LIKE CHLOE my gohd it's design is absolutely the bomb I I I my mind explodes. She looks like she's working with some type of dark..matter..thing she may have invented OR MAYBE she specialises in Shield Power I figured cause the super pretty purple swirly stuff u drew in its glove is the same colour as the badge from PN 1

OR MAYBE I'm overthinking it completely BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS SHIELD POWERS cause. Space? Like she can incase herself in a shield cause you need a protective bubble like— it makes sense in my head trust. AND ITS ROBOTIC ARM IN THE LAST PIC?! HELLO??? Is that psitanium in the middle of its palm to make her more of a menace?! I MUST KNOW WHAT HER MOTIVES ARE PLEASE!!!! Chloe seems like the most threatening out of the lineup I'm guessing hrm hrm hrm...

Maloof, Mikhail, and Elka all seem like the big honcho boss men (and lady), Elka Doom being an oracle-like psychic and all that! AND MALOOF AND MIKHAIL! AAH! LOOK AT THEM THEY HAVE SO MUCH SWAGGER NFNDNXE RAAAA!!!! I feeeeeel like they would have a sort of odd "partnership" with the Psychonauts, a sort of aliance, yknow? Like how sometimes batman will team up with catwoman, smth similar? I dunno, I'd love to hear what you have in mind with all these funky little guys 👂👂pls and thank you 🙏 🤲

CLAPS MY HANDS TOGETHER THOUGH. These are all really good let me get my thoughts in order

Chloe and Benny are a duo! I mentioned it before in my other posts abt her, but Chloe is definitely just sort of doing its own thing, and that just happens to cross paths with the Psychonauts a lot. She’ll work with them when she can, and work against them when they try to shove her into a box with all their “rules” and stuff. Benny is her “guy in the chair” and usually stays back at the lab unless she really needs the extra hands on deck.

i really like the idea of its main power being shield!! I didnt really think about the color coordination but youre so right to be honest, and i think it would work really well for her. Aside from her shield ability, she’s not a very naturally powerful psychic. It uses psitanium to grant itself power-ups during battle, and the big robot arm is basically a super-powered gauntlet that it can harness strong psychic energy into, using it for very powerful psi-blasts and the like..

Maloof and Mikhail are similarly not very for-or-against the Psychonauts, but definitely a lot more antagonistic. But theyre pretty much the lowest threat on the list. Maloof is sort of a goofy b-plot type villain, doing “evil” for the sake of “evil”, and Mikhail is just there to make sure Maloof doesn’t blow himself up.

They’re also the “guys” that Lili knows! Like, whenever Raz and his team need some inside info or resources and Lili mentions that she “knows a guy,” Maloof and Mikhail are said guy. Collectively. Raz greatly disapproves of the fact that Lili hasn’t turned these guys into the psychonauts yet, but she thinks that theyre harmless yet useful enough to let them roam free without it backfiring that much.

Elka is. A special case. Probably one of the ones that could be considered the most objectively threatening, but her antagonistic role is much more of an extension of a greater threat to the psychonauts. She’s the “daughter” of a psychic villain, Dorian Doom, who is attempting to use the ability of precognition to make himself some sort of future lord by giving him the ability to manifest potential futures into reality as he seems fit. She’s sort of a henchman/figurehead role, interacting a lot with the Psychonauts as if she were the main brains behind the operation to shield suspicion from him.

She’s definitely given the psychonauts a lot of trouble, but I think as of recently she’s under observation after being taken down during a big fight against the psychonauts. Mayhaps she’s building a trustworthy repertoire by using her foresight to give Raz and his team little helpful hints when they go rush into missions.

She is Definitely building a very trustworthy relationship with Dogen and definitely not trying to get him to let her out of whatever observation chamber/system they have her in. It’s totally cool and normal.

hey pax :’) you have received a treat!

it took me a bit to figure out what to show, but i mentioned tcol earlier so let’s go down that route :) i’ve been trying to plan out the actual Novel Writing for tcol for ages but i haven’t gotten very far, despite the fact that i know the plot beats like the back of my own hand since they changed very little since i first made these characters at 12… the world’s just gotten more depth and i’ve become a better writer lol. but the plot ITSELF hasn’t changed too much so idk why it’s so difficult. anyway: i have the outline for the first two chapters written out so i will treat you with them under the cut: (sorry in advance they’re long)

CHAPTER 1

PIPER FAIRWIND, SIR KEEVAN GUERRA, and SAITH PRALINE discuss how piper’s finally passed her guild aptitude test and now she’s waiting to be chosen to join a guild during the guild bid.

keevan reminds her that she could always forgo guilds and fast-track to knight training so she could spend more time with the two of them, however saith reminds him that bc pipes doesn’t have a prominent background she’ll need to establish herself in guilds before she’ll be considered/able to apply for knight training.

keevan however, insists he can put in a good word for her (the two of them flirt a little as they do of “oh you don’t have to do anything for me i’m not a damsel” and he’s like :DDDD ily tho).

as they’re walking through EASTHOLLOW they run into LORD KIBA LATHSBURY, son of the grand duke of lathsbury and its immediately noted that he and piper look a LOT alike. the two are formally introduced and they take an immediate shine to each other.

when asked what he’s doing in easthollow he excitedly tells the three of them that he’s waiting for his last friend to pass her aptitude test so they can all enter the guilds together.

from the shadows/crowd a voice begins to chide that’s childish. LADY ILLIANA AEGOS joins their small group and piper immediately dislikes her and vice versa. when pipes asks why she’s even in easthollow if she has such a hatred for guilds, she informs them that she has news from DUCHESS PRIMROSE AEGOS (her mother, kiba’s stepmother) that keevan is required back in lathsbury and that his current teaching arrangements will be ending. she bats her eyes at him and he’s polite towards her making pipes even more annoyed. a different guard approaches illiana and kiba with some royal bs and the two of them go off leaving pipes with saith and keevan.

keevan says he’ll need to discuss this sudden news with the heads of easthollow but promises that he will try to stay long enough to see piper get selected through the guild bid, having full confidence that she will be chosen within a few days.

this leaves saith and piper and she’s royally irritated at this turn of events (saith, teasing her about why that is and she tells him to playfully can it) and saith suggests that they spar so she can blow off some steam. the two head to the training arena, passing those in varying styles of dress and saith points out some of the different classes to piper and gives a very loose overview of what kinds of people she could potentially be working with are. pipes asks if saith has worked with these types of people before and he admits he hasn’t worked with anyone other than other knights closely, especially due to his background. however, he encourages her and tells her how envious he is that she has a chance for the guilds; the labyrinth is difficult but rewarding, and hones your skills in ways that are hard to fathom and imagine to those who have never experienced it before. saith makes pipes promise him stories for when she finally enters guilds.

in the arena its shown that pipes is a skilled but reckless axe weilder, an unusual weapon choice for her especially since she grew up in KINGSBURROW, an area known for its mines and less for its forests.

sensing pipes getting the upperhand, saith uses magic (VIS) to parry her, and piper protests.

saith only laughs and says he’s only good with defensive magic, and she’ll have to get used to battling “overpowered” foes if she’s really going to swing this labyrinth thing. maybe in time, her own magical aptitude will improve and she’ll move from nmba to a mba (*explain what those are*). she scoffs and says she doesn’t need any fancy maneuvers to lay him flat, and they keep sparring.

CHAPTER 2

the final section of the medic examination is beginning and CLEAR BRIGHTENDALE is more nervous than most. he had passed with flying colors through the written examination, and did decently well among the SUBORTUS trials (his most preferred method of healing), but the SANA trials have him shaking in his boots.

each medic is to be tested one at a time in front of the collegiate medical council of easthollow to put their sana to the test and heal an injured creature with their sana application. how well they are able to heal the creature will determine their medic ranking, and that, combined with their scores from the other two trials, will determine their eligibility for the guild bid.

clear has been quiet for most of the trails, unable to really find it in himself to speak with the other medics as they talk and laugh and study with one another; he keeps reminding himself that he’s just here to pass—this is what he wanted to do and he would do it, just like he’d done everything else. a commotion startles him out of his thoughts as many of the medics he’s been around begin to leave the camp, and when he asks, he’s been informed that KARENZA HAWKINS is up for her sana trial and he should hurry if he wants a good seat. the other medic scurries off before he can ask them why this karenza person is so revered, but he resigns himself to take a look anyway.

at the observation hall, thousands of not only medics, but other people from other parts of easthollow were in the observation wing. clear manages to snag a spot near what appears to be a young couple, not necessarily paying attention to what’s going on in the observation.

clear, awkwardly asks if they know why this is such a huge spectacle. he learns that the two he’s speaking with are MOIRA DEARBORN and JAGODA ARTHEA, and surprisingly, are close friends of the medic about to be trialed. moira does most of the talking, and after getting clear’s name, she remarks that she’s surprised he’s never heard of her since she’s one of the strongest medics on record right now. clear raises an eyebrow and sneaks closer (in a way very unmedic like) to really get a good look at what’s going on.

when the trial finally begins, karenza introduces herself to the collegiate and is presented with the corpse of a dead animal. clear gasps softly, and murmurs around him speak about how this is quite a lot for a first trail and “no worries! this is hawkins! she created this technique! we’re so lucky to see it up close!” a great gust of wind blows through the arena and the observation deck and through a barrage of smoke and movement, clear notices green wings emerge from karenza’s back. once everything settles, the creature is back to life. the crowd goes wild and clear is in awe of an obvious master of the field. and while, he knows he’ll never be able to get to that point of literally reviving the dead, he does want to become a stronger medic.

after people begin to file out of the observation room, giving karenza their congratulations, praise and awe. clear hangs back to see if he can speak with her for a moment, seamlessly blending into the shadows (which is also suspicious for a medic). he notices that when people finally file out that the couple from earlier- moira and jagoda -approach her, followed by another person wearing an eyepatch. they all seem close, though clear cannot make out what they’re saying. the three of them whisk karenza away with laughter and high spirits. after returning to his tent, clear resolves to try and send a letter to karenza instead to see if he can ask her a few questions about her prolific success or to just tell her how awed he was. it feels too awkward so after he writes the letter, he crumples it up and tosses it away. a guard summons him for his test and clear goes, palms sweating

Do you have any predictions/hopes for the genshin endgame? since it's coming up scarily soon (Natlan then we're in the home run!!) is there any particular scenarios/plot points you want to happen? Whether it be with the hexenzirkel, Sumeru (because dear god they have a ton going on over there.) , the abyss etc,,, 💜

this is suchhh a fun question oughhhh...... i don't have any predictions but i am so excited to see how it'll fit in (assuming that the story will be tight knit and thought out)

various things i want to see (that arent entirely self indulgent coughs au verse coughs)

obv hexenzirkel. got i plot bunnied an au that runs w my alternate windblume and now im so so sad it doesnt exist.. (basically instead of using windblume to drop lore on them, the hexenzirkel get their own event primarily following mona, albedo, and klee as theyre searching for something. might take on the story riddle aspect from the actual event for this bc. i think it suits them more than collei or sucrose.)

tsaritsa. she's been leaked to be a bronya expy which makes me so so so sick dear god... im so excited to see what theyre gonna do with her and cocolia (who im assuming has to be the previous cryo archon..) so far the entire game has revolved around cycles and change and grief (mond w freedom, liyue w archon deaths, inazuma w the decree and war, sumeru w irminsul, fontaine w the position of the archon in general, khaenri'ah and the prevailing trauma of a long lost nation, celestia and the cycle of handing visions and gnoses, etc etc. even within the harbringers which i feel the need to point out is quite literally a sign of somethings arrival!! each harbringer has something they want to change in some way or another. AND ISNT THAT SOOO.. OH AND OF COURSE. THE TRAVELER AND THEIR TWIN. DEAR LORD.) which is why its so deeply emotive for them to end on the fucking nation of love and khaenri'ah

ok slightly self indulgent but i need more temple of silence lore so so bad dear god. cyno save me cyno cyno save me save me cyno.

also self indulgent but i really hope they continue w the theme of rebirth in sumeru and im so so excited for what that means knowing dottore and khaenri'ah are linked to sumeru. (the self indulgent part is wanting to put collei here she deserves so so much ok i dont trust the game w her though we need like. a colleination intervention team to proofread their things.)

ALSO REALLY EXCITED TO SEE XIAOS STORY CONTINUE.. i know a lot of it has been resolved (his story literally being about grief) BUT i do wonder if theyre keeping more locked for him seeing how hes like. theyre favorite liyue character.

How do you plan out your stories/form an outline for what you’re gonna write? Any advice for it?

Hi Hello! Thank you for the ask! I love talking about my weird process for writing long fics. Hopefully you find even a bit of this helpful. Everyone is different and my process isn't going to be the same as what might work best for you.

I went through part of this a while ago for a different ask, so I'll reblog that after I answer in case I miss something (my head isn't really on today) Forgive me if there's overlap.

OKAY!

The first thing I do once I've got a good idea in my head and its fleshed out enough that I think "This is good! I will actually write this!", I start a new notebook (if the fic will be long) or grab a couple pages from a partially filled one (if its going to be shorter). I am a visual person when it comes to writing, so I like to see my story built out in front of me. It helps me organize, plan, and keep track of character arcs/specific events/details I want to include.

Issho's original story map got nearly destroyed with the amount of edits and notes I added over the course of writing it, but here it is in it's delightful, disgusting glory:

As you can see, I am a messy person. This works for me. I am sure some people will see this and want to scrub their eyes out of their heads.

But the important thing is that I have noted down where events happen across the timeline, where the chapters are marked, the three main arcs (if you can see them, good lord) and have a note at the top about what the main theme of the fic is, and Points to Make. Below are some notes on Toichiro and Serizawa that should have been on another page but ended up there somehow.

I tried to be more ... legible... with Nightjar's story map, and even color-coded it by location. It keeps track of each group of characters, when they interact, when the big events happen in conjunction to those meetings, and bc i am like this, the weather.

Nightjar has a lot more moving parts, so I just put a couple words in each spot and wrote the notes for those events in full on another paper. Nightjar has a very organized notebook with labeled tags and everything, with sections on Character Arcs and Emotional Progress, The Government's Response, Counter Attacks by Claw, OCs, and a whole back section of maps that correlate to where in Seasoning they are.

When I have a basic idea of what I want to happen and when, I go ahead and get a word doc going with the whole outline in one place. I just shorthand write down everything I want to happen as messily as I want. It doesn't matter what it says so long as i know what it means. If i get an idea at any point that i want to include, I throw it in the appropriate place asap. It could be a cool scene, a specific line I want, or a point of progress I need a character to make. Anything. The Outline Doc gets LONG. like 30 pages.

When I sit to write an actual chapter, I go to the outline doc and copy/paste the selection of events I want in that chapter into a new doc and work from there. I keep both docs open so i can throw ideas in anywhere or move events around if I need to change where the chapter ends.

I try to be open minded and flexible with my story construction. And I sure do call it Construction. I tend to change events and move chunks of story and plot around like puzzle pieces until it feels Just Right and makes the most sense.

Sometimes I do this more on paper than on the word doc bc my brain likes seeing things a lot less... up and down? Than a computer can provide. Like this section of notes I have on Issho Teru's emotional state after his parents leave:

I wanted to have a map of Teru's 5 Stages of Grief along with events that move him along toward accepting Reigen into his life and which chapters those events happen in. This got abandoned before I ended up writing any of it, so the top part about him acting out against Reigen never came into play. Originally he never went to the Children's Center, but I couldn't pull that off, so i had to send him away for his Angry period. It worked better.

Obviously not every story needs this level of attention and mapping! My Issho side stories get a few notes in the notebook and then go straight to a word doc. Anything that's only a couple chapters tends to go right to the computer bc I don't need to move events around or map out arcs.

My brain has run out of juice at the moment, but I got more out here than I expected. If you have any follow up questions, feel free to ask!

oh boy do i have thoughts

i only watched the full thing once with a friend so i dont remember all of it, but of what i do remember, 1. rarity was done even dirtier than BOD; 2. they were so mean to rarity's daughter for literally no reason???? she literally didnt do anything and they always called her a spoiled brat or smth??? i feel so bad for her; 3. yes most of my problems have to do with rarity - i hate that shes encouraged to stay with fancypants bc it was changelings making him look like he was cheating on rarity. like yeah girl you should talk to him abt it like an adult but YOU CAN STILL LEAVE HIM FOR BEING A SHITTY DAD TO JEWEL 😭; 4. hey dick cordddd ur still manipulative af; 5. YOURE TELLING ME THERES ONE QUEER RELATIONSHIP IN THE ENTIRE SERIES AND THEY DIDNT EVEN GET TOGETHER??? FOR A SUPER SMALL REASON COMPARED TO WHY OTHERS SHOULDNT BE TOGETHER???????? come on now; 6. get all the baby filler away from me rn why the FUCK did literally ALL of them have to bang except for ONE; 7. fuck outta here applespike

i think thats mostly all of my qualms with it, but other than that i think it was a good watch. it doesnt stay with me as long as BOD did (prob bc i wasnt able to watch all of it as a child) but i think romance-wise, this love story was LEAGUES better than the last one. also i like how it kind of repeats the same moral of the last one, but in a different circumstance that poses new pros and cons.

with BOD, discord was only one person. he was an all-powerful, godly person, but he was still one mind. the changelings in DOD, on the other hand, are an entire nation. this isnt the same "misunderstood outsider" trope that we see with zecora or discord, this is an entire species; one that even themselves believe is physically incapable of loving.

mothball(which is literally the cutest name for a bug-themed character ever) is first in line to lead his species, so you can imagine the expectations and resentment that come with that; he has barely any real support on either side, queen chrysalis being the only adult he can really emotionally rely on. this is what makes his inner conflict so interesting, his empathy constantly at odds with his mother's ideology and his own biological needs.

screwball is also interesting, considering her dad is the lord of chaos and ex-tyrant, and her mom is an element of harmony, kindness incarnate. it's a classic nature/nuture debate kind of plot, but with a twist in that both sides are her nature AND nurture, the only turmulous factor in her life being her environment only percieving the chaotic side; some of it isn’t unfounded either, as she obviously tends to gravitate towards discord more (which is normal, considering most kids tend to have a favorite parent anyway). even if i really dont like the enabling nature of dick cord and how fluttershy is a punching bag again, i find screwball’s concept endearing.

also she and mothball are like, actually adorable. i find it ironic that the canon characters were altered to make an insufferable couple and the basically OCs were the outstanding romance. unlike fluttercord’s REALLY disturbing power dynamic and coercion, screw and moth managed to balance each other out, and (lemme yell it for the ponies in the back) WERE BOTH WILLING TO BE TOGETHER 💥💥💥💥

theres also smth strangely nostalgic about their dynamic. screwball has been the outcast her entire life, her lineage and connection to discord subjecting her to a lot of emotional turmoil. the only reason she has a group of friends is because of her mom’s rank and social circle as well, i dont think she’s had very much room for change or fantasy when her parents were trying to heal the damage the circumstance of their meeting caused for equestria. falling in love with the prince of an enemy nation is cliche and basically copied off of the lion king 2, but i love it in that sense because its probably one of her first instances of living through what seems to be a fairytale. it’s a kind of yearn for teenage rebellion and unpredictability that she’s had to keep trapped within a swamp in the everfree for most of her life, but even though it brings her so much happiness to be with mothball, it also leads her into great danger that her upbringing didn’t prepare her for. she’s scolded for standing up to her bullies and scrutinized for the nature of her character, so what can she do when faced with her very own romeo & juliet tale while entire nations seethe above them?

oh also i love how they incorporated the changelings’ presences in the story before the mane six are aware of their threat, even calling back to mentioned conflicts in BOD. they really use their shapeshifting powers to the most in this installment, and i think the instance that hit me in the gut most is the romantic isolation of twilight. especially with the context that this series was created specifically for shipping; what an insidious thing to keep her from finding love along with her friends to keep her alone as everyone else creates families. i, as an aromantic person, also feel a form of anxiety knowing most of the important people in my life may drift away in the event of marriage and forming roots while i probably wont. so yeah imagine that but with a newly-immortal princess who actually WANTS a romantic relationship, with people who are revealed to be actively keeping one from her - thats gut wrenching for me to think about.

when it comes to the music, i appreciate the effort they put into making original songs, but i also am just. unable to appreciate them bc the changelings voice filter just diesnt translate well to music at aaaaaaallllll. which is a shame bc it stood out so much that i cant remember anything ABOUT the original music. im prob gonna try to see if theres any normal renditions of the ost after i post this but yeah

What do you think Rhaenyra (book) should/could have done to foresee/thwart the usurpation of the Greens before it happened? (Many say she didn't do anything and that makes her a bad politician, but was it so crazy that she expected the lords to keep their oaths to the crown like some blame her for? I Don't think so. Yes, she could have done a bit more, we always could do something. but I do not think that it's entirely fair to disparage her for being plotted against, attacked, etc. more than male rulers who have faced similar and didn't "plan". I'm talking about Maegor (his too-ruthlessness), Aegon the Uncrowned & Aenys (there were many signs Maegor wanted the throne), Aegon II (his poisoning), etc.

Yes, I still have some ideas, but most are quickly undermined by other circumstances:

have the spies (if they were there -- if not, put them there, and how do we know she/Daemon didn't?) and others she and/or Daemon already send in thwart Alicent's arrangements for the aftermath of Viserys' death (which she implements before the green council convenes after his death) and/or have those people give evidence and expose Alicent what she did and publicly reveal how sus Alicent was behaving before Viserys dies [this requires a stay at KL with her kids bc she can't leave Dragonstone without her direction for long and expect its people to be as loyal to her the same as if she were there]

separate Otto from Alicent much sooner [eh, so so, Alicent still has power without him and Rhaenyra was REALLY young, abt 10, when Otto was first dismissed...so...]

use some emotional manipulation on Viserys to keep Otto away and turn him against Alicent in other sublter ways, etc. [again, youth, and not even Elizabeth I could have been perfect at that with her own father, Henry VIII...it's a lot to ask of a daughter for her father]

As for "should", how do we know she didn't and it didn't work out for long? Remember, this book is written by a man who is not only a maester, wasn't there amongst these key players, is writing years after the actual event, he's also trying to re-establish how female rulers are not a good thing for Westeros, i.e., women with similar privileges and authority and agency as men will only be to the detriment of Westeros/the current "correct" social feudal order. He could have missed information he thought wasn't important or ignored others that don't fit into this narrative. The Citadel has thousands of tomes, papers, etc.!

I also dislike this argument that she was a bad politician and we should leave it at that because it doesn't take into account that:

she was listening and present at councils with Viserys since she was 8 at least; first as his exclusive cupbearer, so even though she wasn't always at council during this time, she would have been there and we don't know how long or short Viserys allowed her to stay (in bk, she only served him, not the rest of the members...so HotD is also on my list for that)-- then as just someone on the council

she shows herself to be a good leader through her ruling of Dragonstone for almost 20 years, having such a capable maester in Gerardys, etc. So she's experienced in ruling in ways Aegon never ever was!

Alicent had a lot of support (Larys Strong, her own father and his position, the Hightowers and the whole of Oldtown, patriarchy) for a very long time. Since Rhaenyra was a small child

not everyone is good at the "turning people against the other" or high grades of very subtle social/emotional manipulation. Visenya seemed to often bother, but she is never described as "stupid" or incapable. Her threat to the Arryn Queen doesn't count bc it wasn't subtle or a court manipulation, nor a subtle deception. Just because you're not good at it or willfully don't do it often enough, doesn't mean you should be removed from the position, deserved to be killed for it, be told you are a whore or at least undeserving, be accused of trying to upend the entire social order of "males first" -- because you didn't perform this one particular thing, your entire "portfolio" is trash?

Aegon is not scrutinized for "qualifications" and if we're really going to be a society where everything is decided by birthright and vows and "honor"/obedience to authority, why are the goalposts moved when Rhaenyra shows up? because she is a woman -- this isn't a capitalist society where you apply for jobs, this is a feudalist one AND even if you could "apply", Aegon has less/no "credentials" of actual rule while Rhaenyra has plenty

And we don't know where Alicent may have had more of Viserys war at moments, where Rhaenyra did, and what reasoning or lack thereof he himself used to blind himself to Alicent's bullshit.

And those who disliked or found fault in her ruling or politicking at Dragonstone did so because have was a woman, and/or they lost something/someone at one point in her deliberations, were envious, were looking for more economic or political benefits, felt passed over for what they thought they deserved, of course some felt boys over girls should succeed in lines of succession, etc. ["Rhaenyra Overthrown"]:

Moreover, Rhaenyra is proclaimed heir. IF we are actually supposed to follow and not question the customs of the territory here (as some try to argue), Alicent is more at fault for disobeying the king's enduring choice and choice of heir. The one who did more and have to do more to even get one over Rhaenyra.

Rather, Alicent, on her side and by herself, acted dumbly by antagonizing Rhaenyra at all when she did not really know Rhaenyra's capabilities--whether Rhaenyra is faking any sort of "naivete", etc. Rhaenyra could have been a lot crueler. She puts her kids and herself at risk by making their relations with Rhaenyra colder and more antagonistic than they would have been already by teaching her sons to go against Rhaenyra -- Rhaenyra could have have had her sons exiled, ruined Helaena's reputations, etc.

okay nobody cares about my opinions specifically but im going to go into them anyways. warning, im going to critique Sonic Prime bc its a piece of media by a huge company. this is going to be a biiiiig post too, under the cut.

TL;DR: Sonic Prime was a disappointing experience, but not the worst. It was enjoyable enough, mostly the first two seasons, rather than the last one. I have many thoughts and feelings on the characterization of the gang, some good, some bad, but overall it was a middling experience, just like most Sonic media is. and the kicker, it was not a sonadow show, I'm sorry sonadow shippers but you're just starved for Sonic and Shadow interacting, it's okay to ship them but some of the things y'all are saying is just silly.

okay now for the real post

For the sake of understanding, I will call each 'season' a season, even tho we all know that Netflix fucked with those episodes and when they were released even though some of them should have been bundled together.

So season one? I looooved it. Setting up the premise, the comedy, the flashy graphics and camera work, it was very fun! Overall, the characters and plot lines of each shatterspace were great....but.

Big and Rouge were shafted extremely hard. Both were given very little variety in their alternate versions archetypes. Big just felt like they went 'he's big and dumb and scared.' And with Rouge it felt like all of them had to be mature and in control and pretty. Boscage Rouge was a little teensy bit feral but overall still more similar to the others rather than different. Big just felt very...inconsequential? Which sucks! I adore Big! But in Prime he just wasn't given enough justice, and what was up with No Place Big just?? Turning British??? What was up with that. Never addressed again, purely existed for comedic value to try and keep your attention during over an hour of fighting the same robots.

Season two was pretty fun, applying more stakes by the urge to collect the prism shards, hinting that with them all back together, the rest of the shatterverses may cease to exist. The beginning conflict of interests and miscommunication between Sonic and Tails (which I'm going to talk about more later)

My main gripe with S2 was that Prismatic Sonic wasn't...interesting enough design wise. Giving a guy some chromatic aberration is always going to make my eyes go wide, but just airbrushing pink on and making his eyes pink doesn't make me think he's Prismatic. Especially considering the lore we know that Sonic has the remaining Prism energy? Like he should be more fucked up looking. More gems, more sparkle. What happened to the days of Sonic getting new insane looking forms just for funsies, which happened even back during the classic era because of Hyper Sonic. Prismatic Sonic deserved to look cooler even if it was a fight against an extremely silly looking Eggman, it would have felt right for Sonic the Hedgehog. Yes this gripe got a lot of explanation I'm an artist I'm not sorry

Season three. Good lord where do I begin. I guess with the things I liked like how I did the others. Once again most of the characters were on point, I liked seeing a reality where Tails is a villain (I know Nine isn't Tails, but lbr it's an exploration on what if Tails was alone, what if he had nobody, and the world was just awful). I liked the very ending sequence where Sonic changes his actions, even if it's in a sentimental manner, so that he avoids breaking the crystal again, he avoids restarting the whole process. I liked Sonic and Shadow's interactions through the entire show, it's nice to see them interacting again after so long of just...not, due to Sega ignoring anyone who wasn't Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Eggman.

The dislikes however are very egregious. The pacing was horrendous, why was there over an hour of near constant fighting with cycles of Sonic just stopping petty arguments between the Chaos Council and the shatterverse counterparts. The visuals became less flashy and interesting, it definitely looked rushed and it really shouldn't have been for something overseen by Sega. That sprite sequence was literally the most affronting thing to my eyes as a former Sonic sprite artist, they didn't even try to make it make sense to anything and again, the quality was horrible for something overseen by Sega. The layoffs, the strikes, the direction Netflix has been taking, the direction Man of Action has been taking, it was very clear that the final season was rushed and just shoveled out to us.

Overall, I was disappointed with how they finished off Sonic Prime.

Now onto something very specific about Sonic Prime that I wanna talk about: The characterization of Sonic in specific in this show.

For the most part, he's played pretty well, the voice acting is phenomenal, he's animated with so much expression, he's goofy, he's casual, he's affectionate which is something I believe is an inherent trait of Sonic based on many things in past media...and he's manipulative.

Let me explain what I mean by that

Sonic has always had a very good way of using words to sway people's thoughts and feelings. He's very good at getting under his enemy's skin, at making them pause, at making opportunities to strike as a result or to shift the fight into them just...not fighting anymore. I like this aspect of Sonic's personality because it's an extremely interesting thing to have a heroic character be able to do, and helps with banter, with teaching people.

Because he's a hero, this way of using his words isn't best described as manipulative, because of the connotations of that word being very negative. An exploration of Sonic where he's not a hero, not even an antihero, would be very interesting because of this skill of his.

Sonic Prime doesn't make Sonic evil. But he's certainly not a hero. He's very wishy washy, very stand offish....which is very unlike Sonic compared to most iterations of him where he will fight someone physically even if he doesn't want to, simply because he knows it will at the very least stop them from doing something more dangerous. The worst part of this wishy washy attitude from Prime Sonic is with regards to Nine in specific.

Now I mention the manipulative tactics Sonic uses in other media because he uses them with Nine too. To the point of consistently talking to Nine as if he is Tails, ignoring that Nine is his own person, that he's a real person, and it hurts Sonic to hear Nine defy him because of how much of an individual he is and how he's NOT Tails. He chased the kid into his home, which he broke into, yelled at him, got him arrested by the Chaos Council, and over and over ignored what Nine wanted in favor of what Sonic himself wants. And then when faced with a power hungry Nine he stood back and fought robots instead of rushing up there, with his super sonic speed, to stop the kid. He didn't let Shadow do anything either. Renegade Knuckles punching Nine in the face literally was the best thing that happened on that damn tower bc it showed that at least SOMEONE was willing to try to put a stop to this by any means necessary.

Nine was allowed to keep pushing the prism over and over, further breaking realities, and what did Sonic do?

Continue to try to reason with him.

Just spin dash the fox instead of gaslighting him, Sonic.

Someone probably drew the "I think we're going to have to kill this guy" meme with Sonic and Shadow but it's actually painful how real that shitpost is for the show, and how annoying it is that it's what the show is.

reading through the story so far was a good idea. Im definitely realizing a lot of the dialogue is a bit stilted. This mightve been bc i was reading a Lord of the rings fic while writing some of the sections, so the formality of the language rubbed off on me. But yeah, they not always talking like young, 21st century people! Need to fix that.

Also I'm realizing HOW OFTEN i use shrugging when describing bodylanguage lmaooo. Need to go back and edit that.

I'm doing that same thing that i did in Feathers where the first three chapters are like.. Almost entirely comprised of small expository scenes, meant to catch the reader up to speed from when we last left them. Not so much the first chapter, but definitely the second and third. I'm also setting up stuff for the future plot at a break-neck speed. Like theyre not BAD scenes or chapters, but the excitement definitely doesnt pick up fully until chapter 4. I'm thinking about merging a few chapters together, because some of them aren't that long. Maybe if i combined chapter 2 and 3, it wouldn't feel as bad because it would get all of the exposition over with in a single chapter, instead of it being stretched out?

Anyway.. The development of their strained relationship seems to be at a good balance. Very early on in the story, due to some circumstances, theyre forced to work together in isolation for a few days and its a pretty angsty time bc theyre both still hurting a lot and theyre having a hard time getting along for a big part of it. But then they get better as time goes on, and that carries over pretty effectively into the rest of the story (that i read so far). I think the chapters where this goes down, I may merge. Not all of them, but some. We'll see. I dont mind the flow as it is, but some of the chapters seem a bit shorter than some of the later stuff. Like, this stuff all takes place over 5 chapters, which is a LOT. Thats 25% of the chapters so far. And some of the chapters seem a lot shorter than necessary

I've read through about half of the story so far and i'm hoping as i read further, i see that i've manage to bridge the gap between "I'm still in love and i think i made a mistake" Morgan and "I'm fine, he's just a good friend" Morgan (Who, to be clear, is in Denial). Bc at the beginning shes VERY conflicted, and by chapter 20, shes fully keeping him at an arms length because shes absolutely sure that shes over him and shes desperately clinging to her "we're friends" mantra.

Anyway those were jsut some thoughts i had. This is mostly something i wrote down for my own benefit so i can remember it for later when i finish the story and go through my rewrites and edits!

okay again i'm gonna blow through the plot stuff bc i don't care it's not the part that matters. the doctor avoids regeneration by channeling the energy into his hand. mickey and jackie are here now! martha goes to germany and the daleks are speaking german lmfao. the daleks have an instrument called the crucible and taught the doctor by dropped the tardis into an incinerator...

bitch you THOUGHT!!! the hand is calling out to donna and she touches it and gets slammed w regen energy and then the hand grows into naked david tennant. tentoo has arrived! a dalek shoots jack but he's fine. we learn tentoo has one heart bc he's half human! his singular heartbeat "rippled back" which is what donna was hearing that drew her to the hand and he says "we were always heading for this" HAVE I NOT BEEN SAYING?? THIS WAS ALWAYS GOING TO HAPPEN SHE'S BEEN DEAD SINCE THE BEGINNING

martha tries to use the world-exploding key and gets teleported to the dalek ship and they explain they made a "reality bomb" using the aligned planets as a scope. like the planets aligning in hercules to release the titans. davros gets on his bullshit "you take ordinary people and you turn them into weapons" he's not wrong actually. the doctor does very much do that. "always running and never looking back because you dare not, out of shame" again got it in one

donna's powers activate bc she got turned part time lord by the regen energy! regenergy. sure. she's the doctordonna and ten remembers the ood foretold such. always listen to the ood. so now there's three doctors! jack says "i can't tell you what i'm thinking right now" bc he's narsty. dalek caan has betrayed the daleks by letting all this shit happen "i saw what we did, creator, and i said no more". tentoo explodes every dalek. i'm fine with that who cares

k9 is here! everyone teams up to drag the earth back home to its proper place. the tardis is functioning appropriately bc it finally has enough drivers and it's sweet to see everyone get along. rose, jackie, and tentoo get dropped off in their parallel universe bc she needs to babysit him?? "he's me, when we first met" so she gets a project man. i'm glad rose gets her very own tenth doctor to fuck but this is kind of a copout ending for her sorry. that said "how was that sentence going to end" "does it need saying?" and then tentoo DOES finish it and kisskiss. good for her genuinely

everyone else goes back home and donna starts glitching out bc a time lord brain can't live in a human body and it's going to kill her. he takes all her memories, wipes her brain, as she's crying and begging him not to. it's hard to watch, it's very violating, and it's a bullshit copout for her too. i know rtd has said he does not like the way the episode ended but honestly couldn't untangle the knot in a satisfying way and i do get that, there were a LOT of pieces in play. still bullshit to me tho

he drops her at home and warns wilf and sylvia that they can't ever tell her the truth or it'll kill her. he gets wet in the rain pathetically and the episode is over. as i said last time, this story makes no fucking sense but the fanservice really does work for me and everyone is so charming, all the pieces falling into place from the season-long foreshadowing, it really is a great story. not my fave finale, i'm too much of a sucker for s3, but i think it was probably the best possible way to get all these characters involved in a way that felt natural for them and useful for the story

Once again thinking of differences in GM and general presentation styles. I've been getting comments from players like. bro you expanded my MIIIIND I came in with a blank character and D&D mindset and I have GROWN. Or like. CAN'T WAIT TO DO THIS AGAIN THIS IS SO DIFFERENT.

Because it's a living mythology, the definition of show, don't tell, with a moral not overbearing but suddenly so overwhelming everyone freezes in their tracks. Something tangible for characters and players both to walk away with beyond burned time and fake loot rewards.

And like, I look at other campaigns and just see Lord XsdFDKFkD of the SJDKf realm is big bad, go into this dungeon that makes no goddamn sense on why anyone would invest in all these structures and traps for the infinity dungeon with nonsense rooms only there for tricks or loot. Now kick in the next door. Maybe this one has a tile puzzle because the DM is obsessed with DDR. Logic, fuck logic, this is SPARTA.

And even when I build a setting in chaos itself people realize every plant and lightbulb has a reason to add to something somehow, but they have to travel the journey to listen and find the meaning. And talking to players like. Complexity and riddles for the fuck of a challenge rating and none other get real boring when you realize it's all the same. And a lot of it is like. Why. Oh we put the dark lord in a box behind a riddle wall after building a needlessly complex structure full of wasted space and resources but we're good, nobody's known how to read for 2,000 years.

And meanwhile the other GM is in my DM like. YOU KNOW WHAT IM GONNA MAKE A DUNGEON BASED ON LA MULANA, HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED THAT? IT'S STUPID LONG AND HARD, ITS AN ENDLESS DUNGEON, YEAH, I THINK I'M GONNA MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THAT FOR GOD.

And I'm like

Bro buddy I love you but if you think the length or challenge of this campaign is the only element that players are attracted to, you are missing the point yourself again. Complexity and tedious length for the fuck of it are simply not fun. It gets boring in video games much less having to stop and roll 32 dice every nothingburger room or pointlesss trap and having to do the algebra for it. You have to give them a reason to care, and you cant just TELL them they have to care, people don't work like that. All I hear on a game dev level is "they'll never run out of doors to kick and dice to roll. Plans beyond that? idfk".

Meanwhile our earlier convos like

honestly another reason me and the ex wife just weren't compatible RP types either beyond the romance push. During our first breakup in the early 201X period is when I first made Kion in concept as an offshoot of the old Zenthus character with all of this, started playing in someone's campaign, MADE the first Xorvintaal and she showed back up like, ok but since Zenthus is duality what if it was TWINS. And like. I cracked. Bc she wanted it. Like yeah sure why not. But the design went "big pretty strong blue elf with horns, anger problem" and stopped there, so now that I'm remastering it without her around, while literally NOTHING is lost mythologically or in plot contribution, I have this awkward stray end kinda writ in to acknowledge since other players in this server that survived the old cycles had MET said brother. And now I'm just. Stuck with this awkward lump of character tied to this otherwise flawless mythology even getting in the way of an actual HOOR AND SET BE TWINS build that would have been available with a brotherlike character, but no. Duality is one infinitely deep character and one pretty blue barbarian with giant moobs. Fml.

Hm. I wanted my dragonriders of pern iron man au to basically be a fusion where it's the plot of - or major points of - iron man transposed onto a pernese setting, with changes to fit the context of course. But reading other pern fanfic im like. Part of me wants to just play around with the sandbox of tony impresses a gold dragon, without the iron man plot points, or at least skipping figuring out how to map the whole thing with him being captured and tortured and Obadiah trying to kill him, onto pern. But then I feel like it's a cop-out on the complicated difficult bits of the story and lazy. Idk.

Sigh, idk

Maybe the whole kidnapping/torture/attempted murder and character growth happens before tony impresses a dragon? That would..actually really solve a lot of the problems, because how would you keep someone and their dragon apart so as to prevent rescue? So it happens before he bonds to ironath. Okay that makes way more sense!! Obadiah is Tony's superior in some way - maybe tony is the son of the now-dead lord holder of my made-up Stark Hold, and Obadiah made lord warder, bc tony was technically underage when his parents are killed (im going to go with by holdless folk for this). Of course deposing Obadiah (tho mostly its obie tries to kill tony for good and also kind of goes mad...not sure how he dies, tho. Maybe have the wrong-firestone, the stuff that explodes on contact with water, be in some corner collected by holdless folk to use as bombs, and Obie falls back and into it and they fought in water right before? Or something, idk. Anyway he dies, and tony is technically lord holder now. He gets confirmed as well, after maybe some usual back and forth but they don't want the hold in contention...

Okay so how does he go from lord holder to dragonrider? Obviously he has some health thing occur related to his torture, and believes he won't live long enough (and not long enough to sire an heir) so... I guess he gives the Holding to Jarvis who has been doing much of the work of Holding anyway, especially recently with tony sick. He doesn't keep it a secret from his friends in this, or at least not from jarvis, who has known tony since he was a child and honestly should have been lord warder in the first place. I guess he doesn't keep it a secret from pepper, either. Not sure if he tells rh'dey (rh'dey) who is a dragonrider, maybe bc he's busy and tony doesn't want to bother him, and he asks pepper not to tell rh'dey either when they see each other.

Tony has a blue firelizard named Dummie, because the flitt is not the brightest, but tony loves him. Writing stuff down as it occurs to me ok

Ah, anyway, pepper does end up telling rh'dey that tony is sick, which gets somehow up to Weyrleader N'klas, who decides no, tony can't be allowed to die (he doesn't know tony gave Lord Holdership to Jarvis, not yet anyway), now that Obadiah is no longer causing problems among the Holders about the Weyrs, and stark hold being neutral-to-friendly with the weyr now is beneficial to N'klas' plans, plus he has heard how intelligent tony is, and he has journeyman status in his craft, so all in all he has reasons to try to keep this man alive. So he sends for the Master Healer, but he believes if he sends the Healer *to* tony, the man will not receive it well, and he wont be able to treat Tony. So he has his weyr harper, who is trained in methods that one could call 'spy' skills, go to Stark Hold under a different guise. She will bring the medicine which the Healer is certain will treat Tony's ailment - heart-related and stress-related troubles - with her and will manage to find ways to give him the doses. Eventually he will be told, when his heart is strong enough he won't have an episode from the stress...

Yeah, this isn't going to go over well once tony finds out. And pepper has no idea, she thought maybe rh'dey would ask for the Weyrleader to send the Healer. Tony's reputation for being difficult is why the Weyrleader made the call, but it does make tony very displeased with him and nearly undoes N'klas' plans. Whoopsie doodles. Though he accepts that the not telling him is due to the risk of his health worsening from stress, but they could easily have just had the Healer come and tell him what ailed him and give him the medicines himself! So the Weyrleader is personally on Tony's shitlist for a long time. Deservedly tbh. He still appreciates the weyr and dragonriders but yeah.

And that ends parts 1+2.

Part 3 is where tony is at the Weyr to watch a Hatching when the gold dragnet hatchling decides to say fuck tradition and screw all these candidates, I want that guy. Oops. Ironath is very strong-willed, and Tony loves her but wishes it wasn't so complicated. He is glad he put in the paperwork while he was sick because it is quite easy now to have the Lord Holdership officially transfered to Jarvis, and the other Lord Holders reluctantly accept this because well, as Steward Jarvis has had much of the running of the Hold already.

Pepper impresses a Gold at the next Hatching, also. I was gonna have her bond a different color maybe at the same hatching but I thought that might be too many stands impressions in the same hatching, and also I can't see her with anything but Gold, either, so. She is an official candidate then, tho, she gets Searched. Woo, the trio are all at the Weyr now! Also she meets H'gan ;)

Ah, so part 3, continues with a dragonrider appearing from an accidental trip between times - from the past! No one has ever timed it to the future, not without following someone from the past, and yet somehow S'teve and Bronze Rogerseth did it. Yes this becomes a stevetony story bc I love them your honor. Ahem. Anyway, stuff! Friendship! Romance! They probably are dumb abt feelings and don't say anything without walking it back until Ironath rises and they express themselves before they end up unable to lol

And then I guess somehow the avengers plot happens, idk. Part 4 ig.

Oh also I'm Sure Tony and N'klas had so much fun discussing Tony impressing a gold and how he's now one of his riders at shield weyr and etc etc 🙃

Ah, I'll figure out how the plot of the avengers movie works for a pernese context another time.

i honestly rly enjoy being an 18+ blog vs 16+ bc i find my interactions in my inbox were less annoying when the minors for the most part aren’t in there 😭 and i can make unfiltered comments and jokes now that i don’t have to keep everything pg. plus it’s a lot easier to just have everything on one blog whether it’s sfw or nsfw instead of having to jump between a side or log into a different one completely. so if ur thinking of making the shift, i’d say do it !! hopefully ur followers rn aren’t majority minors or that would be complicated 🥲 if you wanna keep them separate, i suggest making a nsfw side so that ur main is sfw and okay to follow/interact with anything and ur nsfw will just be ur adult space on the side. if ur not into side blogs u can also just make a separate new blog but logging in and out is AWFUL if u ask me 🥲

and writing nsfw isn’t easy always !! sometimes you feel like you’re repeating yourself or are writing the same things over and over and etc but tbh just practicing makes a big difference. my smut a year ago was 🥲 a rather comical attempt i’d say LMAKFNAMFJ and it’s not the best now either i wouldn’t say but it’s significantly improved. reading other works and just practicing is probably the best way to improve as much of a chore as it seems but once you find a bit of your own rhythm, it’s not so bad !! i enjoy writing the smut scenes now for the most part in my fics—sometimes it takes some time for me to find the writing mood to do that, but once i’m in the zone i do enjoy it !! so hopefully you’ll find your groove soon

hi hi going through your salt rewatch tag bc i love the hot takes. anyway long ask incoming sry in advance. idk if this has been answered already since the post is a bit old, but re: your comments on spyfall part 2 and gallifrey in the bubble universe. i'm pretty sure the idea in hell bent was that the dr and clara could get out was because 1) they were at the end of everything and the universe is dying so timespace is weaker and 2) the time lords don't really WANT either of them on gallifrey, especially clara who's already at this point a disruption in time, so they sort of do what time lords do and just flick away the problem. i agree w you tho that hell bent is kinda ambiguous here and tbh on rewatch i've just kinda chalked it up to "it needs to be that way to make the plot go brr" and the emotional core of the episode (12/clara's relationship and her death) is strong enough for me that that's enough. (which, tbh, is one of my big complaints about the ch*b era bc i can forgive a lot of handwaving plot bullshit in dr who as long as it doesn't take me out of the story and more importantly, if it's so the emotional core of the story and the character relationships can take precedence. we don't get time to invest in 13's character relationships so like. the only thing that's left are the plot holes) as for why the master isn't stuck on gallifrey, i'm pretty sure that's part of what "the doctor falls" was supposed to explain:

12: (to Simm!Master) The last time I saw you, you were on your way to Gallifrey. SIMM!MASTER: Well, I didn't stay. Why would I stay? 12: So they cured your little condition and kicked you out. SIMM!MASTER: It was a mutual kicking me out. the master has never gotten along w the time lords so tbh it makes sense to me that they wouldn't want him in their specially protected pocket universe on a wartorn gallifrey. anyway that's how he's in the dr falls and subsequently regenerates into missy? dhawan!master? the timeline would be clearer if not for the fact that dhawan!master seems to have no memory of being missy. anyway i agree with you that it's weird that gallifrey lost basically all of its pocket universe protection in 13's era. the implication i got in "the doctor falls" is that the master being able to leave gallifrey was pretty hard, and it was sort of necessary that the time lords kick him out as opposed to him just leaving on his own. if i want to be generous, i could say that simm!master's previous experience being on pocket universe gallifrey gave him the info necessary as dhawan!master to go back and blow it up, but idk if at this point i'm just grasping at straws.

and yes the gallifrey stuff does makes sense, thanks for reminding me! and haha yeah doctor who definitely does do a lot of plot go brr 😂 and yeah the gallifrey stuff does become background in hell bent which i agree with you the focus is more on 12 and clara. (and i definitely agree with you there’s no emotional anchor in this era to lean on when plot gets messy). i don’t know if moffat wanted to do anything more with gallifrey seeing as he made it such a big deal of bringing it back but that’s all past now.

yeah every showrunner seems to want to do radically different things with gallifrey which is frustrating as a viewer because imo it’s holds less and less meaning every time they change it and i end up just not caring about it all together.

and yeah your dhawan!master theory would make the most sense i could see that. and the whole missy thing is very confusing, because ch*bnall just point blank refuses to ever mentioned it, meaning fans have to fill in the blanks themselves (which obviously happens from time to time i admit). but it’s a shame because missy’s character arc was really interesting and fun and to act like it never happened at all is a weird one to say the least (i don’t have anything against the master going back to their ‘old ways’ but it uh definitely needed more than timeless child bs justification we got). it’s not like this was a terrible choice or had a blanket negative reception that ch*bnall decided we must do an U-turn on that immediately, rather it was actually quite popular within fandom, so who knows honestly.

cannot stress enough how much i love that they added that. one of my biggest fears for the depiction of the Pogue’s grieving period next season was that they would just completely forget to have them be sad about Sarah, too? especially Kiara.

like, yes, John B obviously has way more history with them all but Sarah was also their friend. it really just boils down to me not wanting Sarah to just be “John B’s girlfriend” but have actual relationships with the others this season ANYWAYS MOVING ON-

so i just wonder if this is the big reunion? if not why...the fuck? is this happening? how did they get on here? i have so many questions?

Hi, sorry for being slow at answering!

In no particular order:

Ok, so I liked the 3 from MXTX:

- Grandmaster of Diabolic Cultivation/ Mo Dao Zu Shi

This one I loved but it has a particular style that ppl might not like in that it feels jumpy, confusing and with information gaps while reading, even though eventually everything that matters does end up being explained...in other works this would probably be just lazy writing, but here it is clearly an intentional choice bc 1) she doesn’t do this in her other novels 2) this is in WWX’s pov and dude has heavy ptsd and adhd, plus he tends to pretend to take everything lightly as a coping mechanisms...all this put together and it’s easy to understand why the story has such an unreliable narrator that even the other characters constantly point it out. I ended up loving this extra layer of storytelling.

- Heaven Official’s Blessings/ Tian Guan Ci Fu

If you’re in the mood for a saga type long ass novel with a ton of interesting side stories and side characters with a main character who is a true cinnamon bun in sweet romance with a side dish of sweet sweet aaaangst.

- Scum Villains Self Saving System

The most entertaining out of all of them. It manages to be a parody of two genres, both danmeis and wuia/jianghu harem het novels (fighter of destiny style) with OP leads, while also being its own cute and funny story with a heart to it.

From other authors:

- Meatbun’s 2ha/ Dumb Husky and his White Cat Shizun

What if someone took a look at the parody that is SVSSS and said...”no, you know what? This really deserves to be an epic, long ass, and I mean, topping old classics’ length novel packed with angst, filled with pain and topped with despair...and then we’re sprinkling some funfetti on top to fool y’all”...and you know what? that’s some good cake. (If you’re into cdramas SVSSS is to 2ha what The Romance of Tiger and Rose is to Goodbye My Princess).

- Priest’s Sha Po Lang:

Steampunk China plus creepy voodoo tribal ritual magic, involved in internal and external wars over petrol (with a different name) and with our leads in Iron Man suits, fighting, among other enemies hot young(er) hands on, on the field, western troop General, the Pope, that I can only visualize in my head as Jude Law. I tell you all of this nonsense just to say that instead of the ridiculous fun this should be, it ends up being a very compelling romance with lots of scheming and heavy plot and some heartbreaking scenes.

- The Golden Stage:

This is a court drama type novel with friends-to-rivals-to-lovers that is just the right length and compelling with not too many plot twists but two main characters who are really great both individually and together and this is the one out of all in the list I feel like re reading the most. It really is a solid read and I feel like I’m selling it short, bc it really is good. It is similar to Sha Po Lang and To Rule in a Turbulent World, a simpler version of those but not worse for it.

(Since you said top 5 and I’ve said 6, I regretfully cut down Heaven Official’s Blessing bc even though I love it, unlike MDZS or SVSSS, it didn’t feel like a standalone novel because some of the several storylines of the side characters that I loved were left open ended (although the main characters had a complete story arc), as if this book was supposed to be the first of a series and those characters would have their own spinoff books where I’d know where their story took them...except this really is a standalone, and so the lack of resolution bothers me).

>> Honorable Mentions:

- To Rule in a Turbulent World

This one doesn’t go in the top 5 list yet bc it’s not fully translated, last time I checked (tho it’s very near the end). As an ongoing novel, I adore it. If the ending isn’t terrible it might be in my top 3. It’s similar to the two above in plotlines but it has a quality to it that it takes care to make every character in it multidimensional. There are no good and bad characters, even the ones on the opposite side are given something that makes them relatable and human. Plus, the characters all change throughout the novel, most of all the protagonists and the novel gives itself breathing time between events where you just chill with the characters and learn about random things like agricultural practices.

- The Wife Is First

This one is just that light fluff feel good one that is great to pick up from time to time since it’s on going. Dumb Jock husband did everything wrong in his first life, gets a re-do and from then on it’s adorable respect the spouse juice and awe of said spouse smarts. Cute. Also, there’s a baby pet tiger.

-Faraway Wanderers and Lord Seventh/Qi Ye by Priest:

Qi Ye is similar to To Rule in A Turbulent World/The Golden Stage/Sha Po Lang. I really liked it still, just a tiny bit less than these. Since it’s the same author as SPL and I think it was written earlier, I have to say, the writing only got better.

Faraway Wanderers is a short read, but you’re only gonna like it if you’re ok with amoral main characters (I guess that is true for many on this list but it’s more obvious in this one bc the novel and the characters are unapologetic about it).

- YuWu by Meatbun - Still reading it, but is isn’t grabbing me like 2ha did.

- Silent Readings by Priest:

I love crime fiction novels (love Ding Mo’s novels) and this is that type of conspiracy, murder novel with smart criminals and smart investigators. Little romance, but still there.

- Guardian by Priest:

Priest is hilarious and except the last part that gets a bit heavy on the lore this is just a joy to read. Also pretty short.

- Advance Bravely:

I read it a long time ago and it’s okayish, with some cute and some weird, problematic characters.

- Addicted/ Heroin:

Also read it (this is 2 books) ages ago...and this one is NOT cute. It starts out as a pretty normal, but kind of toxic very typical oldschool drama/manga romance right down to the step brothers’ trope....and then it keeps escalating to new levels of WTF am I reading?!! All I have to say for this one is, that while I cannot recommend it per se, nor say it’s good, the title really is fitting, bc it is addictive as f.
