The Guardian
June 15, 2023
Rich countries are signing a “death sentence” for millions of poor people around the world by failing to phase out fossil fuels, the climate activist Greta Thunberg has told governments. She warned on Tuesday that with annual greenhouse gas emissions at an all-time high, only a “rapid and equitable” phaseout of fossil fuels would keep global temperatures within the scientifically advised limit of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. “The coming months and years – right now – will be crucial to what the future looks like. It is what we decide now that will define the rest of humanity’s future,” she told a press conference at UN talks in Bonn, where governments are meeting to discuss the climate crisis. “If we do not [phase out fossil fuels], it will be a death sentence for countless people. It is already a death sentence for countless people,” she said. Thunberg last Friday announced the end of her school strikes, which she has been undertaking on Fridays since 2018 in protest at political inaction on the climate crisis. The campaigner has left school but intends to carry on speaking out on climate issues, while also giving the spotlight to youth voices from the developing world. She said a lack of political will to halt fossil fuel exploration and use was threatening to raise global temperatures by more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, which could lead the climate to pass “tipping points”, a cascade of impacts that could create runaway global heating. “We are still rushing towards the cliff. We could trigger feedback loops that are beyond human control, that would throw countless billions under the bus,” she said. The question of phasing out fossil fuels is expected to be a flashpoint at the Cop28 UN climate talks later this year. The summit will take place in Dubai, hosted by the United Arab Emirates, a major oil and gas producer. Many countries would like to see Cop28 produce a formal resolution to phase out fossil fuels, or at least to discuss such a phaseout as an official agenda item at the summit. But some countries, chiefly fossil fuel producers including Saudi Arabia, are staunchly opposed, and the UAE presidency has been cautious, saying there is not yet agreement on the agenda. Chairing the talks will be Sultan Al Jaber, a minister in the UAE government who is also chief of the country’s national oil company, Adnoc, which is planning a massive expansion of fossil fuel production capacity. Eric Njuguna, a climate justice organiser from Kenya, speaking with Thunberg, said Al Jaber’s dual role was a conflict of interest, and called on him to resign. “It is a stab in the back for poor countries to have a fossil fuel CEO on top of efforts to constrain the climate crisis,” he said. Al Jaber has told the Guardian he will bring a “business mindset” to the talks, and pointed to his role as co-founder of the Masdar renewable energy company in UAE. He visited the Bonn talks last Thursday, and told a public meeting: “The phase down of fossil fuels is inevitable.” But he stopped well short of promising to put a phaseout of fossil fuels on the Cop28 agenda. The talks in Bonn, which started last Monday and will end on Thursday, are to lay the groundwork for Cop28, the conference of the parties under the UN framework convention on climate change, which begins on 30 November. Progress at Bonn has been slow. Last week’s discussions were characterized by disputes over rich countries that are failing to provide financial assistance to developing countries, to help them cut their greenhouse gas emissions and cope with the impacts of the climate crisis. Alden Meyer, a senior associate at the thinktank E3G, said: “Much more work remains to be done to land an agreement at Cop28 for a just and equitable reduction of fossil fuel production and use in a time frame that’s consistent with the Paris [agreement] 1.5C goal.”

Cause and effects
I dug more into the causes and effects. This research helped me to get fresh ideas on designs and how I want to add meaning.
Causes
Generating power- Generating electricity and heat by burning fossil fuels, oil, or gas, produces a large number of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide - powerful greenhouse gases that blanket the Earth and trap the sun’s heat. Approximately 25% of the electricity produced worldwide is derived from renewable energy sources like wind and solar, which produce minimal to no greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution compared to fossil fuels.
Manufacturing goods- Manufacturing and industry produce emissions by burning fossil fuels to produce energy for making things like cement, iron, steel, electronics, plastics, clothes, and other goods. In addition to the construction sector, mining, and other industrial processes emit gases. These machines are often run on coal, oil, or gas, and some materials, like plastic, are made from chemicals sourced from fossil fuels.
Deforestation- When trees are cut down, the carbon they have been storing is released, which results in emissions when forests are cleared for farms, pastures, or other purposes. Roughly 12 million hectares of forest are lost annually. Destroying forests reduces nature's capacity to keep emissions out of the atmosphere because they absorb carbon dioxide. About 25% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions are caused by deforestation, agriculture, and other land-use changes.
Consuming too much- Greenhouse gas emissions are influenced by several factors, including your housing and power usage, mobility, food intake, and amount of waste disposed of. The use of products like plastics, electronics, and apparel also contributes to this. Private households are responsible for a significant portion of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. Our earth is greatly impacted by the way we live. The richest 1% of the world's population together produce more greenhouse gas emissions than the lowest 50%, indicating that the wealthiest have the greatest responsibility.
Effects
High temperatures- The global surface temperature rises alongside the concentrations of greenhouse gases. The warmest decade on record is the one from 2011 to 2020. Every decade since the 1980s has been warmer than the last. There are more hot days and heat waves in almost every land location. Elevated temperatures lead to a rise in heat-related ailments and complicate outdoor activity. In warmer weather, wildfires ignite more quickly and spread faster. The Arctic's temperature has increased at least twice as quickly as the world average.
Severe storms and increased drought- In many areas, destructive storms have increased in frequency and intensity. Increased evaporation of moisture due to rising temperatures exacerbates intense precipitation and flooding, leading to an increase in severe storms. The frequency and intensity of tropical storms are impacted by the warming ocean as well. Typhoons, hurricanes, and cyclones all feed on warm surface waters of the ocean. These storms frequently cause fatalities and significant financial damage by destroying houses and towns.  Due to climate change, the availability of water available in some regions is at risk. In areas that are already water-stressed, global warming makes water shortages worse. It also raises the possibility of agricultural and ecological droughts, harming crops and making ecosystems more vulnerable. As deserts spread, there is less area available for food production. These days, many people frequently face the risk of not having enough water.
Food supply- One of the biggest reasons behind the global rise of hunger and poor nutrients is climate change and increased extreme weather events. Livestock, crops, and fisheries might all be lost or become less productive. The marine resources that sustain billions of people are under threat due to the ocean's increasing acidity. Food sources from hunting, fishing, and herding have been interrupted in many Arctic regions due to changes in snow and ice cover. Reduced water and grasslands for grazing due to heat stress can harm livestock and crop output.
Health risks- Without a doubt, climate change has been one of the biggest threats to humans. Climate impacts affect heavily to health, through air pollution, diseases, extreme weather events, forced displacement, pressures on mental health, and increased hunger and poor nutrition in places where people cannot grow or find sufficient food. Approximately 13 million individuals lose their lives to environmental causes each year. Extreme weather events increase mortality and make it challenging for healthcare systems to keep up with the spread of diseases brought on by changing weather patterns.

BENEFITS OF DETERMINING YOUR BUSINESS'S CARBON FOOTPRINT
As a Carbon footprint consultancy, Concerns about climate change have recently dominated most discussions, leading to new habits among corporations and individuals. An analysis of the global impact of the increasing emphasis on healthy, ecologically friendly habits first considers the adverse effects of carbon foot printing. An individual, company, product, or event's yearly direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) and carbon dioxide emissions are represented by their "carbon footprint." Every product and action should be measured using the Carbon Emission Factor, a particular unit of measurement. The information gathered from all sources and activities during routine operations, transportation, and logistics gives a detailed picture of a company's carbon footprint. Its carbon footprint measures a product's complete process's emissions and volatile organic compounds.
Tumblr media
Being a Carbon footprint consultancy In UAE, this covers the production of raw materials, distribution, manufacturing, and product reuse/recycling up till disposal. Although not hazardous, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic substances that exhibit high vapor pressure at ambient temperature and raise long-term health concerns. The detrimental consequences of transportation gasses and electricity usage on the viability of goods and businesses may be well known to many. Experts recommend measuring the same elements from participants outside of the organization and from indirect consumers. The following data on the countries contributing to greenhouse emissions has been made public by the European Union. Determining a company's carbon footprint exposes how wasteful and inefficient it is. This could be advantageous to the expansion and growth of a business.
We as a Carbon footprint consultancy In Dubai, Companies must refrain from generating waste and operating at higher levels. Measuring carbon and greenhouse gas emissions has many benefits. A firm's value chain's carbon emissions can be measured to identify wasteful spending on operations and service components. A company's costs and expenses can be reduced by switching to alternative energy sources, identifying wasted resources, optimizing product distribution capacity, and tracking. As a result, they boost the profit margin. Customers choose which brands to be loyal to base on how well-managed the company is socially and environmentally. They'll even shell out more money. Carbon-neutral products are preferred by over 88% of consumers, according to Carbon Credit Capital.
In our opinion as Carbon footprint consultancy, Companies that follow regulatory bodies will ensure their goods and services are available on the open market. The public admires businesses that promote principles for improving people's lives. Naturally, these acts also affect the viewpoints of shareholders and employees. By capping carbon emissions from power, heat, oil, aviation, and other sources, the EU emissions trading system (EU-ETS) encourages the development of renewable energy sources. Most businesses currently gather data on energy bills, travel expenses, and material sources, which may be used to compute carbon footprints. The process is straightforward. This information is also easily accessible to suppliers regarding their costs.
We are renowned Carbon footprint consultancy In UAE, this is a chance to contribute to the long-term preservation and protection of the environment, enhancing the quality of life for all living things, including humans. A plan can be developed by examining the business's carbon footprint to expand its market, improve customer acquisition and retention rates, and cut down on wasteful spending. The first simple step toward sustainable development and more stringent standards for corporate performance is calculating carbon emissions. In addition to being priced competitively, carbon-neutral goods and services can also satisfy customers' expectations in terms of energy efficiency, recycling and paperless choices, and affordability.

Prestigitation and Thermodynamics Or: How rule lawyering might get me a super heated steel vapor projectile
This idea came to my mind when thinking about the prestigitation cantrip. One of its possible effects is the following: "You chill, warm or flavour up to one cubic foot of non living material for 1 hour"
Now, it is of course not specified by how much something can be warmed up. Upon inquring my dm about this, they said it should be a temperature at which you could consume food, because it stands in line with the flavoring effect, which we set at 60°C, due to tea being drinkable at that temperature. However one very important detail is, that I asked about how much thermal energy the spell can generate, and they said the thermal energy to heat water up to those 60°C, which is a very different statement than flat out heating water to 60°C.
Now this is where my background in mechanical engineering, which includes a course on thermodynamics and heat transfer comes into play with the following equation: Q = m*c*ΔT Or meaning Thermal energy = Mass * Heat capacity * Temperature Difference between 2 states. A cubic feet of water weighs around 29,3 kg The heat capacity of water, meaning how much energy you have to put in it to heat it up, is 4,2kJ/kgK (kilo Joules per Kilogram and Kelvin) And the difference between room temperature and 60°C is 35°C, which means, under the previous assumptions, that the maximum energy provided by the spell is 4160kJ, which is all I have talked to my dm about and they are already worried what I have planned. Now the heat capacity is of water, is incredibly high, according to my knowledge that's due to what I shall roughly translate as "hydrogen bridge bonds" but I am sure a chemist can tell you more about why exactly that is. The heat capacity of steel, in comparison is only about 0,45 and I am free to use less of it then fits in a cubic feet, so I could take 1kg of it. Therefore I have almost 30 times less mass, with a heat capacity 10 times lower. If I redo the equation with the given parameter I get 4160kJ = 1kg*0,45kg/kJK*ΔT Solve for ΔT and I get around ΔT=9200°C 9200°C This I assume is enough to vaporize steel.I should note here that "steel" is a name given to many different alloys of iron, carbon and other compounds, give the Temperature however I don't think it matters to much. Now you might think that this Temperature is way too high, given that you also just boil a bunch of water with it, which is true. This equation functions without loosing heat to the enviornment in the form of convection or radiation or anything else, it also does not take into account, that changing a materals phase, i.e. go from solid to liquid, or liquid to gas, takes energy without changing the temperature, however I still think that, assuming the energy is delivered in an instant you can still heat up to at least a very hot liquid, especially considering you can have 3 prestigitation effects active at a time, so you could just deliever 12480kJ of Energy to the steel. You could also pick an even smaller ammount of steel, which would raise the temperature even higher or pick a material with a lower heat capactiy like copper, which has the added benefit of being better defined than an alloy like steel. Steel however was the first thing that came to my mind which is why I have picked it for this example. So you could have one caster levitate a block of material in the air and another superheat it and then fling it into the faces of your unsuspecting enemies, or turn a locking mechanism into gas, or lot's of ther things that I am sure you will be able to imagine. As I previously said my dm is only aware of the first few parts of this nonsense and I hope they won't see it as to keep it a suprise. I don't think they will allow me to fling superheated steel at my enemies but I will try my best to make the case for this.

Inverter AC Vs. Non-Inverter AC - Which One To Buy
Now that summer has arrived, more people are turning to buy new air conditioners. If you haven't done so yet, you may learn exactly what an inverter and non-inverter air conditioner are by reading this article. When India's heat becomes intolerable, you will need to get an air conditioner for your own comfort. You might consider an inverter air conditioner if you don't currently have one and are planning to get one.
Tumblr media
What Are Inverter AC?
As a current and frequency controller in AC, inverter technology functions as an electric voltage controller. By increasing or reducing the power supply to the compressor, inverter technology AC regulates heating or cooling. This enables the inverter AC to control the cooling effect perfectly and save energy.
What Are Non-Inverter ACs?
To change the temperature on non-inverter air conditioners, you can simply switch the compressor on or off. The non-inverter AC has predetermined cooling capacity, so it can turn the compressor on or off based on the weather outside.
Inverter Vs. Non-Inverter Technology
The main distinction between these air conditioners is how the compressor is used to produce cooling and heating. Non-inverter ACs can only run at a specific capacity, whereas inverter AC windows have the option of adjusting their operational capacity. They are unable to manage the compressor in order to modify the AC's cooling or heating capability.
According to studies, a 1.5-ton AC with an inverter can run between 0.3 and 1.5 tonnes, however a 1.5 AC without an inverter will always run at 1.5 tonnes. Top DifferencesInverter ACNon-Inverter ACCostHighLowEnergy-efficiencyMore energy-efficientLess energy-efficientTechnologyInverter technologyNon-Inverter technologyNoiseMore quitterLess quitterOperationFlexibleLess Flexible
Inverter AC Can Protect Compressor From Power Fluctuations
The fundamental benefit of inverter ACs over conventional ACs, aside from all other benefits, is their ability to maintain a constant interior temperature. The temperature can change depending on the ambient temperature in any non-inverter AC model. While a non-inverter AC can raise or lower the temperature by 1 or 2 degrees, if you set the inverter AC temperature to 24 degrees, the AC will retain that temperature till the operation continues.
Inverters Are Less Harmful To The Climate
Modern inverter air conditioners employ R32 environmentally friendly refrigerant gas, which not only offers superior cooling but also emits fewer climatically detrimental pollutants. The calibre and volume of the cooling gas used also affect the cost of the inverter for air conditioning.
Inverter ACs Are More Expensive But Energy Efficient Too
AC ones without inverters are typically more expensive. As a result of its ability to operate at both high and low capacities as needed, its overall operating costs are reduced over time. When the compressor is turned off in an AC model without an inverter, the system resumes. However, it's possible that turning the compressor off will use more energy than it does to turn it on.
Why Are Inverter AC Models Long-Lasting?
Any AC model can last for at least a few years when it is maintained on time. However, due to the best quality compressors in Inverter AC split being more durable and can last longer than any non-inverter AC units.
Reason Why Inverter ACs Show Less Performance Than Non-Inverter ACs
In comparison to non-inverter AC units, inverter AC units operate with hardly any noise. Modern, intelligent inverter air conditioners also feature a smart sleep mode that reduces electricity use. Therefore, although the cost of an inverter air conditioner may be slightly more than that of a non-inverter air conditioner, it can reduce utility costs in part.
Why Inverter AC needs Less Maintenance?
The advantages of inverter AC units over conventional AC types are numerous. However, due to its limited capacity to adapt, inverter air conditioners might have substantial maintenance costs. During prolonged operation, the compressor is put under less stress thanks to the intelligent heat adaption and flexible cooling, which also help preserve cooling gas.

What Is a EER Rating for HVAC Systems?
Tumblr media
EER, or Energy Efficiency Ratio, measures the energy efficiency of an air conditioner or heat pump. To do this, manufacturers test the unit at the outdoor cooling temperature of 95°F and then give an EER rating, typically somewhere between 11 and 14 EER. A higher EER rating means your air conditioner is more energy efficient — and that’s a good thing! An energy-efficient AC will save you money on your utility bills and leave a small carbon footprint in the process.
What is EER?
Like we mentioned earlier, EER is the energy efficiency of your air conditioner. EER ratings are always calculated with the AC unit working at an outdoor temperature of 95°F, an indoor temperature of 80°F, and at 50% humidity.
Simply put, EER represents the cooling capacity of an air conditioning system. To calculate the EER of an air conditioner, you need to divide the cooling output by the total energy usage. The cooling output is expressed in British Thermal Units, or BTUs, whereas the power consumption is expressed in watts.
So, for instance, if you have a 10,000 BTU air conditioner that consumes 1,200 Watts, the EER of the air conditioner is: 10,000 / 1,200 = 8.3 EER
How Is EER Different from SEER?
The seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) represents the energy efficiency of a cooling unit. Unlike EER, which is determined in a laboratory setting that simulates an indoor and outdoor environment, SEER represents the average EER over various outdoor temperatures, ranging from 65° to 104°F. To determine the SEER, you need to divide the cooling output for an average season by the total electrical consumption during that season. That’s why SEER is considered as an indicator of the average energy-efficiency rating of the cooling unit to understand its performance during a season.
When Does Understanding EER Matter?
While understanding EER is important for all AC unit owners to get the full picture of their unit’s efficiency, understanding EER is especially important if you live in the Southern United States or a state like Arizona or Florida, where high, humid temperatures are the norm.
EER ratings are typically more important for those living in the Southern U.S. because EER is calculated by using one temperature — 95°F. In the South, it’s pretty standard for summer days to reach and exceed this high temperature, so EER is crucial in understanding how your air conditioner will hold up during hot days. In the North, such high temperatures aren’t as common, so a rating of how energy efficient your AC unit is at this high degree isn’t going to be too useful for you.
What’s a Good EER Rating for a Mini Split Air Conditioner?
According to the Department of Energy, minimum EER ratings for air conditioners range anywhere from 11.7 to 12.2 in the South, depending on tonnage. But, these are just minimums and if your unit is significantly better than those government-mandated numbers, it will earn an ENERGY STAR-certified EER rating.
ENERGY STAR-rated units come with many benefits for homeowners: they indicate your unit has an excellent EER rating, is made with better materials, and has a significantly less harsh impact on the environment. ENERGY STAR rated air conditioners must have EERs of 12 for split-system air conditioners and 11.5 for packaged air conditioners. Starting Jan.1, 2022, these ENERGY STAR minimums will be raised to 12.5 for split system air conditioners and 12 for packaged air conditioners.

The impact of solid concrete blocks on the construction industry
Introduction
Concrete blocks are increasingly being used in buildings, taking the place of bricks.
Let’s explore the causes of this shift.
Load-bearing masonry walls, columns, and footings are typically built using solid concrete blocks.
Because of their various advantages and the fact that they bear predominantly compressive loads, these load-bearing structures are the preferred option for high-raised buildings.
Let’s start by defining quality in the context of concrete blocks.
Compressive strength and water resistance are two of the main quality indicators used to assess concrete block quality.
These two standards for quality are easily met by top concrete blocks.
Compressive power
The capacity of a material or structure to support loads on its surface without cracking or deflection is known as compressive strength. A material’s size tends to diminish under compression, but it elongates under tension. The cube test, also referred to as the concrete test, provides data on all of the characteristics of concrete. Concrete’s compressive strength for normal construction ranges from 15 Mega Pascal (2200 pounds per square inch) to 30 Mega Pascal (4400 pounds per square inch), with higher values for significantly raised commercial and industrial structures.
Water resistance.
The ability to resist water is the second characteristic of concrete blocks. Blocks made of concrete are relatively water-resistant. How can I check this?
3 concrete blocks should be submerged in fresh, room-temperature water for 24 hours. After that, the blocks must be removed from the water and placed on a coarser wire mesh so they can drain.
Once the surplus water has evaporated, weigh each one separately. The blocks must be dried in a vented oven after being weighed for at least 24 hours and until two subsequent weighings are performed at intervals of 2 hours and indicate an incremental weight loss of no more than 0.2%.
Other advantages of concrete blocks
Concrete surfaces are effective noise barriers because they can both reflect and absorb sound waves.
Because concrete has natural components that make it robust and able to withstand the test of time, like the majority of concrete-made structures, and because concrete tends to get stronger over time, concrete blocks make excellent building materials, security barriers, and block walls.
Moreover, concrete blocks are quite excellent in absorbing and storing heat due to their great thermal mass. Whereas a wooden construction will succumb to flames fast, a concrete block building can withstand them and slow the spread of fire. To protect the safety and integrity of your project, all our concrete blocks at SD Conmix are fire-resistant, boasting a fire safety grade of A1, the very highest rating available.
Environmentally friendly options can have a high cost. Since they enable quick construction on every project, concrete blocks are still reasonably priced. This saves time and money on all types of projects.
Concrete blocks can assist in keeping a building warm in the winter and cool in the summer when they are properly designed and built. This makes it feasible for the structure to attain the highest levels of long-term energy efficiency while also improving its overall sustainability and low operating costs.
Conclusion
To sum up, the features of concrete blocks have revolutionized the construction industry. Concrete blocks thus are best suited for construction and are the best choice for high-raised buildings. If you are looking for the best concrete blocks, the manufacturer that you can trust is SD Conmix.

5 EASY AIR CONDITIONER MAINTENANCE TIPS
5 EASY AIR CONDITIONER MAINTENANCE TIPS Few household tasks are more profitable than planning routine air conditioner maintenance. A well-maintained air conditioner operates effectively, consumes less energy, and is less expensive. A system with regular maintenance experiences fewer failures and lasts longer. What You Should Know About Maintaining an Air Conditioner? You can do some common air conditioner maintenance procedures as a homeowner. But, you ought to leave technical evaluations and repairs to duly qualified, certified experts. Never hesitate to consult an expert if you feel uneasy executing any of the tasks on the list below. 1. Check the thermostat It might be the simplest chore for maintaining an air conditioner. Simply verify that your thermostat is operational and maintains the optimum temperature in your house. Consider replacing your mechanical, older thermostat with a smart, programmed device like the Gold 824 smart thermostat from American Standard HVAC. When no one is home, a smart thermostat lets you raise the temperature; it doesn’t turn the air conditioner off; it merely raises the temperature. And around 30 minutes before people get home for the evening, it may chill the place down. 2.Change or clean your air filters One of the most crucial tasks in maintaining your air conditioner is changing the filter. Do it once throughout the fall and spring and once during the summer and winter high-use seasons. The airflow reduces when the filter fills with dust, grime, and allergy particles. Your system has to work harder than necessary as a result. Also, as the air passing through your system gets dirtier and dustier, it can affect the quality of the air within your house and aggravate allergy and asthma problems in occupants. 3.Refresh the outside unit The capacity and airflow of the system diminish when leaves, dirt, and grass clippings accumulate outside the air conditioner unit over time. It also highlights how crucial it is to maintain the outer unit. Turn off the unit’s power first. You may do that at the service disconnect on your outside unit or at the main breaker panel in your house. The material should then be carefully washed away using a garden hose. Work your way down, starting at the top with the hose at a 45-degree angle. Use a power washer sparingly, or you risk damaging the appliance. Also, be careful not to damage or bend the coil’s fragile fins. 4.Check the components and wiring The internal connections of your air conditioner are essential to its performance. Checking the wiring of the outdoor unit at least once a year is crucial since what you don’t know about them might cost you money in the form of ineffective cooling. Remove the condenser unit’s access panel and check for overheating while the power is off. For instance, this can involve cables with melted insulation or wires that seem charred or blackened. Moreover, ensure sure all electrical connections are tight by checking them. You may examine the capacitors in the device if you have an electrical test metre. Call a local heating and cooling specialist to handle any issues you find if you don’t feel confident fixing them yourself. 5.Check the fan in the condenser unit If the fan blades on the condenser unit are damaged, your air conditioner won’t be able to effectively chill your house. Knowing their state is crucial for this reason. To do this, switch off your air conditioner and inspect the condition of the fan that is installed on top of the outside condenser unit. Replace the fan blades if one or more blades have any obvious cracks or chips. Online retailers like Amazon and air conditioner supply websites sell fan blades.
