A thing I really want to know about the Chinese version is in what register do Abyssal creatures speak.
In English Elynas is extremely informal ("thanks a bunch") and so is Enjou ("I totally did betray them").
At the same time we have Abyss Lectors who use "hear ye".
(and then there's Childe)
Is it all over the place in the original too?

Alright, so I haven't seen active in genshin as of late..... But I finally watched the Fatui trailer...
Hot
But it's more than just that because of this man
Tumblr media
I mean, look at him. Not showing us your face? King behavior right there 🛐🛐 Hoyo pls never show us his face... 🛐🛐
But simping aside......
I saw him and my lore whore brain just clicked.
MF just look at this
Tumblr media
Bloodstained iron mask from the artifact set Bloodstained Chivalry.
For the uninitiated,
The Bloodstained Knight (formerly White Knight) was a Knight of Favonis who served under Arundolyn (Rostam's bestie and the grandmaster of KoF). He was trained by Rostam (Signora's dead bf) who taught him Chivalry, justice, and stuff. But in fact, ends up becoming obsessed with these concepts. His relentless pursuit of justice and slaughter for the sake of it ends up staining him, turning his possessions all black (the artifact set pieces + the black sword). so much so that even the people he protected now start to see him as yet another monster.
Homeboy is self-aware tho and realizes this, so he goes to Khaenri'an hoping to die in some battle but ends up discovering the curse of the nation. Witnessing this injustice, he pledges loyalty to the abyss.
"The code of chivalry tolerates not such injustice."
"If Abyss be thy name, I pledge to you my loyalty."
------------------
Just look at Capitano, the first thing that came to my mind was "Knight" and from Tartaglia's voice line we know he has unparalleled combat prowess.
"Though her methods tarnished her honor, Lohefalter's sacrifice is a great pity" -Capitano in the trailer
He talks of honor. It won't be false to assume that he understands these virtues and I'm gonna take a long shot here and say that maintains this "Honor" himself.
The point that sells me the most is the fucking maks and this line
"The iron mask the knight used to conceal their identity. Many have speculated about the face behind the mask."
They even have design similarities, just look at that star shape.
Tumblr media
what I believe is that
Capitano might be the bloodstained Knight
they both are immensely strong from what we can gather
honor/chivalry seems to be their thing
The black sword describes the knight as "forced to don an iron mask" just like Capitano
this won't be the first time we see someone from an artifact set making an appearance
SHEER VIBES
The bloodstained knight went to Khaenri'an and Pierro the 1st Harbinger is also from Khaenri'an (still a speculation but PRIMOGEM SHAPED PUPILS LIKE DAIN AND KAEYA) and there is no reason as to why he wouldn't recruit him? The mans collecting people with power left and right.
He is literally another perfect addition guys.

Thoughts on 1.4 Archon Quest
Khaenri’ah, Dainsleif, Aether & Lumine, and the Seven archons: Recaps, thoughts and theories.
These are what I gathered and my deduction so please take them with a grain of salt.
CW // Spoilers for Archon Quest Chapter I Act IV: We Will Be Reunited
- MC has the memory of Khaenri’ah which was destroyed 500 years ago. This confirms that Aether & Lumine are at least over 500 years old. The CN script also shows that Aether is the older of the two. (Lumine calling him Gege/Older brother and Aether calling her Meimei/Younger sister.)
- The Battle Pass Cutscene mentioned about the first crowned heir being deceived and believing that she was the queen of the kingdom of darkness. This is very likely alluded to Lumine and Khaenri’ah. (As Aether seems to be the MC in this cutscene and MHY’s preview of the Teyvat chapters.)
Once there was a glorious kingdom established among the heavens. From that kingdom came a crowned heir, tasked with seeking out the Genesis Pearl from the Kingdom of Darkness. The first crowned heir began her journey seeking pearl. But she was deceived, and the memory of her noble origins faded. She now believed that she was the queen of the Kingdom of Darkness. But take heart, a second crowned heir had already taken the path where the first had stumbled. This is the story of your journey of your tale to be told.
(ETA: Some mentioned that the BP cutscene might not refer to MC and their twin due to the female one being the younger one. While it is also plausible that the cutscene might be talking about other characters, it doesn’t completely disprove that the cutscene isn’t about MC and their twin either. Because the terms ‘first’ and ‘second’ crowned heirs do not always mean the first crowned heir is the older of the two.)
- Dainsleif mentioned that it was the gods that destroyed Khaenri’ah. From what we gather, Khaenri’ah was 1) a country without a god to begin with, and 2) advanced in technology (apparently beyond the current Teyvat), it is likely that Celestia’s excuse to destroy it was either the hubris of humans or Khaenri’ah was advancing in the direction that wasn’t beneficial to Celestia. Could be both.
- The lore of Bloodstained Chivalry also mentioned that the curse upon the kingdom of darkness is unjust.
He ventured into the fallen ancient kingdom, and died in battle in the monsters' lair. At the bottom of the world, he learned the origin of the monsters that destroyed the ancient kingdom.
"The ancient kingdom was wrongfully cursed,"
"Turning its inhabitants into monsters."
"The code of chivalry tolerates not such injustice."
"If Abyss be thy name, I pledge to you my loyalty."
Still, for a nation that ‘fought for land with steel and blood’ (See: Field Tiller), is the curse place upon Khaenri’ah truly unjust? And if it is indeed unjust, what are the reasons for Khaenri’ah’s war waging and for Lumine to empathize with its cause after its destruction? Is she really deceived/corrupted?
- Lumine mentioned having journeyed through Teyvat before, but when she woke Aether up, it was the Cataclysm already. So the world Lumine had travelled was the world before the destruction of Khaenri’ah. This implies that it’s likely she knows (some if not all of) the seven archons. (Previous Dendro archon died ~500 years ago).
Zhongli might know something, but whether he chooses to speak of it remains a question. This might also relate to why he gave his gnosis to the Tsaritsa.
- Dain said it was the gods that descended upon the earth and destroyed Khaenri’ah, but there is no evidence (and the lack thereof) whether any of the Seven was involved in this. But it is possible that the Cataclysm might be related to the death of the previous Dendro god.
I think Dain’s negative opinions of the Seven is more from the Seven's relationship with Celestia. He speaks of gods as collective rather than an individual.
- Celestia is foreshadow to be the actual antagonist? (Or at least, the cyclical system that should be ended?) The nature of the world(s) Celestia has been creating/controlling is cyclical. Civilization has been built and destroyed over and over again (See: Tiara of Frost). An interesting question here is whether the Seven Archons system has been implemented before the current Teyvat.
Personally, I believe that the Seven system is exclusive to the current Teyvat due to the occurrence of the Archon War. Not only do the seven seats let Celestia control the direction of humanity through the Seven, Celestia can also monitor the gods.
(Possible) Chain of Authority:
Celestia >>> The Seven Archons >>> Gods that accepted the rule of the Seven >>> Humanity
Note (1): Gods that refused to be under the rule of the Seven fled from the continent of Teyvat and became evil gods.
Note (2): The fact that Tsaritsa only planned to rebel against Celestia after the Catacylsm 500 years ago could mean that not all gods have an idea about what Celestia is up to, at least until the destruction of Khaenri’ah.
- The Seven Archons are tasked with the responsibility to guide humanity. However, with the newer generation of archons not interested in the obligation to guide humanity, with Venti originally leaving Monstadt free of its rulers and Zhongli retiring, how important to Celestia is actually this duty?
Perhaps Celestia never means for humanity to prosper to the point of challenging the heavens from the start? As long as the civilizaion doesn’t advance in the direction that Celestia finds undesirable, it is acceptable?
Note (3): Rex Lapis’ death and Zhongli giving away his gnosis means that there will be no new Geo Archon to replace him. Consequently, this makes Liyue godless city but a nation run by humans. However, Liyue has yet to incur the wrath from Celestia for the time being.
- How omnipotent is Celestia? Is the eye of Celestia all-seeing? Does Celestia even know the Tsaritsa is collecting gnoses? And what about Rex Lapis faking his death? Does Celestia even know his death was fake? If so, has Celestia begun an operation, a counter-measure, against the possible rebellion and/or the Abyss?
- Also, at the end of the quest, Dain chased after Lumine with the Eye of the First Tiller with him and the upside-down Venti Statue was still not destroyed. Are we still getting mecha-Osial? (They mention the attachment of Osial’s limbs to the statue, does this mean the abyss plans to dissect Osial first? Poor thing. I can only hope they leave him alone.)

since i run kaeya on a physical dps build and do equip him with two pieces of bloodstained chivalry, i’m going to headcanon that the bloodstained knight was someone that he did idolise and base his fighting technique off. although, becoming more similar to the bloodstained knight as he got older made kaeya realise the story wasn’t all it was chalked up to be. becoming similar to the bloodstained knight meant having a price to pay.
kaeya’s multiplier is, objectively, one of the best in the game out of the sword users ( no, i will not be taking constructive criticism ). physical dps builds are recommended if you’d like some lovely numbers, and i thought wouldn’t it be fun to make use of how powerful kaeya’s attacks are when paid attention to. on top of that ! kaeya’s fighting style is not entirely from mondstadt. he is the only knight whose fighting style is named “ ceremonial bladework ” and not “ favonius bladework. “
when left in mondstadt, it was not only his father and diluc that compelled kaeya to become a knight of favonius, but the story of the bloodstained knight, which is a khaenri’ahn fairytale.
most likely rooted in truth, kaeya came to idolise this story and the knight the myth was most likely based of.
this is the lore found on “ bloodstained final hour. ”
Tumblr media
a timepiece once used by a knight. the liquid inside has dried up, rendering it useless.
deep in the abyss, where celestial bodies cast no light,
the bloodstained knight kept this timepiece, though time had lost all meaning.
at an end was the bloodstained knight's story, for he realised there was no place for him on this earth. he ventured into the fallen ancient kingdom, and died in battle in the monsters' lair. at the bottom of the world, he learned the origin of the monsters that destroyed the ancient kingdom.
" the ancient kingdom was wrongfully cursed, "
" turning its inhabitants into monsters. "
" the code of chivalry tolerates not such injustice. "
" if abyss be thy name, i pledge to you my loyalty. "
similarities to kaeya made me want to look into the other aspects of the bloodstained chivalry set.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a dried flower stained black with blood and now as hard as steel. probably some sort of a memento for its former master.
a common white flower given to the knight by a rescued damsel.
it is dried and hardened by the blood from all his bloodshed.
thanking him for his valour, the damsel offered a reward.
he turned down all she gave, save for a pure white flower.
" for a knight, chivalry is its own reward. "
"this flower shall be my medal. that is all I need."
he wore the flower upon his heart.
like his armour, it was stained as black as a winter's night.
like his heart, it was hardened like a tempered blade.
i thought that it was interesting how they compared this blood stained flower to a tempered blade, a winter’s knight, when kaeya is known as the frostblade, how he is known to use both words and weapons, to be warm and cold at the same time, how his innocence as a child was quite literally stained with blood as and ! his name means flower, so this would draw comparisons to a flower that was once innocent stained with blood, stained with war. i just think that a younger kaeya would be able to identify with the bloodstained knight because of such similar motifs.
Tumblr media
a raven feather pinned to a knight's cape. countless bloodstains have dyed it pitch black.
One of the countless raven feathers stuck to the Bloodstained Knight.
For where there is blood, ravens shall follow.
In the end the bloodstained knight could no longer tell whether the blood that stained him was his own or that of his enemies.
eventually, on his long journey filled with bloodshed, he came to a realisation:
his path of so-called chivalry had turned him from the white knight he used to be into the monster he had now become.
his only followers were the ravens drawn to the bloodshed he left in his wake.
kaeya canonically sees himself as an antihero. he keeps others at bay, even those that he treasures. on top of that, his stance as someone who was planted in mondstadt, someone who has a role in a more ancient plot, has rendered him unable to make meaningful connections and i think that might also be because of the fear they might become hurt. add onto that that kaeya is khaenri’ahn, a so called “ sinner ” and someone who is still under the effects of the khaenri’ahn curse. he is a knight has ever reason to become a villain, why wouldn’t he understand the bloodstained knight’s story ?
Tumblr media
the dark metallic vessel owned by the bloodstained knight. it’s exterior has been stained as black as the night by smoke and coagulated blood.
originally an exquisite silver goblet with gold engravings depicting the feats of a chivalrous knight.
but blood and smoke have stained the cup beyond recognition.
covered in blood, the knight who slayed demons returned from the scourged battlefield, only to find that those awaiting his rescue were nowhere to be found among the collapsed houses.
defeated, the bloodstained knight took the smoke-blackened goblet, and vowed to rid the world of monsters, of poverty, and of evil.
i couldn’t twist this into kaeya’s perspective at first but !! if you look at the “world” in the perspective of “khaenri’ah” then it does make a little more sense coming from that. kaeya, sacrificing the person who he’s become in order to rid khaenri’ah of monsters ? i can see it. i can see it so clearly.
Tumblr media
the iron mask the knight used to conceal their identity. many have speculated about the face behind the mask.
a luxurious platinum mask that once belonged to a knight of noble birth.
the dark stains of dry blood are now a permanent part of its appearance.
as the bloodstained knight reached out to help a person in need after slaying the monster. the way she cowered in fear made the knight realise: He was now a monster himself. Tainted by the blood and cruelty of his drawn-out war.
"Shield me from the eyes."
"Of those I vowed to protect."
"And shield them the horrors I am bound to effect."
listen, i mean, c’mon, that knight of noble birth line ??? “ prince kaeya ? ” of course i’m going to latch onto that bit. also, the idea of a monstrous knight is one i love completely. kaeya, and the blood of those from khaenri’ah turning into monsters is already canon. but, kaeya’s shifty morality when it comes to sacrificing ideals for goals ? kaeya dealing with those he will hurt if he chooses khaenri’ah over mond ? kaeya who is already nonchalant about appearing like a bad guy in order to achieve results ? kaeya already has the makings of a monster with only common sense and compassion for those that he cares about holding him back, if you wanted to see it that way. i feel as if kaeya has a capacity for choosing either side, and reasons to protect both of them, so maybe he also sees the bloodstained knight as someone he doesn’t want to be like, even though he once idolised the story of a knight who would go so far to protect what he deemed was important.

The Abyss Order-The Abyss is an afterlife??? Hell??? The fallen ancient kingdom Khaenri'ah???
"And so, the black-stained knight persisted on his path, pursuing monsters in the name of justice, Until he came upon an ancient, ruined realm, where he discovered the ultimate injustice..."
He ventured into the fallen ancient kingdom, and died in battle in the monsters' lair. At the bottom of the world, he learned the origin of the monsters that destroyed the ancient kingdom. "The ancient kingdom was wrongfully cursed," "Turning its inhabitants into monsters." "The code of chivalry tolerates not such injustice." "If Abyss be thy name, I pledge to you my loyalty.""

So I was rereading the Bloodstained Chivalry artifacts story again and wanted to point this piece out from "Bloodstained Final Hours":
At an end was the Bloodstained Knight's story, for he realized there was no place for him on this earth. He ventured into the fallen ancient kingdom, and died in battle in the monsters' lair. At the bottom of the world, he learned the origin of the monsters that destroyed the ancient kingdom.
"The ancient kingdom was wrongfully cursed," "Turning its inhabitants into monsters." "The code of chivalry tolerates not such injustice." "If Abyss be thy name, I pledge to you my loyalty."
The knight had connections to Khaenri'ah - the fallen ancient kingdom spoken here. And "If Abyss be thy name" makes it sound like what's left of Khaenri'ah became the Abyss, though I'm ?? unsure about that because if so, I feel like Dainsleif would have remained faithful to it. He was for a short while and left because of differing motives, so it could be?
But another thing, I guess that would confirm that those from Khaenri'ah were turned into monsters, right? The abyss mages themselves aren't actually human but they can speak the human languages, so are they also one of those people of Khaenri'ah?
I need more info y'all.

Ok, Childe as a wuxia/xianxia trope. It's honestly a bit embarrassing how well this fits.
(blame @a-yarn-of-purple-prose for this post and if anyone here is a wuxia fan feel free to correct me, I'm new to the genre)
Wuxia is a Chinese martial arts fantasy genre you are all familiar with. An adjacent genre is called xianxia, "immortal heroes", it ramps all the fantasy elements up to eleven and skews tropes a bit (we'll get back to that).
A common trope is some kind of unorthodox school/sect or technique, allowing to achieve greater power without the usual decades of training. It could be straight-out evil or just revolving around chaos.
Such a martial school is usually called an evil/demonic sect (sect is more like a clan in that setting, not the modern concept of sect) and their techniques tend to drive practitioners to insanity. Either because they are inherently corrupting or because getting too much power without growing as a person is really not the best thing for your mental health. They are also often cast from hp points.
And then there's the archetype of a demonic sect heir. The best pupil or simply someone who has inherited a lost art. Proud, always greedy for more strength, often noble in some weird way.
*points to our calamity of a boy*
Common elements of such stories include:
Falling into some weird realm or meeting a weird person who teaches the hero a Forbidden Technique
Learning a technique too quickly through some sort of magic/alchemy/memory manipulation
Some people are so singular in their pursuit they become insane (走火入魔)
Ambition bad, loyalty and family good
Conflicting loyalties, generally a conflict between a chosen path and personal weaknesses/attachments (could be both ego and familal love, and this is more of a xianxia trope)
Fits like a horoscope so far but wait.
There's a very interesting case of Korean murim genre (their version of wuxia) where sects are less varied (I recommend this post for a basic introduction) and we get three paths:
Justice/Righteous/Orthodox/Light — theoretically they keep the Evil Faction at bay, and protect innocent people, but usually are corrupt to the core
Evil/Unorthodox/Dark — these try gaining as much power as possible and attempt ruling the whole world
Demonic Cult — usually dont take part in evil and justice battles, follow their own code of conduct based on their religion, value strength above all else.
(I'm sure there's a similar distinction in wuxia too, I just can't find it in the deluge of lore)
"Demonic" is closer to "pagan" or "heathen" than Christian idea of demonic here, their beliefs are often based on Zoroastrianism and worshipping a sacred flame. Do you remember all the Persian themes used for Khaenri'ah? And Surtalogi being the flame on Surtr's sword in Norse mythology. I also had the impression that Genshin gnostic references are based on the Zoroastrian-flavoured branch of Gnosticism.
In murim the trope of demonic sect heir is called "heavenly demon" (I believe, a more correct translation would be "supreme heathen"), they are utterly badass, live for the glory of battle, seem more like forces of nature and follow a very strict honour code often conflicting with normal human ethics.
(do I need to spell it out)
TvTropes also says this about Korean stories:
Tumblr media
(do I need to spell it out pt.2)
I'm not sure why a Chinese studio would focus on the Korean version of this trope but I'm sure something like this exists in China as well or maybe there's a popular manhwa that inspired authors.
Xianxia extends the fantastic element further, focusing on Taoist concepts and practices and adding all kinds of magical realms (celestial, demonic, etc) and magical beings and making immortality achievable. I still need to read more about it but if I understand that right, demonic heir trope turns into a demon prince in this case. An actual visitor from the demon realm or a practitioner who achieved immortality through dubious means.
These are fae-coded in a way very similar to Childe and have a certain nonchalance towards things most humans would consider traumatic. They are simply not bothered by them, having a different set of morals or faring from a realm that is much worse.
Our boy isn't that (he's still very much human) but he's aesthetically coded like one, same as Scaramouche is yokai-coded, despite not being a yokai.
So. When people say Childe's arc is a reference to Journey to the West, it's not entirely untrue, JttW is the classic of xianxia genre and Childe does belong to the same genre. He, however, is not Sun Wukong but a different, darker trope.
This also explains why he has that "shonen anime protag but not quite" vibe. Shonen was heavily influenced by wuxia but this trope never quite made it to anime or maybe never became popular enough. It's not a deconstruction, it's a different story. Or perhaps a deconstruction of that different story.

Weird math metaphors aside, we seem to have a rock-paper-scissors situation with Abyss, Celestia and forbidden knowledge.
Forbidden knowledge tramples celestial order, Celestia consistently defeats the Abyss (when it bothers to), the Abyss consumes forbidden knowledge with no ill aftereffects for itself.
As in, Visions are known to help people resist Tatarigami influence and Celestial Nails are good at containing Abyss.
According to Dottore's notes, dead gods' remains provide symptomatic treatment of Eleazar (which is forbidden knowledge corruption).
I don't know about you but I'm starting to have mad respect for Dottore. His notes have been incredibly useful in my lore research.

Do you think the Abyss has a scent? (I always imagined it's not unpleasant, just inhuman. Ink, ozone, hot metal, good agarwood oil. Real agarwood oil, the one that smells of dark wood and mint and fur of celestial foxes)
Do you think Childe smells of it sometimes? (Even his basic elemental skill is abyssal in nature, after all. Something must cling)
Do you think whoever you ship with the guy eventually starts to think of it as "home"?
Do you think they go into the Chasm or Enkanomiya and recognize it?

Things I've seen (and sometimes participated) in the childemains-adjacent part of genshin fandom so far.
Quoting Greek tragedies extensively
People discussing technical details of sex with giant butterflies for several days
Discussions about The Symbolism Of Whales
Debates about what constituents an orphic myth
Four people looking at a 200 questions checklist for dissociation symptoms (one day I'll fill it)
Repeated complaints about the limitations of modern psychiatric diagnoses
A gender revolution on the main Genshin subreddit
An ungodly amount of literature analysis and world mythology discussions
An even worse amount of fishing jokes
A post about how Chopin's music screams world domination
I'm sure I forgot something.
As of yesterday, the list also includes discussing chemistry of the scent of blood and chestnut blossoms.

I'm actually starting to dig the troll mirror metaphor, it fits surprisingly well.
I went to reread Andersen's tale and got reminded of how the mirror shattered in the first place.
The troll's disciples tried to carry the mirror into heaven with the idea of making fools of the angels and god. The higher they lifted it, the more the mirror laughed, and eventually it slipped from their grasp, fell back to earth and shattered.
DOES IT REMIND YOU OF SOMETHING
Something something Khaenri'ahn sages and the arrogation of mankind.
Tumblr media
As the story goes, some shards got stuck in peoples' hearts and eyes, making them cold, bitter and unable to appreciate anything that wasn't perfect.
Perhaps our calamity of a boy hasn't seen anything particularly terrible in whatever place he ended up in. Perhaps his ability to see things is messed up.
(like Dvalin couldn't see anything behind his own hurt. or like how the Festering Desire sword affects people)
It would also tie into Genshin's recurring theme of horrible truths, beautiful illusions and dreams as a way to bridge the two.

Ok, another unpopular take about Childe (am I projecting? I definitely am).
Everyone says him seeing himself as a weapon is tragic but I don't think it is. It's the least tragic thing about him really (headcanon: everything that seems horrible about his life is actually good. bad things are everything else).
TMI: I was a very traumatized kid around his age and I remember thinking "I just want to be a door through which something beautiful comes into the world". It provided a certain freedom from being a person.
Being a person seemed to lead nowhere at that time.
(I got less edgy since then)
I believe he's doing exactly that. Being a person sucks in his particular case.
After all, what's wrong with being a thing of beauty and purpose?

I wonder if Genshin Capitano, just like the Commedia dell'arte Capitano has never really been who he claims, just appropriated the title for himself.
Just some Abyssal dork wearing the original knight's face.
(that is, if he still has a face)
Also from the Bloodstained Chivalry set timepiece:
At an end was the Bloodstained Knight's story, for he realized there was no place for him on this earth. He ventured into the fallen ancient kingdom, and died in battle in the monsters' lair.
So what if the original knight did die, and not metaphorically (if it's his story at all, of course), and something else replaced him.
(and maybe I just want him to be a dork)
