AFTERGLOW #018. surprise!

KARINA’S POV

"hurry up," i muttered to myself, fixating on the traffic light that stubbornly remained on that attention-grabbing fiery red. impatience washed over me as i glared at the signal, eagerly waiting for it to switch to green. i drummed my fingers on the steering wheel until finally, it changed, and i hit the gas pedal.

ding.

i extended my hand to the passenger seat while rummaging through my purse. my eyes remained fixed on the road as I retrieved my cell phone from inside my purse. glancing down at the text, i let out a relieved and contented sigh as i recognized the sender. ”it means the world to me! thank you sm cutie :)” i quickly typed and hit send.

i pull into the driveway and step out of my car. opening the gate, i make my way to the front door and give it a knock. i hear footsteps approaching and take a step back as the door swings open. "you're here!" i hear the excited voice exclaim. "i am. It's great to see you again!" i say, smiling softly at the little girl. she skips away to get the cake from the fridge. i wait at the doorway, and soon the little girl's mother appears. "thank you so much! i couldn't find anyone on such short notice. i owe you one," i say. "of course, anything for your family," she assures me. she leans against the doorway and adds, "although, if you want to owe me, you can take care of my little girl." she replies, "of course, i would love to." just then, the little girl returns with a box in her hand. "here you go!" she says, beaming. i take the box from her and hand her mother the money. "thank you again, it means a lot," i express. "it's no problem, we hope to see you again soon," the older woman says before closing the front door.

Y/N’S POV

🕕 6:45

as karina rummaged through her purse for her keys to unlock the front door, i couldn't help but wonder who she intended to send that text to. a tinge of jealousy started to creep in as i pondered who might be the mystery person of that nickname. "y/n?" suddenly, karina's voice snapped me out of my thoughts as she stood at the entrance of her now unlocked door. "sorry, i zoned out for a second there," i laughed awkwardly, stepping inside her house.

“wow. it’s pretty in here!”

“ah thank you. it took me forever to find a place like this.”

i walk towards her window, taking in the beauty of her place. "and you've got an amazing view!" i exclaim, we stand there in silence, gazing out at the city. suddenly, Karina breaks the silence and speaks up.

"feel free to put anything on the TV if you'd like. make yourself at home!" she said with a smile, motioning for me to take a seat on the couch.

“need something to drink? or eat?”

“water is fine!” i replied as i took a seat on the couch.

karina nodded and walked into the kitchen. moments later, she returned with two glasses of iced water. i thanked her and took a sip. as we sat there, silence enveloped us, but it wasn't awkward at all. it felt like a peaceful and comfortable silence between the two of us.

i tap my fingers against my thigh, trying to think of a way to break the silence. then karina starts off, "so... i took your suggestion and watched some movies you recommended." i look over at her and ask,

"which one was your favorite?"

"10 Things I Hate About You." my eyes light up as i smile and say,

"oh, that's a classic! i love that movie!"

karina grabs the remote and turns on the TV, saying, "well, now I'm ready to watch some more. any suggestions?”

🕛12:35

as the rom-com marathon reaches its final moments, we both sink further into the couch, absorbed in conversation and bursting with laughter.

i look over at karina, with a bright smile. "i told you rom-coms are amazing! no one can possibly hate on them!" i exclaimed.

"okay, i'll admit it. you were right. i had a good time watching them, with you."

with karina’s kind words, i couldn't help but feel a warm blush creeping up my cheeks. grateful that the lights were turned off, sparing me the embarrassment.

"as much as i love sharing my love for rom-coms with you, karina, i should probably get going soon. it's getting pretty late." i let out a sigh.

as i uttered those words, karina's eyes sparkled with mischief. “before you go… i have something to show you. wait right here,” she said, disappearing into the kitchen. my curiosity peaked as i eagerly anticipated what she had to show me. a few moments passed as she emerged with a cake in her hands. candles flickered, and one caught my attention immediately. it had the number '50' with a 'k' next to it. my jaw dropped in disbelief. “w-what's this?” i managed to stutter out. karina blushed and confessed, “i wanted to surprise you for reaching 50k followers. i know how long you’ve been waiting for this moment…” overwhelmed with appreciation, i couldn't find the right words. but actions speak louder than words, right? so, i wrapped my arms around her, giving her the tightest, warmest hug.

"you have no idea how much this means to me," i say, my voice filled with genuine appreciation. as i release her from the hug, a smile spreads across my face. "thank you," i express my appreciation once again.

🕐 1:00am

karina and i engaged in conversation while also enjoying the cake. “red velvet, my favorite.” i say as i enjoyed the taste of the cake in my mouth. “it’s definitely in my top 3 cake flavors.” she says.

i still couldn't help but feel the question i’ve been wanting to ask her lingering in the air. "karina, can i ask you something?" i inquire. karina swallows the cake she was chewing and looks at me. "yeah, sure." i take a deep breath before continuing. "so... earlier today, you texted me something, but i’m not sure if you were aware that you texted the wrong person." karina's eyes widen in shock as i watch her scramble for her phone.

"i'm so sorry, I had no idea," she says as she unlocks her phone and opens our messages.

"who did you mean to send it to? you called them 'cutie.' are you seeing someone?" the words slip out of my mouth before i even have a chance to think. karina chuckles softly and puts her phone back down. "it's a family friend's daughter. she's twelve years old and incredibly talented in baking. in fact, she’s the one who made this cake." suddenly, heat rushes to my face. "oh, sorry..." i reply, fixing my gaze somewhere else.

karinas lips curl up into a smile. “you weren’t, jealous? were you?” she asks me. “w-what! no! of course not!” i exclaim.

“okay, okay, sure.” she replies with a smile.

AFTERGLOW #010. i wish you would

🕢 7:30PM

my hearts practically almost jumping out of my chest as i stand in front of the entrance to aespa’s recording studio. i stand outside for a few seconds as i hear footsteps approaching.

“right on time.” karina says as she holds the door open for me. “are your friends on their way?” she asks

“yes they are! sorry, i would’ve came a bit earlier but i was talking with my friends and lost track of time.”

“don’t worry! i think you came at the perfect time.” she says as she sits down in front of the television, patting the spot next to her, gesturing for me to sit there. i sit down next to karina as she puts on our cover, that’s now about to premiere on youtube.

“woah, over 15 thousand people waiting at the premiere…” i say as i bite my lip nervously. karina looks at me and lightly giggles, “hey, i can tell how nervous you are but there’s nothing to worry about.” i look at karina as i slightly sink into my seat. “i know… it’s just, whenever i release a cover it’s a couple of hundred people that watch it. not 15 thousand…”

suddenly the door swings open as i see ningning pop her head into the room. ningning spots me and steps into the room as i see the rest of aespa and my friends behind her too. “hi y/n it’s so nice to see you again!” ningning says as she approaches me. i get up to greet ningning and the rest of aespa. “it’s so nice to see you guys again too!” i smile at them.

“your bestfriends are here too yknow…” yeonjun says as he playfully rolls his eyes at me. “thank you for coming you guys.” karina says to my friends and smiles.

“thanks so much for inviting us. this place looks amazing!” yunjin says as she looks around the place in awe.

“of course!” karina gets up and pulls out a couple of chairs for everyone. “feel free to take a seat guys.”

everyone thanks karina as keeho suddenly speaks up, “how many more minutes now until it’s out now?” he asks. karina quickly looks at the time “exactly 10 more minutes now!”

“wow, so soon!” i say nervously as everyone else laughs. “you got nothing to be nervous about y/n! the covers gonna do amazing!” minjeong says. “easy for you guys to say, you’re used to this! the highest views i’ve gotten was only 1k!” i say as i fidget with my fingers. karina notices and places a reassuring hand on my shoulders. “everything will be fine y/n don’t worry too much! let’s have some fun!” karina says as she gets up to get everyone some drinks.

“it’s about to start!” haewon shouts out abruptly, which causes karina to quickly give everyone their drinks and sit back down.

“the anticipation is killing me!” giselle says impatiently.

suddenly the screen pans to karina and y/n sitting in front of the screen with their guitars in hand.

🔴 RECORDING

“hi everyone! it’s karina here.”

“and i’m y/n!”

“y/n is a friend very dear to me, and i’m glad i’m able to be doing this cover with her” karina smiles lightly as she adds, “make sure to check out further information in the description below! and without further a-due here is our cover on ‘I Wish You Would by Taylor Swift.’ ”

karina - it’s two am in your car… windows down, you pass my street the memories start…

karina’s voice is like honey to your ears. you want to listen to her forever if you were able to.

karina - and i wish you knew that i’ll never forget you as long as i live…

you don’t realize how drawn you are to karina’s voice until you feel as if you can’t hear anyone else speaking around you.

y/n - and i wish you would knew that i miss you too much to be mad anymore…

you soon realize how in the video the whole time karina is looking over at you, smiling fondly at you, and you start to feel your face burning up.

y/n - you always knew how to push my buttons

karina - this mad mad love makes you come running

both - i wish you would.

and with that, the cover comes to an end. your friends and the rest of aespa immediately start clapping.

“that was so cute!” ningning exclaims

“you both did amazing.” yunho says smiling.

a few more minutes chit chatting and compliments being thrown to both karina and i everyone decided it’s time to go home and rest.

“you ready to leave, y/n?” yunjin asks me.

karina suddenly speaks up, “i’d like to speak with y/n for a bit, alone.”

yeonjun’s face suddenly lights up, “yeah of course take your time! we’ll be at your dorm waiting y/n!” and with that yeonjun practically shoves yunjin and the rest of our friends out the door, as the door closes behind them.

i look at karina, waiting for her to speak up. “see you did amazing y/n. your voice is really like an angel.” her comment causes me to blush which only makes her lightly laugh. “ah thank you karina… you did amazing too!” she smiles, “you know… i wouldn’t mind doing another cover with you in the future if you’d like.” i smile back at her, “and i’m always free to do anything with you whenever you’d like. but i really should get going now.” “of course! sorry, i would walk you but i have a couple of things to work on.” she replies, “don’t worry! it’s okay good luck with whatever you’re working on!” i say as i leave the recording studio.

AFTERGLOW #003. lightbulb

i’m standing outside yeonjun’s dorm, knocking. “he better not still be asleep. he’s gonna make us late.” i whisper underneath my breath.

finally, yunho opens the door looking confused as soon as he sees me standing outside. “uhm weren’t you supposed to leave with yeonjun?” he questions.

“what are you talking about? i was waiting for yeonjun but he isn’t answering my texts.” she says.

yunho seems just as confused as you are. “he left like over twenty minutes ago. he said you two were going to leave earlier than usual for some reason.”

i roll my eyes annoyingly. “are you kidding me? he’s so annoying i’m going to beat him up.” i scoff. “thanks yunho. now i have to go before i run late.”

“no problem. and good luck.” he smiles and closes the door.

after 10 minutes of very fast speed walking i finally arrived on time to class. i push past the doors and i see yeonjun sitting at a seat that isn’t our usual seating spot. wait a minute. that’s karina’s spot… i look at him confusingly as i walk up in front of his desk. “why are you sitting here?” i ask. he looks up at me, “i had to charge my laptop. the outlet at our desk was too far away for me to charge it.” i guess that’s a reasonable explanation. i couldn’t sit next to him since there was already someone next to him, so i just decided to just sit in the desk in front of him.

as i get my things out of my backpack, i see something moving towards me from the corner of my eye. i slightly look up and i see it’s karina. my eyes widen for a split second as i quickly look back down, pretending i’m getting something out of my backpack. “please don’t sit next to me, please don’t sit next to me.” i say to myself.

“is this seat taken.” a familiar voice asks. “shit.” i think to myself. i look up and see karina standing by the empty seat next to me. “it’s free.” i answer. as i said that she sits next to me and prepares for the lecture to start.

AFTERGLOW #005. collab

it’s been a month with the same old routine. yeonjun sitting behind me so i can sit next to karina. for the most part, i guess i’ve been getting used to it, it’s just so awkward. i have wanted to talk with her but, every time i try to talk to her no words are able to come out of my mouth.

“y/n! are you even listening to what i’m saying?!” i look over at yeonjun who’s been glaring at me for not listening to him. “sorry, i zoned out for a minute there.” i say as we arrive at the front doors of the class. “whatever i’ll tell you what i was saying later.” he says annoyingly as we enter the classroom, and go to our seats.

as every student is settling in for the lecture to begin, the professor suddenly speaks up, “Good morning class.” he smiles at everyone and continues, “As you may all know, i give out two major important projects to you students throughout the year. One in the beginning of the year, and finally one at the end of the year. These projects will severely impact your grade so if you miss at least one of these, you will automatically fail this class.”

The professor walks to his computer as he projects something on the whiteboard. “For this first assignment i will let you choose the person of your choice to work with.” As he says this i look back over at yeonjun who’s already chatting it up with his desk partner, or should i say, “new friend.” yeonjun looks at me and says, “sorry y/n i have a partner already.” i can see a smile slowly starts to creep onto his face. he had this all planned i bet. waiting for the teacher to assign a project so i can be stuck to do it with karina. what an asshole. i turn back as a sigh leaves my lips.

i suddenly hear a voice to the left of me speak up. “i guess since there’s no one else for us to partner up with, it’s just the both of us then?” i look at karina whose sitting next to me, “yeah, i guess its just us two then.” i say awkwardly. the teacher soon explains that this project is going to be a duet with our partner. “This is why i’ve been showing all you students new techniques to better your singing voices. continue to talk this over with your partner until class ends. pick a good song that suits BOTH of your voices and make me proud students.” He gently smiles as he sits back down at his desk. “if you have any questions please come up to my desk and talk to me about it. other than that, good luck to all of you students.”

karina clears her throat as she speaks up, “so for our song… do you have any ideas?” i think for a second and answer, “well if you’re still a big taylor swift fan as you were back then, then mayb-“ she cuts me off abruptly “yes!” she suddenly shouts out, “oh sorry…” her and i laugh at her sudden action. “well then, any taylor song in mind?” i question her. i can tell that she’s in deep thought over which song to choose, so i decide to help her out. “how about ‘I wish you would’?” i know this is karina’s favorite song which is why i said this. karina’s face suddenly lights up and she smiles, “that’s perfect.”

as we continue chatting it up about the project our professor suddenly tells us that the class is now dismissed. “wow i didn’t even realize we’ve been talking for that long.” karina says. “yeah same haha.” “i’ll text you more about the project then later today?” “yeah sounds good.” i say as she gets up to leave the classroom. and then the sudden realization hits me. she still has my number saved? yeonjun looks at me and starts to smile, “what are you blushing about y/n?” he cooes at me as he pokes me. “shut up!” i say as i swat his hand away from me, which just makes him laugh even more than he already is.
