Something has been wrong with my legs. I've been numb from the waist down for a week, and I can't feel my feet at all. I've done my own research and I think it's sciatica. The chiropractor seems to agree. I don't like doctors after the way they ruined my mom's health, but I don't have a choice.
I suppose it's a blessing in disguise, because all my efforts to try to get a doctor's appointment have simply made me hate this world more and look forward to the day when Jesus comes back to burn it all down.
I have at least learned how to walk with this new condition so that I'm no longer so unsteady, and I've started mixing up my routine so I'm not sitting down while I'm at home. But I still will need a doctor's note to be able to get one of those standing desks at work (I know I need one, I've been dealing with tailbone pain for 4 years). I'd hoped the chiropractor could give me one, but he said a doctor has to do that.
After days of prayer, research, and scanning through my insurance, I decided on an osteopath, because I'd rather have a holistic doctor that treats ME and not just my symptoms. There's only one on my insurance that's taking new patients. I can't schedule anything during a work day because their hold times + registration is longer than my break. So I decided to walk in. And I got told, "No, you'll have to call in so we can input it in our computer. No, we don't have a form you can fill out and hand back. There's only 2 of us receptionists, and we can't take that much time to register new patients over the counter." Granted, it's been years since my mom had to sign up as a new patient anywhere, but I don't remember her going through this. She just filled out a bunch of forms.
So I come home, I call, and the first thing I get told is that I'll have to call my insurance and get them to change my primary doctor, because even though I haven't gone to a doctor, it seems that my insurance automatically assigned me one when I signed up for health insurance. And when I looked at the list of doctors: they assigned me an OB doctor! Uh, hello?! I'm not pregnant, I'm not even married, I'm just fat. So first off, thank you very much for reminding me of all my insecurities. Second, where does anyone come off TELLING me who I am and am not supposed to see for my own health?!?!? I didn't think the government had socialized our medicine YET. I guess this is just the first step....
By the time I got that straightened out, I didn't have time to call the doctor's office back and get registered before they closed. Thursday, I went to the chiropractor and then did all my shopping that I hadn't done because it took me that long to be able to walk, so again, I didn't have time to call. Friday, their office closes at noon. Seriously??? Friday is like the best day for people to come in so they have a whole weekend to recover from all the crap the doctor did to them, and find out if the new meds are gonna work for them before they try to go back to work!
So I figured, "well, they're open on Saturdays, I'll call this morning."
"Oh, we only register new patients during the week."
I haven't been able to feel my feet in a week. Do they give a fig? No. "We're a business, and you're gonna do things OUR way."
I am so livid right now. My mom is old enough that when she was a little girl, her mom could call the doctor in the middle of the night- like, the actual doctor, not just his office- and he'd either make a housecall at 2 in the morning, or grandma could take my mom to HIS HOUSE.
Nowadays, it's all big business, and all run by a computer. And it makes me so FURIOUS!!! I am not a computer, I do not appreciate being treated like one!
If I didn't feel like God wanted me to go to an osteopath, I would try a different clinic, because I am already thoroughly disgusted with this one.
I have to wonder if this is just one other thing God has done to show me just how bad the world is, and to make me pray for Jesus to return soon. Because with me, it may start out personal, but then I start seeing the bigger picture, how things are leading up to Revelation. I may be wrong, but I still believe the Mark of the Beast is driven by the Internet.

What I have experienced was out of this world, talking about sever pain sensations that were played immediately with every tinny single movement of my body. I went back and forth for months and months between one physician to another, and no one was sensitive to my pain, in fact I remember one of my physicians at that time, and she tolled me, that I was spoiled, and that in her opinion nothing was wrong with you… but my chiropractor Dr. Janine Angelotti, DC, BS, QME… did sympathize with my desperation regarding my pain, although this type of pain was a common thing as a result of a car accident, she suggested to do an MRI… Since in my X-Ray nothing was wrong, and as a chiropractor surgeon specializing in pain management and surgery’s, she did treat me with combination of manual manipulation in the form of chiropractic adjustments and deep tissue work, coupled with physiotherapy modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, orthion tables, moist heat and cryotherapy. But nothing helped, in fact my pain was getting worse and worse with every treatment, and I was becoming less and less mobile, the pain had controlled my life, and it wasn’t just a pain, and it was radiating to my legs….
What I have learned is that some people suffer from this temporary problem with mild to moderate pain, while for others life comes to a complete STOP! And that’s where my life was……. like many other patient I have develop chronic pain after trying months of different treatments, and I fund little to a no consistent relief from my pain, there for I was unable to return to work, or to be active, I was in bed miserable, I could not walk again without the pain, I was controlled by a Monster named Pain!.
It is very scary, because many people who suffer from pain that controls their life usually departure all their life style, if it’s from work, career, family function, and instead they live surrounded with pain.
Now, let me tell you a little bit about pain as a result of injury or aging… What is Sciatica? It is a pain that the patient feels along the sciatic nerve. The Sciatic nerve runs from their lower back, down towards the back of the leg, to the bottom of the foot, the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. Pain results when this nerve is irritated or compressed. The spinal sections it originates from include L4, L5 or S1.
Now after the MRI, It was found that my pain was caused by assumed sciatic nerve pressure from bulge, diagnosed Bulging L5 / S1 disc.
Any ways, I was suggested to do cortisone/steroids shots to relive the pain every two weeks and if that didn’t help a surgery was a recommended.
But what I didn’t know was how my mind functions…. something I become familiar with time…at the time I refused to get any injections, why? Because all my life I had needle phobia, the correct term for what I’m describing is Belonephobia, which is Greek for “Fear of Needles”. And thanks to my phobia at the time, I am today a walking prove, pain free and yes free of Needle phobia.
Three days from the day I was recommended to do the steroid injection and the possibility of back surgery, I came home crying. What is Sciatica?   Definition Sciatica nerve which originates from the buttock or gluteal area, is subjected to injury or irritation causing sciatica nerve pain. Do you have any tips on how to write characters with scoliosis in a respectful/accurate way?
Thank you so much for asking! I smiled like an idiot when I saw this ask. :) Let me preface this by saying that scoliosis can vary a lot from person to person depending on the severity of curvature, location of curvature, treatment methods, etc. So I think that, as with anything really, getting a wide range of viewpoints and voices on the issue will make it easier to write! Honestly just scrolling through the scoliosis tag on tumblr will give you a good sense of what it’s like for some people too. With that being said, I’ll talk a bit about my experience, and how I wish that characters with scoliosis were portrayed. Just know that my answer is far from universal amongst those with scoliosis. Also, medical treatment where I live is pretty shitty so I may have some other undiagnosed stuff that I’m attributing to scoliosis who knows lol. And I’m still learning a lot about it myself! Ok, with that caveat out of the way, here we go!

Also, for those who don’t wanna read about my experiences with scoliosis, if you scroll down there’s 13 tips on how to write characters with scoliosis (a lot of these tips apply to chronic pain in general tho). :)
To talk about my own experience a bit, I was first diagnosed with scoliosis when I was about 10 or so. When I was first diagnosed they told me it was minor and just to watch my posture. Scoliosis runs in my family but for most of my family members it’s pretty mild so I didn’t worry about it and went on my merry way. In hindsight, not the best way to deal with that but ah well.
Flash-forward to college. I had been having back pain and headaches for awhile, but I just figured it was studying for prolonged periods of time, carrying a heavy backpack frequently, and not watching my posture when I studied. I never connected it to scoliosis because I hadn’t had a check-up since that first diagnosis. Again, not the best idea but life happens.
I just finished my junior year in college, and I have had almost non-stop doctors appointments all year. It started after I had some sharp pain in my lower back, and got x-rays to see what was going on. Several doctors appointments and an ER visit later I find out that my scoliosis has gotten significantly worse, and that I have a fractured L5 as well. One thing I don’t see mentioned a lot with scoliosis is that it significantly weakens your spine (usually lower) because your weight distribution is thrown off. I had a job that involved some pretty heavy lifting, and voila fractured L5. 13/10 would not recommend btw.
My curvature (I can’t get consistent answers from doctors) is somewhere in the 20′s in my lumbar region and in the upper 20′s/lower 30′s in my thoracic region. At least with the neurosurgeons I’ve spoken to, they don’t consider you a candidate for surgery until the upper thirties or forties, unless you have significant neurophysiological symptoms. Treatment options vary widely depending on where you live, what you can afford, and what your doctor will give you a referral for, but most doctors will recommend physical therapy off the bat. To my knowledge, most doctors do not recommend bracing anymore, though I think in children that might be different (not so sure on that). So currently, I am waiting on an appointment with a pain management specialist and will go from there. 
Even though the curvature in my spine is relatively minor, I still experience significant symptoms. Some of these symptoms include sciatica, pinched nerves in my arms, legs, and back, muscle spasms in my upper back and neck, swelling of my hands and feet, and numbness or pain in my hands and wrists. Also, because my spine curves more in the upper portion of my back, my left lung cannot expand as much as my right lung. This isn’t always a problem, but I get shortness of breath pretty easily, and any respiratory infections make it super hard to breathe properly (pneumonia sucks a butt). There’s also the obvious bit of scoliosis where I stand a little crooked. Another thing I think that not a lot of people know is that how “lopsided” you are can vary from day to day. This doesn’t mean that the curvature is changing day-to-day, but the muscles may be more relaxed or tightened on some days.
So that’s my experience pretty much (bless you if you read all that!). But, to show an example on the opposite end of the spectrum, my friend had (I think) a 30 degree curvature in the thoracic region and 50 degree curvature in the lumbar. He had immediate corrective surgery (I’m not sure exactly what kind) and now aside from the scar on his back and that he looks like a table when he bends over (his words lol i’m not being mean) you would never know. And even weirder, he had no significant symptoms before his surgery aside from occasional sciatica. So your symptoms don’t necessarily depend on the degree of curvature, where the curve is located has a lot to do with it. Typically, more curvature in the upper spine is more painful but that’s by no means always the case.
Ok, so how in the heck does this all apply to writing characters? I promise it does, I’m not just rambling (well, maybe haha).
13 Things to Consider When Writing Characters With Scoliosis:
Their symptoms may vary from day to day. This may mean that some days they can do activities like running or baseball, and other days they can barely type or walk without pain.
They may have no, mild, or severe symptoms, depending on the location and severity of curvature, and other factors.
What is medical care like where they live? Dealing with doctors, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, etc. is just a part of having scoliosis, and very often an incredibly draining aspect. This is especially true if you have anxiety or other factors that make going to the doctor even more unpleasant.
Were they misinformed about scoliosis? Unless you go to someone who specializes in scoliosis treatment, you’re probably gonna get inaccurate information about something. For example, I was told constantly as a kid to watch my posture. Yes, this can have an impact, but more and more research is showing that scoliosis in many cases is influenced more by hormones (especially in teenage years) than posture. There’s also more egregious examples of this, such as a neurosurgery PA who recently told me not to ever use CBD to alleviate pain because it’s a “gateway drug.” This is literally impossible. So for writing, this could translate into frustration or even anger for your character. But it could also make for some funny situations later! I wrote down everything that crazy PA told me and it still makes me laugh from time to time.
Don’t give them a back-breaking job. It will literally break their back lol. I’m not saying they can’t be active, but if someone is impacted by scoliosis on a daily basis they probably aren’t working as a professional wrestler. Or maybe they are, and your story is trying to explain how that works lol
What do they do to manage the pain (if they have it)? For me, the symptoms are typically inflammatory in nature so things like ice, heat, turmeric tea, and anti-inflammatory medications help relieve the symptoms. This is one of those things where getting other viewpoints is good though too!
Is their spine visibly crooked? If so, are they self-conscious about it? This varies a loooot, and may even vary with symptoms. For example, maybe some days when the pain isn’t bad they wear a cute dress that shows their shoulder-blades. But then when the pain is bad, they just want to look like a hobo. I say this from experience lol.
Have people treated them differently because of it (positively or negatively)? Some people may experience bullying if their scoliosis is more visible, especially as a child. They may also be treated differently by adults, who are trying to look out for them, but nevertheless it still makes them stand out from other kids.
Do they make jokes about it? For example, I can be found frequently saying “my spine said yeet!” or “straight spine? idk her” or my personal favorite “my spine is about as straight as I am.” Scoliosis sucks, but living with it you learn to find humor in it too.
Are they going to get surgery for it? I can’t speak on this part since I haven’t had surgery, but I would imagine that there is a psychological aspect to this that you would want to mention for your character, as well as any logistical aspects like finances, dealing with trash insurance companies, etc.
How does scoliosis impact their mental health? This is one of my pet peeves, and it’s entirely founded in a lack of resources and education, so I’m not aiming this at anyone specifically. But scoliosis does impact your mental health, especially if you have pre-existing conditions like anxiety or depression already. It can be incredibly depressing to want to do something as simple as going for a walk, but you’re in too much pain. It can also really impact anxiety. For example, when I found out about my curvature change in college I had one of the biggest anxiety attacks I’ve ever had. There is also the added issue of not being able to breathe properly at times, which can make a panic/anxiety attack much worse (in intensity or duration). Of course, mental health issues can also be exacerbated by the environment you’re in, so that is definitely something to consider for your character.
What was their diagnosis like? What factors impacted their ability to get a diagnosis? Lack of adequate medical care or having crappy insurance is a huge problem, and it makes it really hard or even impossible for some people to get a diagnosis. And for most neurosurgeons or specialized treatment facilities you have to have that diagnosis and referral for them to be able to do anything. There may also be aspects of your character’s home life that prevents them from getting a diagnosis. Do their parents think they’re faking it, or that they just need to sit up straight? Is your character trans, and/or wears baggy clothing? I’ve heard several stories of undiagnosed cases because of this, so it’s something to consider.
Ok, I think this is the last thing (huge huge thank you to anyone still reading this!!). But please, if you’re writing a character with scoliosis, or any chronic issue/disability for that matter, avoid the trope of you’re still beautiful to me/you’re beautiful anyways/I don’t see your disability. Some people might not get what I’m saying here, so let me explain a little. If you have a character with significant scoliosis, to the point it impacts their daily life, and they meet another character (potential friend, love interest, whatever) and this new person grows to love them in spite of their scoliosis/disability, that is a huge red flag. It implies that they are seeing them through a lens of not having the disability, and they love that version of your character. But that is not your character in reality, because your character in reality has a very real disability. In general, just try to avoid the “I don’t see __,” in writing and real life. That could be applied to a disability, or the character’s race, sexuality, etc. In all cases, it dismisses a fundamental part of who that character is, and what experiences have shaped them into who they are. If your character has scoliosis and it has shaped who they are, it is important for other characters to recognize that as well, otherwise they aren’t really seeing that character in their “full glory,” if that makes sense. I’m rambling a bit at this point and I’m sure there’s other posts that make this point better than I have, but the takeaway is just please don’t write scoliosis as “you’re beautiful anyways.” Scoliosis or no scoliosis, it’s just “you’re beautiful.” Full stop. But part of how your character may come to recognize that beauty within themselves, or how others see it within them, may be influenced by their experiences with scoliosis.
Phew, I did not expect that to get so long but it’s a topic I’m passionate about and I haven’t seen information on scoliosis geared towards writers before, so hopefully this will help! Again, a lot of this is based on my own experiences so please do not take any of this as a universal guide to scoliosis, it definitely isn’t. so... 2021 isn’t off to a great start...
Sometime in February 2013, after a few months of foot pain that I attributed to my regular neuropathy, I looked down one night and realized my foot looked deformed. It’s funny. I remember other life changing dates, Dec 13, 2012 and August 3, 2013 that were part of the year from hell, but not the exact day that I had Charcot. However, from that unknown date, my wayward foot and I have been through a lot. That single day profoundly affected my life beyond compare. There have been numerous bouts with pressure sores, multiple trips to the wound clinic, and not a single day where I didn’t express my extreme hatred for the boot.I had never heard about Charcot. It was always watch for sores, etc, for diabetic care. Nobody told me that the neuropathy could lead to… ugh.
Everyone kept telling me I was lucky I still had my foot, and I would parrot that back out. I was never so sure.But I did what I needed to do to keep it.It was almost a year since my last sore. I have worked hard to keep the callous on the bottom down, to keep it healed, and dang it, it was looking good. Then about 2 weeks ago, I got a sore. Not on the bottom, but on the side. And it went downhill from there.
I have wound care supplies that the clinic had ordered for me, so I could change dressings myself. I dressed it and made sure my retired wound care clinic nurse saw it and knew what was up. The following Saturday, January 16th, when I changed it, it was worse and there were a couple new sores on the side. She said it was time for help. I agreed and planned to call my doctor on Monday and get a referral to the wound clinic. Well…Sunday morning I woke up sick, vomiting and feeling weak. No fever, no body aches, no chills. Maybe it was just something didn’t settle, isn’t that what we all say? Basically slept til Monday. Felt better, but slept all day Monday, too. Called doctor. Had crackers and chicken noodle soup. Had not thrown up since initial time Sunday. Tuesday I woke up and felt pretty good. Had toast with peanut butter. Didn’t last long. I didn’t throw it up but I felt horrid all of the sudden. Foot is oozing. Yucky oozing.  Called doctor again. Went to sleep. Woke up to message that said I needed to go to ER.
End up going by ambulance. Sister was going to take me, but didn’t think I could walk all the way across hospital. I no sooner got on gurney than I tossed my cookies again.
At ER by about 4 pm. That’s important, because the next 16 hours or so is a flurry of activity. My foot is infected. Not a little infected, big time infected. A little before midnight, I am on my way to Erie in the back of an ambulance. At least this time, it didn’t break down.  By 1 am we are there and I’m getting acquainted with Derek and Abraham my very nice nurses. By 2 am I am visited by the on-duty doctor. She is very nice. She looks at foot which is not pretty and says she has seen much worse. Also, x-rays from Titusville show infection is NOT into the bone. Yay. They did maybe show a couple of pockets of pus under the skin.  She schedules an MRI.About 4 am I’m in the MRI machine. They are much more details than x-rays.About 5:30 am, the doctor comes back in. It isn’t good. This are multiple pockets of gas, commonly known as gangrene, almost to my tibia. There is no way to treat it that will save the foot. The vascular surgeon and podiatrist will be in to see me.
Well… fuck. I’m in shock. 
Of course, it’s up to me, but it’s the problem foot or the rest of me. I call home and let them know the news. Oh yeah, that’s right. Stupid Covid – no visitors, so I am all alone.And scared shitless.About 6 the podiatrist is in and explains in detail what is going on. Gross, gory, I won’t go into it. For the next two hours I worry.
Vascular surgeon comes about 8 am. Come on, it’s no choice and it really can’t wait. They book the OR. She and I have a… um… discussion about what my level of consciousness will be. It’s a bit heated. Remember the heart cath with no sedative at all… hey… Beth, hold your beer. At 9 am it’s off to the ER. I am freaking because I have not really had much explanation of what’s going to happen.I meet the anesthesiologist. I explain my very rational, irrational fear of anesthesia. Hear are my alternatives. This won’t work, that won’t work, forget this…. Gee thanks Doc. We come down to the anesthesia or a nerve block. Risk there is nerve damage. In my brain, that’s a lot less than the irrational fear. I go for that. He agrees. My anxiety drops.He does the nerve block on the femoral nerve and the sciatica.   
I get wheeled into the OR, leg feeling nothing. Me, wide awake.What a trip.
The end result is that from Saturday the 16th – foot doesn’t look good, but not the worst I’ve had – to Wednesday the 20th… amputation.
Life moves fast. 
After a shit ton of IV antibiotics, they did a below the knee revision amputation on the 25th.  No signs of infection.  Yay.  Following a stint in rehab at the Titusville Hospital, I am home again at my mothers.  I have a way to go, but all is looking good for a prosthesis and an active life again... without that damn boot.  I am okay with this.  This is good.  For the best.  
I haven’t, however, written or drawn much since before Christmas.  Makes me wonder just how long infection was festering.  Anyway... I am feeling much better so updates, new stories, should be on the way.
