How to proof

Proofing that an event Pokemon was legally obtained became a standard for many traders. As older as the event is, it is more valuable when it’s proofed. But don’t overrate a proof, because even a proofed event can be fake, cloned, edited, etc. That‘s why trade history is always more important.

But let’s start from the beginning. What actually is a proof? And what counts as a proof? Have different proofs different values? And how do I do a good proof?

To put it simple, a proof is an evidence that an event Pokemon was legally obtained during its distribution period and sometimes location as well. A proof shall show at least a clear hint of the redeemer himself - a note with his username written. The most common words used in context of proofs are „Video“, „Image“, „A Button“, „Wondercard“, „Farming“ and „Attendance“. But it is not limited here, there could be additional proofs as well like emulator screenshots, RNG seeds, etc. - it highly depends on the event and its circumstances of distribution.

Video - a video proof is the recording of the complete redemption process, from entering the code until the final confirmation of obtaining.

Image - same as video proof, but with single images and not a complete recording

A Button - this is a single image (and always part of an image proof) of the obtaining confirmation. The name comes from older Generation (6/7), which was the last image of the redemption process to press the A Button to continue. Nowadays A Button is the image with the text box to check the Pokemon team or Box (for Generation 8) or the last screen after the mentioned text box with the date and time stamp (for Generation 9)

Wondercard - Pokemon, which can be considered as an event, creates a Wondercard, which can be checked anytime after the redemption as long as the save of the game or the wondercard itself is not deleted.

Attendance - various events are only redeemable locally. An attendance proof is the evidence that the redeemer was actually there. This could be an image of a movie ticket, a convention pass, a selfie at the local convention, etc.

Farming - this is a collection of nearly everything if the proof of this exact event is not available. A farming proof should be explained more precisely in its context, e.g. it could be the proof that the trader was actively redeeming the discussed event type when its distribution took place or a generic proof or the proof of the same event, but with another time/date stamp. Farming proofs seem to be very weak proofs at first sight, but in combination of a good trade history, they can be counted as an adequate evidence.

Hybrid - a hybrid proof is a combination of two or more proof types to become in sum a complete proof. The most common example is a recording using the game console itself together with an A Button - using the integrated recording function lacks the hint of the redeemer, but if on the A Button proof is shown a note with the username written, both can be counted together as a video proof, because the date and timestamp match which results in the evidence that the redeemer actually took the recording.

After we clarified the different types of proof you may ask yourself what actually is the best proof. To make it short: it is not as easy as it seems. Video proofs are the hardest to fake and might be the safest, but if you have lots of events, you may need more storage, because the files are usually bigger. So you may only need Image or A Button proof, which are enough to proof that the Wondercard itself was not injected. Wondercard proofs are the weakest, especially if only one Wondercard is on the game save. Farming and Hybrid proofs highly depend on the circumstances.

Last, but not least, what is important if you wanna do proofs and it is completely new to you? I made a photo of my usual setup. I‘m using my iPhone to record the redemption process, but it could be a webcam or similar as well. My smartphone is installed on a stand with a ring light. Those are really cheap already and you don’t have an „earthquake“ during your redemption process. It has also the advantage that your hands are free, you can concentrate on the redemption and the recording angle is in that way that you are not seen in the reflection.

Beside your game console and the game, obviously, you need a note where you can write down at least your username. Next to your username, you can add the name of the event, the redemption date and, if you redeem multiple of the same event, an identifer (#1, ENG, etc.). Btw. It doesn’t have to be a piece of paper - you can do your setup in a more economical way as well with using a screen with all necessary information on it or a reusable paper, etc. If you do a redemption service for another person, you simply add his username as well.

One important thing, but usually underestimated, is the lighting. The best light source is a natural one like the sun. But whatever light source you are using, pay attention that you don’t have a bad glare on the screen which makes it difficult to actually see the redemption. You should also check the backlit of your console, you can adjust it in the settings to be brighter.

I personally use my iPad while preparing and redeeming. Its tasks are various like looking up the event name. I also organize my codes via a calc sheet which is shown on the display. This is completely optional, obviously.

As soon as you’re done with the recording, you need a storage system. It is not recommended to keep all proofs on only one device. I suffer from a big data loss and many of my original proofed events became proofless. It is better to upload your recording, maybe something what you can also use for proof exchanging when you trade. Many traders use Google Drive, but OneDrive or similar can be used as well. You can upload video proofs on YouTube and image proofs on imgur, etc. You have many possibilities.

Some additional tricks:

* Don’t forget to mute your video proofs!

* Compress your recordings to save storage.

* Always backup your proofs.

* Create an organization system that you easily find the correct proof for the event you wanna trade.

* Use the markings on Pokemon as a counting systen if you redeem multiple of the same type with the same redemption date.

In response to your questions about the timelapse videos, here are my two cents. Engagement doesn’t usually give you anything on tumblr other than a bump of serotonin, but it can lead to commissions or sales if you provide an easy link and are chill about it. But people are touchy about the word “engagement.” They want to feel like a community or maybe a cultural salon, rather than part of an extractive media process.

Your most successful process videos are going to show a satisfying finished piece at the end and give people time to look at it and go “wow.” So for most art some editing will be necessary to get there in a short video.

Another thing I should bring up is that the music you used for that sketch video was pretty grating. If you’re going to use music, i’d suggest finding something more relaxing. Just because the video is sped up doesn’t mean the sound has to be frantic.

Hi anon, thank you so much for your input! I really appreciate it, and I'm still getting used to actually getting responses, after trying to get it noticed for 10+ years (this isn't my first tumblr blog).

There's a lot going on with trying to share my art in the current internet ecosystem, probably something a lot of artists are dealing with. I'll try my best to describe what's going on on my end.

I don't like the term engagement either. I am trying to share my art through four main platforms at this time: Instagram, Tiktok, YouTube, and of course our precious hellsite: Tumblr. So my use of the term is more from the vernacular being used on other platforms, with what seems to be a kind of agreed upon use by artists of "this is what we have to deal with, so might as well lean into it." Maybe I'm mis-interpreting that (not surprising).

So far, Instagram is where I get my art noticed the most and has lead to the most sales/commissions/financial support. I think this has to do with the cat community that has formed over there. Tumblr definitely has its cat lovers, but I think a lot of them are over on IG so that they can follow internet cat celebrities and the like (I'm one of them!). So things like engagement and trends will dictate how I share my art with at least algorithm-led platforms. Also all of the cat people and friends I've met at shows regularly have Instagrams, not that that's a reason to be on there.

I agree that I should add time of the video at the end to show the piece to give it time to be seen. This can be easily accomplished if I make sure to take a photo of the art and include it in the video. I haven't had the best record of doing this due to my own ADHD and the pace at which these sketch paintings are being made.

Most of these recent sketch paintings were made back in August during CatCon on the spot! It's a crazy thing to do and I haven't seen anyone else do something quite what I'm doing, which is I guess part of my marketing for conventions and shows. So, sometimes I forget to take a picture at the end, but I'm getting better at including it in my process. And yes I call them sketches because they're fairly quick (I aim for 30 minutes for a 6"x6") and I don't get to add all the details I would like to if time was available. (I'm currently working on a new 3"x3" fully detailed piece of a famous internet cat, I've spent an hour and a half on it, and it's not done yet!)

Part of the timelapse question is not just to see what people prefer to determine how much time I should put into editing, but also how much effort I should put into digital storage. I have a couple different ways of recording footage, and the main way I've been doing so is with my iPhone. And so when I'm at events that I fly to, like CatCon, sometimes I'm having to transfer videos from my phone to an SD card until I can get home and get the footage onto a larger storage device. This can be tricky especially if I don't make sure to clear my phone storage before going to an event (something I'm adding to my list!) However, if I use the timelapse feature already available on the iPhone, then that makes editing and storage even easier for me later. I used this a lot with my Black Cat October series. But this timelapse footage doesn't look as good (maybe) and I don't have the option to do other edits later. Which then comes to the question for myself, am I really going to go back and make another edit for these sketch paintings? Perhaps the answer is timelapses for sketches, and full videos for fully detailed paintings.

And thank you for your input on the music part! The reason for the music in the last video was because of what's trending right now. Sometimes IG will save a copy of the video I posted with whatever music, so I had reused it in today's post. I think I'll make sure to use something more soothing/calming going forward just for tumblr, because you all have a special place in my heart.

Usually I'll open TikTok and do a separate video save to have a hi-res copy with music, but since I had recently created a shop on TT I only have commercially available music. Maybe I should take the shop down anyways, I'm really not sure if it'll help my art get notice or sell more stickers. I'd rather manage sales from my website anyways, but I feel like I should at least give it a try. You're welcome to tell me your thoughts on that!

I could go more into detail about my process for just uploading videos, but I feel like this is already getting TLDR. So feel free to let me know if you want me to ramble some more! I'd love to get input on that, as well as get an idea of what other artists are doing since I have no idea what I'm doing!

I learned how to make icons and wallpapers recently. This baby took me like 6 or 7 hours to make. But, that’s cause’ I’m a meticulously perfectionist when it comes to Video Editing and whatever you call this (Print Work? Graphic Design?).

So yeah, I might go ahead and do something like iPhone or Desktop wallpapers in the future. Maybe about characters or ships. I could even do commissions. But, I don’t think anyone would be interested.

So, I’ll just try and get back to working on my videos.

P.S — Sorry about my absence. But, my parents and I are moving to a new house. So yeah, I’ve been busy packing all my things that I’ve been hoarding for over 3 decades.

A Year with the X100V

On August 27, 2021, I was sitting on my couch playing with my Sony a6000 and a 35mm lens. The lens was new, which is why I was playing around with the camera. I specifically picked this lens to give me an inexpensive push into manual photography. The thinking was that if it didn’t work out, 🤷‍♂️ no big deal, I rarely used this camera anymore. I thought I didn’t care because the images from my phone were good enough and there weren’t circumstances that warranted taking my camera and lenses.

Sitting there, holding the camera, I realized I was trying to recapture what I had with the Fujifilm X10. That camera was between my “real cameras” when I had gotten sick of my Nikon DSLR. For all of the drawbacks of the X10, it was fun and I used it a lot. With the a6000 and that 35mm lens, it was obvious what I was trying to do.

Right then and there I decided to go back to Fujifilm. When I bought the X10 in late 2012, I didn’t even consider the X100 because it was too expensive as a transition camera. This time I knew that if I spent the money and bought it and I still didn’t go out then I was probably done with that kind of photography. I decided to sell all of my gear and buy whatever the latest version was.

Within an hour, I was back on that same couch with the Fujifilm X100V. Only later did I learn how insanely lucky it was to have found that camera. Regardless, I found it. And it instantly felt right to me. I mean instantly.

I decided to pick a different spot, at least once a month, and try to capture it. I figured this would give me good practice and a chance to see new areas in and around Denver. I wasn’t interested in going full manual mode just yet but I did want to practice my compositions. I’d leave everything on full auto and just think about moving myself to get the better shot. Photography 101, if you will.

So I did. And I did. And I did. And I did.

I was enjoying myself but my photography was hit or miss. I know that's the nature of photography but my stuff was all over the board. I was using Apple’s Photos because I didn’t want to get too bogged down in the process of editing photographs. Sometimes I’d edit the levels or play with the light but for the most part I'd take it as it came from the camera. If you look at any of those images, it's a testament to how wonderful the Fujifilm X100V captures color. 

This method of going out and shooting a location and then sharing my favorite 15 to 20 photos was hard to maintain. And it wasn't any fun for people I was trying to share with. Photographs are like dreams, people don't care unless it's about them or it's really good. Sharing to Flickr was cumbersome. Plus I was getting nagged all the time to pay for an upgrade and that was getting old. The fun was starting to get sucked out again, right around 6 months of owning this camera. The last album I shared on Flickr was February 20, 2022. 

Enter Glass.

I had Glass on my iPhone the entire time I owned my camera, signing up about a week or two before buying. I’d post shots from time to time but thought it was a little niche, maybe a little limiting in how I could share. But there were some photographers that would post images every once in a while that would blow me away.

Then on February 15th, Glass came to iPad.

I liken Glass on iPad to a good coffee table book about photography. I’m not there for the likes or the interactions or the vanity, I’m appreciating photography.

That was it. That was the thing that helped me get through my years-long slump with photography. I started watching YouTube videos on street photography, using Adobe Lightroom, color correcting my photos. I started using the built-in film simulations and dialing in recipes from Fuji X Weekly. And I began posting only what I thought was worthy of sharing, taking time to crop and fix and correct my images. I have found a passion that has long been dormant.

Obviously the camera itself isn't what makes people better at photography. Some of those great images from people on Glass were shot on iPhones. It's the work, the effort you put in to get the shot and what you want it to be in post.

But it’s important to find a camera that you want to use. I think we lie to ourselves about that part. We go into making a big-ticket purchase and we don't want to make a mistake so we do the pros and cons and we read the reviews and we just don't trust ourselves. I realized that I loved shooting with the X10 because I wanted to pick it up and use it. That's what I got back with the X100V. This quirky video on YouTube absolutely nails it. You want to use this camera.

The secret sauce this year was timing. I mean, the way the pieces all fell together is unreal. I was trying to make my old camera something it wasn't so I made a decision to try something else. I call a local camera shop and they have the camera I want in stock, a camera you can't find anywhere. And right as I'm making that decision, a new photo service launches that puts photography first. And then, just as I'm growing frustrated with my options for sharing, Glass makes an app for iPad that's so good it changes the way I want to approach photography.

Things I won’t buy in 2023

Every year, I make a list of items I won’t buy, and every year , I fail. No matter how much minimalism videos I watch , somehow, the urge to shop and buy just creeps in. But alas, trying is always better than quitting. Here is my list of things I will not purchase this 2023.

1. Make up - I already have a whole drawer of possibly every shade that I like. And when you truly think about it, I always lean towards the same shade when I purchase lipsticks or blush. I will only buy when I need to replace the ones that I have in case I ran out.

2. Skin care - Let’s face it, I am the laziest person who couldn’t care less about one’s skin. I know that I should really try to incorporate this into my daily routine. I buy lotion and creams but I’m just rushing my way out to the bathroom. This 2023, I should use them all up!

3. Clothes - The only shop I buy clothes from is UNIQLO. They got me all wrapped up with their minimalistic style and comfortable clothes. My entire closet is almost, if not all, made up of UNIQLO blouses, pants etc. The thing is, UNIQLO hardly ever change the style of their clothes. I *think* I pretty much have everything I need to mix and match and just like with skin care, I couldn’t be bothered by fashion.

4. Shoes- This 2022, I got 3 new sneakers. It wasn’t intentional, but one trendy style after another, and I was hooked. Given that these were gifts from my husband, at the end of the day, his savings are my savings as well. I think having three new sneakers this year is enough.

5. New Tech - ever fast-changing tech and gadgets make consumers keep buying. I still use an iPhone 11- which my husband bought me December 2020 and it is still working just as well as the day that I got it. I purchased an iPad 9th gen last December 2021 together with an apple pen that I use for work. This year, I purchased a kindle (best decision I ever made) and I also purchased a z  flip from a friend to help her out. Needless to say, I am pretty much covered already when it comes to tech . I am hoping companies will continue to support updates on older phone models so consumers don’t change their phones right away. 

6. Books - Buying a kindle this year has pushed me to read 61 (!!!!) novels this year. My toxic trait however , was buying physical copies of the books I loved. Sometimes, the thrill of going to the bookstore and purchasing new books also got the best of me. I now have an upper shelf that has about 4 stacks of books and a book shelf with even more books. (not to mention, more books around the rest of the house). I think it’s truly time to appreciate going digital in this sense. I love reading with my kindle and I love that even at night, when it’s all dark, my kindle is there so I can read under the sheets. Next year, I will try my very best to just use my kindle. I will still probably go to the bookstore to look at titles though. I do have once exception for physical books though- The Mina Lima edition of my favorite Harry Potter book- The Prisoner of Azkaban . 

7. Toys - I spent less on toys this year and even sold some this year. Frankly, I no longer have the space to accommodate useless stuff. I did receive toys this year though as gift from my friends and students. I think the only ones I purchase this year was the bearista bears from Starbucks! Hopefully they will not come up with cute and tempting designs this year. I shall resist and think 3 x before I purchase!

And welcome to my fave lookbook I’ve done in a longggg ass time! Yes, that’s partially because it involved making collages and doing the low effort work of scouring Vogue Runway for “research purposes”, but I promise, that statement wasn’t made out of COMPLETE laziness-I am super happy with it too. It’s been a good use of pre-part-lockdown-lift time in the interim between that brief period of Christmas celebrations and eateries finally fucking opening again because let’s be honest, I always knew I was gonna get distracted by oat milk vanilla lattes and veggie all day breakfasts once I could actually sit down with them at my fave local cafe. You could say I was very much operating on a self-imposed deadline.

The “what I would wear to sit front row at...[insert designer here]” TikTok/Instagram reel trend was something I wanted to get on board with ever since I first saw one and whilst the option of doing my own live action take-I really cannot bear the thought of having to edit footage of myself awkwardly attempting to sit nonchalantly in front of a camera for hours on end-was off the cards considering my complete lack of screen presence, I decided a Tumblr text post would work just as well, and if not even better in a way. Given the absence of the time limitations you face when you’re making a reel or a TikTok I thought it’d be cool to present the looks as part of a mini moodboard for each designer which adds a bit of context to each look even if you aren’t familiar with their past collections and establishes the general vibe of the brand I’m attempting to replicate. Not to sound snotty or as if I am the font of all knowledge on anything high fashion related but even with my amateur knowledge I noticed that as the video trend took off and was adopted by big name influencers, it became less about the average person putting their own personal spin on the aesthetic of the labels we can’t ordinarily afford and more about them building outfits that only vaguely resemble the general public perception of the brand around the real corresponding (and often gifted and thus inaccessible to someone who doesn’t makes thousands for a sponsored post) pieces they own SO I thought I’d take the trend back to its roots and get a bit resourceful. All that being said, in no particular order, here are the outfits I would wear to sit front row at Gucci, Vera Wang, Miu-Miu, Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana, Brock Collection, Alexander McQueen, Etro, Burberry aaaand Saint Laurent based on their past collections and guess what? They didn’t cost a shit tonne of money :-)

-disclaimer: will include an asterisk before any new purchases if from a high street store though to be honest, I don’t think there are any, we shall see! I do include where I got old purchases from in case anyone wants to search anything on Depop/Ebay-

1. Saint Laurent (formerly Yves Saint Laurent)

I know technically abbreviating Saint Laurent to YSL doesn’t really make much sense anymore given the brand’s name change in 2012, but I’ll always think of it as that in the same way I’ll always associate it with the slightly dishevelled yet simultaneously glitzy rock n’ roll aesthetic. The thing is, whilst YSL hasn’t done anything wildly out of the box for a long time, it’s rare they put a look on the runway that I wouldn’t wear; they never end up being a fashion week standout but the Parisienne take on grunge we’ve seen Anthony Vaccarello establish as his go-to will always have a place in my heart. 

2. Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen is a brand that is pretty much universally liked, from the historically extravagant and groundbreaking shows the man himself put together to Sarah Burton’s more toned down but still beautiful collections. Obviously I didn’t attempt to do justice to the former, so I tried my hand at putting together a look inspired by Sarah’s blend of delicate femininity and nomadic edge, and it went...okay? Like it’s definitely not my favourite of all the looks because it does give off slightly cheap copycat vibes buuut outside of the context of this lookbook it’s cute.

3. Brock Collection

Brock isn’t as well known a brand as most of the others in this list but I adore everything Laura Vassar Brock does and I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to try and channel the vision of one of the OG pioneers of the cottagecore vibe through my own wardrobe. I mean fr, this woman’s work as a steady provider of meadow photoshoot worthy dresses and corsets and skirts is v slept on and I will not stand for it. I will sit in front of a camera and then write a paragraph in my blog post begging anybody who reads to give LVB (an abbreviation I acknowledge is unlikely to catch on because Lisa Vanderpump anybody?) some form of acknowledgement for her services to period romance novel inspired moodboards everywhere.

4. Marc Jacobs

If there’s one thing Marc Jacobs always does, it’s COMMITS. TO. HIS. THEME. I just KNOW he has a secret Pinterest with separate boards for every fashion era of the 20th century and he is putting those boards to good use providing us with collections that are as immersive as they are eclectic year in year out. 

5. Miu Miu

We all like to talk about Bratz dolls and Monster High dolls and Barbies as fashion inspo but can we all focus on Cabbage Patch dolls for two secs so as to acknowledge the fact that a Miu Miu collection is basically all their fits grown up? And made boujie as fuck? If I want my fix of Wes Anderson meets Scream Queens (what a combo) inspired outfits, if I want prissy and girlish but also glam, if I want to look like a bratty rich girl whose one redeeming quality is her eye for vintage clothes, I know where to look and that is the Miu Miu section of Vogue Runway. 

6. Vera Wang

Vera Wang’s RTW aesthetic, a blend of the ethereal, ultra-feminine bridal designs she’s known for and British style punk rock influences, is something I feel has only become firmly established in recent years but it is everything I ever wanted and more. I always find myself trying to balance the part of me that loves everything girly and delicate and pretty and the part of me that would love to be in a biker gang and Vera’s collections are always an inspirational reminder of just how well it can be done.

7. Burberry

Now I’m not gonna lie, I’m not the biggest fan of Burberry but there have been a few looks over the past few years I’ve really liked and as someone who owns numerous trench coats, high necks and way too much plaid, I thought it’d be an easy one to replicate. Plus, if you can count on Riccardo Tisci for nothing else you at least can rely on him giving you some layering inspo which is very much needed in a country where it literally just snowed in April and where my plans for today have just been cancelled because the iPhone weather app did a Karen Smith and didn’t predict rain for today right up until it started raining so thanks for that one British meteorologists. Your incompetence strikes again.

8. Etro

Like with Brock Collection, Etro isn’t a hugely well known brand, but it is always one of my favourites-to add a spanner into the works of any attempts to cultivate a firm sense of personal style, I live for the ornate Bohemian look that Etro does so well just as much as I love both grungy and girly pieces, and so I really wanted to include a brand whose collections go down that route. It was a toss-up between this and Zimmerman, the flirtier, free spirit counterpart to the dark romance of Veronica Etro’s designs; her vision really shines through the most when it comes to the brand’s winter collections, imo, and given that I live in a country where winter or some weather state resembling it does seem to take up 70% of the year, I did decide on channelling her work rather than that of the equally talented Nicky and Simone Zimmermann this time round.

9. Dolce & Gabbana

D&G is a brand I felt really conflicted about doing-I don’t include their current collections in my fashion week reviews based on the actions of designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce over the last few years because I don’t want to mitigate the collective effort of fashion critics to push them towards irrelevancy. Though people like to claim the brand has turned a corner since Lucio Di Rosa was brought on board as the manager of celebrity and VIP relations last year (they are as prolific a force on red carpet fashion as ever), we haven’t seen any real meaningful apologies or reparations made by Dolce and Gabbana themselves which once again leaves us in the all too familiar quandary of whether or not we can separate the art from the artist especially when it is far too much of a simplification to only credit the two men for their work given there’s a whole design team behind them. There are a LOT of shitty people working in fashion, the whole industry is a bit of a cesspit if we’re honest, but I don’t think that should stop us from at least being able to appreciate old collections if we make sure we aren’t engaging in any kind of promotion of current works whilst doing so. D&G are a brand of high highs and low lows, with looks that range from hideously ugly to showstoppingly beautiful in a single show-when the looks are good, they are GOOD-and their presence in the fashion world is most definitely felt whether we want it to be or not. It would just be shit to refuse to recognise the existence of some real iconic runway moments, the practical work that went into the ornate detail and opulence that helped cement D&Gs place in sartorial history, the styling that’s made goddesses and fairytale queens out of modern day women as they’ve glided down catwalks, the far more extravagant and, let’s be real, sexier version of our world D&G shows have transported us to in the past. Will I talk about D&G ever again? No, and if you Google the scandals their brand has faced over the past few years, there are more than enough reasons why, but just this once I did want to pay homage to some of the collections, the snippets of which I saw on my Tumblr dashboard back when I was about 13, that first got me into fashion.

10. Gucci

Now last but, if you ever read any of my fashion week reviews (the likelihood of someone actually having read one of them and reading this is incredibly, incredibly slim lol, I wouldn’t read me either) you’ll know, definitely not least, is Gucci because Alessandro Michele comes through every!! single!! time!!

The man is truly the king of quirky throwback maximalism and it hurts my heart that a lot of people seem to think of it only as a brand associated with ostentatious displays of wealth. Year after year since Michele was made creative director he has released purposeful, fully-fleshed out collections which unravel themselves to us on the runway like time capsules containing the belongings of the rich and whimsical and yes that can sometimes result in outfits which are *ahem* a bit mismatched but it doesn’t matter because through fashion he manages to take us to a vivid version of the past where people could dress as freely and lavishly as they wanted to, into the wardrobe of a person unaffected by the side-eyeing of others. You get the impression he doesn’t design so much as plays around with some kind of enchanted dress up box and takes inspiration from there and to give that impression is only a credit to his talent-to make outfits so kooky and extravagant look like they were meant to be takes a boldness and genuine love for clothes that I do tend to feel a lot of the big name designers have lost in the pursuit of profit and the necessary placating of the dying customer base that keeps that coming in. Of course I'm not for a second saying Gucci does not care about profit, but at the very least, they have on board a creative director who genuinely has fun with what they’re putting out there and wants to make a statement too and that really shows; you can rest on your laurels and sell tweed boucle jackets to rich old white women for eternity but nobody’s going to mention your brand name and the word groundbreaking in the same sentence ever again unless they’re talking about what it was a century ago, you know (mentioning no names...unless...did I hear someone say Chanel)? That feels like such a shady way to end, lol, but I’m sure said brand will survive-to be fair, they’ve been included in every other What I’d Wear to Sit Front Row At video I’ve seen so although I’m always slagging them off for doing the saaaaame thinggggg year after year, for that same reason their aesthetic is instantly recognisable and so will always be a source of imitation. There are obviously pros and cons to being a brand which constantly reinvents itself but I think it’s totally possible to do that whilst maintaining an overall mission, and Alessandro Michele’s work at Gucci demonstrates that with ease.
