i read 10 books this month! i feel like i did a mid month check in but i cannot find my post so i will just write new reviews :-)

Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh

i really liked my year of rest and relaxation so i was looking forward to reading this but sadly it was terrible. the main character was just a little too edgy. she worked in a boy’s prison and i just hated that setting too much to continue. DNF at 100 pages.

Notes on a Silencing by Lacy Crawford

a memoir on a woman’s experience being sexually assaulted at her elite new england boarding school and the lengths the administration went to cover it up for decades. i thought this book was so powerful. also the setting of a new england boarding school in the early 90s was very atmospheric. i highly recommend. 5/5

Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah

after the death of their father, 2 daughters learn about their emotionally distant mother’s past, including the extreme challenges she faced in russia during world war 2. the first half was only okay, but we get deep into the world war 2 setting in the second half. on par with the nightingale levels of traumatizing. i just finished this last night but i think it’s probably a 4.5/5 because the second half was so strong. it made me cry so much.

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

ummm this book is perfection. it’s a travel romance and estranged best friends to lovers. two former best friends travel to palm springs together. beach read by emily henry was one of my favorite books from last year and this was even better. so so good. 5/5

The Lost Man by Jane Harper

this is the fourth book i’ve read by the author this year. this one follows a man and his family in the aftermath of one of their brother’s mysterious death in the australian outback. very atmospheric and some good discussions on the cycle of abuse. tw child abuse. 4/5

Crazy Stupid Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams

the third book in the bromance book club series. this one is friends to lovers about a cat cafe owner and a former hacktivist. there are some unexpected discussions about the war in iraq? as with all the books in this series i really liked it and i cannot wait for the fourth one to come out this summer. 4/5

Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain

this KILLED me. it’s a historical fiction about forced sterilization in north carolina in the 1960s. we follow a brand new social worker and one of the families she’s assigned to. one of the girls in the family has already been sterilized without her consent and now the social worker is being pressured to sterilize the 15 year old sister. this book was pretty heavy and very informative. i listened to the audiobook which i would recommend because the narrator’s southern accent is great. 5/5

Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman

this book gets the unfortunate honorific of the only backman book i didn’t love. we follow britt-marie, a recently divorced woman in her early 60s as she movies to a small town where she reluctantly befriends the residents and becomes the soccer coach of a youth team. this book was good but i didn’t love it. we get some good character growth and some funny parts, but it was nowhere near as good as his other books (all of which were 5/5 for me). this one is a 3/5

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

i’m mad at this one lol. we follow the main character, a teenager who finds out she is in the will of an eccentric billionaire and he has left her billions while snubbing his relatives. she has never met this man and doesn’t know why this stranger left her his inheritance. she works with the four grandsons who were snubbed to solve riddles and discover why she was left the money. this was YA and read pretty young. for example there were discussions about losing your virginity and when the characters spoke they didn’t swear, they said things like “motherforker.” i was like i am 26 (turning 27 this month!) i am too old for this. howmever i stuck it out because i wanted to figure out why this girl inherited all that money. the gag is this is apparently the first book in the series and although i didn’t really like it i will definitely be reading the second book because it ended on a hang!!! 3/5 because of the intrigue 

The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner 

this is a memoir about a woman’s experiences growing up on a mormon polygamist colony in mexico. her father, who was murdered when she was a baby, had over 40 children. her mother remarried and that man had four wives despite having no way to support them. everything this poor girl experienced was absolutely fucked up. i read this in a little over a day. i feel bad saying i loved it because these real experiences were extremely heavy but it was excellent. it made me cry a lot. 5/5

Klara and the Sun by Kazou Ishiguro

this book follows a robot (or artifical friend) Klara, as she is purchased by a sickly young girl. this book was pretty weird. it takes place in a dystopian setting but not a lot of details are given about what is going on in that world. it’s up to us as the reader to figure it out. this was an engaging and quick read, but i wish the author was a little more explicit about the commentary he was trying to make. 3/5

Time and time again during this year’s pandemic, movie studios have had to make the best of a bad situation. HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2020 comes along with the most extreme example yet.

WarnerMedia undoubtedly had big plans for Wonder Woman 1984 when it scheduled it for a holiday release last year. After moving it to the summer, however, the conglomerate had to delay its theatrical release time and time again. Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25.

While Wonder Woman 1984 is definitely the headline this month, there are some other intriguing streaming options for HBO Max in December. The month plays host to a whole host of high-powered documentaries like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (Dec. 3), Alabama Snake (Dec. 9), and the Tiger Woods documentary Tiger (Dec. 15).

There isn’t much going on on the TV side of things. His Dark Materials is set to run its season 2 finale on Dec. 28. But at that point, everyone will likely be on their fourth Wonder Woman rewatch.

1. What is your name?

Indiana Burke, but everyone calls me Odessa. I guess it makes sense, since that’s where I’m originally from.

2. How old are you?

I’m 32 years old.

3. What do you look like?

Rather plain? My late wife always said I was handsome but you know I’m pretty sure once you tie the knot it’s considered the law to call your spouse beautiful or handsome. I have short dark hair, blue eyes. I was told when I was a kid I’d be taller if I didn’t slouch so much, but I’m 5′9 so I guess that was an old wive’s tale. Strong jaw, weak chin. Not too weak though! I mean... Yeah, I’m just. Your average guy.

4. Where are you from? Where do you live now?

I’m originally from Odessa, Russia. Most folks these days don’t really like to hear that so I just tell them I’m from Odessa. They assume Texas and I don’t correct them. Currently living in what’s being referred to as Hangman’s Alley in the Commonwealth. Boston Mass.

5. What was your childhood like?

Oh, I had it great growing up. Now, I wouldn’t say we were rich or anything like that, but I never found myself bored or looking for things to do. As a kid I loved playing outside and staging small arrangements of rocks and plants and anything else I could find. Little dioramas. I guess that as much as anything else attributed to my love of photography.

6. What groups are you friendly with? Are you allied with any factions?

Oh. Well. I don’t think I’m really supposed to say. Some type of relation to a locomotive.

7. Tell me about your best friend.

I really gotta say that I don’t truly think I have a best friend right now. Kinda sad, I know. But that’s okay. :)

8. Do you have a family? Tell me about them!

I had a family. Beautiful wife and beautiful son. I miss them every day.

9. What about a partner or partners?

That’s. Um. That’s really none of your business.

10. Who are your enemies, and why?

I have to say, for a great many reasons, I’m not too fond of the Brotherhood.

11. Have you ever heard of The Brotherhood of Steel? What do you think about them?

12. What about The Enclave?

I’m not very familiar with the Enclave, but I’m sure I’ll learn more as I go.

13. How do you feel about Super Mutants?

I’m fine with anyone so long as they’re not shooting at me.

14. What’s the craziest fight you’ve ever been in?

I’ll get back to you. Every fight to me is crazy.

15. Have you ever fought a Deathclaw?

More than once! Fascinating to photograph though...

16. Do you like fighting?

Oh heavens no. I’m terrible at it.

17. What’s your weapon of choice?

Honestly I’d rather be in the wasteland with a camera than a gun. But I guess a sniper rifle’s like a camera, just a little more deadly.

18. How do you survive? Your wits, your charm, your skills, brute force, some combination? (a.k.a. what’s your S.P.E.C.I.A.L?)

I like to think I could talk myself out of trouble pretty easily. And if that fails, I’m pretty fast.

19. Have you ever been in a vault? What do you think about them?

In a weird sort of way I’m from one. Can’t say I’m fond.

20. How do you beat all the radiation around here? Has it affected you?

Thankfully I’ve managed to find a decent stash of Rad-X and Rad-Away that I really don’t need to worry about it. Clean water helps, too.

21. What’s your favorite wasteland critter?

I like... my dog. He’s perfectly normal. And not scary.

22. What’s your least favorite wasteland critter?

Anything taller than me that I have to fight. Really, I can appreciate anything from a distance.

23. How do you feel about robots?

I think robots are just fine. :)

24. How many caps do you have on you right now?

Oh no. You’re going to rob me, aren’t you? Just. Please don’t break my camera, I just got this one working.

25. Nuka Cola or Sunset Sarsaparilla?

Been a Nuka Boy all my life, and I’ve got the decoder pin to prove it.

26. Do you do chems?

Well now... I think I’ve gotten a little dependent on Steady just to make sure I always get the perfect shot. Taking pictures is a little hard when your hands have the shakes. I’d like to say I can stop taking it whenever I want, but the feeling’s nice. I don’t think I could.

27. Do you ever think about the Pre-War world?

I try not to. What good does it do, to think about the past? All we can do is move forward and remember the mistakes that brought us here to begin with.

28. What’s your deepest regret? What would you do differently?

You know, there isn’t anything I can say I’d do differently, because you can’t change the past. Again, we just need to keep moving forward.

29. What’s your biggest achievement? Or what do you hope to achieve?

I think fixing up Hangman’s Alley and making it a bit of a respectable place is pretty noteworthy!

30. What do you want for the future? For yourself? Your friends? The world?

Happiness. Companionship. Safety. Compassion. And lots and lots of pictures.

Esta comedia nos trae a dos mejores amigas que esperan ansiosas empezar el instituto. Aunque Alexa (Paris Berelc; Mighty Med, Lab Rats: Elite Force) está recibiendo un tratamiento contra el cáncer, su personalidad y entusiasmo nunca desfallecen, especialmente con su leal y adorable amiga Katie (Isabel May) a su lado, pero a veces se sienten fuera de lugar en un momento de la vida en el que parece muy importante encajar.
