I had report on the Loveless final compiled together from way back on March 28th 2019, so I’ll post it here again to give a small taste....!
●The stage lighting for Namid[A]me was apparently breathtaking, they made it look like it was actually raining, ●Yumao used a real gong for Social Clock. ●During Senseless Wonder yg went all the way over to snd’s side of the stage, stuck his body against his, and they played it out together. Then came the encore MC break.
●Yu started cheering himself on, while making flamboyant poses: "Yumaooooo!!  Oooh~!  WOooooOOah *rough voice* !!💪( >ω <💪)” Crowd: “You’re so cool~!” Yu: “Thank goo~ *Goes to a cutesy voice*” “You’re so cute~!” “Thank goo. Thank you!” SND: “Hey dude, they’re all callin’ ya cute and cool y’know.” Yu: “…(short pause) Thank goooo~~~”
wowaka: (laughing) We’re done, that's all we need for MC ahahaa.
●Leaving members stuck on what to ramble about, they’ve already talked so much throughout the whole tour, what’s left? So wo suggested that they do a re-cap on all those fun boring discussions they’ve had. Omnibus time.
●Back when the Japan was collectively swept off their feet by the Olympic ice skater Yuzuru Hanyu-kun and his performance, wo had also praised him during MC.  Yet just thinking about him puts pressure on Yumao, it inspired Yumao to do his best. And as the next song on Rie’s set list was the inspirational Memai, he concentrated so hard, poured himself in and played super neatly, “Oh shit oh no oh shit, Hanyu-kun makes me nervous.” Yumao explained.
●During the span of the tour SND fell off the stage way more then once... SND: “The skin on my back peeled off once too.” Yu “Eeeh?!” SND “Saying it peeeled all the way off is an overstatement but..” ”Well then the scab ripped off.” “Seriously?!” “But it healed nicely.” “Ahh” “After that, in Niigata, when I went to brandish my guitar up with a “pwooosh” towards the roof, it went bonking into my forehead.” ●SND’s middle finger had also stopped moving, (nerve palsy maybe??) During Talkie Dance there’s the “piropiropiro” where a “pero, pero” bit comes in between (Queue SND and Yuma singing the riff together), which is very straining. He has to press his fingers against the strings one by one to play it, he was scared but nonetheless. So Yuma watched him at the piropero part wondering “Oh no oh no is it gonna move? Is it moving today??””
When it came down to it his middle finger moved for him so thank goodness... (Manju comment: SND is this karma for all the times you gave the crowd the middle finger when they cheered your name,,, or flipped off girls who waved at you, or giving wo the middle finger a lot? God I love you)
●Yumao “Also ygarshy laughed ONCE!” “There was the one time I was talking nonstop (queue SND and Yumao making “blaghblergh” noises together to imitate him). When yga let out a chuckle, which made me super proud in front of everyone… I went Wahooo!!! but turns out it wasn’t because my story was funny or anything.  It was because yga was off on his own! Testing how many candies he could eat before we would shut up!” SND: “Did you chuckle because you finished the third candy?” yg: “Uhhh” SND: “Well tell us about it.” wowaka: “Is this the first time he’s talking?” yga: “See, I always think our encore MCs are… long. So I feel like having some candy. I was originally worried I wouldn’t be able to finish eating one in time, the song would start and turn into a problem, but.... it turned out that day’s had become the longest MC yet. I lost my inner bet, damn it, I thought. You guys really can talk. Three whole candies worth of talk! So I laughed, and Yumao thought I was laughing at hims story”
Yu: “Yeah yeah!! Honestly the story I had been telling didn’t have a punchline, so I just used your laugh as an escape.”
SND “Foolish” Yu “Yep” wowaka “Well that day the most” Crowd “laughing” Yumao “...Thank goo~ (laughing)” (Yumao you never have a punchline I swear to God I love you too)
●wowaka talked about the story from back when he used to be so so scared of standing in front of people. In middle school his teacher chose him to represent his class in the English speaking competition, yet he was so afraid that he just, went out to the podium crying hysterically. “I can’t talk English in front of everyone waghhh....”
But now he’s able to do >this<. He’s become such an adult.
SND “I bet there wasn’t even as many people at the competition as there is people here today, haha and you’re able to even talk naturally here, eh, look at you.”
Yu: “Ahh even SND’s such a big boy now~.” SND: “Well we all have.” ●They announced the next nexUs tour at the Loveless tour final. “We just love doing shows”
●Also Pre- Little Cry Baby emotional speech from wowaka.   “In living we find cool things and sparkling things, yet there’s moments when we betray those things, we worry if ahhh was I wrong with that, there’s so much of this, in actuality that’s all I do, yet still we’re made out of things we can’t throw away, that’s what I think, what is it! Like those sorta texture that have a paint dried over them, like things that are just superficial just… Those are things that I have NO FUCKING  interest in! Like it’s that, c’mON, with music, people are just humans!! trying to be, they’re trying to do what they can do! I have interest in things that only humans can do, some things that can even surpass human, and that’s what fuels me to do music. As long as you follow me, I feel like ,, I could go anywhere!!!!! thank you always, thank you for making me!! Thank you for being here!!!”
This was also the showing they used during the Memorial Service on June 1st… STAFF WE ARE GOING TO CRY “Thank you we were Hitorie, let’s definitely! *through deep breaths* definitely! Meet again!”
Tumblr media
Also some from IKI
●wowaka’s mother came to this show.... As divulged in this interview. THE ORAL CIGARETTES had sent Rie flowers in celebration of the event, which were on display at the venue.... Shiohigari SND’s good friend went, also the Synth player of the band “the telephones” who took the picture that’s featured on this blog) went also! ●Before Shutter Doll Yumao did his signature, Yumao! Yumao! Yumao! cheer on rhythm with the familiar intro, but with “Final! Final! instead. Along with We’re ●Hagure no Color had snazzy band introductions molded in between it. ●wowaka had actually cried during Little Cry Baby..... It really is a song that’s so important to him.... I’m anxious to see the video... ●MC: One was wowaka talking about how thankful he is for everyone and everything about this IKI tour. wowaka “I don’t want it to to enddd!” SND “We’re been on this tour for 4 months, it’s been a long time though, it’s amazing, it’s a new record for us.” wowaka “Now what am I going to do with myself tomorrow.“ SND “Go back to our dark dark life...” wo “Why”
SND “You guys had been waiting outside all this time, how was it, was it cold, are you okay? Further crowd: “We were okay-! Closer crowed “(less voices) We were okay.” SND “So you guys were okay and you were cold, okay (laughing). Well if you were cold, then see this sweatshirt Leader is wearing.. please wear one too That thing is perf.  Crowd: “Woooah!!” SND: “Why the fuck ‘Woah.’ Even if you said you’re okay then still go buy one alright. Thanks..”

18/02/12 - Port Messe Handshake Report
I went to the SKE48 handshake on February 12 at Port Messe, Nagoya. It was my first time at Port Messe and my first kobetsu handshake event in two years.
Tumblr media
I’ll start with Churi. I only had 3 tickets so this will be short.
Tumblr media
Churi’s voice was very hoarse and she warned us about it on Twitter beforehand.
She recognized me when I entered her lane and she told me it had been a long time she hadn’t seen me. I agreed and said I wish I saw her more. I then congratulated her on her role as a voice actress for the new Disney/Pixar movie, Coco. (It’s called Remember Me in Japan) She said thanks and I told her I like Disney so I’m really glad she got that opportunity. She then said she’s happy I also like Disney and asked me to come see her again.
For the second time I lined up before she came to her lane. I was very lucky, as the members lined up near Churi’s lane to announce the April concert as well as the continuation for Musubi no Ichiban. Makiko was the one speaking. Afterwards I met Churi and told her that I miscalculated my tickets and just found out that she’s not going to the Kyoto handshake due to her play. She told me that’s correct and invited me to watch her play in Osaka. I told her I’ll definitely go if it lines up with my school dates.
For the last ticket I told her that unfortunately this is my last handshake of the year probably. (With her at least, since she won’t be in Kyoto) I told her I’d support her as always and come back next year for sure. She kind of nodded but suddenly realized what I had said and yelled “Are you serious!? The year’s just begun and you’re done for the year? What? Why?” I reminded her I’m leaving next month but she still looked visibly shocked.
Churi says she’s having the most fun out of her SKE career right now, but she looked exhausted today. The other fans all said the same thing, and apparently she wasn’t feeling well a week ago. She’s incredibly busy with her acting practice and has to go to Tokyo for it tomorrow. Most members went by plane to Niigata but Churi took a train from Tokyo for the tour since she was doing her practice for Basara.
White privilege definitely exists for idol events. I haven’t gone to that many events and I always buy a tiny amount for Churi at handshakes, but she always remembers me. I spent the day with my fellow Churi oshi from Taiwan, but Churi doesn’t recognize her despite her going to far many more events than me and buying more tickets. I felt like my interactions with Churi went well but my friend had trouble, saying Churi looked exhausted and didn’t say much and they had some trouble communicating. As usual, it was great meeting all the regular Churi oshis. I’ve gotten to know quite a lot of them and I spend my time around her lane bouncing from one to the other. (At least in one of the many Churi factions. I still haven’t talked to the vast majority of fans.)
Tumblr media
Before I talk about Maya, I’ll talk about the other stuff that was going on today during the handshakes.
There was a sales stand for various things. The lines were huge and I thankfully didn’t have to line up in it. My Taiwanese friend bought me these stickers while I was eating lunch. They are called and look like stickers but they are actually the badges from the Muishiki uniforms that you can stitch on a bag. I think I’ll put them on a bag when I get back home. The Maenomeri sticker looks too girly for me but the Chicken Line one looks metal. Shame since I really like Maenomeri (the song) and don’t really like Chicken Line. I’ll probably buy Kataomoi Finally if there’s a next time.
Tumblr media
The biggest thing that happened other than the concert announcement was the unveilment of the third generation draft members. They appeared with Yuasa and Makiko on a stage. I couldn’t get a good view but it was neat. They announced they were going to have a very quick handshake with the D3 members, free of charge. I wanted to go but I didn’t make it in time when I ended my lunch. My friend went and said they were cute.
Tumblr media
Other than that, there were two badminton nets set up to play with the members. I sort of wanted to play but the line wasn’t clearly indicated. I was changing clothes in the washroom and when I stepped up Maya and Yunana were playing. I tried finding a way in but greeted some nearby acquaintances and gave up on it, since they finished playing a few minutes after. I stuck around and saw Nacky, Kumachan, and Rara play. An hour or so later I checked again and Satokaho and Yukina were playing, dressed in Cheongsam. That was quick the sight lol, they were pretty good too.
While I didn’t go to any other lanes, I noticed some of the lanes next to the ones I went to. I was most impressed by Uchiyama Mikoto’s lane. She had a lot of people in her lane despite not being a very popular member. I guess Strawberry Punch has helped her out. As expected, her lane is full of females. Her interactions with her fans is as you’d expect, they look very enjoyable and funny.
In much the same way Yuzuki’s lane looks like a ton of fun. About half of her fans are dressed in baseball uniforms of their favourite teams/players. I don’t follow Yuzuki that much but I was a bit surprised by how little Dragons uniforms I saw. They’re Yuzuki’s teams and yet people were sporting uniforms of all sorts of teams.
Another member who I was impressed by looking at their lane was Arai Yuki. I like Yukichan a lot but I am too cheap to go to her lane. She has a style I like a lot. She’s able to combine looking very sweet and cute with a certain kind of coolness.
Now for Maya, whom I had 30 tickets for.
Tumblr media
For the first meeting I introduced myself. She greeted me with a “Oh, thanks for coming after coming two weeks ago!” before I said anything, so she definitely recognized me. I then told her I recently became her fan and that I’ve been a fan of Churi for about four years now… but that recently I like Maya a lot. She asked me what caused me to become a fan and I told her that seeing her in the theatre really made me like her. She was really happy to hear that and was glad that I got to go to the theatre. I also told her I always comment on her blog and she asked me for my e-name. I said Jaylitt but she didn’t understand so I said it again and she said “Oh! I know you! Thanks!” I’m not really sure if she knew what my name was since I didn’t pronounce it the way a Japanese person would and I think she was trying to be nice.
For the second one I told her I’ll be voting for her in the sousenkyo and I’m trying to work with other international fans for votes. I told her she has about ten or so oshis outside of Japan (that I know at least). She told me she’s very happy to hear that and is looking forward to it. I told her I wrote messages from fans during her seitansai and asked her if she read them. She told me she hasn’t been able to read them yet. I’m not sure if that means she didn’t get them or hasn’t had the time to do so.
The third time was really bad on my part. I picked on a topic and rehearsed it while waiting but when I found myself in front of Maya I totally blanked out and forgot. I didn’t hesitate and instead complimented her on her clothing. I told her it was really cute and nice and suited her. She said she picked it out yesterday night and thought it suited her, so she’s glad I think so too. She told me she always has rather simple outfits but she likes those kinds. I told her I like them too, and that at any rate the colours are nice. She told me that she’ll be wearing her school uniform at the next handshake in Kyoto.
During the next slot (#3), I told her I translate her tweets and blogs and she made this really funny face of surprise. It felt like her facial expression changed 500 times in 2 seconds. She then said my Japanese is really good and that I’m probably better at kanji than her. I told her there’s no way that could be true since I have trouble with it. So she said it’s our common weakness.
It must be redundant by now but I am short. Despite this Maya seems to think my legs are long and she told me she’s jealous. Whenever I enter/leave the handshake booth she notices that my limbs are long for my height. I laughed and asked her why she’s jealous of something like that. She answered that we’re both around the same height and she just thinks having longer legs is nice. I told her that running is my hobby so I put them to good use. She replied that that must be it, running is the reason for my long legs. She told me she’ll try to run to make her legs longer. I told her that might not necessarily true but who knows. Good luck.
I told her I’d probably go to the Kyoto handshake before I go back to Canada and she was very happy. She again told me she’d be wearing her high school uniform and I said I’m looking forward to it. She started dancing a bit and I told her I’m also looking forward to her school uniform gravure that she’s always talking about. She told me she really hopes she can get that done before graduating.
When I returned she remembered I said I was leaving so she asked if this was my last handshake ticket and asked me again when I’m leaving. I told her again that I’m leaving next month and that I’d probably go to Kyoto before leaving in March. She realized that I already said that but she told me she’s happy that I’m staying a little while longer and can make another event.
My first communication problem happened. I asked if she had any orders (meirei) for me for when I go to Canada. I have a hard time pronouncing the r sounds in Japanese so she misunderstood this as Meimei. She told me she hasn’t met Meimei since her graduation. Luckily this was only one ticket, but it still sucked to kind of waste it. At least I learned something.
I told her that unfortunately overseas fans can’t watch Empty Canvas since you need a Japanese credit card. I told her that I’ve been hesitating sending mail to the show since I won’t be able to watch it anyway. She told me that’s a shame but told me I could still try. I asked her if she’d rather I send messages to her other radio shows, and she told me that’d be better if I can listen to those.
On my penultimate (before last) ticket she looked worried and asked me if this was my last one. I told her I had another one left. She squeezed my hands and told me she’s really happy I came. I wore my green scarf on this occasion because I was cold and it is green and I wanted to see Maya’s reaction. She saw it and laughed, saying I’m super funny for buying a green scarf and touched it. I told her I got it for that reason and she told me she knew. I just laughed and told her she’s the best and she made this massive smile.
For the last ticket I told her that today was a ton of fun. She told me she probably had way more fun than I did and will be waiting for me in Kyoto. I told her I’ll always support her. She told me “Let’s laugh together and reach new places!” To which I gave a thumbs up which she mimicked. She likes giving thumbs up, I notice her doing it with a lot of other fans too. She told me to watch out and have a safe trip home if I can’t come to Kyoto. I thanked her doing our usual nodding (I do this with Churi too, but for whatever reason whenever we say something sarcastic/funny or something “heartfelt” like that both people nod their heads quickly.) I asked her to please remember me (yeah, selfish and dumb of me to ask that but I guess my evil side took control of me) and she told me there’s no problem since my face is really distinct and gave me a thumbs up and laughed, thanked me for the last time, and I left.
Tumblr media
This event was very different from my other handshakes since I spent about 70% of it waiting in Maya’s lane. Maya sold out her handshakes and it was my first time at a sold out lane. The amount of people was quite incredible and the longest wait I had was thirty minutes. This happened during the second, third, and fourth blocks. Despite her fifth (final) block being sold out, it was late so I think some people used them all up at the beginning to leave early. Thanks to this I was able to use my tickets individually for the final block, but for the other ones I was forced to use three or four tickets per time. Still, I got a ton of conversation of my tickets and I really understand why people like stacking their tickets and buying a lot. With three+ tickets you’re actually able to have a conversation rather than you just blurting something out and the remember saying something back with no time to think. It’s especially great when it’s all on one member, since you can build up a sort of conversation and feel a sense of satisfaction having talked the whole day. I spent nearly seven? hours standing in Maya’s lane, so my feet hurt a lot afterwards.
Tumblr media
I also took part in a Maya community meeting where we did a sort of meet and greet for other fans. Two people talked about stuff they’re organizing for the future, namely the Miyagi handshake event. It was kind of cool just being there and listening in, but I didn’t know anyone and felt a lot of stares.
I also took part in both Maya and Churi’s farewells. Despite selling out, Maya’s slot ended first and I ran over to Churi’s afterwards. Maya didn’t make her way forward but Churi did. Churi tried talking but her voice was so hoarse that no one could hear anything.
Tumblr media
At any rate, Maya was great at reacting and initiating conversation. I really don’t regret buying so many for her, although I sort of wish I had more for Churi since I found out today that there she won’t be in Kyoto. Maya gives a feeling that she cares and she clearly puts a lot of thought. She’s really on-the-ball with her replies. As you can see we talked about a lot of stuff despite the time limit. I hope Churi can find some time to relax, but her schedule is so hellish, especially when I think she has to appear in the wrestling as well and practice for that.
On the way back I got a lift from the king of all Churi oshis, which was an honour. It was my first time riding a car in Japan and it sure beats the train since the roads were empty.

Winter Brawl 3D Wrap-Up!
Tumblr media
Greetings all! With Final Round on the horizon this weekend, the wake of news involving the official start of the competitive Tekken World Tour season, as well as the Capcom Pro Tour being in full swing, I wanted to take some time to go back to Winter Brawl as I have had yet to tell my thoughts on the event!
Three weeks ago. I know. Winter Brawl was three weeks ago. But! Time flies! I needed that time to soak it all in considering how fast that weekend came and went. Now that enough time has passed, I feel I can put my thoughts and everything into words.
Tumblr media
Copyright by Photography by Dstyles, which will be a lot of the photos in this post. Shouts to catching my good side!
For starters, getting there was pretty painless considering it was my first time in Philly in a very long time. I recall the last time I’ve been to Philly was UPenn, way back in high school on a college trip. I arrived there Friday evening with my good friend unexc1ted and was shortly picked up by our other good friend Big Dame. Shoutouts to both of you guys honestly. The latter for giving us that Philly hospitality and the former for being my ride or die that weekend.
In any case, that Friday there wasn’t much action aside from running some sets in Tekken with my boy. It was then I realized something different. Something I didn’t realize until I had my pools the following day.
My matches weren’t anything worthy of note. I lost clean to a really good Nina player who I’m notoriously known for having a bad matchup with. The Nina in question was always on top of me and I had no response to anything she did. I simply froze at the offense. My first match in losers was against an Akuma player who, honestly, I struggled closing out way more than I should’ve.
SO MUCH SO that I got hit with TWO, read, TWO Raging Demons!
I won that match and advanced, but it was then that last night’s session, me falling for things I shouldn’t have, and the following match when I played against a solid Claudio who did moves in which I knew what to do but did the wrong thing to punish. All of these comedies of errors confirmed that I was way out of sync.
Tumblr media

I’ve really, in that instance, lost whatever passion, drive, and motivation I had coming into Tekken and maintaining that energy to win.
I didn’t find the game fun and enticing to me as I did that one Summer day in 2017 when I made top 16 in Defend the North.
That one day when I was one win out of my pools in Combo Breaker last year.
The game evolved in more ways than one, people had evolved to.
I was stuck in first gear while everyone else were already drifting corners around the track.
Needless to say, while my face showed that I was cool and calm, deep down inside I really wasn’t. I hated that I didn’t have that passion anymore. I struggled to find that passion again, and forcing myself to enter a tournament that I had doubts in doing well in to begin with wasn’t the way to go. Alas, after talking to one of my closest friends over the phone back in New York, I regained myself.
I have nothing but love for Tekken and I always will. It was the first fighting game, Hell, one of the first video games I’ve ever owned and played. A lot of memories were shared playing the game casually as a kid and since the very beginning, I always wanted to take a character that was perceived as a “spammy noob dishonest character” as high as I could take him. Eddy always had that stigma even back in Tekken 3 days, so initially I wanted to use him to show others “Hey, people can take this character and work miracles with him!”
Other players had done a far better job at it than I was able to. Guys like Spero Jin and JeonDDing took capos to a global stage that I could ever dream of achieving. But as much as I look up to them, I still want to do what I can to carry him in my own way in my own style. My love for Eddy as a character justifies that.
However, I’m going on a tangent here. As I said in the previous article, that’s going to be another post for another time. I’m sorry for all of the teasing, but, in due time when I feel ready to talk about why I love capos, I will. Promise.
Tumblr media
After I had got off the phone with my bro (Thank you Ryuichi if you’re reading this), I decided to make the best of the situation. Sure, I went 1-2 in Tekken and did abysmal, but I had another tournament to look out for. A tournament I had no idea how I would do.
I admit. I initially signed up for the tournament because it was the low price of $Free, but I always had love for the Dead or Alive series as a whole. While Tekken 3 was my first fighting game as well as my first game I’ve ever owned, Dead or Alive 2 was way more appealing to me in every single way.
Eight-year-old me didn’t know it at the time but the Sega Dreamcast was an impressive system, especially compared to the Sony Playstation which was the only other console I had at the time, due to the Dreamcast being of an entirely different generation. Generations of consoles, Dreamcast’s competition being the Playstation 2, none of that mattered to me.
Dead or Alive 2 knocked Tekken 3 out of the park, since that was the only other competition, again, eight-year-old me saw at the time before I knew how console generations worked, in graphics and gameplay. This also includes how the characters looked, displayed emotion, and above all else the story!
Fighting games having a story! A very convoluted story with questions that refused to get answered until the following games, but still! It had something!
Tumblr media
The last fighting game I played prior which had any molecule of a story was Street Fighter Alpha 3, and considering at the time “eight-year-old” me did NOT understand the Street Fighter story (I am twenty-six and I still don’t fully understand it myself…) Dead or Alive’s story was a breath of fresh air.
Every character had an individual story to tell which all revolved around the main story in one way or another, and every character had something unique to bring to the table. It wasn’t until Tekken 4 that Namco started to put the same emphasis on story and character personality, but DoA 2 would be the last game I would play for almost eight years.
I couldn’t play DoA 3 because it was Xbox exclusive, and when I eventually did get a 360, I joined the DoA 4 train a tad bit too late. While I did play Dead or Alive 5, it followed the same vein as Tekken 6. I dabbed online for a bit, but never took it to competition levels, something I regret not doing during my college years. However, much like Tekken 7, I wanted to get into Dead or Alive competitively as my second favorite fighting game growing up.
So I was all but excited to see how I did, with my very limited knowledge from 4 and 5, entering the first ever Dead or Alive 6 tournament. I always considered Dead or Alive an entirely fun game to look at on a high level, but I never knew how much in depth it was in playing the game until I was given a crash course by Dead or Alive veterans an hour before the tournament began.
At the time of this writing, I have actually picked up Dead or Alive 6, so, my thoughts on how deep the game is had only amplified after playing with it for two or so weeks. Expect a review on the game very soon, in fact. It’ll be exciting!
Tumblr media
It’s me! On the right! And in game, on the left! La Mariposa!
Back to the tournament, a huge special shoutouts to Sly Bass for giving me the time to coach me as well as putting me on to the Dead or Alive group on Facebook. The community, from the various players I’ve met, were all helpful to me in their own ways and I am thankful they accepted me in open arms.
However, all three, count, three matches I’ve had were all on stream.
Somehow, I was able to get away with murder and win my first match on stream. Even though I lost the last two matches on stream, for someone who didn’t know what they were doing, I almost graced top sixteen. Much like Tekken, however, I wanted more. I hungered for more. Every chance I could get I played as many casuals as I could after the tournament. I sat down and dissected the game. I was entranced.
It was a running joke among my friends that I was becoming a “professional Dead or Alive player” much to my chagrin, as I only wanted to enter because it was free and a new experience, but it was fun. Too fun. I was enticed. I guess, as you could say, I really did become a Dead or Alive player overnight.
Tumblr media
The next day, Sunday, was finals day and I saw all three main events. Tekken, Dead or Alive, and Soul Calibur. The Tekken tournament was intense with the finish being as emotional as ever.
SourPiggy took his tournament win in an extreme close set which came down to the wire VS Sayco.
Tumblr media

On the Dead or Alive side of things, Dracarys and his Rig made use of his fancy footwork against Rikuto in another equally close set.
And lastly, in Soul Calibur, Linkorz took it against Saiyne but not without Saiyne making a very impressive run through losers bracket.

Before I close out my thoughts and experiences, I wanted to touch upon the amusements that were available outside of the main tournament hall. Alongside refreshments and a small arcade gaming room, where they held a Windjammers tournament among others, there were several vendors, including my friends over at Keito Krafts who I’m happy to have seen again, meeting them back at Summer Jam.
Among these vendors which caught my eye, was a booth with a diverse amount of stickers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So. Much. Dedication!
The first thing that drew me in were the amount of King of Fighters stickers, ranging from various characters, but also their specific versions in relation to their outfits. I don’t think there was a single outfit or character from King of Fighters that were looked over, and considering how many games and characters were introduced in the twenty-plus year franchise, that’s a tall order.
I was able to give a quick interview with Saltamiya, the woman behind the booth, while her assistant helped customers in the background, but it was evident even prior to the small interview that with her being her first ever vendor experience at any event, that she was excited to be a part of the scene.
One thing I always felt about the vendors in conventions and especially in fighting game tournaments, is that they are often not paid as much attention to. Vendors featuring in art, stickers, charms, keychains, and other creative craftsmanship is an integral part of the FGC. It’s what we use to express ourselves while simultaneously supporting the artists and their work and dedication as well.
If you can, please give her support! I’ll leave a link to her Twitter as well as the interview posted below!

All in all, it was a very great event. The event was well run, and for it being my second Big E tournament, I love how grassroots it is. I feel like I’m at a local, at home, even if I am several miles away from home. Even the staff who were helping run the tournament ensured everything was ran smoothly and all reasonable accommodations were met. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend April Annihilation, and Summer Jam is looking like a maybe for this year, but for my first tournament of the year it was met with a lot of self reflection.
I’m sure by Combo Breaker, which will be my next major, I’ll have it all figured out by then.
However, this will not be the last time you’ll hear from me for a while! You’ll be hearing lots! Thanks once again to Big E and the staff for making the tournament a blast and best of luck to everyone entering Final Round, April Annihilation, and others in between! May the sun never set on your Summer Dayz!

Anime Expo 2017 Day 1
Day 1 didn’t even feel like day 1 after yesterday. It felt closer to day 2 or 3 (which led to remembering that today actually was day 1). In proper AX tradition (for me), I saw Aqours on Saturday (last year for the welcome event, this year for their panel). While Karly ended up waking up about two hours after her alarm, I woke up much earlier than I would normally- 7 AM. I sort of just waited until she and her family woke up, using School Idol Festival and Starlight Stage as a surprisingly long distraction. The other majority of the time went towards stressing out over a scare involving the Aqours panel- according to somebody from the line (yes, at 7 AM), there were 90 total seats in the panel, leading to a massive collective panic attack from attendees. However, 90 soon turned into 2,000, which then turned into 1,000, and finally settled at 500. When we actually did leave (10:40), I at least had the assurance of a friend waiting in line. I had originally intended on going straight to the convention center, buying my day’s worth of merchandise, and then going to the Marriott for the Aqours panel. Little did I expect the entrance line to stretch for over three blocks. I ended up leaving the line to go back to the Marriott, as that was a better use of time. I found my friend on the third floor waiting outside of the diamond ballroom. I found this to be a good place to play School Idol Festival (as it was for a Love Live event and I wouldn’t be the odd one out in playing it) and attempted to survive for the long wait. 1:00 came, and I had met Edwin’s friend from Tennessee by then. We were all discussing Love Live in general for a good amount of time. The line began to snake into the ballroom at about 1:20, just 10 minutes before the projected start time. Our original thought was that we had underwhelming seats (in the first group of rows to the left), but after looking at the surroundings, it was legitimately a near-perfect area. It just so happened that Aqours was to sit in that exact location of the room, which left us within 20 feet of the girls. After noticing that, it was also noticed that the looping video showing on the center screen was the exact video from the previous year’s Aqours event, although some new clips were added for the ambassador program. After engaging in some somewhat questionable activity (something something idol concert-type cheering stuff), Aqours walked in. It was at this time that I realized just how surreal this situation was. 9 girls, who I had been watching through a screen for a year, were within 20 feet of me. 9 girls from Japan, who voiced some of my favorite fictional characters, were talking in front of me nearly exactly how they had done so live. The actual event was almost completely filled by the three episodes aired. The voice actresses talked to the audience for a bit beforehand before retreating back to the room they had been waiting in. Other than that, the event was pretty much what was expected. After this, my friend and I decided to go shopping (but not before getting food). It was at this point that I realized just how insane the situation was back at the convention center. The exhibition hall was PACKED. My original plan was to buy merchandise from the Atlus booth, but that was quickly shot down by the cut-off line. It also took a surprisingly long amount of time to find the Bushiroad booth, which already had problems in merchandise arriving successfully. In order to obtain stickers, partially in the hopes of getting a signed sticker, one (or many) must spend at least 20 dollars, with one being given per 20$. Our purchase totaled at 140$. While he made the majority of the purchases (Aqours Club CD, Kowareyasuki, and a shirt), I bought a messenger bag (mostly to help me carry everything), which left the total sitting at 130$ until I bought a Yoshiko keychain for the ambassador program. In the end, our lack of certain stickers and signatures was disappointing, but expected. I ended up taking the Riko and Chika stickers (because RikoChika tbh) while he took Mari, Dia, Kanan, You, and Ruby. After that, we split up for a bit (him for a break, me for the Hatsune Miku booth). While it did take much longer than expected to find the nearly hidden booth, I left with a Hatsune Miku shirt, watch, and sticker, all for 30$. This was actually my last purchase of the day, mostly due to the long lines at every booth. After this, I mostly just walked around, seeing if I would end up spending any more throughout the day. Once the exhibition hall closed, I moved over to the entertainment hall. In it, I saw many anime-themed vehicles (iDOLM@STER motorcycle, Hatsune Miku car, etc). At some point, I found a booth centered around gambling machines. I ended up playing an Evangelion-themed slot machine and got two sets of matching icons (I thought it was rigged until another person and I tested it). At this point, I was sort of tired and ready to go back. That was pretty much the end of the day.
Total Spent: 75$
1 messenger bag: 35$
Yoshiko keychain: 10$
10th Anniversary Hatsune Miku Shirt (also + free watch/sticker): 30$

Shannon Knapp Confirms Brett Atchley Has Been Banned From Invicta Fc Events
Bill Grigsby retired last season following sixty two many years in the broadcast booth and he has certainly been skipped. That is not a knock on the people who have changed him on the display simply because - like Denny Matthews for the Kansas City Missouri Royals - Grigs is the Chiefs. Your family members will be delighted with the reindeer, 3 locomotives, rocking horse, elves' dorm, and even get to see Mr. & Mrs. Clause's Kansas City Kansas house. Very best of all your family can enjoy the splendor and magic of the holidays free of charge. Grisnik is a resident of the Strawberry Hill region of Kansas City Missouri City, Kan. and most of her paintings are of previous and present buildings of the downtown KCK area. The paintings are usually commissioned by someone wanting to give as a present to a relative or company owner to doc the developing. All paintings are done on watercolor paper with acrylic paint. Elsewhere in Kansas City Missouri, a printer informed Gill about a company that used independent salesmen to advertise goods that had been offered in regional territories by touring salesman door to door. Gill contacted the Nationwide Advertising Specialty Business located in Arlington, Texas. The business helped Gill to produce an advertisement that would advertise bumper stickers to the sales reps who could then sell them to numerous locations, such as vacationer destinations. The bumper sticker rapidly grew to become the ideal souvenir as people purchased cars after the war. Matthew (Matt) Cassel performs for the Kansas City Chiefs. He is number sixteen on the roster and has experienced five years of encounter. For a list of stats on this player, you might go to the site right right here. The name Matthew indicates present of God and is from English origin. For the past month now they have been pretty close to tying the White Sox for fourth place but can never manage to get forward of them. Perhaps 2008 can be a break out year for this ball club but until them, they will dead minimum in the AL Central. If there is 1 factor that can damage a journey it is when your baggage is misplaced when you travel by plane. I have listened to that there is an typical of 1 bag per aircraft. I was informed this purchase a buddy who works for an airline business. I don't know if that is accurate but it does appear to be from what I have seen. I have lost my bag once and did get it back. When I was in school I had a buddy who misplaced a bag and he never got his back again. It was a instead bad scenario for him. Kansas City later used a second 3- run to up the direct to eighteen-twelve. Butler recovered sufficient to trim the lead to 20-16, but the Blue Devils flexed their blocking abilities late in the set. Two straight blocks and a an ace made it 23-sixteen. Kills from Jessica Thompson and Mertens finished off the set. How Soehn manages all these challenges Kansas City Kansas will most likely figure out the final outcome tonight, far much more than where the game is performed and the capability, or lack there of, from the opponent. A alter to the way bumper stickers were produced would arrive later. In the 1930's, Forest P. Gill labored for the Crawford Manufacturing Company in Kansas City Missouri, Missouri. The business had been making canvas products this kind of as seat and tire covers. The canvas was a durable material that was also extremely flexible, as it could be printed on with ink through silkscreening. These inks were different from the dyes that had been used in the past, as the dyes would fade or run in the daylight or rain. As a outcome, the canvas turned out to be an excellent choice for printed advertisements for the outdoors. Soon, canvas was utilized for outdoor advertisements on the canvas awnings that went over shop home windows and later on they had been utilized for masking spare tires and turning those into ads as nicely. In that game, in the second Kansas City Missouri sport of the season against the Saint Louis Cardinals, noticed Washington give up a ninety seven garden kickoff return for a landing to the Cardinals Don Shy. Herb said he was "knocked woozy" defending on that perform. When you look up which metropolitan areas did the most searches for St. Louis, Maryland Heights comes up first. Could it be that this city, which is in north St. Louis County, doesn't know where St. Louis is? Most of the other cities that did a great deal of searches for St. Louis were in out state Missouri and Illinois, with the exception of Minneapolis and Kansas City, Kansas City Kansas. Perhaps individuals in other states already know everything there is to know about us here in St. Louis and we require to teach the people in our own state. But then occasionally, out state Missouri seems like an additional country in any case. On June twenty five,1860, the steamer Ben Lewis blew up and burned to the waters edge in Cairo, Illinois. It was regarded as the biggest explosion at that time by the boats boilers. In all, 23 people misplaced their life. Even though many boats ended up sinking, only a extremely couple of have been found and excavated. The Arabia hit a snag and sunk in 1853. It was discovered in 45 ft of mud in 1987. Alongside with it arrived many artifacts. Unopened bottles of fragrance alongside with instances of small hand guns had been some of the products discovered. The boat was found in the middle of a cornfield alongside the river. It is now part of the Arabia Riverboat Museum in Kansas City, Missouri.

Project 3: Trans Awareness Event (with Out Boulder)
A few weeks ago, the instructor of Design for Change invited a panel from Out Boulder to speak to our class. During the panel, we listened to the experiences of people part of Out Boulder and got to share in their experiences if only for an hour. It’s important to be exposed to these stories so that people not in their community can become more connected and informed. The panel didn’t just come in to talk about this, they came in to introduce our next project which would be centered around these experiences. The class went through a brainstorming phase and we all split into groups based on our interests. I joined the event/interactive group.
The event group started off with the basis of breaking down gender stereotypes. We brainstormed for a little while on this and our ideas were all over the place. We wanted to do things anywhere from opening a nail polish booth for anyone to get their nails painted to hosting a giant paperboard in Norlin quad where people of all different gender backgrounds could draw themselves in an accurate representation. Our constraints played an important role in coming to a final decision. Constraints included time, space coordination, guest coordination, and remaining sensitive to our topic of trans awareness. I contacted Dennis Small Cultural Center (DSCC) in the UMC to request their space for a night. We were also planning on contacting Events Planning and Catering to see what else we could do. After about a week and a reply from the DSCC, our instructor joined our ideation and said he could request to reserve a space in a coffee shop (Innisfree Cafe) he’s held events in before. We went that route and reserved a night.
Our final decision was to use this time and space to share more stories from the LGBTQQ+ community like what Out Boulder shared with our class. We decided to call this event “Letters to You” and use this time to not only share stories, but have people write letters to their parents/friends/siblings about coming out. My group mate made a marketing poster and we began to share our event with people we know and others in the community. We didn’t announce this to everyone, we just targeted areas on campus like and around the coffee shop to promote our poster. We contacted the GSA on campus, the spectrum hall in Hallett Hall, the Center for Inclusion and Social Change, and other LGBTQQ+ student groups. Out Boulder was also very much involved with promotion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During this time, we also organized the event itself. For this to work, we needed speakers, letters, a script, and a welcoming environment. Josie from Out Boulder was our first speaker and a few of our friends wrote us letters that my group mates and I read during the event. We got flowers for the tables, roses for our speakers, made surveys for after the event, created itineraries for the tables, and solidified our script. Other groups in Design for Change were doing amazing things with their projects so they provided some resources like trans stickers and Allyship posters.
The event itself was successful, especially for the time constraint. We started the night with introductions and information about the trans population. We talked about important topics like suicide rates and school dropout rates. Our first speaker was Josie, who also spoke for our class initially. Her story is always told so well and she leaves opportunity for the audience to reflect on themselves as well. This was a great way to start our story time. Next, my group mate read a letter from her friend which is pictured below. The letter was to her past self and self-love. The next letter was from my friend who grew up in a heavily Christian family where being gay was a sin. Although I had already practiced reading the letter, reading it in front of a crowd was a completely different experience. My friend is such a warm hearted soul and reading out loud his struggles of being gay was incredibly distressful. His letter captured so much of what I had in mind for this event; to be uncomfortable with the situations and hardships the LGBTQQ+ community face merely because they are LGBTQQ+. His letter made his fight so clear and visible to others and he’s brave for sharing his experience with others. (I wrote him my own letter and gave him a rose the next day). Unfortunately (and a little embarrassingly), I was emotionally unstable after the letter from my friend. I wish I was strong enough to sit through the open mic and other letters. I know the other experiences shared that night were so vital to the success of our event and reaching others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I learned so much about the logistics of planning and event and that design is incorporated into most steps. A good design can make or break an event. I also realized that other people can really be resources for the success of an event and that it doesn’t have to be done alone. Dan, the other groups in D4C, Out Boulder, and Innisfree all helped ensure our success through their support and guidance. The most difficult part about planning this event was gathering enough speakers and stories via letters to make this worthwhile. We reached out to many organizations on campus, both via email and in person, and very few people responded. I believe the time constraint contributed to our low response as well as many of our student friends from the LGBTQQ+ community already having plans or class during our event. It was also a learning experience to reach out to people that we didn’t know personally and ask them to do something very personal. Overall, this event was an amazing cornerstone in my time in D4C. It really emphasized collaborating with the target audience on what would be best. I thought I’d be doing mostly environmental activism when I came into this class, but I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to expand my causes into personal acceptance through project one and three. It’s not D4C for others only, it’s also D4C for us.

A food trend arrived two summers ago in the neighborhood of Toronto where I live that continues to beguile me for its endurance. In an area with several fantastic ice cream options, the longest and most consistent lineups are for a place specializing in charcoal-infused ice cream. It tasted no better than your average soft-serve, it looked like poop and stained your teeth black, and it required a half-hour wait just to get a cone.
The health benefits associated with charcoal-infused foods are dubious quackery at best, especially in ice cream, and yet every day there’d be dozens of people standing outside, taking selfies with their cones, which they took three licks of and promptly threw away.
The charcoal ice cream trend had nothing to do with taste, however. Like its recent cousins the unicorn latte, the rainbow sprinkle cake, or other viral sweets, it was consumption purely as visual entertainment, a food trend tailor-made for Instagram feeds. Similar to shopping for new shoes you don’t need, or buying trinkets on vacation, it is an act of commerce used to pass the time on a sunny Saturday. It also was an act of social bonding, between those standing in line, their friends who had already eaten there, and their followers online, heart-tapping those poop-colored cones from screens near and far.
Why do we buy the things we buy? This simple question forms the heart of a multitrillion-dollar riddle at the core of our culture of consumption. It is studied relentlessly by economists and sociologists, picked apart by sales departments and marketing firms, opined on by authors and experts, and agonized over by everyone working in the world of consumer goods, from local coffee shop owners to retail chain CEOs.
Trends seem to come out of nowhere, blindsiding us each season, in a way that feels unpredictable. That’s because these shifts in the collective appetite (for everything from music and food to clothes and even politics) are driven by a force bigger than we can see: human emotion.
As someone who has been looking at consumer trends and the forces that shape them over much of the past decade, when you step back and try to understand trends, you see that nearly all trends, and the buying that fuels them, are based in emotion.
A trend that personifies the centrality of emotion in consumer trends is the surprising growth of books over the past decade, especially in the United States, despite an avalanche of predictions to the contrary.
Just a few years ago, experts were nearly unanimous in their belief that books and bookstores were certain to disappear. Articles heralded the end of the independent bookstore as Amazon continued its explosive growth, Borders went bankrupt, and e-book sales gained ground. In a 2013 blog post, marketing guru and best-selling author Seth Godin predicted books were “dying” and bookstores “doomed” because of superior technological competition; digital is where we wanted to spend our dollars. Others, like the venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, predicted brick-and-mortar retail would be finished.
Based on all measures of logic, their predictions were perfectly sensible. Faced with the growth of e-readers like Kindles and iPads, print books were an outdated and easily disrupted technology. Paper books cost more to produce and purchase, take up precious space in warehouses, stores, and homes, lose their value immediately, and are environmentally destructive (publishing is an industry based on arboreal genocide).
And bookstores? How could a brick-and-mortar space with limited selection and financial resources compete with Amazon, which sells every single book, for less than anyone else, anywhere, anytime — free shipping included? The economics simply made no sense. Just look at what happened with music and photography! There was just no reason for people to buy books.
But they did. According to the American Booksellers Association, as well as publishing industry figures, sales of books and the number of new independent bookstores opening across the country have been growing steadily, year by year, since 2009.
Meanwhile, e-book sales have plateaued (after peaking around 2014), and Amazon has entered the brick-and-mortar bookstore game, driven in no small part by the trend back toward books and bookstores it somehow missed. What changed? It wasn’t economics or any specific industry dynamic. It was the emotion of the consumer, which grew enough to support a trend that brought books back in favor.
Like most successful trends, these emotions were deeply felt, and linked to bigger forces in our culture. At a time when few of us dare to go anywhere without a smartphone, books tapped into a growing desire among many consumers for a sense of physicality and the measured pace it commands.
Like the other analog goods that have seen a resurgence in recent years, including vinyl records, board games, and even film cameras, books promised a slower, isolated experience, free from distractions, pop-up ads, dead batteries, Russians (unless you’re reading about them), and the other byproducts of digital innovation. In an age of noise, they offer the quiet many of us desperately desire. They also offered certain incalculable tangible pleasures for our senses: the oft-cited smell, feel, and sound of books, which book lovers relish with romance.
In a similar way, the bookstore offered the above, in addition to something even more desirable: community. By providing actual places in cities, town, and neighborhoods where readers and book lovers could walk in, hear author talks, get personalized recommendations from knowledgeable staff, and, most importantly, just be around books and other book lovers, they provided a physical space that delivered the one thing Amazon is incapable of: a sense of belonging.
Bookstores and the books they sell bring consumers into a family — a family where you share the same values, based on your buying habits. You see it with men like my father and their endless conversations about road bikes, with kids unboxing their Lego sets on YouTube, and with the kale-eating Prius driver who feels so compelled to tell other kale eaters who they are that they actually go to the trouble of putting a pro-kale bumper sticker on their Prius (as if the Prius itself doesn’t send that message).
We buy as much to belong as to own. And for readers, the value of showing off their Politics & Prose tote bag or proudly holding up their copy of Roxane Gay’s Hunger on the subway is as powerful a symbol you can send into the world that I am book people as any overt declaration on social media (though book-loving Instagrammers abound).
Last year, Harvard Business school professor Ryan Raffaelli decided to figure out why this was, interviewing dozens of independent bookstore owners across America, as well as publishers, authors, and industry experts. Raffaelli, who specializes in the adaption of legacy industries and previously studied the resurgence of Swiss watchmakers and pencil manufacturers, found that it boiled down to the 3 C’s: community, curation, and convening. Bookstores held events. They created safe and welcoming spaces. And they leveraged this into real, lasting relationships with their customers.
“Combined, these aspects … served as important bottom-up processes that reframed the mature independent bookselling industry as a legitimate and distinct form of brick-and-mortar bookselling,” Raffaelli wrote.
Donna Paz Kaufman, a publishing industry veteran whose consulting company Paz & Associates works with independent bookstores, and the people who own them, across America, agrees.
“What is tangible and lasting for independent bookstores is that they are the living room of the community,” Kaufman said. “A place where ideas are welcome, dialogue is interesting, and people can simply be and find other people/books/programs that make life a little bit better.”
Over the past few years, Kaufman’s business has been busier than ever, with more new clients coming to her every day, interested in opening a bookstore in their neighborhood and town. “It’s a little magnet for community, a place you can go and feel safe, encouraged, and feel prompted to learn something new, or you can just be,” she said.
Sure, there are some logical advantages to the trends that take off beyond mere fads. Kale has endured because it’s easy to plant, cheap, and can work in all sorts of dishes. Birkenstocks made a huge comeback because they’re damn comfortable. The publishing industry defended itself better than other media industries against digital disruption because books remain relatively profitable to make and sell, while independent bookstores benefited from the demise of Borders and a defanged Barnes & Noble. But the practical factors obscure the golden rule of consumer behavior, which is that the logic of emotion triumphs above all else.
Some emotions, of course, are more powerful than others. The emotions that draw us to books are strong enough to transform an entire industry. The emotions that draw us to Instagrammable charcoal ice cream, however, seem to be more fleeting.
I remember sitting on a trends prediction panel several years ago at the annual Fancy Food Show with industry trend forecasters, former Food Network stars, and other food journalists, with the goal of zeroing in on the next big thing. As we discussed the green shoots of food trends we’d observed while walking thousands of trade show booths and eating more samples than a human body can handle, activated charcoal foods came up a few times. “Oh, they’ve been saying charcoal foods will be the next big thing for years,” one woman said dismissively. Everyone nodded in agreement.
Even though that charcoal ice cream parlor still has a lineup, the overall trend is limited to a few shops in a few cities; you’re unlikely to see a tub of charcoal vanilla ice cream at Safeway anytime soon.
In the end, we’ll try anything for emotion. But if it doesn’t taste better than Häagen-Dazs, we’ll be backing eating good old vanilla the next hot day.

The Nintendo King and the Midlife Crisis
It was December in San Diego, the palm trees strung with tinsel in Ocean Beach. Pat Contri shuffled barefoot on the floor of his game room, pitch-black hair sodden from the shower and writhing above his eyes. He was in front of a wall of practically 1,000 competitions for the Nintendo Entertainment System, the greatest console ever secreted; the wall, flooring to ceiling, was amazing to gaze, Contri as tiny as Ahab in front of his whale. He spoke from the stickers of gray-headed plastic cartridges he’d spent two decades collecting: Spy Hunter , with its Peter Gunn theme, which he got for Christmas in 1987; Jaws , which he picked up at a flea market with his mother in Rahway, New Jersey, a year or two eventually; Zelda II , video games he had his parents order from the Sears catalog in 1988, a game he cried over because it made perpetually to arrive. The wall was both a sanctuary to his life’s pastime and the backdrop for his use. For a decade, Contri has played a reputation called Pat the NES Punk for nearly 250,000 spectators on YouTube. Supporters realise him at the airport, at the gym, at the swap meets, and he has become not only the panel of experts on Nintendo but a public look for anyone who grown up with the NES, anyone who’s worn a Donkey Kong T-shirt or who still has the Super Mario Bros . theme song throbbing in their heart. The Punk is goofier than the real-life Contri–a bit more manic, an exaggeration of his id. Games are the Punk’s life, and remembers of the NES sing him to sleep and then wake him in sweat. Almost all of his videos, which run around 10 instants, focus on the Punk’s experience with a single NES game. Each is a compounding autobiography instruction and evaluation, handed with a narrative articulation that causes Contri( as scribe, superintendent, and wizard) show off his sense of humour, his knowledge of Nintendo, and rarely even the extents of his introspection–about being boxed into an endless infancy by videogames, about the inherent sadness of trying to fill a flaw in their own lives with them.
