What inspired you for the idea of something just like this?

It wasn’t one, solid thing — like a lightning-bolt moment. I think, for something (just like this) in particular, it was a combination of my interests and... opportune song-lyrics. And just.... sort of sitting and thinking, I guess?

That sounds so unglamorous like that, lmao, but the thing is, while you can have those genius moments of sudden inspiration, sometimes things just come together because they can.

surrender (whenever you’re ready) was a lightning-bolt moment, and it struck because I was in the perfect maelstrom of being new to My Hero Academia, having been introduced to the concept of self-insert Reader fics, via tiktok, and being in the middle of a phase where I was taking great joy in buying myself flowers, when I could (and then sharing the photos of them on my instagram, where I would then threaten my friends with the knowledge that if I thought I could get away with it, I would fake my death and run off to Tokyo to start a flower shop). It was also around this time that I was watching these documentaries about different mangaka, to me; I like behind-the-scenes stuff, in regards to creative fields, so I ended up binging a few of them.

I made a note of the florist idea, though (“a florist, the hero thrown through the front window of a flower shop”), and was then like, fuck it, I’m stupid and competitive, let’s try and do more — and just... wrote down the second idea? Which was the bare bones of what’s now something (just like this) (“a mangaka, who’s been contracted for a new pro-hero series, and needs inspo”). I don’t even remember the like... specific way this happened? I was pretty obsessed with Natalie Taylor’s Surrender, at this point — and knew immediately I wanted to name the Bakugou fic after it. Likewise, I was also playing Coldplay’s Something Just Like This repeatedly, at the same time — the lyrics are literally about stories and superheroes. I dunno. For the life of me, I cannot pinpoint the exact inspiration without knowing that it all — everything I love and am even just mildly interested in — just... came together and contributed to it, in the end.

The thing about creativity is that (for me, anyways) it’s a bit like putting a puzzle together. Like, you get the “ah HA” moments, sometimes, and they are magnificent — but a lot of the time, the rest of the time, it’s literally just you shuffling around the pieces of ideas and things you like (or don’t like) until something fits together in a way that works, that gives you a complete picture.

There were other ideas that I wrote down at the same time — a civvie receptionist for Todoroki, who was learning pottery and collected cute stationery. A barista, who’s hobby was painting — paintings that ended up being hung up in the cafe they worked out, and their Pro-Hero taking a photo of it and uploading it to their socials. But these ideas either got scrapped or remade (the civvie receptionist is now a jeweller, and the barista has been done better by other writers lmao. also when i really think about it i’m not sure i want to revisit the war flashbacks that being a barista was for me, LMAO); it’s just the nature of the beast.

I dunno. I really dunno. It’s just... it’s just a combination of things. Sometimes they work together perfectly, and become fleshed out. Sometimes they don’t, and remain skeletons. something (just like this) worked out... hopefully, at any rate, lmao. Time will tell on that front.

I’m gonna leave some screenshots from the aforementioned mangaka documentary, about Ryoichi Ikegami — it’s only tangentially related, but still kinda applicable, I think:
