being able to sleep at all while in the Hells is a luxury very few can have, and wyll and karlach are among them

later, they eventually figure out that they can talk to Hope Houseofhope and have a place to crash on whenever they need. then they really have the 5 star treatment: bed, cuddling, the works. but even before that, they got to sleep, because they have each other, and they trust each other enough to fall asleep knowing nothing bad will happen to them

wyll would always fall asleep holding some part of karlach. usually her tail or her hand, but sometimes her leg, knee, even horns. he wanted to make sure that she would still be close when he woke up, and that if anything happened, he'd know; he promised her that zariel wouldn't touch her, and he takes that promise seriously. he will never, ever leave her side when she needs him, not even to sleep. he will make sure she remembers that he's here. always

(what he doesn't admit even to himself is that he also does it because he needs it. he needs to remember that he isn't alone, that he might be in the Hells but he's not abandoned to his luck, not a lost kid hunting monsters on his own without a father or friends or his own real name. zariel can't touch karlach and mizora can't touch him, and he's safe, and loved, and not alone. someone sees his sacrifice, his work, and makes sure to protect him right back. and he needs that)

karlach, in contrast, never held him close, because her fear isn't really that he'd leave; it's that he'd be stuck. she's scared they'd be ambushed and he would be held down by her. she's scared they'd be attacked and he would find himself stuck with because of her. and a part of her is terrified that he would want to leave and she'd be holding him down. wyll doesn't belong in the hells, no matter how much of a monster hunter he is; he deserves softness and happiness and she still can't forgive herself for bringing him into this, no matter how much he begged her to let him come with. ahe isn't afraid of him leaving as much as she's afraid of him being forced to stay because of her

what she does hold, though, is the acorn. she always keeps it on her, no matter what happens, no matter what else may be taken from her. even in the scorching heat of the hells, it is still perfectly, pleasantly warm. and wyll, who knows karlach hopes he will stay as much as she hopes he will leave, always plays with her hair, makes sure even in her insecurities she still knows she's loved, treasured. he might be petting her hair with one hand and skewering imps with the other, but he will still make sure that she's not just cared for, but comforted

they carve their own oasis in the hells, even before they actually have a safe place to go back to, just by being with each other. they get to rest, and sleep, and have softness, and love. who else in the Hells can claim the same?

My first time to go to the House of Hope (HoH) was when my co-VBBSP scholars in UP went to visit our friends here as part of our outreach program, sort of paying it forward. I remembered that the same scholarship made us read about paying it forward. And just this afternoon, i went back to HoH, already an alumna, but another student about to graduate, this time, with a Master’s degree. And just like before, i made sure i made a new friend. So here’s Mohammed, my friend, a fighter! I actually had my personal battles right now, but yours is bigger. So shame on me if i don’t smile as you do, take things lightly as you do. I pray for and declare your complete healing, Mohammed!
