I don't have much of anything groundbreaking to say. I haven't publicly said much in relation to side order in the first place, i don't want to build up crazy expectations, and I've seen much of the fanbase making solid theories anyways. also there has been a lot less information compared to ROTM which is great, I don't want to be able to predict the whole story before the game comes out. I'd rather be surprised like i was with octo expansion! here I just want to put out my thoughts real quick so people know where I stand and that yes i am aware of the Hints and Foreshadowing

Marina's quote at the end of her interview in Splatune 3 is relevant of course, gives us a sense of what this whole world of order is. But did she build it this whole digital simulation, or was it something she found? (mix of both perhaps? found it, contributed to parts of it and it went out of her control?)

//vent I really need to get this off my chest. After Splatoon 3's final splatfest comes to a close, I'm probably going to stop interacting with the Splatoon community as much as I can. It's been four years since I've gotten truly into Splatoon, (that's a complicated, yet much nicer story for some other time) and while I don't regret it by any means, it's definitely been an exhausting ride, and I kinda want to get off of it before I barf.

Getting the most obvious thing out of the way, the way Nintendo has been handling Splatoon 3 has been really disappointing. It has far more improvements than flaws, but this game has had some really bizarre decisions made with it compared to the first two games. Maps, kits, ETC... I'm not gonna delve into the specifics, you probably already know what I'm going on about. Secondly, while what I just said still holds true, I feel like the community reactions to these changes have been... a bit too much? Like, yeah, splatfests are imbalanced. Maps have been bad. (up until Drizzle Season 2023, at least) But these problems have been absolutely blown out of the water. Fucking, death threats have been sent to people who join the Shiver's teams. Despite the whole appeal of the Splatoon community being a place of self expression and lack of judgement, a lot of Splatoon subcultures really... aren't that great. Being deadass, competitive Splatoon is boring, and its players are super rude and annoying. I don't like to generalize, but I've yet to interact with a single comp player I enjoy talking to. Every single one I've met has tried forcing me to play a certain way, no matter if I'm even fucking playing with them. I was harassed for using sticks. In a B- lobby. Back when I was new to Splatoon 2. The hacking scene is a dumpster fire. The main person who's created the most well known and fun Splatoon hacking system is a piece of shit, for one. For two, have you even touched the first game anytime after 2017? Yeah, it's full of hackers. Can't play turf war for 15 minutes without having to sit there and not play the game because someone is hacking and getting away with it because Nintendo doesn't moderate the servers anymore. The Coroika fandom is if you took Splatoon fandom and infected it with My Hero Academia fans. Yeah. Are any of you familiar with Splatoon Florida? It was an old parody account on Twitter that I used to own that got popular SUPER fast. Could not handle it. It spawned nearly 50 clone accounts based on the other 49 united states, and I had even gotten impersonation accounts pretending to be me and saying really, really awful things. This paired with the queerphobia I faced and hatemail in general stacked on top of my mother having multiple strokes and almost dying at the time, pushed me over the edge, and I deleted SplatoonFL after someone told me that they hoped my mother had another stroke and died. Now, I feel like shit for name dropping people in my vent, as it's been awhile since most of this garbage has happened and I don't want to seem petty, plus this isn't intended to be a callout post. But I really do feel the need to let this shit out of my system, and frankly I'm tired of watching these people be appreciated while remembering what they've done to me, small and insignificant or not.

I'd like to restate that I don't regret my time in the community one bit. I love it here for the most part. It's just gotten far too much, and I'm. Frankly a little bit done and ready to move on. I'll try to keep strong and stay for a bit so I can enjoy the rest of Splatoon 3's update cycle with my friends and the people I enjoy being around. After that though, unless something happens to change my mind, I'll be gone after that.

Knowing the current state of the Splatoon community, I wouldn't be surprised if I started getting harassed again for this post. Since we've calmed down after the last Splatfest, I can finally bitch about some Shiver fans' takes.

My God she did NOT try to "change the subject and try to make Frye comfortable".

Shiver SUCKS. She's greedy, she brags when she wins, she'll say anything she has to to get vote. That's WHY SHE'S FUN! Every member of Deep Cut Kinda Sucks. That is the point!

Big Man does get a little carried away and sometimes gets worked up (though he's still being nice) during the fests announcements. Frye barely even tries to make an argument (her job!) because she's too busy being silly.

None of them give a damn about the results. They're here to party and have fun. Sure, they like to win but they don't care if they lose. Almost every single time, the winner says something along the lines of "all three options are nice though" or "let's do all three!"

Shiver did exactly what she did for the Nessie vs Aliens vs Bigfoot festival: lie her ass off. This time, instead of lying about seeing Nessie, she pretended that her choice was better because she legit doesn't know how to do a fist bump. It's silly! It's endearing! She's a loser! Girlfailure! She doesn't care if it's embarrassing, she came clean because it's no big deal and she won! She won eight fucking times in a row, she gets to brag if she pleases.

It's fine for your fav to not be perfect. You don't need to go out of your way to mischaracterize an entire dialogue because you need to defend her from the "haters". And quite frankly, wouldn't it be worse if she was babying the other members (or singling Frye out) because they didn't win for months? Don't you think it would be condescending? Her lines were implied to be prewritten. None of them have a problem with what they have to say. They might even write them themselves for all we know!

Deep Cut are all good friends. That's why they don't give a single flying into space fuck about who wins, the things said to win, or the things said after they won.

And, finally, ofc it also goes for Frye and Big Man fans. Neither care if they lose. Frye doesn't even try (ie: she had less than 10% of the bite for Team Fame and had no reaction, especially when she could have made great arguments for it since it logically beat the other two teams (sorry for breaking Splatfest law guys, it needed to be said)), Big Man is just happy to be there (though he probably really wanted Love to win... But alas capitalism triumphs all). I'd LOVE it if Nintendo finally wrote them some spicy dialogue instead of the bland and boring "eh gg" we've been getting for over a year. I'd LOVE the acknowledgement that Frye is incredibly unpopular and has gotten brutal loses. They did it in Splat1 and 2. I want my girl to go on a rampage or for Big Man to impose himself. But it's not that big of a deal. We ain't getting angst. Deep Cut is too busy sharing their one braincell to decide what meal they're gonna have to care.

This Splatfest went pretty well, I think! I had alot of fun, and I had way less mirror matches! I was worried that the teams weren't going to be very balanced, like alot of the previous splatfests, but things seemed pretty even this time!

I hope all the other teams had fun! It'll be SO GREAT if Team Frye wins, if Team Big man wins instead, that'll be good too! If Shiver wins... then... listen don't take your anger out on the Shiver fans let's all just be nice ok.

I also won a 100x battle for the very first time! ...While... listening to a Two Trucks mashup?? Life sure is mysterious isn't it. Also I thought for the longest time that little symbol that appears over people's names meant they were a "Top 100 player" so imagine my shock when I saw it over my own name...! Ah but then I looked it up, because, of course, there's no fucking way, and it turns out that it just means you won a 100x or 333x LMAO Would've been funny tho...

I lost my very last Tricolour match of the Splatfest pretty badly, which bummed me out. But. Then I was back in the city listening to Daybreaker Anthem. So, I already did listen to the song once before when it leaked, but oh my cod. You NEED to hear this song in game. Listening to this play while walking around the city after the battle is so healing. The vibes are IMMACULATE.

Splatoon can be a frustrating game sometimes, but at the end of the day, it is all, well, a game! Despite some gripes I have, I think Splatoon isvery special, I love the world of it so much, and it is so fun playing it alongside friends.

Just some (long) venting

So, lets start at the beginning a while ago (back in the last months of 2022 I think maybe?) I was streaming Splatoon when my capture card died. right in the middle of it. literally an hour before splatfest. It was just a cheap little $20 one, so it wasn’t that unexpected that it would die at one point, but it definitely chose one of the most inconvenient times for it. so, I started saving up muns to get it replaced- I had decided, to make sure it lasted longer this time, that I would get one of the big, expensive ones, because when it comes to tech the expensive shit tends to be more durable and last longer, and my BFF suggested the one she had gotten, so I started opening up even more different kinds of commissions. Since I didn’t have a job (I had put in an application at my brother’s work since I can’t drive and he can, but never got anything back) the only source of income I have is art coms. so now I had to save up for around $400 in computer stuff (capture card, computer monitor, new desk) which was. fine. made tons of adopts. not a single one sold. did get a massive amount of coms- that. where from a single person. and the amount of work drawing the exact same character was driving me insane, but it was fine. I also, as anyone following me probably knows, decided to stop work on my fandom stuff and focus entirely on the coms, despite very much NOT wanting to stop, as I was stuck on a Hyperfixation of that fandom. and then, a day or two (maybe three?) ago, I saw that the capture card was on sale, and I could probably get it. buying it while on sale would REALLY help me out on getting the rest of the stuff I needed. So then, I was twenty short, so my BFF swooped in like the angel (demon?) she is, and offered to help me out. so I got an art com for a new icon from her and had the muns for it! ...or so I thought. You see, my bank decided to lie to me about how much money I had, and I was around thirty short. so now I had to try and get more muns. Thankfully though, that same day, another friend (at least, I hope they think  we’re friends. their really cool...) decided to also help and commissioned me for a full-shaded pic of one of their characters, and I was able to order the capture card! ..aaand then that’s where the past three days (including today) BS comes in. I ended up getting a thought in my head- like, the usual one that ruins my thought process for a little bit and makse me scared as shit. but instead of going away somewhat easily with a simple distraction, it actually fucked me over kinda bad. my brain actually felt PHYSICALLY weird, and my breathing sped up. not hyperventalating, but it was definitely faster than normal. So I mentioned it in the vent channel of a discord server, and couple people said it sounded like a panic attack. so thats great.

My brain was still kinda messed up so my BFF offered to keep me company until it started to chill out, so we stayed up till 5 am watching vids together, and when she went to nap since she was tired, I was fine again, but I noticed that the new capture card was out for delivery, so knowing that I wouldn’t be able to wake up in time for it if I went to sleep like I was planning, I stayed up the rest of the night. and then, amazon sent an email about the ‘delivery being attempted and having to try again tommorrow’ apparently the doorbell went off according to my brother? but I didn’t hear it, even though I usually do. I was planning on waiting for it to be delivered so I could go out and get it once it was, but apparently it was one of those “you have to meet the person to get it” which Amazon did NOT mention (do they normally? idk its my first time ordering from them). So my countdown to getting the card was now just. pointless. I was angry AND sleep deprived, so I just. went to sleep cause I was too pissed (and tired) to do anything else. Cause me and said BFF from earlier were planning on testing the capture card out with some splatoon, which I was super excited to play with her again. buut we didn’t get to. so, cut to today. I wake up at 12 (pm I think?) its dark out, but I can’t get myself back to sleep so I just decide to give up and work on one of the sketches. and its just. super chill for a bit. got the tracker open in front of me while I doodle in the sketchbook, just waiting (according to it, the driver went in circles multiple times. no Idea if they were lost or not, but it was mildly amusing) and then, finally, I get my capture card. I realize that it probably won’t fit in like I thought it would, since its bigger than I thought, so I ask my brother to help, since he’s put together computers before. so we pop open the side of my computer and get it in. beeefore realizing something. it. doesn’t. fit. it fits in the computer casing perfectly fine. but the plugs for the motherboard are too small. and the ones on the card are too big. and just. the thing I spent months on. WAS FUCKING POINTLESS. so now, after looking at it, my brother states that we’ll have to make AN ENTIRELY NEW COMPUTER. Like, don’t get me wrong, I do kinda need some upgrades- this one has been giving me MASSIVE problems with Memory, and recently its been overheating and lagging BAD on minecraft of all things, so an upgrade would be nice. BUT NOT AN ENTIRELY NEW COMPUTER. I’VE ONLY HAD THIS DAMN THING FOR AT LEAST THREE YEARS

so obviously, this is going to be a shitload more expensive than what was already draining my sanity.

My brother offered that I could use the parts he had gotten from a friend, since I use the computer a lot more than he does, and he can play games just fine on the old one of mine I had given him, but like. those are for Him. and he DOES need a new computer- there IS a reason I don’t use the old one anymore. and just. I feel like shit now. He’s even offering to save up some money from his adopts to help out with it. and like. He’s the best brother I could ask for but also I feel like scum of the earth for having to rely on him so much. He’s said that he doesn’t mind handling the bills since he knew it would take me a long while to get a job and all, since I’ve never had one, but I still feel horrible for it. and I feel like I’m just mooching off of him and just. really fucking hate it. I’m just. tired of feeling useless. and being useless in general.

Any weapons they struggle to use and why? - chargers are a big one. She plays a lot of frontline weapons and because of that she's very used to quick, sharp turns. It can help her with 180s as a charger, but the patience and control required to snipe is something she just does not have.

Can they cook, and how do they prefer to? - yes but im not exactly sure what the second half of the question means

Any phobias? - yes and no. I once said that she has agoraphobia but im no longer sure if that's wholly accurate to her. But I can tell you what she's afraid of; sanitized octos, hijacked people, subway stations/tunnels, loss of control

How do they sleep? How much do they usually need to sleep? - She has random nightmares. They're not on any consistent basis, but they're always about Kamabo. Always about Tartar. Aside from the nightmares she sleeps decently well. She needs 7-9 hours of sleep but doesn't always get that. She can be functional on as little as 3 hours of sleep.

Favorite time of the year and why? - In Inkopolis, spring. She loves when the weather starts to warm up and it doesn't get as overwhelming hot as it does in summer. It's great. In Splatsville, winter. Deserts are too fucking hot

Are they prone to arguing? Or do they settle? - Kate is very conflict avoidant. She'll try to avoid an argument happening whenever she can, but if she gets into one she does not back down easily

Opinion on Splatfests; any that they've been a part of or remember fondly? Or bad memories even? - she's taken part in a lot of fests and most of them were great, except for two. The divide caused by Callie vs Marie was enormous and created a lot of tension between the cousins. Squid vs Octo though,, that one she hated on principle. A lot of octolings were coming to inkopolis and living peacefully among the inklings. The fest not only pointed out their differences in the artwork, but actively pitted them against each other. She considers it a blessing that people weren't fighting in the streets over this fest.

Any siblings? How is their relationship? - two, but they haven't talked in years.

Lore related things I hope we get some answers on in splatoon 3/ a splatoon 3 dlc or just in the future

- were all octolings in the world forced underground or was it just the ones in the area of the war (there’s some evidence supporting it’s the second one and I wanna make a more in-depth post on this later)

- who are the other two inklings shown to be part of the first squidbeak splatoon? What were they like I wanna know :( I wanna learn more about the og squidbeak in general, judd seems to have been a part of it and so much more history why can’t we learn about it from him?

- what’s the history of the calamari inkantation? Who/what made it, was the magical properties intended or on accident, are there other songs like it besides Octavio’s music?

- what are the other places in the world like? We know about calamari county but that’s it. I wanna see places like the Octarian cities you can see from some of the hero mode levels and what they’re like and how they differ from inkopolis, or the salmonid grounds where they live when they aren’t migrating. - one of the sunken scrolls says that inkling ink is actually disintegrated by airborne microbes. Is that like, a thing that could be dangerous? Are these microbes going to evolve sooner than later? Inklings are more ink than anything so the fact that this stuff is in the air might end up being deadly to them if they grow enough maybe?

The only real area in which I think Nintendo’s handling of news amidst covid has been lacking is that they’re dropping a lot of things just sorta out of nowhere, when I think even just a Tweet the day before or something to tell us what time to look out for would be easy enough and just sorta, good for consumers I guess. Much of the people that are just responding to every Nintendo Tweet with “direct when?” though or demanding news amidst a global fucking pandemic are whiny entitled cunts though.

So anyway, Mario’s 35, we got a couple of different things announced, and most of them were pretty cool, lots of the merch shit they announced specifically looks super sick, I honestly really want those Splatfest shirts, etc etc.

In terms of I guess bigger announcements, we’ve got Mario 35 - that Mario 99 fangame that Nintendo took down so they could “borrow” the idea for themselves. Kinda sus. But this is a different take on the concept at least, and it looks pretty fun. Really don’t get why it needs to be limited? But I’ll play it either way.

The Mario Kart thing looks like a fun novelty, it’s basically another Labo thing but with less construction and what looks to be at least a little bit more satisfying gameplay in the long term. 

I’m really happy 3D World’s coming to Switch, the last thing they need to do to kill the Wii U is figure out a way to bring Xenoblade X over. Despite being happy about it I still didn’t necessarily feel like I needed to buy it, I do have the Wii U game after all, but then they did that Bowser’s Fury tease? If it’s getting its own subtitle and logo then, who knows what that’s gonna be? The level looked a fair bit more open than many of the base game offerings so maybe we’re seeing the 3D World gameplay be challenged with a different formula of sorts, perhaps leaning more into the collectathon style of other 3D entries? I’m looking forward to it, and I’m glad it exists since it gives people who do have the game on Wii U a reason to buy it again for Switch.

And then the big main announcement to end things off was Super Mario 3D All Stars - 64, Sunshine and Galaxy packed into one game, releasing in like 2 weeks as well. I get paid like 3 days before that so I’m gonna buy it physically because yeah. I actually don’t own 64, I’ve literally never even played Sunshine, and uh, I do have Galaxy but having it on Switch with crisper visuals is still good.

Seems like “so long gay Bowser” has been replaced with the “buh-bye” line so we might be getting that BLJ-less version of 64 I forget the nickname of. Don’t know what they’ll do about pressure sensitivity on the shoulder buttons with FLUDD in Sunshine since Switch controllers all have digital shoulder buttons but I’ve got a GameCube controller anyway so who cares. I have to assume the Galaxy 2 exclusion was just to counter Galaxy burnout? Half the collection being Galaxy games might’ve seemed a bit weird, I suppose.

But yeah, looks cool, I’ll buy it, probably would be more hyped if we hadn’t had multiple leaks and rumours about this since very early in the year, but oh well.

One way in which I am a bit disappointed with this Direct though is that, most of the stuff here isn’t really new, a lot of these big announcements are more novelties, really. Again, global pandemic, I’m not out to condemn Nintendo because they’ve not got some huge world-shaking release to show off. But I think even just like, a teaser for a properly new Mario game, Odyssey 2 or Galaxy 3 or something completely original, maybe even the legendary Mario 65! That would’ve been really nice. Because as it looks right now, the 35th anniversary will be celebrated with stuff we already had before, but just a little bit different, or a little bit new, but I don’t think it’s wrong of me to want something a lot different, a lot new. You know?

SMG4 Review Ultima 2020 Pt. I

*Slam* The First Half of the year is officially over and by god, how much of a year it was. Needless to say, Fuck. But I wanted to celebrate making it this far by looking over one creator that has helped me keep going and that’s SMG4. His vids are still something else and today we’re doing a lightning round, no holds barred! Let’s do this...

Mario Gets His Pingas Stuck in the Door

Pretty great starter episode as last year. How they’re able to escalate things is pretty hilarious and like a door to the dingdong, it sticks the landing. (Grade: A)

Mario School Club

Ah, an episode where it’s about a group and they each get good segments. Shroomy’s club was my favorite and I enjoyed Mr. Monitor’s debut. It gets the same score. (Grade: A)

Bowser Loses Custody of his Children

This episode’s pretty straightforward. It has its jokes but it’s admittedly not a standout. Honestly, I was kinda believing we’d get an arc for this cuz I feel like this would’ve worked if Bowser didn’t get his kids back and we’d save getting them back at a later date.  (Grade: B-)

If Mario Was in the Sonic Movie

Eggman really stole the show with this and it was definitely better than the actual Sonic movie because I actually had more than a couple chuckles. Plus no shitty product placement. The romance element was especially a poignant turn because it made me love Swagmaster a lot more. Overall great to go back to when I want a good time. (Grade: A)

Mario’s Magical TV

Has its moments but they might as well have been one off shitposts on Twitter. Looking back, it’s an inferior episode to one later down the line and ends up being pretty meh. Also reminds me of Rick and Morty which did it better 3 times now. (Grade: C-)

Lord of the Memes

Ah, a Lord of the Rings parody. It’s a fun adventure that has some clever references, some pretty cinematic moments, and a great climax. Especially loved how they recreated smeagle’s arc and is great spin on their D&D episodes. (Grade: A)

Meggy’s Destiny

Still a good movie that works better emotionally than logically. Couple annoying moments but there are indeed great moments, especially in the 3rd act, that balances things out. Overall, it’s not as great as the anime arc, but it’s a fun bout that caps off that arc in a heartfelt way. (Grade: B+)

Mario Commits Tax Fraud

This was exceedingly one note. Barely got a laugh out of me beyond the climax and nothing’s really compelling me to enjoy thinking about this again. Might as well have played Yoshi in GTA 5 to get the same experience but better. (Grade: D+)

If Mario was in Animal Crossing

The ending is all that really mattered and it unfortunately shows how little Animal Crossing had in terms of worthwhile memes to utilize and even then, they really faceplanted with how forgettable this kinda was. Seriously, even the froggy chair gag was pitiful and predictable. (Grade: C-)

Mario Runs Out of Toilet Paper

Unexpected is what I’d call this. The second half raises the memes to a pretty great logical extreme and it’s surprising that this came from a real world annoyance. Really turned lemons into lemonade because fuck the hoarders. Those people made me side with Thanos for a while. (Grade: B+)

Mario’s Inside Story

Pretty fun adventure, but it kinda stinks that Saiko has little to really do anymore. Her chemistry with Luigi is good, but it would’ve made little difference to replace her with someone else. The story itself works well even with a predictable ending, but I just wish Saiko could do more. (Grade: B)

The E G G

This episode basically reused one of my most hated story tropes ever. “Oh no, they’re taking care of a baby but the baby won’t stay still and hijinks ensues.” This wasn’t good when Tom & Jerry did it, I certainly don’t like it here. And JubJub doesn’t make it better by being a blathering Boopkins echo fighter. That’s all he is and I’m with Mario where I wish he wasn’t around. Fuck this episode. (Grade: F)

Wario Tries to Stop Himself From Dying

A pretty great take on the ‘Wario Dies.mp3′ meme that reminds me so much of Happy Death Day. Huge step up from the previous entry and it’s a solid episode revolved around one of my favorite fat man. (Grade: B+)

Meggy Moves In

This is honestly an episode that just turns into a mess. There’s really only one good joke but other than that, it’s not charming or a laugh riot. It’s fine, just really bland. (Grade: C-)

Mario is Cancelled

I’d say it exhibits the basics of cancel culture well, but this is the most boring episode imaginable. Too much attempts at commentary not enough jokes. This almost felt like what a Karen would think SMG4 episodes are like. (Grade: D-)

The Totally Legit Learning Show with SMG4

This is Mario’s Magical TV but better. Every segment is either funny or charming as hell and it all just sticks to a more captivating lookback. (Grade: A)

Pretty casual and charming episode. Not a major laugh machine but I was consistently enjoying every moment. Bonus points for not giving JubJub a lot of screen time and making Rob the scarecrow a lovely character from start to finish. Kinda weird that they went with corn but it’s not a dealbreaker. Mario the Supreme Leader

A legit laugh riot from start to finish. Feels like a sequel to Smart Mario but taken to an equally great extreme. It’s great (Grade: A)

War on Beeg SMG4

Again, an episode where Saiko is apart of the ride but is mostly sidelined in terms of what to do. Otherwise, this is like the Toilet Paper episode where it’s unexpected and I really didn’t know where it was gonna go. Though this is a little better because a few moments stuck out to me more.  (Grade: A-)

Officer Meggy

Meggy is cute as a cop and Mr. Monitor is utilized better here than his other appearances. The story’s alright and is a pretty charming next step for Meggy after the Splatfest adventure. (Grade: B+)

Mario vs. Siren Head

A delightfully devilish take on the horror figure. It’s kind of a copy from the Sonic Movie episode but still a nice episode centered around Siren Head, with a pretty great ending to cap. (Grade: B+)

The Demon Among Us

Pretty mid in terms of story and comedy. I figured they would make an episode about Shroomy’s carnage side and I wonder if this’ll become an eventual arc but I doubt it. Found it pretty meh more than anything. (Grade: C)

Mario's Spicy Day 🔥

Not a major fan of SMG3′s voice, but I didn’t mind this episode. Heck, it hardly involves Mario so the title’s a little misleading. Not a lot to say with it, though, has its jokes and a nice emotional moment but other than that, it’s pretty mid.  (Grade: B-)

SSENMODNAR Reddit Special

Hit and miss, but mostly hit. The JOJO and Teletubbie skits were the greatest, but I feel some just felt like lazy answers. Overall, some good fun but I’d be fine if it was fanwork specials like the previous ones.  (Grade: B-)

Off the Hook

(copied from my Twitter thread here) So, yea! @SplatoonNA 2 has ended its run of content! A solid two year run! At this point it's possible I've played it as much as I played the original game, maybe even a bit more. But compared to a lot of people I've known since it's release, I'm definitely more of a casual fan. It's a fun game oozing with aesthetic and has one of the most solid gameplay foundations I've ever seen -- EVERYTHING about the game's mechanics culminates into a multi-layered experience where single, co-op, AND versus are designed to facilitate fresh shooting gameplay. EVERY single second of playing Splatoon multiplayer entails making choices. The story/Octo exp. have so many great level designs. Multiplayer and its ranked modes require different strategies. Salmon Run is THE most hardcore co-op I've ever seen. It's such wonderful game design. With that being said, now that #FInalFest #Splatpocalypse is over and the 2nd #Splatfest cycle has come to a close, I want to talk a bit about the single most important aspect that has impacted my life regarding the game: #OfftheHook

Rewind back to when these two were first introduced: I was unconvinced that I would enjoy or care about them as much as the Squid Sisters (who are actually, like, cousins? I think? nvmd) But two years later and these two warm my heart in a way VERY few fictional duos do. What's most interesting to me about this is that while there IS a decent amount of in-game banter between the pair over the course of the past two years, they have SO MUCH less actual character development/narrative than other couples (they are a couple don't at me)

Honestly, a lot of my affection for them has grown from the way the in-game presentation leaves enough context for us to read inbetween the lines regarding how well they know each other, how much they care about each other, how much they respect each other despite competitions. Seeing their interactions both before and after the #FinalFest, brief as they were, really solidified how these two VERY opposite personalities have had a positive influence on each other, even if we haven't necessarily witnessed it firsthand. I think this is part of what makes them so valuable in the mainstream (?) media -- they are a power couple who is ALREADY happy, proud, living their best lives for and with one another. In the current climate of the world, that's inspiring to see, whether you're 15 or 33. We still don't know much on the details of their backstories but we definitely know that Marine comes from a very bad place and Hime comes from a very privileged one, and their relationship seems to have helped them both grow into better people. Everything about their designs, their personalities, their CONCEPT as a BAND and how they function/perform their roles within it, everything about them embraces that sort of "opposites attract" aesthetic and I am all about it. While Callie and Marie are cute and great and I like them, I ADORE Pearl and Marina, because they went the extra mile to not only flesh them out as characters but ensure everything about their presentations, personalities, etc. embraces that "opposites attract" concept. 'well cool that's great and inspiring but yea lots of things do this so whatevs' Yea, you're right, but lots of media do not do this while also basing their entire core visual, gameplay, audio design SPECIFICALLY AROUND two sides battling against each other. EVERYTHING about Splatoon is about ___ vs ___ From the hosts welcoming you when you boot up the game, to the different modes you play, to the way everything is presented, to the AUDIO stylings of Off the Hook, to the core concept of the Splatfests themselves. And at the end of the day, it is fucking NICE to see the end result of ALL OF THIS ___ vs ___ be embodied by two characters who represent that who LOVE EACH OTHER no matter what and who make each other better because of those differences and not despite them. Yea, the Squid Sisters did this but to such a simpler, more surface level degree. They were the beta. Off the Hook is the fully realized version of it. If you don't believe me just LISTEN to Squid Sister songs versus Off the Hook. LOOK at the character designs. Read the dialogue. The fact that Off the Hook has hosted actual real life concerts - IN THE REAL WORLD - isn't just some indication of "people be horny for pop idols" (I mean that IS a thing, separate discussion I ain't educated enough on to get into), it's because they KNOW they have a good thing

Splatoon isn't just for kids, it's also for adults who are nostalgic for the aesthetic of BEING a kid, and the fact that Hime (20) and Marine (18) are young adults -- INBETWEEN kids and adults -- cannot be a fucking mistake, either. Anyway, this is all to say, I am so impressed in a way I rarely am in that the Squid Research Lab was able to take the mechanical design philosophy of Splatoon 1 and EXPAND upon it, fucking OWN IT 100%, make sure that everything about Splatoon 2 embodied the concept. Green versus Pink, Pink versus Blue, Gold versus Silver, Ketchup versus Mayo, Chaos versus Order, we can have fun arguing over the most mundane preferences or the most basic, broad-sweeping aspects of existence, but at the end of the day we CAN be better for it. We CAN be made better, we CAN grow, not despite those differences but BECAUSE we hash them out, because we argue, make our cases, see the other side's passion, etc etc. It's my favorite message/theme any piece of media can discuss and Splatoon 2 causes such an emotional reaction from me because the CRAFT of it is so passionately detailed and embraces this theme in every. fucking. layer. of itself. So yea, #Pearlina is a goddessdamn inspiration to me that I will probably carry with me for a very long time, and Splatoon as a franchise is so fucking impressive for how young it is. I hope the years to come incite as much warm fuzzies as other long-time Nintendo series have. The fact that the final artwork we got shows the pair swapping the iconic components of their attire -- their headgear -- is just such a beautiful and fitting sendoff that wraps a lovely bow on the whole thing. As far as I'm concerned, they are now engaged, will happily wed.

So ya’ll need to be more excited for other games

Panzer Dragoon is a cult classic that goes for over $120 for a complete working copy. A remake with better graphics and controls is an amazing way to bring this series back. It’s been dead since the xbox.

Want a fun chill time till then? Play Dragon Quest 11 when it comes out on the switch. Stop complaining over “anime sword boys” in smash when this series has been big for Nintendo since the days of the snes. Shit we wouldn’t have final fantasy without it. It’s a great game that even has a baby mode for people who don’t like to grind levels. It’s funny and you’re gonna spend at least 40-80 hours on it depending on if you finish the post game story (pst, finish the post game story it’s the real story)

We could of used at least a mention of Bayonetta 3, or a trailer for that Persona 5 spin off game we’re getting. Knowing Metroid is being fully reworked makes sense why we didn’t get it. Also legit surprised of no mention for a Splatoon 3 in the works since the final splatfest for 2 is next month.

But for real stop acting like spoiled children for either not getting what you want, or being so hyper focused on 1 single game that you call the rest of the direct boring. Nintendo just handed us the most entertaining E3 direct game wise in years.

OK AND THEIR THOUGHT ON SPLATFEST: (I WROTE TOO MUCH IM SO FUCKING SORRY)

buggy: he’s been going to every splatfest ever since he was a kid and had to be held up by his parents in the crowd, he’s always seen them as great times where the entire community gets together and has fun all day and night. he doesn’t really get too competitive, he’s in it to have fun. he dreams of performing at a splatfest and even holding a splatfest with jon! it might be a while till he reaches that point in fame, though, since pearl and marina are still a big thing. (he’s a big fan)

skuggy: he’s only been on the surface for three of them (orange juice, inkling vs octo, and fork vs spoon) and he thinks they’re kinda silly but pretty fun. oh god, it tends to be absolute hell in the square at night though, with all the neon lights and the LOUD ass noise-- he prefers to be more dark and quiet at night, especially since he’s been in the underground for so long, but he can’t complain. he gets competitive in turf but won’t complain if his team loses (UNLESS IT WAS MOST POPULAR GDI). he goes to the shows with his bf because he likes them and he’ll live

gene: oh, theyre a great time! he doesn’t go to too many of the shows but he finds it fun to participate in the battles! he and oz like picking different teams and seeing who wins. gene is usually seen watching over the concerts and battles ready with a first aid kit, since sometimes they tend to get a bit rowdy--especially since so many people tend to get competitive and go overboard sometimes. he enjoys seeing the square at night, seeing how lively and colorful it is. he also rlly likes how octolings can be part of the fun too. he likes off the hook’s shows the best and if he goes to one he’ll be yelling “I LOVE YOU MARINAAAAAA”

oz: BEST PARTS OF THE MONTH he’s been stanning since cats vs dogs. he gets playfully competitive-- yknow, reasonably competitive. he doesn’t get down if his team wins because he thinks they both did great! he can be seen in the plaza during shows covered in glowsticks and handing them out with gene on his shoulders. ever since the Incident he can’t participate in the turf wars as much as he’d like to, but he still picks a side and watches the shows. he is an avid fan of both the squid sisters and off the hook

farrow: ok jesus fuck this guy will crush skulls to push his team to the win. jesus christ you don’t want to be in a battle with him during splatfest he’s highly competitive. he’s the kinda guy who picks one team (example: fork) (usually based off the idol behind it example: pearl) and call the opposing team “spoon scum” or “YALL SPOON DEGENERATES” (in a joking way but STILL hes THAT guy.) also he called the squid vs octo fest a race war (but picked octo anyways to support vincent ALSO FUCK YEA U GET TO BE AN OCTO) he loves the shows and will scream. seen waving glowsticks violently and hollering on top of vincent’s shoulders.

rascal: oh god. splatfests are scary. people get too angery at these times. he prefers to watch the shows and watch the battles in the sidelines. he plays too sometimes but tries not to in order to avoid the heatedness of it. he loves marina and will pick her side from now on in the hopes of her getting a win. he is seen at splatfest singing along to the songs perched on a fuckin streetlight or something because the crowd tends to trample him. he’s a pretty chill dude over the fests and picked octo because he was scared of sounding speciesist but also thinks theyre too cool 

mendel: back when he was an innocent octo free from sanitization he used to sit by the grates during splatfest ( a lot of octolings did, including skuggy as well ) and hear everyone cheering and singing. he sat by them as he wrote down his notes and bob his head to the music. he didn’t know what exactly what was going on, he just guessed it was a special monthly concert. if he couldve reached the surface he most definitely would have joined teams and fought in battles, wouldnt be too competitive or bummed when he lost but he would have sniped like 20 people to get a win lol

tl’dr: Splatfest good and noisey fun
