I love your blog and all your horses! Especially Horsie, he’s such a wonderful young man. I hope he stays with you for a while, because watching him develop is so fun! And Hermès sounds similar in personality to my own gelding at times, except mine is much less fancy 😂 Though I have become quite curious about Vigo recently - can he really do full GP tests?? Did he have a show career before retirement? I would like to know more about this ridiculously talented swamp cryptid.

I’ll admit, I’m very fond of Horsie too, he’s too sweet not to love. I’d also like to apologise for any typos in this reply, as his gigantic ham face is occasionally obscuring my phone whilst I write and wait for the other two to finish breakfast.

Hermes isn’t as fancy as he’d lead people to believe - at heart he’s just a big idiot with more ability than sense 😂

As for Vigo, I think there may have been a small misunderstanding. You see, in France we label the most difficult tests of each level “Grand Prix” as it just means “biggest prizes”. For showjumping this means that you can find 80cm Grand Prix classes and for dressage, well, there’s a GP which is just walk, trot and canter. What I’m doing with the swamp monster roughly translates to US third level, sort of.

That said, I do think that if I’d had him as a young horse, after his career as a Mountain and Moorland show pony (as that’s what he was bred for) but before he ended up as a hard-headed pony in the hands of a string of inexperienced owners, that he could have reached GP level. Before old-age stiffness set in and his back became swayed, he would have presented a far prettier picture and found it much easier to cross over with his legs. He’s certainly got the power and patience for high level work, if not the eye-catching paces or true loading of the hind quarters of high level winners. His biggest issue would be (and still is) that he’s downhill and stocky, which means he has to work twice as hard to get the same marks as a better put together horse.

Vigo’s definitely my pick for a horse I’d like to de-age all the same lol. He’s 22 now and I got him back when he was 16 - from which it took me years to undo the bad bridle habits his previous owners had given him - and I really wish I could have had him at 7, after his 3 Pony of the Year Show qualifications. Now though, my only goal is to have fun with him. He’s proven his worth and enjoys a variety of disciplines at a low level whilst holding his own decently at dressage.
