22 seconds of John Lennon pining over Paul Mccartney | February 9, 1964
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paul walks pass, John is looking at him, Paul does not even look back. John whistles while looking back at Paul walking away, a forlorn look in his eyes, licks and bites his lip, physically stopping himself from saying anything and holding back his feelings. ALL WHILE I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND IS PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND (doesn't get any funnier/sadder). Actually it does, because George and Ringo obviously tries to distract the cameras and mask this exchange.
It was said by some that there was a lot of tension during this February trip to America, Cynthia joined them after their Paris trip.
This pining incident took place the same month John Lennon wrote the lyrics to the song "If I Fell" on a Valentines Card given to Paul Mccartney "on the airplane". It must've been their flight from New York to Miami on February 13 1964 or their flight on February 21 from Miami to New York to London. They recorded "If I Fell" in London on February 27, 1964.

"If I Fell"; Fixing a Tie; Blowing the Lyrics
I don't think I ever realized that Paul was straightening John's tie as they were beginning to sing "If I Fell," which just makes me love it even more. But a couple of things to appreciate: 1) George looks like he's just WAITING for a screw up because John and Paul are clearly distracted. 2) George smiles as the moment he was waiting for happens, and John and Paul go tentative on the second verse, where it sounds like John is going to sing "give my heart" once more and Paul is sort-maybe-going-to-land-on "giii-trust in you." 3) Harrison's smile is PRICELESS

I dont think I've ever heard the take that girl seems to be about Paul, I mean, it makes sense absolutely, but can you expand some more?
Gladly, Anon.
Rob Sheffield (Dreaming the Beatles) said he thinks Girl is about Paul in this episode of @anotherkindofmindpod. The episode is actually an in-depth discussion of In My Life, but Girl came up a number of times, since it's also on Rubber Soul.
I thought Sheffield's statement was interesting, and not in a silly “John saw Paul as a girl” kind of way.
Summarizing mercilessly, and taking a few steps back before returning to Girl:
RS argues that Rubber Soul marks a moment when the Beatles’ songwriting moved from a commercial/craft perspective towards a more open/confessional/personal tone, In My Life being an example of this, with John examining his feelings for all his friends and lovers, and singling out a new kind of love that transcends the loves he’s known before. According to RS and the hosts, In My Life is not only addressed to Paul (I personally feel it could also be about Julian, or about both; as someone who writes, I really feel the “a piece of art is never about just one thing” argument)— it also, by summoning a group of dear people and openly expressing his feelings for them, emulates Paul, who, in John’s eyes, is the more extrovert and socially comfortable of the two. The song is a two-fold tribute.
Girl, still according to RS, forms a matched pair with In My Life, because it, too, concerns complex and intimate emotions; in this case being unsettled by a complex, alluring and confusing person (Paul/the girl). It's a non-generic, specific, highly personal song you wouldn't have found on earlier albums. (You Won’t See Me is Paul’s reply to John.)
Whether you agree with these interpretations or not (by the way, instead of trusting my summary, it’s probably a better idea to listen to RS and the hosts in their own words), I’m happy to see the acknowledgment of the depth of John and Paul's relationship.
RS also makes a beautiful point about If I Fell (which, as we know, John saw as a continuation of In My Life): That John and Paul, as always, tell the truth about each other by the way they sing together.
(Cue the If I Fell/marriage vows quote from Gould’s Beatles bio).
Ian Leslie (no introduction needed) was more direct in his “Hidden Gems” episode on @onesweetdreampodcast. He stated he believes that If I Fell was written for Paul, commemorating their Paris ‘honeymoon’.
And look—people are free to go as far as they want in how they interpret all this, but I personally feel it liberates and elevates the discussion of their songwriting and relationships to include the romantic love or friendship or X or [redacted] or 'tender and tempestuous' but ‘not sexual as far as we know’ relationship between John and Paul as one of its many possible inspirations.
It just feels silly to me to ignore it or act all offended at the mere suggestion.
And when RS writes in Dreaming the Beatles “For John, Paul was the boy who came to stay; for Paul, John was the song he couldn’t make better,” it just feels right.
My two cents.
P.S. When I'm inclined to accept that Girl is about Paul, I immediately want to ask follow-up questions. Because this is a song about a fraught relationship, right? In what sense did John try to leave Paul? In what sense did Paul promise him the earth and cry? I know it doesn't have to be literally true, but some extrapolation, please? This didn't happen in the episode—obviously, since its focus was another song, In My Life. PPS: I wrote this in a bit of a hurry so feel free to get back to me for clarifications, etc.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney record 15 takes of "If I Fell" into the same microphone.
Jeez EMI, spend a little money why don't you?

Was “If I fell” a song dedicated to Paul?
Tumblr media
I think this song was for Paul, but unfortunately he didn’t respond like John wanted 😭. John felt like a fool. I think what made John feel good was the fact that he at least “said” something, even when Paul was being a prick 😭. I think Paul, probably without “noticing” the song, later was more affectionate with John. And John was like “what kind of game is this one playing?” 😭😭😭
About “Now And Then”
Anon asked me If this song was dedicated to Paul, but when I first asked this question, the cards decided to tell me the context behind the song.
So what I did, after understanding the context, was asking about any of the candidates. I asked about May, Yoko, and Paul.
I hope you like this one. I did! Even If it was kind of sad in the beginning.
The context behind Now and Then
Tumblr media
The cards start telling me about the song: the song is part of a reflection from the current feelings and the past, the want to do something about it, but also the contradictory feeling of “maybe it’s just me romanticising the past. Maybe it wasn’t that good”. Even when feeling like that it was evident that John wanted to reach someone, even when this feeling was torturing him, feeling like mad: it was a mix of hating it, desiring it, wanting to know the truth of it. But he felt that he already left that relationship a long ago, it was like there was nothing else to do. He would thought about what would’ve happened if he gave more, what would’ve happened if they put the things in “their right place”. He thought how happy they would’ve been. He thought about what he left. Also, he tried to watch his past with more impartial lenses, but he knew he was fooling himself. I think in this moment he felt HUGE regret. “Why did I do all of that?”. It was like all he did was for nothing. He tried to have some pride, but the truth was, that having the chance, he would go without any hesitation towards that old relationship.
The “candidates”
Tumblr media
May - the cards start telling me about the end of his relationship with her, that it was kind of abrupt, and that he would probably felt defeated, because it was like she didn’t do anything for him? Also, for him was more important what he had before, so he worked for that, even when it may him feel bad. But he didn’t do anything about it and she kept going on with her life
Yoko - it talks about how he persued her, but how impulsive that move was. It was like he enjoyed the minutes of it happening, thinking it was right. When they were together, he had a sense of stability, and pride that left him “happy”, but deep inside he knew it was bullshit.
Paul - it talks about how John wanted to reach Paul but regretted immediately. It was like that boat sailed a long ago. But it was very difficult to still have those feelings, it was very confusing too. It was like why I’m like this even when my heart is broken. John tried very hard to make it seem like he was very happy, but knowing that he “lost” Paul was almost unbearable. He needed a way to do something, and it took him a lot of time. He did something (I think it’s the song) but he never gave it to him. He felt good because he did it, but also, not very satisfied.
So for me, the answer for this question is that this song was definitely for Paul.

If I fell in love with you, would you promise to be true? And help me understand? 'Cause I've been in love before and I found that love was more than just holding hands...

Something so fragile, vulnerable about If I Fell. Not immediately open, sheltered. Unsure. Testing the waters. But then ignoring all subtlety, all your emotions pouring out in a frustrated way, just so they reach the point. Can't afford to walk on eggshells anymore. I offer you my love, take it or leave it, but only if you can be serious about it.
