2020 in review: kdramas (the heart fluttering, the disappointing, the saviors of 2020)

it’s december 31st! the new year is quite literally upon us (some of y’all are already in 2021) and my procrastinating self has chosen to upload this today. i’ve always loved these rec lists and I wanted to do one for 2020! this year was a rollercoaster for kdramas with some excellent ones and some not so excellent ones. i watched all of these in 2020 but not all of them were released in 2020.

drama that made me laugh

When The Camellia Blooms (2019)

i finally got around to watching when the camellia blooms this year and it. was. so. funny. oh my goodness, the comedic timing in so many scenes was pure excellency and im kinda mad at myself that i didn’t watch this last year. this isn’t just a comedy for those who are interested, its a thriller/romance but its also so fucking funny. definitely watch this if you want to laugh (and be touched bc the emotional scenes in this one are beautiful)

drama that made me cry

Sweet Home (2020)

hahah….. um this one is gonna go to sweet home friends. i went into this one with zero expectations and the first couple episodes didn’t really wow me? but i kept watching and holy shit fam. this show really picks up story-wise around ep 4 and makes the viewer love a lot of these initially unlikable characters. all i can say is that the end was devastating for me and i cried quite a bit. (warning, there are a lot of mature themes in this one so make sure you look for trigger warnings or send me an ask and i’ll list them all out for you)

best OST

Itaewon Class (2020)

i loved the ost for itaewon class!! the music is just so inspirational and pump up music, its so good. my favorites are ‘you make me back’ by woosung and ‘start’ by gaho.

drama with chemistry royalty (aka the best couple)

i have three for this one because i just cannot choose one.

It’s Okay To Not Be Okay (2020)

we recognize this one as one of the best things to come out of 2020. go moon young and moon kang tae have some of the best chemistry i have ever seen in a drama couple. i waited on the edge of my seat every single week for the next couple of episode just so i could fawn over these two. they work so well together, lift each other up, and so fucking funny together and support one another. while they’re not the chillest couple (lmao) they’re most certainly one with the most personality. they’re so cute and bicker and they just get each other. who could ask for more.

Flower of Evil (2020)

our badass mom and dad 😭😭. this was another peak drama that came out this year and our married partners-in-crime-but-not-really had amazing chemistry. baek hee sung and cha ji won were so cute as a married couple but they were even more precious later on in the drama after certain things unfolded (no spoilers). they both just get each other and protected one another as well as on the most precious kdrama children this year, their daughter eunha. they were so wholesome, flower of evil is so very worth a watch.

Into The Ring (2020)

this was one of the more underappreciated kdramas of the year but hoo buddy was the main couples chemistry top notch. they were so friggin cute and i just couldn’t. goo se ra is highkey one of the best female characters i’ve ever seen, she’s absolute chaos, lawful chaos, but chaos nonetheless. her other half, seo gong myung is opposite from her as lawful neutral. he’s just along for the ride that is se ra and loves her. they’re both so very fond and protective of each other and back each other up!! very very cute and you’ll definitely replay more than a couple of their scenes together.

most disappointing

Record of Youth (2020)

it’s sad but true… i went into this one with so much hope and excitement (i was riding off that ‘psycho but its okay’ high) and i was vastly disappointed. the plot mostly focused on the male lead, and there wasn’t much characterization for the female lead which i didn’t like. honestly, i only cared about maybe 3-4? characters in the whole drama. the rest were absolutely terrible or plain boring and i ended up skipping eps 14 and 15 and just watched the finale. i would not recommend tbh.

drama you can’t really get through

Crash Landing on You (2019)

this one is absolutely on me, i want so badly to love this one. but i just… can’t seem to get past ep 2? i’ve tried!! i swear, but i just cannot get through it. maybe in 2021, i can try again and i’ll enjoy it more.

drama everyone else liked but was meh

Kairos (2020)

i though kairos was a bit predictable tbh. i know those of us who did end up watching it really liked it but maybe its because i watch so many crime/mystery shows that this one didn’t really do it for me. the writing is quite solid and everything connects well, i would recommend that those who don’t really watch thrillers, to watch this one. (also the friendship between the female lead and her two friends is suuuper cute and worth it alone to watch kairos)

favorite romance

It’s Okay To Not Be Okay (2020)

yeah… this one wins again lol. what can i say, i just loved it so much and the main theme of the show is romance (its also a comedy and a mental health/healing drama) all i can say is watch this if you haven’t yet, its definitely worth it!!

favorite mystery

Memorist (2020) & Watcher (2019)

i really enjoyed these two mystery dramas. both were super fun to watch and very kinda unique in their own ways. i liked memorist because it was lowkey funny and i liked the relationships between the characters, but most importantly i couldn’t guess the main antagonist by the end! i really thought i knew who it was and then i was completely wrong lmao. watcher was also very good, the main trio had really good chemistry and i really cared about all the characters. (also i’ll never say no to watching seo kang joon) plus the plot twists threw me a bit at the end which is always a feeling i welcome, i love being surprised and wrong (as long as it makes sense)

favorite slice of life

Hospital Playlist (2020)

oh my goodness, i was late to the hospital playlist party and i regret it because this show is so. so. good. its just a slice of life following 5 friends who are doctors and work at the same hospital together but its so much more than that. this is honestly one of the first shows i’ve seen that are optimistic? in the show, every time i thought a plot was going to play out a certain way (usually negatively, as tends to be life unfortunately) it surprised me by taking the more optimistic wholesome route. characters in subplots changed for the better, became more understanding, chose to do the right thing, etc. if you want a feel good drama where the main characters have wonderful platonic chemistry and just care about each other but is also super funny, watch hospital playlist!! (season 2 is coming out early 2021 and im so pumped)

favorite fantasy

The Untamed (2019)

this one is a cdrama but i watched it in 2020, mostly because of how many people on the internet were adamant that the rest of us watch this and ngl they were v right. the untamed was very very good and im really glad i gave it a chance and watched it, its also my first cdrama ever. the chemistry between the male leads is honestly what makes this show and its worth the 50? i think? episodes. to be completely honest the fanfiction for the show are peak and if you do watch this, go straight to ao3 and you will not be disappointed.

dramas that saved 2020

The Uncanny Counter (2020) & Run On (2020)

these two dramas are among those that started airing at the end of the year and will go into the beginning of 2021 and absolutely saved the end of 2020 for me. while neither of these are finished, both have been excellent so far and worth starting. uncanny counter has the best use of the found family trope i have ever seen. i fucking love the four counters and their relationship with each other, how protective they are of one another. they all have amazing chemistry and the actors have amazing chemistry in the making films.

run on has one of the cutest couples that will definitely make my best chemistry list for next year. i didn’t put them on this list bc they actually haven’t gotten together yet but once they do, they’re gonna be freaking adorable, i can already tell. there’s no specific grand events propelling the plot forward, but just following the lives of these unique, interesting and relatable people who have casual yet entertaining conversations with each other. the show is super soft and the main couple are so straightforward and honest (plus theres mutual pining!!)

Basic Training

This post has been sitting in my drafts for months now, during which I've come up with a few ways I wanted to write this post. This is what I've come up with.

Basic Training is the episode which made me hate Ben the most. The whole episode consisted him of being a stuck up brat only to be rewarded for it in the end.

This episode was the perfect opportunity to have Kevin in the spotlight and show how skilled and smart he is.

Gwen's presence in this episode was actually fine, there's no change needed for that.

Look, I know the shows named Ben 10 but we have seen Ben be the hero tons of times already.

And Ben being egoistic about his heroism is not something new in the franchise.

There have been episodes on the OS where Ben got a big head, yet I dont ever see anyone complaining about that.

Was is it because he was 10 that we excuse this behaviour? Nope.

15 - 16 is still pretty young and his attitude can be excused at this age as well.

My opinion? It was handled better in the OS.

There were times when Ben wasn't always the main focus.

In Lucky Girl, Ben has his ' who's your hero?' Moment.

They showed Gwen feeling jealous and hurt by the fact she wasn't noticed much.

It was realistic.

Then the epsiode proceeded to focus on Gwen , having Ben being kind of like a sub plot to the story.

Towards the end Ben compliments her.

So yeah Ben got big head, but at the same time they shifted focus so that the audience wouldn't find it annoying.

Gwen was in the spotlight for a bit, giving people a break from Ben.

Secondly , in Be Afraid Of The Dark, Ben again is shown to be slightly stuck up, but towards the end of that episode he learns and acknowledges Gwen and Grandpa for help and understands his crime fighting is more of a team effort.

In Galactic Enforcers, we are shown there are other heros besides Ben as well.

Ben wasn't the sole focus of that episode. Yes it was about him but also about the Galactic Enforcers.

I don't think he was shown to be over confident here , but it was nice to see some other heros in the scene.

The Ben 10,000 episode focuses on how Ben was too focused on his job and the lesson at that was Ben needed to relax and have them Galactic Enforcers take the lead instead.

Again , his attitude towards everything was brought in focus but towards the end he learnt something.

I recently started watching Generator Rex and I can't help but compare Rex's character to Ben's.

Rex is also proud , rushes into things and considers himself to be a hotshot. But they also show him being down ,having trouble with his nanites and actually voice out his insecurities.

He's still the hero, still has things go his way most times but it's not annoying like Ben.

( I've only seen like 7 episodes so far so I don't know if this going to go down hil or not but so far so good)

The issue with the sequels after the OS was that Ben was the focus a bit too much.

We as the audience were rarely ever given a break from him.

Other than a few conversations here and there about his attitude, nothing really was done about it.

Gwen should've been appreciated more for saving Kevin and Kevin should've been appreciated for stopping Aggregor.

But they weren't.

If it had been Ben , they would've made sure to show him getting some sort of recognition or trophy.

Back to the Basic Training episode.

We know he's the legendary Ben Tennyson, we know he's a hero. We didn't need another episode on it.

Instead the plot should've focused on Kevin. His skills, his abilities.

Ben would act the same but Magsiter Hulka should've put some sort of cover so Ben couldn't use the omnitrix.

Ben goes on breaking rules, and having a hard time being a hero without the watch.

Towards the end, it should've been Kevin who cracks the case and saves Hulka. Ben is mad he can't use the omnitrix but instead uses the guns and other weapons he's learnt to use at the academy

He's not amazing at them , but it makes him realise that he is hero , watch or not, something that has been emphasised in the show. Its not impossible for him to function without the watch.

Towards the end, Ben getting a 95 was a stretch. I'm sorry , but the guy wasn't great with using weapons and without the watch I dont think he would've been able to complete that hostage excercise.

I'm thinking more like 89%.

Gwen gets 98, that's fine and Kevin gets a 100.

Hulka comes in and awards the medal (?) to Kevin, suggesting he's becoming more like his father.

( im ignoring the ret con, plus the retcon I'm assuming wasnt thought off at this point by the writers)

Ben is shown to take one of the guns back to earth, because he thinks they're cool and he wants to practice and get better at them.

The whole hostage situation makes him want to get better at making strategies.

Yes he's good at improv, but he needs to learn to properly plan as well.

It doesn't matter if he's never shown to use the gun ever again, and he's back to relying on the omnitrix.

Or maybe some time down the line, he could use the weapon, even if it for a second, to show that he is improving and getting better.

Before you say 'he's already a hero, he doesn't need to learn anything ' sorry but no.

He's 16. He may have saved the world but he still has growing up to do. Different battles are going to arise all the time.

Saying he is perfect at 16 is dumb. Saying he's perfect when he's ben 10k , it'll make some sense. He's been around for a while and is pretty experienced.

The watch is a part of him, but seeing him try to explore other options would've been a fresher idea.

Another scene that made me mad was the court (?) scene in Vreedle, Vreedle.

Ben being a hero shouldn't make him above the law.

Domstol ruling in favor of Ben just because he's the legendry Ben Tennyson was stupid.

After Ben's little monologue , and destroying Domstols desk, the judge should've just informed him that being a hero does not excuse him from following the law.

Kevin could've had his little moment doing some negotiation ( would've been nice to see how he works as con artist) and Ben could've jumped in and helped while making some good points for the argument, showing us he's not stupid.

Then having Domstol rule in their favor would've made sense.

On the way back to earth there could've been a joke about how Ben watches Judge Judy too much which is where he learnt about trials and stuff. Or maybe Gwens dad taught him a thing or two at some point.

All this doesn't mess with Ben's character all that much, he's still the hero of the show, he still has his ego but it makes him more likeable, shifts focus from his attitude, and shows us he's pretty smart and is growing into a good hero.

Ben's not a bad guy. I mean he is the hero of the show. There are tons of scenes which show he's good , like the whole sacrificing thing so the ultimates could live and all.

But little scenes here and there tend to be enough for someone , especially for someone who isn't a super hard-core Ben lover to form negative opinions on him.

Although calling him a psychopath / narc is out of line because I don't find him to be like that. His attitude was magnified by him being in the spotlight too much and writers not having a good balance in writing situations.

Ben being the main character of the show is at risk of becoming hated or less appreciated just because he's the font runner of the show.

Admit it, side characters tend to get more love most times than the main agonist of shows.

I've been watching videos on YouTube on this topic as to why this happens , and what I've come up with is that writers of shows tend to focus too much on main character. Things seem to go their way most times and this tends to get on peoples nerves, consciously or subconsciously because it's not exactly realistic.

Having shows where everything focuses on one person most times tend to backfire.

I don't mind Ben having a big head, I dont mind him making jokes and being so casual.

It's his defense mechanism to protect himself from drowning into the struggles and pressures of being a hero. But always having him be that way isn't good.

The writers should've executed it properly.

( okay this post got really long, more than I thought it would. If you're read the whole things , congratulations on making it here lol.

I'm not going to stop anyone from replying to this because everyone has different opinions and we all have the freedom to express them.

Although I believe I've made my point and I've made sure to keep in mind all the arguments about why bashing Ben is wrong when he's not a bad guy while typing this out.

I don't think I've directed any major hate towards him , its mostly towards the writers for making the situations like that,but if you think I have you can reply to it.

I'm not gonna reply back though , because again I feel I've made my point.

Mairimashita! Irumakun s2 ep11

Alright... this is late again lol. There’s more than 15 images gonna be on here, I think. Like 2 or 3 more which usually causes errors if I try uploading that much but the twewy finale post miraculously handled more than 20 so maybe it’ll be fine.

This episode has 2 parts!

The exams are finally over and everyone is worried about their grades. Kalego-sensei very disappointedly tells them that... they all passed! He was hoping they won’t lol.

Some of the students ranked up because of their exam results and Iruma got praised for being the one to have improved a lot. While everyone is celebrating, Azz tells Iruma this all happened thanks to him. Iruma is confused as to how and Asmodeus tells him that the others saw how hard Iruma was working on studying that they got inspired to work hard to. Iruma is amazed by this information.

(While I do appreciate Azz being a one-man cheer squad for Iruma, I do hope he doesn’t inflate the guy’s ego too much cause it feels like it’s actually slowly happening and it scares me cause in other stories, such a thing would be a red flag signaling something bad happening. That’s just me though.)

Iruma runs off to look for Baram-sensei so he could tell him about the exam results and the stuff Azz said. He bumps into the guy on the way and sees that Sensei is now sporting a new haircut. (I think he looks better this way. More teacher-looking.)

Sensei is happy to know Iruma’s hard work paid off and spins the boy around happily. Iruma thanks him for all his help but Sensei said Iruma did his best and it’s why the results were good.

He gives Iruma a congratulatory present which made Iruma panic a little as he recognized the plant as a salamander flower. This made Sensei happy as this meant Iruma’s studies were successful and that the boy could recognize these stuff now. All of these knowledge would help Iruma survive living in the Demon World which is what Sensei wanted. He then mentions the flower he’s holding is made safe.

They talk a bit and Iruma tells him about Azz’s observation. Sensei then tells Iruma about why he changed his hairstyle. He says it’s to make himself look less scary so he could try and get along with other people. Iruma asked if it was because of him that he wanted to change (like Azz said earlier about how he affects people) and Sensei answered that it’s not exactly the case. It was thanks to Iruma that he wanted to change because Iruma’s words had a good impact on him especially cause he knew Iruma was sincere and not lying.

On the way back, Baram-sensei passed by Kalego-sensei who immediately notices the hairstyle change. Kalego-sensei laughs a bit and says he’s glad that Baram-sensei’s new hairstyle made him look more regal as it fits their ranking. It is now revealed that only the two of them in the school have the khet rank which is the 8th highest.

It’s also revealed what Baram-sensei’s ability is: Buzzer. He can tell when people are lying and could detect when someone is cheating which is why it’s impossible for students to cheat on the exams. He has the entire school covered, too and will immediately have any cheater caught.

Iruma and friends had their mini celebration for passing the tests by the way! Iruma asked where their Senpai is and Asmodeus informs him that the guy got caught cheating and is now taking remedials.

On the 2nd part of the episode, Ameri is waiting for Iruma so she could hold a mini celebration of her own as Iruma passed the tests but Clara shows up instead to tell her the bad news: Iruma had been dragged by the others to their own happy get-together at a karaoke... er, screaming room.

We then see the boys having fun and one is singing season 1′s OP!

Ameri reads Iruma’s text apologizing about not being able to come. She’s disappointed but she understands although she’s confused as to why Clara had to show up to tell her about it when Iruma could just text her like he had actually done. Clara then drags her, alongside the tea and snacks she prepared for Iruma, and brought her to the other girls.

Awkward.

They decide to do an introduction to start things off. Elizabetta also decided to finally talk to the popular Student Council President and ask a question she had been wondering: what shampoo does Ameri use? This started their little convo about shampoo and conditioner.

After Kerori tells what she uses, she remembers the commercial she did for said products (lol she’s sponsored) and is embarrassed. Ameri sees this and is confused as to why Kerori looks like she’s panicking.

Clara reveals that hers is soap. She uses just soap on her hair and body and everyone is surprised and kinda horrified by this information. They offer to give her some extra shampoo they have so she could try them out next time.

Meanwhile, back to the boys! It’s Iruma’s turn to sing and he can’t just say no. He worries as he doesn’t know any song... except one.

He then chose to sing the Kuromu song he sang with the idol last season - complete with dance! Everyone cheered on and sang along as well! No one suspected anything and just thought that Iruma is probably just a big Kuromu fan.

Back to the girls... it's time for the inevitable: talks about romance!

Elizabetta asks who they all like and Clara didn't miss a beat and answers "Iruma-chi". Ameri is shocked and also worried since she now realizes she has a rival who is closer to Iruma than she is (and one who is more feminine than her to boot!).

When it’s Kerori’s turn to answer, she suddenly remembered Iruma in his evil cycle (being the cool edgy boy that he is). Ameri is internally pissed and is wondering how many other girls might be into Iruma.

She is then reminded of a scene from the manga Iruma reads to her and realizes she can now relate to the female rival lol.

Hang in there, President! You’re better than this haha.

Everyone then continues with the love talk and assumes Ameri probably has some romantic experience with her being popular and all and asked for advice. Ameri, not actually having any and not exactly knowing what to say just answered the only things she know: stuff she’s read from a shoujo manga.

Kerori on the other hand is confused. Is it that hard to get a guy’s attention? In her experience as an idol, even just smiling at a guy would get them to like you. after all.

Clara later mentions how she likes Iruma... and everyone. Ameri then had to ask for clarification and explains the “like” they've all been talking about all this time is romantic in nature. To explain, it’s like wanting to marry Iruma.

Clara’s imagination quickly went to work and she thinks of her wedding with Iruma. Here’s a cute picture of Clara realizing her feelings lol.

Kerori and Elizabetta starts arguing about the whole marriage thing. Kerori thinks they’re too young to even think of marriage (yeah, like, aren’t they all 14-15?) and Elizabetta thinks that it doesn’t matter cause love is love. Ameri gives her own perspective and says proposal and being engaged first would be good (and she thinks of Iruma). In the middle of their argument, they wonder why they all suddenly got aggressive about this. It is revealed (to the audience only) that it’s the effect of the relaxing tea. They’ve become too relaxed that they were able to say what’s on their minds easily.

They finally calmed down later that afternoon and realized they actually had fun and got along. Ameri then tells them that if she’s not on student council duty, they may call her by her name which made the others happy. The girls exchanged phone numbers afterwards.

This episode is pretty peaceful. I like all the little things that happened and the conversations that let us learn a bit about many characters. The boys having fun at the karaoke was nice to watch and the girls becoming friends is so cute!

So, I usually don’t really mention the “Interval” chibi segments of the show but the one for today’s episode gave a bit of behind the scene at something. Eiko, the girl who has a crush on Iruma (and Ameri) wanted to help Iruma study so she did what she could: she herself studied and made easy to understand reviewers. She had Asmodeus pass them onto Iruma (in a past interval segment, the two became friends due to their shared love of Iruma).

Come exam results, Eiko got really high marks from all the studying she did for Iruma’s sake. :)

Nothing too intense happened this time around so this is pretty short. If I had known I wouldn’t get errors, I would’ve gotten a few more screenshots. I wonder what the next arc is gonna be like though?

I haven’t had a lot of birthday parties per se, but my 23rd birthday (this year) was pretty memorable. My mom isn’t a skilled cook so she’s mixed some stuff up before that...aren’t traditionally mixed together, I guess? like they’ve never tasted bad but a lot of them have also not made sense. For the most part it’s the fact that I have work and I hate being absent. The longest I've gone without sleeping is... Maybe a little over 24 hours. A crazy thing I did once was... Putting a finger onto an iron that just so happened to be plugged in. If I could spend the day with any athlete, I'd spend it with... Mick Foley. My favorite age I've been so far... 23 has been fun. 1. How did you first get into the series?

oh i got into it soooooo long ago. i have baby videos of me and my brother opening the cars in 2003 lol. we collected them and watched WR way back then and eventually watched Acceleracers when it was on CN. we had lots of those cars too, along with the card game, but its been mostly lost too time.. still have a couple though!

(looking at the date, this is July 9th, and the movie came out in episodes on CN only a few days after!)

But i guess i could say, i got back into it recently. it was mostly i think, my brother found our old WR DVD. he also found a sealed holographic covered VHS of WR at good will. kind just kickstarted my interest as he and his friend rewatched it, which made me wanna rewatch it. and then i infected all my IRL friends that i could at the time lol. this was like... yeah i have had this blog since 2018, so early 2018!

2. What do you like most about the series?

i like this its such a weird concept that can be done well. racing is fun, cool, high speed- throwing it into a more fantasy setting is cool too, its not just real people driving realistically. all in all its a great concept i havent seen done before, i think was just held back by the intention to get money quick and the fact it wasn’t backed by a studio that wanted to see it all the way through no matter what.

15. Random headcanon/theory about [insert character/faction/event/etc]?

i have a couple i think i tag with “headcanon” but heres a half headcanon half theory? no body pays attention to the comics. but i hc/theorize Gelorum tries to recruit Taro Kitano to work with her possibly before Kurt Wylde.

this is based around comic 31, which i have uploaded myself bc its so interesting (also yes Lau look way better in the comics too). sadly the plot of this comic didnt carry through to the movie (most of the comics did not) but it shows Harrison Lau being recruited by Gelorum. BUT in one panel, which i cannot tell if its an error or not, shows taro as Gelorum speaks of recruiting drivers. i cant tell if they fucked up and Lau is supposed to be there, or if its a sort visual hint to drivers she asked to join her (zed at the top, taro to the side)

Regardless, im making it a headcanon/theory. Gelorum tried to recruit Taro but he did not accept, then she went to Kurt- he was a second choice (maybe out of the fact his personality was more...wild than Taro’s lol. Taro wouldve dont the work well if he actually wanted to be bad). Lau was also such an interesting character in the comic. makes me sad.

17. If you could design a realm of your own what sort of theme would it have?

Oof lots of ideas... i feel like a realm that wouldve been cool to see, was one with a little more puzzle solving, but in a way that worked with racing (not like, getting out of the cars to solve shit). Rubik’s cube realm or something. Tracks that need to be driven on in a certain order and connected by a pattern like colors, shifting the entire realm which would eventually reveal a track to the portal out. Of course it would be. very tense considering the time limit but still, would’ve liked to have see something like it!

18. If you could change anything about the story, what would it be?

i feel more like... if i could add anything, what would i add, cuz i think so much of what i feel it doesnt do well is just stuff not being expanded on lol. but i will stick with the idea of just changing what exists and not adding to it. if i were to do that i would... change how teku and MM are set up and/or change marky and kurt- like change/swap their arcs. while i wouldnt wanna make kurt “bad” for a second time, i feel like all his development in WR that couldve impacted him or influenced the story, was totally lost in Acceleracers. i know im not a huge fan of Marky going completely jerk in Acc but i really really would wanna change that whole set up lol, and changing them along with the teams would be fitting.

Here be my Voyager Finale thoughts, beware:

I first saw this show as a ten year old, circa 2005. My Dad had returned from a work trip with three DVDs- Season 4 of Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: First Contact (The TNG movie), and set of Borg themed episodes from TNG/VOY/DS9 (I think? I never watched them lol). I remember watching the First Contact movie clearly, just as I remember my Dad handing me the Borg themed DVD and telling me to watch VOY 3x26/4x01- Scorpion Part 1 & 2. He thought I would really like B’Elanna. (Clocked!)

I watched all of the VOY episodes, including Dark Frontier (Staring little Seven of Nine!!!), and of course, Voyager’s finale- Endgame. I had no context of the first three seasons at all, or even the non-Borg episodes, which no doubt colored my perception.

But I remember- so clearly, how much I loved it. I loved the time travel aspect, of Admiral Janeway deciding to go back and bring her crew home again. I remember being more or less introduced to Harry Kim via Captain Kim from the Endgame timeline, I remember loving Tom and B’Elanna and their grown up daughter, being scared of the Admiral, not really knowing who Neelix was (lol).

And that was all had of Season 7 for so long! I luckily got season 5 and 6 when I turned 12, and watched those episodes, and luckily, caught so many reruns on Spike TV. I didn’t get season 4/7 until later, and just got the first three seasons for Christmas last year.

I didn’t have a chance to watch the show all the way through until I was a sophomore in high school. My best friend had introduced me to the golden age of Youtube- that is to say, back when people could upload any tv shows they wanted onto youtube, if only in 15 minute chunks. (We watched the Canadian cartoon “Braceface” that way, fun fact!) And then, I got lucky enough to find a channel that had uploaded every episode of Voyager to YouTube.

So, I spent the second half of my sophomore year of high school watching the show. It was the first live action show I sat down and watched this way, going through each episode in order, one and night (I was so good back then. I miss that self-control!). So I watched it!

I remember getting to know all of the characters, to see them from the messy beginning of Starfleet and the Maquis, watching Kes and Neelix and the EMH grow up and into their characters. I remember loving the whole show- but finding myself preferring the later half, even then. I do remember being so surprised that C/7 only expressed romantic interest in the last bit of season 7, I remember even then, not liking the twist of their relationship at all.

Now, I am a decade older! I have finally rewatched the entire thing, and overall, my impression has changed, I think for the better!

I love the earlier seasons a lot more than I had before- there’s plenty to criticize, don’t get me wrong- but they have a charm to them. Watching the two crews get used to each other, watching them get used to their place in the DQ, watching the characters slowly come together- there’s something very satisfying about it now. I particularly love season 3, far more than I used to.

The second half of the show- it might be a mixture of nostalgia and honest improvement, but I still think it’s incredible. Season five remains my favorite, but I am shocked, really, at how close season seven came to challenging that. There are very few duds in the last season, and despite alot of what I hear from people online about the finale, I don’t think it’s a dud! I think it’s great!

The last few episodes really hit some of my favorite Voyager premises really well. Friendship One mixed a good old fashion Voyager episode in the caves with a good moral dilemma. Natural Law had Chakotay crash a shuttle. Renaissance Man let B’Elanna run around fix the ship and had the Doctor do something funky with his matrix, and really showed how much his relationship with Janeway had grown.

Then there was Endgame. I associate Voyager with two Star Trek tropes primarily- time travel and the Borg. Think of the show’s greatest hits- Year of Hell, Scoprion, Timeliness, Unimatrix Zero, Before and After, Shattered, Future’s End- lots of time travel and Borg! Endgame takes them both to an extreme- Kathryn deciding that getting the crew home at all wasn’t good enough, and instead, she had to get them home earlier. Despite what the Admiral told the Captain, she was already embracing being reckless again- who could call that plan anything but reckless! And the Borg might not have been at their most terrifying, but the discovery of a transwarp conduit is an overwhelming draw for the Voyager crew.

It was a good mix! I think that’s not the problem. If anything, I think the premise needed more time. I had forgotten the Admiral doesn’t even get there until the second part of the two-parter, and really, how much time was taken up by her talking with the Captain.

I would have give the episode more room to breathe- made it a threeparter. And I would have forced Kathryn to come to terms with her feelings for Chakotay, and force her and Chakotay and Seven to really have it out. (Ideally, there would have been no C/7 at all, but what can we do!) I think the episode plays it out in interesting ways- showing Kathryn at Chakotay’s grave, showing the admiral react more to Seven than Chakotay- but there’s the unspoken realization of the narrative that sending the ship home might break them up entirely.

The interesting scene where Seven tries to dump Chakotay shows the writers had considered it- but they didn’t go through. Instead, Chakotay doubled down, told her he didn’t want to end it. It of course, being a relationship that is four dates old, built on a premise that Seven didn’t share with Chakotay (the hologram program) and interestingly at odds with the EMH confessing his love to Seven just an episode before. (Why? why did that happen? Why wasn’t the peak of the EMH’s confessions just that he’d kissed Tom in B’Elanna’s form? I think that would have been funnier lol).

I know so much of C/7′s role here to simply not be J/C, but the entire premise of the episode is that Seven dies, Chakotay pulls away from Kathryn, dies young, and she sort of loses her mind and tries to time travel to fix it. It’s almost unspoken how much of the premise rests on J/C (romantically or platonically).

I think the end of the show would have been stronger if they’d started to play with J/C either post Shattered or post Workforce. It would have shown Kathryn finally coming to terms with the length of their journey, of finally letting her shields down and letting Kathryn peek out underneath the Captain Janeway armour.

But it wouldn’t have worked with the finale! So I, a J/C shipper and a Endgame fan, is stuck here, not being able to connect the two.

The other idea I had, was to make the show’s run tighter, and have this episode at the middle of season 7, and spend the rest of the season fighting battles with the Starfleet brass to let the Maquis keep their commissions and stay out of jail- to fight for the Doctor’s rights, for Seven’s right not be locked up in a lab somewhere, to let Neelix (he should have made it Earth! I’m still sad!) walk freely. I think the show spent so long in the beginning getting the crews to integrate- it would have been nice to see that come to head.

Instead there’s very little Starfleet/Maquis content in the finale at all. B’Elanna and Chakotay don’t even get to interact! (All of his scenes are with Seven. I’m not bitter (I am) but he has other relationships!)

I still love the finale overall. It would take a lot to make me mad at episode where B’Elanna finally gives birth and Harry gives a little speech about the importance of a journey (which i copied down in my journal as a child word for word. true Harry Kim Stan). They get home! Really, that’s what mattered.

And now, I get to watch Star Trek: Prodigy! A show I didn’t have as a sixteen year old, or even the six year old I would have been when the show was actually ending. I do get to see what comes next. Which is exciting, and takes a bit of the edge off.

So- The finale’s good, I love it. Could have been better, but that’s life. Paramount Plus just needs to slip me J/C and I can forgive everything. lol

Secondly, moving countries is great you should try if you ever get a chance. I've always wanted to do that and jumped in on the first opportunity I got to make that dream come true, and I recgozine how lucky I am to be able to do so. A nightmare for everyone else but it would be hilarious for us I just know it would haha... I don't cheat at games I am just ridiculously competitive and can't stand losing unless it's something like a video game I am okay with losing those but board games I can't stand losing and I am also a terrible winner my roommate won't play games with me anymore!! Like seriously amazing!! I would love to see some medieval fan art for Damie!! I have been sent a few medieval prompts for Damie and I have started writing some of them but it's taking time to actually get full chapters together but once I have and once I have more time from wrapping up other WIPs I'll make a start on editing and uploading those because medieval stuff is always great!! It's been good thank so far today I went to a little beach town with my mum, 2 of my sisters their partners and two of my nieces (my cool niece was one of them… not that my other niece isn’t cool but you know what I mean) and me, my two brother in laws, and my nieces all played a game of crazy golf while my mum and sisters went to a cafe and had cups of tea... they didn't wanna play with us but we still had fun while we played (I came second which I was very happy with)!! HAHAHAHA THE 24 HOUR NOTIFICATION- i think i have around 1030 hours on sims? but i've had it since 2019 lmao (reading the screenshots, yes u are 100% a genuis, i take screenshots too but on anon you can't upload them so i just read them and retype what i wrote lmao) i think the university experience in the game is fun, but time consuming and it's all work imo. idk why i do it so often tho 😭😭😭

and agreed!! when you're making good money in the game you have to find other ways to make it interesting. my cousins who play it just continously do "motherlode" and i'm like.... then what do you do in your game?? it just sounds boring to me... my current sims household, i had a famous comedian sim, her name was dylan, aND SORRY IM LAUGHING SO HARD WHILE WRITING THIS BC ITS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THE UNI THING UNLESS IM JUST DUMB, she went to college for communications when i wanted her to be a comedian and when she graduated i realized that degree did nothing for the career 🥲 so yeah, i think i'm just dumb. but she had a kid in college, guy didn't stick around and she was pretty broke HA but then she got married to this (great) guy named steve, made good bank, had 5 more kids (two sets of twins and one more lol) but then she passed. uhm... yeah that's still an open wound . lol i'm kidding, but when you get rich like that, you have to find a way to make the game interesting and i chose a million kids.

i used to be one of the people who‘d just do motherlode motherlode motherlode and just... what did i do? Why did i do that??? But not anymore lol.
