are planning on traveling for a convention - tbh, i generally don't recommend doing a convention out of your state/out of your means if you're very new to tabling. my very first conventions were in driving/public transport distance (i love you new york and new jersey!!!) so i never spent money other than the table cost and ordering product. so if you're starting out and live in a state that has local cons, id HIGHLY recommend doing local events to get experience and cutting down costs as much as you can so you can get the most out of it! if you do intend on doing out-of-state cons because your state doesn't have many small local cons, i totally get it, but again, just try to keep your costs as low as possible. here are some suggestions and things to keep in mind:

1.split costs with a friend

split the table, split hotel fees, split ubers, etc! if you have family/friends in that state, consider crashing at their place for the weekend! maybe treat them to dinner haha

2. save up funds

honestly, there's really no getting around it - you might have to get income from somewhere else besides selling merch @ cons! i worked a part-time job throughout college, did commissions/freelance, and had my store open to save up for cons.

3. remember to deduct all expenses for your business

keep in mind that table fees/travel and hotel fees/products/meals are all deductible. these are considered investments for your business and they're completely necessary for you to run said business so when it comes tax time, you'll be able to breathe a little easier haha.

4. know your limits and be cautious

unfortunately, not all cons are going to be successful or will go your way no matter how much money you pour into it. if you know a convention is going to be out of your means, you can always apply the following year. I've had plenty of cons i couldn't go to because i simply couldn't afford it at the time, but the more money you save up, the more experience you get, and the more connections you make, you'll be able to afford to go and be successful! i'd also do plenty of research about the convention (especially the attendance #s, how previous vendors feel about the con, etc) before you decide to go. 5. have fun!

even though the upfront price can be intimidating, you are still paying the price to travel, visit a city you've never been to, meet new people, fans, your friends, and make connections! not to mention the really inspiring and motivating atmosphere that artist alley can be. i hope that regardless of the money you make you take the time to enjoy the experience to the fullest and appreciate that you are sharing your awesome art with others :,)! i try to make the best out of a con even if i barely make even, and make new friends and connections because trust me, they are so meaningful ^^<3!

uhhhhh that covid post!!

ok i do not have the energy to dig into that covid post bc overall the thesis wasnt clicking but that harry potter comparison was weird specifically barnes and noble part... actually all of it LOL like why did you even include that. anyway i do think we can absolutely exist in the space between people claiming 5000 people are dying from covid every week in the USA (not true!) and people claiming that any remaining info coming from tests (minimal!) is accurate when extrapolated to a population of 330million people.

atp we know masks help, we know vaccines help, we know clean air helps. just because someone’s sick doesn’t mean it’s covid but most people will never know because they are not ever testing. and i think if you’re the one with no mask coughing and sneezing all over the place it’s actually fine if i have negative thoughts towards you because why did you think it’s ok to get on public transport and get sneeze everywhere. people don’t even cover their mouths and noses when they cough that’s disgusting and gross and it does bother me a lot and that’s fine. (and it bothers me even more bc like so many times I’ll be out and about and people will see me in a mask and say “oh i should probably be wearing a mask”

ok mini rant over idk I’m tired and i just feel like … you can respond to misinformation without the “And also being angry that the health systems/authorities didn’t do enough is useless” … also i dont think covid is endemic. Yeah just googled it the WHO says its a pandemic but not a worldwide emergency anymore (as of last year) and the CDC is wishy washy on the exact wording (I’ve seen different health orgs in the us say ~we’re shifting out of the pandemic phase to endemic covid~ for like 2 years now). so that’s just like literally not true idk that post had a lot of graphs and did say some true things but overall not a good post imo. but hey it’s not my blog 🤷🏿 they can post whatever they want i guess 🤷🏿

kiara was born in a small apartment above a take out restaurant, but when she was 3 years old, her father gave her mother a large sum of money to basically absolve his parental responsibilty. they moved from their tiny apartment to a large house with an even larger yard and kiana was able to take part in any hobby, any skill, any trip she wanted to be apart of. at the time, it was a tough ajustment but they were better off without her bio dad and she was able to fully embrace her mother’s family, both by blood and by love.

spending her childhood and teen years running around a large astate, identifing butterflies and flowers and walsting around their local art gallery, imagining the history behind each piece (the real history be damned), kiara became close with her cousins and also the adults in her life. she seemed so mature and smart at such a young age. she was involved in environmental conservation, planting trees and removing local invasive species. kiara values nature and wants to keep her impact on the world on a positive note.

using the library computer, she looked her father up and found out that a) she had been born when he was still married to his ex-wfie, her mother’s now close friend and b) he had remarried and basically replaced her and her mother with a new little family. if she disliked him for his absent role in her life before, these feelings only hightened after seeing this online.

This is off topic but I get where you’re coming from about spreading info. I was big into the Glee/Monchele fandom before and after Cory died. Cory’s friends would always be yapping and you’d feel the need to set the record straight but that would come at the expense of Cory (who had already passed atp) and Lea’s privacy. It’s weird because you want to clear up stuff about your fave but it’s odd territory. I’m speaking on this now though because it’s been like ten years. Anyways I just wanted to say that I know how hard it is and I think you have handled it with grace!!

oh, thank you! there's just some things i don't want to spread. it can be public too but i don't like being the source of the spreading. i used to be years back, hell i'm pretty sure i was the one who spread that chad cheated in 2015 with a friend of theirs....... i did it in 2017 after he released a song that mentioned cheating and suddenly people would be on reddit telling others to come to my blog for the info. that wasn't public info and back then i didn't really think about it but it's not nice to do really.

it's also why i don't want to mention what baylie said in dms in detail about tayley. even though at least that comes from her and i have it and i guess it wouldn't matter but idk. the only things i've shared that she's said are things i actually never got to see so it could also not be true she said it and then just something very not detailed.

josh headcanons cuz yeah (these are gonna be all of them actually so anyone who cares abt my posts have prob seen these before)

multimedia artist; i think he mainly likes to use paints and charcoal, and if he's sketching he uses smudges and sharp fancy artist pencils

loves drones and cyborg related anything, especially if it's horror related, so like sci-fi horror (also is a sucker for slasher horror, i fink saw is his favorite probably)

he's got an engineer kinda streak to him. he loves making things and tampering with machinery (contrast to chris who loves tampering with electronics instead)

loves to write stories, but he keeps it hidden bc he thinks it's embarrassing

he doesn't game often, when he does though he enjoys castlevania and resident evil, and has played majority of the story games out there on playstation

he also likes survival horror in general when it comes to games. prob liked haunting ground

video essay enthusiast, josh is like that meme that's like "what happened to him" "he ate without youtube" like that's his vibe

can info dump about anything aquatic, loves the aquarium and his favorite sea creature is an isopod bc it looks so extraterrestrial

used to be into sports bc his dad would play baseball with him but i think that ended up dwindling over the years and josh lost all interest in sports by high school and thought it was lame

he was verryyyy dorky in high school which he tried keeping to himself but it didn't mesh well with others so josh opted to be like. the guy who everyone went to for parties and booze when he got to college

while he did study psychology i also think he was interested in other science or stem courses in general while there, but he didn't pursue it

in public he dresses in a way he hopes nobody even thinks about (just super casual and normal he's like a sim) but splurges on weird clothes he finds on cheap sites

both his parents worked and were hardly home, so josh had to learn to cook if him and his sisters ever wanted to have dinner

he had a lot of jobs while in college and high school; longest place he worked at was a cafe. he also took up working at the college library but hated it and quit

he steals a lot of hannah's accessories

is mildly interested in botany

knows ASL, has EDS, and used to do ballet with his sisters at a young age. they try to get him back into it but he firmly declines.

very autistic, specifically about horror movies and filmmaking in general. he always looks for the behind the scenes footage of all his favorite horror films, and particularly enjoys the FX process

also while i do hc all of this for him, josh is still the same douche bag we see in game. i just wanted him to have more interests besides just being the horror and films guy (which i do keep in his character while headcanoning all of this)

Cukrarna Gallery Ljubljana Building Design

Cukrarna is a former sugar refinery, built in 1828 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. During its’ two-hundred-year history, it was a sugar refinery, destroyed in a disastrous fire, and later a tobacco factory, a textile factory, a military barracks, and a homeless shelter.

It was also a temporary home for many poets and writers from Slovenia’s Modern period, which was key to establishing Slovenia as an independent nation. Due to its’ significance as a monument of 19th century industry, it has been listed as a protected building, and due to its rich history, it is firmly anchored in the Slovenian nations’ subconscious as a cultural symbol.

In 2009 the City municipality of Ljubljana organized an international competition to find the best proposal for the renovation of this national monument. Scapelab won the competition with the key idea to carve out all internal structures of the building, preserving only the historic envelope, and converting the building into a multi-functional space for contemporary art.

The ground floor is an extension of urban public space, accessible to all, free of charge. Upon entering, visitors are made aware of the gargantuan dimensions of the former factory. The gallery volumes, designed as »white cube« galleries, levitate above the ground floor, hanging from the steel roof structure. They are separated from the historic envelope by a visible gap, and are wrapped in perforated, sleek metal skin, contrasting the concrete walls of the historic envelope.

The perforated skin is an aesthetic device, visibly marking the new volumes – but also a functional element. It is an acoustic dampener, reducing reverberation, which makes it possible to hold concerts in the main hall; it is also a lighting fixture, and an HVAC distribution system.

The building has a newly excavated basement, which holds a dedicated space for performance art, lockers, technical spaces, and workshops for preparing exhibitions. The gallery bar is designed as a sound stage, becoming a jazz club and live music venue in the evening.

The gallery spaces are designed as “white cube” galleries of different proportions. In key positions, the gallery spaces are transparent, showing the visitors new perspectives of the interior space. Part of the gallery spaces is also dedicated as a space for education, lectures, and children’s workshops.

The New Cukrarna represents a revolutionary new space in the cultural infrastructure of the city of Ljubljana. It is an urbanistic attractor at the city center’s edge, regenerating a former derelict city area.

It builds its image and aesthetic upon its rich industrial heritage, working with simple materials, and using repetition as a metaphor of the industrial revolution. This industrial choice of materials and visual language is carefully reworked as a floating composition of volumes, drawing inspiration from the rich cultural history of the poets who once resided here, to provide a platform for artists of the future.
