I was looking at the line work you do and was wondering: do you ink it physically and then scan it, or is it fully digital? It's really good and gives a solid grit to it and adds texture to your works. How do you do that?

99% of what I post here is all digital because I don’t really have access to a scanner very often! my inking style looks the way it does because I draw traditionally in my sketchbooks a LOT and the way I ink digitally is Exactly The Same as I do traditionally (which is why you see a lot of double lines in my inking, stray lines, or scribbling when I fill in solid blacks without the fill tool, I also always turn off any stabilization features a brush might have bc I don’t like the way it feels) and I often go looking for brushes that are gritty or crunchy so that it looks similar to the pens I use on paper!

You can see a bunch of the stray lines and general scribbling I did here, which is exactly what my irl sketchbooks look like, and the circled brushes (I edited these after I downloaded them all to have 0 stabilization) are the ones I used for it!

#I consider myself a traditional tools artist first and digital second so I frequently use traditional drawing techniques but. uh #make it digital??#Wendy Xu has a flex nib brush that I grabbed when it was free that feels exactly like the flex nib pen I use so that’s the other one #I like dead line weights a lot tho so these brushes (above) are really fun to me #I have HUGE respect for people that do really clean and smooth line art and I love looking at it but I simply cannot stand it for #my own stuff. feels Wrong and Not Fun and low key kind of unrecognizable when I look at it after #ask tag #basically my whole digital art experience is trying to recreate my traditional art experience in some way. I’m on a constant #journey attempting to accomplish it #I also add a noise effect to the flat colors (between 5-7%) to mimic a paper ish texture

i think also a huge part of why artists majorly refuse machine-learning (bc that’s what it is, i refuse to call it ai bc it’s inaccurate and gives tech bros too much credit) is that the people currently championing and developing those tools actively want it to replace artists. They loudly and proudly hate the arts and want every creative professional put out of work. They want every creative HOBBYIST to give up. I have seen machine-learning art generators call us artoids (like ‘femoids’ incels or unhealthily online misogynists use to refer to women. To give you the idea of the kind of hate-fueled superiority we’re dealing with) and circle-jerk to the idea of art no longer being a career and no one being able to ask for commissions anymore.

Machine-learning tools are currently a symbol of people who see creativity and art as an enemy, a boogeyman to be slain. They are designed accordingly - stealing human work to create the data, designing it so that people can generate ‘sketches’ or ‘doodles’ to deceive the layman that it was hand-drawn, using real-world likenesses without consent, etc. When tech bros get tired of weaponizing machine-learning because they think we need to get ‘real jobs’ or that furry porn artists charge too much for comms and need to be stopped, it will probably be a lot easier for artists to embrace it as it’ll be a lot easier to develop ethical tools. On top of making development easier, it could become a great tool to make the visual arts accessible for people that have disabilities affecting drawing ability. It could be a wonderful technology.

But as it stands we’re not there yet.

It's kind of hilarious that they think machine learning models will be the the end of art though. As if art hasnt been a core human function from prehistoric age and as if it hasnt survived hundreds of purges, demonizations, and attempts to erase certain styles and movements and people. We're going to prevail no matter what and they can die mad about it

inks, i get it now. a long time ago u were talking about how the sticks are not actually humans and how interesting it would be for a fic to explore the non-human and purely internet aspects of them rather than treating them as Digital Humans, Basically, and now im trying to do the same thing for cybertonians and explore the alien biology aspects of them but every fic ive read seems to want to treat them like cars

That’s rough, buddy.

I’m not familiar with cybertronians outside of a vague awareness that it’s what Transformers are, so I can’t really say any different than those fics because I legit don’t know enough about them to make informed statements, but oof I feel your pain. I imagine that it’s easy to simplify them down to just being glorified self-aware shifting car-robots (and even easier to imagine any human characters trying to do that in-universe), as far as how they work and their literal body mechanics, and it must be frustrating to see their potential go unexplored. If you wanna get into specific points feel free to educate me, if it’s anything like my gripe over the stick-fics then I’d love to be able to better commiserate with you.

#cybertronians #animator vs animation #I’ve seen people get a bit more adventurous with the sticks lately #giving them paws and claws and digitigrade legs and stuff #or stuff like drawing the hollowheads as only having one eye #(which is funny since we’ve seen in the show that Chosen Dark and Orange have two eyes XD)#(but honestly I like it because it adds some variety it’s a neat interpretation)#or Chosen’s visible mouth being entirely separate from the “implied mouth” other stickfigures have #and that’s all well and good but imo a lot of people still aren’t taking advantage of the fact that they’re 1. animations and 2. digital #one thing I really like about AvA6 so far is that the story has really taken advantage of the sticks being digital beings #not just because of the tools being used against them but because of the effect those tools have on them

I’ve seen a couple people saying that my AR horse artworks are bad/inaccurate and I just want to say that I made them as a study, because I am still learning how to draw horses

that’s what figure drawings are for - they’re done quickly with live models to help artists learn the anatomy of their subject. as I do more studies in the future, my skills will improve

omg i have the exact same thing where i just can't do ideas-work or sketchwork digitally, it's so hard! i really don't know what it is. maybe digital art kind of automatically turns on professional-look mode and trad art feels freer...? no clue but litrchrlly same thing i can never figure out why

I think so too!! Its so weird, even if I use the same mindset/restriction for both (no erasing so i force myself to do the same drawing multiple times to figure it out) it looks and feels different....its so crazy like is it not the same hand and brain working on/with both mediums??? 🤨🤨🤨🤨
