I’ve been a fan of Hozier since I heard his song take me to church. Its intense religious scrutiny tied with its beautiful queer allusions roped me in instantly. It didn’t take me long to discover how talented this artist was, and how deep of an impact his music would have on me. He’s been a favorite ever since.

Following a steady increase of my love for Hozier, was a fast and intense love for the Inferno of Dante, a book that I was originally begrudgingly forced to read. I had already watched a youtube series on the comedia and figured that’s all I would really need from this story (sooo fucking embarrassing). But, as we delved deeper into the inferno and all the rich history associated with it, my english-subject-loving-brain was absolutely enamored. There was so much to digest and speculate and criticize and praise. I was in Heaven (haha).

Now obviously some months have passed since the release of this album, but I only recently discovered that Unreal Unearth featured the marriage of these two beloved interests of mine.

With all that being said, here’s are my incredibly belated, partially sincere and partially bullshit thoughts on Hozier’s Unreal Unearth:

De Shelby pt 1- (7/10) gorgeous guitar brought to us by a gorgeous Irish man. Desolate, chilling, sullen.

De Shelby pt 2- (7/10) absolutely insane transition. This bass is so catchy and rhythmic, really fun. I assume this is representative of the harsh descent into hell, running/hiding from the atonement of sins: throwing yourself into what is ungodly to avoid isolation.

First time- (8/10) this just sounds so fucking good, “some part of me must have died the first time that you called me ‘baby’ and some part of me came alive the first time that you called me ‘baby’” is so stark and relatable. God that is an absolutely devastating way to look at bouquets. A quick ode to the lost “remembering again/ the full extent of what forever is” because fuck. This is confusing and heart wrenching, a lover mourning his lost love and worshiping them all the same because they’re all he has in this eternity, this limbo leaves him lost and all he sees and all he knows is death, even through the kind gestures of flowers on his grave, desperate and lost

Francesca- (9/10) The first direct reference to the inferno via the storms of lust in the first circle. Listening has me confusing lust with love- is lust just an extension of love ?? Because this is a damn love song. “Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I” oh my fucking god yeah this is the favorite. Does Hozier know that he’s a lesbian or should I tell him

I, Carrion- (8/10) so, so beautiful. Consumed in consumption itself, prioritizing pleasure over what is right and moral. So many references in this one- the turtles holding up the world, Icarus flying and falling, atlas carrying the weightless feeling he is experiencing.

Eat your young- (8/10) this song is popular for a reason. Obviously representing gluttony, the lyrics are so disgusting and immoral, hungry for more wealth, more gain, more, more. Criticism to world leaders, criticism to capitalism, criticism to consumerism, criticism to those who take and take. “Eat your young” stealing the future of your youth, decimating the climate, sending your children to war, sending your children to sweep chimneys, all exploitation, all eating your young. Also head ???

Damage gets done- (7/10) everyone move this song is so upbeat I need to fucking dance. Brandi has a really powerful voice that complements hozier’s so well. For something being representative of greed, this song is pretty damn grateful, at least on my first impression. In a pessimistic perspective, it could be the oblivion of the youth to their damage on the earth. Just by existing in the world we live in we leave an irreversible mark on our climate, our environment, our wildlife, etc. Unknowingly, we’re greedy to want to thrive in our world in any capacity but specifically financially. Maybe the best of us are our youth that don’t want for more than they have. This song contrasts the previous one HARSHLY.

Who we are- (6/10) this song is a headache. Juxtaposing the deeply frustrating lyrics of navigating the dark, burning out, chasing mindlessly and the loud singing filled with a sense of catharsis and relief is sooo mind boggling. So much uncertainty and passion.

Son of Nyx- (7/10) god I love a transition track. So dejected and beautiful at the same time. These themes of loss are just constant throughout the album. Someone tell me how Hozier did all this world building without any words? I would have genuinely guessed that the river Styx is what’s being represented by this instrumental, he captured it exactly how I imagined.

All things end- (6/10) This is definitely akin to gospel music. Hozier’s influence from black artists is rich in this song, really fun listen. Also deeply ironic to use this style of music to write a song about heresy. Reminds me of his iconic take me to church.

Oh wow, that's so precious! You've definitely earned the "real life Dani" nickname haha I wish I could find something meaningful like that to do with my life. I'm actually autistic and have ADHD so hearing you do this kind of work makes me really happy! Keep up the good work Ms. Clayton! 😁 Haha

You sound like a lot of fun to hang out with at pubs! Haha I'm glad you identify with that bit of info on your star placements. I had a lot of fun doing it too!

The thing about Hozier is that some of his lyrics are incredibly sapphic to me for some reason, I'm still trying to figure it out. NFWMB is one of the songs that feels like that to me. Don't know if you've heard it before but give it a try if you haven't. If you close your eyes it sounds like you're in an epic romantic story and there are swords, pretty gowns, and rooms lit by torches. Haha

The beginning of this song was inspired by a poem written by W.B Yeats called "The Second Coming" in 1920, and it talks about an apocalypse of sorts, alluding to all of the horrors men inflicted upon the world which ends up awakening this beast that goes to Jesus's place of birth in the Bible (Bethlehem) to be born. The last lines being:

"And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"

So the song starts with:

"When I first saw you

The end was soon

To Bethlehem it slouched

And then, it must've caught a good look at you"

And oh boy do I think of Dani when I hear that. Especially bc of that scene where Viola accepts Dani's invitation to live inside her. And nobody knows why she accepts it (but I do!).

And yeah at first glance you might not think much of Dani. in the beginning she's just a tiny frail small-town girl with a lot of anxiety, running away from her past traumas. But she proves us wrong again and again and again. She moves to a country she's never been before entirely by herself, sees an opportunity, and doesn't let go of it even when it looks like it went wrong. Then is very loving and tender with these children who have gone through so much and are still going through so much. Tries to fight (with a fire poker!!) the threatening man that keeps harassing her, the children, and her friends. THEN manages to soften the angry, grumpy lesbian who's given up on people after A LOT of trauma (too much in my opinion) and doesn't give up on her when she rejects her either. Freaking exorcises her ex and makes him stop haunting her so she can be with the love of her life. And then finally as if all of that didn't make her the bravest hero in this story, she literally stops an apocalypse from happening and saves everyone from this beast by sacrificing herself without even thinking twice. Saves everyone that came before her and then the ones who'll come after for the rest of eternity. I mean the P-O-W-E-R this girl has. 💪 so hell yeah the lady in the lake wanted to take her.

When Hozier says:

"Ain't it a gentle sound, the rollin' in the graves?

Ain't it like thunder under earth, the sound it makes?

Ain't it exciting you, the rumble where you lay?

Ain't you my baby? ain't you my baby?"

I can only think of Dani at the bottom of the lake laying on top of all the bones of the people Viola killed and how she's at peace living forever in a dark place like that. That's kinda hardcore y'know?

After the first verses, Hozier goes on to talk abt his lover, someone so utterly terrifying even the beast of the end of the world can't stand to look at them. But this song is also about being proud to be this person's lover bc nothing can fuck with them, not bc you are there to protect them and wouldn't let anyone harm them, but bc they're more than capable of protecting themselves and you too. So in my head, this song is Jamie's declaration of love to Dani.

And then I think of Jamie's devotion to Dani when she said "If you can't feel anything, then I'll feel everything for the both of us." shown in this verse:

"If I was born as a blackthorn tree

I'd wanna be felled by you

Held by you

Fuel the pyre of your enemies"

And the fact that she took what she could get just to be with Dani. She knew she'd have to suffer for/bc of her at some point, but chose to be with her anyway. I have no doubts in my mind she'd want to be anything for her as long as they could be together in any way, shape, or form. In all the lives they happened to meet one another too.

Wouldn't it be cool to see them in an AU where Dani is like a medieval princess who's supposed to marry Edmund to form an alliance between kingdoms or something and Jamie is an assassin who is hired to kill the princess so she has to pretend to be Dani's personal guard or wtever but they fall in love and run away together and Jamie teaches her how to fight so Dani becomes this warrior but turns out Dani is naturally good at it and then she becomes a legend? Hahaha I can see her riding a horse in the winter with paint on her face and her blonde hair falling over this fur-lined cloak, fierce look on her face, and Jamie riding next to her (always). Then they come across Viola who's a witch and puts a curse on Dani and then Dani and Jamie have to travel to all sorts of places and fight all sorts of people and go on this whole adventure to rid Dani of this curse. Maybe Dani has to go back to her kingdom bc her father dies and there are other people trying to take her kingdom so there's a lot of angst and suffering but then they win at the end after a lot of sweat and tears and they live happily ever after! 😎Hahaha

Anyway, I hope you're having a great week so far and hope you had fun with your niece today! (I know if I was her and you had us make fudge and paint I'd worship you haha) I'm sorry for the very (very) long ask, but I've been obsessing over this idea for months and I just had to share it with someone! ✌️✨

I am sure you do so many meaningful things in life without even realising it!! I honestly just want to make a difference and I love helping people so going into a career like this just seemed so natural to me and I really do love what I do!! I have heard some of Hozier's lyrics are quite sapphic and I always mean to look into more of his songs and then just never do but I will definitely look in to NFWMB because the lyrics you have sent me here are incredible and definitely give of Dani x Jamie vibes I definitely agree with you in everything you have said about why Viola accepted Dani's invitation- Dani and Viola are similar in some ways and this was something I was explaining to my niece when she watched it with me. I explained to her that both Viola and Dani are strong willed, and stubborn, and would do anything to fiercely protect the people they care about. We saw that time and time again with Dani, how within days of knowing Miles and Flora she was out with a fire poker trying to protect them from a strange man that she kept seeing around the manor. And how Viola would've done anything to protect her daughter. One major difference between them though is that Viola seemed to have a slight selfish streak where as Dani is entirely selfless, she was selfless for the longest time in even agreeing to marry Eddie so she wouldn't hurt him, she was selfless in protecting Miles and Flora, and even more selfless in saving Flora's life and freeing all the trapped spirits of Bly Manor and then she is selfless in the fact that she won't drag anyone down and won't hurt anyone else at Bly ever again. The one thing she did for herself was being with Jamie- and she was able to make Jamie open up and trust people in way she probably hadn't for the longest time. Dani is a truly strong person as was Viola and I can see why she would accept Dani's invitation. I will have to listen to this song to see it from a Jamie perspective which I will definitely do tomorrow but from the lyrics you have sent me I can definitely see it being a love declaration to Dani from Jamie. Jamie knew in the end she would suffer because she knew she wouldn't be able to keep Dani forever, and knew that one day she would have to leave her- but she knew loving Dani for as long as she was allowed to would be worth that pain in the end and Jamie is a truly strong person as well for knowing this and staying by Dani's side anyway when that must have been such a hard thing for Jamie to ever have to accept. Jamie would've been anything for Dani and would've one anything for her as Dani would've for Jamie and that's why I love them so much. They loved each other so purely and without conditions and so wholeheartedly and it really was such a lovely thing to watch play out in front of us (even if it did hurt us all at the end). I think it would be so cool to see an AU like that I think medieval stuff is always so fun and so interesting and a good enemies to lovers start never fails either because there's so much tension there between them. And Jamie being undercover as someone to get close to Dani and them slowly falling in love with each other would just be a great thing to see!! And I am all for warrior Dani and Jamie (women with weapons is a little bit of a weakness of mine)!! This whole AU just sounds incredible I love a good curse in fantasy stories and the curse slowly taking over and you thinking they're going to run out of time but everything works out in the end!! Dani going back to her kingdom because of her sick Dad dying would be great for angst because it would look

like she would have to marry someone to create an alliance and that she would have to take over a kingdom (perhaps something she never wanted to do in the first place)!! I think this could be a very angsty one shot and could be so interesting and fun and the happy ending would definitely make all the angst worth it in the end!! I am having a good week so far thank you and I had so much fun with my niece today, making fudge went great and she was happy that I was able to show her how to do it because she'd never made it before so now that's something she knows how to do (I think she thinks I'm way cooler than I actually am haha thank you for saying you'd worship me though if you were my niece haha 😂) but tomorrow she is teaching me how to do something because I taught her how to make fudge today... she's gonna teach me how to draw in an anime style- which is something she is really into and even though I'm not she loves drawing so I've asked if she can teach me since I taught her something today!! There's no need to apologise I loved this long angst and I loved this idea I think it's really great and interesting and that song just seems amazing and I am definitely gonna listen to it tomorrow when I get chance!! Have you ever overflown a bathtub? Hmm, I can’t remember ever doing that.

Why did you ignore the last person you ignored? My new manager, Kata, messaged me a bunch of links to EXO’s videos to get me into them – I looooove that she’s friendly and we vibe super well so I have a feeling will be close soon enough, but I’m still a bit shy so I ignored her for a bit while I was thinking of a reply haha. I’ve since gotten back to her, though.

What's your favorite pizza place? Yellow Cab’s pizzas have never failed me. Mama Lou’s is good too, but they don’t deliver to my area so I haven’t had their pizzas and any of their food in over a year now.

What was the last stupid thing someone talked you into believing? That we can stay friends. I believed it for a while and it was so mentally and emotionally deteriorating for me, so I did the right thing and let go instead.

What's at the top of your to do list in life? Save. I’m superrrrr frugal with my money and hate spoiling myself. I’d rather enjoy everything in the future once I feel like it’s right to settle down.

What's a song that would describe your life at the moment? What Type of X by Jessi. Maybe not my life, but the song certainly matches my mood these days.

Do you ever scream at inanimate objects? Occasionally, if they’re not working or if I accidentally hurt myself with them.

What was the last thing that you shared? I just had lunch delivered to Angela’s place as a surprise, if that counts. I got her chicken wings and these chocolate chip cookies she’s always wanted to try. It feels really nice surprising people with gifts; I might start making it a habit :) I have to credit my director Bea for it - she’s been having food delivered to mine and Kata’s places recently and I just want to pay it forward.

What smell/s can you absolutely not stand? Fruits. We constantly have a stock of oranges because my parents and sister like having them after dinner, and the smell is nauseating. Spoiled food is also high up on my list, and the general smell in Manila is also very foul. Go to other places in the Philippines if you’ll ever visit!!!

Do you ever eat leftover pizza cold? Yessssssssssssssss. Idk why but I find it really good? like even if I eat it straight out of the fridge.

Where are you the most ticklish? The sides of my stomach and around my neck.

Would you put your life in danger to rescue someone? Someone absolutely important to me, yes.

When you're wanting a midnight snack, what do you normally get? I usually don’t really like the snacks we have in our pantry so unless I already had food delivered earlier in the evening I just let the hunger fade because I don’t like having food delivered that late anyway.

Which cartoon character would you want to keep as a pet? Buster from Toy Story. Or Maximus from Tangled but in dog form, because I don’t know how to care for a horse.

What color best represents you? Something peaceful like off-white, or a pastel shade.

Do you like marshmallows? I hate them.

What is your favorite flavor of candy cane? I also don’t like candy canes, or candy in general. Too sweet and I can always feel how unhealthy they are whenever I have to have them.

Do you have any shoeboxes full of old photos/letters/other memorable stuff? My mom has several plastic bags filled with photographs over the last few decades. As for me, I don’t own any memory boxes; but recently, I’ve been sticking up notes from my friends and co-workers up on my corkboard.

Are you in any way double jointed? Nope.

Have you ever considered a career in music/acting? Never. I never liked singing in public and I’ve never considered acting.

When was the last time you felt seriously embarrassed? A few days ago when I accidentally turned my camera on during a work Zoom meeting while I looked completely unpresentable. Luckily I knew I clicked the button and immediately un-clicked it, but my video still showed up for like 0.001 seconds lol.

Have you ever liked a song, looked up the lyrics to it, then hated it? I don’t think I’ve gone so far as to hate it. I have felt slightly disturbed upon hearing the lyrics of some songs I’ve taken a liking to though; and Cherry Wine by Hozier certainly ticks off this box.

Which is worse for you: being hot, or being cold? Hot, which is why living where I do doesn’t work with me well for the most part.

What would be the icing on the cake for you this Christmas? Get nicer gifts for my loved ones. I was able to get everyone presents last Christmas, but given that I had just received my first-ever salary then, I wasn’t able to go all out as much as I would’ve liked. I’d love to spoil my loved ones even more for next Christmas.

If you had the opportunity to live forever, would you take it? Probably, as long as I was guaranteed to live comfortably. I’d love to see how else technology can continue to improve.

Have you made someone happy today? I hope so, when I got Angela food earlier.

Do you generally watch a lot of television? I do watch my favorite shows a lot, but not on television. Most of my content I already consume online.

If your bedroom walls could talk, what would they most likely say? They’d probably go over all the shit I had to go through and the ensuing breakdowns they’ve had to watch from me over the years.

What's your favorite Christmas song? It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas, because it makes me feel festive.

Did you ever really believe in Santa Claus? Only for a brief moment when I was introduced to the concept, but kid-me never bought it because he never showed up.

Do you like the band Relient K? I’ve heard of the band name but I’m largely unfamiliar with them.

Have you ever seen a movie that was better than the book it was based on? Maybe, but for the most part I usually find the books to be better.

Do you think tomorrow will be a good day? I feel like I’ll be sullen because it will be Sunday again, but I still plan on making the most out of it.

What's the greatest/most influential song you've ever heard? That’s a lot of pressure on a song... as much as I don’t really like The Beatles, I’d say Hey Jude has been pretty influential.

What's the weirdest thing you've seen in a grocery store? Not sure. If I had thought something I’ve seen was the weirdest thing ever, I would’ve taken a photo.

What is true love to you? Sacrifices.

Do you like chocolate milk? YES, lactose intolerance be damned.

Have you ever bought yourself a present on Christmas? Not yet. I hope to be able to this year!

Have you ever been on a mechanical bull? Nope, but I’d definitely get on one if I find one here.

Do you prefer to pull off band-aids slowly or quickly? Slowly. Actually, I prefer running water over it until it just slides off.

Have you made a mistake in the past week? I am constantly making tiny mistakes at work.

What was the last weird thing you said to someone? Idk, I feel like all the conversations I’ve had recently didn’t involve any inside jokes or general weirdness.

Have you ever met any bands/band members before? I got to work with one - Redd is the drummer for a local band but he’s since resigned to work with another company.

Have you ever sat on a copy machine and made copies of your butt? No. I’ve never even used a copy machine.

Are you a camera whore? Not at all, I hate posing for the camera.

Have you ever purposely dropped someone's toothbrush in a toilet? Never even considered it.

What kind of mood are you in right now? A little sad because it’s the weekend and I can’t even do my weekend coffee shop trips anymore because Covid cases are experiencing another surge (9000 cases a day!!!), protocols are everywhere again, and my parents already told me I can’t go out...those moments were my rare time alone where I can take walks and reflect and whatnot (and not to mention experieince air conditioning for a few hours), so it sucks to have to be stuck at home again. There’s not much to do at home to begin with, so now I’m just stuck in a cycle of taking surveys and finding videos to watch on YouTube.

What was the last thing someone told you that had you at a loss for words? I was ranting to Andi about how I started despising Diane from BoJack Horseman the moment she flipped out over Mr. Peanutbutter gifting her an entire library. I get where she’s coming from, of course, “understand people’s love language” and all that; but I felt like the very hostile reaction was super uncalled for and it reminded me a lot of my relationship with Gabie – I liked giving and giving, but it was either 1) never enough or 2) apparently the wrong way to show her love, and I was always the one punished for it in the end. I told Andi that because of my experience with her, I don’t even feel like giving a library (metaphorically speaking) to any future significant others anymore because of how hard I had it with her.

Anyway, they gave me some advice about it and in the end they told me, “One day, someone will tell you, “Thank you for your library.’” It was very beautifully put and I struggled to find the words to reply.

What's something that always makes you smile, regardless of what’s going on? I’m not sure there is such a no-fail thing.

What was that last thing that you bought online? Food for Angela.

Do you enjoy riding around town looking at Christmas lights? Yeah, but the general mood for last year obviously wasn’t super festive and there weren’t as much lights, so it’s been a while since I’ve seen my village all decked out.

Is there someone that you're mean to for no good reason? No, that’s terrible.

What was the last thing you got out of the freezer? The coffee ice cream that I bought from Leigh yesterday! It’s crazy fucking good and I already feel a repeat order coming through.

Are you currently reading anything? No.

What's a good book you'd recommend? I don’t read anymore. I know child/teen-me would be very disappointed.

2. Favourite lyrics

uhg I really struggled with this one... so I decided to just go with lyrics I really like from a song I have been listening to a lot right now... Which is “The Bones” by Maren Morris and Hozier:

19. A song that gets you through shit

Hozier’s entire Wasteland Baby album got me through some shitty times when it came out so.... all of that. Special tracks on there were “Almost (Sweet Music),” “Movement,” and “Shrike.” These days, however, “Nina Cried Power” would be more appropriate.

Since I already used Peter Cushing Lives in Whitstable, I have to now go with “Rosaline is a Fucking Nightmare”

I’ve been struggling with this one too, but I keep coming back to “Want” by The Cure, so I’m gonna go with that.

Even though I put it in the other answer, I’m gonna go again with this particular live version of “Hocus Pocus” by Focus. Because it’s a journey. And you’ve gotta watch the video itself. It really adds to the experience.

Hey! Can you tell us what it was like meeting Hozier? I’m seeing him in November and I heard he prob wouldn’t be meeting fans after the shows on this leg of the tour due to scheduling, so you’re super lucky!

Yeah so he tweeted that just before my show, and when we waited outside (maybe ~30-40 of us, and this is the largest venue he's ever played that wasn't a festival) the security told us after a while he won't be meeting people, and that he said so on Twitter. And over the 2-3 hours people left, security told us he wouldn't come out, and most of us were just there by the tour bus only waiting to see them go in, wave, thank him as he passed by, etc. At one point his your manager (lovely Irish lady named Sarah) came out and explained to us he couldn't meet us, that he doesn't want us waiting in the cold (to which everyone went "we're Canadian don't worry!" And she was like "oh we're Irish we get it too" haha) and a couple drunk shits said something rude about him not coming to meet us and we all booed them. Basically there ends up being 6 of us, all good calm people, no more drunks or people who would go crazy upon seeing him. The whole band came out at one point, minus hozier, but plus a very tall guy with a hood up and long hair sticking out 🤔 so I thought at that point that was as much as we'd see, and we yelled "thanks for a great show" and things of that sort to them. The security guard who's been hanging out with us is like, "alright, everyone go line up at the gate" and we do, and he goes "okay he's going to come out, meet you guys, get photos signings etc. As long as you guys promise to leave after so security doesn't have to worry about it anymore" to which we were all super responsive and respecting of! Hozier and Sarah come out a minute later, and no one freaked out or anything, once he was right infront of us we all said hi, and didn't do anything until his tour manager gave us the rules. I got to go first and had him sign a scrap of paper I had because of course after a couple hours of waiting I made the mistake of putting all my merch in the car because I was worried about it raining, and I had given my gift for him to security who gave it to Sarah (so he got it! But I didn't get to see his reaction). He was tired for sure, but so kind to us all, chatted with us, we all got pictures (Sarah takes them for you to keep it going quickly). One girl talked to him about an idea of him covering the foster care system in BC on his podcast and he was so genuinely interested and on board with the idea, and told her to email Sarah with the info so they don't forget. When I talked to him he held my hand and made eye contact the whole time, just such a genuine nice person who cares so much for his fans. I'm really lucky to have met him, especially when he's not going to be able to meet many people on this leg, and especially to have gotten to have such a close experience with him because I know normally they try to keep things rolling along so quickly no one gets photos. (And I will keep reminding myself that so I don't regret not getting a voice recording of the interaction, or getting merch signed instead of a scrap of paper haha.) I also got him to write a lyric that I'm thinking of getting tattooed on me and he was so worried about how messy he did it and I was like oh my God no it's perfect!!! (I'll probably just edit it a bit to space out the lettering) and yeah! Wonderful night! If you want to meet him I'd say be super respectful, and calm. Expect nothing, and prepare to be waiting for multiple hours. If you want to give him something and it's looking unlikely to meet him, ask security if they can take it to him. We also all sang work song in the grass together, maybe that helped haha 😊

Absolution and Resolve and A Treatise on Intimacy are kinda boring and it just really shows that I couldn’t think of anything else. Also First Burn doesn’t really fit the fic except in a really meta way known only to me?

@centaine tagged basically anyone/everyone and why not? I know I’ve done this several years ago (or at least something similar), so gonna try to throw in some more recent loves. And not do it in any kind of order to maybe shake things up in the questions… and you know what, I had a bit of a hard time thinking of bands/artists I really like right now, so threw in some composers.

What kind of impact has 1 left on your life?

Not sure. One of the very few I’ve seen in concert, and twice. And I guess that has opened my eyes to what concerts can be like with popular artists and how they don’t have to be like maybe I once thought? And I guess helping me stay in contact with one of my classmates, through shared appreciation for his music (she’s pretty much a hardcore fan. I’m a more casual one)

Just the other day Standing By made me cry sooooo. But in general no, their music doesn’t make me sad. Standing By is a beautiful song that in itself shouldn’t make me too sad, but I just remember the stuff from the documentary, and then everything with Avi. And it also makes me think of my gf now cause it’s a perfect long distance relationship song.

What is your favourite song by 9?

It depends a bit on my mood. Time is great (and omfg that Scott Hoying and Mario José cover of Lost On You combined with Time… what a brilliant idea), but no wait… Duduk of the North has to be it. It’s one of my favourite pieces of music ever. And pretty much everything else from Gladiator really.

When did you first get into 2?

Aha! Easy question for once. It’s all due to Shadowhunters, so it was last fall.

How did you get into 3?

I am such a newbie pentaholic, but I got in deep once I properly tried. See, I don’t really know why I resisted so many years. I love musicals, and I’ve realised part of that is cause I really like duets and choirs and stuff (and stories but that doesn’t have anything to do with PTX). But there was something with the whole a cappella group thing that just didn’t work for me, I thought. And tbh I think a big part was also the beatboxing thing, cause I generally find beatboxing kinda cringy? Also Scott is a bit too much when you’re not used to it with all the riffing and running. I’m not a big fan of that in general. Aaaanyway. I never properly tried even if I knew of them of course. I think the first thing I heard/watched was Radioactive back in the day, which I think introduced me to Lindsey Stirling as well, whom I have listened way more to. So anyway, a few months ago (I said newbie did I?) I was watching GMM, which I have been a fan of for many years, and used to watch every single ep of but haven’t with the new format. But Duo or Don’t-o style stuff is always fun, so definitely gonna watch that. I did recognise the guests, at least Scott, and made the PTX connection (probably not Mitch tbh considering how much he changes all the time). I thought they seemed really fun and cute and everything and knew I had to watch some Superfruit stuff on youtube. Well I fell in love right away, and watched everything, and listening to Future Friends. But somewhere along the way of that massive binge (we’re just talking like a week of inhaling everything) I thought I really should give PTX a good and proper try. First I put a few songs on a Spotify playlist and played at work. Then I expanded a bit. And then I just went into a full soundbath that included all their music, minus classic christmas songs (cause we were past the holiday season). And I do mean listening to their stuff pretty much non-stop for 24-48 hours. Okay did stop for sleep. And it worked. I realised that the beatboxing wasn’t cringy at all cause Kevin isn’t human and you can’t even tell (I listen to the mashup from Bones, with the somewhat subpar beatboxing and… yeah still a lil bit cringy tbh, but not as much as it used to be cause I am used to the art form) and I got used to all the running. Ask me my favourite band now and… tbh I will probably say PTX.

What is your favourite song by 4?

It will have to be something from BSG for sure (I do love the Outlander score too though, and other stuff he’s done, but BSG will always be my favourite). Violence and Variations, Goodbye Sam, or Roslin and Adama probably. The last one there is what I think is the reason I finally watched the show. See, I had tried twice and never even got through the mini series. A friend sent me that song (I think) saying that she knew I don’t watch the show, but that I appreciate a good score and knowing I love Gladiator I might really like the music from BSG. And I was like sure, why not. Give me some nice sweeping score! And she was right, I did really like it. And the timing was just right. I must’ve been ready for a new sci fi show, and the music made me open up to it again. I skipped the first half of the mini cause I remembered it well enough and started with the second half, which I guess got me past that first speed bump, and oh boy and I glad I gave it a third try. One of the best tv series I’ve ever watched. And excellent score. Bear McCreary is for sure one of my favourite composers. How many times have you seen 9 live?

Never. How often does Hans Zimmer do live stuff though? Wait didn’t I see some kind of recorded live thing with him somewhere? Netflix maybe? I should watch that. I have heard some of his stuff performed by a symphonic orchestra in Prague though! Not a pure Hans Zimmer show by any means, but I finally got the Gladiator Suite live. What is a good memory concerning 10?

I don’t have a specific memory tied to Tom Waits I think. Skip to the last question for one story about getting into his music as an adult, which I guess is a good memory. But in general his music just reminds me of my dad. Which is also nice. Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad?

Haha both the sad questions are for very closely related artists… anyways, not really? Cause even the properly sad songs like Deny U and Goodbye From Lonely have some kind of energy that just makes them… less sad. Now, if they would do some kind of like outdoor acoustic thing like artists tend to do for some reason (hey boys, look at kirstin and do the same!) I’m sure they would become way more sad. Tbh I’d really like that. We got a taste of Goodbye From Lonely from someone’s cute party (who was it? Damn, I can’t remember. One of their friends anyway. Wait, was it Luke?) where they did it acoustic, and what I heard was beautiful. What is your favourite song of 1? I can’t say Gold Can Turn To Sand right? Simply cause I adore the original xD Cause it isn’t really my favourite when just looking at his stuff I guess. Hmmm, you know what comes to mind? Vincent (Starry Starry Night), that one is beautiful. Actually a lot of the songs from his debut album are among my favourites. Like Let Me Fall or You’re Still You. Like the big sweeping ballads.

How did you get into 10?

Dad. The end. No but I grew up with the music of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton… assorted blues as well. Many years ago I think one of his songs played in something on tv, maybe even a cover. I feel like it might’ve been I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You? Or someone used lyrics for something on LJ maybe? I don’t know. Anyway, I felt like I recognised the song and liked it. And I looked up which album it was on (his debut album from 1973 in fact) and assuming dad had it, went to find it in the living room (cause I was right). Put it on in the kitchen while doing something, and realised I knew all the songs on the album. I had never listened to it actively. But it must’ve played so many times during my childhood. And I thought “damn, this is good”. And it still is. I think that album will always give me a cozy safe feeling.

What's the first thing you thought in your head when you woke up today? I thought about calling Gab, which I did and which made me fall right back asleep. If your best friend confessed that they can see the future, you would...? I’d put likeeeee 15% trust in them because they’re still my best friend lmao, but I’d mostly be challenging them about their ~skill. I’d be curious to know when it started, what exactly is it they see, whether it’s been accurate the whole time they’ve had it, etc. Tl;dr I’d basically apply my journalism lessons irl lol. What's your opinion on milk chocolate? I like it, but it can get a little too sweet for me and I usually don’t like how too sweet feels for my throat. I’d take it over dark chocolate though. What kind of mood are you in right now, and why? I’m a little more content than I’ve been in the last few days. I’ve recently been hanging out at our rooftop until very late at night because we have a pretty view of the city and the stars, and it’s sooooo peaceful up here; I dunno why I never hung out here before. I’m also more than halfway through the 1,500-word essay I need to do for one of my classes, so I’m feeling good and proud of myself. What's your opinion of high school? It’s all honestly so stupid with all the cliques, the proms, and the pressure to have high grades; but it’s also your chance to be dumb, make friends, make mistakes, and have fun. Some of my most precious memories, important lessons, and best relationships came from high school, so as stupid as it got sometimes, I’m always grateful for the four years. Do you prefer the country or city? CITY. I’m already too used to the internet, the nice restaurants, and the hustle and bustle of the city to be separated from it. Because they’re typically the most recognizable ones in the group. You have your guitars, basses, keyboards, drums... and I think people often recognize vocalists as the one that sets the band apart from others. Just my two cents though, and this is certainly not meant to undermine the band members who do play instruments. Did you ever believe in the Tooth Fairy? I did at one point, but my parents ruined any fictional character for me when I woke up not finding any money under my pillow. What's your favorite type of weather? Just any kind of weather that blocks the sun out is great with me. What's your opinion on reading books? If you have the time and passion for it then honestly good for you. It’s still one of my favorites today. What's your dream pet? Any kind of dog except for chihuahua sounds like a dream. You see a mermaid while relaxing on the beach with friends. What now? Who's been your favorite teacher growing up, and why? I liked Ms. Ettie because she always made sure all of her music lessons came with an important life lesson. She always led the class with a lot of grace and poise and treated all her students with respect no matter how much they were struggling in class, and I admire her tremendously for it. When you were little, did you ever like Pokemon? I did. I had the books, video games, cards, and pogs. How often do you get headaches? Only when I’m really stressed from school and haven’t eaten. Do you have any songs stuck in your head right now? If so, what? Nope.
