Now what else could he have been implying other than magic? But the way he says it is almost knowing, as if hes almost saying “cmon merlin surely youre not gonna try cover this up.”

Ok so by now we know Sozin banned same-gender relationships in the Fire Nation, but I think he might also be the reason why "Fire Nation people don't dance"

In this scene during Roku's wedding the Avatar tells Sozin to "dance with someone, lighten up!", so it's reasonable to assume it wasn't unusual to dance in the Fire Nation at this point in history

What if he banned it because that, too, reminded him of Roku?

Okay, so, like, a year ago I had a post where I threw shade at the concept of drawing parallels between Valkyrie and the myth of Pygmalion and I've been thinking about it for forever. Here's a braindump on it, in honour of Itsuki's birthday.

Itsuki Shuu is absolutely the perfect Pygmalion allegory, I will make no argument to the contrary. A skilled artist, disgusted by what he has deemed as the filth of the masses, leads a life of isolation and turns his attention to carving the perfect partner for himself out of a "blank slate". He falls in love with the idea of this partner, knowing nothing about them because the very thing he loves them for, is their lack of humanity. But he grows frustrated, wishing for this perfect partner to become a "real human" capable of loving him back.

Where I take issue, is the likening of Kagehira Mika to Galatea. Because Galatea was never human—she was created and brought to life at Pygmalion's whim, with the divine help of Aphrodite. Kagehira is and always has been human. To liken him to Galatea, I feel, would be denying his development. Though Itsuki willed for him to "come to life", he didn't grant Kagehira the gift of humanity. He's always been alive but he couldn't see it because of an combination of his own past and Itsuki's abuse. And he was never perfect, despite how eager he was and still is to meet Itsuki's demands. He could never imitate the stone-cold perfect reflection of who he saw as Itsuki's own Galatea—he could never be as obedient as Nito Nazuna.

Of course, Nito is not Galatea, either.

I need not repeat that Nito, much like Kagehira after him and very much unlike Pygmalion's statue bride, has always been human despite the state he was in, during ex-Valkyrie's reign. That being said, he differs even more from Galatea in that he freed himself, without even so much as a push from a self-righteous artist. Galatea was turned human through Pygmalion's eventual desperation for true companionship—and she loved him like he loved her. When Nito "became" human, he also became greatly discontent at the prospect of being Itsuki's Galatea, choosing to leave the boy who never wanted him to be human and only loved him for what he himself had carved out of him. How could Pygmalion love Galatea, when he didn't know who she was?

Itsuki Shuu is Pygmalion without a Galatea of his own. And that's for the best.
