Single layers (and no shoes) represent Ed's emotional vulnerability/openness and self reflection.

It's a common symbolism device to either have characters put on tons of layers when they are feeling vulnerable (Dean Winchester I'm looking at you) or go down to single layer when they are opening up. Ed's clothing is no exception.

Season One

The first time we see Ed in single layers is when he switches clothes with Stede. While during this whole episode, Ed is opening up, he makes altering life decisions while in Stede's outfit. First, the whole scene in the crow's nest where he takes seriously Stede's proposal to continue learning about each other's lives, and second when he lies to Izzy about planning to kill Stede.

I think the choice of black and white, the classic good and bad trope, can be read into as well. Stede is in the black leathers of Blackbeard with lighter color jewelry around his neck, showing the heaviness of the Blackbeard role and crew, while Ed is wearing a white shirt with a black cravat, showing Stede's way of piracy giving him hope while having a bit of Blackbeard's heaviness still there.

In 1x7, This is Happening, Ed goes down to one layer — the t-shirt.) Ed drops his jacket and goes down to a single layer right before Lucius rips into him about Stede's feelings for him and he stays down in these layers as they eat the snake.

Ed's emotions are bare, at the forefront. He is not only realizing Stede's feelings for him, but also letting his feelings come out.

And his shirt is purple — symbolizing Ed's love for Stede. (Sidenote: I love that blue is Stede's color and red is Ed's and they combine for a beautiful purple throughout the show.)

Both Ed and Stede are in single layers the first time they kiss. Ed confesses his love (what makes Ed happy is you) while they sit next to each other on the beach. Both of them are vulnerable, open, especially Ed. They are both terrified, figuring themselves and each other out.

Ed continues to be in single layers as he sits on the dock waiting for Stede. The color theme of purple is once again used to represent Ed's emotional state.

The infamous breakup robe. While Ed has gone back to the Revenge, trying to be just Ed, back to the crew that allowed him to be himself (all but one person that is), he stays in the breakup robe, sans shirt, most of the time.

Until he has to put the mask and persona of Blackbeard back on, he is open, and emotional in front of Lucius and then the crew.

He is also shoeless during most of these scenes. While Ed being shoeless is more prevalent in season two, I think it ties into a deeper level of self reflection.

Season Two

Ed is down to only a black shirt and pants in the grav(e)y basket.

This time the t-shirt is black — symbolizing Ed's dark headspace. But once again, it's all about his emotions and Ed really feeling them. He is self-reflecting, looking into himself and realizing what he wants in life, what he thinks of himself, and finally deciding that ultimately, he wants to live.

There is the moment in Purgatory where Ed makes a shoe and puts it on, symbolizing one foot in the grave. But by the time Ed climbs to the cliff edge, he is back down to no shoes. This symbolizes two things: 1) he is no longer one foot in the grave (foreshadowing) 2) that he is about to do more self reflecting.

The combination of one-layer and no shoes is when Ed is most open emotionally. He now realizes his own feelings about himself, and when he hits the water, he decides to fight to live. Yes, mer!Stede is part of it, his love for Stede cannot be hidden, it is out in the open, the shining beacon of light and hope.

I've talked about it before but the editing of the MerStede scene is amazing. The last shot in the water as Ed sinks down is Ed in all black, surrounded by dark waters, his feet the most prominent in the shot. This cuts immediately to Stede's feet wading into the holds water, joining Ed in both worlds.

In all of 2x5, Ed is in the rice sack (and I'd be remiss not to mention the cat collar and bell.) He starts out wearing sandals: during the talks with the crew, Stede, the door, and Lucius. While Ed is trying to make up for everything, he is not fully committed emotionally to everything.

Not until two things happen: Lucius pushes him overboard into the water — the symbolism of water as rebirth, understanding, growth is very loud this season — and in the process knocks his shoes off. While it is a comedic beat and parallel to Lucius's shoes coming off when he pushes him overboard it has a deeper meaning.

Ed fully lets himself feel and tap into his emotions — sit with himself if you will — once he talks with Fang. He learns that something he did in the past that he thought was fun was actually hurtful to the other person. He genuinely apologizes for that (the opposite of the corporate apology from earlier.)

He then continues that openness and vulnerability with Stede on the deck. Telling Stede exactly what he needs — to take it slow — and knowing that Stede won't do the exact opposite (what happened constantly last season with a certain character cause they thought it was "best") but he knows Stede will listen to and respect him. This moment shows how Ed is not only legit apologizing and realizing his actions, but letting himself be open and vulnerable again.

The last scene I want to point out is the moment before and morning after they sleep together.

The last shot we see of them that night, Ed sits on the bed, his hair down, his jacket off — down to one layer — as he looks lovingly to Stede. We can read many emotions on his face as the two of them are surrounded by all of the colors that we know to represent the couple — yellow, red, and purple.

In a parallel to the night before, the next morning Stede is shirtless but covered from the waist down, while Ed is covered. He is wearing Stede's robe, wrapped in one layer of comfort. The outer layer is blue — both Stede's color and the color of the ocean (there's that rebirth and change symbolism again) — with purple inner lining.

Both of these moments contain physical, mental, and emotional vulnerability for Ed. Ed has never been shy about explaining himself, but he is now starting to understand himself and process these emotions.

When Ed is in single layers and no shoes, it is when he is at his most vulnerable, gets to feel and express his emotions the most.

When he's Ed.

I may have missed some moments but these are the ones that stuck out to me the most. I also didn't dive into Stede here, but that could be a whole other essay.

cannot stop thinking about ed's androgyny in s2. (meta incoming in uh, not the best english I'm sorry 😅)

he essentially is a bearded queen. But bearded (drag) queens usually play with this stark feminine/masculine contrasts. ed on the other hand manages to incorporate these markers - beard, leathers, deep voice/mumbling, makeup, hairdo, jewelry - so seamlessly, they are no contrasts here. they have this beautiful, natural interplay.

and then: how the series plays with tropes usually associated with teenage girls 👌

like in s1, it's all about ed finding himself through his love for stede. visually this is conveyed through him becoming more feminine (no beard but still long hair, the silk robe). usually, characters become more feminine presenting in makeover scenarios. this here is the opposite, showing masculinity as a performance (blackbeard) and ed's femininity as, like, his natural, authentic state. It's incredibly rare to see the trope subverted like this.

and then s2, the first episodes, when they play with tropes usually associated with teen girls, e. g. the smudged mascara/crying in their room/playing around with cute things (the cake toppers)/giving regina george realness (but with more physical violence haha :')/dreaming up girly things (mermen). the costume/makeup emphasizes this vibe, and it's partly played as a joke, making ed's pain feel a little bit lighter, a bit more like a phase. but it's not completely played for laughs (thank god).

the use of these tropes also makes ed more relatable, a bit more grounded in the reality we live in. moreover, his pain is always taken seriously by the show in the end, which, for me at least, indirectly acknowledges the reality and depth of experiencing (the pain of) girlhood.

the pain of girlhood: with the kraken, ed doesn't go all the way back to looking like blackbeard. he doesn't lose his new found feminity, on the contrary. it's possible to read this as a desperate form of vulnerability. that he is just not willing (and not able) to hide his pain anymore but, well, make it everyone's problem.

finally what I really love about ed's femininity is that it's just not tied to stede. it's all his. he found it through stede but it becomes something through which he expresses himself, not only his love but also his pain. and this makes me as an enby person so, so happy.

this is one reason why I relate to ed so much. once you find that part of yourself you don't want to hide it anymore, it's an integral truth, it feels natural. that's also why I'm beginning to headcanon ed as enby. it just would fit them so well.

There’s been a lot of talk in the fandom lately about this desire to downplay Ed’s atrocities in the first season. As others have discussed, this seems to largely be in an attempt to a) reach a kind of distilled wholesomeness for BlackBonnet that, for all the actual cuteness attached to the ship, doesn’t truly exist when you’re talking about the romance between two deadly pirates, and b) position Izzy as the sole bad guy so that Option A can flourish and/or simply because some fans don’t like him and yay demonizing the characters we’re not fond of. Great stuff, love all that I’ve read. To add onto the conversation just a bit, I think it’s worth emphasizing Izzy’s line in the finale:

“Blackbeard is himself again.”

With the giant caveat that I don’t believe Izzy wanted the Kraken—AKA this level of violence and deadly unpredictability. I mean, Izzy is the guy who was begging Ed for a plan, some measure of stability to stay safe, so he really doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who’d want to live on a ship where his captain will randomly enter his cabin to cut off toes, his masochistic tendencies aside—but this line is a crystal-clear acknowledgement that the original Blackbeard was at least somewhat like the Kraken is now. What characteristics do we see then?

A sudden and unprompted murder (Lucius)

Potentially circumventing the moral dilemma of that murder via a technicality (I didn’t kill Lucius, the sea did)

A maiming (something Ed has admitted to enjoying and he’s done this specific act of violence in the past)

Rejecting emotional expression (“Stop crying.”)

Downplaying the suffering of others (“It’s just the pinky.”)

Engaging in threats to keep others in line (“Threaten me again, ever… I’ll feed you the rest, understand?”)

Expecting the crew to serve their captain regardless of what they’re struggling with (Who cares if you lost a toe, Izzy, come find me ASAP)

Making good use of others before tossing them aside (the crew will get rid of Stede’s “old dross” and then he’ll maroon them)

The implication that if things don’t occur in what he considers a timely manner, more punishment will follow (“Quickly now! … Quicker! Quicker!”)

Kidnapping (Jim + threatening Frenchie)

Working under the belief that if he can’t be happy, no one else can either (let’s separate the other couples by killing Lucius and keeping Jim on board).

Basically, I’ve seen a lot of posts that engage with the potential nuances of Ed’s past, questioning how bad it really was, and usually ending up on the side of absolving him via headcanons. Maybe he didn’t really set a ship of people on fire, Calico Jack did that and Ed was just passively involved. Do we know that his subordinate actually skinned that guy with a snail fork, or was it just an order given in a fit of fury that Ed later pulled back from? Did he really maim people, or is that just a random example to reflect the violent life he wants to leave behind? And beyond the fact that I think it’s bad analysis to read so much of Ed’s actions as intrinsically up for debate when the narrative itself never draws them into question… yes, Ed maims someone right on screen. We watch him do that and Izzy’s response is, ‘Ah, Ed’s finally back to normal!’

It may well be a slightly more extreme version of normal, but the Kraken didn’t come out of nowhere.

The argument that Ed was healing until Izzy manipulated him into becoming a monster not only ignores Ed’s personal agency—getting yelled at by a co-working in a way they know will hurt you, while horrible, isn’t justification for assault and murder—but also that follow-up of, “Blackbeard is himself again.” Izzy can’t force Ed to become something he’s not if Izzy’s entire purpose here is to bring back who Ed previously was. He’s trying to restore a past behavior, not conjure up a new one that’s the antithesis to Ed’s robe-wearing personality. Even when he was at his happiest with Stede, Ed still gave the snail fork order, threatened the Frenchman for “oomph,” explained casually how to take a ship in a raid (that is, kill everyone on board), was prepared to shoot up a dining room after a bunch of assholes laughed at him, was romanced by Stede letting them burn alive, and his idea of pirate fun is getting whipped in the balls/having animals fight to the death. Ed is a violent person! Because of course he is. He’s a pirate. Izzy isn’t some mastermind who molded Ed until he was a shadow of his former, passivist self, Izzy threw one (1) temper tantrum, found a particularly cruel button to push—“pining for his boyfriend”—and that’s all it took for Ed to choke him out against the wall. “There he is.” Blackbeard was always there, right beneath the surface, a tiny nudge away, and if you go on that kind of murder spree from one cruel remark then, sorry, but those tendencies were never truly being dealt with in the first place. Blackbeard (and to an extent the Kraken) have always been here. They never left. They’re Ed. Izzy didn’t create them and as much as I love fluffy, wholesome, tooth-rottingly sweet BlackBonnet content in a fandom space, pretending that they’re canonically #PureBabies is a serious misreading of the text. To say nothing of a dismissal of one of OFMD’s biggest themes. Stede arrives wanting to change pirating’s “culture of abuse,” even while he romanticizes it.

Who do we think represents that culture and its romanticism best, if not the feared pirate legend Stede falls in love with?

went so hard on the spider/witch motif on this one. and again i made it similar to grim's

since technically it was the ghosts who gave them the outfit, i imagined that it would be cobweb-based because they said they just took stuff around the dorm to make the outfits (???)

(also i imagined during halloween 2 malleus was like "i think your halloween outfits would be better in green" so that's why grim's ribbon went from purple to green like that one scene in sleeping beauty with the fairies)

Already know I want that robe Ed has! Dude it’s beautiful and I love the blue

Ed getting the breakfast ready is the cutest thing ever

Also Ed’s little hum as he’s going down the stairs is precious

Aww Stede being so sweet about the twine on the tray when Ed is so nervous about it (you can hear it in his shudder breath when he says he panicked) (Taika why are you so good at making me feel emotions lol)

Still dying about Izzy coming in while they are in dead and his fucking smirk and AGH And Ed is just like, yep saw that coming

Ed’s so nervous for Stede like Stede was for Ed

So Ed’s soft look (outside) was him looking at the fish basket and thinking of a simpler life…so at this point he was already thinking about leaving and Stede and stuff? Expecially after the convo with Izzy? Cause his eyes get really sad.

I still don’t know how to process the fight with Zheng…just that I agree that he was double upset about loosing his found family

I know the little moment of Stede saying “you don’t sound that happy” hurt me cause Ed’s face is like nope and flashbacks to “what makes Ed happy is you” OOF

But, I don’t think it was a full breakup…but it was a discussion that was bound to happen at some point and I’m proud of Ed for explaining he and Stede went over the boundaries he tried to set, for realizing he wasn’t ready for this relationship yet and that he doesn’t know what he is……And that Stede was open to their relationship being “whatever” until Ed is ready

But god I’m still upset about his word choice and it’s been almost 24 hours since this episode dropped “last night was a mistake” still hurts very bad cause like I said…pipeline in Stede’s head to “I was a mistake”

I think it was an alright conversation until Ed said he was leaving (leaving Stede first so he doesn’t get hurt which is what I expected in s1 but figured would happen this season…tho not like this and this close to the season finale…yikes)

And Stede’s reaction about the fish, damn Ed was so proud of that fish…but my two cents, he wasn’t being malicious I think he was just saying one fish does not make one a fisherman

Oh but the “fishermen and pirates are nothing alike like” damn

Steak Knife is lovely

I think laughing at the guy was part drunk Stede and also him covering up the pain of his other kill…idk how to explain

Also we can still hear the ROP screams and stuff during the first part of the credits

Once again, love freaking fang and that roach made mud baths a thing

So yeah, rewatching this episode…it was alright and then got painful toward the middle and definitely second hand embarrassment worthy at the end but I thought it was a decent episode. Of course it had pacing issues but that’s MAX’s fault, not David’s

ok so i’ve been watching this whole ed + anger discourse play out and??? it really feels like some of these people don’t know what anger looks like? or what it even is??? like yes, there is often a different kind of hurt at the source of anger, but that doesn’t mean the anger isn’t there? emotions? can coexist???

it’s very weird to me how people seem to think that if someone isn’t yelling or breaking things, they can’t be angry. you can be angry AND cold and calculated. and just bc ed has expressed anger loudly before doesn’t mean it won’t ever present differently? truly some wild takes being bandied about (esp about ep10 good golly)

anyway, i’m just a casual observer of the ofmd fandom, but i really appreciate the thought and care you put in to topics such as these, and i hope you’re taking care of yourself amidst all this drama.

yeah i don't understand the take that's like "ed expresses anger by YELLING" based off the assumption that just because we saw him yell once. again, it feels really childish? people will express anger in different ways in different situations with different degrees of how angry they are. like viewing ed as not being angry because he's not yelling is wild to me because i swear the quieter be gets the more pissed off he is. like i feel like the scene where he's choking izzy is arguably maybe the scene where he's at his most furious. i also think it's the best acted scene in the entire series tbh because of how good taika and con's expression work is. it really feels like a whole new level for taika especially acting wise like you can see the face journey he goes on. then the way his character shifts completely with just a change in body posture like i swear man fully switched genders there where suddenly he's in that pink robe and looks really fucking masc when izzy's yelling at him? OBSESSED.

but yeah i don't get the way people talk about ed like he can only feel fear or anger or happiness one at a time. especially when people focus on how he's not angry he's afraid and it's like? yeah, he is afraid! and that makes him angry! you can't be afraid as a pirate, fear isn't an emotion that gets you places, but anger? anger gets the job done.

but fr do people think someone gets one way of expressing anger their entire life and never changes? like personally, i never yell when i'm angry. i'll rant to my friends about things, but not really the same thing. i think the only time my gf saw me yell was like?? once???? under very specific circumstances. if i'm angry sometimes i'll make jokes! sometimes i'll argue with the person! if i'm mad enough i literally shake and get real quiet. most of the time if i get pissed enough i literally go take a nap like a fucking child.

people express things differently in different contexts. especially when it comes to how one expresses anger to a stranger vs a friend or colleague. anyways i love ed i want to wife him

Endearing things about Sim!Ed and Sim!Stede that keep making me smile, in no particular order:

This is Sim!Stede. (It took me a while to find suitably slutty shirts for him.) Who is he looking at like that?

Sim!Ed of course. They have been sitting there (the bar in their open space kitchen/living room) for a while, completely absorbed in chatting each other up in the cute simlish gibberish language. You can just sit one of them down somewhere and the other is going to join and talk to him for hours. They will ignore anything else.

- In a hilarious parallel to canon, after Ed confessed his crush to Stede and told him he's into guys in general and into Stede specifically, Stede went on a while like "this is my best friend Ed who's great" (they were already best friends at that time). Sim!Ed was sitting there making heart eyes across the breakfast table (because OMG they were roommates) and Sim!Stede was like "gotta tell my best friend Ed how much I like spending time with him and talking about hobbies!" 😂

Then Stede caught on, and decided to make up for the delay by being very into the wooing bit. Like, he'd get up, and immediately think of wanting to kiss Ed. No thoughts, only Ed.

- He's not alone there, Ed is equally Stede-focused. I had them spend a date at a local park early on. They had barbecue, then wandered around. Stop to chat with each other. Some random female NPC walks by. Takes one look at Sim!Ed and apparently decides he's her new crush (not blaming her, he's adorable, probably irresistible if you are another little virtual person), so she stops and starts hitting on him. Unfortunately for her, Sim!Ed is a) gay and b) currently busy staring at Sim!Stede, who just offered him a rose. Sim!Ed has little hearts floating around his little head and only eyes for Stede. He doesn't even notice the NPC trying to hit on him. Sim!Stede notices her, but instead of saying anything to her takes Sim!Ed by the waist and dips him in a kiss. NPC girl throws a fit and stalks off. Sim!Ed has failed to notice anything about that. He still has hearts floating around his pretty little head, and absolutely zero thoughts inside it. 💖

- It took like what felt a ridiculously short time until they were both completely obsessed with each other. One of them is doing something, no matter what it is, and chances are he will randomly think of the other one and how much he needs to flirt or just hang out with him. They see each other and bam, their mood goes right to either very happy or directly to flirty.

At this point they frequently just stop in the middle of an activity if the other happens to walk by. Yesterday Stede was supposed to make pancakes for breakfast. He got up before Ed (he usually does), so I figured that means he's in charge of breakfast, so I sent him to make pancakes. He got out a little bowl and mixed the batter. The next step would have been taking that to the stove and getting a pan to make the actual pancakes in. But, alas, Ed got up, and wandered by the kitchen on his way to the bathroom, in a purple robe and fluffy socks, looking really soft and cute, and Stede forgot about the pancakes entirely. They made out and chatted for half an hour, and I was sitting there like "Stede, your pancakes! And Ed really needs to pee!" 😂

- They also have really cute little character quirks I didn't set or expect to be there in the game at all. Stede has a bookworm trait, so his love of reading is understandable. But he's also obsessed with his phone (kinda more than with books, tbh). It's the only thing that can mildly distract him away from his one-track-Ed-focus mindset. He gets that thing out mid-conversation. He doesn't stop talking to Ed, he just also scrolls his phone. (Ed also has a phone, but he only opens it when nothing else is going on.)

- Ed is a napper. Stede sleeps and naps when he has low energy, which is reasonable. Ed just likes naps? He doesn't even need to be tired. It's like he sees a vaguely suitable piece of furniture, asks "is anyone sleeping on that?" and doesn't wait for an answer. If you wonder where Ed is, chances are he'll be having a nap. In the bed in the middle of the day. On the small living room/library loveseat by the fireplace. On the. Park bench in the public area that borders their garden? Ed, you have so many nice napping spots at home!

He slept on all the couches in the house, on either side of the bed, on the pool loungers, on a random bench in the public area that borders his and Stede's garden... He's just a sleepy little guy.🥹 (Sometimes I just watch him for a while. It's so cute. Very peaceful. Blorbo simulator is going great, guys, I get to watch them be happy!)

- Ed loves bubble baths. When I first got them into their (then) little house, I got them both a shower and a tub. I sent them both to try out the bath and shower. So they know they have options. (Do you need to do that? Probably not, but I do it like that.) But when deciding to go wash up on their own, Stede takes a shower and is done with it. Ed only showers when told to. Ed has tried the bathtub once and fell in love with it. (I was actually a little bummed that Stede doesn't do that, because in my head canon!Ed and Stede are a bathtub queen for bathtub queen couple, but I'm not going to take away Sim!Stede's shower if he prefers that, who am I, an evil god?)

- Stede cheats at chess. Ed overall seems to like the chess set better, he plays with it by himself, too. Stede only plays video games unprompted lol. He plays chess with Ed when Ed invites him to. And then he distracts Ed by pointing at something behind him and when Ed turns to look he rearranges the pieces.

Ed, sweetie, don't look so confused, you are losing because your boyfriend is cheating!

Also I think that particular game of chess was foreplay for them. They were sitting there at the table, doing 90% flirty conversation and 10% chess playing. And immediately, unprompted, decided to fuck after. (I don't even know who won the game or if they completed it.)

I suppose the game went well enough? They don't look unhappy about the outcome. 😉

I'm going to say things bc that's how I cope.

As a person who thinks that if you're going to do something you should do it right, I can't help it, it bothered me how sloppy this season felt. Of course I fully blame HBO and their cheapness, but it stills bothers me. Not only we got two episodes less than s1, but the 8 we got were shorter, and you can tell. I also blame the budget cuts for the constant yet unnecessary flashbacks, and the weird editing, and the anticlimatic pace. In any case, I want to highlight the things I did like, because I fucking love this show and Im sure that after a rewatch or two I'll be less angry, so let's stay positive:

Since it seems they were having trouble to get the complete cast together in one plot, I do love they kinda let them have their spotlight one by one. Like, Frenchie in the first episodes, Wee John as Calypso, Lucius with his PTSD in ep5... It's not the same as s1, but it's something.

I've seen people complaining about this, but Im happy they didnt invest too much time on the forgiving process. I like it better when everyone gets along fine, and in the end they're pirates and they never seemed to be the kind of people who hold grudges, so yeah lets skip to the nice part.

I did like a lot what they did with Izzy. I don't care if it happened too quick or what, I used to feel indiference towards him and this season I actually enjoy his scenes a lot. I still dont know how I feel about his death tho. It bothered me a little that the whole scene was more about Ed than Izzy himself, but in the end I always saw Izzy as a narrative tool in Ed's arc more than as a character of his own, so I guess it makes sense.

Super happy with the music choices, and also the new outfits.

Really, the first five episodes were absolutely brilliant.

It made me so happy they got Bronson Pinchot as Ned Low.

Huge fan of Zheng Yi Sao and Auntie.

Im so fucking furious at Taika Waititi for his pro-Israel shit that seeing Pop Pop attacking him gave me some sort of inner peace.

Now, things I wished had been done differently: - There were a lot of paralelisms with s1, which is good, but I'd like they brought back more actual elements of s1 into play. Like, the lighthouse painting, the secret wardrobe, the pink robe, a third Badmington (he would have work better as big bad than this prince ricky guy I dont really care about?). Frenchie singing again. This oneis a reach, but I would love to have Mary Bonnet back. And I was really hoping they play with the fact that Stede is "dead". The guy doesnt even mention the Master Fuckery from ep10.

-On that note, I was a little dissapointed on Jim's arc. I was never that invested on them or their plot in s1, but it feels weird how this season it seems like none of that even happened. Even Jim felt like a different character. I feel it would worked better if some of the conflict was related to Siete Gallos stuff, so at least it would feel all of that subplot wasnt a waste of time.

-Little missing opportunities of making me happy: Anne Bonny and Mary Read mentioning Jack (to insult him, mostly); they kissing when the house is on fire; Ed finding not just one letter but the whole pile of them; a better narrative use for Seagull Buttons (well, any narrative use, really); developing the bombclocks thing in a way where Auntie was not deprived of her superhuman detective skills; having Ned Low as bigger villain, with several appearances.

-The general development of Ed/Stede in the final episode... It's just confusing to me. My reading of Stede's mind state was that he was on autopilot since he killed Ned Low, and being abandoned by Ed and having his ass kicked by Zheng would wake him up a little, but this episode he's still in PROBLEM SOLVER mode, zero regrets about anything, still hasn't talked anything through EVER, he's just fine. With Ed I dont even ask for coherence bc he's always been a wtf guy, but I dont understand the "just do whatever you're good at" thing in the beginning of the episode, and he claiming back his leathers and his pirate-self and going on berserker mode and fighting along Stede as equals and blablabla if at the end he's still chosing to be a fucking innkeeper. Also, having a shitty inn in the middle of nowhere sounds too close to the antique shop in ep4, didn't they learn ANYTHING from Mary and Anne? I mean, the innkeeping was a predictible outcome, but the setting up of the episode was really aiming to the opposite, so it feels weird to me. In any case, I'm happy they're together and if being absolutely on their own in the loneliest house in the world doesn't get them to improve their communication, idk what else they could do.

-Still think they should have been lighthouse keepers instead.

-Next season Im totally muting every OFMD tag as soon as they announce the trailer release, because the promo and bts content was absolutely TOO MUCH. Those fuckers had been showing us stuff from the very climax of the fucking last episode since weeks before the season aired. I get it's a me problem, but I do believe it ruined my experience a lot, so fuck that.

And well. That's it. Good season, could have been great. Im happy but sad. Let's just hope that, if there's a season 3, they gave them more money and time to do it properly.

And before I post this and run away from tumblr, Im checking out how much of my wishlist had been fulfilled: - LUCIUS IS ALIVE - Stede Bonnet, berserker era [Not as I imagined, but hey] - The Queen Anne’s Revenge, either being captured or coming back as the ship Ed left behind when he went to The Revenge - The Blockade of Charleston (and make really absurd) [Still might happen in the future?] - Anne Bonny and Mary Read(as middle aged women who kinda mirror Ed and Stede, but they did it right) - Since he was already mentioned in s1, it would make sense introducing Hornigold, maybe as a new antagonist or something. - A rip off of that wwdits episode with the Vampire Council, except this time is the Pirate Council and its members are pirates from other movies and shows [I was really dreaming big here] - On that note, a really weird episode with every person who has played Blackbeard in recent years [Fully tripping] - More women and more asian characters. And more people speaking their mother tongues [So many Chinese gals, not one chinese word :(] - Ed finding out about Stede’s death and believing it [It did happened but not how/when we thought] - Ed meeting Mary and getting along [Never losing hope on this one] - Frenchie adopting a cat (and singing a song about it). - More info about everyone’s pasts. - I would LOVE having Bartholomew Roberts in the show. [YES PLEASE]

BLACKBONNET TITANIC AU OMG !!

Ed winning a dockside card game and rushing towards the ship in his purple crop top with his leather jacket slung over his shoulders. He's laughing, hair pulled away from his face as he waves at Izzy once the ship is set to sail.

Ed was having the time of his life on this ship, wandering out and about and generally just minding his own business while making fun of the upperclass, occasionally stealing from them just to have his fill, sketching the skylines, meeting Stede.

And Stede forced on the trip by his father to bond with his soon-to-be-wife Mary all for the sake of money and property. Stede, feeling the deep sadness that his life brings and despairing at the loss of marrying for love, suddenly feels the need to just be away from it all. He reaches a part of the boat that is almost always empty and he climbs over the railing, filled with the urge to just jump.

Edward in one of his late night walks with a smoke, expecting the normalcy of his day, stunned at the sight of Stede and quickly just runs over.

"What the fuck are you doing there, mate?!," Edward exclaims, hands outstretched towards the blonde man's direction. "Get over here, christ! Do you want to die?!"

Stede, over his shoulder, gives Ed a face of disbelief. "What am I--are you serious?! What's it look like I'm doing?!"

"So you do want to die?," Ed asks, bewildered. He looks the man up and down, noting the loose clothes and big robe, ticking the boxes in his mind and confirming that this person was one of the rich ones. He can't quite help but wonder about the man, he's clearly rich, he's on a ship that thousands of people wanted to be in, so what's his deal?

Stede scoffs, hands tightening at the railing. "No, I'm out for air," He says dryly. He mutters sounds of frustration to himself and was shocked when there's a rush of movement at his periphery. He turns his head sharply, gaping at the other man. "What are you doing?! Go back!"

"No, mate, you jump I jump," Edward says, inching towards Stede slowly.

"What?! I don't even know you!"

"Edward Teach," the man says simply, a small smile on his face. "Come on, mate, do you really want to jump? It's a big world, lots of places to see! I'm sure there's something here that's even better than dying a slow painful death by cold waters," Ed says, smile morphing into a grin with a dangerous glint in his eyes. "But if you really want to jump, I'll jump with you"

"No! Go back, you nut! What in the heavens are you even doing here?! No one occupies this place"

"I do, occasionally, and I'm glad I did now!," Ed shouts to be heard over the clashing of waters. He moves slowly towards Stede, giving the other ample time to react if he didn't want it.

Stede, skittish still yet curious, allows him.

"Come on, mate," Ed repeats, voice soft and eyes imploring. "Think about it, do you really want to do this?," He asks softly, hand inching towards Stede's. "I tried fishing in Wisconsin once, fell into the water and nesrly freezed to death. But this," Here he juts at the water with his chin. "This is loads more painful and terrifying. I think you deserve a better death than that, don't you?"

It takes a good while before Stede finally agrees in climbing back. Legs shakey and eyes red from crying, but he stands there, hand tightly grasped in Ed's.

"I'm Stede," he says once he has wits about again.

and the rest is you know how it goes aha but:

• Stede's fiance, Mary, is nice here. She talks about the man that accompanies her, Doug. How they're in love. They form an alliance, which Mr. Bonnet is not happy about.

• The whole gun running around scene still happens except it's ed, stede, and his dad.

• Mary and Doug try to help but, yknow, sinking ship and all that.

• Also, they all survive (not Stede's dad tho smh) because Stede, unlike rose, knows that there was enough room in that large piece of wood thank you

Your response about the toe thing not being a proportionate punishment was so good it calmed my wrath. (I also love that in this alternate mechanic universe Izzy's job mostly involves threatening people.) I hadn't even remembered that Ed encouraged him to speak his mind! It makes me think about their communication again, or lack there of. With few exceptions, Izzy seems to do most of the communicating. Ed has trouble communicating back, especially about more serious concerns. Ed trying be all "we share our thoughts on this ship" is something he's never actually seriously tried before, at least with Izzy. He thinks of the soft, comfortable rapport he had with Stede before the break-up, and I guess he probably wants to try that now with the ever supportive Izzy. But by shifting their relationship from 'captain who gives orders to the first mate who obeys' to 'equals speaking their minds', for the first time he is in a place where he's not brushing off Izzy's complaints as the legendary Blackbeard. And, uh oh, now that Ed's actually listening, it turns out that Izzy is PISSED. And Ed of course responds that he's still Blackbeard. But Izzy doesn't see him as Blackbeard anymore! Ed's change in behavior has ruptured his relationship with Izzy to the extent that his reliable pillar of loyalty and support is buckling, and if he doesn't act fast, he'll be left with nothing. If he actually continued the 'talk it out as a crew' approach, he could have reached some kind of understanding with Izzy. But his first and only attempt at real communication (at least since their relationship started to go down the tubes along with Ed's mood) ended in a massive failure. This isn't a small issue; it will need a high level of communication, social intelligence, empathy, patience, and honesty to resolve. Ed certainly isn't there yet. Better to go Full Kraken and get himself, his crew, and Izzy under control NOW before what little he has slips through his fingers.

Calmed your wrath and ignited my own, tbh!!

I agree with pretty much all of this message, but I wanna specifically point something out. I think the reason that Ed reacts so badly to what Izzy says (that he gave him permission to say, really), is that Ed is reacting.

What I mean by that is: Ed in that robe is Ed masking as Ed's impression of Stede (the rose-tinted glasses I mentioned earlier). Stede is soft and emotional and listens to Ed when he talks about his feelings, and Stede came up with talk it through as a crew, which is something Edward knows about because it's parroted so adorably in 1x09.

Ed is being Stede. He comes back to the Revenge and rather than going back to his old ship, he takes Stede's place. He moves into his cabin. He takes the place of Captain, he acquires all of Stede's friends and crew members. He embodies Stede, much like he did when he was wearing Stede's clothes in 1x04. He becomes him.

The problem is that Izzy has not been informed of this (and nor could or should he have been, really, and Ed doesn't realize himself), so when Izzy is mad and Ed says, "We share our thoughts on this ship," he does not expect what Izzy says to hurt him. He's built a squishy shell of protection around himself by becoming Stede, he's deliberately using Being Stede as a way of distancing himself from his pain and also becoming someone he isn't sick of being. He's wanted to become Stede since 1x04!!! IT WAS HIS IDEA TO TRADE CLOTHES.

(I actually would like to argue that some - not all, but some - of Ed's affection for Stede is actually based in the desire to be him rather than be with him? Like, yes, he wants to be with Stede and it's canon that he fell in love with him, but a lot of the things that "make Ed happy" are less being around Stede and more doing what Stede does? Idk how to properly explain what I mean by this. I hope you're following.)

So, Ed is wearing Stede's clothes, standing in his cabin, acting like his own version of him, and he tells Izzy that he can share his thoughts, not expecting Izzy to actually say something that gets him, and Izzy slices right through that Stede Shell he's built and hits Ed squarely in the center of the chest.

People who had no way to know this would happen: Ed and Izzy.

People who are suffering the fallout: Izzy, Lucius, the crew on the island, Jim, Frenchie, Fang and Ivan (who I hope doesn't get killed off-screen).

Izzy basically douses him with ice water and brings him out of Soft Stede Blanket Fort and back into Ed world. He inadvertently rips off the mask, not knowing that what's underneath is just exposed squishy bits ready to be torn apart.

Further thoughts:

These two passages made me groan because they're so true. Izzy's communication style leaves much to be desired, but he actually communicates a surprising amount, especially when it comes to Edward. Edward knows what Izzy is thinking 97% of the time (3% allocated for his feelings, but honestly idk if Izzy hasn't in his own way told Edward how he feels and been 'rejected' by someone who actually did not pick up those social cues? It reminds me of a ship I used to love, but I can't remember the ship or show, just that person A told person B they loved them, and person B didn't...get what they meant by it? And so Person B was all, "Oh man, you're my best friend," or whatever it was, which they meant 100%, but person A heard that as "my best friend and only my best friend" and so backed off, not knowing Person B felt the same way just didn't...realize Person A was confessing love. This lasted for literal years of both not knowing the other loved them back and it was gut-wrenching. I can feel this fucking show on the tip of my tongue and I cannot remember it, and it's going to bother me until I remember, isn't it?)

Anyway that got long so I'll restart my sentence: Edward knows what Izzy is thinking and planning 97% of the time. The only times he doesn't tend to be times when Izzy is physically unable to communicate (for example, is at Spanish Jackie's). Izzy yells his feelings and that's not great, but he expresses them and tells Edward where he stands.

Izzy rarely if ever gets anything like that in return.

So it makes sense that it ended where it ended, with Ed freaking out about Izzy's feelings and making them a problem rather than fixing it before it got worse.

(Still not an endorsement of his behavior, Ed fucked up.)

obviously (more than anything) I want to see Stede and Ed reunited and fuckery to ensue. I don’t much care how they play it (happy, sad, angry, silly) I just want more of them onscreen together. Rhys and Taika have such great chemistry. But I also want to see backgrounds for more of the crew (how they became the men they are). Particularly Izzy Hands. What made him like that? what made him worship Blackbeard so much? I also want to see a good sword fight between Izzy and Jim. (and more Jim backstory in general.) from the actual history of pirates of that time, I’d love it if we met Benjamin Hornigold (Ed’s former captain) and Samuel Bellamy (aka Black Sam aka “the Prince of Pirates” or the “Robin Hood” of pirates. He was known for his mercy and generosity to those he captured on raids. I think he’d get along well with Stede! Black Sam also had a mysterious relationship with a “witch” from Cape Cod named Goody Hallett. I’d love to meet them in season two! also the lesbian pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read! (I’d love it if we found Anne and Mary were behind the mutiny aboard Calico Jack’s ship. And they are now co-captaining it happily. Out on the open sea! Being gay and doing crimes!) I hope we deal thematically in season two with toxic masculinity and intergenerational trauma. And forgiveness. and lord I hope it’s totally bizarre and super funny. imma be pissed if they lose any of the humor in season two and go too sappy. There’s so much potential! fingers crossed?

Woah okay lots to unpack here!!! I gotta say; I agree with pretty much everything you just said OP!!! Very well put!!!

I keep going back and fourth about how I want The Reunion between Ed and Stede to go down; whether it should be super romantic, or angsty, or a full-on sword fight, or if they should make it more comedic and lighthearted and tbh any route they decide to go with would be fine by me! I just wanna see them together again because i really do believe that one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) strengths of this show is Taika and Rhys together.

I would LOVE some more background on Izzy, but tbh I'm really interested in Stede's crew too!! I was wondering about this earlier actually so it's funny you bring it up lol, but i wonder how/why they agreed to be a part of Stede's crew? Like, maybe it was because he was offering to pay actual wages? Or maybe it was because they needed to hide somewhere (well, we know that is probably true for Jim and Olu, but what about everyone else..?) I would also be interested in Blackbeard and Calico Jack's past, and their experiences on Hornigold's ship

I definitely want to see more female pirates in season 2 as well!! As I mentioned in a previous ask, I'm not totally sure how they'd work it into the show yet considering the cast of characters is already pretty large and spread-out just in the first season, but it would lowkey feel like a missed opportunity if they didn't at least lightly feature Anne Bonny and Mary Read at some point

I definitely think we're gonna get more storylines about gender and toxic masculity in season 2, just judging from where episode 10 left us off. Like, idk if this is me just projecting my nonbinary-ness onto another one of my comfort characters lol but I just feel as though Ed taking on this "Kraken" persona at the end of ep 10 feels a lot like.. a transition? A changing of identity? And most of it is rooted in toxic masculinity and pressure placed on him to present/act a certain way (enforced by Izzy in ep 10 but probably taught to him when he was a child) because in the very beginning of episode 10, i think Ed was really beginning to embrace a more conventionally "feminine" side of himself (the pink nail polish, the floral robe, being very open and vulnerable emotionally with the other men on the ship and encouraging them to do the same, ect.) and I think a lot of season 2 is going to see Ed sorta struggling between these two identities a lot..

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Happy Hump Day!

Yesterday was six hours of teaching! It’s challenging, make no mistake but, fortunately, I am good. No … like … really good! It’s the best show in town! They shake my hand or fist bump me at the end of the lesson and thank me! I love that! I really appreciate that! Hard work but so rewarding! Yesterday, we analysed the K-Pop industry; a million miles from the UK music industry but very interesting. At the moment, there are only two UK acts in the Global Top 10 (Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran), whereas there are THREE Korean acts in the Global Top 10. Would we have more acts in the Global Top 10 if we returned to the days of One Direction, and even Spice Girls, Boyzone, Westlife, All Saints and Take That? The global market loves boy bands and girl groups singing pop music. Why have we stopped doing that?

Saw a very interesting idea on my X (Twitter) feed the other day and saw a very interesting video on TikTok a few days later. Both posts are connected. The idea might seem a bit controversial but I really like it. The idea is: marriage licenses should only last for 20 years. Then, at the end of 20 years, the couples can decide whether they want to re-new their vows or not. Divorce is very expensive, so why not? If things are going good: no problem. If things are going bad: both parties just walk away. And this ties in to a video I saw of a woman explaining why men are so reluctant to get married; divorce courts always favour women and might even make the man homeless! He loses half of everything and she probably gets the kids too. Who needs that? Of course, there is a such a thing as a prenuptial agreement but how many ordinary couples sign that? In fact, this explains why some men are reluctant to even embark on a relationship! Commitment issues? No. Not wanting to be homeless issues!

Big love to my buddy Stevie Dundee, who has involved me in his Scorpio celebration at The White Lion (Streatham) on Saturday, November 4th. There will be four Scorps in attendance: me, Stevie, Jigs and Dee DeeMure plus a supporting cast of top quality jocks. I remember first meeting Stevie down the road at another pub. He was promoting club nights at this place and it was hot’n’sweaty, and then there was a basement downstairs that was dark, hot’n’sweaty. I think we can safely assume that Stevie likes hot’n’sweaty because, as you know, The White Lion is what I call a ‘get down’ place. They don’t just dance, they get down! If you’re anywhere near Streatham High Road on that day, it would be lovely to see you.

Once I finish at 4.00 today, my weekend begins! Working from home Thursday and Friday. Thursday night, I shall be at John Saunderson’s networking event at Tileyard. Not really work. More a right laugh! This beautiful girl who works at LCCM is showcasing there, so I’m looking forward to seeing her. I shall also be taking countless selfies of me and some other old geezers.

On Saturday night, my crazy, little niece Katie-Frou is hosting a baby shower. Yes, she is bringing a new granddaughter into my life! You know what that means; I will be TOTAL PUTTY in the hands of this little girl. Sunday afternoon: The Trouble and I will have a quick meet up with one of our favourite people (and her daughter).

Have a wonderful and well-endowed Wednesday. I love you all. Yes, a crazy, bald man loves and cares about you.

13 Did Ed really plan to murder Stede when he told Izzy the plan?

100%. Like, he's very clearly not happy about it -- he and Stede have a pretty instantaneous rapport that can't be read as anything other than completely sincere -- but he definitely means it in the moment. He abandons that plan very soon thereafter, but I don't think we'd get him tearfully confessing that he meant to burn off Stede's face and steal his identity during the bathtub scene if he didn't, at some point, intend to do just that.

10 What the fuck is Izzy’s problem? Is it/should it be fixable?

Oooooh boy. Okay, so fair warning that while I adore Izzy as a character, I am not, uh, particularly sympathetic in some ways? I'm like 45% "what a funny feral little man" and 45% "I would enjoy seeing him get his comeuppance" and maybe 10% "Con O'Neill's voice is very sexy to me and I'm weak."

Anyway.

Short-ish answer, because there is admittedly a longer one: I think that within the story, Izzy's primary problem is that he's convinced himself that everything he's doing is for Ed's own good, but Izzy inherently does not understand Ed or conceptualize him as a whole person rather than the very specific version of Edward/Blackbeard that exists in his head. This is clear pretty much from moment one in ways that have very little to do with Stede, or the way we later see him explicitly ignore what Ed says he needs and wants in favor of what Izzy thinks he needs. He's been working with Ed for some mumble mumble period of time, and the clouds-that-look-like-frankfurters thing just flies completely over his head. He admires Ed as this hypercompetent sailor, but is also very quick to dismiss Ed's observations because they look a bit more whimsical than he's comfortable with.

Insofar as what is narratively wrong with Izzy, he is to Ed what the Badmintons are to Stede: the voice of the status quo, there to drag one of our deuteragonists back into the kind of toxic masculinity that the show is very explicitly condemnatory of. It's not an accident that one episode after Chauncy derails Stede's attempts to move toward something healthy and loving by playing on his insecurities and fears, Izzy is there doing approximately the same thing with Ed.

That being said, I think we have like 50/50 odds of an Izzy redemption arc in the future, and I'm fine with that. Someday I'll write a whole bit of meta about how important it is that we see Fang and Ivan talking about how it makes Fang feel when Izzy pulls his beard and how Ivan is nothing but supportive during that conversation, long before either of them have any significant exposure to the talk-it-through culture of the Revenge; I think at the end of the day, this is a narrative that supports the idea that men will seek healthier ways of communicating and relating to each other if given the opportunity. Izzy has already been given a lot more complexity and nuance than someone like the Badmintons, and I don't think it's outside of the realm of possibility that we'll see him growing and changing in future seasons.

It's either that or we'll see him go full-throated villain, which tbh I'm also fine with.

a) If you've read my fic, you know that what I want most in this world is Ed and Stede bonding with the half of the crew that they each got in the divorce.

b) More of Vico Ortiz's face and also the pink robe of gay sadness, because my needs are really very simple and straightforward at the end of the day.

Hi anon, I most certainly do! Thanks so much for sending this ask, I was super excited when I saw it because I’m always happy to celebrate short fics - they could use more appreciation! I’ve wanted to do a proper shorts reclist for a while so I indulged myself and went big, hope you don’t mind! Putting this together was quite hard - going through my bookmarks I realized that I usually go for angsty shorts 💀 so I tried my best not to include anything too extreme, I hope these are okay!

This became a lil monster with 40 recs (and I have lots more hehe) so I decided to sort them by genre - the last category includes light angst (more on the contemplative side) because I can’t help myself. This is a secret relationship delight! Sneaking around gets so much better when dramatic Blaise is losing his shit to protect the Council of Serpents’ integrity! A+ faux-drama, super fun and sweet.

My favorite brand of thirsty and chaotic Draco; being inside his mind is such a crazy ride and you won’t stop laughing for a second. Amazing dialogue and insanely scorching smut as per loveglows’ usual 🤤

This is a Harry triumph, so fun and charming! Here he’s the one chaotic and thirsty, for a change - I’m obsessed with his internal ranting under the lust potion. Brilliant narrative and top notch characterization, a classic!

Drunk Draco has never been so absurd and I LOVE it! This goes from hilarious to vulnerable and sweet in a heartbeat; pining Draco is a precious thing and Harry’s gentle persistence made my heart swell.

18. Stand Back: I'm About to Perform Archaeology by Blowfish_Diaries (2018, E, 9.7k)

This fic could definitely use more appreciation - I had a blast with Draco’s hilarious voice and their cute married banter! The plot is quite original and I love the 8th year domestic vibes.

19. The Full Monty by @magpiefngrl (2017, E, 9.8k)

The calendar fic we deserve 👏🏻 this is ultimate thirsty Draco being completely obliterated by Harry’s casual attractiveness but mostly by his kind heart and big smile. One of my favorite comfort reads, hilarious, sweet and so damn sexy, the full monty combo is here!

20. Aural Gratification by birdsofshore (2014, E, 10k)

This fic is a classic, charming and hysterical with an adorable Harry thirsting over Draco’s smooth voice. Such an original concept and engaging read, not to mention the rewarding shade of smut!

A beautiful love story packing an impressive amount of character, conflict and emotion. We are invited to witness as work partners Harry and Draco finally take a leap of faith and grow out of their casual arrangement.

Subtle and heart-wrenching, the sharp and clever narrative creates fascinating dynamics between this brilliantly written Draco and poor oblivious Harry trying to make sense out of it. An all-time fave. Cw: infidelity (not Drarry).

Fucks buddies gone wrong but make it soft so we get to watch as pining Draco patiently waits for Harry to get the memo. Sweet and intimate, with lots of late night talks and comfortable silence.

40. Tidings of Comfort series by @blamebrampton (2012, G, 10k)

Quietly cathartic and atmospheric, this fic is a poignant balm to the soul; such a beautiful tone, such lovely interactions! A must-read for those who enjoy church settings, honest talks and redeemed Draco. All-time fave.
