So like, the Reddit strike going on right now, yeah? I've been seeing a lot of people comment on how they appreciate the protest and then go on to say that this has the notable downside of them constantly looking up questions and not being able to easily find the answers because all of the easily-findable answers are exclusively on Reddit. I am not sure if most of the people making this observation are within the line of thought of "man, maybe this protest isn't such a good idea after all" or "man, it really sucks that we've let the internet get so consolidated," and I'm really hoping its the latter.
Like, all of this? This right here? Reddit making a shitty, anti-consumer grab for money and control over how people are allowed to access the information on their servers, and the website going dark in protest causing tons of people to not be able to access important information? This is exactly what people mean when they say that it's bad that the internet has shrunk down so much and is mostly comprised of, like, 10 websites. It's a fucking problem that one company making one bad decision and causing their website to crash and burn can jeopardize so much of humanity's cumulative information.
This two-day glimpse into the internet without Reddit is the warning shot. Imagine what will happen if Reddit actually goes down for good for one reason or another one day. Imagine what will happen if/when Discord or Fandom bites the dust, or gets rendered practically-unusable without paying an ever-increasing premium because they're owned by blood-sucking corporate leeches.
Another big thing is Twitter clamping down really hard on your ability to DM people if you don't have Twitter Blue. If this goes through, it'll put a ton of artists and sex workers who rely on Twitter DMs for their business operation into a shitty situation. Now, obviously, it's not gonna be the end of the world for them, but once again, it feels like a warning shot to me. Twitter is a sinking ship, and unless something changes and it starts to course-correct, I worry that it'll go under and all of the creators who rely on it will suddenly be in an extremely precarious situation.
These are the sorts of things that we, as the users of the internet, need to seriously think about as time goes on, and if we don't find an adequate answer sooner, we're going to pay for it later. I still hold that the best solution is to start making and using more individual, niche websites. Things like Twitter, Reddit, Discord, etc. have their place, of course, but I seriously think a lot was lost through the death of things like individual forums and the existence of many different wiki-hosting sites.
We need a concerted effort, not just on the side of larger creators, but on the users themselves, to stop exclusively using these larger websites and support the creation and growth of smaller, more niche websites, and prevent a catastrophe before it actually happens. I simply hope that people with larger platforms than my own pick up on all this and start talking about it and swaying people to act sooner rather than later. I know it's possible to correct the problem of the mysteriously tiny internet before a modern Library of Alexandria moment happens, I just don't know if that correction will actually happen in time.

Hello all. In case you've been unaware, recently tumblr has begun rolling out a partnership with Midjourney to scrape the entire website and its users' posts for their AI training. This includes peoples art, and probably also writing and photography. Anything you've posted the company may use for training, and you are opted IN by default.
Obviously this blog has been inactive for quite a while now, and no new art has been or will be posted here, but this puts me in a difficult position. I'm not sure exactly what I'm gonna do with this blog from here on. Some people have recommended editing posts to put a glaze filter over old art so that it's unusable, but I have many hundreds of posts, not all of which are tagged, and I'm unsure whether the AI training has already gotten a hold of them or not, making the potential filter useless. Not to mention the reblogs that already exist of the old un-glazed artwork.
I considered deleting everything, maybe even the blog itself, but that idea...sucks. I like the idea and the feeling that though I'm not active, my art is still out in the fandom tags somewhere, and that I have had an effect on the fandoms I was in and shared my art with. And again, the reblogs still exist, so I'm not sure what that would mean in terms of AI scraping. My worry is that deleting my blog would only relinquish any control I do have of what is done with my art.
As it is I'm kind of at a standstill. I was recently thinking over sharing my art again on other blogs, since I do miss being a part of that creative space. But now this change has kind of crushed that idea entirely. All this, plus the extreme transmisogyny apocalypse happening on here in the last month, and the seeming silencing of important movement tags like palestine, it really makes me want to ditch tumblr altogether. I've seen many people considering switching platforms. There's been a lot of markiplier mutuals specifically who have encouraged me to join cohost, I also have seen pillowfort as an option for others. But those platforms are new, kind of janky and will be hard to get used to for me. Plus, idk if I'm using them wrong but there's like...11 posts in each tag that I've seen so far, which kind of kills the feeling of being a part of a big open fan community I really love. Cohost seems like a nice platform, but if only 30-35 people move over, then it's really going to be a moot point. I wanna be where everyone else in the fandom is. I worry that this mass migration will only splinter communities, as we're all going to different places. I don't want to make 500 accounts on different platforms just to stay active and feel aware in the community.
My entire online social life up to this point has basically been on tumblr, I have a lot of blogs with a LOT of memories attached to them, and it would hurt to just drop them and move away.
Overall I'm at a loss. I enjoy sharing my work, my ideas and thoughts, I like being a part of these creative communities. But it seems like everyday the online space becomes more and more hostile toward creatives and fans, and much more advertiser friendly. One thing i never ever wanted to happen was for my art to be used for AI, and I naively thought that tumblr would be safe in that way. Guess not. I sometimes wonder if eventually all large social media will crash down and The People will dedicate to going back to personal websites and forums. I would enjoy a space where I could share my art on my own terms, and not have other peoples interaction with it overshadow everything else.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. For now I will be staying on tumblr until I figure it out, but definitely no more posting creatively. I want to try to keep my work up if I can. I would recommend on all your blogs going to settings and toggling ON "prevent third-party sharing for this blog", as that will let tumblr know you wish your work, including reblogs of it to be excluded from the scraping. I'm unsure how actually useful this will be, or how much the company will respect these wishes but. It's there. I would also love for you to come talk with me @boobookiss and, hey, maybe make a cohost account. I'm on there as boobookiss as well. I hope to keep touch with you all and see this little community stay together.

ANG F-16 pilots who were tasked to ram United Airlines Flight 93 recall being ready to Sacrifice their Lives on 9/11
“Sass would ram his aircraft into the cockpit where the terrorists were, to destroy the flight controls, I would take the tail by ramming my jet into the tail of the aircraft,” Heather Penney, F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot with 113th Wing of the DC Air National Guard.
On Sep. 11, 2001 then-US Air Force (USAF) Lt. Heather Penney, a rookie F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot with the 113th Wing of the DC Air National Guard, went on alert along with the whole US when aircraft hit the World Trade Center towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington.
“[I remember] how crystal blue the skies were that day,” Penney told ABC in 2021. “There are so many moments that I remember with such clarity that I can touch, taste, feel hear, smell every detail from that day. But what strikes me the most, because of how omnipresent it was throughout the entire day was the deep, clear blue skies.”
She recalls that “we knew that our nation was under attack” when the second place hit the World Trade Center.
By the time Penney and Lt. Gen. Marc H. Sasseville (now the vice chief of the National Guard Bureau, then a lieutenant colonel) got into the cockpits of their F-16 aircraft at Andrews Air Force Base (AFB), they already knew that hijacked aircraft had hit the Pentagon and the towers in New York. Their mission was to prevent further damage — in particular from that posed by United Airlines Flight 93.
Penney went to arm her F-16, but there wasn’t enough time. She and Sasseville had to get in the air.

“If we took off on this mission — Sasseville and I, he was the flight lead — and we were successful, we would not come home,” Penney said.
When Penney and Sasseville left Andrews, their aircraft launched without any missiles on board. They had embarked on what amounted to a suicide mission. Without missiles, the two pilots were prepared to ram their own aircraft into Flight 93 in order to keep it from causing any damage to the nation’s capital.
“We did not have missiles. We were on a suicide mission. And in order to be able to take any airliner down, Sass would ram his aircraft into the cockpit where the terrorists were, to destroy the flight controls,” she explained. “I would take the tail by ramming my jet into the tail of the aircraft, I would aerodynamically unbalance the airplane and tip it over so it would crash straight into the ground by targeting both ends of the aircraft. It was our plan to prevent any additional casualties.”
Flight 93 was originally supposed to go from Newark International Airport in New Jersey to San Francisco International in California. Just 45 minutes into that domestic flight, hijackers took control of the plane and redirected it toward Washington. The goal of the hijackers still remains unknown, perhaps it was to crash the plane into either the US Capitol Building or the White House. Sasseville and Penney were supposed to prevent something like that from happening.
“We had gotten a call from the White House Joint Operations Center, and they could see the picture,” Sasseville said in the article Guard Pilot Who Flew Over D.C. Following 9/11 Likened Attacks to Modern-Day Pearl Harbor by C. Todd Lopez that appeared on Defense.gov website. “They knew that Flight 93 had turned back. And they had basically asked if we had any airplanes that could go up the river.”

It made perfect sense what they were being asked to do, Sasseville said. The hijackers might not be able to fly by instruments and get the aircraft where they wanted it. But if they looked at the ground — at the Potomac River — they could use that as a guide to get them where they wanted to be.
“We knew what needed to be done. And there were no tears. The prayers, to be honest,” Penney said, were “‘Dear God, don’t let me mess this up.’ Because of how important it was and the potential consequences if we were not successful.”
Resistance from passengers aboard Flight 93 eventually thwarted the hijackers’ plans; and ultimately, the plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, about 130 miles northwest of Washington. All of that happened before Penney and Sasseville even got into the air — though they didn’t know it at the time.
“When you look back on the timeline, [the Flight 93 passengers] crashed their airliner nearly half an hour before we got airborne. I don’t consider myself lucky because what they did was something they never should have had to do. When they boarded Flight 93 that day, they were just simply going on a business trip or coming home from vacation… They hadn’t raised their right hand and sworn an oath to protect and defend like I had. I feel like we were a mission failure for so many reasons.”
While neither pilot saw Flight 93 on that mission, they did see the results of American Airlines Flight 77 — which had crashed into the Pentagon.

“The piece that I remember most was being at 6,000 feet, right there, smelling the fumes from the fire and looking down and seeing chaos, and just feeling sick to my stomach,” Sasseville said. “I wasn’t sick because of the fumes. I was sick because I knew that we had been attacked.”
Penney said she did not have the chance to reflect on what might have been. She “immediately moved to 24/7 combat air patrols,” flying from midnight to 4 a.m. for nearly a year, she said. Then, she went to train for combat operations in Iraq, where she served two tours.
After the terrorist attacks, Sasseville said, things changed dramatically at the unit.
The 113th Wing at Andrews was that it became part of Operation Noble Eagle, part of which is to protect the skies over the Nation’s Capital.
“We became part of the air defense structure,” he said. “And everything started to set into motion that kicked off almost 90 days of 24/7 airplanes continuously in the air defending the nation’s capital. So that was our reaction. We became part of Noble Eagle — we became part of the air defense structure overnight.”

...I could probably hyper-intelectualize it, but ultimately on an emotional level I feel really sick of threads like this and with similar sentiments because I'm really sick of people taking leftism's promise of a better; freer world for everyone and strangling it.
Like, it feels like the argument is "it's either put a resource bottleneck on science; technology; art and even the food you like even worse than under capitalism, or we keep doing child slavery and sweatshops and imperialism. Those are your only two choices"
And when you rankle at what would be lost due to the resource bottleneck, they say "Well, that's just capitalist alienation talking, what you like now is just a substitute for what you'd have under our system,"
As if fucking whittling and potlucks are a one-to-one substitute for video games or online conversation. As if any tool or artistic medium they don't personally get any use-value or joy out of is just a toy for spoiled Westerners.
I do not see how people who've seen artforms constantly wither and end up in a state of near death due to resource starvation think of that sort of resource bottleneck as liberatory; whether it be the independent websites after everyone lost their disposable income post-'08 crash and everyone fucking flocked to smartphones and social media, practical effects after CGI steamrollered them, 2d animation after CGI also steamrollered them, or basically any genre that fell out of fashion that's near and dear to you.
Whether it's a capitalist world and its money or an ecosocialist world and its resource caps, bottlenecks that starve creation will always still fucking suck! And I'm so fucking sick of being force fed that they don't, or that they're inevitable because apparently horizontal moves in how we do things can't exist!
And then whenever somebody tries to come up with other choices, or even just a means of preventing the losses they speak of in the transition to a more just world; they find another way to say that not only are those other choices bad, but trying to come up with them is a selfish brat who's just going to create more child slavery and sweatshops and imperialism!

Like, this is a post off the cuff, from the gut, take it as you will, but it's just fucking exhausting in a time where everything's going to shit that a lot of people professing the one ideology that's supposed to give hope are going "No actually, things need to be shit in our ideal world for true justice too" and following with "Well, I'm fine with it, if you're not, then you're just a selfish baby"
And it makes this broken; shitty world feel that much more hopeless, because you're stuck between the "resource bottleneck" and "Child slavery, sweatshops and imperialism" sides, both have a vision of your world getting smaller and more constrained, and you get the feeling that your life in the future is going to suck no matter what!

Storytelling Script To Screen: EVALUATION
For my project, Storytelling: Script to Screen, I was tasked with coming up with a story for an animated short film, pitching a synopsis with concept art to my peers, writing a screenplay/script and creating a 90 second animatic of my story.
I first started by doing research into different philosophies of storytelling and the different types of story structure in order to get a good idea on how to make a well-structured story for a short film. Looking to creators like Andrew Stanton and his rules of storytelling, and Dan Harmon’s story circle – a narrative structure formula created by Harmon loosely paralleling Joseph Campell’s theory of The Hero’s Journey. I analysed several animated short films, taking note of how they fit into or, in some cases, subverted the steps of structures like Harmon’s story wheel, what that said about the types of stories being told, and how I could apply these types of rules to my own story.
With these theories in mind, I brainstormed possible ideas. After collaboratively brainstorming with my classmates and on my own - based on the prompts unrequited love, mysterious portal, obsession, and heist, I eventually came up with two ideas: a short where a bird becomes attached to a snail who she mistakes for one of her own eggs, and a plot where an activist breaks into an animal testing lab and discovers something sinister. After writing a synopsis and artwork for both, I pitched my ideas to my class and received their feedback which was more favorable for the serpent synopsis. I ultimately agreed and chose the second idea, as I felt the story had more potential for interesting visuals and would convey a message I felt more connected to.
I then made a second draft of my synopsis that refined some details and cut down the length significantly. That way it could fit into a shorter runtime for my animatic short film.
After this, I used the synopsis as the basis of a script which I wrote on the script writing website Celtex. I then edited and redrafted the original script and created a final script in which I added more location detail and refined its format.
With this script in hand, I set about drawing some concept art for the two main characters; Sam the activist, and the Uktena serpent Sam frees from the water company lab. I also drew concepts for maps of the film’s locations, such as the interior of the lab, some thumbnail sketches for storyboard shot compositions, and created a Pinterest board to gather reference material for inspiration. I also studied material such as Peter Loomis’s book ‘Figure Drawing for All Its Worth’, as reference for figure drawing and drawing multiple figures in a 3d plain with two-point perspective.
For the animatic, I used the storyboarding program Storyboarder on my laptop whilst using my iPad (connected to my laptop) as a drawing tablet using the app Astropad Studio. The storyboarding process was going well as I drew each shot. But at some point, the program crashed, and I lost a few drawings, even though I was saving frequently, and the program was supposed to save things automatically. So, to prevent these shots being lost, I started screenshotting each shot and saving them to a folder.
Once the animatic was completed, I took all the clips and screenshots and put them all together in Adobe Premiere Pro.
Some clips and frames did not fit into the 16:9 aspect ratio. So I selected the clips, set the frame to fit to scale and the image fit the screen.
I also sought out sound effects on Pixabay (royalty-free sounds/music site) and edited these into my film.
Originally, the animatic was two minutes and twenty-seven seconds in length. But the brief specified the animatic be ninety seconds to a maximum of 120 seconds. So I edited down the footage. Eventually being able to cut down to one minute and fifty-seven seconds, including the opening title and end credits.
After this, I exported the video as an MP4 and uploaded the whole thing onto my Vimeo page.
I also arranged the animatic shots on a PowerPoint in three-by-three rows, much like a professional storyboard. This way, I could put these frames in my visual portfolio.
I’m overall proud of the work I’ve done for this project. I gained a better understanding of the animatic short film production process. I gained valuable experience writing a well-structured narrative through studying theory and other short films, writing a synopsis and a properly formatted screenplay. I learned to use new software tools such as Celtex for script writing and Storyboarder to create my animatic. As well as gain more experience with editing an animatic on Adobe Premiere Pro. All these programs I will use in future creative projects. Most of all, I’m very proud of the film I created through this project, and I feel it’s one of the most high-quality short films I’ve produced so far.
