Wights, vampires, mummies, and an apparition are just a few of the undead haunting Empyrea, even before the party opens the Gates of Death and enters the Halls of the Undead (Keith Parkinson cover art for AD&D module I12: Egg of the Phoenix, TSR, 1987) Originally published in 1982 as R-3, a 32-page RPGA exclusive module by Frank Mentzer, the 1987 version was expanded to 100 pages by Mentzer and Jennell Jaquays.

Oh, huh. I didn’t realize until I flipped through this to write about it that I12: Egg of the Phoenix (1987) is a super module. It collects the first four of Frank Mentzer’s R-series modules — R1: To the Aid of Falx ,R2: Investigation of Hydell, R3: Egg of the Phoenix and R4: Doc’s Island. Sort of. According to Shannon Appelcline’s write up on Drive-Thru, the collection was overseen by Jennell Jaquays, who rethreaded the four scenarios into one long campaign. I have no idea how weird that is — the R-series number among the rarest D&D modules, so I’ve never read them. I’ve no idea if they were meant to be connected, but here we are, with them connected!
No, they are definitely not meant to be connected. The sequence is different here. I gotta admit, the whole thing is hard to parse. There is no real narrative frame to reference, events and machinations just unfold along with the encounters. There is a good deal of political stuff going on that also works to connect everything, but… We start out with a slaver selling zombies with permanent illusions (and killing folks to keep up with demand) and then there are the caves of time and a trip to the domains of the evil elemental rulers (no Cryonax, though, what a rip-off). There are several good environments to explore, mostly a variety of dungeons — caves, crypts, castle, volcano lab, a well-realized cityscape. Individual encounters range from quite good to downright baffling. I don’t understand the final chapter on Doc’s Island at all. I dunno, not having read the source material I can’t say for sure, but despite a mighty effort, I think Jaquays might have whiffed on this one.
Keith Parkinson cover. Nice. Moody. I like his dim light color palettes, and this is no exception. Tree man is pretty cool, too. Tree wight? I dunno. Interiors are credited to Graham Nolan, but that’s a fib. Nolan’s in the mix, but so is Jim Holloway and someone named Walters and a couple others I can’t quite ID. Such are the perils of anthologizing. Good variety in terms of tone and quality, though.

When she was young and not yet Loop, barely even L-i18, she dreamed of the sky. What was a horizon? A distant line? Somehow the biggest thing in the world and yet too mundane or secret that the handlers never spoke of it. Maybe they missed it too. Maybe it was in their dreams as they slept hundreds of meters below the sea and the sky and the horizon.
Not-Loop kept most of her curiosity bottled up. Questions were rarely tolerated. Could she miss something she cannot remember? Or maybe she hadn't seen it at all. Not-Loop, little L-i18, didn't remember a time when looking up didn't treat her to the same view of gray reinforced metal or the darkest, deepest blue.
The sky was a far away thing; a fairy tale, like family and friends. And safety.
This was back when Indie was Indie, before L-i18 killed her. Indie used to be alive and the sky was a dream and even if most nights were met with bruises and bloody knees, little L-i18 had a friend and someone to share her questions with. What if they saw the sky together someday?
Now Loop was Loop and she had seen so many skies. Different dimensions had different elements which meant different resources which meant color combinations her childhood imagination couldn't even begin to conceive.
Seeing the sky always felt like a half-step. Moving forward, but always that moment of hesitation. That urge to look to her side, where Indie was supposed to be.
They were supposed to see it, together.
But L-i18 had killed I-i12. She would never see the sky and Loop sees too many. Indie is dead and Loop is alive and that means she must work. Indie is dead and Deep Blue needs maintenance and Loop is alive so she must perform it. Deep Blue killed her handlers and now Loop is the one left to do the work.
Alone again. The work continues. Loop keeps moving forward, one step, then another. The hesitation never leaves.

Actually Im feeling mildly confident here’s the full floodworld wip writing thing
Deep Blue's initial creation isn’t her fault, but its ascension into complex AI is.
At age ten Loop kills her best friend. It’s something they’re all putting them through. Prove you’re strong enough. Prove you’re not a waste of resources. The suits take bets. Privately Loop thinks killing off half the force is a waste of resources, but publicly she crawls on her belly, half coagulated blood dripping from somewhere behind her head, and wraps her hands around Indie-i12’s throat.
The buzzer rings loud and sudden, and Loop falls limp, rolling onto her back. Beside her Indie-i12 rasps weakly, and behind her a suit comes in through a door that she hadn’t noticed before—it was seamless with the walls and becomes so again as it closes. He’s followed by two guards, their guns pointed down but the safety off and their fingers hovering over the trigger. Suit’s saying something to her but she isn’t listening, too busy watching the guard on the left scoop what remains of Indie into his arms. The way he holds her is soft, almost parental, cradling her red face in the crook of his arm, before he throws her body over his shoulder and leaves. Indie’s eyes, barely cracked open, briefly flick to Loop before closing fully. She isn’t sure if she imagines it or not.
In the cantine they talk. Loop and the other kids. Indie-i3 looks at her like she’s killed his sibling. She has, but he’s not supposed to know that. So he instead of attacking, he watches her the same way a carrion watches a lion spilling out its guts drag itself its final feet. He’s also killed her siblings—seven of them if her count is right—but Indie-i12 is different. Was different. She was alive in a way that made the suits uncomfortable. Seemed aware of things even the other Indies didn’t know. Brilliant in a way that meant she wasn’t supposed to die. And yet.
Loop hadn’t meant to kill her. Had meant to have them beat each other until neither could move, until the guards came in and they could both go limp and be dragged off. Until the test was recorded null on both sides. Until the program had whittled down its numbers to 50 of each class and they would both be fine.
