6 albums I’ve been listening to a lot lately! Plus one track from each that I’m especially fond of.

The Mandrake Project - Bruce Dickinson - "Many Doors to Hell"
I waited 18 god damn years for this album. And while Iron Maiden has released four albums in that time period, I'm actually a bigger fan of Bruce's solo material. This song in particular does hit on a lot of things I liked to write about around the time his last solo album was released. A vampire who wants to be human again. Not quite, but I did (and do I guess) like to explore the blessing and the curse of being a vampire.
Vessels - Starset - "Telepathic" & "Telepathic (Acoustic Version)"
Starset was the band @telekinetic-issue recommended to me after I recommended Ghost. So the great music exchange of 2022 lead, what is currently, my favorite Starset album. This song hit very close to me I listened to it obsessively as it very much captured my feelings towards my former best friend, before I finally managed to let that friendship go finally even though we hadn't really spoken since 2015.
72 Seasons - Metallica - "Lux Æterna"
Probably the first Metallica album since, uh, forever where I truly feel like they band tried to put out a quality song every track (don't argue with me about Load & ReLoad, there was ONE solid album if they made better track selections and had a bit tighter arrangement). As for "Lux Æterna," it's one of those pick-me-up songs that motivates me to try to get my life together.
Infestissumam - Ghost - "Year Zero"
In terms of album, it was this for Prequelle, Meliora, Impera. Impera, burned out listening to and absolutely hate one song on that album. Meliora benefits by having the Popestar EP on it, and thus having "Square Hammer." Prequelle has "Faith" and "Miasma"/"Dance Macabre" (you really need to listen to these two tracks back-to-back), and "Witch Image."
Infestissumam I listen to the most and regularly since it has my all-time favorite Ghost song, "Year Zero" and the "band" at this time was more focused on using religious imagery in such a dark way that hits the bitter ex-Catholic heart of mine in such a way that no other band can.
Once - Nightwish - "Planet Hell"
Tarja's last album with the band. Probably their last great album (no disrespect to Anette Olzon, Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum were good albums). But a song about the contradictory nature of humanity and the notion that hell is really simply planet Earth? Yeah, that's a song for me.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex OST + - Yoko Kanno - "Lithium Flower"
Yes, I'm trash. I know this. I'm Tumblr. I came to Tumblr because of anime and manga. But this song is just 1. Amazing. 2. And based solely on one line, it's like the character song for my blorbo. But Yoko Kanno is one of those composers where, once you hear her work, you just bow to her brilliance. Her mixing of styles and finding singers to fit whatever vision she has is nothing short of amazing. But this song is one of those that when it comes on, just don't bother me because I will ignore everything to listen to the song in full.

Talk shop Tuesday: What’s your process like when writing a fic inspired by music? Are you usually inspired by the lyrics? The melody? The ✨vibes✨ of the song, etc? And how does this translate into your writing? 🎤
I am a lyrics and vibes girlie. When I hear that one (1) line that I can connect to a character or scene? It's over for y'all.
The way that usually translates into actual writing is the song goes on loop while a music video ft. Blorbos plays in my head and I start to build out a plot from that.
Recent examples are: now I know your name (but not who you are) - the lyrics that the title was taken from inspired the whole fic and gave me a vision of Peter seeing MJ/Ned after NWH, getting the smallest glimpse into their current life but not having any clue about the complexities of it. Just getting a simple fact about them and that's it.
Make it a universe you can live in - I could talk about TGW by Maisie Peters being such a Peter song endlessly but once again the titular lyric gave me vibes of Peter and MJ trying to adjust to the world they know and accept the choices they've made. The whole song is about growth and acceptance and momentum.
Ready for you to come home - Orange Juice will always be a Parksborn song for me. I saw a video of Noah breaking down this song a little more, and that vibe he discussed about people experiencing this hurt together, moving on separately, finding comfort and the distance different coping mechanisms can create gave me such a vision of Harry, MJ and Peter after the events of MSM2

i have a lot of works im really fond of, and my favourite has yet to be posted, but my favourite posted fic is In The Town Of Agua Fria (Rode A Stranger One Fine Day). its a cowboy au and im rly proud of it 😈 (also as i was searching it up to link it i found out, much to my surprise, that i am not the only unhinged person to hear a country song from the fifties and immediately apply it to the blorbos. it was, of course, a supernatural fan to do it first lmao.)

i have a lot of fave passages but i was rereading some of my older stuff recently and i remembered this one that i'm rly proud of:
“I left so you could stay!”
“I didn’t want to stay without you!”
Lance’s chest is heaving, and tears blur his vision. Keith looks shocked, mouth dropped open and eye blown wide. “I didn’t want to stay without you,” Lance repeats through a sob. “But you left, and I didn’t have a choice. You left me, and then so did everyone else, and I was alone, and you left me.”
“Lance,” Keith whispers, close to tears himself.
Lance breath hitches, and he can barely speak over the lump in his throat. “I never wanted you to leave. I would have followed you, but I knew you didn’t want me to. You needed to figure something out on your own, and I did my best to accept that, but you broke my heart, Keith. There was nothing I wanted or needed more than to be at your side but I wasn’t worthy of you.”
“Lance,” Keith begs again, reaching over to cup his face. “You were always worthy, okay? Always. You never had to earn my respect, or fight for a place at my side. It was always yours to take. We’re equals. There’s no one I need more than you. When I left… I was struggling. I was afraid. I was afraid of my past and my future and I was afraid of what I wanted to be with you. Of what I already was with you. I didn’t know how to handle myself, and when you came to me worried about five lions and six paladins I thought I had a solution. But I was wrong. I was scared and I made the wrong choice. But,” Keith wipes Lance’s tears with his thumbs, pressing their foreheads together. “I want to fix things. You and me. I’ll do anything, Lance. Anything to earn back your trust, your love.”
“You don’t have to do anything,” Lance sobs. “You just have to stay.”
Keith cradles Lance’s head to his chest, and he goes willingly, clutching Keith’s shirt in clenched fists. “I’ll stay,” he promises, petting Lance’s hair as he cries. “For the rest of my life, until the end of my days, Lance McClain, I will stay with you.”

you might be suspecting an Obedience boy but no! i wanna talk about Sorrow from my Valloroth series, because i love him, and he loves any chance to talk about himself
1 - Are you named after anyone? - I chose my name like a good little Zashi, and if I’m named after anything it’s the fate the Archdemons decided for me—if they want my life to be a misery, I can at least have fun with it.
2 - When was the last time you cried? - I laughed so hard I cried at camp last night, does that count?
3 - Do you have kids? - Unlikely. I’m enchanted against such things when it comes to infernii, and unless the gods have decided to make us compatible with dracarii recently, there’s little chance I’ve spawned an egg. That would be interesting though…how many horns do you think they’d end up with?
4 - Do you use sarcasm? - Oh, no, sweetheart, never.
5 - What's the first thing that you notice about someone? - The way they react to me. It’s not self-centered, it’s self defence; some Vallorosians still have a few quirky little hangups about infernii, and Zashi and Naazgaran infernii alike always react to broken horns.
It’s the ones who act as though they don’t care about any of it that you have to watch.
6 - What's your eye colour? - Cyan. Not human-cyan, infernii cyan, the whole thing, and no it doesn’t make our vision worse, despite the persistent rumours. If anything missing half your eye ought to make you see worse—how do the rest of you manage?
7 - Scary movies or happy endings? - There’s nothing like a Zashi horror story in the middle of an Infernus night, with demons howling beyond the camp walls, the huddled breath of a dozen young infernii making the tent so humid you can hardly breathe.
Fear’s as good a way as any to stay awake.
8 - Any special talents? - Apart from looking this good? Finding the right people and bringing out their unique skills. I’ve an eye for talent, and I do hate seeing it go to waste.
9 - Where were you born? - Infernus.
10 - What are your hobbies? - Food, fucking, and a little bit of anarchist plotting. You know, all the fun ones. I did a bit of fire-dancing once, but it’s tricky when you've lost your fire-resistance. Maybe I ought to take it up again now that Excellence made me that enchantment...I'm sure I won't burn down more than half the K'zinla headquarters.
11 - Have you any pets? - Does the Wraith count? He acts enough like a cat to count, I feel.
12 - What sports do you play/have played? - I’ve never been a very sports for sports sake sort of infernii. Aspiration taught me to fight to begin with, and she put me on my tail more times than I care to remember.
13 - How tall are you? - 5’9”, but we’ll call it an even 6’ with the heels, shall we? You’re not going to see me without them unless one or both of us is flat on our backs, and at that point, height isn’t the part of me you’re going to want to measure, now, is it?
14 - Favourite subject in school? - I used to like magic, and history. Never would have been much of a wizard, I expect—too much memorising and not enough fun—and since I wasn’t born a witch, that was it for that.
History though…now that’s worth remembering. So many don’t. They like to forget, don’t they, the things that happened? So they can pretend the world has always been the way it is.
Not the Zashi though, no, they have songs going back to the days of the Archdemons, and I’d trust their accuracy over any book.
15 - Dream job? - I aleady have it, don’t I? Prince of the House of the Houseless, captain of Vetusak K’zinla—what more could you ask for? The travel benefits alone are unmatched!

hello sorry i am aware you reblogged the song association ask game yesterday but. i am Dying to hear about the songs you associate with the vorkosigan saga!! i'd particularly like to hear about ivan (he is, regrettably, my blorbo), if you need a focus, but i'd honestly be very excited no matter what you spoke about! (also sorry i am @proto-language, but this is my main blog which i have to send asks from dfkgfdkg)

You might be interested in the Vorkosigan Character Theme Songs video I made a while back, which includes a lot of the characters (make sure to stop right after Ivan's turn at the 12:40 mark, though, as the rest have spoilers for CVA).
However, as I had to limit myself to ~20 second clips of each song to keep the video length reasonable, and since you requested Ivan, I'll take this ask as a chance to talk about my choice for him in a bit more detail.
Who, by the way, was surprisingly one of the hardest characters to find a song for. Like. You'd think there would be a lot of songs with his vibe? And maybe there are and I just haven't found them, but a lot of the ones I listened to felt more like ... a Miles-interpretation of Ivan rather than Ivan himself, if that makes sense.
I ended up choosing is RUNAWAY by half•alive - I feel like its cheerful, relaxed tone fits his personality, while the lyrics, which are about expectations and identity, could explain why that's how he is. I know there is at least one canon (and some fandom) discussion of how much of Ivan's personality is due to the pressures he was under or whether he's just naturally like that, but I feel like there must have been at least some introspection about being good enough for his family's expectations, while also not so good that he accidentally starts a civil war.

He does try and steer clear of the politics in ACC as much as possible, but when he can't, is usually the voice of reason:

I scan the exits that embrace an easy out
But the song is overall pretty positive, with the singer learning to start to get over the expectations that surround them, which I think fits the tone of his character arc in the later books.

Is something more than I can plan

Vigilante Shit popped up on my shuffle last night after i rewatched Glass Onion and bro……. It’s so Helen. Right off the bat about “Sometimes I wonder which one will be your last lie. They say looks can kill and I might try.” She is dressing for REVENGE, bitch. And for that matter, Karma is LITERALLY Andi. Spider-Boy King of Thieves a.k.a. Miles Bron.
High Infidelity reminds me of Tom and Shiv from Succession for reasons that I hope are obvious because if I start explaining it I’m just gonna go insane over these rich assholes on main and I can’t do that again. Also Kendall def cries when he hears Anti-Hero.
