AFTERGLOW #018. surprise!

KARINA’S POV

"hurry up," i muttered to myself, fixating on the traffic light that stubbornly remained on that attention-grabbing fiery red. impatience washed over me as i glared at the signal, eagerly waiting for it to switch to green. i drummed my fingers on the steering wheel until finally, it changed, and i hit the gas pedal.

ding.

i extended my hand to the passenger seat while rummaging through my purse. my eyes remained fixed on the road as I retrieved my cell phone from inside my purse. glancing down at the text, i let out a relieved and contented sigh as i recognized the sender. ”it means the world to me! thank you sm cutie :)” i quickly typed and hit send.

i pull into the driveway and step out of my car. opening the gate, i make my way to the front door and give it a knock. i hear footsteps approaching and take a step back as the door swings open. "you're here!" i hear the excited voice exclaim. "i am. It's great to see you again!" i say, smiling softly at the little girl. she skips away to get the cake from the fridge. i wait at the doorway, and soon the little girl's mother appears. "thank you so much! i couldn't find anyone on such short notice. i owe you one," i say. "of course, anything for your family," she assures me. she leans against the doorway and adds, "although, if you want to owe me, you can take care of my little girl." she replies, "of course, i would love to." just then, the little girl returns with a box in her hand. "here you go!" she says, beaming. i take the box from her and hand her mother the money. "thank you again, it means a lot," i express. "it's no problem, we hope to see you again soon," the older woman says before closing the front door.

Y/N’S POV

🕕 6:45

as karina rummaged through her purse for her keys to unlock the front door, i couldn't help but wonder who she intended to send that text to. a tinge of jealousy started to creep in as i pondered who might be the mystery person of that nickname. "y/n?" suddenly, karina's voice snapped me out of my thoughts as she stood at the entrance of her now unlocked door. "sorry, i zoned out for a second there," i laughed awkwardly, stepping inside her house.

“wow. it’s pretty in here!”

“ah thank you. it took me forever to find a place like this.”

i walk towards her window, taking in the beauty of her place. "and you've got an amazing view!" i exclaim, we stand there in silence, gazing out at the city. suddenly, Karina breaks the silence and speaks up.

"feel free to put anything on the TV if you'd like. make yourself at home!" she said with a smile, motioning for me to take a seat on the couch.

“need something to drink? or eat?”

“water is fine!” i replied as i took a seat on the couch.

karina nodded and walked into the kitchen. moments later, she returned with two glasses of iced water. i thanked her and took a sip. as we sat there, silence enveloped us, but it wasn't awkward at all. it felt like a peaceful and comfortable silence between the two of us.

i tap my fingers against my thigh, trying to think of a way to break the silence. then karina starts off, "so... i took your suggestion and watched some movies you recommended." i look over at her and ask,

"which one was your favorite?"

"10 Things I Hate About You." my eyes light up as i smile and say,

"oh, that's a classic! i love that movie!"

karina grabs the remote and turns on the TV, saying, "well, now I'm ready to watch some more. any suggestions?”

🕛12:35

as the rom-com marathon reaches its final moments, we both sink further into the couch, absorbed in conversation and bursting with laughter.

i look over at karina, with a bright smile. "i told you rom-coms are amazing! no one can possibly hate on them!" i exclaimed.

"okay, i'll admit it. you were right. i had a good time watching them, with you."

with karina’s kind words, i couldn't help but feel a warm blush creeping up my cheeks. grateful that the lights were turned off, sparing me the embarrassment.

"as much as i love sharing my love for rom-coms with you, karina, i should probably get going soon. it's getting pretty late." i let out a sigh.

as i uttered those words, karina's eyes sparkled with mischief. “before you go… i have something to show you. wait right here,” she said, disappearing into the kitchen. my curiosity peaked as i eagerly anticipated what she had to show me. a few moments passed as she emerged with a cake in her hands. candles flickered, and one caught my attention immediately. it had the number '50' with a 'k' next to it. my jaw dropped in disbelief. “w-what's this?” i managed to stutter out. karina blushed and confessed, “i wanted to surprise you for reaching 50k followers. i know how long you’ve been waiting for this moment…” overwhelmed with appreciation, i couldn't find the right words. but actions speak louder than words, right? so, i wrapped my arms around her, giving her the tightest, warmest hug.

"you have no idea how much this means to me," i say, my voice filled with genuine appreciation. as i release her from the hug, a smile spreads across my face. "thank you," i express my appreciation once again.

🕐 1:00am

karina and i engaged in conversation while also enjoying the cake. “red velvet, my favorite.” i say as i enjoyed the taste of the cake in my mouth. “it’s definitely in my top 3 cake flavors.” she says.

i still couldn't help but feel the question i’ve been wanting to ask her lingering in the air. "karina, can i ask you something?" i inquire. karina swallows the cake she was chewing and looks at me. "yeah, sure." i take a deep breath before continuing. "so... earlier today, you texted me something, but i’m not sure if you were aware that you texted the wrong person." karina's eyes widen in shock as i watch her scramble for her phone.

"i'm so sorry, I had no idea," she says as she unlocks her phone and opens our messages.

"who did you mean to send it to? you called them 'cutie.' are you seeing someone?" the words slip out of my mouth before i even have a chance to think. karina chuckles softly and puts her phone back down. "it's a family friend's daughter. she's twelve years old and incredibly talented in baking. in fact, she’s the one who made this cake." suddenly, heat rushes to my face. "oh, sorry..." i reply, fixing my gaze somewhere else.

karinas lips curl up into a smile. “you weren’t, jealous? were you?” she asks me. “w-what! no! of course not!” i exclaim.

“okay, okay, sure.” she replies with a smile.
