So I saw this post while browsing toa tags the other day. While I don’t think being obsessed with the school mascot automatically makes Toby a furry (though it is funny to joke about lol) since “being a furry” actually just means “being a fan of anthropomorphic animals” and doesn’t necessarily require any form of costuming or interest in such, it did get me thinking, hmmm...if he was a furry, what would his fursona be? 🤔 And from there I started wondering what Jim’s and Claire’s would be as well because y not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

BUT WAIT, I hear you say--haven’t you already drawn the trio as werewolves and wolfwalkers etc.? Wouldn’t those be their fursonas??

Well yes....but actually no.

I guess it’s a little hard to explain, but there’s a nuance between “[person] but as an animal” and a proper “fursona”. While a fursona is an animal character used to represent its person, it doesn’t have to physically resemble them at all as you would expect [person]-but-as-[animal] to. For example, if you were to design me but as a cat, you’d probably give it light brown fur and green eyes like I have irl. But my fursona, unlike my human self, actually has blue fur and purple eyes. You can give your fursona matching physical traits to your own if you want to, and some people do, but most use only a pinch of their irl appearance, if any at all.

The choices people make when designing their fursonas vary wildly from “it looks like me irl” to “it looks like who I want to be” to “I just really like this color scheme” to “this particular color/marking holds deep personal meaning to me” to “this particular pattern represents a particular defining moment in my life” to “idk it looks cool and i vibe with it” etc. etc. etc. Everyone has different reasons of varying depth for the decisions they make in designing their fursona.

Therefore, to design a fursona for Toby etc., it’s less a question of “what would this character look like as [insert species here]?” and more of “how would this character choose to present himself with his own [animal] character?”

And that’s a much trickier game than just transferring a character aesthetic to a new species. ^^; We have to kinda dive into the characters and makes some guesses about how they, if given infinite creative freedom to design an animal avatar with no rules or limits, would choose to present themselves.

So all that said, here’s what I came up with:

Starting with Toby because he’s the one who inspired the post. I think Toby might choose a wolfdog fursona. A lot of people who choose wolves as fursonas consider themselves to be overwhelmingly loyal to their friends, a trait that fits Toby very well. However, while Toby likes to be “cool”, I don’t think he really thinks of himself as much of an “alpha” type--he’s more of a sidekick, and he knows that, and he’s ok with that. He’s the wingman. So what better way to incorporate that than to add dog into the mix? Man’s best friend=Jim’s best friend. Sociable, humorous, and unwaveringly loyal. Wolfdog it is!

With the species decided, we can move on to the design itself.

I can’t imagine any form of Toby in anything other than warm colors. This is extra emphasized by the flamelike patterns on his legs and tail, which both speaks to his desire to be totally awesome-sauce as well as acts as an allusion to his flaming warhammer. It’s fairly common (not universal, but common) for people to give their fursonas a more “ideal” physique than the person actually has as a sort of way to live by proxy physical goals or fantasies they’ve been unable to attain irl for whatever reason. Given that we’ve seen Toby struggle with fitness from time to time, it wouldn’t shock me to see him take this route. His wolfdog self is still relatively short and stocky, but it’s all muscle, babey.

This fursona is strong, fun, boisterous, and generally just kicks butt. Concentrated awesomesauce flows through his veins. Just don't mess with his friends, or you’ll feel the flames!

Moving on to Jim. Jim was the hardest to nail down, and most definitely the hardest to keep my personal biases out of oof. Which I may have failed to do anways because yes, ok, I made my favorite character a blue feline, sue me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But hear me out first!

For Jim I ultimately settling on a cheetah/lion hybrid.

Cheetahs, in a way, are sort of the underdogs (er...cats?) of the feline world--at least, in their local ecosystems. They are built wholly for speed, not strength--and as such, just about every other large predator in their environment has them beat when it comes to raw strength. Remind you of a certain Trollhunter? plus the long lanky legs. don’t forget those lol

However, because of this disadvantage, cheetahs...usually surrender. They know it’s not worth it to defend their kill from larger, stronger opponents, so they’ll give it up and just catch something else. This aspect doesn’t quite fit our protective, selfless protagonist all too eager to risk everything to save his loved ones--so a pure cheetah may not be the right choice.

So what animal is brave and protective? That’s where the lion part comes in, of course!

Why not just make him a pure lion? Well, a little similar to making Toby a wolfdog instead of a pure wolf. A straight-up lion feels a little too “chad” for our sweet Jimbo. Too much of a jock.

Jim has the humble underdog nature of a cheetah as well as the bravery and fierce protective drive of a lion. Cheelion? Leetah? idk, but let’s design it!

Like Toby and warm colors, I don’t think I can possibly associate Jim with any color but blue. While it’s never directly stated, given that we’ve never really seen him wear any other color (with the exception of the Eclipse armor), I think it’s pretty safe to assume that that’s his favorite. Blue sweater, blue jeans, blue shoes, even his backpack and bedsheets are blue. So naturally, his fursona would be predominantly blue as well! Plus some yellowish accents to (somewhat) match the natural colors of his chosen species(s).

I imagine he originally designed the character without horns, but then added them after becoming the Trollhunter, since it became such a major and impactful aspect of his life.

His lion’s mane also continues down his back in imitation of the “mantle” found on baby cheetahs. This youthful feature could subtly represent the fact that he’s been forced to grow up too fast and take on so much responsibility so young--so his fursona can still be young and carefree as long as he likes even while his real self struggles with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

This fursona is relaxed, calm, and confident. He’s not just cool--he’s crispy!

Lastly but not leastly, we have Claire. Out of the three, I think Claire was actually the easiest to choose--or at least, I had the clearest idea of what I thought she might go for.

Claire is a bit of an interesting duck, because while she’s shown to be fairly popular at school, she’s definitely far from the stereotype of The Popular Girl™. Yes she’s smart and pretty, but she’s also a little spunky or even a bit quirky--she’s a theatre kid, she’s a huge fan of hard rock band Papa Skull, and while I wouldn’t quite call her “rebellious” per se, she’s certainly willing to bend some rules if she feels the situation calls for it (not telling her parents that she was going to the concert with Steve, literally sneaking into Jim’s basement to try to find out what was up with him, etc).

That said, I think Claire might go for a hyena fursona--something a little out of the box, but not totally out of left field. (she also shows a slight Gurl Power™ streak here and there “the staff was not meant to be wielded by man--” “I am not a man!!!”) and if you know anything about hyenas...well, yeah lol)

I think Claire would lean into her punk-rock “rebellious” side with her fursona design. This character is completely free of the pressure of being the councilwoman’s daughter and having to maintain her mother’s public reputation, and thus allows Claire to express a less restrained side of herself. She has a bold semi-edgy color scheme with bright accents (and some earrings to match her person’s hair clips) while still remaining feminine and (her own brand of) fashionable.

This fursona is spunky and sassy; she’s spicy and sweet all rolled up into one. She knows what she wants and she’s not afraid to chase it down. She lives her own life and she’s dang proud of it.

....sooooo yeah there’s my take on what Toby’s, Jim’s, and Claire’s fursonas could hypothetically be. And I guess since this post was inspired by a joke about Toby’s infatuation with the school mascot, here’s just some quick thoughts on how they might approach fursuiting to end us off:

Jim I don’t see as much of a suiter. He might try it once or twice if given the opportunity, but at the end of the day it’s not really his cup of tea--he’d rather act as the “handler” for his friends, if anything.

Toby and Claire, on the other hand, I could definitely see as suiters. In fact, with her interest in acting, Claire would probably particularly enjoy it--she’d be one of those suiters who really gets into character, absolutely refuses to break the magic publicly (outside of any actual medical emergency), and popular at cons because she just performs so well.

Toby, meanwhile, would be the more chill type--uses his normal voice in-suit, isn’t really too stressed about “breaking the magic”, just kinda hanging around like he would normally except “look I’m a talking dog, cool right?”.

also while I was typing this it occurred to be that since Eli is canonically a cosplayer then he could be a fursuiter as well; in his case i imagine he actually made his own suit it’s a protogen and it’s full of little LEDs and other electric gadgets, it’s not the prettiest thing ever as sewing is not his forte but boy did he try!! good for him. good for him

So I was at work thinking about Zutara (as you do) and my mind drifted to a kat@@ng argument I tend to see a lot of. About how Aang would be so sad if Katara never returned his feelings and therefore Zutara 100% //can't// be endgame which... a) homeboy is literally 12 and would get over it, and b) BUT WHAT ABOUT KATARA THO. But it got me thinking. Is there even any evidence in canon that Air Nomads believed in wholesale monogamy or marriage? I mean, Aang never knew his parents (1/2)

(2/2) -and Aang was raised communally by the Air Nomad monks and nuns. So like, why would being with Katara (specifically JUST Katara) //forever// be something he'd hyper focus on so badly? Also, Aang is shown wanting to adhere pretty strictly to Air Nomadic teachings but in this instance he gets a pass? It just boggles me tbh. Anyway, your meta and responses are just plain amazing and would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I’ve actually talked a lot about Aang’s willful disregard for his people’s culture and customs when it clashes with something he wants, but I think most of these discussions have happened in private server spaces and I haven’t actually spoken much about it here, so let’s remedy that!

You are absolutely right--Aang’s lifelong monogamous relationship and Katara being his ‘forever girl’ clash with literally everything we actually know about Air Nomad culture. And it’s actually kind of frustrating, because this would have been an excellent chance for some worldbuilding--speak about how the Air Nomads did not hold with typical family structures, that monogamy simply wasn’t done because they practiced detachment and while that doesn’t mean they couldn’t love one another (Gyatso loved Aang a great deal, for example) it means they most likely would not have practiced relationship exclusivity.

Honestly, it would have been really cool to see a culture where monogamy was not the norm, and we get hints of it--Aang never knew his parents, and he wouldn’t have been discovered as the Avatar until years after his birth (I believe they do the toy test when the kids are toddlers or older), which means he was likely removed to the Air Temple shortly after being born. His parents most likely lived at separate temples--nuns had their own, as the temples were separated by gender--and its not a stretch to believe they didn’t have any sort of monogamous relationship. One theory I’ve seen proposted is that the AN practiced something like a yearly or bi-yearly fertility festival, where adults from the temples came together in celebration--of life, of love, of their people, of the element they breathed that informed every aspect of their lives--and I’m not suggesting wild orgies, but that many would pair off, have their own smaller celebrations, and return to the group, and this is where most pregnancies would happen.

That is, of course, pure speculation, but it would be a lot more in keeping with what we do know of the AIr Nomads than Aang deciding, at the ripe old age of twelve, that he’d found his ‘forever girl’ and he would be with her, and only her, for the rest of his life, no matter what.

It’s also very... odd, though, that Aang would even come up with this idea on his own. It’s not like there are tons of examples, as the gaang travel the world, of aggressively heterosexual couples pairing off and spending Forever together, because, well, they’re in the middle of a war and everyone has more important things to think about. And Aang’s crush, while cute and seeming more like puppy-love than anything else book 1 and most of book 2 (he literally imprinted on the first girl he saw when he hatched from the iceberg ok), becomes almost disturbingly possessive in book 3, and it really comes out of nowhere. When did Aang decide, without ever once asking, that Katara must return his feelings? And why? Because, as established, it makes absolutely no sense given what (admittedly little) we know about his own culture and how he was raised.

I realize that the Doyalist explanation is that Bryke are, themselves, aggressively heterosexual, and had decided from the jump that they wanted Aang to Get the Girl in the end, and so were determined to Make It Happen even when, given the story and how the characters had developed, it no longer made any narrative sense. (And yet they never thought to make Katara’s feelings a focus when trying to force Kataang to happen. Odd, that. Or maybe not so odd, considering their treatment of Katara in LoK. But I’m stopping myself here cause that’s a whole other rant.) But the Watsonian one paints a very unpleasant picture, especially given Aang’s actions towards Katara in book 3--during EIP in particular.

And it’s funny how Aang’s complete and total disregard for his people’s beliefs and culture, when it would deny him something he wants, is never mentioned in those ‘but Aang couldn’t kill Ozai, it goes against his culture’ posts. If Aang had demonstrated any willingness to uphold his people’s beliefs before this--like, say, following through on letting go of his attachment to Katara and understanding that if she didn’t feel the same way he did, he was not entitled to her affections and would be able to move on--then I’d be much more inclined to give those arguments credit.

As it is, however, the only reason I agree that Aang shouldn’t have had to kill Ozai is because he was just a child, and he should have been able to preserve the innocence of childhood as long as possible--but I still dislike the way his battle with Ozai ended, because he had disregarded his people’s beliefs over the entire book, he had done nothing to regain the Avatar State except get slammed against a pointy rock, and energybending was handed to him on a silver platter by a lionturtle who literally came out of nowhere to give it to him.

Not only that, but the discussion about what he would do once he actually faced the Firelord came much too late--the subject wasn’t even broached until The Southern Raiders, and thus Aang’s insistence that he can’t possibly take a life seems to come out of left field because a) he never felt any guilt over the lives he took while in the Avatar State at the end of book 1 (and this isn’t to say he was at fault for what Koizilla did while he was fused with it, but he has felt guilt over his actions in the Avatar State that were just as uncontrolled before this, and you’re telling me that he wouldn’t have seen any of that as blood on his hands? that if he killed Katara, or Sokka, or Toph, in one of those rages, he’d have just shrugged his shoulders and blamed it on the Avatar State? no), and b) there was absolutely no discussion of this before the eclipse, leaving one to wonder what, exactly, Aang was planning to do in that eight minute window where Ozai would be powerless. I don’t think it was a dance-off in the cards, that’s all I’m saying.

I’m sorry, I got incredibly off-topic. but the bottom line (TL;DR:) is: I absolutely agree with you. And it’s suspect, from both a character arc and a worldbuilding perspective, that Aang is only committed to his people’s beliefs and his culture in the one instance where he might have been asked to do something he didn’t want to, but not at all when following his own culture might have meant losing something he wanted. This not only paints him as incredibly selfish (something that is hard to dispute when looking at his behavior in book 3, though I would point out that if his arc actually followed a natural progression from books 1 and 2 he would have grown up rather than... that), but puts his culture in an incredibly simplistic light. We never get any deeper insight into what his people believed or how they lived, because Aang latches onto the first girl he sees and is determined to make her his ‘forever girl’, and there’s never any talk of how he was raised or what his people actually believed.

And even when he meets the Guru--someone much more well-versed in Air Nomad culture than Aang is, because Aang went into the ice at twelve years old and never had an opportunity to understand his culture--he almost immediately disregards what the Guru told him when it conflicts with his own desires. Sure, he says ‘I’m sorry, Katara’ when letting her go at the end of the finale (although....why he’s apologizing to her, when he’s had no indication she has feelings for him, and he certainly never asked, is beyond me), but come book 3 he’s right back to wanting to have her, and assuming he will just because he kisses her--without preamble, without any discussion of feelings, without even asking if she wants to be kissed--and flies off before the invasion.

Any way you slice it, it really doesn’t make sense, unless they wanted Aang to come across as selfish and pigheaded throughout the entirety of book 3. But I suspect that isn’t actually the image they wanted to project, and it makes me really sad when I think of what his arc could have been if it weren’t for Bryke’s insistence that he get the girl at the end of the story.

the love of my life, without a doubt, 100% leah clearwater. mfs tried to make her feel bad for feeling her feelings but she was valid in all of them. also its canon that shes a scorpio but yall aint hear it from me

ok besides the obvious, and nobody drag me for it, but bree tanner. I get she was there to show us how fucked up the volturi are and to sorta predict bella as a newborn but……...we already knew the volturi kill mfs just for fun. if the cullens werent gonna adopt her we really didnt need many details on her. and regarding the newborn thing, bree’s role as a newborn didnt really mean shit bc bella ended up being ~the perfect newborn~ anyway!!!! smeyer tried to sell us the short second life of bree tanner as if there arent other worthy characters of having a spinoff novella about like leah or seth or rosalie or emmett or charlie or resume from bella’s ovary. that being said………..

resume, for multiple reasons including:

resume literally shouldnt exist. vampires shouldnt be able to have working sperm and even then, edward shouldve pulled out. he could barely even tongue kiss bella so wtf made him think he could cum in her????? whyyy didnt he use his big vampire brain to consider that?????

resume seemed totally unwanted and unthought of??? bella and edward were so mf absorbed in each other like regular teen couples (with 1000x the intensity but still) that it didnt seem likely that theyd want a baby after fucking like three times anyway. miss bella “fuck them kids” swan also gave no indication of wanting children. ever. EYE would have simply aborted and went on to live my best vampire life :)

charlie, sorta, even tho he’s a cop. i wasnt there for the original conversation on here but do yall think he supports black lives matter? idk tbh but we’ll never know bc smeyer probably doesnt know what police brutality is. anyways ive really enjoyed the discourse on his relationship with bella and how he doesnt trust edward

jacob <3 he’s always been my heart, my soul, my baby, my fuckin cinnamon apple, etc. but i love the posts that other fans/nonhaters have been making abt how warm and kind he was before smeyer fucked him over and how he deserves so much better. its like yes im glad youre seeing all the things that make me a team jacob thot :)

The Bookshop Owner (Chapter 16)

I'm so sorry for the delay with this fic, but it is almost ending, just another two chapters to go now, so thank you all for your patience and your support. Sending all my love for each one of you that has been reading this fic.

Gold knew that things could change quickly, what was bad could be turned into something good, just like what seemed to be too good to be true could turn disastrous. It seemed to happen frequently in his life, but any previous circumstances could not have prepared him for what had happened that morning. Almost losing Belle again after they just shared such beautiful moments forced him to make a crucial decision. He wasn’t going to let go of her ever again and he would conquer their son’s love, no matter what.

After Belle was calmer and had went back to her room, so she could shower, he finished properly dressing himself, going straight downstairs where he knew that he would find the boys. The first one he saw was Neal, standing next to the door, his cell phone pressed against his ear. He waved briefly when he saw Gold. Adam went to the kitchen, leaning on his cane, finding Gideon tapping his fingers anxiously against the counter while he waited for the coffee pot to finish its work.

"Gideon?"

The boy turned around but remained expressionless, as the machine started to beep madly, and he took the pot from it, reaching for the mugs. "Coffee?" His son asked casually.

Snorting, Gold sauntered over to him, observing how his movements were almost mechanical, as if he was in pilot mode. He knew Gideon didn't want him anywhere near Belle, and the earlier confrontation between them only served to make him dislike his father even more, which may have erased all the progress they had made yesterday.

"I was actually thinking that we could take a walk together and talk," Adam suggested. "We need to."

Gideon shook his head. "I'm not up to it, Gold."

"Please, son," he begged, "if not for me, then for your mother."

At those words, Gideon froze, his hands stalling to fill a mug with the coffee he had prepared. Last night he had agreed to go visit August with Neal to give his mother a chance to make her own decisions, judging if Gold was worth her forgiveness or not, and if she should give him a second chance. Now he was blaming her blind faith and love for the bad situation she was probably placing herself in, no matter what his brother had said.

Sighing, he left the coffee pot on the counter and turned back to stare at his father.

"What's your affiliation with that woman, Cora?"

"Neal already explained it," Gold shrugged.

He had to restrain himself from rolling his eyes at him, because Neal had an explanation for literally everything, so he wasn't buying into every word his older brother spouted. Neal was basically playing the great cupid around the two of them, which was truly annoying.

"So, was it true?"

"Of course, it was," Gold assured him, touching his arm, and Gideon had to restrain the urge to evade his touch. "Gideon, I have no reason to lie, please come take a walk with me and let's talk."

Breathing in, he thought about saying no and going to check on his mother again, but Gideon knew that if he didn't give him a chance now, his pride would probably keep him from doing so forever, so instead, he nodded.

"Around the neighbourhood, not any further than that," the boy retorted.

A huge smile appeared on Gold's face. "Alright."

They talked to Neal before leaving, saying that the were going to take a short walk and should be back soon. Gideon wasn't sure about why Neal wanted them to be a big happy family, and he started to wonder if his half-brother had ever tried to get his own parents back together and failed. Maybe that was the reason he wanted so desperately for his father's relationship with Belle to be successful.

There were people doing morning hikes around the neighbourhood, some mothers pushing strollers with tiny chubby babies inside and kids playing in their yards. They were in a residential borough, very different from the one Gideon had grown up in back in London, their flat wasn't far from the bookshop and was located on a street full of tiny stores.

He thought it might have been great having a childhood like this, in a big house with a family that was so united that it appeared unrealistic. But it was just a stupid fantasy that only had came to his mind because he was thinking about how his brother's life might not have been perfect either. Nobody's life was.

"Listen, son, your mother and I - " Gold attempted to speak as they had reached the end of the block.

"I truly prefer not to hear any details about my mother and you," Gideon said with a disgusted face, but he couldn't help asking: "Are you two dating now?"

"We are engaged, and I don't intend to ruin things again," his father guaranteed. "But I want you to be ok with it and so does your mother."

The very first thing he thought was how incredibly ridiculous it sounded for them to have apparently settled things down after just one night. People dated for a reason, they did it to get know each other, to see if their goals in life were the same or at least if they were willing to cope with the other's desires. But then it came to his mind that his parents had totally skipped the dating part ever since their first meeting, unless that movie counted as a date. They had done everything pretty quickly.

"I don't want her to end up heartbroken again," Gideon whispered.

"She won't, I promise you that she won't."

"You say that, but you were together only for a couple of hours, and you already made her cry."

Gideon didn't mean to be cruel; he was actually just trying to be funny this time, but it didn't come out the way he expected. He wasn't good at these types of things, even his friends knew when he tried to be funny that he could end up sounding moody. Roderick and Grace always ended up laughing about it, but his father wasn't that type of person, and he seemed to have taken it quite seriously.

"It wasn't my fault and it won't happen again," Gold said defensively, as if it were a promise. "Can you tell me something about you? About what you like or dislike? About your friends?"

Taking a moment to think, a half-smile appeared on his lips as he said, "I cosplayed as Kylo Ren at a con last year."

"Oh," Gold mumbled and Gideon guffawed, making a frown appear on his face. "What are you laughing at?"

"Mama said you hate Star Wars," the boy answered, still laughing. "I couldn't resist."

Gold rolled his eyes.

"Can you say something real?"

"I - " Gideon stammered, but he wasn’t actually sure if he should keep going with this, because it was really personal, and he'd only shared the fact with a few people. He knew that his father should be the person to know, but his heart beat rapidly, thinking he should speak again, but he did it anyway. "Alright, if you really want to be a part of my life, I bet this is a good place to start,” he said, taking a deep breath before confessing: "I have a boyfriend."

"A boyfriend?" Gold swallowed, not knowing if he had in fact understood the words that left his son’s mouth. "You're dating another boy?"

"Yeah," the boy muttered, clearly nervous.

That was when Gold realised how much his approval mattered to him. Of course, Gideon was uneasy right from the start and his pride was just like his was, too big to give in to. Belle was right; they were alike, even though they hadn’t known each other long and that only made him regret not being a part of his boy’s first sixteen years of life.

"Does your mother know?" Was the only thing he could manage to say.

Gideon rolled his eyes. "Why does everybody think I'm keeping this secret from her?"

A small laugh left him. He had no problem with Gideon’s choices in love matters as long as it made him happy, because he was never the kind of person that judged others for those things. That didn’t mean he wasn’t surprised, of course, as he had never faced something like this before.

"I don't know, I'm sorry," Gold replied. "Do you... Mm, do you love him?"

"I think it is too soon for me to know that, but I do like him a lot," Gideon said with a shrug.

It was funny that the child he never known wasn’t actually a child anymore and was talking about love interests with him. That wasn’t the vacation he was planning when he decided to fulfil Neal’s wishes and make this trip to London, but he wouldn’t trade it for the world.

"That's good," Adam said with a grin. "The feel of love comes when you are not expecting it, you just look at this person and suddenly your heart feels like it will burst."

By his side, the boy blinked. "So, you're ok with it?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't I be? We are in a modern world and I'm no idiot. As long as you're happy, I'm happy."

Relief washed over Gideon’s face as well as his heart, because telling people that he was gay was never an easy thing, and he would never stop fearing their reaction, but it being about his own father made things even scarier. If his mother was going to date him, and they were going to spend more time together then it was good to know that he was accepted for who he was.

"Well, thank you, father."

"What's his name?" Gold returned.

The thought of not answering passed through Gideon's mind, but a smile was already eclipsing his lips at the remembrance of the dark-haired boy whose company he so adored, and Gideon ended up giving in.

"Roderick."

"Can I meet him?" Gold asked.

"Oh, Jesus, this is too soon, alright?" Gideon answered, exasperated. "Too soon for everything, watch out for your own relationship for now."

"Alright, son."

Mindlessly, the boy placed an arm around his father's shoulders and assisted him, turning around so they could head back to the house. Gold leaned on his cane, smiling at this small gesture, because it was something so common, but for them was still so new, another step forward for both father and son.

"Let's go back then, or your leg might start aching."

When they arrived back at the house, Belle was wandering around the living room, appearing nervous and preoccupied, her fingers pressing together mindlessly, until she finally heard the the front door being opened, nearly jumping out of her skin, in a hurry to meet Adam and Gideon. She stopped at the hallway, blinking in surprise at the scene before her, because her son was in fact holding the door open for his father, with the tiniest of the smiles on his face, as Gold passed through it.

Belle thought her eyes were betraying her, because just that morning Gideon was terribly angry with him, for the way she'd been crying and making accusations over Cora’s text message, and now they were here, appearing to be cheerful around each other. Walking towards them, she hugged Gideon with all the strength she had, surprising him; he returned the hug after a second.

“Hi, mama,” the boy giggled.

"Hey,” she answered, “Neal said you two had gone for a walk."

“Yeah," Gold confirmed and his expression was so joyful that she wanted to throw her arms around his neck and kiss him.

Yet, she chose to lay her head on their son’s chest, caressing his back as she offered her free hand for Adam to take, which he did without hesitation, gently caressing her fingers.

"Astonishing," Belle remarked.

Gideon placed a kiss on the top of her head, releasing himself from her embrace, and nodding with a little smirk. "I'll call Rod, right?"

"Go on."

They observed as he made his way to the staircase, observing their boy's movements until he disappeared from their sight, and Adam's gaze turned back to her.

"He has a boyfriend," Gold remarked.

"He does," Belle nodded, biting down on her lip. "Are you ok with it?"

She hadn't even though about telling him, because after everything that had happened, it seemed to be a trivial thing in the back of her mind. Belle never had to deal with telling people her son was gay, mostly because she wasn't very sociable, and the ones she cared for already knew it from the very start, except for her father whom she thought she would never see again, and Adam, who was standing there with an arched eyebrow, shaking his head to show that this was of no concern to him.

"Aye, I don't think I have the right to give any opinion, but I just want him to be happy."

Belle released a breath of relief, knowing that Gold would always love their son regardless, just another reason she'd wished he had shared their son's entire childhood with them.

"Look, I know Gideon is not being easy on you, but he only needs time. You'll see that deep down, he is the sweetest boy in this world."

"I already believe he is," Gold said, grabbing Belle by the waist, bringing her closer until he could lock lips with her. "What would you say if you and me went out to dinner tonight?"

"I would love to, Adam," carding her fingers through his hair as something occured to her, "but I have one condition."

"What is it?"

Her smile turned into a wicked one, and she approached him, brushing her lips against his stubble, tracing his jawline delicately until she reached his ear to whisper: "You will use the clothes I got for you."

"Belle..." He protested.

"Please!" She squealed.

That was the last thing Adam wanted to do, but Belle looked so beautiful, so pleading, that the words were nearly slipping out of his mouth against his own will. God, he loved that woman with every fibre of his being.

"Sweetheart, I'll look ridiculous."

"No! You won't," Belle shook her head, giving him puppy eyes. "Please do it for me."

Gold sighed. "You better make it worth the effort."

A glimmer appeared in her eyes as Belle ran her hands down his chest, toying with the buttons on his waistcoat, tracing them upward again, gathering her fingers around his tie.

"Oh, babe, I will."

In commemoration of the truly astounding display of public regard for CC thanks to Colin, who is legit an angel (dated 8/19/2017). Not to mention the fact that @mahstatins is a truly amazing mom who is truly v tired and could use some solid flirting. This is established relationship CC. I’m sick of getting them established. They are already together, ok? Modern AU time. TOPICAL modern AU time. Oh, and btw, if u were wondering what their dog (who is named after Sally Ride, because space) looks like.

+ For someone who can’t seem to shut up about constellations and space travel and whatever else not of this Earth, he’s unusually apathetic about the upcoming Event. Which, while scientists have known about it’s coming for quite sometime, it seems to have only just exploded onto the media scene, which means his Facebook is mostly flooded with scams for special glasses and not the latest political nightmare. Although there is that. Never free.

Thing is though, the man has a telescope and a star map and one of those little night lights that projects the constellations of your current geographical location on the ceiling. He’s got a mug, right? David has to remind all of their friends that he did not buy him this mug, he bought it himself, and it says “The rotation of the Earth really makes my day,” like it’s funny—and laughs about it every morning.

So the not caring about the upcoming eclipse? It’s unusual. For him.

“I’ve just been busy lately, love. Honestly,” giving him a peck on the cheek and going about his day, “I appreciate the concern.”

Which, yes, he has been busy. They both have, but they’ve also been dealing with some Liam-related drama (what’s new), and nothing rests heavier on Killian’s shoulders than the latest “Fucked Up Thing Liam’s Said on the Phone,” catastrophe. And usually, Killian shares the latest criticism or blunt (also known as, “rude”) opinion immediately. He’s older now, wiser—less sensitive about Liam’s litany of opinions about his career choices and food choices and how-you-arrange-the-living-room choices and whatever else he can think of. Liam’s a good guy. David is adamant; he’s a good guy that loves his little brother as if he were his own son. But Killian’s not his son, is he?

“I know how hard it was for you guys growing up,” David says for what feels like the millionth time, “but he’s gotta let go a bit, ya know?”

“You don’t need to tell me,” Killian answers for, again, what feels like the millionth time, “I don’t take any of it to heart.”

But he does take it to heart. Of course he does. Killian Jones takes everything to heart and it’s one of the things he loves about him, but it’s also one of those things that makes him soft and vulnerable and sad, only he tries to keep it to himself and that’s when something like a solar eclipse is fucking nigh and he suddenly couldn’t care less.

Which is when he proposes the road trip.

He moans about it at first, mentioning all the work that needs doing and the boat that needs cleaning and how is traveling with the dog supposed to go, and it’s one thing after another until David pulls him a bit roughly into a hug and reminds him (for the millionth time) that it’s all gonna be ok, and it’ll all be here when they get back and they’ve got lots of podcasts to catch up on.

“And I don’t know if you know this,” David whispers conspiratorially, “but the last time a solar eclipse was visible in the U.S., it was 1918.”

“I do know that, actually,” Killian sighs, surrendering to David’s plotting, “Alright, then. I’ll run to the shop.”

It’s a bit last minute, and it’s a good 20 hour drive, and being prepared for such a trip with the dog (”Her name is Sally,” he had rather drunkenly decided the night before they took her home, “our intrepid lass.”) is a bit of a to-do, but whatever, David knows it’ll be worth it. A little stress now, a lot of pop music, coffee, and about a dozen hand-rolled cigarettes later. He figures he can let up on the no smoking rule for this.

“But just this once, you hear me?”

“Bloody hell, Dave, yes.”

They’re packed up and ready to go in about a day, setting out at an ungodly hour a day or so before the eclipse is supposed to take place. They’ll be driving through a few states, but given the time crunch, they can’t make as many stops as they’d like. Maybe on the way back. They do have to make a decent amount of stops for Sally, including one in New York closer to the Finger Lakes. Luckily, or not so luckily, there are about a hundred incredible wineries along the way and they get a little stuck.

“This tastes like actual candy,” Killian mumbles into his glass, he’d loudly protest only he can’t seem to stop drinking it.

“I don’t see it stopping you.”

It’s some kind of raspberry dessert wine, only it tastes nothing like wine and they’re imbibing the stuff like it’s water. This particular winery is a little bit in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by vibrant, lush meadows dotted with wildflowers; sloping, seemingly infinite hills in the distance.

“We could just stay here,” Killian suggests with his eyes closed, a hand resting on Sally’s head. “12 more hours in the car isn’t the most appealing.”

David grabs his hand, swiping his thumb back and forth over Killian’s knuckles. “Maybe,” he says, conceding the point, “but 1918.”

Eventually they sober up and move a little further on down the road.

In Ohio they pull off to the side of a road and eat some raw corn on the cob (Sally too, of course). It’s juicier than expected, even without being cooked. It’s sweet without being saccharine, a refreshing and floral bite aided by the sight of corn fields and red pick-up trucks and frightening billboards about the Devil. They buy a bag for about 3 bucks and continue on, the strains of Fleetwood Mac and Paul Simon following after one another—windows rolled down, the air smelling vaguely of diesel and freshly turned dirt.

They hadn’t really told anyone before they fled, their only notice a picture of their clasped hands on Instagram, resting over the gearshift, “1918,” the caption reads simply, “brb.”

They find a reasonably empty campground right outside of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. There’s a few families with strangely well-behaved children, a small group of women on some kind of vision quest, and a few students from a nearby university. Killian seems to deflate at the prospect of mostly silence.

They arrive the night before, setting up the tent and feeding Sally before collapsing on top of their sleeping bags, legs entwined. Killian usually wakes up first, listens to Sally’s snuffling, Dave’s soft breathing in his ear.

“You happy we’re here?” David asks quietly, observing the thoughtful expression on Killian’s face. Taking note of the crustiness at the corner of his eyes, the soft, still almost-asleep way he stares up at the sky through the mesh of the tent.

"Very much,” answering with a kiss, offering reassurance with a squeeze to the forearm wrapped around his stomach. “Rather this than being tortured with the regret.”

"Didn’t you know?” David snorts, “That’s why I did this. There’d be no living with you otherwise.”

“So a selfish endeavor then.”

“Obviously.”

Around noon, the moon makes its way in front of the sun. By around 1:30 PM it achieves totality, and it’s twilight in the middle of the day—surreal but beautiful. A rooster crows in the distance, the nighttime insects begin to chirp as if they’ve been rudely awakened, and David can’t keep his eyes off Killian’s face.

A lot of the websites he’d visited had said there would just be too much going on to really focus—you’d have to decide what it is you choose to look at, only he hadn’t really anticipated that it’d be the person he’s looked at everyday of his life for the past 5 years. He looks almost inhuman in this near total darkness, his features taking on an edge, a clarity that he’s never been able to appreciate before now.

“Can you believe such a thing is possible?” Killian says softly, in awe, almost as if he were talking to himself.

“No,” he answers, smiling at the sight of Killian’s high, joyful cheeks, “not at all.”
