I have a genuine question. It’s referring to the stories posted by the Jersey boys cast when they are in the nun uniforms getting ready to leave for a show. I’m not religious, far from it and I don’t know much about Christianity. I just wanted to know if they are being serious when they do the “body and the blood” thing with the biscuits and juice as a way to, I guess, pray(is that what it is?) for good luck for a show, or are they just goofing around? A better way to put my question I guess, is to ask if it’s insensitive to do that if they don’t actually claim that religion? (unless they actually believe in that, then I would assume not?) I’m not personally offended by it like I said, I’m not religious. I have that curiosity though. I just wanted some different perspectives on this since a lot of people around where I live are extremely sensitive when it comes to that kind of stuff so they would immediately take offense for me even asking, so I figured this blog was possibly a good place to ask?
Hello anon! Thank you for sending in your question, which is totally valid! 😃 Personally, I've been raised in Catholic faith, and even though I'm not much of a believer these days, I still respect it (as well as any other religion, of course). So, to answer your question, what they're doing is to recreate a religious sacrament performed during Mass, which is called Eucharist or Holy Communion, during which the priest blesses some bread and wine, in order to figuratively turn them into the body and blood of Christ, respectively. Then, the bread (which isn't actually bread as we know it, but some round, flat pieces of wafer-like consistency that don't have much of a taste and are called "host", from the latin hostia) are distributed to the congregation. It's a ritual done in the memory of Jesus Christ, who is believed to have done the same at the Last Supper (the night before his crucifixion), by giving his disciples bread and wine.
Although, this ritual is only performed during Mass, no one does it at home or with friends as a way to pray and ask for good luck, for example. So, what they're doing is far from serious and can be seen as mocking a sacred ritual. Some people might find it funny or see it as innocuous fun among friends, but more religious people (especially older people, like my grandma 😅) might find it very offensive and disrespectful, or at the very least, insensitive.

QUOTATIONS - CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE’S ‘PURPLE HIBISCUS’ (FIRST PUBLISHED 2003)
First sentence:
‘Things started to fall apart at home when my brother, Jaja, did not go to communion and Papa flung his heavy missal across the room and broke the figurines on the etagere.’ (Adichie, 2016, p.3).
On Palm Sunday:
‘Mama placed the wet palm fronds, which were wet from holy water, on the dining table and then went upstairs to change. Later, she would knot the palm fronds into sagging cross shapes and hang them on the wall beside our gold-framed family photo. They would stay there until next Ash Wednesday, when we would take the fronds to church, to have them burned for ash.’ (Adichie, 2016, p.3).
‘ “When we let our light shine before men, we are reflecting Christ’s Triumphant Entry,” ... ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.4).
On communion:
‘‘Papa insisted we call it the host because “host” came close to capturing the essence, the sacredness of Christ’s body. “Wafer” was too secular, wafer was what one of Papa’s factories made - chocolate wafer, banana wafer, what people bought their children to give them a treat better than biscuits.’ (Adichie, 2016, p.4).
‘ “It is the body of our Lord.” ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.4).
On purple hibiscus:
‘Aunty Ifeoma’s experimental purple hibiscus: rare, fragrant … ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.15).
‘ “I didn’t know there were purple hibiscuses.” ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.127).
‘ “See, the purple hibiscuses are about to bloom,” … ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.252).
On education:
‘The words in my textbooks kept turning into blood each time I read them. Even as my first-term exams approached, even when we started to do class reviews, the words still made no sense.’ (Adichie, 2016, p.37).
‘ … the worry of making sure I came first this term. It was like balancing a sack of gravel on my head every day at school and not being allowed to steady it with my hand. I still saw the print in my textbooks as a red blur … ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.52).
On religion:
‘ “My father spent his time worshipping gods of wood and stone.” ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.47).
‘ “You’re Papa-Nnukwu is not a pagan… he is a traditionalist,” …
Pagan, traditionalist, what did it matter? He was not Catholic, that was all; he was not of the faith. He was one of the people whose conversion we prayed for so that they did not end in the everlasting torment of hellfire.’ (Adichie, 2016, p.81).
‘ “Pagan rituals are misinformed superstition, and they are the gateway to Hell.” ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.106).
‘ “ … it’s about time Our Lady came to Africa. Don’t you wonder how come she always appears in Europe? She was from the Middle East after all.” ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.137).
‘ … Papa-Nnukeu was not a heathen but a traditionalist … sometimes what was different was just as good as what was familiar … when Papa-Nnukeu did his itunzu, his declaration of innocence, in the morning, it was the same as our saying the rosary.’ (Adichie, 2016, p.165).
‘Papa did not approve of people speaking in tongues because it was what the fake pastors at those mushroom Pentecostal churches did.’ (Adichie, 2016, p.207).
‘ “The white missionaries brought us their god … which was the same colour as them, worshipped in their language and packaged in the boxes they’d made.” ‘ (Adichie, 2016, pp.266-7).
‘‘When the missionaries first came, they didn’t think Igbo names were good enough. They insisted that people take English names to be baptised.” ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.272).
‘ “But have you ever wondered why? Why did He have to murder his own son so we would be saved? Why didn’t He go ahead and just save us?” ‘ (Adichie, 2016, p.289).

Soulmate Au (both parties have the same system for soulmate identification, and it does not involve blood or shared pain).
Good news! You got it! Also @quality-cringe suggested cookies so we got that too.
-------------
They say the first time you share food with your soulmate it tastes like nothing you've ever eaten in your life. Some people say its like having a mouth full of popping candy, others say its like the best cake you've ever eaten. like the one you had when you were five that looked like a witch and everything was sugary deliciousness.
The one thing that everyone can agree on is that it always tastes sweet.
Of course not everyone has the time or inclination to sit through an endless impossibility of meals in the hope that their date is their fated to be. So people started having little crackers set out on tables at restaurants or in the doorway of homes for the express purpose of finding out on first meeting if the person in front of them is their soulmate.
This has lead to a booming industry of meeting wafers and business cards made of edible paper. Its standard on meeting someone new to each pull out a wafer or card, break it in half, and give it to the other person. The wafers are tasteless little things but are as sweet as honey if the other half is between the lips of your soulmate.
Some people even have little unsweetened biscuits they bake at home (they say you have better luck if you make them yourself).
Communion of the souls, some lapsed catholic wiseass nicknamed it once and it stuck.
Its so ingrained in society that the first time Roxanne Ritchi is kidnapped by Megamind she's deeply confused as to why she feels hungry despite it being right after lunch.
Its actually the reason she doesn't scream the first time. She's so thrown by not being offered a broken cracker that she feels unsettled and confused for at least half the kidnapping before she figures it out and starts paying attention to the show.
Of course repetition breeds familiarity and after a few months he starts offering her coffee or a glass of water while they wait for the hero to show up and before you know it its been five years and they spend more time talking than he does fighting or threatening her. She's brought her lunch along a time or two when she was kidnapped on her way to spending her lunchbreak in the nearby park and they've definitely both eaten Minion's baking together so of course they aren't soulmates.
Even if you asked each of them and neither of them were able to pinpoint exactly when it was they confirmed this. Its been so long they have to have shared something.
Not everyone goes in for the whole Soulmate thing anyway. Some prefer hiking dates or just to not share food at all until it comes up naturally. Or just assuming that the possibility of a soulmate doesn’t mean you cant build a life and love with someone else.
Roxanne isn't in the world's greatest hurry to find her soulmate. If only because it will confirm once and for all that the feelings she has for a certain blue alien are never meant to be.
Its only a little crush. Just a forced proximity thing. Like a coworker you can objectively state is hot even if nothing is ever going to come of it because you are professional and this is a work environment and so what if he's brilliant and funny and incredibly handsome? Its not like he feels the same way about her.
Megamind knows for a fact his species had soulmates. He just assumed that being the only one left meant he wasn't going to find one on earth of all places. Its certainly not Miss Ritchi at any rate. Evil Gods how embarrassing that would have been, kidnapping the woman you were meant to spend the rest of your life with. He does hope they might still be able to exchange emails occasionally after she finds her soulmate. He's been working up the courage to ask her about exchanging addresses some day.
He's only a little bit madly in love with her. He's sure he'll get over it if when she finds her soulmate. Until then he'll just enjoy what little of her company he can.
The eighty first time they meet, after years and years of kidnappings, she tells him that the hero is off fighting wildfires interstate and is probably going to be a while. His shoulders slump and he asks if she'd like a cup of coffee while they wait and she offers some of the biscuits her coworker had just brought back as a souvenir from Japan that she had in her bag.
And there they sit, her in her chair, he in his. Discussing the weather and the life-cycle of the giant cuttlefish and everything in between as they drink coffee and eat matcha butter cookies.
They both reach for the last biscuit at the same time and Megamind pulls his hand back, "No it's yours," he waves and skids away on his chair to check on the status of the wildfires.
Roxanne snaps the last one in half and tosses it to him without thinking and he catches it without looking away from the screens, "So anyway, they all congregate in this place called Whyalla and-" she bites down on her half as he eats his.
And sweetness bursts on both of their tongues.
Really, after five years of kidnappings finding out a supervillain is your soulmate should have been more climactic.
"Oh." He says and turns to look at her in a mix of startled hope and fear.
"Oh." She echoes and licks the crumbs from her fingers because she's not quite sure what else to do.
"I guess I should untie you."
"I guess you should."
He makes short work of the ropes binding her waist and feet. She stretches and gets up and for a moment he thinks she's going to leave because she deserves better than this, better than him.
But she offers a hand to pull him to his feet and doesn't let go when he stands. Her hands are warm through the leather and she smells like coffee and sunshine.
"Um," she says smiling, and there is warmth and hope and impossibility blooming in both of their chests. "I hope you don't mind. But I'd really like to kiss you now."
"Mind?" He exclaims, "Mind! Miss Ritchi in what world would I ever mind kissing you, even if you weren't my soulmate!"
"You wanted to kiss me even if I wasn't your soulmate?" She asks, startled.
"Of course!"
"Oh," and she smiles again, "Good, me too." She lifts her hand to his cheek and guides him gently forward to press her lips to his. His mouth trembles against hers for a moment, and she realises he's laughing. Suddenly she's spinning in the air as he whirls her around with a shout and captures her lips again. She wraps her arms around his neck and she’s laughing too.
"I can't believe its you," he says in wonderment, drinking in the sight of her face like he's never really let himself look at her before.
Roxanne runs her hand over the curve of his skull and basks in his smile, delighting in the fact that of two whole planets entire galaxies apart they still managed to find one another and he's hers, hers, hers. "Me either," she says and kisses him again for good measure, "I just have one request,"
"Anything" he promises instantly.
"I think its time you started calling me Roxanne, don’t you?"

New Fic Sneak Peak - Fictitious
Because finals are kicking my actual ass and I still wanna share something. I’ll probably finish this first chapter on the flight home next week. Three month winter break here I come!! Also no context because I love confusion and so do my professors mwhahaha
The grin plastered on Vers face hadn’t faltered since she stepped off the communion platform. After six years of dedicated training and low-level reconnaissance missions, blood, sweat, and tears, she was finally, finally going to see real active duty! She probably looked like a maniac on the tube, a spring in her step and cheer oozing from her pores, not entirely Kree like. Not that she cared, if they had worked their way from nothing, no house-title, no clan, no assets, no rank, to being a member of the most coveted military program in the entire empire, they’d be happy too! She had added the extra route of going to  downtown Hala after her communion to get some of her favorite Kree-fusion pastries. A small luxury she had gladly handed units over for. She had probably spent too much on the treats, evident by her balancing two boxes in one hand and a bag of other groceries in the other. She smiles a bit extra as she pulls out a plate to arrange the desserts, stealing a jelly filled biscuit as she opens the boxes.
She turns her head over her shoulder as she hears the door swish open, “you’re home early.”
“I wanted to ensure that we’d be on time for dinner tonight, you know how my mother is about punctualness.”
She snides at the comment, “more than anyone, it’s me you're talking to remember?”
He moves beside her and sets his bags on the countertop, grabbing a pastry for himself, “I see you stopped by Kû’vãrs, what’s the occasion?”
“Oh nothing, I was just in the neighborhood,” she says slyly, the smirk on her face evident even as she continues on her task of arranging the food.
“The neighborhood that’s three stations past our stop?” he asks incredulously, leaning against the countertop.
“Got off at the wrong stop, I guess,” she fibs, keeping herself mum by picking out another pastry.
“Well,” he sighs sarcastically, “I guess the same goes for me.” He pulls out a bottle of expensive Kyrolorian Campagne only available at a small shop on the southside. She understands immediately.
“You knew?!” she says with her mouth still full but a wide smile on her face, slapping his shoulder playfully.
“I was one of the people who had to sign off!” Yon laughs, passing the bottle to her as he goes to grab a set of glasses from the cabinet.
“Well duh,” Vers says as she works the cork off, “but how’d you know it’d be today?”
“I had a feeling,” he smiles as she pops the cork. She fills their glasses in her typical fashion, heavy-handily and loosely. She settles herself in front of him and passes him a glass.
“Aren’t you going to say it?” she asks on her tiptoes so they can be face-to-face.
“Say what?”
She slips her free arm around his shoulder, “I don’t maybe, ‘congratulations, Vers?”
He kisses her briefly, adding sincerely “congratulations, Vers. I knew you could do it.”
She drones, “I had a good teacher.”
He hums in agreement as she takes a step back, holding her glass in front of him for a toast.
“Any wise words, Mr. Starforce?” she snides friskily.
“Don’t let it get to your head,” he warns lightly, but a tinge of sternness still seeps through, clinking their glasses. She waves him off.
“Me? Of course not!” she sips at her wine before adding, “well, maybe just a little.”

Sunday, 21 April 1839
7 55/’’
11 5/’’
(York) Fair but dullish morning Fahrenheit 50º in our bedroom at 8 1/2 a.m. – Gentle rain coming on at 11 55/’’ – Had the hair dresser (Shackleton) at 8 35/’’ to 9 40/’’ to cut and dress – (A-[Ann] and myself) – Breakfast at 10 10/’’ –
At 11 sent to say a Lady at the George Inn would be glad to see Dr. Belcombe as soon as he could come – A-‘s[Ann’s] consent still rather reluctant tho’ her bowels so obstinate she ought to have so good advice without further loss of time – Dr. B-[Belcombe] out – Will be back at one, and come –
A-[Ann] and I read the morning service (without litany and communion service and, having only a New Testament, read only the 2d.[2nd] lesson) in about 25 minutes at 11 1/4 to 11 40/’’ – Then talked a little and wrote the above of this morning and wrote latter part of 8th and 9th 10th 11th inst. of rough draft of index and helped A-[Ann] with hers to begin it on the plan of mine – Then talked a little –
Dr. Belcombe came soon after 1 for 5 minutes – Going into the country – Will come again at 8 this evening – A-[Ann] read 4 pp.[pages] of French – Had wine and biscuit (our own) at 2 –
We went out at 3 35/’’ – Over the bridge into Micklegate, and turned just below Mrs. Willey’s towards the rail road – Looked about at the old house of correction nearly all taken down – The site wanted for rail road purposes – Part of the building now the ‘Rail-road Office’ – Then sauntered along the walls from the rail-road arch thro’ there down to the river and back – And then called and sat about fifty minutes with Mr. and Mrs. Duffin till 5 10/’’ –
He not confined to his bed as the hair dresser had told us this morning but in 2d.[2nd] childhood apparently confined to his great easy chair in the back sitting room – Yet he recognised me at once – Mrs. D-[Duffin kept us talking till he inquired what o’clock it was impatient for his dinner which he always has at 5 –
Talked over (explanation of the not settling and now perhaps being sorry) John Dixon’s leaving us – Mrs. D-[Duffin] thought he was settled for life, and so did all his friends – he had written over very good accounts – Mr. Colin Johnson recently dead (husband of the [cidevant] Miss Maria Duffin) – Mr. D-[Duffin] had not been told of it – Would do no good to tell him –
Asked if I had examined the papers respecting Eliza Raine’s will – Yes! Had brought over the vol.[volume] of journal of the time from Paris – A particular entry (vide 28 June 1826) of having given the will to Mr. Duffin in Mr. Jonathan Gray’s presence, Mr. D-[Duffin] objecting to its being given to Mr. Robert Swann, saying that R.[Robert] S.[Swann] was his executor and would get all his papers at the last, so that giving it to him (Mr. D-[Duffin]) would be the same thing –
I quietly observed that it was of no sort of consequence, but that, as both the wills were put together, I concluded that when Mrs. D-[Duffin] burnt the one in favour of Captain A-[Alexander] she had, by mistake, burnt the other also – Oh! No! Sure she had not – She had only found the one in favour of Captain A-[Alexander] had read it over and was quite sure she had only burnt that one – I said it was odd how they had got separated – She then said Mr. Duffin had had a great burning that time – She had remonstrated – Was afraid he was burning things that might be of consequence, but he said Oh! No! They only littered the drawer – She had told Duckett to watch when his master was burning and let her know – It was before she was married when his faculties were quite clear that he must have known what he was doing –
I then reminded Mrs. D-[Duffin] of the misunderstanding there had been between Mr. D-[Duffin] and myself about that time said perhaps nobody knew this temper better than she and I did – He had been annoyed at being asked for the will, and at giving it me, and it was possible that he might have destroyed it not unknowingly –
Mrs. [Duffin] did not say anything against this but said it was a pity – I said it was of no consequence to me – I was really indifferent about it – But that if such a thing had been done it was a temporary littleness unworthy of the person; and the manner in which the thing was was a greater pity than the thing itself – Mrs. D-[Duffin] said she was very sorry – I bade never think more of it – She will be over the bridge about one tomorrow – If she finds us at home she is to see the diary of the time and judge for herself –
On returning rapped at the Norcliffes’ door at 5 25/’’ – Dressing for dinner [therefore] did not go in – Left my name and inquiries and address at the George Inn –
Meant to have peeped into the Minster but not open – Home at 5 35/’’ – Washed hands – Dinner at 6 10/’’ mock turtle soup and smelts-roast loin of mutton and potatoes and cauliflower and bread pudding and tart and jellies and stilton cheese and a bottle of old Madeira alias Teneriffe good and old – Sat talking – A-[Ann] better –
Wrote and sent at 8 1/2 the following note to ‘Mr. Harper, St. Leonards Place’:
‘Mrs. Lister will be glad to see Mr. Harper at 11 tomorrow morning, if that hour be convenient to him. George Inn. Sunday evening 21 April 1839’
at this moment (8 1/2) Dr. Belcombe came and staid near an hour –
Long questioning of A-[Ann] as to the eruption on her face – To come at 9 1/2 a.m. tomorrow to examine her side &c. in bed pot and all            A[Ann] does not like it        never liked him so little         he had certainly his quantum sufficit of medical practice humbug  wrote down symptoms                        he asked me if there was any scrofulous taint in the family          no        I think he sees it to the case of her nervous lowness  shall I get worn out with it?
Dr. B-‘s[Belcombe’s] daughter Mariana an exotic – A constant cough – But he thinks it the result of nervous irritation rather than pulmonary –
He went away at 9 25/’’ – Then till near 10 wrote the whole of this p.[page] – finish dullish day – A little gentle rain about noon (vide line 1 of today) – Fahrenheit 52º at 11 in our bedroom
[symbols in the margin of the page:] ✓c       ✓c       N
[in the margin:]          E.[Eliza] R-‘s[Raine’s] will.

15. Random fact: Watching Naruto Shippuden with my little sister is the highlight of my day. I never expected to get this emotionally attached to these characters but here I am calling everyone my son or snapping my fingers at my girl Sakura for being awesome. Bonus fact: I started watching Naruto because some creeper who was interested in me suggested I watch it. That was the only good thing that I got from that acquaintanceship.

“I’m glad you noticed!” says Olly Alexander with one of his impish smiles. “I’ve come a long way since then.” We’re talking about the difference between the first time I saw him sing with his band, Years & Years, and the strutting peacock that he has since become. In 2015, fresh from winning the BBC Sound Of . . . poll, Alexander had a mean falsetto and a clutch of killer synth-pop ditties (Shine, King), but he cut a diffident figure during his show at the Heaven nightclub, dressed down in a T-shirt and beanie.
The second time I saw him, a year later, he was rising on a hydraulic lift through the stage of a rapturous Wembley Arena, wearing a red tunic with silver shoulder pads, and garlanded with laser beams. Alexander’s ascent to serious, tabloid-baiting stardom continues. Years & Years have a dazzling album out this week and days before we meet he was on Graham Norton’s sofa, regaling Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock with the story of how Meteorite, the song he wrote for Bridget Jones’s Baby, was about “a big dick”. Diffident no longer.
“Looking back, it’s quite overwhelming,” says Alexander, 27, as he lunches on quinoa in a restaurant in King’s Cross, north London. He is slight and conspiratorial, with tiny safety pins through his ears, a ring through his nose and his cropped hair dyed scarlet. “At first you really don’t know what support from an audience is going to feel like. But when people started showing their support for me being honest and being a camp, gay frontman — I just never really expected it and it added so much fuel to my fire.”
Among the things he has eloquently spoken out on are LGBTQ rights (he presented a BBC Three documentary called Growing Up Gay), mental health (he extols the virtues of therapy, which he started pre-emptively, before he became famous) and bullying (at school in Gloucestershire he was regularly “bushed”: thrown into the bushes next to the assembly hall). He is far more vocal than he was at the start of his music career, when an industry person advised him not to talk about being gay. “She was, like, ‘Why do people need to know your sexuality?’ She wanted to protect me.”
Well, it turned out that he didn’t need protection, he needed confidence. That came with experience and a changing musical landscape in which artists as diverse as Janelle Monáe, Christine and the Queens, Frank Ocean and Perfume Genius felt able to be candid about their sexuality. “It’s quite astonishing,” Alexander says. “We’re seeing a lot more visible queer artists and visible gay people.”
Pop has been missing male stars with strong views, especially those with a sense of theatre; it’s all uber-polite George Ezra or anti-glamorous Ed Sheeran. “It has its place, having someone who’s not dressed up,” Alexander says, trying to be diplomatic. “But the thing I love most about pop music is the fantasy, the escapism. I had this moment when I realised I’m in the best place to engineer that for myself. I realised you could go as far as you want on stage.”
A few weeks ago at Radio 1’s Biggest Weekend in Swansea he wore a lime-green Freddie Mercury leotard and led an onstage conga of his dancers, who seemed to be styled as drugged-up zombies. It felt like a long way from Mike Read and Bruno Brookes. “There was a point where I realised if you embody supreme confidence, you can get away with anything,” Alexander says. “It is quite a religious experience for me, to be on stage.”
Religion is a bit of a theme for Years & Years, whose other members are the keyboard player Emre Türkmen and the bassist Mikey Goldsworthy. Their first album was called Communion and their new one is entitled Palo Santo, after a mystical South American tree burnt as incense. Its literal translation, “holy wood”, joins the dots between spiritualism and smut (“It’s a Carry On album!” Alexander says with a giggle). So too does the recent single, Sanctify, partly inspired by a relationship with a straight-acting man, which refers to two very different things that one can do on one’s knees. “See?” Alexander says, turning to his publicist, who is sitting near by. “Ed gets it!”
He has always been into spiritualism and the occult, he says, albeit in a slightly sceptical way. “The first place I ever had a job was in this shop called Moonstones — it sold gemstones, pagan spellbooks and chocolate dildos.” He grew up loving fairytales and fantasy fiction: Lord of the Rings, The Magic Faraway Tree, Harry Potter. You can see why he might have wanted to escape to other worlds, such was the rotten time he sometimes had at school, where he was mocked and sometimes “bushed” for wearing eyeliner, nail varnish and choker necklaces.
Has being a posterboy for LGBTQ and anti-bullying issues become a burden? He gets Instagram messages from fans every day. “It doesn’t feel like a burden. I think it would be more of a burden to not acknowledge any of that. But I’ve had to learn the ways to cope with my own mental health along the way, and I feel like I’m in a good position now, but if you’re having a bad day and you’re suddenly having to talk about things that you experienced when you were 13 years old, it can feel a bit challenging.”
He’s talking about the break-up of his mother, who ran community craft groups, from his father, who worked at amusement parks, but, tellingly, dreamt of being a musician. After the split Alexander moved to Gloucestershire with his mother and brother; his father has only been in contact sporadically. Alexander has sometimes shied away from the subject because “I was trying to protect him, and I was, like, ‘Why am I still trying to protect someone who hasn’t been in my life for over a decade and who’s actually very difficult and caused a lot of pain to my family?’ ”
They hadn’t been in touch for seven years when his father broke the silence in wincing fashion, by tweeting him. Matters got worse when Alexander’s fans started replying to his dad, even trolling him. It sounds horrific. He has seen him once since then, last year. “It was quite triggering,” he says. “I just couldn’t deal with it at the time, it was too overwhelming.”
Social media can be a perilous place for him, especially deciding what to keep private. “I’ve always been fairly ‘Here’s everything!’ ” He’s also prone to “stalking someone that I fancy, and then getting upset because they like so-and-so’s picture and not mine”.
Yet the lure of Instagram can be irresistible. Take his appearance on The Graham Norton Show, when he met Rihanna, one of his heroes, and posted a picture of them backstage, in which he wears an expression of volcanic ecstasy. He was more nervous about meeting Ri-Ri than he was about singing on the show, he says, but she was lovely. “She was, like, ‘My fans love you.’ I feel like we’re destined to be friends.”
Or, perhaps, rivals. Palo Santo, with its mega-hooks, shimmering melodies and sumptuous production, is an album built to take on the superstar Americans at their own game. It was inspired by the R&B and pop that Alexander grew up on: Timberland, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and, before them, Prince and Michael Jackson.
He’s a better fit for music than he was for his first, slightly accidental career as an actor. “It just feels like people can express their identity easier as artists in the music industry.” Still, acting was where he initially made his mark, straight out of school, first in the film Summerhill and later playing a Bullingdon-style posho in The Riot Club, Herbert Pocket in David Nicholls’s TV adaptation of Great Expectations, and a stage role in Michael Grandage’s Peter and Alice, during which he befriended Judi Dench.
He was quite intimidated, but Dench turned out to be “very cheeky. One day she brought in biscuits that had dicks and balls on them; she was, like, ‘Do you want a cock biscuit?’ ” She has since narrated a short film to accompany Years & Years’s new album.
Acting has some happy associations for him, then, but “Hollywood is the worst culprit” when it comes to diversity, he says. “It’s just so far behind the times, it’s disgusting.” He even felt a subtle pressure not to reveal his sexuality on God Help the Girl, a low-budget British indie film directed by Stuart Murdoch of the band Belle & Sebastian, in which Alexander played a straight musician.
“It gave me a lot of anxiety. It was one of the reasons I wanted to stop acting. I definitely felt at the time it was something you had to be quiet about, because otherwise directors wouldn’t believe you could pull off the part.” That was nothing to do with Murdoch, he stresses. “I got on with Stuart really well, and I felt guilty because I never told him I was gay. I kind of tried to play up to the fact that I could actually be straight still, based on lies, even though everyone else knew I was gay.” During the shoot he met a man in a club. “After filming every day I’d just go straight to his house and spend the night with him. You just feel like you’re living a bit of a double life.”
I tell him my editor will tell me off if I don’t ask about his romantic status. “I’m single,” he replies with a smile. “Let everyone know, including your editor! Is he gay? It’s a she? Maybe she has gay friends. Yeah, I am happily single. It’s been like . . . almost two years. Not that I’ve been a nun in that time, I would like to stress.” Celebrity is double-sided in that regard: adulation on one hand, lack of anonymity on the other. “It obviously has positives,” he says with a smile, “but my sex life’s taken quite a beating.”
Don’t buy the mock self-pity — Alexander is doing just fine. There’s the stellar album and an arena tour in the autumn. Nor have his experiences put him off acting. “I feel like I could do something really, really fun and weird, like play an alien,” he says. “Or, you know, a goblin king!” From dressed-down diffidence to a budding Bowie in three years: he really has come a long way.
Palo Santo is released tomorrow on Polydor. Years & Years play the Roundhouse, London, July 10; Manchester Arena, July 14 and tour the UK from November

Years & Years’s Olly Alexander: ‘Celebrity has positives, but my sex life’s taken quite a beating’
Olly Alexander is Britain’s most exciting new pop star, but the Years & Years singer has also become a poster boy for social change

6 1/4
2 10/60
my bowels tolerably well – sat half asleep near half an hour on the pot – the washer woman came at 8 1/2 – settled with her in 5 minutes –
at my desk at 8 35/60 – wrote the 2 last lines – read over Marian’s letter – from 7 55/60 to 10, wrote 2 pages and the ends, and under the seal to Marian – glad of the good account of themselves – so will not dwell upon the disagreeable intelligence of Northgate not being likely to let – trust Marian speaks generally, and has no reason to apply particularly to me what she observed about its being ‘very necessary if not absolutely necessary for a person of moderate fortune to live not very distant from their inheritance’ – If she or my father thought my presence necessary of course they would tell me so –
‘we are now so comfortably settled, that I should have no difficulty in leaving my aunt for any length of time, that could be necessary – In fact, from harass, or anxiety, or 1 thing or other, I have been a little out of sorts lately, and mean to change the air a little by and by – what we shall do next year, it is as yet quite impossible to say – my aunt’s general health is certainly better here, than it was, or than those, who ought to know best, thought it would be, in England: – but I do not mean to say, that the complaint is, or is likely to be, driven away from her limbs – However by next spring, she will be better able to judge for herself – to me, so long as we are sufficiently within reach of our affairs, it is matter of indifference where we live – It is possible to be happy anywhere, if the mind be right – the loss of those whom we have all our lives been accustomed to see, is a greater loss than we may have imagined till it has been been tried; but even this may be got over, if there be adequate reason for it – I suspect that, as you grow older, you will let slip many of your own schemes of going here and there – Perhaps you have already 1/2 forgotten many of your dreams about St. Petersbourgh etc – ‘a rolling stone gathers no moss’ – If moss stands for money, nothing can be more true – we do pay dear for most things; and there are many things cheaper in England than here: – but we have no doctors’ bills to pay as yet; and perhaps we should not have saved much at the year’s end by going to any place in England, which has yet occurred to us – But saving is not the question – I am only anxious to do what is best for my aunt; and whatever she even fancies, be it what it may, we shall try – send our remembrances particularly to Mrs V– (Veitch) with a kind message from my aunt, and remembrances to all the principal of our connaissances – make what use you like of my remembrances at Market W– (Weighton); but do not forget Mrs Skelding – I conclude Mrs I– (Inman) is still at Lancaster – if they go to Hull to give my thanks etc to Mrs Knight for the Euripides Medea by Parson given me in remembrance of Mr K– (Knight)
mention the reports in the French papers of yesterday (Journal des Debats) of Mr Canning’s being prime minister and to make his own cabinet – and how all the liberal French are delighted – read over my letter wrote the above (except the 1st 1 1/2 lines) folded and directed my letter to ‘Miss Marian Lister Shibden hall, H–x (Halifax), Yorkshire Angleterre, post payé’ and sent it in to my aunt to read all which took me till 10 40/60 –
from then to 11 10/60 at breakfast – then sent back volume 10 Anquetils précis de l’histoire universelle ‘à Madame Madame Sené avec les compliments and les remerciennes de Mademoiselle Lister’ written on the paper in which the back was folded – then sent off my letter to Marian (vide 4th line above) at 11 20/60 – then finish dressing –
Talking to my aunt – considering what things should be got, etc etc went out at 1 – Took George with me – bought several things at Bertrand’s – Sardines à l’huile not in season – for they should be fresh to be put in oil (and Bertrand had not any), and would not come in of 3 months – En passant chez Lesueur (rue des Petit Champs No. Number 31.) saw some nice looking beef (ribs) asked the price 10 sols a lb. (pound) – bought 6 1/2 lbs. (pounds) they were giving me a lb. (pound) of rejouissance at 9 sols – would not have – then must pay 1 sol a lb. (pound) more for the beef – did so – asked the price of mutton – 14 sols a lb. (pound) – nice but not so small as Mignand’s –
just before entering the place des Victoires turned to the right down to the passage Verododat – thro’ it, and came out into the rue St. Honoré opposite the oration – En passant went into No. 82 rue St. Denis près celle des Lombards – large wholesale confections shop – only asked me 3/50 a lb. (pound) for fine chinois, the same for apricots – the latter not yet egouttés – bought a lb. (pound) of the former determining to make this my shop – for marmalade d’abricots and all such things 2/. a lb. (pound) – the little pots I buy said to contain 3 oz. (ounces) less than a lb. (pound) – 2 francs a lb. (pound) = 2 1/2 sols an oz (ounce) – at this rate I am right to buy of Bertrand’s – I only give 32 sols. for 13 oz. (ounces) and have the pot – from the confection’s (B. Perrot Pezé), to No. 1. rue des Lombards – bought 3 lbs. (pounds) tea, and sent home George –
sauntered down the rue d’Arcis, and to the Marché au Gibier – a woman asked me 18 sols for fineish skewered pigeons (Bertrand said I ought to have very good at 1/. but there from 14 sols to 30 sols!), I could have got them easily for 15 sols, but only offered 12 sols – then strolled along the Quais looking at prints and maps as I passed – the troops reviewed by the king today in the Champ de Mars – a crowd about the port royal (de Louis 16) etc – thro‘ the gardens – just got under the arcade in time (at 4) to Escape a shower – detained there perhaps 20 minutes – the channels in the streets full of water – obliged to cross (from the rue neuve de Luxembourg) over the little communion show in the rue Richepanse – beginning to rain again just before I got home –
came in at 4 1/2 – Monsieur and Madame Sené with my aunt in her bedroom about her bed on account of bugs – they must come from MacDonald’s bed – Madame S– (Sené) now recollects the nurse had this bed once (last year) in a 4rième when they were from home, and she complained much of bugs – the bois de lit is to be taken away and MacDonald to have another – all very civil – talked a while to my aunt –
came to my room at 4 50/60 – wrote the last 20 lines – settled with George, – and went out (to Mrs B–‘s Barlow’s to dine) at 5 35/60 sent George at 5 20/60 to be then to wait till 7 and then come back to my aunt – washed my hands and changed shoes and stockings at Mrs B–‘s (Barlow’s) – Miss Gauntlet had been there some time –

Heart Like Mine - or, Bitty finds himself in a McDonald’s on a lonely, Wednesday evening
[Part of the Blue-Eyed Jack ‘verse - Takes place in Nashville, long before Jack and Bitty meet...]
CW: mentions of homophobia, running away, vague mentions of homelessness, a very very lonely boy reconsiders his life choices, hopeful ending i promise
AN: So I was listening to Emily’s FANTASTIC playlist she made for Bitty in this universe and actually started crying at work thinking about Bitty when Heart Like Mine came on, so I had to write this little piece.
Cause I heard Jesus He drank wine And I bet we'd get along just fine He could calm a storm and heal the blind And I bet He'd understand a heart like mine
-Miranda Lambert, Heart Like Mine
Eric didn’t know why he was here.
And — gosh — it was weird to think of himself as Eric, but that was the only name people knew him by in Nashville. He grew up as Baby and Dicky and Junior, as Sweetheart and Boo Boo and Champ. He went by other names as he got older, crueler names hissed at him in hallway at school, shouted at him from across the street. The kids in first grade called him Little Bittle, but even that seemed preferable to Eric in this moment. Eric was the lonely name of a lonely boy hundreds of miles away from a place he couldn’t call home. But it was the only name he had anymore.
It still didn’t explain why he felt the need to wander into a random church on a rainy, Wednesday evening.
Back in Georgia, Eric had attended church every single Sunday with his mama and Coach. He took communion with half the town, and it was the one moment in the whole week he felt like he was one of them. The reverend didn’t have the nicest things to say about boys like him, but when he spoke of love and peace and turning the other cheek, Eric felt like he could survive Madison and come out the other side a better person than he’d been before.
Well, he’d survived. But he’d become someone he didn’t know, someone who left in the middle of the night with no goodbye, save for the note on the kitchen table that read, I’m sorry. I love you. Don’t look for me.
Eric hadn’t signed it; that was the moment he shed all the names of his past, like he’d scraped off a snakeskin on the doorframe as he walked away.
Now that he sat here, in the back pew of an empty church, shivering under the blast of the A/C, Eric wondered if he’d ever grow his new skin, or if he’d feel this raw and tender forever.
In the lobby, he could hear someone vacuuming the carpet. Somehow it comforted Eric to know he wasn’t the only person in the building. He thought he’d come here to find God, to have one of those religious epiphanies that only happens when you’re the only one for miles, but maybe he’d just been looking for home.
“This is dumb,” he murmured, standing too quickly. He’d worked long and hard today — construction jobs were ruthless but paid better than the shitty tips he’d been getting at TGI Friday’s — and hadn’t eaten since breakfast. The world spun as he stumbled back out of the church, face and hands going cold and numb. The rain was coming down harder now, and Eric was just grateful he’d managed to save up enough to rent a closet-sized room in a sketchy sublease. Maybe he’d stop by a Bojangles and treat himself to chicken and biscuits, if only to fill his stomach better than a ramen pack would.
Eric didn’t find a Bojangles anywhere between the church and his apartment, to his disappointment, but he did find a McDonald’s, which was almost as good. The food was hot and salty and made him forget his aching muscles or the fact that after living in Nashville for several months he’d yet to land any sort of gig — not even at an old folks’ home or at an open-mic. The best he’d done was the day a kind woman dropped a twenty in his open guitar case as he busked on the Strip — one of ten curbside singers in a five-block radius. Maybe he’d have had more luck hitchhiking down to Austin to try his luck among the Willie Nelson- and Stevie Ray Vaughan-wannabes. But Eric couldn’t imagine having more than one state line between him and the family he’d left behind, as far away as he felt now.
“Give me a sign,” he said, staring down at his half-eaten burger and fries. “Give me a sign to give up and move on with my life.”
Eric didn’t know if he was speaking to God or the universe or the spirit of the cow that was now his dinner, but it didn’t matter. He’d take anything as an omen now, take any sort of permission to let his dreams die and move on from the bright lights of Nashville.
“Hey, uh, do you mind if I sit here? I don’t really want to eat alone.”
Eric looked up into warm, brown eyes peering down at him curiously. They belonged a boy — no, a young man — who couldn’t have been much older than Eric himself. He wore one of those Best Buy ‘Geek Squad’ polos and looked as worn as Eric felt, but his smile was bright and kind.
“Sure,” Eric said, voice coming out as more of a surprised squeak. “I’m- I’m Eric.”
“Abel,” the man said. He sat down in the seat across from Eric, setting down his tray. “And thanks. I was gonna take this home, but my roommates are out and I guess I just wasn’t ready to sit in an empty apartment by myself.”
There was a loneliness in Abel’s eyes that felt achingly familiar. Eric nodded in understanding.
“I’m grateful for the company,” he said, picking at the seeds on his bun. “I was feelin’ a bit lonely myself.”
Abel smiled at him and they dug into their meals in a comfortable silence. After a couple minutes, Abel swallowed a large mouthful of burger and asked, “So, Eric, what do you do?”
Ah, the horrors of smalltalk. “Oh, um, right now I’m working in construction. S’the best work I could find. Been thinking ‘bout saving up to take a class or something, maybe get into something vocational.” He nodded at Abel’s shirt. “Never really had booksmarts. ‘C’s get degrees’ and all that.” He laughed nervously.
“You know anything about bartending?” Abel asked. “My cousin’s got a little dive near here, he’s looking for a bartender. Pays decently, not nearly as dangerous as construction.”
“Sadly, no,” Eric said with a shrug. “Only time I’ve ever spent in bars has been going to shows. I’m only 19.”
“That’s old enough for plenty of people,” Abel said, not unkindly. “What shows do you go to?”
Eric shrugged, popping a french fry into his mouth. “Mostly country, lots of up-and-coming singers and bands. Sometimes more indie stuff, but country’s my thing, for better or worse.”
“You a singer?” Abel asked around a mouthful of food. When Eric nodded, he continued, “You should sign up for the open mic battle at Black-Eyed Susan’s — it’s this terrible bar that only stays open because it hosts really fun competitions and shows and stuff.”
“Oh.” Eric sat a little straighter. This wasn’t the sign he’d asked for at all, but he’d be a fool not to see it as the opportunity it was. “Yeah, that’d be- that’d be great.”
“Here,” Abel pulled a pen from his pocket and scribbled vague directions down on a napkin. “I forget the address, but it’s not that far from here. If you talk to a girl named Jenny, tell her I sent you.” He paused, smiling goofily. “That’s my sister. She’s the best.”
Eric laughed. “I’m sure she is. Thank you, this is- I walked in here ready to give up and you really turned my night around.”
Abel shrugged, looking embarrassed. “It’s nothing. I thought I’d be eating by myself and now I have a new friend. Sometimes magical things can happen in a McDonald’s on a rainy day, Eric.”
But it wasn’t magic, or even divine intervention. The universe didn’t really care what happened to Eric, but maybe Nashville would.
“Call me Bitty,” he said after a moment. Itty Bitty Bittle, he could hear the boys in the locker room jeering, but the memory didn’t hurt like it once had. He’d show them; he’d show them all what Bitty could do. “No one’s ever really called me Eric. I go by Bitty.”
Abel shrugged and smiled and said, “Well, then, it’s real nice to meet you, Bitty. I really can’t wait to hear you sing.”

Ideas for Making Bread Without Yeast
Making homemade bread does not mean you have to scrounge around to find yeast. This is a list of ways for making all sorts of delicious baked goods and breads without commercial baker’s yeast.
Did I ever think I’d live through a yeast shortage?
Uh, nope.
Unfortunately, with the rise in all things baking lately, finding supplies for making bread has been especially challenging. However, I’ve found that when the grocery stores just don’t have the supplies like usual, that just means it’s time to bring out some old-fashioned homesteader ingenuity.
In fact, I’ve been rather enjoying the chance to think outside of the box lately, whether I’m researching toilet paper alternatives (who knew that would be in the 2020 plans?) or trying to remember how to grind wheat berries so I can have flour again.
And for some reason, while the grocery stores have been slowly trickling in some increased supplies of flour, I’m not finding yeast anywhere quite yet.
But it’s all good, because I’ve gathered together this list of types of bread recipes that don’t require yeast. Because let’s face it– humans have been making bread for THOUSANDS of years without commercial baker’s yeast. We can do this, friend.
So whether you’re a bread-making baking expert with a yeast shortage or a newbie to from-scratch cooking, this list of breads without commercial yeast will creatively challenge you and help you make plenty of tasty breads for your family.
How to Make Bread Without Yeast
1. Sourdough Bread
Technically not “yeast free”, sourdough bread is made with captured wild yeast (aka the sourdough starter) which is simply flour and water that ferments for 5-14 days before it is active and ready to use. One of the awesome things about making your own wild yeast and sourdough bread is that you can use the discards after feeding your sourdough starter to make other delicious foods for your family, including crackers and pancakes.
I’ve been leaning heavily on my sourdough lately and I have a bunch of helpful articles for you:
Learn how to make a sourdough starter (includes a video)
Learn how to make a simple sourdough bread (includes a video)
Here’s my article on troubleshooting sourdough (I answer every possible sourdough question)

2. Sprouted Grain Bread
I love growing sprouts made from vegetable seeds as a crunchy and nutritious addition to my sandwiches, but did you know you can also make sprouts from grains? Sprouted grain bread is also known as Essene bread. Some variations of sprouted grain breads go by names like Ezekial bread and Manna bread.
This is an ancient way for making bread that uses sprouted grains (quinoa, rye, etc.) and often dried fruits and nuts are added to the dough as well. It’s a sweeter bread, especially if you add dried fruit to it. Many modern sprouted grain bread recipes now add commercial yeast to the list of ingredients, but I have found a few that try to be pretty traditional. Check out this step-by-step instructions for Sprouted Grain Bread from Mother Earth News or this beautiful Sprouted Manna Bread recipe from Wholehearted Eats.

3. Irish Soda Bread
An Irish Soda Bread is traditionally made with baking soda, flour, salt, and buttermilk. The bread rises from the baking soda instead of using traditional yeast (hence the ‘soda’ part of the name). The cool thing about soda bread is that it doesn’t need extra time for rising, so it’s a quick and easy bread to make for dinner. It is a hearty and thick bread, much like sourdough, so it’s perfect for dunking into soups and stews.
Don’t forget you can serve your homemade soda bread with your homemade corned beef. And you can make it even more authentic by making your own homemade buttermilk (seriously, once you have homemade buttermilk, you’ll never want the stuff from the store again!).
I found a few tasty non-yeast Irish soda bread recipes for you to try. This Irish Soda Bread recipe by Recipe Tin Eats uses traditional buttermilk, but if you can’t find buttermilk right now, you can try this Yogurt version of Irish Soda Bread by Jo’s Kitchen Larder.
4. Unleavened Bread
Unleavened bread is made without any rising agents, so it’s usually simply flour, water, and salt. It is a traditional bread used by Jewish and Christian communities for Passover (aka Matzah bread) and for communion (as wafers).
Since it has no rising agents, it’s super quick and easy to make and requires no proofing (or rising) time. However, it also means that this is a flatbread, which can be delicious alongside hummus or some sort of dip or sauce. This unleavened bread recipe by Alyona’s Cooking looks amazing.
5. Homemade Biscuits
Biscuits remain one of my favorite go-tos when I need a bread side with supper. They are great for sopping up gravy or broths, and they’re equally delicious with butter and jam.  (P.S. Homemade biscuits were one of the very first things I learned to make from scratch.)
An old-fashioned biscuit will rise due to the baking powder or other rising agents, so yeast isn’t a necessity. My buttermilk biscuits recipe is a staple at our homestead table, especially for big meals like Thanksgiving and Christmas. In a pinch, you can make some hearty mini-sandwiches out of them to make a great lunch.
6. Flatbread and Naan Bread
Flatbread is similar to unleavened bread recipes except that flatbread recipes can be more versatile. Unleavened breads, since they are tied to religious practices, have limited ingredients. Meanwhile, you can have more creativity with flatbreads and naan breads with herbs and spices, different cooking oils, etc.
Naan bread is slightly different than other flatbread recipes because it has a heavy use of baking powder in the recipes. This makes naan bread fluffy and soft. You’ll find both yeast-filled and non-yeast recipes for flatbreads and naan bread. I thought this Quick No Yeast Flatbread recipe from Let’s Dish Recipes looks super simple and tasty and I also liked this No-Yeast Naan recipe from The Kitchen Paper.
7. Quick Breads
If you need some side dishes for meals to help fill up hungry kids (they can be ravenous!), in a pinch, you can always start making quick breads. Try making banana bread, zucchini bread, pumpkin bread, and/or cornbread to fill up the dinner plate. There are tons of delicious and creative quick bread ideas out there.
I personally love my Honey Maple Pumpkin Bread recipe (even when it’s not October…I know, I’m a rebel). Also, don’t forget about zucchini bread this summer, especially if you’re growing fast growing vegetables like zucchini in your garden. Try my chocolate zucchini bread recipe with your excess zucchini, it’s amazing.
8. Beer Bread
If you don’t have yeast packets or wild yeast around, you can always get your yeast from another common item – beer. Beer bread is incredibly easy to make and pretty hard to mess up (I love recipes like that). You simply mix all of the ingredients in a bowl, pour into a bread loaf pan, and bake. Beer bread is a dense loaf, and it has a tangy taste similar to sourdough. It’s perfect slathered with butter or for dipping into soups and stews.
Some beer bread recipes call specifically for self-rising flour, but I found a few that use basic all-purpose flour instead. This simple Beer Bread recipe from Striped Spatula uses only 6 ingredients and she has lots of tips on substitutions if you’re need to swap out things. Also, this Honey Beer Bread recipe by Julie Blanner only takes 5 minutes to put together and I love that it includes honey.
Final Thoughts on Making Bread Without Yeast
So am I rationing my small supply of yeast at the moment? Sure. But I’m actually thankful for the chance to get out of my “baker’s yeast” comfort zone. And isn’t that really what homesteading is all about anyway? Making do with what we have.
Of course, if you truly miss yeast, there are a few ways to make yeast at home (besides a sourdough starter). This article by The Survival Mom talks about how to make yeast from potatoes and also from fruit, though I’ve seen some comments on facebook that these yeasts are tough to get right.
