PLEASE can we see some of your HC designs? (Also yay, finally gained the confidence to turn off anon lmao)
I don't think you're aware of how mentally ill I am about soldier, and when I see that you've posted something new about him MY GOD I'm feral.
(This is to say I think you're great and you feed my delusions about a 40-something year old man fantastically well)
TF2 Headcanon designs, part 1/4
part 2
I HAVE THEIR EYES !!! which i think mostly encapsulates them pretty well. i also have quite a few doodles
here's the most complete ref i've made of them
Tumblr media
their eye color, skin tone, nose shape, and favorite colors!
i'll do the rest of my hcs in order. i usually try to stay close to what i see in canon visually, my hcs are more background and personality-driven. but there are some differences here and there!! starting with scout below the cut:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(ft. spy)
he and spy have a very similar face and nose shape, as i'm sure you'll notice in the third image. they also have a similar eye color, with scout's being a little paler. i've decided his full name is Jeremy Valentine, because of course it would be. he's fairly tan, not only because of his ethnicity but because he's out in the sun a lot. he's trans FtM and his parents are fully supportive of him with very little fuss coming from either side. though, spy was more keen to treat him the same, just with a different name.
next is soldier!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
obviously, this is the merc i have the most examples of :3
starting right off the bat i draw his hair longer than it's kind of supposed to be. i know a lot of people say and think that soldier is very strict on his self-care, and while i do think that is true, i think it can coexist with his adhd and his inability to remember things a lot of the time. oh btw he's audhd lmao
he's mixed race latino/white, his mom being mexican and his dad being from all over europe. he had a sister that passed young. he doesn't remember his family, or his real name (legally his name is Thomas Anthony Mason. he's on file at Mann Co. as Jane Jamison Doe). he knew he was trans at a very early age, before his sister was born, and his father in particular was very elated to hear he would have a son to join the military. said father was unattentive and clumsy, and his mother was a little on the manic emotional side. his sister, named Betty-Ruth (but she would scowl at you if you called her anything other than Ruthie) was a very kind and patient little girl. the two used to get along great, before the incident that permanently changed soldier's life course. being he was kicked in the head by a war horse at an independence day reenactment. L bozo.
also he's deathly scared of clowns, so the team has him convinced they're not real. pyro likes to tease him about it
ALRIGHT! next up is pyro! i'll have to do it in another post because tumblr mobile is HOMOPHOBIC so stay tuned for that

Alright, I’ve watched the full playthrough several times now and I’m almost positive: Soap is biracial.
Listen. Look.
Tumblr media
This is him in diffused but still relatively direct lighting (and color corrected for brightness by the gif maker if I’m not mistaken).
Compare to Alejandro in the same scene.
Tumblr media
Whereas, Price…
Tumblr media
Slightly different lighting situation, more direct and warmer, but still—he is clearly paler and redder than Soap.
Take a gander next at Neil Ellice, who did full performance capture and provided facial reference for Soap’s model.
Tumblr media
I have seen no whiter man in my life.
Further support for my theory: Soap picks up Spanish AWFULLY fast for a Scot. I’ve lived around Spanish my whole life, and I can kind of get the gist very generally when someone speaks it, but I can’t speak it myself yet. But Soap? Boy’s responding to Rudy in Spanish no more than four days after landing in Las Almas. That’s not even mentioning how well and how quickly he warms up to Alejandro or Rudy, or how curious he clearly is about their background growing up in Las Almas.
There’s something to be said, of course, for Soap’s intelligence—one assumes John Price doesn’t recruit total meatheads. It could simply be that Soap has a talent for languages amongst his many other skills. But I’m not convinced he’s merely a very tan white man with a knack for Spanish, and also? I just prefer a mw2 in which Soap is visiting Mexico as the diasporic child of an emigrated, mixed family. It’s more interesting, and what’s more it’s so rare to see any Latino man in media be the kind, compassionate hero you’re meant to root for.

Also kind of just thinking about how the show makes Magnus very racially ambiguous & the men he‘s supposedly based off of visually (Tom Araya & Serj Tankian) have somewhat complex answers to “are they white” (a much bigger and more complicated question and conversation that I myself am equipped to have), and this may be the case with Magnus himself as well.
(My personal headcanon is that he’s very mixed, being of Armenian & Latino heritage primarily, specifically Chilean/Bolivian and with Indigenous (Aymara) roots. I think is a fairly popular fanon that he’s not white, and it’s somewhat alluded to within the show with his appearance. But I digress)
But I guess this is all to say that it makes the conversation around him and stereotypes a bit more complex, and also the conversation about fans drawing him very pale. In the show, there are scenes from the past where he’s clearly shown to be very light, and then later on his palette is clearly a man with darker skin. Obviously there’s the possibility that he’s just very light because hasn’t been outside much, or the lighting is just bad. People in real life can grow paler and darker depending on the season. But I guess I still personally feel mildly weird when he’s drawn so pale. But again, not much to say on that and you can’t really say it’s white-washing properly, since he’s pretty darn ambiguous during the course of the entire show and is shown to be very light sometimes. Also obviously people of color with light skin. Exist. Its just Hm.
If other nonwhite fans have thoughts I’d love to hear ur opinions

Hello! I know this is a weird question and I’ve asked another blog but in trying to get opinions from people and from their followers. Feel free not to post but I’m having a bit of an identity crisis. I identify as both Hispanic and Latino becusee of both halves of my family. I identify as racially white (as far as I know that’s it but I have recently discovered infeideltiy in my family so it’s messy). I recently saw a man post a video about how he doesn’t identify as a POC because he is white Latino. I don’t want to identify as a POC if I’m not one. But when I did more research and BIPOC came up it listed the Latino community in addition to Black, Asian, and Indigenous so now I’m a little confused. I’ve never felt “white” but I do know I have privilege for being lighter skinned even if I’m not totally pale. I know a lot of white Latinos/Hispanics feel the same way about not feeling “white” even though we racially are.
woah! i’m gonna post some definitions on here before i get into your question. i think it’s a good conversation to have, and a better one to see to enrich yourself. brief reminder: i’m a first-gen filipino in america, so i’m not an authority over this in any way. >>> feel free to correct me or add on!
Hispanic: ‘native speakers of Spanish, or have Spanish-speaking ancestry.’ you can almost use this to describe any person who’s upbringing includes speaking spanish
Latino (Latina/Latinx): ‘[specifically] of Latin American origin or descent, especially one who lives in the United States.’ more about where you or your family is from geographically. ((created cos ‘hispanic’ excludes brazil b/c of Portuguese. which is still a romantic language, which stems from latin))
BIPOC: “black, Indigenous and people of color.” word created to EMPHASIZE black and indigenous people by name, apart from ‘POC’. i think this word has gained more recognition due to..... recent events.
literally please correct me if i’m wrong or overstepping >> to me, it sounds like you are Hispanic, Latino, and white-passing. There is definitely a privilege to ‘looking white,’ having ‘Eurocentric features’ or just being ‘paler-skinned’ in general,,, but that doesn’t mean You Are White (or should be inclined to ‘identify’ as white). I’m totally viewing this through an American Lens, but I understand your conflict, as you may not personally feel the affects of racism, favoritism, or any kind of bias because of external factors (??)
i would view it like this though: if your family (parents, siblings, cousins, etc) are not as pale as you, speak spanish in ‘public spaces’, or have an ‘unfamiliar’ given name and are treated differently because of it... are they POC while you aren’t?
i definitely feel like identity is fluid and that the world is changing, but i personally base a lot my identity to my upbringing and my parents. like, on my own, i don’t ‘feel’ filipino, and i don’t even think that ‘filipino’ would come up as an adjective for myself if someone asked–– but when it comes down to How The World Views Me, i am filipino. I am brown, no matter how pale i get. i am a POC no matter what benefits me and doesn’t,,, the world hasn’t progressed enough for Just Being, unfortunately.
but maybe it is different for hispanic and/or latino people? Those terms can be used broadly, and where you grow up definitely factors into this feeling, as well as what you look like. it’s kind of funny how identifying yourself is something that is somehow very personal but external at the same time.....
so! i’m not sure if i have any other answer or insight for you. i think it’s good idea to open up for conversation and research, and speak to variety of different people with different experiences. your self-worth is not weighed in how you racially identify, nor is it a necessity to be hyper-specific. just keep learning ~

Alastor’s monocle (and other tidbits) has led me down a path of musing about his heritage
[EDIT: THIS HAS IMMEDIATELY BEEN MOSTLY DEBUNKED, BUT I’LL LEAVE IT UP ANYWAY. Parts that aren’t debunked --and thus floatable headcanons--will be bolded.]
(I should preface this with the fact I’m an irreligious whitey-white-white that only has a passing, beginner-level understanding of Haitian vodoun and voodoo, and admittedly very little knowledge of Creole history--Metis are more my speed because I live in Wisconsin. What I’m about to talk about is conjecture based on non-exhaustive skimming of a few articles on the topic and IRL conversations from a professor who is 100% Louisiana Creole. Also note I’ll try really hard not to impose out-of-state racial binaries on Louisiana since Louisiana had its own system. I’m not trying to dictate culture or anything, just putting down my thoughts).
-----
Considering the fact that Alastor has a monocle, I wonder if he was not part of the upper echelons of New Orleanian society (spoiler: this post is going to argue he was), since only the wealthy could afford a well-fit, functional monocle. Normal people got bifocals or glasses because why the fuck would you waste time with a one-eyed lens..
That is, assuming that the monocle was something he wore regularly in his day-to-day life. Considering he died in 1933, it would stick out a bit because the “fashionability” of it had died down by the early 20s. So not only was he oddly dapper, he was dapper in a way that was considered comical and antiquated by contemporary standards by the time he died.
The ability for him to afford a monocle, and his special abilities, likely tie in together, oddly enough!
----------------------------------
Switching gears real quick: His powers incorporate the symbols of Louisiana Voodoo which black slaves managed to preserve quite well in some parts of the French-controlled region. Freed blacks continued the practices and built up their communities. A portion of the black and white communities intermarried, further galvanizing Sub-Saharan African traditions and languages with the white French Catholicism and French language. Add some Native or Spanish in there, and you got Louisiana Creole (obviously simplifying things a bit here).  Unlike in other parts of the South where race-mixing was the be-all, end-all travesty, the social hierarchy that developed in Louisiana was similar to that of Spanish-controlled territories: the fully White Creoles, the “Colored” Creoles, and then the fully Black Creoles and slaves. The colored Creoles were very economically prosperous. White Creoles (typically French heritage, no interracial mixing) didn’t like the interracial relationships, but the colored Creoles kept on trucking and building up their communities and making bank and being prominent socialites themselves, at least within their economically prosperous and culturally-unique class.
In Louisiana and other places where it’s prominent, Voodoo as a spiritual/cultural practice is an insular affair--outsiders don’t know a tenth of what really goes on. What we supposedly “know” as outsiders is tourist shit--you learn the real stuff by being born into a family that practices it, or marrying into the family and come to learn the “family secrets” that way, and once you know it, you are not allowed to share that knowledge with anyone else. Real serious-like. I should mention that I am getting this from my Creole-of-Color professor. She told a small anecdote of how one cluster on her family tree once made their living as apothecaries and now her cousins from that same line are pharmacists. ##
Fully white Louisianan Creoles don’t know anything about Voodoo cuz it’s not their heritage or their culture--they’re just Catholic, maybe Protestant if they come from Anglo roots. All of this leads me to believe that Alastor is colored Creole.
A potentially sweet (likely correct) headcanon: He mentions his mother in passing in the pilot and appears to love her very much, especially her cooking, and given how even the most basic layman is aware of the prominence of women in voodoo, I’m 100% certain that Alastor learned his voodoo from his mother. She could have even been a prominent pillar of the community, a “Voodoo Queen”. Maybe she was a singer or something similarly performative and theatrical, which could have lent to Alastor’s radio/music schtick.  Ultimately, I’ve come to headcanon that his family was one of the lesser Big Names within the mixed creole community (Big, but not like a state-level Roosevelt- or Kennedy-big).
-----------------------------------------------
With all this in mind, I’ve been thinking about Alastor’s human skin tone. A trend I’ve noticed in art and animation is that when depicting different ethnicities as demons or deceased, certain colors are used as shorthand to “translate” their skin color of when they were alive (though there are probably exceptions)
White people are made much paler, sheet-white or clown white
Asian people are made white, but more of an egg shell or eggnog white.
Those with an ‘ambiguously brown’ skin color (Native, Latino, Middle Eastern, South Asian, mixed-race) are given a hue of gray which is adjusted depending on how dark brown they are.
Black people have a light purple or deep mauve skin color.
Alastor’s skin is a light gray
Tumblr media
and Vaggie, the Latina moth, is a few shades darker than his base tone,
Tumblr media
It leads me to believe that Alastor’s skin color is of a light brown to reflect his mixed racial heritage. I should note, however, that when it comes to interracial marriage and children, kids will pop out in a wide variety of skin tones. Kids can get the genes for a skin tone that hasn’t been seen since their great-great grandmother for no reason other than that’s how the dice were rolled. Some kids will come from a black-white couple and pass easily for white while a sibling can’t, or they look as if the genes took both parents and put their melanin in a paint mixer and chose the median.
In my mind’s eye, Alastor would be seen by fellow Louisanians as clearly Colored in the same way that there seems to be a race category for all the race mix ratios in Brazil, but for people like me that did not grow up in a culture that saw a lot of that happening (more just “what flavor of European are you?”), Alastor would be seen by me as a tanned white man.

Prologue
           Original AO3 link
Inside of a well lit room, a young Latino man adjusted his shirt. He flashed the mirror a grin, his delicate white teeth shining underneath his peachy lips. “Wow Roman, you trying to flirt with a mirror? You must be getting desperate.” A cool voice purred from the door opposite to the mirror.
Roman whipped around, a puffy pout face replacing where his smile sat. “Oh hush up Hollowmean.” The paler man chuckled at the nickname, swiftly making his way across the room. He cast a playful glare up at the taller man, his sunken in eyes and dark eyeshadow giving him a slightly dangerous look. Roman gave a shiver before shoving the petite man away.
“What are you doing in my room? You know it’s important that you don’t interrupt my schedule.” His companion gave a sigh, “It's just that Des called again to remind me that we are now 15 minutes late and for you to hurry your ass up before he drags you there.” Roman wrinkled up his nose, giving a loud huff.
The maroon haired boy raised his bandaid decorated hands in defense. “Don’t get prissy with me Princey. I’m just the messenger.”
Roman gave a heavy sigh, grabbing something from a small box on his vanity. “Fine, let’s go Virgil. But this is your fault, I told you to wake me up early.” Virgil gave a chuckle, walking out of the room. His disgruntled brother followed behind, messing with the keys he had picked up.
The two men traveled down the stairs, out of the building and into Roman’s well loved Neon. Soon after they had started the drive to the nearby Whistler’s Cafe.
When they exited the car, Virgil let out a yelp as a blob of soft pastels ran into him. Pinning the darker man to it’s chest with a childish squeal. “Ve!” The pastel blob slowly became recognizable as a  baby faced boy with skin resembling the color of a hazelnut. The porcelain man gave a soft chuckle before embracing his attacker in a hug.
“Well good to see I’m not a priority!” Roman hmphed, turing his nose up in  playful revulsion. “Awww… Come on Ro!” The pastel boy released his victim, walking over to his other brother. “I love all of my family!” He wrapped Roman in a bone crushing hug.In spite of Roman’s muscular form, the shorter male was easily able to squeeze him. The hugging was interrupted by a hoarse laugh and everyone turned to face the youngest brother.
His face was a creamy white apart from a large red patch running from his forehead down his neck on the right side of his face. As he approached, he kept his hazel eyes trained on them.
Despite his air of confidence, he was clearly fidgeting. “Hey guys.” He saluted, smiling nervously between the three men. The pastel clad man grabbed his hand, pulling him into a hug, one soon joined by the other two. “Long time no see Dessy!” The hug initiator grinned widely, much to the satisfaction of Des. “Ya I’ve been meaning to come by Patton, but ya know. Being a lawyer is time consuming.”Patton got the widest grin on his face, chirping out. “Don’t you mean, time con-SUE-ming?” Roman let out a groan while the younger two just giggled. “Now where is Remus? It’s not a family without us all.” Des froze for a moment before nodding, a fake smile dotting his lips.
“He’s inside, lazy fuc-” The hazel eyed man froze when Patton cast him a glare, “Fuzz muffin!” He corrected quickly, “Sent me out to greet you guys. He says if we don’t get there fast he’s ordering everything and eating it too.” The emo brother couldn’t help but giggle, whipping his eye to make sure no tears ruin his eyeshadow. “Why is that unholy monster my brother?” Roman grumbled, walking towards the entrance. Virgil stuck out his tongue, adjusting the sleeves of his favorite hoodie.  “I’m not that bad.” He quipped, shoving Roman aside as he entered.
The wall of muscles gave an incoherent response, perhaps an offended Princey noise? Des placed his hand on Roman’s shoulder, “Cool it Prince Charmless, you gotta be the bigger person.” Roman broke into laughter, only to be greeted by a violent hiss from his tiny freckled brother. Patton quickly held the two apart, before forcing them to sit on opposite sides of the booth.
“Hello.” Roman’s twin cooed, slurping a banana milkshake from a swirly straw.
Patton gave his biggest puppy eyes, placing his head on the table. “Can I pwetty pwease have a sip Remus?” Remus quickly nodded, moving his drink over to Patton, he knew he wouldn’t be getting it back anytime soon.
Glancing between his four brothers, Virgil asked in a serious tone. “So are you all ready to go to the house?”

Welcome to my blog! this is where I'm going to post about my original story so I can keep track of everything!
Maublaise is a story that takes place in an apocalyptic world where people and animals were mutated by a chemical in bombs that were sent off when a corrupt leader of a country refused to listen to reason. Now, most people either travel alone, with groups, or live in the few cities/towns that groups of constructed. Some people that were mutated only grew animal-like appendages and such.
Lets meet the characters!
Nicket: our main protagonist! they're nonbinary and bisexual! they're also latino. They have brown eyes and bright reddish orange hair with brown roots that's curly and often pulled into a bun. They also have a fairly large birthmark next to their left eye.
Zayan: Nicket's childhood best friend! He's a trans guy and aro/ace. He has bright blue eyes and fluffy black hair with white streaks through it. On the sides of his head where youd find ears are slightly fuzzy stumps and scars that barely stretch to his cheeks.
Tayla: Also grew up with Nicket and Zayan! She's pansexual. She has lime green eyes and long hair where the top is pulled into a bun. She has a hyper fixation on mutants and can often be found studying them and drawing/writing about them in the notebook she always has on her.
Keziah: Travels the wasteland and is basically an expert on surviving it. He's gay. He has bright yellow eyes and short, fluffy orange hair. On the sides of his head, he has fluffy fox-like ears. His left ear is missing the tip and he has vitiligo so his cheeks have splotches that are paler than the rest of his skin.
Saxon: The ruler/mayor of the town Maublaise where most of the story takes place. He's often preaching about the war that caused the apocalypse and people and animals to alike to mutate. He says his goal is to 'rid the world of humanities previous mistakes' by taking 'half-beasts' or mutated people and surgically removing their physical animal-like traits. He has green eyes and blonde hair that's slicked back.
Wren: An old man that lives alone in Maublaise. He's a half-beast that was part bat but when he decided to move to Maublaise, he had to go under Saxons mandatory procedure and was left blind and hard of hearing because of it. He doesn't leave his house often because of his disability but Nicket visits him almost everyday to listen to his stories from before the war and have tea with him. His hair is gray and he has a buzz cut. He has a little stubble on his chin, his eyes are always shut and both have a single scar that stretches from his hairline to his cheekbones and similar to Zayan, has scars on the side of his face where his ears were.

ill post drawings and more about the characters later!

🔥 + The Novas
Send me a “ 🔥 “ for an unpopular opinion.
@ironmaidenfan
Overall, I don’t have many complaints and I did love the most recent Nova series, but…of course I do have a few things that kinda irk me. Sam’s kinda turned into a giant rant though. Sam’s is under the read more tab because…well, Marvel does a poor job of including the fact Sam is a POC in my opinion.
In regards to Rich, I don’t really ship him with Gamora. I mean, yes, they slept together in Annihilation, but to me it was more of a “friends with benefits” sort of thing going on. If I had to pair Rich with someone, it would be with Namorita because…well, he loved her. Of course, I haven’t read the old New Warriors series and I haven’t read Annihilation or Thanos Imperative since I am still fairly new to comics but…I just don’t see it. So the panel about him wanting kids and bringing back the Corps and so on, yeah I get that. Rich would want those things. The part about him loving Gamora? Not so sure about that. My question is why must writers feel the need to put two characters together just because they slept together? Plus, from what I know, the only man who gained Gamora’s romantic interest is Adam Warlock. To me, personally, it feels forced and kinda OOC for him and for her. One-sided on Rich’s end? Yeah, I can see that kinda. To me that would be more believable, since those things happen in real life with sexual relationships. He probably has a thing for badass women. Gamora? ….Not really. They lack chemistry for me, I guess.
Now Sam? This opinion probably isn’t unpopular (not that the one above can be considered unpopular either). Okay, confession time: When I first looked at Sam, until I saw his mother in the comic and seeing her speak Spanish, it didn’t dawn on me fully he was biracial. He is a POC. And I remember looking at his mom then back at him and being like “Why is he so pale? He looks white. Isn’t he supposed to have heritage from a Spanish-speaking country? Also, that is not how genetics work. I mean, yes, a latino can have paler skin but he shouldn’t have a skin tone that is like ivory like mine, right?” One of the things that I will commend about Sam’s and Rich’s latest run is the fact they actually reference the fact Sam is latino. And personally? I would like to see him drawn with darker skin, so first time readers actually don’t make the same ignorant assumption I did and actually reference to his heritage. Because thing is, unless explicitly told or shown, some readers might not readily grasp the fact the character is a POC if they are drawn with really light skin to where they look white. There is nothing wrong with darker or lighter skin tones and having different color skin but treat their culture with respect and treat them as a human being if you are going to write someone of a different race than you.
I would actually like for Sam to speak Spanish ffs. (This is actually my biggest complaint about the new Nova series. His mom speaks to him in a combination of Spanish and English and he UNDERSTANDS her at least partly, but he doesn’t say a single word in Spanish back when he can canonically speak SOME SPANISH. And the fact that his mom uses the language so much, you can’t tell me otherwise. I mean, I would like him to say a couple of sentences and not just “¡Hola!”) To me, the lack of latino culture in almost all of Sam’s comic runs (I mean, they did something right with including El Día de Los Reyes, which is an important holiday in hispanic and latinx culture and it made me so happy to see it and when saying the names of family members like “Abuelita”) is very frustrating. I love to incorporate the fact Sam is of latino decent however I feel like I have almost nothing to go off of from his comics and it makes me rather happy that I have studied the Spanish language for a few years now (allowing me to speak some of the language myself). Granted, my understanding of the language and the culture is imperfect (because I am not a POC), but I love to touch on the fact he is from a very different culture than I am. Sometimes, I am very unsure of how to incorporate  that into his character and making it believable. However, I do try my best even though I am not completely confident in that aspect of my portrayal, but I do try to keep it in consideration.

on ambiguity
His own racial blend (black and Samoan) means he is blessed with skin the color of graham crackers, a perfectly roasted marshmallow, and Abraham Lincoln on the penny. It's a rare combination. In the last census, the number of Americans identifying as “Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander” (a blanket term that includes people who trace their lineage to Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti, and lots of other small, warm islands) plus “Black or African American” was just 50,308. A figure so low it rounds out to 0.0 percent of the total U.S. population, though a more gracious person might say “less than 0.1 percent.” In other words, if you meet a 45-year-old half-black, half-Samoan man living in the United States, the odds are shockingly high he will be Dwayne Johnson. This uncommon ethnic background means that, in the right light, he can read as Pacific Islander, Latino, Middle Eastern, Native American, Southeast Asian, undead Scorpion King from an ancient civilization, black, white, or any combo thereof. (Johnson says white people often guess he is “…Greek?”) In other words, pretty much anyone can find themselves, or a slightly tanner or paler version of themselves, in Dwayne Johnson if they look hard enough; appearance-wise, he has a hometown advantage everywhere on earth.
i need to remember that if i am ever asked to give a strange fact about me it is that i read airplane magazines religiously (every flight) and i think celebrity interviews are the most underrated of good writing
