How to get a Work (Z) Visa for China (if you’re a North Carolinian)

Okay so if you’ve been following along, you know I’ve been working on getting my visa since about April.

It was a real struggle with lots of road blocks and setbacks. So, I’ve decided to outline the process and linking all the documents I needed to get the work (Z) visa for China.

Now keep in mind, each state has different requirements and the documents I link will only work for residents of North Carolina. Some of the steps will be the same for everyone applying for a visa through the DC embassy. If you apply for your visa at a different consulate you may have different steps involved. I’ll try and highlight where I know the steps are different, but as I’m not a professional at this and my knowledge is only based on my experience, please don’t get mad if the process is different for you. I’ll also link to the websites that helped me figure out everything I needed.

This process takes about 4 months, so plan accordingly. It is also expensive, so be prepared. I used mychinavisa.com for my courier service, but feel free to research others and see if you can find a better price.

First Steps

Get hired in China for a position that tells you to apply for a Z visa.

Make sure your passport has at least 6 months past the day your contract would end before it expires. If not, renew your passport. Also, make sure you have blank visa pages.

You will need recent (taken in the last 6 months) 33mm x 48mm size photos of you, no glasses, no hair in face, no smiling, white background, and no jewelry. Get passport sized photos taken at your post office, Walgreens, rite aid, etc. Trim them down to the required size (if you use a courier service they’ll most likely trim them for you).

You will need three documents to confirm your eligibility to work in China. These are: a foreigner health exam, your diploma, and a background check.

For the background check, check with your contact at your job and make sure a State Background check is okay. For me it was. (NC Residents) Fill out this form called a Right to Review: and take it to the State Bureau of Investigations in Raleigh to get your finger prints done. Then you must mail the fingerprint card, a certified check or money order with the fee ($14), and the form. You can’t just drop these off even though it is the same office. Wait for your background check to come in the mail.

For your health exam, you will need this form. Take it to your doctor and have them fill it out. You will need blood work done make sure you get them all (two vials of blood taken, sorry guys). For things not normally covered by a yearly physical (like the chest x-ray/ECC), just write NA. For the “seal” or “stamp” just ask the doctors office to use the stamp they use for mail or something that looks legit, just tell them China likes stamps. You will need to add one of those photos to this form.

Notarization

Okay, so now you have these three documents. You now need them to be notarized.

If you got a state criminal background check as suggested above, congratulations it is already notarized. Check that off the list.

Alright. So in North Carolina, you need to get a COPY of your diploma notarized. For the love of all things holy, please do not send China your real diploma.

Make a high quality photocopy of your diploma.

Print out a true copy form. DO NOT FILL IT OUT YET.

Take the form and the photocopy to a notary. Fill out the form and sign it in the presence of the notary.

Notary does their thing. Pay them.

Staple this document to the front of your diploma copy.

For your completed health form.

Print out an affidavit form. DO NOT FILL IT OUT YET.

take the affidavit form and the health form to a notary. Put the county you’re in, your full name, and in the 1. space write “ Physical Examination Record for Foreigner”. Draw a line from the edge of the page to cross out the 2. space, continue this line to the other side of the page. (This way nothing else can be added to this line). Sign your name.

Notary does their thing. Pay them.

Staple this document to the front of the health form.

North Carolina Secretary of State Authentications

Now you need to get your notarized documents authenticated by the NC Secretary of State.

Fill out the cover letter form and print it.

Acquire a prepaid envelope for return.

Decide how you’re going to pay.

I took mine in person to the Secretary of State in Raleigh. Take the cover letter, the three documents, and your return envelope, pay at the desk. OR Mail all these items to the Secretary of State in Raleigh.

Your documents will come back to you with the authentication attached to the forms. DO NOT dismantle or detach in anyway or they’re no longer valid.

US Secretary of State Authentications

Ok, so because we live in NC we get an extra step here. Our documents have to be further authenticated. (If you’re not from NC but your consulate is DC for applying to the visa, you will have to do this step too.)

Fill out this form accordingly and print.

Write a check for the fees ($8 per document)

Get a prepaid return envelope (not Fedex)

Mail these the envelope, check, forms, and previously notarized and nc authenticated documents.

your documents will come back to you with another authentication document attached to the front. DO NOT dismantle, detach in anyway or they’re no longer valid.

Chinese Embassy Legalization

The Chinese embassy does not allow mail-in orders for document legalization. You will either need to go in person or use a courier service. I used mychinavisa.com

fill out this form in all caps and single sided

make a photo copy of your passport information/photo page

fill out this order form for mychinavisa.com

follow the instructions on the order form and choose how you will pay and how you want your documents returned to you. I paid the 29$ return shipping fee and then it is $99 for first document and $59 for second and $59 for third.

mail the three documents, the photo copy of your passport, and the order form to the correct office indicated on the order form.

Work permit

Alright, now you need the work permit. Scan all these documents and send them to your contact in China along with any other information they need. They will apply for a work permit for you. Make sure you do not detach any of the pages while you’re scanning the documents. Don’t worry if its awkward or not perfect. The way the pages are attached is annoying as hell. You’ll bring these documents with you to China. My university also needed a recommendation letter, a photo, location of where I was born, my birthdate and a few other things.

When you get your work permit, make sure everything is filled out and no blanks are empty.

Applying for Z Visa

Okay you did it we got this far. Time to apply for the visa.

You need:

Your passport

a photocopy of your passport

those photos i mentioned way earlier

a filled out visa application (you’re applying for a single entry 30 visa, most likely. The dates on the work permit will help you choose the right one, and when in doubt ask your contact in China) (again all caps and single sided)

and the work permits (english/chinese version) that you received from your hiring institution.

Again you can go to DC and do this your self in person, or use a courier service. I used mychinavisa.com again. Fill out their order form and follow their instructions for payment and mailing.

If you aren’t from NC, and you’re following along and adapting this check list and your consulate is Chicago, you’re going to have to apply for the visa in person because they require fingerprinting.

Well hopefully by the end of this list you have a visa, or it has helped orient you to getting a visa. Again, this is for Z visas for work in China. Written for residents of NC because the process was super confusing. Many of the steps might be the same for other states but with the forms being for your state. Just google the secretary of state in state to look for the forms you need.

POLICE REFORM: EMERGE FROM THE DARK

First building to initiate changes is subtitled Sector 1, the next to initiate changes is Sector 2, third building is Sector 3, and so on. Full title for

example would be World Peace Initiative, Sector 1. And At least two beautiful trees should be planted nearby or in the vicinity of every building and if possible, other plants should be around, including small plants on the desks in the offices inside the building and medium plants next to seating and open spaces to give off an aura of life, and discourage the aura of morbidity. World Peace Initiative’s Slogan for all Sectors would be “Peace is a Virtue.” All cars for Sector One would read “World Peace Initiative: Sector 1” and read “Peace is a Virtue.” under those words. The Buildings would exist all over the world, and be interconnected in communication, purpose, peace efforts, and values. No

disciplinary action. The World Peace Initiative for all Sectors, would have two divisions titled D1 and D2, meaning division one, and division two. D1 or D2 should also be on the uniform logo, patch, badges, id’s, hats and anything medium to small size to help people identify the type of responding officers. Dispatchers should be careful to send out the proper responders, suitable to the task. All Uniforms for Sector one would read “World Peace Initiative: Sector 1” and read “Peace is a Virtue.” under those words. And Sector two would read Sector 2 and so on. This would be on the back of all Shirts, Jackets, Coats and anything large enough to remind officers and all people of their purpose. D1 would

be designated for Major crimes such as: Bank Robberies, Mass Shootings, Attempted Murder, Rape and more. D1 officers would be expected to be well equipped for the needed response and would reasonably and naturally have high adrenaline do to the situation at hand, but… should try to remain sharp and focused. D1 ideally should Never be sent out to to respond to D2 related duties! This Is Very Important. Because D1 officers to a certain extent will become conditioned and use to responding to high threat situations. Therefore adrenaline and energy should be appropriated in the right directions, and a pattern should be one that they are used to. That way they can do their

jobs in confidence, and in better aptitude. D2 would be designated for Smaller issues such as: petty theft, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and other minor community issues. D2 would be tasked with conflict resolution, and displaying multipurpose leadership, community advocacy, and stewardship, by maintaining a positive attitude and simply exercising nonviolent, and ideally… nonphysical interaction with people, to resolve small problems within communities. Also an example of nonphysical small crime disciplines is a summons to a respective form of counseling, or giving small to growing fines and fees for disorderly conduct that keeps happening on a reoccurring and

continual basis. If possible, Fines and Fees should be non paper based, and able to be input into an online system. Also If possible, have body cameras linked with facial recognition software, and carry devices for outdoor fingerprint scanning to mainly be used for any persons who may appear drunk or unconscious. D2 officers at the very least should always travel in pairs, and should always be attentive enough to explain if need be, an account of what occurred, and D2 officers may request via communications assistance from D1 officers Only if the situation is suitable for such a request. Otherwise request should not be granted at all. In that case Requests for Additional D2 officers may

be a normal practice if need be. D1 officers should be expected to carry lethal weapons. D2 officers however should not be defenseless and should be carrying nonlethal weapons. All officers should have excellent training that teaches ethical use of weapons, and ethical responses to all situations. Ideally World Peace Initiative Sector cars should not have such disturbing lighting in terms of the color. If it were my choice… the colors would actually be bright green and white flashing lights. Red is a very alarming and disturbing color to have flashing all over the place, and it gives off a aura of imminent danger i feel. Additionally, all cars should have cameras on the front, back and sides of

cars if possible, and very bright white front and back lighting that almost looks like daylight that can be turned on when and where it would be helpful. Cars and all cameras should have sound recording capabilities. Also just as members of a company or job, have ID to identify them, people may “Voluntarily” sign up to receive by mail a Community Member ID issued by their applicable World Peace Initiative, Sector. And Instead of a photo on the ID, the ID could have something of a Qr code or something else on it or multiple things on it, maybe a bar code and bar code number to additionally help Identify the Individuals In or belonging to Communities. Why a Qr code or bar codes and such? because I doubt everyone would want to run in

and have their photo taken, especially people who may want to be somewhat anonymous! However, such ID’s should not replace more important ID’s, such as state ID’s. And the ID’s in no way shape or form should look like the World Peace Officers Sector ID’s. Also, positively interacting with community members and taking down information, suggestions, and notes whenever and however possible would be ideal. World Peace Officer ID’s should have world class design, and be distinctive, and readily recognizable. Also D2 Officers could also make the choice to be representatives, and Influencers of Greener World initiatives by inspiring the planting of Trees, and could

voluntarily help plant trees once a year as an event, that would have a good reflection on the World Peace Initiative Sectors and it’s Officers as a body. However, World Peace Officers should not be forced into any greener world or going green advocacy roles. Reason being… their main focus and purpose should be bringing peace to the communities they serve. There should also be surveys available online under the World Peace Initiative Sector website, that allows individuals in communities to have input on how to handle community problems, and suggestions should be taken into consideration. Surveys should be set up whereas if the community member chooses to do so, they can

answer questions, and give suggestions anonymously. Surveys should also be available on the website while not requiring you to sign up and have an online account just to answer surveys, or give suggestions. And the World Peace Initiative Sectors in their respective locations around the world should have meetings with their Local Community Leaders, Online and Offline. And there should be an online portal similar to that of a online portal that libraries offer to it’s members – for Community Members to sign up If they want to, and interact with the World Peace Initiative Sector and do some reading on what the World Peace Initiative Sector plans are for Peace in Everyone’s Future. And

there should always be areas online that allow anonymous donations, or anonymous feedback, from the community. Why should certain things be anonymous? Because not everyone wants info about them on a website whereas they may feel that their information is not necessarily secure. And also because people may have safety concerns with having an account on a website that is deemed to support safety feedback from communities. And not everyone will care for peace efforts. Some people love discord.

On the subject of physical paper money and silver coins and such… elimination of such should be considered in the world. All forms of payment should be Readily Authentic and able to Identify the person issuing the payment in a payment system. Banks should consider issuing two cards to bank account holders, one card should work similar to paypal and be for storage of small amounts of money for small and quick store runs. And the second bank card would only be discreetly carried by persons, seeking on any given day, to make larger purchases. Also, One should keep in mind that, Harmony and Peace Requires Effort from All Of Us! Texas student getting a student visa to study abroad at the University of Barcelona (2019)

I thought I would write my thoughts and advice on the process in obtaining a Spanish student visa. My process may slightly differ from yours if you’re from another US state and/or if you’re enrolled in a different university/program.

***Quick facts: You only need a student visa if your program is over 90 days. You can only go to the Spanish consulate in your US region and you have to submit your application in person. If you forget something or do something incorrectly, they allow you to send them the missing/incorrect item(s) within a certain time period, though they won’t start processing your visa until they receive everything. My biggest mistake was waiting until 3 months before my intended departure date to book my visa appointment. I read that you can’t submit your application until 3 months prior- however, you can (and should) book your appointment as soon as you get accepted to a program in Spain. When I looked in July for August appointments so that I could leave in September, there was no availability until December. After checking (literally) every hour to see if anyone cancelled, I was able to book an appointment two weeks before my classes were supposed to start. I continued checking often for an earlier appointment, and I decided to email them about my problem. They actually opened a new student visa specific category (before there was only a category for general visas). My advice is to go online and book an appointment scheduled for at least 2 months before your departure date (the visa takes 2-4 weeks to process after your appointment, and you won’t want to book your flight until your visa is approved).

DEALING WITH CONFUSING REQUIREMENTS

You can gather most documents within a day, except the background check and medical certificate- these may take a few weeks, so do those as soon as possible, though not more than three months before your application date. This website contains the list of items you must bring to your appointment:

Make sure to make two photocopies of everything- one for your own records and one for the consulate.

1. Application form- pretty self-explainable. Make sure to glue your photos on two application forms, and sign and date at the end. Then make 1-2 photocopies for them (I made 2).

2. Passport- ensure the expiration date is at least three months past your intended return date.

3. ID- nothing complicated about this.

4. Passport photos- I got 2 photos at CVS for about $16 which I think is ridiculous, but they make sure that the photos meet passport requirements.

5. Acceptance letter- try to include all the little details they ask for. My program did not have a fax number, but it wasn’t a problem for me. You don’t need a signed hardcopy- a digitally signed one is enough.

6. Evidence of funds- for my situation, my parents are financially supporting me. I wrote the following letter (I excluded my mom’s typed name/number/email below the signature line) and asked my mom to sign it.

Then we took it to the UPS store and asked them to notarize it for about $6 (it could have been free at my Wells Fargo bank but they needed me to type certain words, and they were being vague about it). You also need to print out the last 3 months of bank statements of their account, and bring a photocopy of your parent(s) IDs.

7. Health insurance- my university partners with Ferrer & Ojeda, so this is the link I used:

Click on “Viajo a España”, “UB Incoming -> Calcular”, and enter the information. If you’re staying longer than a year, select 365 days. Even though the consulate asks for insurance until the end of your program, it’s not possible to make it longer than a year (at least for this insurance option). You need to register for an account before continuing and making the payment (233 euros for the year). The proof of insurance is simply a 2-page document that you can print, which outlines what the insurance provides for you.

8. Police criminal record- I assume the process varies from state to state and you can figure it out online. To obtain a fingerprint state background check in Texas (also listed are West Virginia, New York, and Colorado), click on this link:

The service code is 11FT12. I was able to book an appointment within the week, and it took less than a week to have my background check mailed to me. Make sure that you request the background check to be notarized. After you receive the document, you will need to get an apostille. In Texas, there is only one Secretary of State located in Austin, which is where you can get an apostille:

No appointment is necessary. If there is no line, it takes less than five minutes for the secretary to stamp your document and process your $15 payment. I paid with a credit card, and they asked me to write down the card information (not sure why since it was in-person that they swiped the card). You can also mail your document instead, along with the items requested (a form stating the country’s name, money, and pre-paid envelope). I emailed them about that option and they sent me the form, but I chose to go in-person because of my time constraints.

9. Medical certificate- the hardest part for me at this step was finding a doctor, since I didn’t have a regular physician. I tried urgent care centers like CareNow, but they refused to sign anything because they didn’t know me well enough. Luckily, I came across this website used for US Citizenship applications:

The doctors listed on this website have encountered legal certificates before so I started calling the ones nearby to see if any accepted new patients and was covered by my insurance. Make sure to explain that you need a signed certificate for your student visa to study abroad in Spain, and that you found them on the USCIS website. I was able to book an appointment that week where they did a check-up and some bloodwork. Then I picked up my signed and stamped certificate within about a week. Here is the sample I used:

10. Minors- (I skipped this because I'm not a minor)

11. Envelope- I went to a US post office and asked for a pre-paid envelope with a tracking number. It was about $25 for a cardboard envelope, a little bigger than the size of a paper (not sure the exact dimensions, but you can fit regular sized printing paper inside). You don’t need to fill out the “From” part because the consulate can stamp their address on it (you can if you want to though). Make sure to fill out the “To” part with your address.

12. Non-US Nationals- (also skipped)

AT THE APPOINTMENT

The office was a little hidden in Houston, but my Uber driver was able to locate the building. I arrived about half hour early just in case. The office was really small- maybe 20 chairs for a small waiting area, and 4 windows to call up everyone with appointments. They didn’t call me until about half hour past my appointment time. I handed them all the documents including my passport, but not the envelope or money, and I went to sit back down while they reviewed my documents. When they called me back up to the window, they said everything was good, so I handed them the envelope and money (I paid with exact cash- you could also pay with a money order). And that’s it!

WAITING FOR MY VISA

They say it can take 2-4 weeks for your visa to be approved and mailed back to you. I think for me it took a couple of weeks before I received the envelope in the mail. It included the documents with the consulate stamp on each one, my passport with a visa page, and a yellow paper telling me to get my residence card within thirty days of my arrival in Spain. When we started this blog, we promised to talk about the good, bad, and ugly of moving to Sweden. There has been a lot of good - see almost every other post on this blog - but today I thought I would discuss something from the “bad” category. That subject - the incredibly inefficient, disempowering process of getting started in Sweden.

This process starts, like with many countries, with the application for a work permit. This part is not bad. Most of the paperwork is done by your employer. However, it is your first taste of waiting for a decision. This typically takes about 10 working days from application to decision. Interestingly, in my case, I was informed that there was a decision before that 10 day point, but I had to wait several more days to find out what that decision was.

The real fun starts once you arrive. To function in Swedish society, you need three basic things. You need a personnummer (an ID number, the equivalent of the US social security number), an ID card, and a bank account.

Almost all things require the personnummer. Healthcare depends on the personnummer, opening a bank account depends on the personummer AND having an ID card, getting basic governmental services, opening a non pre-paid cellphone account, all of that - you need the personnummer.

I mention a bank account. You might ask - can’t you just use a foreign bank account? To some extent, you can, but this is more limited than you might expect. You need a Swedish bank account to get paid, of course, but that’s just part of the problem. Sweden is largely a cashless society, so you can’t really just withdraw some money from an ATM and use that - many businesses won’t take cash. This, hilariously, includes banks. If you have the right kinds of credit cards, you can pay using those. Fortunately, I do. Michelle had some problems with this before I arrived. Even then, because the US does not use a “chip and pin” system, you have to show ID and sign a receipt every time you make a purchase. As you can imagine, this is a slow process, and it is really embarrassing to be the one holding up a line every time you make even a simple purchase. So, you need a bank account as quickly as possible. This depends on having an ID card, which depends on you having a personnummer.

As a foreign resident, there is one additional step in this process. It is not sufficient to just be on file as having a residence permit. You need to have a “residence card”, an ID that only really is used when you cross the border into the European Union. Of course, you need this to get your personnummer. When you arrive, the first thing you need to do is go register for this card and get photographed and fingerprinted. The office where you do this will ask you to book an appointment, but the appointment slots are limited and often booked weeks in advance.

Fortunately, they do allow drop-in... for part of the day. Everyone knows this, so even arriving half-an-hour before opening, I had to get in a line that was already around the block. For the past few years, Sweden has allowed an influx of foreign refugees from the middle east. This has taxed immigration services, but at the same time, Sweden has seemingly not increased their staffing of those services. This has created a mess. Fortunately, I got through in an hour and a half or so. It could have been worst - not many people were there for biometrics that day.

Now, this doesn’t sound that different from the experience of getting an ID in the US. You go to the DMV, you wait, and then you register. However, in the US, you leave with an ID that day. In Sweden, the request for an ID is sent off to some other office, who will mail you the residence ID in about two weeks. Luckily, this also fell on the short end of the scale for both of us - closer to one week than two. Still, here we have a stage where an inefficient process could be simplified - just do on-site ID printing.

Next, you can apply for your personnummer and sign up for the social services register. This involves a trip to the Swedish Tax Agency, the infamous Skatteverket. They are infamous for their lines, and boy, that can be true. I’ve been to visit them twice so far. The second was not so bad. The first... That was a bit of a wait. In any case, you again don’t get a the personnummer that day. You register and... you wait. They tell you this can take up to 14 weeks. In practice, that number is more for those coming from active warzones. Americans seem to get through pretty quickly. I’m on this waiting step now, Michelle’s took something like a week.

Once you have the personnummer, it’s time for your ID card. To order this, you must again visit the Skatteverket. You need to pay about two days before you come for your appointment, and come with proof of payment. You get photographed again, but of course, you then have to wait for the ID to be printed somewhere else. This time, you don’t get mailed the ID. Instead, you have to come back to Skatteverket yet again to pick up the ID. God help you if you don’t have the right paperwork.

Now, finally, you can open a bank account. This, as you can probably guess, involves more waiting. You can’t just come in an open an account. You come in, fill out paperwork, then the paperwork is sent off to some other office who decides - eventually - if you are worthy of a bank account. This can apparently take up to seven weeks during the summer. Oh, and banks are only open 10 AM - 1 PM on weekdays during the summer. Good luck. Again, it looks like we’ll get accounts in a much shorter timeframe than seven weeks, but this is a sharp contrast from the process in the US, where you just go to the bank and open an account on the spot.

Each step of this process depends on the previous step. Each step involves, generally, at least a week of waiting time. All the while, you are waiting to get paid and are unable to fully participate in society. We have had a pretty positive experience here so far. There is a whole lot to love. This process also feels needlessly inefficient and extremely unwelcoming to new residents. During this time, you are powerless, dependent on savings, and unable to move forward on things like getting housing. Lifelong residents don’t notice - they’ve always had a personnummer, or they don’t mind waiting because no one step of this process is unreasonably long. The problem comes from having to complete the entire process at once. This process could easily be improved too. Allow ID printing on-site. Bundle ID and personnummer registration together - you can’t have one without the other. A few minor improvements would make a world of difference.

One tactic is for you to click through to the fake site and try to buy a product, entering your credit card or debit card number. Another way they try to get you is for you to unknowingly download information-stealing software onto your computer.

Where does the search engine part come in? These criminals manipulate Google and other search engines’ algorithms to get their phony sites ranked high in search listings, leading users to believe they must be legit. Fortunately, Google has made progress in preventing this in recent years, but it still happens.

5. Phishing

Phishing is a term that broadly means “fishing” for personal information through a variety of common social interactions — so-called “social engineering.” The most common phishing attack happens when you get an email that looks like it came from your bank or another legitimate company. It may come with an alarming subject line, such as “overdraft warning” or “your order has shipped.” When you click a link in the email, you may see a login screen identical to your normal login, which will trick you into entering your username and password. You could also be asked for more identifying details, such as Social Security number and account number.

Fortunately, banks have put some countermeasures into place to fight phishing. You can also protect yourself by not responding directly to incoming messages. If you get an email that looks like it’s from your bank, type your bank address into your browser instead of clicking the link, sign in, and check your account’s message center. Or just call your bank’s customer service number.

6. Phone Attacks

The Internal Revenue Service has been warning for several years that scammers are calling people claiming to be the IRS, either claiming that they have a refund due or owe money. Fishing for information via the phone is also known as “vishing,” as in, “voice phishing.”

If they’re taking the refund tactic, they’ll probably ask for your bank account number or other personal info, supposedly in order to send you your refund. If they say you owe, they may ask for a credit or debit card number, or worse, try to get a payment in a way that’s not traceable or refundable, like through a prepaid debit card.

This kind of scam is also known as “pretexting,” and the really good scammers make it seem realistic by having some basic info about you on hand before they call, like your address and date of birth, which are pretty easy to find online.

7. Text Attacks

In another twist on phishing, “smishing,” or SMS phishing, sends you a text message encouraging you to click a link that will either trigger the download of malicious software or direct you to input personal information.

8. Fake Wi-Fi Hotspot

Also known as an “evil twin” hotspot, this is a Wi-Fi connection setup in a public place, like a cafe, with a name that leads you to believe it was provided by someone trustworthy, like the cafe owner. The evil twin Wi-Fi hotspot really connects you to the Internet, just like a legit connection. The difference is, the evil twin is provided by a hacker, who uses specialized software to eavesdrop on information you’re sending out — like your bank password or Social Security number — or to direct you to a malicious website like those described above.

When a hacker interrupts your attempt to access a legitimate website and steals the data you’re trying to send, it’s called a “man in the middle attack.”

9. Dumpster Diving

Another low-tech but very effective method is simply pawing through recycling bins, looking for discarded credit card offers, bills, medical records, and other paperwork that could have personal information on it. Not only can identity thieves hit you at home, they could also search dumpsters outside of medical offices, schools, and banks.

10. Workplace Theft

A U.S. Department of Justice survey of convicted identity thieves found that a third of them accessed victims’ information through their jobs. The criminals worked for mortgage companies or at government agencies such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, where they had access to treasure troves of client information. Others lifted information from job applications.

Back in 2000, just one guy was responsible for stealing 33,000 people’s credit reports at his credit industry help desk job. He sold the reports to thieves who, according to news reports, used the information to steal up to $100 million.

11. Burglary

When someone breaks into your home or car, it may not be the loss of your jewelry, cash, or laptop that hurts the most. If they find your credit cards, Social security card, or tax returns — or get such information off a stolen computer — you could be in for severe identity theft.

12. Pickpocketing

Another old-fashioned crime that has thrived in the era of high-tech data theft, pickpocketing nowadays commonly leads directly to identity theft. In fact, a major ID theft ring busted 10 years ago targeted crowded events to steal wallets and convert the information inside to valuable dossiers of information, which they would later resell.

13. Mobile Phone Theft

If you have authorized your phone to make payments on your behalf, saved passwords for banking and retail sites, or saved other personal data on it, having the device stolen could cost you a lot more than the replacement cost. Phones that aren’t password- or fingerprint-protected are most vulnerable.

14. Mobile Phone Account Hijacking

Another form of ID theft targeting phones happens when someone gets ahold of your account information and uses it to order a new phone or line, with the bill going to you.

15. Shoulder Surfing

This technique involves watching over someone’s shoulder as they enter a password at the ATM, or using a camera to steal the information from farther away. This could also be a tactic for getting someone’s phone password before physically stealing the phone.

16. Skimming

This nefarious technique involves stealing credit or debit card information with a card reader that may look just like a legitimate card reader. Skimming devices have been found at gas station pumps, on ATMs, and at retail store registers. Or, waiters in restaurants can put your card through a skimmer when they take it to the back to finalize your bill.

17. Friend and Family Theft

Also known as “familiar fraud,” this crime happens when the ID thief is your child, your parent, even your spouse. Sadly, it’s not uncommon for parents to abuse the identities of their own minor children in order to get credit. In a disturbing story broadcast on This American Life, Rachel Rosenthal couldn’t figure out how her identity thief kept catching up with her, no matter how many accounts she closed — until she realized that the thief lived in her own home and had access to all her mail and documents. It was her boyfriend, who had been “helping” her financially, with money he withdrew from her bank account.

Often, these crimes take place in the context of real relationships, where one party happened to turn on the other party. But there are also crooks out there who look for partners specifically to steal their identities, especially on dating sites and social media.

18. Social Engineering Targeting Companies

You don’t have to work for a credit agency or mortgage bank to get customer information if you are skilled enough to trick employees into giving it to you. Thieves may call an airline, posing as a secretary who needs her boss’s trip information, or call a company pretending to represent a client or supplier. A friendly fast-talker may be able to get employees to skip security protocols and give out information they shouldn’t. Every call the thief makes is a little easier, armed with the information from the last call
