So one of my friends and I were discussing how we would characterize certain characters in Hamlet were we to play them. And we came up with, imo, a really cool subtext to play with for Ophelia, Laertes, and Horatio.
Ophelia is, as in the text, Hamlet's current romantic interest. But Laertes had a thing with Hamlet before Ophelia. That's why Laertes warns Ophelia about Hamlet before they (gender neutral as this could work with a variety of casting decisions) leave in the beginning of the play. Hamlet fucked them over in some way.
Horatio, on the other hand, has been pining for Hamlet since they met in school. Nothing romantic has ever happened between them (or maybe it has, depending on the interpretation, but I like the idea of a one-sided pining situation, personally). But Horatio is the one left cradling Hamlet in their arms at the end of the play.
I just like this juxtaposition between the person Hamlet chose, the person he didn't choose, and the person who would never be seen as an option until it was too late.
I am a Hamlet-Horatio-Ophelia polyam truther because I think that Ophelia is necessary to get Hamlet (the world’s worst overthinker) and Horatio (who can hardly take a compliment much less ask someone out) together.
They both go to her (Hamlet’s gf, Horatio’s qpp) for relationship advice and she keeps setting them up on dates so they’ll just get together already.
This is all @cosmic-kaden's fault! They just HAD to paw Hux at me... They just HAD to hit me with my weakness! Knowing full well that my sorry ass would cave!
this is an i love you to me and art's AP lit teacher who was the teacher sponsor of the student taught musical art and i wrote/produced the year after i graduated/his senior year. she was an amazing teacher & she got a complete front seat to me and art falling in love & the early days of our relationship in a way no other adult in our lives did
for my mutuals interested in my England Exploits…. finally got to the national maritime museum today (saved the best for last), made a beeline for the nelson’s navy exhibit, and felt like I was seeing a celebrity
my takeaways:
it never really struck me how small of a person nelson was… it was such an experience to realize I was essentially standing at eye level with him while I was looking at his uniform
there was, however, a disappointing lack of Homoerotic Detail during the entire section dedicated to his death (which is to say they entirely failed to mention Kiss Me Hardy). they also just didn’t mention the gruesome fate of his body between his death and his funeral (which is to say they skipped the fun part)
I have so many mixed feelings about this man. what a guy
the 1787 uniform remains my favorite pattern but the 1795 pattern is a very close second
james clark ross’s sword! the one he held in the Hot Portrait!!
By the way every round I have a challenge of finding a new picture for Hamlet and Horatio since I haven't found a "perfect" one that I've wanted to stick with. Does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone know of a really banger image (either a production photo or a moment from a movie, although the former tends to have much better lighting) they could submit to me to use for their semi finals, and potentially final poll?
