Happy Melly Monday everyone!

Time for another commission blog. This time, it's from a newcomer. @monolithtk

At this point, it was sort of a given that I was going to commission this version of Melia for quite a while. Simply because this is the recent incarnation of Melia, and that many people have just finished with Xenoblade 3 as well as play through Melia's ascension quest in said game.

I found Mono mainly from a friend who was commissioning a whole bunch of Eunie art at the time, and he recommended me to them. It started when I wanted to ask them if they were comfortable with me commissioning a "spoiler hero character". Luckily, they were missing Segiri, so I was pretty much in the clear for another Melia commission later that week.

Nothing really much has changed from the sketch and lineart phase. But I should mention how I really like the sketch Monolith does of Melia. You can see where all the planning and work came in there, and it looks really good because of it. And when the art is transferred digitally, the lines become more thicker and more defined. Like Melia coming out of a comic book. It looks really cool.

As for the full art itself, WOW is it fantastic. Like I said, their art has a very distinct comic book style, but I feel like when it gets rendered with the lighting and everything, it just looks fantastic. Her glowing radiant wings are also fantastic as well.

Monolith currently accepts commissions through a Google Form that is pinned to her social medias. They do Xeno-styled chibis and regular chibis, headshots, and many more offerings. Along with discounts for their bunny OCs (she loves bunny characters) and other things. They are rather inexpensive, and they do a nice job when everything is done.

so i didnt finish this page due to stomach pain on monday so it wasnt done tuesday, so i thought, okay, well, lets get it finished on wednesday after i take my bro out for a birthday movie.

and then i got back, took a 20 minute nap so id have a little energy to draw comics! and then i woke up 5-6 hours later, at 3am. 3 alarms slept through (despite being a light sleeper) and lights still on. the 5 hours sleep each day took its toll i suppose, so i went back to sleep, so heres the comic today!!!

speaking of waits for comics! its time for the annual fucking off period! also known as "taking a break" like i do in december, buts lets be honest, i will not be taking a break. like always i will just be working on other things because i cant just not draw for too long.

hopefully this means i will be working on a buffer, finally. i will for sure be working on making chapter 1 book ready! if im very lucky i will get that sorted and ready before next febuary (got a couple large cons there) but thats a very generous estimate and assuming self funded and not kickstarter, but i can do that with some savings if i only get a small amount of books because chapter 1 isnt long. wish me luck.

so yes, this is the last update until january unless i end up making a holiday drawing who knows.

8. which of your own projects have shaped your writing the most? in what way?

i said surrender and a personal project, earlier, but tbh something as well. for the same reasons—finishing it let me see what i was capable of—but also because it like, really cemented to me the kind of stories i like writing. adventurous romances. 🥹

9. what are you best and worst at when writing?

the number one comment that’s shared with me, no matter the fic, is emotional! 🥺 which is a great compliment. 🥹 worst would be hmmmm. i think i have too many blindspots to pick what i’m truly worst at, in my actual writing, but i do struggle with starting. 💀 making myself sit down and do it. everything else—whether it’s like, clumsy characterisation or rushing things or whatever—can be worked on and improved, but an actual creative habit? ugh.

22. how much of your own self/experiences do you believe pours into your projects? if this differs per project, which projects have the most and least of you?

Ohh. I mean—they’re all different!!! Despite the genre—self-insert—i do try to make the Readers their own people. 🥹 But like, even their canon counterparts will end up with tiny mermsisms. 🥺 It’s hard to completely divorce your sense of self from something you’re creating!!! You can only create with what you know, you know? It’s like being given a box of crayons—those are your tools! So for me it’s like: I like flowers, I like art and comics, I like jewellery. I like flowers, so sometimes I buy them from the florist; I like art and comics, so I keep up with industry news and chapter updates. I like jewellery, so I followed some indie artists on instagram and saw their processes. Bam, we have our three Readers. I’ve worked in retail and administration and hospitality; so we’ll throw them all into service-roles. I like people who are kind, who believe in something, who love whole-heartedly—so we get our love interests. I’m a pretty passionate person by nature, with a lot of different interests, so they tend to manifest in the fics and plots and characters in a multitude of ways!!! I’ve been in love and I’ve been isolated and I’ve been held together by tape and rage and other people—i like action films and pulp thrillers. Sometimes people are nice to me when I’m out in the world, getting a iced coffee; sometimes they’re rude. It all goes in, one way or another. Mixed in with whatever the plot needs, whatever the characters need. Whatever would be the most fun or whatever would make the most impact. 🥹

Weekly Update May 3, 2024

Tomorrow I graduate and get my degree. I know most of what I post is art and music so it might be a bit of a surprise to some of you to learn my degree is actually in chemistry! I worked really hard for it but got all A’s and B’s this semester. Really sad my internship is over but I’m hoping I’ll get a permanent job like it soon. I’ll be returning to my lab job from last summer pretty soon, but I think I might have next week off, at least for the most part, so I can make up for all the art work I didn’t do this week.

The main thing I did was work on the comic. I can probably finish the page I’m on in one more sitting. I’d guess I’m still only around 11 or 12% done, but that’s fine, I’ll have much more time to work next week so I hope progress will be faster. If anything having more time will bore me, and when I’m bored I have to work on something. Last night I stayed up real late for an anime campaign game (worth it) and whenever it wasn’t my turn, I’d draw.

I also did a bunch of songwriting stuff this week, trying to work more with lyrics. BATB lyrics are probably 50% done, also threw together lyrics that maybe I’ll turn into another smaller song, or maybe I won’t. If I get that one done I won’t need to prepare anything elaborate for visuals like the others, but also it’s so half baked that I’m not sure if I’m going to invest more time into it. I haven’t touched any other music projects this week.

I didn’t do anything with animation this week. Not even writing. I’m planning to invest more in that next week, too. I’ll try to get back to actually making the puppet rigs next week, since having three things to alternate between should keep me from getting too bored. Also because the new FNF update has real fun animations and make me want to flash animate again. Again I’m not sure how much I’ll need to animate in flash vs CSP, but I think getting faster at rigs will be a good skill to have. Plus I’m getting attached to the Kyo design, I might pull a nem or neru and rename him and split him off into his own character. If I do I’ll post a little character sheet for him, since he’ll probably be relegated to music related projects.

Last thing: TTRPG stuff: playing in the campaign last night helped me finally get unstuck on the campaign I’m writing, for real this time. Plus, for the next session we have to make new characters and happened to roll one of my favorite words (three guesses what word), so I expect to get very attached to that character. At night and in the car ride back home on Sunday I’ll try to write more, although good chance I’ll just be getting that character sheet ready and then take a big nap.

Next week I’m going to rest first and foremost, but then I’ll inevitably get bored and put in a rotation of projects to do, and hopefully have more to show. I’ve done a fair amount of smaller doodles that I’ll try to trickle out this weekend, and next week I’ll try to throw together a flash puppet, get more storyboards done, and more comic progress. Not necessarily in that order of priority. And then for smaller writing projects will be more epithet work or more song lyrics if I’m ambitious. I’ll try to get a schedule together on Monday, maybe I’ll post it if it’s good enough. Bottom line is I’m going to try to get back to doing art projects right as soon as my health is back to normal. I’ll also be in an area where I can get access to produce as well, so I’ll try to eat healthier to boot.

Scheduled the appointment for my car to get fixed after that stupid hit & run accident I was in. The appt isn’t until October, but just having it scheduled and the rental booked makes me relieved

Bought a new bed for my dog. Maximum Coze!

Read Vol 7 of Tian Guan Ci Fu! I really thought it was the last volume… but nope! One more (I think??) comes out in November 😤

Read the comic, Semantic Error! I watched the show and heard lots of stuff about the comic, and I finally got to check it out. I like it!

Got my hair done! Shaved down the back and sides that were getting way too long, and touched up the blonde on my outgrown roots

Got my flu shot!

Started this Jujutsu Kaisen puzzle I got for my birthday while listening to my 2004-2014 Emo playlist! Still working on it…

Watched the live action One Piece!! Gotta be honest, I’ve never really had an interest in watching the anime. But the live action was really fun and enjoyable!

Went out to dinner with my spouse for our anniversary! We’ll have been married for six years as of the 16th 🩷 we went to Buffalo Wild Wings for wings, burgers, and beer lmao but it was nice to just be outta the house

Bought this cute lil Halloween bat mug! Ok, this wasn’t really something I planned on doing… but we needed to stop at the store after our dinner, I was tipsy, and I saw the Halloween decor from across the store lolol. I couldn’t just pass him by!

And slept… SO so much. I mean my sleep schedule has totally shifted… I’m now staying up until 3-4am and sleeping until 10-11am, which honestly is just as much sleep as I’d normally get. But then there’s all the lil nappy naps throughout the afternoon lol. Hopefully I can shift back to something more normal in time for Monday 🥴

If you don't mind me asking - how long on average does it take you to complete a comic page?

When my schedule is working properly, I can start it on Monday and finish it on Friday to post Saturday, one major process step per day. I couldn't give you even a rough estimate of hours though, because I don't often power through long blocks of worktime at once. After I come home from my actual job, I'll have the page open most of the evening... but I'm often juggling multiple tasks and just sorta wander between them.

The most effective setup I've had requires a buffer, which I haven't had in a while (hopefully when all the post-Kickstarter logistics are over and I can actually get back to drawing the dang comic!). But when I do, I can have multiple pages at varying stages of completion, and it really allows me to work on whatever I feel like doing that day, instead of being chained to the stage I have to do. It's the same amount of work in the end, but it feels easier.

I hope that at least sorta gets at what you were asking!

WIP of an upcoming short comic. I'll be on the countryside for this weekend (family stuff). But hopefully I can finish it by next Monday. ^__^;;

An Update

Hey- Just keeping y’all up to tabs as to my current predicament as of right now.  If you’ve seen the last post I made to @moontale-official , you’ll know that I went on a small hiatus due to my new desktop PC having some technical issues.  Currently I still have yet to have my computer fixed, and as of right now I don’t know when that will be. I am still able to draw from my laptop, but my project files for the comic pages I was working on are on the PC.  While I originally planned to double down on comics most of the summer, this sudden event made me decide to take some time off from that. Take the chance to let off steam. Apart from that, my birthday is coming up on Monday (along with family events the weekend prior). I also am taking summer school all July which takes up about 6 hours a day, five days a week. And finally, in mid August I am going on vacation with my family, which will last about a week. Also all the political and humanitarian disasters that seem have been occurring at least once a week so that is certainly taking a toll on my mental stability but hey at least NFTs are dying- So. Verdict?  Yeah not a lot of time for comics. BUT! I want to make it up for y’all by giving some smaller pieces of content, even if it isn’t all that much. I am currently writing a short story for my AU (blog to that can be found at the start of this post) which I hope to release around the anniversary of the comic’s first update. Who’s to say if I’ll meet the deadline, but I plan for it to be finished late July. Hopefully. God. Crossing my fingers. I’ll also try making some one off pieces of art to post to keep the tap dripping while I wait until I’m in a good enough spot to pick larger projects back up again. I was really hoping to start a new horror based short comic this month but it seems that will have to wait. But hey.  I’ll get the proper time I need to just. Think. And breathe really.

Regarding The Future Of Walk With Me And More! (Please read!)

I’ve been trying to ensure that this post is as easy to follow and understand as possible. Hopefully it’s not too long. I realize that not everyone will see it and I’ll probably get some comments asking what’s happened to Walk With Me. So I am going to try to explain what’s going on here. In addition I have some other things to say. So please read the whole thing. To get to the point. I’m going to be making some changes coming up. Changes that are looooong overdo. Please understand that running three comics, commissions, art, animations and more is very challenging and time consuming. Especially when I have constant real world distractions that pull me away from my work. Just to be clear. I am NOT stopping any of my comics. I am however changing how I do one of them. Denatured and Comic-Comic will continue on their regular update schedule as usual. Denatured post every other Monday, alternating weeks with Comic-Comic which is every other Wednesday. This is just as they’ve always been. Now as far as Walk With Me goes, I have one final page to complete for Chapter three, which will post to my Patreon in a little over a week, then to the public a month later as always. Once I am completed with Chapter 3, Walk With Me will no longer be on a regular update schedule of every two weeks. From now on I will be working on WWM in my spare time and will continue posting the completed pages as they are finished to my Patreon and Subscribestar. Once the next chapter is fully completed, I will then post all of it to the public in rapid succession. So again, just to be clear, you will still get to see it. It’s just that it will take some time before the next chapter is completed. If you want to see each page as they are completed, you can subscribe to my Patreon or Subsribestar and get early access as has always been the case with WWM. Why am I doing this? First: There are multiple reasons. To start. I’m tired. You may have noticed some comics have been posting later than usual. This is because I recently made the decision to never again stay up past midnight into the early hours of the morning, just because there’s a comic do the next day. It wrecked my health and I was doing it for pretty much no reason since very few people even cared. A mistake I will not be making again. My health is too important. Second: the quality of my comics has suffered greatly. I’ve reached a point where almost every time I have a comic do, I have to rush through the entire thing. It’s resulted in really crappy drawings that has not helped my comics to grow in the long run. Doing this will allow me to focus on one comic per week and I will be able to work on WWM at a slower pace where I will no longer have to rush to meet a deadline. This will improve the quality of all three of my comics. Third: By taking Walk With Me off a consistent schedule, I will now have much more time to animate. I’ve been wanting to do regular animation for a good while, but have never found a consistent enough schedule. So you can look forward to all of characters being brought to life more often now that I can. In addition, this will also help me to dedicate more time to Patreon and Subscribestar centered content. You may have seen my post that I did announcing the Faye’s Diary tier benefit. If you haven’t you can check that out in the link below. This is just one of the things I’ll be able to do now that I have more time. I have people who have been very patiently waiting for me to finish their drawings or to open back up. Unfortunately, I have had zero time to work on them do to unnecessary comic deadlines. I put in so much work and effort only to get little to nothing in return. That’s not to say that I do what I do for monetary gain or popularity. Even if I could, that’s obviously not true. But please understand it’s become incredibly difficult to do what I do when I don’t even see any growth. Now I’m about to ask you to do something that I have never in a million years asked anyone for. Mainly because I never wanted to become one of “those” kinds of people that routinely complain or beg for things online. There’s a lot that happens in my life that you don’t know about because I’m not the kind of person to share it with you. Mostly because I don’t want to annoy any of my viewers with details that they probably don’t care about. I’ve become increasingly frustrated with the fact that no matter how hard I try, no matter how much work, effort, blood, sweat and tears, I put into this. I grow at a painfully slow rate, or I don’t seem to grow at all. It’s like every algorithm in existence is against me. I’m not saying I’m the best artist in the world. I’m not. It’s probably just because I suck at everything, but when people who draw literal stick figures, shit post, and crappy hard core pornography acquire mass followings of thousands of viewers, you can image, this is very disheartening and demotivating. I know my art sucks, but I’m asking you my friends and loyal viewers. Help me to grow. Share my stuff. It might look like I have a large following to some of you, but I don’t. I haven’t really grown anywhere aside from DA and a little bit on FA. Everywhere else is near impossible to develop a following. 🍉 - favorite character/story trope

my favorite character tropes are either the "soft only for you" trope (because i am sad and lonely) or the "starts normal or even sweet and then hardens like a rock and kills people" trope. i love when characters have trauma that just... sets them free, i guess. they do things they could never have done without their past experiences pushing them.

story tropes? i am a fan of love in hopeless situations with hopeless endings, villain was the victim all along (bonus points of there's no redemption arc because i only enjoy depressing media), and found family. i also love when childhood friends are put in horrible situations (death games, dystopia, apocalypse, etc) just to see how they react and deal with each other.

out of my many fandom experiences, the first one that came to mind was clint barton/hawkeye from marvel comics. just seems like some shit he would get dragged into. from mha? deku would be caught on a monday night at barnes n noble in full all might cosplay, sadly.

ps: i hate clint barton in the mcu. they botched his character. also, i saw a deku cosplayer in barnes n noble once.

☘️ - do you enjoy mostly incorporating canon or fanon details in your work?

i like trying to keep my dabi as canon as i can. i feel like fanon kinda fucks up his character if taken too far. yeah, he does have a soft spot for a few select people deep down, but i think he's also capable of unspeakable acts, some of which i don't want to say online for fear of being ~*canceled*~ and so i will keep my dabi hcs where he is a horrible person to myself.

my version of shigaraki that i hold in my little brain is nasty and hates women so i like to sometimes ignore that and make him a little less gross and think that his worst trait (besides like murder and stuff) is... having a piss kink. sigh.

I am tired. I am so tired. I don't want to be making this post at 6 a.m. on the Saturday following the release of the new Sonic movie. (I would have made this post earlier in the night, but the ask box is still off because I'm supposed to be on hiatus while I finish my game, so I'm only hearing about this now.)

But, unfortunately, the ride never ends

The short version: Based on descriptions of certain scenes from fans, Penders believes that some of the echidna backstory stuff for Knuckles in the new movie is inspired by his work, like Sonic Chronicles before it. Because he was not involved and he is the legal owner of all of his Archie Sonic material, he is looking into pursuing legal action. (A lawsuit is not happening at the moment. We are at the "he's tweeting about wanting his lawyers to talk to Paramount's lawyers" stage. Well have to wait and see what happens after that.)

(This post will contain spoilers for some exposition dump lore stuff in Sonic 2. It does not spoil the ending or anything like that.)

Instead of paraphrasing him, here are his own words:

Based purely on his word here, the claim that Enerjak is in it because an echidna powers up with the Master Emerald sounds like a massive reach compared to the obvious inspiration the Nocturnus Clan took from the whole Dark Legion saga. Like, Sonic Team created the Master Emerald, and it's a power-granting macguffin belonging to the echidnas. That's just what it is, and it has been since before Penders wrote the whole Enerjak storyline. (And hell, I can't believe I'm saying this, but Ken should give himself more credit if he thinks "echidna who powered up with the Emerald" is all Dimitri/Enerjak is. That's one of his more fondly remembered characters!) Knuckles' dad in the film, on the other hand... well, again, I haven't seen it, but at least one person I know who's seen it genuinely thought it was Locke, so uh... he might have more of an argument there. Or it might literally just be "Knuckles has a dad." I don't know yet. Many people in his Twitter mentions are saying they're completely different, but people have been saying that about the Nocturnus Clan for years and that's complete bullshit, so I'm withholding judgment. I'll comment on this further in a few days after I've seen the movie

However, like me, Ken has also not seen the movie yet. He may or may not have a case here, but I think that him tweeting out all of this before he's even seen it with his own eyes is extremely foolish. Yes, fans are making comparisons, but there's also a segment of the fandom that's constantly tattling to him and snitching tagging him on Twitter over every little thing because they want him to start shit. And boy, this really doesn't do anything to dispel the "Penders thinks he owns the concept of echidnas or fictional characters having parents" jokes that I've been trying to clear up for years. Look. Most Sonic fans don't like Penders. This goes without saying. But in all fairness, I will say that if they did base anything off of the material that Penders owns (and, again, can't confirm or deny that myself right now), then he should be compensated for that. Whatever your opinion of the old Archie legal battle, he owns that stuff, period. And no matter how much you like these movies, Paramount is not your friend. They're a huge media conglomerate, and this movie is gonna make hundreds of millions of dollars. They can afford to throw a comic guy a bone if they used his material. Comic creatives deserve to be compensated fairly for their work, even ones we don't like. Yeah, this whole situation is absurd, but I don't want folks to lose sight of that

Hopefully, if he does have a case, that's all that happens. He gets cut a paycheck and it ends there. If he doesn't have a case, he's up against fucking Paramount trying to defend their latest tentpole blockbuster film franchise. Whatever happens, I sincerely doubt that this will put future films in any sort of danger, so please don't let that fear color your response to this news. He does not want to cancel the movies. He wants royalties. And again, there is no lawsuit happening right now. Please do not go spreading around rumors about there being another lawsuit. We're currently at the phase where he tweets about wanting to talk to his lawyers, and tweets are not legal action

But boy. It just never ends, huh? Jesus fucking Christ. Whatever the end result, I bet Paramount's gonna be going over the story ideas for the Knuckles show with a fine-toothed comb. Like Sisyphus, my torments never end, so expect more posts about this as this situation develops (if it goes anywhere)

(In the meantime: please don't bother arguing with Penders on Twitter about this. I know it's fun to try to ratio him, but no argument, no matter how airtight, is going to convince him of anything in the court of Twitter. Even if he is often full of shit, he is right when he says that he's successfully argued the case for his copyrights in court, and you are a random Sonic fan presumably less than half his age. It's not worth it. Go enjoy your weekend.)

Happy 6th Birthday, Fatal_Error!

Fortunately for him, I've had my hands full with other blog-related projects and tasks, so he gets to enjoy a quiet birthday this year. I hope everyone has been doing well! It's still been pretty quiet on the blog, which isn't awesome, but I've been working on some updates that should hopefully be ready to go out soon, which is awesome! As always I really appreciate everyone's patience with me and I'm just so jazzed to show ya'll what's coming up next. So for Fatal's 6th birthday, I thought it might be interesting to some to share 6 things that have been going on behind the scenes: 1) I FINALLY got a new job! In past posts I've mentioned having to take breaks/step away from the blog quite often in pursuit of job hunting and just general adulting. For those who aren't aware (or maybe are new here - if so, howdy!) I'm not a fulltime comic artist, and I don't rely on this blog or comic as any kind of primary source of income. So I've had to put a lot of energy and time into working on portfolio pieces that aren't just Fatal_Error (although he's in my portfolio, gotta represent!), putting in job applications, going to interviews (if lucky enough to get one), all of which takes a pretty tremendous mental strain and a lot of focus. And I've been at it for...like more than 2 years, lol. But I've finally gotten a new job, I start Monday, and I'm stoked! I'm going to have a lot more freetime to dedicate back into the comic and I couldn't be happier, because things in my opinion are about to get good. 2) The second volume of the graphic novel is almost ready for preorder! At this point I'm wrapping up the bonus comic (that those who get the second volume will see first, and will be posted online for free soon after), finishing up resizing some stuff, and just finalising the bonus preorder item and some items I want to release at the same time (like how I did with the stickers and poster last time). I'm aiming to open preorders in like, mid April. 3) In needing to plan ahead for future volumes, I have definitively figured out that there will be NINE chapters of the story in total, meaning that as soon as Chapter Five is done it's all downhill from there! We're almost at the finish line for the story!! 4) For those interested, I've been working on some Etsy shop updates with FE related items, because I haven't really added anything new in a while. Ideally it'd be nice to have them ready around the time that volume two is available but we'll see! 5) The Bluescreen Event is almost here! I've mentioned this before but Bluescreen is a side comic that I've always wanted to release as quick daily or every-other-day updates for as long as the side comic goes on for. This unfortunately requires me to have all the updates ready to go, otherwise I risk running out of updates before I can catch up. But I'm excited that it's almost ready! It's one of my favorite side comics and I think ya'll will enjoy it too. More on that later! 6) This summer (Summer 2022) I want to finally wrap up what had been started for Fatal's 5th birthday.
