"This is a fucking brilliant trend you're getting into y/n." A familiar voice came from behind you.
Shit.
You spun around to see Jimin with his calico ears pressed firmly down and back against his hair.
Staring at you with an expression of disappointment, his brows furrowed together and his upper lip turned up slightly in disgust at you.
“Jimin!” you yelled out across the pool of water between you.  He started to turn around and step away, shaking his head.
Your wings were fluttering before you even registered yourself moving over to him and you quickly put a hand on his shoulder and tried to gently pull him around to face you.
He flinched dramatically and recoiled away from you, but spun around to face you.
“What y/n?  It's not me you’re going to have to make excuses to.” He hissed out.
“I know that…” You muttered.  You had been hovering about a foot off the ground, now you were landing yourself slowly as you dropped your head to look down.  Ashamed and embarrassed.
“Oh...Right of course.” Jimin chuckled, though you could tell he didn’t think anything was funny. “You’re just here to ask me not to tell him.” He shook his head, and turned around again.  “Don’t worry.  You can deal with your shit yourself, that's not my business anymore.”
His words were so harsh.  You couldn’t tell if it was the hurt from him being so disappointed in you, or the fact that he was completely right that was making tears fall down your face once again today.  It was probably a lot of both.
And a whole lot of not knowing what to do next.
The thing you couldn’t understand though, was why Jimin was reacting so cruelly to you if he wasn’t going to go tell Jungkook.
Of all people he should understand how things like that can happen.
“Jimin…” Your voice was slightly hoarse as you spoke his name.
“I just wish if you were going to start breaking rules again you would’ve...considered me?” He shrugged as he kept walking.
Your body snapped into movement again and you sped up to catch up with him, looking behind you to see a very guilty looking Taehyung trailing not too far behind, likely trying to stay out of things in hopes not to escalate the situation.
“Considered you?” you repeated his words.
Jimin stopped walking abruptly, balling his hands into fists and biting down on his lower lip.
“You really are that dense huh.” He muttered.
You continued to stare at him blankly, waiting for him to continue. Not wanting to acknowledge his insult.
“What happened between me and you might’ve just been a dumb lapse in judgement for you, and maybe thats what this was with Taehyung too...but I loved you y/n.  A lot.  You…” He started to get slightly choked up and shifted his gaze away from you.  “I still love you...but you keep choosing everyone but me.  You put all of the blame of that mistake on me...but now you’ve done it again.”  Now there was no question he was crying.  Jimin had erupted into a fit of tears and without thinking you had your arms wrapped around him.
You held yourself against his shaking body as he sobbed, and his arms slowly made your way to link around you, wrapping the fingers of his right hand together with the left, locking in his hold on you.
“It was my fault Jimin...I’m so sorry I blamed you.” you whispered.
Jimin pulled back, wiping the tears from his eyes and shrugging.  “Whatever.” he sighed “I won’t tell.”
Then he looked over your shoulder, to where you could only assume Taehyung was standing in the distance watching this whole scene curiously.
Jimin then looked back to you, taking a strand of your blue hair and tucking it behind your ear.  “You can still choose me too.” he muttered, leaning forward and planting a soft kiss on your cheek before flying away in seconds, as if he’d never been there at all.
-----------------
Back at the camp you avoided Taehyung and Jimin as much as you could.  Jimin didn’t seem to give you any troubles with that, but Taehyung had managed to sit himself on the opposite side of you as Jungkook at dinner.  Causing you to be crammed between the two men as you ate.  You felt like you were going to faint from the awkwardness of it all.  You were relieved when Taehyung stood up and went to go talk with Jin by the fire for a while.
Jungkook turned to you and started to brush a strand of your hair behind your ear, to which you flinched away at.
He was almost startled at your reaction, but didn’t say anything.  Simply looking you up and down curiously before returning to finish his food.
“When you guys are done I have something to talk about.” Namjoon yelled over to the two of you.
He’d just taken a seat on one of the logs sitting around the orange flames he’d thrown to the pit earlier that evening.
In a few minutes you and Jungkook were the last two joining in.  Jungkook wrapping an arm around your shoulder as the two of you settled into your seat.  Taehyung’s frown and sad glances your way were not missed by you.
“So first things first, did we get enough material?” Namjoon spoke.
Your team one by one pulled up their screens to check their inventory, pulling out the shell metal that you’d all collected from floor one.
Jin stood up and went around one by one collecting them and storing them in his own inventory.
“37 pieces! I only needed 30” Jin smiled.
“Hell yeah!” Jungkook smiled widely, squeezing his hold on you tighter and pulling you in to kiss your forehead.   You smiled your best smile.  But, it was definitely a forced one.  Whether Jungkook noticed or not you couldn’t tell.
You felt so guilty, you’d been on that trip for him you were hunting down those items for him.
You almost told him right there what had happened.
But you couldn’t.  You weren’t ready to lose him yet,and his sweet happy smile and gentle way of looking at you.
“Next thing I need to talk about is a bit more serious.” Namjoon looked at Jungkook as he spoke.
You felt your stomach clench into a tight knot and your hands started to sweat.
Had Jimin told his brother?  Maybe Namjoon didn’t feel right about keeping it a secret the same way Jimin had said he would.
Maybe Namjoon felt that it was his duty to his fellow game designer and beta tester to tell him what you and Taehyung had done today.
You turned to Jungkook and started to open up your mouth to explain.
“So there's a new skill line being talked about.” Namjoon said before you could say anything.
Oh.
You felt a wave of relief.  Though you knew that was awful of you.
“A new skill line?” Hoseok repeated back confused, turning your gold staff over in his hands as he spoke.
Yes, you’d given your staff to Hoseok.  Only temporarily you’d told him.  You just wouldn’t be able to live with yourself if you’d done anything else but that when you saw the way his face lit up upon seeing it.  Then turning to pure jealousy though he tried not to show it.  You’d giggled and told him the two of you could both use it, and you’d let him hang on to it for a while until he could teach you how to use it better.  He was a better teacher when it came to this game after all.
It hadn’t let his hands since.
“I stopped by the library like I sometimes do on the way back from missions.  I like to check in and see if there are any new scrolls or texts out that could bump up your skill levels by reading them.” He explained.
You all nodded, listening and very much already knowing this about Namjoon.  He liked to think of himself as a closet book nerd, but it was very much out in the open.  He enjoyed going to the library because it was a routine of his in the real world.
When he’d found out that there was one here close by, you could’ve sworn he’d been told you were all getting freed from the game.
It was nice when players could find things like that here.  Things that made them feel real again.
“So I ended up running into a player there who’d just arrived from floor one today.” Namjoon continued.
“For the first time?” Jin spoke out shocked.  It was extremely rare for a player to be new to this floor at this point.  Everyone who was capable of moving up already had.
So, why would someone who was able to move up wait months to go through the portal…
Namjoon nodded at Jins question
“He was an older man, in his 60’s or 70’s at least.  And yeah, that surprised me too.” Namjoon agreed with the tone of the room. “I asked him why he was just now getting here of course. And he told me that he spent every single day since the start of this in a bookstore on floor one.  He actually ran it for a bit and has now left it to another player.”
You were even more confused and intrigued by Namjoons new mysterious player encounter.
“You said this had to do with a new skill line somehow?” Yoongi furrowed his brows, he was sitting with his head on his hands and elbows on his knees staring into the fire as he tried to piece together where Namjoon was going with this.
“Yes.  Getting there.” He chuckled at Yoongi. “So he was in that bookstore every day, reading every single book, even the ones that didn’t give you skills.  He just liked reading, and figured if he was stuck here he might as well spend it doing something enjoyable.  Slowly he started gaining his skill lines.” Namjoon paused “Let me tell you, I don’t think this man has ever been in a fight, but he showed me his skill tree, and I wouldn’t dare cross him if I were you.” His eyes widened, it was more awe than fear of the man in Namjoons voice though. “But, here's the part where it's interesting. He had a skill line that I’d never seen before, never even heard of before. It was called Strategy Skills.”
Your whole group looked back and forth at each other, scanning each other's faces to see if them, like you, had also been a stranger to this skill line.  You looked to Jungkook, (though it was hard to look at him) to see if as one of the game designers he’d remember anything related to it.
But he had his eyes squinted in thought, seemingly racking his brain for any kind of memory of a skill line called Strategy.
“Never heard of it…” Jungkook muttered looking back up at Namjoon.
“I don’t think anyone has.  And I think he's the only one in this game that has it…”
All of you were a bit shocked, and didn’t quite know what to say.  It was an interesting discovery, but none of you really knew what it meant.
“So...what does it do?” Jin asked.
“Well, from how he described it, it literally gives you hints.” Namjoon clapped his hands together.
Your group still remained quiet.
“A blue glowing path shows up and basically tells you where to move and what to do to win in any situation, battle, or puzzle.” Namjoon explained.
Your group's eyes were widening and nodding along with him.
“That’s actually really badass.” Taehyung finally spoke up for the first time in this discussion.
Namjoon smiled his way, then at all of you knowingly.
“Not just badass.” His grin was only getting bigger. “Guys, *any* situation. It tells you the path to go.”
You were all quiet for a moment until Hoseok finally shouted it out.
“Oh my god the volcano.” and all of you gasped with him.
“Exactly.” Namjoon smirked.  “ Now, the old man doesn't want to go himself.  He's staying in the bookstore where it's safe, though I tried to tell him he has the highest skill levels of anyone in the game right now.” he laughed shaking his head. “But it's okay.  Because he told me how to get it.”
Your jaw dropped, as did your whole party.
“For real?” your eyes were saucers at him.  As boring as it sounded, this strategy skill line might honestly be your team's best bet for getting out of here.  Flashy or not, this was a literal game changer.
“You have to read 1000 books.  Actually read them.  They can be books of any length so I’m going to try and cram as many in as I can starting tomorrow.  I’ll basically be living at the library from now on.” He chuckled.
“Doesn’t sound like tourture for you.” Jimin chuckled, knowing his brother's love for books.
“No, it's perfect actually.” Jin agreed.  “I’m proud of you.” He spoke sincerely causing Namjoon to look away in embarrassment at his brother's compliment.
"we'll do whatever we can to help." You smiled and nodded his way.
Namjoon returned your smile warmly.  The difference between the way you see him now and the man that kidnapped you at the start of the game was quite large.
As the months went on, all of you seemed to have changed from the initial rushed survival instincts and gone more into a relaxed methodical approach to the game.
The way you saw it, if you were only on floor two this many months in, you'd have a lot of time ahead of you.  No point in burning yourself out before even getting to floor five.
No, you had many floors ahead of you.
One day a few weeks back when you and Jungkook were out on a quest to find a lost item for an NPC you happened upon a small pond on the edge of the tree line.
It wasn't big or shiny.  It had a simple wooden bench and a few flowers and weeds next to it.
Jungkook had grabbed your hand and excitedly ran over to it, plopping down on the bench and pulling you down with him so hard your upper half fell into his lap.
You giggled as you looked up at him and sat up straight again, planting a quick peck on his cheek before looking at the small pond in front of you.
"It's so..." He paused, searching his brain for the right words to describe.  Instead he put his hands out as if to take a picture. "Normal?" He looked over to you, almost as if to ask 'do you feel it too?'
Staring out at this plain pond, with its plain bench that you could swear might give you a splinter at any moment...
"Yeah." You agreed. "This feels real.  Like actually real." You sighed and rested your head on Jungkook's shoulder.  He gently moved one of his hands to your thigh and started to trace tiny circles as he hummed a song.
The two of you fell asleep there in that moment, and when you woke up you'd realilzed that you really needed to make sure that you didn't forget to live while you were trying to survive.
You'd all seemed to have come to that conclusion at your own moments.
That the world you were in now could be yours for a long time, you might as well find moments to just sit and enjoy it.
You'd give anything to go back to that moment with Jungkook.
You glanced across the fire to see Taehyung staring your way.  But not at you.  He was staring at Jungkook, studying his friend's face in a similar way you'd been much of this night.
Likely trying to remember the moments before he'd hate the two of you.
You'd tell Jungkook tomorrow.  You had to.
Grabbing his hand and intertwining your fingers tightly with his, you looked away from Taehyung.  Jungkook might never understand but he deserved to know.
------
When you went to bed that night you didn't sleep.  Scared you say it in your sleep.
'I kissed Taehyung'
You clenched your fists into balls, biting your nails into your skin to try and direct your focus somewhere else, but it failed.
Jungkook sighed cutely in his sleep next to you.
Was that really what you were scared of saying.  Or was it the even bigger confession hanging in your mind that you were scared would slip out?
'I love Taehyung too'
