Another year, another outfit to die in! Happy birthday again Izuna!!!!!!
Like last year, I played with someone else's lines for these charming patterns, thank you so much Lena @elhnrt ! I had a ton of fun :D

My goal for this piece, in addition to playing with patterns and textures and adding some Naruto references, was to add as many death flags as possible.
The idea of having Izuna in a fireman's coat is obviously not from me. I've always like the idea of Uchihas in fire resistant clothes, and the opportunity for a thick texture alongside a reversible double pattern is very appealing. I used the image of the second reference as a base, with skulls on one side and stylized lightning patterns on the other (visible inside the sleeves and collar). Both were common immagery of firemen coats.
The actual skull pattern is taken from the third reference. I'd seen this one before and before even learning anything abt it it was too beautiful to pass up. Those white and navy gradients are absolutely delightful and I enjoyed using my gel pens for them very much.... This particular type of imagery with skulls and bones in a field is called Nozarashi, inspired by Buddhist representation of death and transience.
The lightning pattern itself is a reference to water and lightning dragons :) Like Tobirama's iconic jutsu, it's one of the hints of what's abt to happen to our little guy. The scabbard is also decorated with dragon motifs for the same reason.
The background pattern is taken from the first reference, another fireman's coat with an illustration of Raijin, the thunder god. He is often representated with drums decorated with tomoes. It works nicely as a standard looking sharingan illustration, with a reference to Tobirama's hiraishingiris with the thunder imagery, like the thunder patterns inside the coat.
If you're interested in this I recommend the book linked in the second reference! It is entirely about skeleton motifs in japanese clothing of the early 20th century.

#im going thru old flipnotes i used to watch years ago and ouggghhg so many good ones#is twenty one pilots still popular.... do people still remember the TRNDSTTER and marble soda meme.........#its like im unlocking some sort of primal part of my brain and everything is coming back to me. one of my biggest inspirations as a kid#i still remember thinking the final transmission lyrics were the coolest thing and watching =TopHat= Bee and Melissa over and over#theres a very specific feeling of longing and nostalgia looking back and watching these again years later#especially when there isnt anything genshin or mcyt and instead its either fnaf undertale eddsworld or another obscure#interest... and not even fnaf sister location its like fnaf 3 and 2. its THAT old. and a lot of oc MVs especially pokemon ocs and furries..#god but they were so creative u know. i still find it amazing ppl took this little lightbox animation on the fucking NINTENDO DS and#cranked it all the way to 11.. like if u look at the transitions and movement its so fucking fluid its insane..!! HOW DO YOU MAKE THE#CHARACTERS SPIN??? AND CHANGING CAMERA ANGLES??? and keep in mind youre doing this all with a shitty stylus#on a THREE BY TWO INCH SCREEN. you only get two layers you can go up to 29FPS and you only have 999 slides to work with#and 24FPS eats up a lot of that. absolutely insane it literally boggles my mind every time i think about it. AND SOME ARE EVEN FULL COLOR#i forgot how popular EDM was back then too...they were really good for timing beats though so you get a lot of MVs with#strobe last and marble soda. porter robinsons goodbye to a world was also popular with undertale and oc MVs. also a lot of vocaloid#someone made a flipnote abt the warner bros fnaf movie being announced EIGHT FUCKING YEARS AGO. it even used the stay calm audio from#the office.... i wonder how theyre doing now... i love you shitty grainy MV audio.. but i have mixed feelings abt the flashing colors#ppl LOVED animating the sans vs frisk fight. aishite and primadonna were also big ones they were SICK AS FUCK#lots of these inspired my old oc designs.. a lot of my characters had side bangs with one eye covered. animal ears and simple eyes too#now i kinda wanna try my hand at the marble soda meme cause i loved it as a kid lol.. i wonder if i should compare my old and new art here#UGHHHH IM SO NORMAL ABOUT NOSTALGIA. if you shame or berate people for pirating things. please consider that being able to buy/watch/read/listen to/play things legitimately is a privilege
not even necessarily a "having the money" privilege but sometimes a "living in the right place" privilege or even a "speaking the language said thing happened to be released in" privilege
#getting into arcade rhythm games and fkmt's manga has convinced me piracy is not only okay but morally correct#i would LOVE to play chunithm or read akagi in the legitimate creator-approved way. unfortunately i live in the US and can't read Japanese#thinking abt that old woman yuri mangaka lamenting that english-speaking readers wouldn't be able to read her manga legitimately#to be clear she was 100% not the asshole she was nice abt it#just tragic all around#not to mention fan translators do awesome work for free but you usually don't get fan translations without what is technically reposting#i collect doujin and like so many american doujin collectors i discovered doujin through pirate sites#and i honestly have mixed feelings about it bc it's all art that was reposted without permission#but i've been able to read fanworks i otherwise just couldn't and i've found artists whose work is incredible#and whose books i would love to buy! but it's cost-prohibitive on both our ends#for an artist to get more than an extremely limited run of books printed and for me to pay for international shipping#a book that sells for under five dollars at a convention can be upwards of 20 dollars to buy and have shipped internationally#in a perfect world artists don't die without money and everyone is more normal about piracy

#it’s complicated#well#not really#it’s a combination of 2 things#academic stress and body image issues#the former is mainly caused bc of a uni admissions test that I’m studying for which is not going well#and some of the problems that I can’t do will be in my school final exams#which are super important#and just generally the last year of school is super stressful#and i am losing all my joy for learning and doing math#and I think I’m stupid bc I keep making super dumb mistakes#and I’m scared I’ll fail uni math since I’m so bad at this math#also I have built my entire identity upon being smart and being good at math and now being bad it makes me feel worthless#the body image issues actually are kinda complicated bc I’ve been struggling with eating properly since 4th grade#and have cycled through many reasons for these issues#atm it’s mostly a mix of hating how I look and not feeling like my health is worth the time/effort/money it takes to make and eat food#and also I kinda crave the attention that not eating gets me from my friends#bc if I see that they worry abt me it means that they care#I know it’s silly#I know all of this is silly#also i feel like a terrible friend for a variety of reasobs#on the bright side I haven’t had suicidal impulses for pretty much exactly one month#so that’s good ig#anyways in summary I hate my body and my mind#i am in a constant state of guilt for eating/not doing work#and feel totally overwhelmed and useless and like a failure#sorry this was so long and entirely in the tags

#fat pigeon tag#wood pigeon#columba palumbus#for weeks he was just fighting that other pigeon constantly and rarely did anything else#so he never visited and i got increasingly worried abt him#feathers were flying everywhere and even here you can see he's missing a lot of feathers and is much skinnier#i wish males weren't so territorial :(#ik it's the circle of life and natural selection and shit but i was worried fat pigeon was gonna be bullied out of his home#and it's not safe out there there are so many cattis that are excellent hunters and my dogs scare them away from here so it's safer#but he's back now and im so glad bc first of all im lov him and second of all i needed this#i've been in kind of a slump lately bc im just really burned out#existence itself is tiring for me and owl city wasn't lying when he said ''im far too tired to fall asleep''#bc my insomnia ironically gets worse when im burned out and need more sleep and i get endlessly frustrated with it#and i've just been so. not knowing what to do with myself?? bc like i have adhd so i can't do nothing that's torture#but everything else just compounded my fatigue and when you mix that with depression you get everything that usually chers you up just#not being fun anymore. and being just another Thing that tires you out even more#it's so hard to get out of those slumps bc it's not just mental it's physical. i've been physically exhausted#and anything i could have done to get myself out of it required energy i didn't have#but then i saw fat pigeon and just. my mood did a complete 180#i have been so happy and energetic today and obviously all my problems aren't magically solved but that's what it feels like#like i feel like im top of the world rn?? there is a reason this blog is titled ''antidepressants with wings'' bc that's what pigeons are#to me at least. i love them sm 🥹#i wish there was a way i could tell fat pigeon that i would literally die for him and he's changed my life#ok so i MAY have bipolar disorder. but idc im gonna ride this high as long as i can
